PETER MCDONAGH IS PREPARED FOR A “WAR” WHEN HE FIGHTS FOR THE IRISH TITLE AT RIVERMEAD, READING, ON MARCH 15

London (11 March) Peter McDonagh is prepared to have a “war” when he meets John Hutchinson at Rivermead, Reading, on March 15.

McDonagh, who is dedicating the fight to his late sister, insists there is “no losing this fight” as he contends for the Irish light middleweight title on the undercard to the first set of MaxiNutrition Knockout quarter-finals, live on Channel 5.

“I’m dedicating my fight to my sister, who passed away in January to breast cancer,” Peter said.

“It’s her birthday on Monday so it would be a great birthday present to win the Irish title on Saturday night – there’s no losing, I have to win this fight.”

The 36-year-old former BBBofC Southern Area lightweight and Irish lightweight champion who is making his ring entrance alongside Darren Gough and Soccer AM’s own Tubes, believes with the backing of Hennessy Sports he can push on with his career.

“People are taking me a lot more seriously now, “ Peter said.

“I’ve been training out in Marbella and the MGM and that’s where my camps will be from now on.

“With Hennessy Sports and the MGM I feel as though I can win big titles.”

Born in Galway, Ireland, McDonagh of Bermondsey, London, takes on the undefeated 27-year-old ‘Buncrana Banger’ Hutchinson.

But Peter insists he is not overlooking his latest opponent and sees him as the first step towards bigger opportunities.

“I’m Irish, I’m pure Irish and I just want to be the Irish champion again,” Peter said.

“Once I’ve won that I’m there then, I’ll have a title and I can start targeting something else.

“I’m not looking beyond John Hutchinson on Saturday, he’s an unbeaten fighter, he’s fought in America, he’s a big tough kid and very strong.

“He’s not the most technical fighter, so I’m going to show him how to box and if it becomes a war in the later rounds I’m prepared to have a war.

“I think when it gets to the later rounds that’s when you’ll see me at my best.”

McDonagh competes on the undercard to English light heavyweight champion, Bob Ajisafe and former British, Commonwealth and European champion, Dean Francis, as they clash for the British light heavyweight title and a place in the next round of the MaxiNutrition Knockout.

Also scheduled to fight on the show is Leon Senior, as he faces former Commonwealth title challenger Tony Hill over 10 rounds, in the second quarter final of the MaxiNutrition Knockout for the Southern Area light heavyweight belt.

Former British light welterweight champion and European title challenger Lenny Daws will also be in action, along with Reading’s own Tamuka Mucha, Ricky O’Brien and Slough’s John Brennan.

July to face unbeaten Graves April 12!

Baltimore, MD (March 10, 2014) – Cruiserweight up and comer Venroy “Hardwork” July will step up in competition when he faces unbeaten Quantis Graves Saturday, April 12 over eight rounds at the Patapsco Arena in Baltimore.

The card is promoted by Hardwork Promotions and tickets are available by going to Hardworkpromotions.com or calling 410-635-4754.

Born in St. Catherine, Jamaica, July has an outstanding professional record of 16-1-2 with 6 wins by knockout. Since his lone setback last February, July’s scored three straight victories, most recently outpointing Sevdail Sherifi in Atlantic City, NJ. Outside of the ring, the 31-year-old Suitland, MD resident is also extremely accomplished.

After getting his undergraduate from the University of North Carolina in 2004, July went onto earn a degree from Duke’s internationally ranked Law School. While many fighters moving up the rankings box full-time, July not only promotes himself under the Hardwork Promotions banner, he works 50-plus hours perk week as a corporate lawyer for Hogan Lovells.

Graves, who grew up in the fighting city New Orleans, LA and resides in Beaumont, TX, is 9-0-1 with 4 KO’s. The fellow 31-year-old is a three-time Golden Gloves champion and was an alternate on the 2008 US Olympic Team. Last September, Graves scored his best win to date, topping dangerous and hard hitting Joshua Harris.

“The whole point of this game is to challenge yourself,” July said of his willingness to face an unbeaten opponent. “I didn’t have a huge amateur background so I have to fight my way to the top. I’ve been fighting in every sense of the sport, fighting to get fights and fighting in the ring. That’s the whole reason I started my own promotional company, I just couldn’t get the chances I needed. This just gives me an opportunity to keep fighting.”

In addition to the July-Graves main event, fans will also see 2013 “Beltway Rookie of the Year” runner-up Demond “Dbestatit” Nicholson, heavyweight Dwayne “Big Ticket” McRae, unbeaten middleweight knockout artist Jeremy Trussell, cruiserweight Travis Reeves and Romanian import Alexandru Marin in separate bouts.

This is a special event for the sport and we’re proud to be the television partner for this landmark showdown at Madison Square Garden.”

Cotto (38-4, 31 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, has sold more fight tickets at Madison Square Garden than any other fighter in this millennium. He held a world title every year from 2004 to 2012 while winning 17 of the 21 world championship bouts he has fought. Puerto Rico’s most exciting fighter and one of its greatest, Cotto held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) junior welterweight crown from 2004-2006, successfully defending it six times before vacating it to capture the World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight title at the end of 2006, a title he held for nearly as long. After losing the WBA title to three-time world champion Antonio Margarito, arguably the fight of the year, in July 2008, Cotto won his second welterweight belt in February 2009, knocking out Michael Jennings in the fifth round to become the WBO welterweight champion. He lost the title in his second defense, November 2009, to Manny Pacquiao. Cotto captured the WBA super welterweight title June 5, 2010, in the first fight ever held at the new Yankee Stadium, by stopping undefeated defending champion Yuri Foreman. He successfully defended that title twice in 2011, knocking out former world champion Ricardo Mayorga and Margarito in the 12th and 10th rounds, respectively. He lost his world championship belt on May 5, 2012, via an exciting and close decision, to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a title unification bout in what many consider one of the toughest fights of Mayweather’s career. After unsuccessfully challenging WBA super welterweight champion Austin Trout on December 1, 2012, Cotto returned to the winner’s circle in his last fight. With Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach in his corner, a clearly rejuvenated Cotto knocked out two-time world title challenger Delvin Rodriguez in the third round on October 5, 2013. Notable triumphs on Cotto’s ledger include world champions, ”Sugar” Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, Joshua Clottey, Paulie Malignaggi and Demarcus Corley.

Martínez (51-2-2, 28 KOs), the middleweight champion with the matinee idol looks, hails from Quilmes, Buenos Aires, Argentina. A consensus Top-Five pound-for-pound fighter, Martínez first made his presence known to the boxing world in 2007 by knocking out Saul Roman in the fourth round of their WBC super welterweight title elimination bout. One year later, Martínez captured the WBC interim super welterweight title with an eighth-round stoppage of Alex Bunema. He was elevated to WBC world super welterweight champion in the latter half of 2009. Martínez captured his second world title in as many divisions in 2010, moving up in weight to challenge and upset defending middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik. Martínez enters this fight riding a four-year, seven-bout winning streak, including knockout victories of Paul Williams, Sergiy Dzinziruk, Darren Barker and Matthew Macklin. On Méxican Independence Day 2012 (September 15), Martínez totally dominated undefeated defending WBC middleweight champion Julio César Chávez, Jr. to reclaim the title, winning 11 of the 12 rounds while surviving a brutal knockdown in the final stanza. It was the highest-attended boxing event in the history of the Thomas & Mack Center — 19,186 seats — eclipsing the Lennox Lewis vs. Evander Holyfield heavyweight championship rematch, which previously held the record with 19,151. In his last fight, on April 27, 2013, Martínez successfully defended his title, winning a 12-round decision over previously-undefeated Martin Murray in a Buenos Aires homecoming before 50,000 adoring Argentine fans. It was his first fight on his native soil since 2002.

M-1 Global Light Heavyweight title fight Victor Nemkov vs. Stephan Puetz Headlines ‘M-1 Challenge 46

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (March 10, 2014) – Red-hot Russian light heavyweight champion Victor Nemkov (19-4-0, 3 KO/TKO, 9 SUB) defends his M-1 Global title this Friday against German challenger Stephan Puetz (9-1-0, 4 KO/TKO, 3 SUB), headlining M-1 Challenge 46, at Yubileyny Sports Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Stary Oskol-native Nemkov rides a nine-fight win streak into M-1 Challenge 46, highlighted by his title-winning performance in M-1 Challenge 43, in which his deadly arm-lock forced Vasily Babich to tap-out.

The 26-year-old Puetz is one of the best German light heavyweights in a very competitive European division. He has a perfect record in Germany’s No. 1 promotion, Respect FC.

“The first large event of the year will herald big things to come from M-1 Global in 2014,” M-1 Global president Vadim Finkelchtein said. “We’re all very excited for the 205-pound title fight between Nemkov and Puetz, uncoubtedly two of the best Light Heavyweights in Europe. Don’t sleep on Gluhovvs. Garner, which will be a slugfest of the ages, and Tokov vs. Duraev for the No. 1 contender fight at 185 pounds.”

M-1 Challenge 46 will air live on Russia 2, the terrestrial channel, throughout Russia and the Commonwealth of Individual States (CIS), as well as across the Middle East on Abu Dhabi Sports Channels.

M-1 Global is the No. 1 European MMA organization, as well as one of the oldest in the world, dating back to 1998. Superstar Fedor Emelianenko, considered by many to be the greatest fighter in MMA history, has been the face of M-1 Global around the combat sports world for the past decade.

The M-1 Challenge series has traditionally introduced a new wave of potential MMA stars, showcasing elite athletes from Russia and across Europe. Many fighters who fall into the aforementioned category will be showcased on M-1 Challenge 46.

The M-1 Challenge 46 event undercard is loaded from top-to-bottom, featuring seven Super Fights. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The most explosive M-1 Challenge 46 fight of the night could very well turn out to be between Latvian knockout artist Konstsantin “Lacplesis” Gluhov (26-14-0, 20 KO/TKO, 3 SUB) and dangerous American heavyweight Kenny “Deuce” Garner (12-5-0, 8 KO/TKO/2 SUB). A World champion in Muay Thai and kickboxing, Gluhov is a tremendous striker who defeated Garner by split decision in M-1 Challenge 38. A knockout puncher and great showman, Garner is an underrated wrestler and grappler who has put eight of his 12 victims to sleep.

Konstsantin Gluhov Kenny Garner

Russian middleweight Anatoly Tokov (11-0-0, 7 KO/TKO, 2 SUB) battles fellow countryman Albert Duraev (4-2-0, 1 KO/TKO, 2 SUB) in their No. 1 contender fight. A notoriously slow starter who is nearly unstoppable in the last round, Takov trains in Stary Oskol with Fedor’s legenday coaches, Mikhail Voronov and Alexander Mitchkov. Duraev’s lone loss in M-1 Global competition came against its current middleweight champion, Ramazan Emeev.

Undefeated Ukrainian featherweight prospect Pavel Vitruk (10-0-0, 2 KO/TKO/1 SUB) puts his unbeaten record on the line against upset-minded Brazilian invader Yuri “Killa” Maia (12-2, 8 KO/TKO). One of the smallest featherweights in M-1Global, Vitrun has a kickboxing background and he prefers to stay on his feet. The 20-year-old Maia, who will be going for his ninth knockout win, represents the stiffest test of Virtuk’s young career.

