UFC GYM® NAMES HANNIBAL MYERS AS PRESIDENT

Santa Ana, CA – UFC GYM® has appointed Hannibal Myers as the President of its franchise division, effective immediately. Last January, UFC GYM announced the acquisition of LA Boxing, converting over 80 locations in the last 12 months and growing to 100 locations worldwide currently. Myers will play an integral role in developing the overall franchise strategy for UFC GYM to capitalize on opportunities in the health and fitness marketplace.

Myers brings more than 20 years of executive franchise experience, both domestically and internationally, for companies such as Taco Bell, KFC, Seattle’s Best Coffee, Quizno’s and Shoney’s. The Texas native has pioneered non-traditional franchise development, contributing various articles to trade publications and delivering a number of related industry speeches. In this position, Myers will oversee all facets of franchise development, strategy, marketing, operations and finances.

“We thank Anthony Geisler (former President) and want to recognize him, for his stewardship of the UFC GYM brand for the past year and for the foundation he built via LA Boxing,” said NeV CEO, Jim Rowley.

“This decision launches a new era in the business for UFC GYM, developing further opportunities for growth and expansion through the leadership of Hannibal Myers,” Rowley added.

The move follows the recent promotion of Adam Sedlack to President of the Company’s corporate division.

UFC GYM is co-owned by New Evolution Ventures (NeV), Lafayette, CA, and Ultimate Fighting Championship. For more information, visit www.UFCGYM.com and follow UFC GYM at www.Facebook.com/UFCGYM and Twitter: @UFCGYM.

Luis named Cornwall’s Ambassador of the Year!

Cornwall, Ontario (February 24, 2014) – Lightweight contender Tony “Lightning” Luis is Cornwall’s Ambassador of the Year.

Luis, who is 17-2 with 7 knockouts, received the award from the Cornwall Chamber of Commerce and gained fans worldwide following his gutsy performance versus Ivan Redkach January 17 on the Showtime Network. Against Redkach, one of boxing’s best young fighters, Luis pressed the action and exposed flaws in his foe’s style. Unfortunately, the likable 26-year-old had to deal with a poor job by Referee Randy Phillips and questionable judging, dropping a competitive decision.

Outside of the ring, the well-spoken Ontario native is equally as accomplished. In 2010, he graduated from St. Lawrence College with a police foundation degree and currently works full-time with handicapped children and adults. He also volunteers regularly in his community, most recently participating in an anti-bullying campaign with the local Boys & Girls Club.

“My community has been tremendous,” Luis said of Cornwall. “I’m extremely grateful and to be named am ambassador is very humbling. I really enjoy helping others and I’m living my dream. My plan is to give back as much as I can whenever possible throughout the community. Hopefully my next fight can be close to my hometown because I’ve got great support here and Cornwall means everything to me!”

Luis next fight will be announced shortly.

The Popular and Charismatic Kenia Enriquez of Tijuana Makes U.S. Debut at “San Diego Fights”

(San Diego, CA) – For twenty-year old Kenia Enriquez the next step in her career is long overdue. Fighting for the first time outside her hometown of Tijuana on Friday, February 28th, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley, she feels that it’s only the most logical next phase for her. Enriquez will facing the also undefeated Noemi Bosques (4-0-2, 1KO) from Florida in a scheduled six rounder.

After an extraordinary amateur career in which she won sixty-four bouts against only eight defeats and culminated with a bronze medal in the 2011 Mexican nationals, the charismatic Kenia joined the paid ranks in the summer of 2012 with a first round knock out of Guadalupe Valdez.

She went on to fight three more times in her rookie year stopping Carol Castro and defeating by unanimous decision Angelica Dominguez and fellow Tijuana fighter Brenda Flores. Incidentally both ladies, Dominguez and Flores, have only suffered that lone defeat in their careers so far.

Despite a very respectable 2012, Kenia really took off last year with four wins, two by knockout. After going four rounds with the always tough Blanca Raymundo, Kenia knocked out the previously undefeated Rosa Diaz who came into Tijuana with a 4-0 record. In her next fight, Enriquez became only the second woman, along with former WBC champ Ava Knight, to stop the rugged Gloria Salas and her last fight of last year, Enriquez won a shutout unanimous decision over world ranked Kareli Lopez. To put the cherry on top, in her first fight of the 2014 last month, the 5’3″ Kenia stopped Kareli’s sister, the also previously undefeated and Los Mochis’ Fighter of the Year Selene Lopez, in only seventy-six seconds of the first round.