Spanish welterweight Daniel “The Gladiator” Tabera (17-5-0, 4 KO/TKO, 6 SUB) takes on Russian grappler Magomed Mustafaev (8-1-0, 5 KO/TKO, 3 SUB) in an intriguing match. Making his welterweight debut after fighting in all weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight, Tabera is a tough fighter with invaluable experience. Mustafaev is a highly-touted prospect who has won his last seven fights in a row.

Spanish featherweight Agoney Romero (3-1-1, 1 KO/TKO) faces Russian nemesis Nikita Chistayakov (0-1-0). Undefeated in two fights held in Russian, Romero has vastly improved his striking technique. Chistyakov, who trains with Vitruk, is a clear underdog in this match-up.

French featherweight Jerome Bouisson (12-4-0, 2 KO/TKO/7 SUB) meets Azerbaijani Tural Ragimov (7-1-0, 3 KO/TKO, 3 SUB). The well-rounded French fighters is a strong grappler, while Ragimov will be making his M-1 Global debut.

Russian lightweight Zulfikar Usmanov (5-2-0, 4 SUBS) throws-down with Belarussian veteran Artiom Damkovsky (15-9-0, 6 KO/TKO, 1 SUB). Usmanov faces a must-win situation in order to remain fighting at the elite level. Striking sensation Damkovsky is a highly entertaining fighter, as well as a former M-1 Global Selection and Challenge champion.

DANNY “SWIFT” GARCIA AND MAURICIO “EL MAESTRO” HERRERA MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Danny and Angel Garcia
Kelly Swanson
Thanks, everybody for joining us today for the Danny Garcia and Mauricio Herrera international media conference call. We are going to start first with Mauricio, as well as his trainer, Willie Silva, and then Danny Garcia will be joining us. I would now like to introduce Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Boy Promotions who will talk about the fight and make the formal introductions.

Richard Schaefer
Thank you and welcome, everybody to today’s conference call. For Danny Garcia, this fight means coming home, coming home to Puerto Rico. It is the first time he’s going to be fighting there, and for Mauricio Herrera it’s not coming home, but it is taking home. He wants to take home all of those belts back home to Riverside, California, so for both of those guys in a way coming home and taking home is sort of like the slogan of the show here. With Danny Garcia we have what I believe is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and with Mauricio Herrera we have somebody who has been waiting for this opportunity, who is extremely skilled, knows how to be a spoiler as well, he’s the last man to beat Provodnikov as well, so, I think we have certainly the ingredients for a terrific matchup, and Danny fired on by his crowd there in Puerto Rico and Mauricio wanting to get this belt.

The opening bout on the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast will bring to you one of the most talked about and most exciting heavyweights, Deontay Wilder against Malik Scott, as the 12-round WBC Final Heavyweight Eliminator. The winner of that fight will be immediately fighting the winner of Arreola and Stiverne, so there’s going to be much at stake there as well. Deontay is extremely fan friendly outside of the ring, and of course inside of the ring even more so. He’s a tremendous personality, a tremendous puncher, and a lot of people feel that he is America’s best hope to bring the heavyweight championship back to the United States.

I do want to mention as well that SHOWTIME EXTREME is going live as well with a couple of fights. The main event on the SHOWTIME EXTREME telecast is another mouth-watering showdown with Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez vs. Daniel Ponce De Leon, which obviously is a rematch, a 10-round WBO International Junior Lightweight Championship.

The card takes place a week from Saturday, March 15, at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Puerto Rico, and is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, with promotions in association with PR Best Boxing. I want to thank Peter Rivera, the President of PR Best Boxing, for all his efforts and all his hard work to make this card a reality from Puerto Rico. I want to thank our sponsors, Corona, AT&T and Casamigos Tequila, and want to mention as well that the Wilder/Scott fight is presented in association with Goossen Tutor Promotions.

SHOWTIME starts at 7 p.m. Eastern/Pacific, and SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will go live at 9 p.m. Eastern/6 p.m. Pacific, and it’s going to be in Spanish as well. Tickets are selling extremely fast. When I talked to Peter he believes it will be a sellout in Bayamon, so please make sure that you let the people know that a limited number of tickets is still available starting at $25, $50, $75, $150, $200 and $400, so make sure if you are in Puerto Rico that you are obviously going to watch this live.

First up I’d like to introduce to you Mauricio Herrera’s trainer, Willie Silva, who will give us some insights on how they have prepared and what the strategy will be, and how the whole camp went, and so on. So if I could please turn it over to Willie Silva.

Willie Silva
I’m happy to be here because I think we’re going to take the fight. We’re going to beat this guy and we’re going to bring this championship to California.

R. Schaefer
Mauricio, they call him “El Maestro” Herrera, with an excellent record of 20 wins and 3 losses, of Riverside, California, is known as a very fierce junior welterweight contender, has been a professional boxer since 2007, and made waves in the welterweight division. And when you are a fighter you obviously always look for these opportunities to go against the best, and there’s no question about it with Danny Garcia, he is the best junior welterweight.

But Mauricio knows a little bit about going in against the best in the division, one of them obviously Junior Welterweight World Champion, Ruslan Provodnikov, I mentioned it before, he’s the last man to beat him. And he is ready to go March 15, he is ready to go into the lion’s den there in Puerto Rico and to take his long awaited job as the World Championship. It’s a pleasure now for me to introduce to you, Mauricio Herrera.

Mauricio Herrera
I want to say thank you to Golden Boy Promotions for the last year for giving me this opportunity to try for a world title. I just want to say that I’m ready and, like I said, I’m never in a boring fight and I know we didn’t take this fight just because it was a world title opportunity, we also took it because we think we can win this fight and it’s going to be a great fight. Like you said, I’m a spoiler, so you’d better look out for that.

Q
My first question is for you, Richard, and then I’m going to go to Mauricio. How much of a danger is there of a let down, given that this is the first time in a while where Danny has been the favorite against a guy that some people don’t think has a real shot?

R. Schaefer
Well, I think it’s going to be a question you’re really going to need to ask Danny. But I do know that suddenly it’s like reverse roles, Danny has always been like the underdog, and never really gotten I think the credit he deserves. But I think with his last performance against Lucas Matthysse he changed a lot of people’s minds and opened a lot of people’s eyes, so I think he’s going to be in a different position. And that certainly is something from a training point of view, I talked to other fighters before, when you do fight somebody where you are the favorite, you know, do you really maybe skip a step here and skip a step there and say, well, you know, that shouldn’t be too difficult after everybody else I fought, and so on. From a mental point of view, I definitely think that that could be the case, but you need to ask Danny that question.

I think going to Puerto Rico might look like an advantage, his homecoming and first time fighting there in the place where his parents were born and his grandparents are living, you know. But that might be not necessarily a positive either because what this does, it puts tremendous additional pressure on Danny to perform because he obviously wants to get the approval of the Puerto Rican people and he wants to perform and entertain in front of the Puerto Rican people. And as I said before, that’s where you enter Mauricio Herrera, who is a known spoiler and who knows how to take advantage of these, maybe, cutting a step here or there in training, or the added pressure in Puerto Rico. Mauricio is going to come with everything to gain and nothing to lose, and these are the opponents that are the most dangerous.

Q
Picking up on something you said about him going to Puerto Rico for the first time, they currently don’t have any champions born there, and obviously he’s a champion, he must feel a certain amount of pressure –

R. Schaefer
Yes, it’s going to be a lot of pressure on Danny during Fight Week, being there in Puerto Rico, absolutely. So, I think, yes, it’s great for Danny to be fighting in Puerto Rico, but since this is the first time, there definitely will be more demands on him, from a public relations stand point, from media, from fans, and from whatsoever, so all that are points which Mauricio Herrera, I’m sure knows and is ready to exploit.

Q
Mauricio, it occurred to me that you might know how to make guys uncomfortable in the ring. Do you see this as that same opportunity, as a similar opportunity to call yourself a spoiler?

M. Herrera
Oh yes, most definitely, I think my style does that to the guys, especially the stronger guys, my style tends to come out and blossom even more. And I feel that this fight, I know when Danny fights he is fighting tough and no-namers, but I don’t think it takes a really tough guy and a big name to beat Danny. It could just be a random guy like me who has some skills, some smartness in their arsenal and again an awkward style that can defeat Danny. And that’s what I’m going in really confident for.

Q
What is your style, how do you neutralize what other guys do well? Because he’s been in there with Erik Morales, he’s been in there with Zab Judah, he’s been in there with Amir Khan, athletic types, and of course Kendall Holt who once dropped Tim Bradley, what can you bring to the table that none of those guys did in terms of your style?

M. Herrera
I think the biggest difference between me and those guys is a lot of those guys had a lot of amateur backgrounds. You know, I don’t have a big amateur background, so I’m not following with the basic punches and rhythms as those guys have and that Danny can see and is used to, you know, I’m a little off rhythm on my shots. And also I drill with power at times, and sometimes I have no power, sometimes I go with speed and I can go inside, I can control distance, and I’m hard to hit, if you’ve seen my fights, so I think all of that will make a big difference from those fights and from me.

Q
Do you feel like that in the Provodnikov fight some people thought that maybe he deserved to win, but in the Alvarado fight that you kind of maybe got ripped off a little bit? How do you see the result of those two fights, since they’re the two biggest names that you faced, both of them, who went on to win world titles?

M. Herrera
Yes, I felt that with the Provodnikov fight, it was a close fight but I felt I had landed more punches, so I felt comfortable that I was going to take it. Even Provodnikov himself said he felt that I won, that I was a better man that night and outsmarted him. With Alvarado it was a different fight, I fought a different style with him. We went in there trying to push him back, he’s a bigger, tougher guy and with him, which I got to show a lot too, and I thought that fight was pretty close too. I mean, if you see that fight, Alvarado missed a lot of shots, so either way I felt like, you know what, going into his turf, his promotion, that the judges were going to be on his side. Only one judge gave me one round, so when I saw that I figured I had no chance even if I won three or four rounds more. You can see the way they were judging I was not going to make that decision. But I thought it was a very close fight. I mean, I did take punishment on my face, but those were like three, four big shots that he took on me, but I thought it was a very close fight. Yes, so I thought with Alvarado it was close, and with Provodnikov it could have gone either way as well.

Q
Do you feel like you’re being overlooked a little bit in this fight with the type of opposition that you have faced?

M. Herrera
Yes, I’m feeling like I’m being overlooked. And maybe part of that is because I’m not really known, nobody really knows me. I mean, the same way with Provodnikov when he went up against Bradley, I mean, I’ve seen comments and hear people say, who’s this guy? Who’s this ESPN guy? He isn’t going to do anything. What is Bradley fighting this guy for? And as you see what happened, you know, it was a different story. But I feel the same way, I mean, when people don’t know who you are and they see you have some losses, they don’t know your whole story and your whole background, and they see a knockout percentage and they go by that too. But all that doesn’t matter, you know, with boxing anything can happen. And they’re going to see that I’m at that level, and that I will rise to the occasion.

Q
Mauricio, you said that your style was a little complicated, you have a different kind of style, what kind of style does Danny have and how will you fight him, how would you describe Danny?