Kenia jumped in the world rankings early last year as the #13 flyweight of the world by the respected World Boxing Council. By the end of 2013, Kenia cracked the top ten at #7 and has fluctuated between that spot and number nine because of the changes to the top ten list, mainly to the 112 pound division by the jr. flyweight champ Kika Chavez. At this point, Kenia understands that every fight is more meaningful than the last.

“I understand what the ranking means and the responsibility that comes with it,” she recently shared. “I want to represent my city, Tijuana, as well as my promoters Bobby D. and Mayen. I have always worked hard but now I put in more of an extra effort because to become a world champion is all I ever wanted since I laced up the gloves.”

Kenia began boxing at the age of thirteen inspired by her father, Gustavo Enriquez, who boxed. As an amateur and as a young pro, she’s had the opportunity to work in the gym as well as spar with a who’s who of female boxing such as Jackie Nava, Arely Mucino, Mariana Juarez, Jolene Blackshear, Amaris Quintana among many others. Kenia realizes that type of experience can only help on her quest to the top.

“I’ve learned a lot from all of them. Each one of them possesses different styles and I know that I will see that style as my career progresses,” she said. “Some days they got the better of them, some days I did but that is part of the work. I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to share a ring with them.”

With that night’s performance, Kenia hopes to win the support of the San Diego crowd who she realizes is a tough one to please.

“Tijuana is a tough town, they their boxing and thank God they have supported me from the beginning of my career. I know that Bobby D. has a reputation in San Diego and I am proud to be a part of his company. I know his audience knows boxing and I am going to go out there and give them a show so that they can stand behind me as I go for a world title for Tijuana and now also for San Diego.”

FORMER UFC TITLE CHALLENGER DAN HARDY TO SERVE AS COLOR COMMENTATOR FOR SIX EXCLUSIVE LIVE EVENTS

Las Vegas, Nev. – Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy – the popular and charismatic former UFC® welterweight title contender – will serve as the color commentator for six UFC Fight Night events to be screened exclusively on UFC FIGHT PASS™, the Ultimate Fighting Championship® organization announced on Friday.

Known for his punching power, punk rock Mohawk hairstyle and quick wit, Hardy remains the only British fighter to ever challenge for a UFC title, losing in a memorably courageous performance to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 111 in March 2010.

Hardy has a MMA record of 25-10, 1NC, but is currently off the active roster having been diagnosed with a rare heart condition a year ago. Although Hardy, still only 31, continues to train in MMA he is fully focused on his new position within the UFC.

Hardy’s first assignment at Octagonside will come on March 8, when he will be calling the action at the same O2 Arena in London where he twice competed as a UFC welterweight contender.

The Briton said: “I’m very excited to be putting on the headset for the UFC. I’ve got the same nerves and butterflies that I had when I first signed for the company as a fighter back in 2008. I think I can bring a great perspective to the color commentator’s role. Researching and breaking down UFC fighters and fights is what I’ve been doing for over 10 years now, only now I am not just concentrating on my own division, but every division. I think I bring a different perspective to the role. Not only have I fought and trained with some of the best fighters in the world, I think I’ve had one of the most varied careers in the history of the UFC.

“If we only look at my 6-4 record in the UFC, I’ve done it all. I’ve knocked people out and I’ve been knocked out. I’ve headlined huge Pay-Per-Views and I’ve fought on the prelims. I’ve fought guys I liked and respected, and I’ve fought in grudge matches. I’ve been in every high-pressure situation a fighter can find himself in, from challenging a pound-for-pound champion like Georges St-Pierre, to fighting in my hometown with all my family and friends in the front row, to fighting to stay in the UFC when I was 0-4 a couple of years ago.

“I’ve packed a lot of experience into my 10 fights in the UFC, and I’m looking forward to sharing that experience and insight with the fans.”

UFC Chief Content Officer Marshall Zelaznik added: “Dan is extremely popular among our fans, and we are very excited that he will be bringing his wealth of experience to six of the upcoming 2014 UFC FIGHT PASS Fight Nights.

“I’d like to add that, as popular as Dan is, he auditioned for the position. And he blew us away with his audition and got the job because he is the best candidate. He has a unique perspective and style of delivery which I know UFC FIGHT PASS subscribers will enjoy.”

Hardy will be part of an all-British announcing team for the six exclusive UFC FIGHT PASS events which will emanate from the British Isles, mainland Europe and the Middle East.

Sitting next to the Outlaw at Octagonside will be veteran mixed martial arts play-by-play broadcaster John Gooden, while the vastly experienced emcee Andy Friedlander will be introducing fighters from inside the Octagon®, serving as the Octagon announcer.

Gooden has earned his reputation on the European mixed martial arts circuit as an insightful play-by-play man and television pundit. Hailing from Greater London, he has competed at a national level in both judo and karate and trained for the last decade in Muay Thai and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Gooden will now call mixed martial arts events exclusively for the UFC.

Friedlander brings a wealth of experience to his role as the voice of the Octagon. He has served as the major event emcee at the famed 90,000 seater Wembley Stadium in London for over a decade, hosting over 100 globally televised soccer matches including two UEFA Champions League finals. He has served in a similar position at Twickenham Stadium – the home of English Rugby Union – and has also become a fixture at major boxing events across the UK. Like his new colleagues, Friedlander is a passionate MMA fan and student of the sport. He currently trains under former UFC veteran Jess Liaudin.

March is a huge month for UFC FIGHT PASS subscribers. On March 1, UFC FIGHT PASS will be the only place to see UFC Fight Night Macau, headlined by a welterweight battle between “Stun Gun” Kim and John Hathaway. Then comes the stacked March 8 London card headlined by No.1 ranked light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson taking on unbeaten British banger Jimi “Posterboy” Manuwa and, on March 9, subscribers will witness the hotly-anticipated season premiere of The Ultimate Fighter Brasil: Team Wanderlei vs Team Sonnen.

UFC Fight Pass is now available in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. It will be rolled out in additional markets throughout 2014, continue to check UFC.TV for updates. Content will vary country to country according to local television blackout rules.

All bouts live and subject to change. Visit UFC.com and UFCFightPass.com or more information.

MIKE REED REFLECTS ON HIS RECENT WIN, RETURNS MARCH 7 IN MARYLAND

WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S.A. – Twenty-one year-old light welterweight professional boxer, Mike “Yes Indeed” Reed (Washington, D.C./Waldorf, MD/pro record: 7-0, with 5 KOs) returns to the ring on Friday night, March 7, 2014, against Bilal Mahasin (Oakland, CA/pro record: 4-0). Reed-Mahasin is scheduled as a six-round bout, which will headline Keystone Boxing’s “World Class Professional Boxing” card at Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, Maryland.
Mike Reed currently trains in Clinton, Maryland, at Dream Team Boxing Gym, which is owned and operated by his father, trainer and manager, Michael “Buck” Pinson. In his most recent fight on January 17, 2014, Reed defeated Phoenix, Arizona’s Jorge Marquez by TKO at 2:34 of Rd 5. In that fight, the referee stopped the action when Marquez pulled away after suffering a perforated eardrum. Reed talked about his fight with Marquez. “I was satisfied with my performance. I thought I won every round, but in the first few rounds, Marquez landed more punches than I would have liked. My corner did a good job of helping me making adjustments in the fight. I used my angles well and my defense was sharp. As the fight went on, I caught fire and found my rhythm. In Round 5, I popped his eardrum with a lead right hook. When that happened, I saw him grab his ear, he took a step back, and I landed another left hand. Right after that, the referee stopped the fight.”