M. Herrera
Well, you know Danny’s a very good fighter. I’m going to have to watch out for everything. He’s got a good right hand, he’s got a good left hand. I’m going to have to be careful. I’m going to have to pick my spots, know when to fight him inside, and know when to box, so I have to be careful with everything. It’s going to be a tough fight.

Q
Richard mentioned that Danny has added pressure, he’s fighting in Puerto Rico, there might be distractions, do you think that’s an advantage for you? Does that make you comfortable to know that you’re at ease, that you don’t have that?

M. Herrera
You know, I’m not really at ease. I can’t say I’m at ease because it is going to be a tough fight. But, yes, he’s going to have some added pressure. He’s going to want to win for his people. He’s going to be fighting in Puerto Rico, he’s going to want to win for them, and obviously, you know, I’m going to use that to my advantage. But, yes, but it’s not going to be an easy fight. I’m not at ease. There is going to be some pressure on my part as well.

Q
Mauricio, you came close to fighting a world title fight before against Brandon Rios, how did you feel when that fight disintegrated?

M. Herrera
Well, I was kind of disappointed. I thought maybe that was my time to shine. Brandon Rios was a perfect opponent. And, yes, for a reason I guess that didn’t happen, which didn’t matter, I mean, because now I’m fighting for another big fight and I guess this is now my time.

Q
And you explained a little bit about Danny Garcia, but how do you beat a Danny Garcia, in your opinion, with your style?

M. Herrera
Well, as you should know, I throw a lot of punches. I use the jab very well. A lot of fighters don’t use the jab. I don’t think Danny is used to seeing that. You know, I can come out different ways. I can come out to pressure him. I can come out to box. I’ve shown that I can do a little bit of both. And I have really great defense. I think the defense is the main key. You know, I’m not that easy to hit and I have a very good chin. So, I know I can out punch a guy and it’s not going to be an easy fight, but when it gets down and when we have to go and exchange, you know, I can do that too. So, I’m really ready on all angles.

Q
You started as a professional very late. You were already in your late twenties when you finally started. What kept you from turning professional?

M. Herrera
Well, I started when I was 13, but my first trainer, Rudy, just kept training me along and just helping the next fighters that were coming in, I was getting older. And you know it was funny because he said that I was always too young to go pro, and I was in my twenties, and by the time I told him I wanted to go pro I was like 25, 26, then he told me I was too old. So, it wasn’t going to happen, so I left, I had to leave him. I was very dedicated with him, but I had to part ways at that time and train on my own for a while, and then that’s how I got connected with Willy, so connection to some pro fights, and at 27 I turned pro. And I don’t think it’s bad after five years that I got a chance to fight for a world title, and I thank the Garcia’s again for giving me the opportunity.

W. Silva
I have a comment. Danny Garcia never faced a guy like Mauricio Herrera and it’s going to be a nightmare that night.

R. Schaefer
Before I’m going to turn it over to Danny, I want to make some opening comments. Obviously, Danny Garcia, what he has achieved in the last few years I think there is no fighter in no weight class who has done that outside of Danny Garcia and Floyd Mayweather, and that is taking on the best. And when you look at what he has accomplished, we know all the names, I mean, it really is like the Who’s Who of the Junior Welterweight Division, some of the biggest names in the sport, period, he has taken on, and in most of those fights he went in as the underdog, people were not giving him much respect, but I think all that’s changed. In his last performance against Lucas Matthysse I think he made everybody believers.

What is particularly impressive and why I think as well that he is obviously the Unified Super Lightweight World Champion currently, clearly the number one rated Super Lightweight boxer in the world, but in my books after Floyd and Andre Ward I believe because of what Danny has achieved cumulative, fight after fight and how he has shown how he has been dealing with speed, the fastest guy in the sport may be Amir Khan, how he neutralized that speed, he was confused, he evaded the first few rounds, but then adjusted, adapted and dominated the fight. How he took away the power of the biggest puncher maybe in the sport, Lucas Matthysse, and how he took away the experience for maybe two of the most experienced fighters to date, next to Bernard Hopkins, Zab Judah and Erik Morales, so this guy knows how to deal with speed at the highest level, with power at the highest level, and with experience at the highest level.

I mean, you look at that and you do that fight after fight after fight, I really believe the pound for pound list is reserved for exactly people like that, not because they had one great fight or had an amateur career and things like that. No, you earned that spot. And I think if one guy has earned it it’s Danny Garcia, and I believe that Danny Garcia today, in my list, is number three pound for pound as well. I don’t have to tell you all the achievements he’s done. He is exciting. He is a terrific fighter, we know that. He’s a tremendous person, human being outside of the ring as well, always fun to be around with, and it really is an honor for me to be able to work for Danny Garcia and for his team.

And it is a pleasure now for me to turn it over and introduce to you the undisputed Super Lightweight World Champion, Danny “Swift” Garcia.

Danny Garcia
Thank you, Richard. I love being a part of the Golden Boy family, and thanks to all the media for tuning in, and thanks for everybody in Golden Boy. I’m ready for March 15.

Q
Can you talk about when it first became something in your mind, that you said to yourself, ‘I would really love to go and fight in Puerto Rico,’ even though you weren’t born there, but you certainly have a lot of roots there with your family.

D. Garcia
Yes, it’s always been a dream of mine to fight in Puerto Rico, just to reach out to my fans in Puerto Rico, because I am Puerto Rican and they don’t have a champion right now, so I think this gave me the perfect time for me to go over there and show the Puerto Rican fans that they have a true champion. And I’m excited about it. It’s always been a dream of mine to fight in Puerto Rico, and it happened, and I thank Golden Boy for that, for making it happen.

Q
Have you visited Puerto Rico in the past?

D. Garcia
Yes, I visited Puerto Rico before. I was there a few times. I was there like a year and a half ago, and I think I was there as a kid.

Q
Are your parents both born there? I think Angel was, but I’m not sure if they were both born there.

D. Garcia
Yes, my mom and dad are born in Puerto Rico.

Q
So, do you still have family members that live there?

D. Garcia
Yes, my whole dad’s side of the family lives in Puerto Rico, and my mom’s side of the family, they moved to the States when they were young.
Q
I don’t know, do you get the feeling from those that you’ve spoken to that are there, either family members or friends of your family, that people are excited to have the fight and that they’re going to adopt you as their champion, basically, because of your Puerto Rican heritage?

D. Garcia
Yes, they love me, and they can’t wait. They call me and tell me every day that people in Puerto Rico they love me and they’re excited for the fight and they’re going to the fight, so there’s no doubt in my mind that the people in Puerto Rico are going to be there for me that night.

Q
Can you talk about what went into the fact that you aren’t Floyd’s next opponent? I don’t know if it was that he didn’t want to fight you. I’ve been told that your camp decided that you would love to fight Floyd at some point but not right now and maybe in the future. Can you address that a little bit?

D. Garcia
You know, I let Al Haymon do what he does and I’ll let Richard do what they do. We weren’t really pressing for the fight, we just let Golden Boy do their job and I let Al do his job. I never question what Al does, I never question what my team does, so whoever they tell me to fight, I’ll fight and I’ll train and I’ll get ready for it.

Q
Would you have wanted Mayweather?

D. Garcia
I’m a boxer, at the end of the day I like to fight the best, so you know that’s what my manager wanted, and that’s what my team wanted, and that’s what I want.

Q
So you’re okay that you go from the potential of fighting Floyd for all that money and all that glory, to fighting a good fighter like Herrera, but certainly nobody’s going to mistake Mauricio Herrera with Floyd, are you okay with that?

D. Garcia
Destiny is destiny. I’m okay with whatever happens. Like I said before, I don’t question my manager’s job, I never did, and I think that’s why we’re in the position today where people think I should be fighting him and people think I deserve to fight because my manager and my promoter did a great job so far. So, I think they’re doing a great job and I’m doing my job, and hopefully the fight might happen one day.

Q
Was any part of that in your mind about the fact that, you know, you’re still a young fighter, you’re only 25-years-old, that you really weren’t in any particular hurry to go to 147 pounds? Are you comfortable with 140 and you figured you wanted to stay there for a little while longer? Was weight an issue in your mind?

D. Garcia
Yes, like you said, I’m still young, I’m 25-years-old, and I’m growing, I’m building my own legacy, and 140, it’s a little hard to make, it’s a sacrifice, but I’m pretty sure once I go up to 147 it’s going to be hard too. So I don’t think the weight was an issue, but I feel like you know I grew into the 140 pound weight class and I feel really strong, I feel real good making the weight, and I feel so good in the gym, so I didn’t feel like it was possible for me to move up yet.

R. Schaefer
I just want to quickly add to that. The experience of fighting in Puerto Rico was actually something Danny had personally spoken to me for the past couple of years or so, during fights he comes to me and he’s telling me, ‘I’ve got to fight in Puerto Rico. You’ve got to do a fight in Puerto Rico.’ And so when you look at the guys he fought in the last couple of years, it wasn’t just really natural to take a fight like that to Puerto Rico, but we felt this was the perfect opportunity to fulfill one of Danny’s dreams, which was to fight in Puerto Rico. And, I hope it’s the first of many.

I think as it relates to Floyd, I’m getting more and more questions, hey, is Danny going to fight Floyd, and so there’s more and more excitement building up about that fight, so assuming Floyd handles the challenges ahead of him, do I believe that maybe sometime next year, maybe a year from now, Cinco de Mayo 2015 we might see, assuming Floyd keeps on winning, are going to see a Floyd, Danny Garcia fight? Absolutely. And I can just imagine how much of an anticipated showdown that will be. And, Danny, you just heard that, how mature he is in answering your questions. And, yes, he’s young and he’s going to be ready, and if the opportunity would be today he’ll fight him today, but, you know everything at its time.

Q
I just wanted to clarify, do you know when the first time you went to Puerto Rico was?

D. Garcia
About two years ago.

Q
Your mom said that you always dreamed of being a world champion, what allowed you to have such large dreams?

D. Garcia
You know, being the world champion was everything to me. My dream was always, first, to go to the Olympics and get gold, and then turn pro, but that didn’t happen. And so I just stayed focused, I trained hard, and I became World Champion and I’m proud.

Q
When did you start training and stuff like that? As soon as you walked into the gym, or did it take a few years?

D. Garcia
No, when I walked into the gym when I was a kid everybody used to say, ‘Olympics, Olympics,’ so I really didn’t know what it was until I did my research and I was like, wow, the Olympics sound big, so I made that my goal, because everybody else kind of wanted to go to the Olympics and stuff like that, so I wanted to win gold and become world champion. But I’m happy that I’m world champion, and I’m here.

Q
Danny, I’d like your take on what Richard said about you being number three pound for pound behind Floyd and Ward.

D. Garcia
I fought the best, I never turned down a fight, I beat the best, and I think the pound for pound list is about fighting the best and beating the best. And like he said, there are a few good fighters out there who did it, and I’m one of them.

Q
I’d like also your scouting report, your assessment technically, especially of Mauricio Herrera, a lot of people who will be tuning in haven’t seen him, he’s on ESPN a lot, but I’d like your assessment of Herrera, please.

D. Garcia
Oh yes, he’s a good, tough fighter. I know he wants to be world champion and I know he’s going to come to fight, but I fought many amateur fights, I fought the best pros in the world, and I don’t think there’s anything he can show me differently than I already do. So, I’m going to go in there and do what I do best, and that’s go in there, make adjustments, and get the crowd excited.