Reed shared some thoughts about his next fight. He said, “My next opponent on March 7 is Bilal Mahasin, who is undefeated, and has been around quality boxers in the Bay Area, such as Andre Ward and Amir Khan. My team has prepared a good game plan for this fight. I’m really looking forward to the challenge. It is important for my ring experience to fight quality opposition like Mahasin. I’m working really hard in camp and plan to leave a good impression on everyone that comes to see me fight. Thank you to promoter Gene Molovinsky and matchmaker Ross Molovinsky of Keystone Boxing for allowing me to headline their show once again.”
Coach Michael Pinson said, “I thought Mike showed a lot of patience in his last fight. He took his time, used his angles well. We work on using angles all the time in the gym. Mike usually fights well off the ropes, but I thought he stayed on the ropes too long against Marquez. I thought Jorge Marquez was another tough test and he forced us to make adjustments. We did what we were supposed to do, enjoyed the victory, and now we move on to our next test. Mike is fighting legitimate challengers every time he steps in the ring, and he is building toward becoming a real special fighter down the road. You don’t learn a whole lot beating up guys who can’t fight back. I’m expecting his next opponent, Bilal Mahasin, to come in shape and be tough. We will be ready for whatever he brings to the fight.”
Pinson continued, “As far as the topic of weight is concerned, Mike hasn’t had difficulty making weight at 140 lbs. When the time is right, we will go down to 135 lbs, but no time table has been set for that goal yet. Although we haven’t found a promotional home just yet, we are thankful for the wonderful opportunity Keystone Boxing has given us to showcase Mike’s talents. The same effort my son gives in the gym is also going towards giving back to his community and getting his undergraduate degree. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Keystone Boxing’s card at Rosecroft on Friday, March 7.”

ALFREDO “EL PERRO” ANGULO AND TRAINER VIRGIL HUNTER MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

alfredo-angulo
Kelly Swanson
We’re excited to be joined today by one of the main event contestants in the “TOE TO TOE Canelo vs. Angulo” pay-per-view event Saturday, March 8. On today’s call is Alfredo Angulo, former WBO Interim Junior Middleweight World Champion; also, Virgil Hunter, Alfredo’s trainer and Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Eric Gomez to translate.

And of course now to make further introductions and talk a little bit more about the show is Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Boy Promotions.

Richard Schaefer
This is going to be the first pay-per-view of the year here in the United States, and it is an all action card, it is “TOE TO TOE.”

I was looking this morning again at the card, and even the non-televised fights I think are just great match ups and exciting fights. It’s definitely one of those cards where you want to be early at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and see all these fights. I saw Jo Jo Diaz is going to be on there, Avery Gibson at 8-0 is going to be on; Francisco Vargas against Abner Cotto, what a great match up that is; the recent signing of Will Tomlinson from Australia, Junior Lightweight, 21-0, against Jerry Belmontes; and then of course Jorge Linares against Nihito Arakawa. Some of those fights will be on the SHOWTIME preview, so they’ll be available to a large audience as a lead-in to the pay-per-view.

And then you get to the SHOWTIME PPV card with Carlos Molina and Jermall Charlo for the IBF Junior Middleweight World Championship; you have Omar Figueroa against Ricardo Alvarez for a WBC Lightweight World Championship, and then you have Leo Santa Cruz against Cristian Mijares for the WBC Super Bantamweight World Championship. I mean, it’s just an unbelievable night of boxing and I think it will be very well received by the pay-per-view audience here in the United States. It is distributed internationally as well, of course, and if the ticket sales are an indication I think this will be a home run. We have over 12,000 tickets sold. Some of the categories are sold out, but there are still tickets available, $600, $400, $200, $150, and I do expect a complete sell out at the MGM Grand.

I want to thank our colleagues at MGM. I want to thank our sponsors as well, Corona, AT&T, and Casamigos Tequila. The Carlos Molina-Jermall Charlo fight is promoted in association with Warriors Boxing. The fight of course is going to be distributed live on SHOWTIME PPV beginning at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, 6:00 p.m. Pacific, and it can be heard in Spanish as well using a secondary audio programming.

So, without any further ado I’d like to thank Virgil, and I’d like to thank Alfredo Angulo as well, for making themselves available today. I’ve got an update from camp, and I hear Alfredo is looking sensational. This is exactly the kind of fight one gets up for; where you will see without any question the best Alfredo Angulo we have seen. And we know Alfredo Angulo, with a record of 22 wins, 2 losses, and 18 KO’s, when Alfredo is at his best it’s very, very difficult for anyone to beat him. So he not only has heart but he has that iron will to win.

The man who gets him in shape to get him ready is the 2011 Boxing Writers of America Trainer of the Year, Virgil Hunter, who is obviously one of the most respected trainers in the world and trains many, many stars, including of course Andre Ward and Amir Khan. So, I know he’s very confident in Alfredo, and I’d like to turn it over now to Virgil to make some opening comments and talk maybe a little bit about training camp.

Virgil Hunter
I agree with Richard, Alfredo is very much up for this fight and into this fight. That’s not to say he wasn’t in any other bouts that he did, but we understand the magnitude of this opportunity and we intend to make the most of it.