Q
Is Angel trying to be a little bit more chill and not stir up the pot? Where’s Angel?

D. Garcia
No, he’s a businessman, so he’s probably out there handling business or getting something done. He’s always on the move. He doesn’t like to be in one spot. You know he’s all over the place, but he’ll be there March 15.

Q
Was there any need for you and your father to have the conversation about hey, Danny, this is a big opportunity, but don’t be let down, you’re the favorite, but we can’t afford a letdown.

D. Garcia
Man, I train hard for every fight. I put 110 percent in the gym. All I know is hard work and dedication, so there’s no thought in my mind saying that I’m going to let anybody down, because I know what I bring to the fight. I know how hard I work in the gym, and no matter who believes in me, or who thinks I’m a winner, or who thinks I’m not going to win in future or past fights, I know what I’m capable of doing. I know how hard I work. And that’s why every time at the end of the fight I come out victorious because I know the pain and the sacrifice that I put my body through to win these fights and excite my fans.

Q
Have you and your father had any conversation about not getting distracted when you get over there because people are going to demand that you go here, you’re going to have to make this appearance, you’re going to be possibly embraced as a Puerto Rican champion?

D. Garcia
No, we’re not going to get distracted. We know what we’ve got to do. We’re going to do the same thing we always do, we’re going to stay focused until Friday night and then we’re going to get the job done. And then after that we can make the trips and go visit whoever we want to visit.

Q
Along the names that you’ve fought, Morales, Holt, Amir Khan, Nate Campbell, Zab Judah, is there anything that Mauricio can show you, he says he’s different from all of them, is there anything that he can show you that you haven’t seen?

D. Garcia
I mean, we’ll just have to see. We’ll just have to see. You know, talk is cheap. You know me, I’ve never been the one to talk and say what he’s going to do or what he can do. I’m just going to go in there and do what I do best, and that’s win the fight. I’m not really worried about what he’s going to do. As long as my head’s on my shoulders and I’m focused, I know I’m going to get the job done.

Q
First of all, where are you in the stages of your training?

D. Garcia
You know I’m still going hard. I’m still training hard. I’m at my peak right now and I feel great, man, and my weight is great. I’m ready to fight tomorrow. So, I’m on cruise control.

Q
What’s the most exciting thing about the fact that you’re about to fight in Puerto Rico for the first time?

D. Garcia
It’s very exciting, because this is where my family’s from, this is where my roots are and it’s something I always asked Richard. And I think this is very special to me because this is one of my dreams that I always dreamed of, and to go over there and fight in front of all the Puerto Rican fans that are going to be there is amazing. I’ve never fought in an arena where every single fan was mine, and it’s going to be very special to me and I’m going to deliver.

Q
When Rocky Martinez lost his title and there was a lot of buzz about Puerto Rico not having a world champion, you tweeted, “Puerto Rico still has one champion.” What motivated you to get that tweet out?

D. Garcia
I don’t think it’s fair that you can say I’m not a Puerto Rican fighter because I wasn’t born in Puerto Rico, when my blood is Puerto Rican. So I had to let the fans know, hey, I’m a Puerto Rican fighter and that’s just the way it is, and March 15 that’s why we got this fight in Puerto Rico, to solidify me as a Puerto Rican champion.

Q
Do you get more excited about fighting in your homeland?

D. Garcia
Yes, I’m very excited about fighting in my homeland. It’s always been a dream of mine, and I can’t wait. I know that the fans in Puerto Rico are very excited, I’m very excited, and it’s going to be a grand show that night.

Q
So, if the fight is successful for you, are you hoping to come back and fight in Puerto Rico again?

D. Garcia
Yes, I would love to. I would love to. You know, first we’ve got to handle March 15, and in the future if there’s an opportunity, I’m always down for it. Let’s do it.

Q
I want Danny to elaborate on this opponent, when it was first brought up, hey, this is the guy that we want to fight, how did you and your team take that, and did it take long for you guys to agree to it?

D. Garcia
As soon as they told me about it, just like any other opponent, we never turned down an opponent. We believe in destiny, so whomever they say is the person, that’s the person that we accept and that’s the person that we fight. It was never, no, we want to fight him, or we want to fight him, because you know we never do that. We just believe in destiny. Whoever it is, it is, and that’s who we fight.

Q
Do you have any surprise guests at your ring entrance like guys like maybe Daddy Yankee, Tito Trinidad, somebody like kind of a signal of welcoming you to the island with open arms. Any people like that?

D. Garcia
We’ve got something in mind. We’ve got something in mind. But I don’t want to say something, I don’t want to spoil it, or if it don’t happen. Wei’re working on something and hopefully everything goes well.

Q
Have you seem the Provodnikov-Herrera fight, and did you see anything in that fight that worries you?

D. Garcia
I have seen the fight, it was a good fight. He did what he had to do. He outboxed the Russian guy, the Russian guy is strong and he got the victory. But, you know, that was a good fight to him, but he’s fighting a whole different kind of animal this fight, and I’m going to show that March 15.

Q
How do you control the emotions and not overlook a fighter like Herrera?

D. Garcia
I’ve just got to stay relaxed. I’ve got to stay focused just like I have been every other fight. I’ve got to listen to my trainer. I’ve got to stay calm. And I’ve got to go in there and get the momentum from the first round and get the crowd into it, and then win the fight.

Q
Did you used to follow some of the Puerto Rican fighters like Miguel Cotto, Tito Trinidad and some of the other fighters that have made Puerto Rico one of the best islands for boxing?

D. Garcia
Oh yes, most definitely. I was a Trinidad fan as a little kid. I’ve seen all his fights. I’ve seen Miguel for his whole career. I’ve seen a lot of the great fighters, so I’ve always been a fan of the Puerto Rican fighters and I’m happy to be one myself.

Q
Now that you mentioned that, how do you feel Juan Manuel Lopez is also fighting on the card?

D. Garcia
It’s a blessing. I think it only right to have another Puerto Rican fighter, another Puerto Rican star on the card. So it’s going to be a great night of boxing, it’s going to be a great night for the Puerto Ricans.

Q
Richard, if Danny’s successful will you bring it back here and do you think that would help you with pay-per-view for a possible Mayweather vs. Garcia fight?

R. Schaefer
Well, I think the Puerto Rican fans are great fans. They’re very passionate about boxing. And so based on what I’ve heard from Peter Rivera ticket sales are very strong, and we do anticipate to sell out at the arena. So, yes, the plan is that this is not just a one-off, and I know that Danny would love to go back to Puerto Rico as well, so you know, I can definitely see additional fights, future fights, taking place in Puerto Rico with Danny if everything goes well.

And yes, as it relates to, I think Puerto Rico wants to embrace a champion and Danny Garcia has an opportunity to become one of the best Puerto Rican champions based on what he has accomplished already. And I am sure if, and when a Floyd Mayweather fight happens that the Puerto Ricans are going to be very, very much into Danny and cheering on their man.

I’m going to have Danny make the closing statement, but I just want to quickly jump again on what I said before, because I think there were some follow up questions made and maybe I did stir the pot a bit here with the declaring Danny Garcia as the number three pound for pound fighter in the world, but I really honestly, from my heart, believe that pound for pound with this list is not about just one fight, like you look at a guy like Rigondeaux, who is a great fighter but he has really one good win. Or you look at like Klitschko, who had many great fights but the quality of his opposition is just not really there.

But Danny is fortunate that he is in a weight class, or weight classes, where the biggest and best names are fighting at and Danny never turns down a fight or a fighter, and he takes everybody on, and when he went into that fight with Matthysse all of you media guys, and I mean all of you, maybe with the exception of one or two, picked Matthysse to win. I think Danny was a 9-1 underdog, something like that, and people even said he was scared and shit like that. You know, and you saw what he did. You saw what he did. Every single time this guy steps up, and it is time now, and I hardly ever get this outspoken as that, and you guys know that, it is time now that Danny Garcia gets the proper respect.

Danny, I look forward to seeing you, and I’m going to turn it over to you now to make your closing comments.

D. Garcia
I’ll see you March 15, Richard. Oh man, I’m very excited to be fighting in Puerto Rico in front of my fans. I had a tremendous camp, I ran hundreds of miles, and I did what I had to do at the gym. I’m just happy to be going there March 15 and giving my fans in Puerto Rico a great fight and showing them why I’m one of the best fighters in the world. I’m very excited and my team is excited, and my fans are excited, and I’m my family’s excited, and I can’t wait to go out on March 15 and give the fans a great fight all around the world. Thank you, guys. I’ll see you March 15 in Puerto Rico.

Felix: “This fight is everything to me”

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 10th, 2014) — Forget everything you think you know about Luis Felix.

After years of treating mixed martial arts like a hobby, the Providence-based lightweight is ready to go “all in” as he prepares for the toughest test of his career Friday night at Twin River Casino.

“No more excuses,” said Felix (10-7, 3 KOs), who’ll face seven-time Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) veteran Drew Fickett in the main event of “CES MMA XXII” on Friday, March 14th, 2014.

“I’ve pretty much put everything aside to focus on fighting and make a run at being elite and making it to the next level. This is all I do now. No more secondary job. I’m pretty much all in at this point.”

Despite a tremendous wrestling background, which helped him become a state champion at nearby Cranston East High School, and his willingness to fight anyone at any given time, the knock on Felix through the years was his conditioning — or lack thereof — and whether or not he took the sport seriously.

“In the past, I wasn’t always all in,” he said. “It was always fun, but I used it as a hobby.”

It showed. Felix spent the first three years of his professional career teetering on the brink, never winning more than two consecutive fights. A loss to Joe DeChaves in 2010, which, to this day, Felix says was “the biggest fluke,” pushed Felix to jump right back into the cage less than a month later against then-unbeaten prospect Joe Proctor. Felix pulled off the upset, knocking out Proctor in the second round.

“I had been fighting every month, so I was in great shape,” Felix said. “By the time I stepped in with Proctor, I had gotten much better as a fighter.”

Proctor eventually made his way to the big stage two years later, starring in Season 15 of The Ultimate Fighter, but the fight paid more immediate dividends for Felix, whose career path changed dramatically after handing Proctor his first career loss. He suddenly realized what he could accomplish when motivated.

“I really started taking it more seriously after that,” he said. “All the hype was behind [Proctor] at the time and where he was going. After that fight, I started talking with [UFC veteran] Jorge Rivera and a few other coaches and really began buckling down. Ever since then, the way I go about this has been completely different.”

The win over Proctor was merely a precursor to what unfolded over the next three years. Since then, Felix has won four of his last five fights, including a win over another UFC vet, Marc Stevens, earning Felix the reputation as a fighter who saves his best for his biggest fights. Felix also upended Boston-based prospect Lucas Cruz in December. Cruz was 6-1 at the time and owned wins over Pete Jeffrey and John Ortolani before losing by split decision to Felix.

“For me, it’s a challenge, like when they’re saying, ‘Oh, this guy is that good,’ or, ‘This guy is better than you,’ or, ‘This guy has done this,'” Felix said. “Having that kind of challenge in front of me is motivation enough for me to get after it.”

Facing Fickett (42-20, 3 KOs) is a similar challenge. At his best, Fickett is one of the most dangerous fighters in the sport, having beaten both Kenny Florian and Josh Koscheck, but his own self-destructive past — alcohol abuse, etc. — has put him in a similar “do or die” mode where every fight could be the end of the road or the beginning of a new journey.

“Knowing someone like him, who has been at that level and fought some of the best in the world, I know where I want to go and where I want to be in this sport,” Felix said. “To fight someone of his caliber is just another challenge.

“I don’t know what it does immediately for me, but I know what’s at stake for me personally and where I want to be. This fight for me is everything. I’m not looking past it. I’m not looking at where it will put me. I’m just focusing on this challenge in front of me.”

Just how serious is Felix these days? Not only is he working with Rhode Island-based boxing coach Vic Fagnant, who he considers “the biggest blessing” in his career the past two years, he’s also been working on his strength and conditioning with former CES MMA lightweight champion Mike Campbell, who pressed Felix to train with him for five years until he finally decided to take his advice in preparation for this upcoming fight.

“That’s been a whole new spectrum for me,” Felix said. “I never really lifted weights or did strength training. Working with Campbell and seeing the things he’s done as an athlete really opened my eyes. I already feel such a big difference in my explosive strength in a short amount of time.

“From the first day I went in there, it was like learning something new. Now I look forward to going in there and training and getting my ass kicked.”

Felix also has a manager, Patsy Sperduto, who has helped keep him on track. Having a trustworthy inner-circle with people looking out for his best interests is a far cry from the days when Felix simply agreed to take fights just to stay active. It’s a new look for a fighter hoping to make that final push toward being elite. No more excuses. He’s finally “all in.”

“I’m taking this as a career and trying to move forward with it,” Felix said. “Being dedicated and putting in the training I need has really helped me.”

Caroll has won 11 bouts by submission. Lightweight contender Andres Jeudi (5-2, 1 KO) of Somerville, Mass., will face Brendan Rooney (5-1) of Shelton, Conn.

Also on the undercard, rising featherweight star and Johnson & Wales alum Charles Rosa (6-0, 3 KOs) of Boynton Beach, Fla., will return to Twin River for the fourth time in a three-round bout against Philadelphia veteran Brylan Van Artsdalen (9-9, 1 KO), an eight-time Bellator veteran.

FLOYD “MONEY” MAYWEATHER OPENING PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES FROM MGM GRAND IN LAS VEGAS

Floyd Mayweather
LAS VEGAS (March 8, 2014) – Boxing superstar and 10-Time World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather (45-0, 26 KOs) held court at a jam-packed press conference at MGM Grand today to formally discuss his 147-pound welterweight world title unification bout against the dangerous, hard-hitting Marcos “El Chino” Maidana (34-3, 31 KOs) in the main event of “THE MOMENT” on Saturday, May 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

Addressing media members hours before the start of Saturday night’s “TOE TO TOE: Canelo vs. Angulo” event on SHOWTIME PPV, Mayweather touched on a variety of subjects, including Maidana, the upcoming matchup with the Argentine slugger, his future and more. Also speaking were Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions and Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME SPORTS.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER, 10-Time World Champion, Five Division World Champion and WBC Welterweight

“Maidana is a young, strong and tough competitor. He’s a guy that I can’t overlook. You can never take any fighter for granted because anything can happen.

“I believe in dedicating myself to my craft. This is my 18th year in the sport. I’ve had a strong run and we’ve got three more fights after this one. I truly believe in taking one fight at a time.

“This was my first week out [in training camp] and we had a tremendous week.

“Hopefully, some day I help some of this up-and-coming talent and promote them. Boxing is growing and is here to stay.

“I’m not scared of any opponent. I fight who I want to fight.

“Tonight is another marvelous show. Canelo is one hell of a fighter and Angulo is too. It’s going to be nonstop action. This is a fight not to miss.

“Canelo’s a different breed. A lot of people think because of the way I made Canelo look, they’re going to be able to do the same thing, but that’s not true. He’s a strong fighter.

“Tonight’s fight is different than my fight with Canelo back in September. They [Canelo and Angulo] have great styles and styles make fights. This fight is tailor made to be a war.

“I fight myself. I don’t fight to break Ali’s record or Sugar Ray Robinson’s record. I fight to please myself. I know in my heart where I’m rated. I didn’t fight in Ali’s era. This is my era.

“I don’t know who my three next opponents will be. A lot of people ask me that. You want to fight me? Earn it.

“I’m a strong critic of myself. I’m really hard on myself. Even with the Canelo fight and the fight before that fight, I wasn’t happy with my performance. I haven’t reached my peak yet. I know I can do better.

“I’ve been in the sport of boxing for a long time, but I haven’t been able to bring my ‘A-game’ totally out. I’ve beaten fighters with my ‘C-Game’ and with my ‘D-Game,’ but I haven’t been able to beat anybody with my ‘A-Game.’

“I’m a firm believer that before you can go anywhere, you have to conquer the level that you are at, just like young kids do it today with video games, they have to finish one level to go to the next one. Conquer one level at the time, and only then you’ll get where you want to go to.

“I always say that I’m a clean athlete and that I should be randomly tested anytime, urine and blood.

“I have only seen Maidana’s last fight against Broner. I’ve only watched the first six or seven rounds. I’ve also seen highlights of other fights, but not many. He’s a good fighter; I’m not taking him for granted. I don’t take anybody for granted.”

ROBERT GARCIA, Maidana’s Trainer
“In 1998, Floyd and I won a title in the same year in the same weight division. Sixteen years later, I’m training my fighters to fight him and he’s still a champion. That is hard to believe.

“Our guy Maidana earned this fight. I want to thank Mayweather for taking this fight.

“There were other names out there, but Mayweather is a boxing person and he made the right choice. I think Maidana earned the right to fight Floyd. He’s going to come out and do his best. Just like he did against Adrien Broner.

“Broner was supposed to be the next great thing. What Maidana did to him was something that no one believed could happen. It takes hard work and dedication.

“It takes a great fighter that listens to what his coaches tell him to do and we’re going to come out and do our best to please everyone with a great fight and come out with a win. Everyone has a time and it could be this time. No one has a blueprint because no one has ever beaten Floyd.”

RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions
“Floyd Mayweather did it again. He picked the most dangerous opponent he could have.

“It’s going to be a thrilling fight. Maidana is ready and he’s going to come to try to knock out Mayweather.

“The tickets went on sale this morning at 10 a.m. There are 16,000 seats [in the arena] and 14,000 were sold with over $12 million in the bank already.”

LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions
“Maidana’s a tremendous fighter. He can crack with either hand and Floyd is going to have to be at his best to beat him on May 3.

[On the Mayweather Promotions opponent poll] “Floyd has over 11 million followers across different platforms, all of those were taken under consideration.

“On the first tweet he put out, there were over 50,000 comments on the first two hours. My team and I went through all of the responses, and Maidana was an overwhelming favorite.

“Maidana earned the right to fight Floyd and May 3 is going to be a great night for boxing.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME SPORTS
“SHOWTIME Sports has become the home of the most compelling fights and the biggest events in the sport of boxing. And there are no bigger events than those featuring Floyd Mayweather.

“We are proud to be part of the May 3rd event and look forward to another incredible night at the fights.”

Pacquiao_NY_140205_003a
LOS ANGELES (March 8, 2014) — Fighter of the Decade MANNY “Pacman” PACQUIAO and his Hall of Fame Trainer World-Famous FREDDIE ROACH broke camp today in General Santos City in the Philippines and are en route to the U.S. On Monday, at Roach’s Hollywood-based Wild Card Boxing Club, they will begin phase two of training for their mission to recapture the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight championship title that undefeated two-division defending champion TIMOTHY “Desert Storm” BRADLEY, JR. won off of Pacquiao via a controversial split decision in 2012.

Team Pacquiao is scheduled to land at Los Angeles International Airport’s Tom Bradley International Terminal today at 6:15 p.m. PT via Philippine Airlines Flight 102. This link will give you updated arrival information. http://www1.philippineairlines.com/index.php/flights/actual-flight-status/

“We had a great camp in the Philippines and Manny, as usual, is way ahead of schedule in his conditioning , and very motivated,” said Roach. “The real business begins for us on Monday at Wild Card. We have great sparring waiting for Manny. He wants that title back. If Bradley thinks he’s going to see the same compassionate Manny he saw the first time they fought he is in for a very big surprise.”

Pound for pound titans Pacquiao (55-5-2, 38 KOs), the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani Province in the Philippines, and defending world champion Bradley (31-0, 12 KOs), of Palm Springs, Calif., will go mano a mano in their eagerly-anticipated WBO welterweight championship rematch on Saturday, April 12 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. It will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. This will also be Pacquiao’s first fight in the U.S. since 2012.

When Pacquiao and Bradley rumbled the first time, on June 9, 2012 at MGM Grand, Bradley’s hand was raised via a controversial split decision, ending Pacquiao’s welterweight title reign as well as his seven-year, 15-bout winning streak. Though both fighters claimed victory neither was satisfied. Destiny may have played a hand in their first battle but it will be survival of the fittest that determines the winner of this exciting rematch.

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with MP Promotions and Tecate, remaining tickets for Pacquiao vs. Bradley 2 are priced at $1,000, $800, $600, $400, $250 and $150, not including applicable service charges. SANTA CRUZ EYES FRAMPTON WORLD TITLE SHOWDOWN IN A CLASH HE BELIEVES WILL BE ‘FIGHT OF THE YEAR’

leo-santa-cruz
LONDON (March 8) – World champion Leo Santa Cruz will adjust his glare towards rising star Carl Frampton should he prevail in his upcoming fight.

The Mexican sensation who has been blasting his way past all comers in the super-bantamweight division is hoping to come through his next challenge against Cristian Mijares this Saturday night in Las Vegas before setting up a megafight with Ulsterman Frampton.

Both men are renowned for their come-forward, whirlwind boxing style that has captured the imagination of both casual and hardcore fans alike.

The pair seem destined to cross paths in the very near future with Frampton fighting in a WBC eliminator in his next fight in April against Hugo Cazares, with the victor set to get a shot at Santa Cruz’s title.

Speaking exclusively to BoxNation, ahead of his bout with Mijares – which will feature on the undercard of the all Mexican affair between Canelo Alvarez and Alfredo Angulo at the MGM Grand – Santa Cruz is eyeing a showdown with the popular Frampton should he win tonight.

“Carl’s been saying he wants to fight me and I’ve seen him in a couple of fights. He’s a great fighter, undefeated, he comes forward like me and throws parallel punches and pressures a lot. So I think it would make a really great fight for the fans,” Santa Cruz said.

“If I win my next fight and he wins his, it could be the next fight which happens. He’s in an eliminator to fight me in his fight, so if our managers can work out something I think it can definitely happen next if we both come through and win,” he said.

The two-weight world champion and reigning undefeated WBC super-bantamweight world champion, has taken notice of the Belfast blaze Frampton as he has blitzed his way past a host of top line contenders in recent outings.

It is this exciting and crowd-pleasing style which Santa Cruz believes could make for an instant classic when the pair finally square-off in the ring, though he is not expecting it to last the full twelve rounds.