I’m very pleased with the camp situation. We’re fortunate to have several of the guys in camp doing mini camps and conditioning, and because of that we’re able to provide Alfredo with a lot of different looks in sparring, which I feel complements the style that he has and he has the opportunity to pick up on various things that the styles offer.

Everything’s going great, no injuries, no setbacks, we’re right on schedule, we’ll be on target on everything, and you’re going to have a very determined fighter now, Alfredo Angulo, on March 8, and it’s going to be a fight that I don’t think the world, anybody in the boxing world should want to miss. I think everybody should tune in.

R. Schaefer
You mentioned the word “opportunity” and I agree with you, I think in boxing a lot of it has to do with opportunity. There are a lot of talented fighters, there are a lot of hungry fighters, but it is about creating these opportunities, and when Alfredo talked to me and really wanted a fight with Canelo, obviously there are a lot of fighters out there who would love to have this fight because Canelo is one of the superstars of the sport. When you are the kind of fighter like Alfredo is, a warrior, always looking for the biggest and best challenges, then that is exactly what he wants.

For us here at Golden Boy I like to get these kinds of opportunities and then it is up to Alfredo to have the right motivation, we know he has the talent and we know he has the desire to get up and show on March 8 who is the best 154 pounder. With Alfredo, I got to know him a bit outside of the ring as well. He truly is one of the kindest and nicest people outside of the ring I have ever met, and a stark contrast with the person in the ring, where he is just a vicious warrior and always on the attack, and I think that’s why he has so many fans all around the world. When Angulo fights, people watch, and there’s going to be no exception on March 8.

It is a pleasure now for me to introduce to you one of the most exciting fighters, his battle in 2011 with James Kirkland was a candidate for Fight of the Year. He is originally from Mexicali, Baja California, fighting now out of Los Angeles, record of 22-2 and 18 KO’s, Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo.

Alfredo Angulo
Hi, guys. I really appreciate everybody being here and I really appreciate the opportunity for this conference call. Thank you so much to SHOWTIME and Golden Boy for this opportunity, it’s very exciting to be on this pay-per-view. Thank you so much for this opportunity, I really appreciate it, and I have been working really hard for this fight and will put on a really great fight for the fans.

R. Schaefer
OK, gracias, Alfredo. We are going to open it now to the media for questions; if you have any questions for Alfredo or for Virgil Hunter, they’re both on the line.

Q
Richard you talked about opportunity for Alfredo, obviously he’s getting some special treatment and respect being on this call by himself, it’s a great opportunity for him, but can you characterize what happens if he wins and what happens if he loses.

R. Schaefer
Well, I think you don’t just get the opportunity, you earn the opportunity, and I think Alfredo has earned that in the way he fought and the way he fights. Boxing has really moved away, I think, particularly in the last couple of years or so, where excitement, win or lose, is being more rewarded than it used to be and fighters don’t really have to go back in the line if they lose in an exciting fashion, and sometimes an exciting loss these days is, frankly, more valuable than a boring win. I will give you an example, like a Rigondeaux, and I don’t mean to knock in any way or shape Rigondeaux, I respect him, I admire his talent, he’s one of the best fighters in my opinion, but crowds like to be entertained, and Alfredo has that style. So I think he has earned this through his hard work and dedication to the sport, and of course a win, nobody wants to lose, but you know, Alfredo is must-see TV, and I don’t think anything changes in that regard.

Now, if you beat somebody like Canelo and you are in the 154-pound weight class, there are of course many big names and opportunities out there, and I don’t need to tell you who the biggest name is, we all know that, that of course is Floyd Mayweather. So I am not going to go and make any statements or promises and so on now, ‘if you win you’re going to get Floyd or so,’ but there are other big names there whether it’s Miguel Cotto or so on, so the door certainly would open and it would lead to mega-fights. I think Alfredo knows that, but Alfredo is a veteran, and he was actually telling me that at the L.A. press conference, he’s not thinking ahead of that. His only task at hand is Canelo Alvarez, and I think Alfredo would be foolish, which I know he is not, to look past Canelo Alvarez. So, his focus is on Canelo and let’s see what happens.

Q
I talked to Andre Ward yesterday and he had some really specific things to say about Angulo’s punch placement and his pursuit, his ability to cut off the ring. He also said that he anticipated sparring with Alfredo for a second time last night. What do you take from Andre’s comments and also did that sparring session take place again last night and what have you gained from it.