“I come forward; he comes forward, so there will be no running. I think it will be a fight where we are both in the middle of the ring, giving a war and I think neither of us is going to want to go back,” he said.

“It could be ‘Fight of the Year’. I don’t think the fight would go the distance; it could finish before the twelve rounds the way that we will fight.

“I think he [Frampton] comes forward well, and is strong, always pressuring. But I think he drops his hands too much – I think that’s one of the mistakes he does. I could catch him or I could work the body and finish him right there,” Santa Cruz told BoxNation.

Frampton’s popularity in Northern Ireland has seen him sell out arena-after-arena in his last few fights and Santa Cruz is open to crossing the Atlantic, possibly as early as this September.

“It doesn’t matter to me where I fight him. It’s up to wherever my manager and promoter think the best place is. I’ll fight him wherever. If they want me to fight him in Ireland, I’ll come over and fight him in Ireland. If they want me to fight him here [United States], I’ll fight him here. Wherever they make the fight I’m willing to battle him,” said Santa Cruz.

“I think the fight is likely for between September-November around those months. After this fight [against Mijares] I’ll take a little break and get ready for those months because it’s a big fight, so we have to have a little more time to get ready for it,” he said.

The 25-year-old has more pressing matters on his mind for now though, as he faces a tricky opponent in the slick Mijares who is a former world champion and a well-schooled campaigner.

Having won 49 contests in his 58 fights, the southpaw will be looking to tear up the script about any future plans Santa Cruz may have, but the man known as ‘Terremoto’ is refusing to over look the experienced Mijares.

“Mijares is a great fighter, a complicated lefty. He’s going to try and box but I’m ready to go out there and pressure him a lot. I’m going to let my hands go and do what I’ve been doing in the gym to beat him,” Santa Cruz said.

“His main strengths are his combinations and his lateral movement. I think he’ll be moving around the ring and trying to throw one, two, three, and then move, trying to beat me like that on points.

“He’ll be trying to counterpunch me but I’ll be cutting off the ring, we’re not going to allow him to do that. I’ll try and break him down so that he won’t run and we can beat him like that,” he said.

UNDERDOG ANGULO TO USE INCARCERATION TO INSPIRE VICTORY OVER CANELO AS TRAINER HUNTER PREDICTS A ‘SAVAGE AFFAIR’ AHEAD OF CLASH LIVE ON BOXNATION

alfredo-angulo
LONDON (March 7) – Underdog Alfredo Angulo is looking to draw on his time spent locked away in a detention centre to help push him to victory over Canelo Alvarez this weekend.

The man known as ‘El Perro’ spent over seven months in ICE Detention Center in El Centro, California having voluntarily checked in back in January 2012 due to an expired Visa.

At the time the light-middleweight star was expecting to stay no more than three days until the issue was sorted but ended up spending a large chunk of 2012 away from his family and boxing.

This ordeal helped toughen Angulo and he will be looking to draw on this uncertain period in his life to overcome Canelo on the biggest stage, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas this Saturday night, a place that not so long ago seemed a million miles away.

“There were a couple times when I was in the immigration detention centre that I wanted to quit,” said Angulo. “But my team of lawyers always motivated me, wouldn’t let me stay down for too long and kept telling me that justice would prevail and that I shouldn’t give up,” he said.

“I always dreamed of being a headliner on a major card, and here it is. I am so ready for Saturday.”

The man that stands in his way, Canelo, is a Mexican idol in his own right and when the pair clash live on BoxNation many expect a potential ‘Fight of the Year’ battle to be witnessed.

The 31-year-old Angulo is unfazed by the occasion and has promised to give fight fans the type of all-action affair they have grown to love and expect when he enters the ring.

“Style-wise, this is a great matchup for the fans and both of us. Fans are going to get a great fight. I’m ready to chase him or fight him like a true Mexican warrior. I plan to test him like he’s never been tested before,” he said.

“I don’t think anyone has ever hit Canelo as hard as I’m going to hit him. I’m totally relaxed and confident. Camp was amazing and I am in unbelievably great shape,” Angulo said.

The man that will be in Angulo’s corner for the fight is esteemed trainer Virgil Hunter who joined forces with the hard-hitting Mexican on his release in late 2012.

The pair quickly bonded and have created a father-son relationship, with Hunter predicting this weekend’s fight to be an extraordinary battle that will change the course of history for both men.

“This is going to be a remarkable night, I can sense that. I’ve had a couple of weeks to reflect on this fight. I know the motto has been ‘toe-to-toe’ but I just have this feeling that I don’t think both men are going to walk out that ring the same after Saturday night,” said Hunter.

“I just anticipate such a savage affair that it’s going to be taken out of my hands, out of coach Reynoso’s hands [Canelo’s trainer] and its pretty much going to be left up to both fighters,” he said.

The Hayward based trainer has also called on the men in charge to let both men fight it out, in an affair which will be a true test of heart and desire.

“I’m asking the officials and judges to just let them go because I can just sense this storm coming – just let them go. If Alfredo gets knocked down just let him get back up and go. If Canelo gets knocked down let him get back up and go,” he said.

“It’s going to be taken out of our hands. This is going to be a savage, savage affair. I’ve been anticipating this for the last couple of weeks and I can just feel it – it’s kind of bothering me.

“At the same time I hope that I can rise to the occasion and that my fighter can walk out of that ring intact with many future fights – and the same for Canelo and his team.

“But there’s just something about this fight, I really truly believe it’s going to exceed what we have probably ever seen before,” Hunter said.

Meanwhile, before the action kicks-off Stateside, BoxNation will also be showing rising star Paul Butler’s showdown with Argentine Oreste Nieva.

The duo clash for the vacant WBA Intercontinental bantamweight belt at the Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool, in a bill which also features Kevin Satchell against Isaac Quaye for the Commonwealth title and Ronnie Heffron taking on John Thain in a light-middleweight contest.

The British and Commonwealth super-flyweight champion, Butler, has his eyes on bigger prizes should he come through the challenge with Nieva, as he hopes to take on Stuart Hall in the near future for his IBF bantamweight world title.

“I would love that fight,” said Butler. “That’s what I’m working towards, getting my shot at the world title. I know that I have the style and ability to beat Hall. I’ve seen Hall at close quarters, I’ve sparred with him and the sessions have always been top class. I know if we meet it would be an instant classic – I’m sure about that,” he said.

“My aim is to get past Nieva on Saturday night and look impressive. It’s not an easy fight, and I’m sure like a lot of my fight’s it’s going to be really exciting. But when I come through that then we can start looking at taking on Hall or Martin Ward, depending on who wins their fight. I’m ready for whoever, because I know my time is coming,” said a confident Butler.

The action from Liverpool kicks off at 7pm this Saturday on BoxNation, with episode 2 of ‘All Access: Canelo vs. Angulo’ just before at 6.30pm.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Alfredo Angulo is live on BoxNation (Sky Ch.437/Virgin Ch.546) this Sunday from 2am. Visit www.boxnation.com to subscribe.

Donovan George return to the ring postponed to April 18

Chicago, IL (March 7, 2014) Super middleweight contender Donovan “DA BOMB” George will not be fighting tonight, MARCH 7 in Chicago as was previously announced by his co-promoters, Chicago’s Hitz Boxing and Round 3 Productions.

George was to have made his highly anticipated return to battle in the main event at the Horseshoe Casino presented FIGHT NIGHT at The Belvedere in Elk Grove Village, however the action-packed card will still take place.

“It’s very frustrating that we were unable to find a suitable opponent for Donovan to fight on Friday night” said Bobby Hitz, President of Hitz Boxing. “We had five different boxers lined up each of whom would have provided for an exciting, fan friendly bout but unfortunately the Illinois State Athletic Commission refused to allow any of them to face Donovan, thereby robbing the fans of seeing a terrific fight.”

Added Hitz, “The commission’s actions seem to be arbitrary in this case and were not fully articulated to me this week. In my 25 years of promoting in Chicago this has truly been one of the most trying periods
in putting a fight together.”

George will return to action in the Chicago area on Friday, April 18 at the next Hitz Boxing/Round 3 Productions event at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana.

“Donovan is the most popular fighter in Chicago and while this has been a tough week for him we’re confident that he will return to the ring in fine form on April 18 and ready to put on a spectacular performance” said Frank Mugnolo of Round 3 Productions.

BERNARD “THE ALIEN” HOPKINS VS. BEIBUT SHUMENOV LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP UNIFICATION TO TAKE PLACE SATURDAY, APRIL 19 LIVE ON SHOWTIME® FROM THE DC ARMORY IN WASHINGTON, D.C.

Bernard Hopkins
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 7, 2014) – Washington, D.C. is known as a city where history is made. On Saturday, April 19, another historic event will take place in the nation’s capital when IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Bernard Hopkins faces WBA World Champion Beibut Shumenov in an attempt, at 49-years-old, to become the oldest fighter in boxing history to unify world titles. The DC Armory, the site of several championship boxing matches in the last year, will host the return of the future Hall of Famer to the capital for the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® main event (9 p.m. ET/PT delayed on the West Coast).

In the co-main event, popular undefeated WBO Middleweight World Champion Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin defends his title for the third time when he meets WBO European titleholder and former interim WBO Junior Middleweight Champion Lukas Konecny. Quillin has been one of boxing’s most exciting competitors over the last few years; scoring 11 knockdowns in his last three title fight wins. In Konecny, he will be in the ring with a crafty and experienced veteran, a former Olympian who has never been stopped.
Tickets priced at $25, $50, $75, $200 and $300, plus applicable taxes, fees and services charges, go on sale today at 10 a.m. ET are available online at http://www.ticketmaster.com, all Ticketmaster locations or by calling (800) 745-3000. The DC Armory Box Office will be open on fight night only from 3:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m. ET.

“It’s no secret that my one of my biggest goals has been to unify the titles and getting to do that in a city where I have a lot of history is the best-case scenario,” said Hopkins, who defended his middleweight title with a seventh-round technical knockout of Robert Allen in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 6, 1999. “I’m coming back to break another record by unifying the title and I’m looking to get my first knockout since I fought Oscar De La Hoya in 2004. I know Shumenov is tough, but I’m tougher and I’m not going to let him make a name for himself by being the one to stop me.”

The legendary Hopkins made his first attempt at a world title in Washington, D.C. in 1993 when he lost to Roy Jones Jr. at RFK Stadium, just steps away from the DC Armory. A year later, he faced Segundo Mercado in neighboring Landover, Md. and won the IBF middleweight world title, which he held for over a decade.

“I am very excited that the fight is going to happen against one of the greatest fighters ever,” said Shumenov. “I am going to do everything possible and impossible to get the victory.”

“I can’t wait to get back in the ring and defend my title once again,” said Quillin. “I’m excited to be fighting in front of the great fans in D.C. and I will give them a show on April 19. Konecny is an experienced challenger, and you can’t overlook anyone with 50 wins, but I’m going home with the title, and I’ll be looking for another knockout.”

“I have a lot more experience than Quillin and the fans will see that on April 19,” said Konecy. “This is my first fight in the U.S. and I don’t plan on going home without that belt. Every fighter dreams of fighting for and winning a world championship, and I am thankful for the chance to do that against Peter Quillin.”

“The fans in D.C. have been enthusiastic and supportive of the sport whenever we’ve brought an event there, and I know they will love this championship doubleheader,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Bernard Hopkins continues to amaze everyone with his performances in the ring, but when he faces Shumenov, he’ll have to pull out all his veteran tricks to keep his amazing streak going. This may be the toughest test he’s faced at light heavyweight.”

“Coming off of a very successful fight card in January, we are pleased to welcome back Golden Boy Promotions and SHOWTIME to the historic DC Armory,” said Erik A. Moses, managing director of Events DC’s Sports and Entertainment Division, which manages the DC Armory and RFK Stadium. “D.C. is a great fight town, and hosting a fight of this caliber will certainly add to the rich history of professional boxing in the nation’s capital. It’s great to see the DC Armory come alive again with big-time boxing, and we look forward to continuing this tradition.”

Boxing’s elder statesman, Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins (54-6-2, 32 KOs) continues to achieve remarkable goals in the world of boxing-and has done just that since turning pro in 1988. But he has amazed even more with his exploits over the last few years, as he twice became the oldest man to win a major world championship in the ring. Now 49-years-old, the pride of Philadelphia, Pa., had one of his best years yet in 2013, defeating Tavoris Cloud in March to win the IBF Light Heavyweight World Championship, and then successfully defending his title in October with an exciting win over Karo Murat. On April 19, the future Hall of Famer returns in an attempt to unify the 175-pound title. Additionally, as a partner in Golden Boy Promotions, Hopkins has undertaken out-of-the ring promotional duties that further solidify him as one of the most recognized and revered figures in the sport.

A native of Shymkent, Kazakhstan who now fights out of Las Vegas, 30-year-old Beibut Shumenov (14-1, 9 KOs) made his way to the top of the light heavyweight division with lightning-fast speed, winning his IBA title against Byron Mitchell in 2009, in just his eighth professional fight before adding the WBA title by defeating Gabriel Campillo two fights later in 2010. Since then, Shumenov, a 2004 Olympian for Kazakhstan, has successfully defended his title five times, defeating Vyacheslav Uzelkov, William Joppy, Danny Santiago, Enrique Ornelas and Tamas Kovacs. But this April, Shumenov gets his opportunity to make a name for himself in the history books if he can defeat Bernard Hopkins.

Proudly wearing the championship belt of the division Hopkins once ruled, New York’s
Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (30-0, 22 KOs) has gotten his reign atop the 160-pound division off to a rousing start with a decision win over Hassan N’Dam for the WBO crown in October of 2012, then going on to successful defenses twice with stoppages of Fernando Guerrero and Gabriel Rosado. Now ready to take on the challenge of Konecny, the 30-year-old boxer-puncher–who also owns wins over Winky Wright, Craig McEwan, Jesse Brinkley and Fernando Zuniga-is eager to begin his 2014 campaign with another knockout victory.

A five-time National Champion for the Czech Republic who also represented his nation in the 2000 Olympics, 35-year-old Lukas Konecny (50-4, 23 KOs) will make his United States debut on April 19 after years of fighting Europe’s best. Konecny plans on making it a memorable visit as he challenges for the WBO Middleweight World Championship. A former interim WBO Junior Middleweight Champion, Konecny made a permanent move to 160 pounds in 2013, and after winning the WBO European Title with a win over Karim Achour and successfully defending it by defeating Moez Fhima, he put himself in line for world title honors against Quillin.

Hopkins vs. Shumenov, a 12-round fight for the IBF, IBA and WBA Light Heavyweight World Championship, will take place Saturday, April 19, at the DC Armory in Washington, D.C. The event is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Corona and AT&T. The live SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast will begin at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) and will be available in Spanish via secondary audio programming (SAP).

Channel 5 will broadcast the quarter-finals in two programmes, each featuring two live contests, the first at Rivermead, Reading, on March 15th and the second on March 22nd, live from Ponds Forge Arena, Sheffield.

Middleweight star Murray signs with Golden Gloves

Martin Murray is targeting a November showdown with hard-hitting middleweight world champion Gennady Golovkin after signing a lucrative seven-figure, three-fight deal with Africa’s largest promoter, Golden Gloves.

The 31-year-old from St Helens in the UK split with Ricky Hatton last month after a frustrating year that saw him fight just once after his narrow defeat to Sergio Martinez in Argentina last April.

Murray (26-1-1) will fight in June, November and next February in Monte Carlo and also hopes to have a warm-up bout in Germany on April 5 on the undercard of Juergen Braehmer’s WBA light-heavyweight title defence against Enzo Maccarinelli.

“I’m made up,” said Murray, who is ranked No 1 by the WBA and No 6 by the IBF. “It’s great knowing I’m getting with someone who is going to give me some direction in my career.

“The purses are really good and they’re willing to invest in me. The money is amazing, I can’t believe it’s true. We’re hoping to fight Golovkin in November so it’s a good deal all round.”

Murray is confident he can still earn a third shot at top honours.

He drew with Felix Sturm in 2011 but has struggled for momentum since.

Murray laboured to a points win in a rematch with Sergey Khomitsky last December and was due to face Australian Jarrod Fletcher in February for the regular WBA belt with Golovkin being promoted to “Super” champion.

But the WBA ruled against the move and Murray withdrew from his fight due to a hand injury.

“I’ve never been with someone who’s given me solid dates,” he added. “I was fed up with getting myself ready only for fights to get cancelled. When the fights did come round, like the one in December, I was so fed up it’s no wonder I performed like I did.

“I was making myself believe something would happen but I had three press conferences for fights that didn’t happen. We’re hoping for a decent opponent in June but it’s about me getting back firing on all cylinders.

“The promoter is working towards lots of different routes and getting me sanctioned by the different organisations so it should end in a title shot.

“The deal secures my future and the future of my wife and kids which has always been the most important thing for me.

“I’ve been that frustrated that if I wasn’t in the mix for big fights, I would have jacked it in. I’ve not been in tough fights and I only turned pro when I was 25. I’m looking forward to continuing the hard work I’ve been putting in.”

Murray was offered a rematch with Sturm but the money on offer was substantially lower than the purse he received for the first fight.

With no suitable offer on the table, Murray exercised his right to leave Hatton.

“The only fight I’ve knocked back was immediately after the Martinez fight when they offered me Chavez in Mexico but I needed an operation on my elbow,” he said. “I accepted the fight two months later but Top Rank refused it.”

Golden Gloves’ Rodney Berman, meanwhile, welcomed Murray to the team, having secured his signature despite the interest of a number of rival promoters.

“We at Golden Gloves are delighted to welcome Martin into our Golden Gloves family,” he said. “Being a huge Murray fan we are committed to taking him to another world title opportunity. He will debut for us in June at a venue to be finalised in Monte Carlo and will then be kept active pending a mammoth show in Monte Carlo in November.

“We will move heaven and& earth to ensure that Martin gets the world title opportunity in November he so richly deserves. We are delighted with the signing and are now looking to sign one or two more leading European fighters and are in talks with their management.”

A live double header: Butler v Nieva & Canelo v Angulo

Canelo Alvarez
It’s another big live double header exclusively on BoxNation this Saturday night!

From 7pm we’re in Merseyside where local hero Paul Butler steps up to bantamweight as he eyes a summer showdown with IBF World Champion Stuart Hall. The Ellesmere Port hitman faces highly-rated Argentine Oreste Nieva with the Vacant WBA Intercontinental Bantamweight title on the line on a bill which also features Kevin Satchell defending his Commonwealth crown against Isaac Quaye and a tasty domestic duel between Ronnie Heffron and John Thain.

Then, from 2am, we’re headed to the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, where Saul “Canelo” Alvarez looks to bounce back from his first career loss to Floyd Mayweather against Mexican rival Alfredo Angulo. Three world title fights make up a super-stacked undercard, including WBC Super-Bantamweight champ Leo Santa Cruz defending against Cristian Mijares as the winner of Frampton v Cazares lies in wait, while Omar Figueroa risks the WBC World Lightweight title against Ricardo Alvarez and Carlos Molina puts his IBF World Light-Middleweight title on the line against Jermall Charlo.

“TOE TO TOE: CANELO VS. ANGULO” FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES FROM HOLLYWOOD THEATRE AT MGM GRAND

Saul Alvarez
LAS VEGAS (March 6, 2014) – The fighters and their camps stayed classy and soft-spoken yet confident during Thursday’s final press conference for “TOE TO TOE: Canelo vs. Angulo” taking place this Saturday, March 8, live on SHOWTIME PPV® (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) from MGM Grand Garden Arena.

In Saturday’s 12-round super welterweight main event, popular Mexican boxing superstar and former world champion Canelo Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KOs) faces game and aggressive, upset-minded countryman Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo (22-3, 18 KOs).

Exciting, unbeaten two-division world champion and current WBC Super Bantamweight Champion Leo “Terremoto” Santa Cruz (26-0-1, 15 KOs) will defend his 122-pound belt against former three-time world champion Cristian “El Diamante” Mijares (48-7-2, 22 KOs) in the co-main event. In other PPV matches, former two-time world champion Jorge “Niño de Oro” Linares (35-3, 23 KOs) takes on offensive-minded Japanese contender Nihito Arakawa (24-3-1, 16 KOs) in a 10-round lightweight scrap and IBF Junior Middleweight World Champion Carlos Molina (22-5-2, 6 KOs) is scheduled to defend his 154-pound crown against undefeated Jermall Charlo (17-0, 13 KOs).

Molina is facing some legal obstacles, however, and as of late Thursday, his fight with Charlo was in jeopardy of being cancelled.

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions and the emcee at the final press conference streamed live at sports.sho.com, alluded to the uncertainty of Molina-Charlo and announced that, if necessary, it would be replaced with a 135-pound matchup between Ricardo Alvarez (23-2-3, 13 KOs), an older brother of Canelo, and Sergio “Yeyo” Thompson (28-3, 26 KOs).

“There are some issues which Carlos Molina is facing related to some outstanding warrants,” Schaefer said. “His legal team and his promoter are currently working on trying to sort these issues out and have him ready, hopefully, for the weigh-in and ultimately for the fight. I know that Molina wants to fight and I know he has a team behind him which is going to do whatever it can to get him here in time.”

Tickets for the event promoted by Golden Boy Promotions are on sale and priced at $600, $400, $200 and $100, not including applicable service charges and taxes, with a total ticket limit of 10 per person. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000. Tickets also are available at www.mgmgrand.com or www.ticketmaster.com. Movie theater tickets are available at participating theater box offices and online at www.FathomEvents.com.

Below is what the fighters, their camps and executives said at Thursday’s final press conference at The Hollywood Theatre inside the MGM Grand:

CANELO ALVAREZ:
“There isn’t much more to say – I’m ready to go. Boxing is about style and I think with his [Angulo’s] style and my style it will be a war. We are going to give you a war. I always say talk is cheap so we’ll see what happens on Saturday night.

“It is a big responsibility to headline on pay-per-view. It shows the end result of everything I’ve done in the gym.

“I’m going to give it my best. I’m going to get the victory.

“Angulo is a very dangerous opponent. He doesn’t mind getting hit as long as he can hit back. It’s a fight that can change in one punch on either side.

“I’m calm and tranquil because that’s part of the preparation for this fight.

“I know I’m strong, I know what I have to do. I will follow my game plan and come out with the win.

“Angulo keeps coming forward, breaks you down and keeps coming. It’ll be challenging to get a knockout against a guy like Angulo, but you can’t blame me for trying.”

JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, Canelo’s Manager:
“At this point, there is not much to say except that all of us in Canelo’s camp are ready. Both fighters are ready to fight. Saturday, the world will see a great fight between two Mexican warriors.”

EDDIE REYNOSO, Canelo’s Trainer:
“We’ve had a great 10-week camp. It’s always tough to be away from our families, but this is our job. We are well aware that Angulo is a dangerous puncher who can change everything with one punch. That being said, we’re ready for him, whether he wants to stand or to box. Canelo also has a punch. On Saturday, Canelo is going to give his fans a great victory.”

ALFREDO ANGULO:
“I want to thank everybody – Golden Boy Promotions, SHOWTIME, MGM Grand, all those working on this event, my team – for this opportunity and for their faith in me. I’m ready.

“I’ve been working very hard for this fight, and I could not be in better condition.

“Between Canelo and me, this is going to be a great fight, a really, really great fight.”

VIRGIL HUNTER, Angulo’s Trainer:
“This is going to be a remarkable night. It’s going to be a savage affair. I sense a storm coming. There’s something about this fight that has me thinking, anticipating that it is going to exceed everything we’ve been expecting and be something we’ve never seen before.”

LEO SANTA CRUZ:
“This is my first time on pay-per-view and to be the co-main event is very exciting. Thanks to everyone who got me to this place.

“I just feel 100 percent ready. I know Mijares is a great fighter. I watched him fight when I was growing up and getting my career started so I know this is going to be the hardest fight of my career. But that’s why we trained really hard – to give a great fight to all the fans and to make the fight of the night.

“It’s going to be really hard [to be the fight of the night] because Canelo and Angulo are great fighters so we’re going to have to work really hard to beat them. But we’ll try our best and give our fans a great fight.”

CRISTIAN MIJARES:
“I don’t have much to say. The fight is almost upon us. Like Leo, I can guarantee that his is going to be a war on Saturday night. It’s almost time. I just want to make weight. I’m definitely ready to fight.”

JERMALL CHARLO:
“I’m 17-0, 23-years-old and fighting on the big stage at MGM. I definitely feel I belong with Canelo and all of the other young fighters. I’ve been on weight for a month.

“Obviously, I want the fight to happen. If it doesn’t, I will fall short of my goal. I know I’m ready, my team is ready, and the city of Houston is ready for me to bring home that world title. I’m going to continue to train and think like it is happening.

“I’m sure I will be very, very disappointed if it doesn’t [happen]. When I was first told that something was up with Molina, I thought they were playing with me, figuring here I am, on the eve of being on boxing’s biggest stage, there’s no way we don’t fight. But it was not a joke.

“If we don’t fight, I’m just going to work that much harder.”

JORGE LINARES:
“I’m very grateful for this opportunity. This is going to be an important fight and it’s going to be a very, very tough fight. Obviously, my opponent is a very tough fighter. It’s a big stage on pay-per-view so I’m ready for this. It’s going to be a tough challenge but that’s what it’s all about.”

NIHITO ARAKAWA:
“I have prepared myself very well for this fight. I thank Golden Boy Promotions for giving me this opportunity, just like they did last year. I may not have the most experienced record on this card, but I can assure you that I will give 100 percent of myself for this. I’m looking forward to a great fight the day after tomorrow.”

RICARDO ALVAREZ:
“My fight with WBC Lightweight Champion [Omar Figueroa Jr.] fell out, but I’m still here, I’m still ready to fight. We all know accidents happen in boxing, but I’m happy to be here on this big stage. I’m here and I’m ready to fight.”

RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:
“There seems to be a shift going on. More and more fighters, trainers and media members are starting to say, ‘You know what, I’m changing my opinion. I think Angulo is going to knock Canelo out.’ And I think it is this kind of sentiment that shows you what we want to do – we want to put on great fights. Of course, each guy wants to win and they know how important it is for them, their fans and Mexico. Both Canelo and Angulo don’t need any extra motivation. They know it’s a very dangerous fight.

“Talking about warriors and TOE TO TOE action, it doesn’t get any better than the fight between Leo Santa Cruz and Cristian Mijares. Leo is one of the most exciting fighters in boxing and Mijares is a former world champ who wants the belt back. Neither fighter is afraid of anyone.

“If I could watch Nihito Arakawa every day I would. He is the definition of a modern-day gladiator. He fights with hearts, guys and he is everything a fighter should be. We’re all looking forward to watching him and Linares in what should be a war.

“We believe Ricardo Alvarez is ready to fight for a world title. He has to do a little detour because of the injury to Omar Figueroa Jr., but he’s facing an extremely tough fighter in Sergio Thompson.”

STEPHEN ESPINOZA, Executive Vic President General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports:
“Over the last year, SHOWTIME and SHOWTIME PPV have become the premier destination for big-time boxing. SHOWTIME has given boxing fans more live fights, more replays of classic fights and more total hours of boxing programming – and we’ve done it with state of the art technology like the 4K cameras and super slo-mo replays and social media integrations, things our competitors aren’t doing. We are committing more resources to boxing programming than anyone else in the sport today – and the viewers have responded enthusiastically, as our audience share has increased by leaps and bounds.

“Our success has been the result of two key factors: (1) We work with first-class partners such as Golden Boy Promotions and the MGM Grand and (2) is the quality of our fights. We put on great fights, competitive fights and this card is a great example. It’s an entire card of pay-per-view-action fighters that is guaranteed excitement.”

Juan Carlos Gomez turns back the clock “The Black Panther” to face Ivica Bacurin this Saturday (March 8th) in Hungary

This Saturday (March 8th) former cruiserweight champion Juan Carlos Gomez (53-3) will be back in action in Kecskemet (Hungary) when he faces Ivica Bacurin (17-4-1) for the vacant WBO International championship on the undercard of Zsolt Erdei’s (33-1) last pro fight against Shalva Jomardashvili (36-6-2).

When you look at Gomez these days, you may get the impression that we are back in the year 2000. Back then – about 15 years ago – “The Black Panther” ruled the cruiserweight division and literally blew away every opponent that crossed his way. In 2001, Gomez moved up to heavyweight because he felt that he could make more money playing with the big boys. After losing to Vitali Klitschko in his only world heavyweight title fight in 2009 it looked like Gomez might retire before he decided to turn back the clock.
“At a certain point I felt that I still had it in me. There was this fire which just never stopped burning”, says Gomez. “At the same time I saw the cruiserweight division – my old kingdom – and felt that it could use some fresh, old blood.” When he turned 40 last summer, “The Black Panther” went back to the gym and worked harder than ever for his last chance. He returned with two easy wins last November before reuniting with his former world champion coach Fritz Sdunek.
“I felt great when I was back at 200 lbs. but there was still something missing until I started working with Fritz again”, adds Gomez. “He was the missing link. We have a great chemistry and I am sure that I will become world champion again with Fritz in my corner.”
By winning the WBO International Championship, “The Black Panther” is hoping to move up in the WBO rankings to chase world champion Marco Huck. “Huck is the best cruiserweight fighter in the world at the moment – until he will face me”, states Gomez. “He is a very active champion and I know that he never backs down from a challenge so I hope he hears me when I say: The Black Panther is hungry! I’m hunting you, champ. And I will not stop until I got your belt!”

Focused Agnew Not Distracted By Kovalev-Stevenson Hype

Atlantic City, NJ: Over the past week or two the boxing world has been consumed with the verbal sparring match happening in the media between Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (23-0-1, 21 KOs) and Adonis Stevenson. But before any Kovalev-Stevenson match can take place “Krusher” will face-off against undefeated challenger Cedric “L.O.W.” Agnew (26-0-0, 13 KOs) for the WBO Light Heavyweight Championship on March 29th at the Ballroom at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ and live on HBO Boxing After Dark.

Agnew has been flying under the radar, so few people know how deeply the sport of boxing runs in his veins. His uncle, Chicago’s own “Mighty” Mike Evans (38-11-1, 27 KOs), started taking Cedric to the gym with him when he was just eight years old. Agnew spent the majority of his childhood in Chicago working out with his pro-boxer uncle. His youngest brother, Frankie, is also a fighter, coming off a Chicago Golden Gloves Championship and contemplating a professional career.

Cedric had a stellar amateur career, winning 110 of his 120 bouts. During his amateur career he won gold medals at the 2003 United States National Junior Olympics, the 2003 Sweden Cup for Under-19’s, the 2004 Chicago Golden Gloves, the 2004 United States Under-19 Championships, the 2006 Chicago Golden Gloves and won a silver medal at the 2004 National Golden Gloves. He also defeated current WBA Champion Beibut Shumenov.

According to Cedric’s promoter, Malcolm Garrett of Garrett Promotions, he was not looking to sign another fighter when he first heard about Cedric. He received a call from legendary boxing trainer Sam Colonna, who has worked with such names as Andrew Golota, Angel Manfredy, Angel Hernandez and Vaughn Bean, and told Garrett he needed to come look at Cedric. According to Garrett, “Sam Colonna told me that Cedric is the most talented fighter to come out of Chicago in over 30 years. When Sam said that, I needed to listen so I signed him.”

Cedric turned pro in 2007 at the age of 20 and has not lost a fight since. He is no stranger to big fights. Agnew defeated Rayco Saunders via unanimous decision on May 1, 2008 (just one year after his professional debut) to take the vacant WBC Continental Americas Light Heavyweight title. Three years later, on November 3, 2011, he knocked out Daniel Judah in the sixth round to take the vacant WBC United States (USNBC) Light Heavyweight title. Finally, on April 12, 2013 he defeated Yusaf Mack via unanimous decision for the USBA light heavyweight title. According to Agnew, “My win over Yusaf was one of the biggest of my career thus far.”

“L.O.W.” is a student of the sport. According to Garrett, Agnew watches almost every fight but especially the fights in the light heavyweight division. He has studied Kovalev extensively and feels he is ready for this fight. Malcolm said, “He believes he is right there with Kovalev. He plans to win the fight. We are hoping for a big upset and he has the ability to upset him. Hopefully the public will enjoy the fight.” And Agnew believes he has what it takes to defeat Kovalev, he said, “My brain and the way I think will be my biggest advantage in the ring. I’m a very smart fighter. I’m just looking to fight my fight, that’s all”

Cedric “L.O.W.” Agnew
When Garrett approached Agnew about the possibility of a fight between him and Kovalev, Agnew did not hesitate. Garrett said, “I have learned when you have to convince a fighter to take a fight you are already in trouble. I was encouraged when Cedric took the fight without an ounce of hesitation. He wants this fight and he knows he’s ready.”

And Agnew is not bothered by the Kovalev-Stevenson hype; he said, “I try not to listen to the media. I’m just focusing on what I need to do come March 29th.” Malcolm is hoping the hype will work to their advantage and that the media is not the only one overlooking Agnew, “I think all the media attention about Kovalev-Stevenson is great and I hope Kovalev is overlooking Cedric like everyone else and it will work to our advantage. This is a fight Cedric wanted. He knows he’s been overlooked – out of the limelight under the radar – but when the bell rings, we will all know.”