A. Angulo
First of all I’m not sure if I’m going to be boxing any more with Andre or not, it’s not up to me, but the times that I did box with him, he’s a very good fighter. He’s got a lot of talent, experience, and he’s got a lot of qualities that are superior to Canelo. So I know that it’s helping me, and to be able to be in that ring with Andre Ward, it’s a plus for me and it’s a positive. I’m very grateful to him for the work, for the nice comments, because he knows how important this fight is to me.

Q
Alfredo, this is a huge opportunity, as Richard has said, and you realize it. What is at stake for you, given the fact that you were chosen over some pretty tough competition for this fight, and are you going to sell out and really just probably fight your best, hardest fight ever?

A. Angulo
Yes, you know, I’m very grateful. I want to thank, once again, Richard Schaefer and the entire team at Golden Boy Promotions for this opportunity, for having the confidence in me so that I can be in this kind of fight. But at the same time I feel that I won my spot, I won my spot through my hard work and my style of fighting. I’ve always given 100 percent up in that ring, and I’ve given it my all, so I kind of feel that I won my spot, and there’s a reason why I’m in this fight. This is a very, very big opportunity for me and I want to take full advantage.

Q
Virgil, you said there have been no injuries, obviously, he suffered an eye injury in the last fight, can you characterize that? And also, what are the benefits that you see in him having sparred with guys like Amir Khan, who’s smaller and quicker, and obviously Andre Ward, who’s bigger and the complete package?

V. Hunter
Just to the injuries on his eye, other than swelling, wasn’t what people assumed it was, and it was unfortunate because the diagnosis that night was done in the ring before he even stepped out, and it wasn’t by a doctor it was speculation by someone else. The injury was definitely an abrasion on the cornea, what the ophthalmologist felt was pretty much like a poke or something like that, and we’ll leave it at that.

The sparring with the different guys is that I never changed his style because that’s him, and I wanted him to naturally gravitate towards other things that would mesh with his style, and by doing that and showing him different looks, different styles of boxing. Then, as he and I talked about when he was training in Los Angeles and pretty much sparring against one type of style, he stays locked in that style, but now because he’s been exposed to different styles, different looks, very fast and quick styles, he’s been picking up and adapting to these things naturally and naturally integrating them into his style without being force fed, without being mind fed. It’s come along naturally through his participation and observation. So that to me was the benefit and the purpose of different looks and styles. But we do also have sparring partners in camp simulating the style of Canelo also.

Q
Alfredo, do you think you can win the fight if it goes the distance, or do you feel you have to stop Canelo in order to get the victory?

A. Angulo
Well, sincerely it’s hard to answer that. I really can’t say. I’m training to win. I’m training to win whatever happens, whether it goes the distance, or if the knockout comes, I’m training to win. So, I can’t really answer that.

Q
Are you driven by your underdog status? You seem to almost be, if you win this it’s definitely kind of a Rocky story come to life. Does that fact drive you at all, or do you just try to keep emotion out of it?

A. Angulo
You know, I really don’t think about that. I really don’t care. I’ve been the underdog most of my career, I’ve gone against the current and I just do my job and I work hard. But I really don’t think about that.

R. Schaefer
I just want to add to that, last I checked his nickname is actually not the underdog, it’s “El Perro,” the dog. He is not the underdog. He is the dog.

Q
Virgil, does Canelo’s power and style concern you at all?

V. Hunter
Of course his style concerns me. Anybody that Alfredo, or any other fighter in the stable, who he goes up against concerns me. He’s a good fighter. He’s proven that. And he’s not anybody to be playing with in the ring, so of course his style concerns me.

Q
At the last fight with Canelo and Floyd you made a comment that you felt that maybe Saul didn’t have enough experience to be able to beat Floyd. In this fight do you feel that you have the experience to beat Saul?

A. Angulo
I’ve been in the ring with good fighters, talented fighters. I also have an extensive amateur background, so I have plenty of experience. But, you know, Canelo’s also been getting better, he’s been getting better and he’s had some good experience in the last few years, so that’s what’s going to make this fight very interesting. It’s going to be an interesting fight, and we’ll see what happens.

Q
There’s obviously other fighters that were being mentioned as possible opponents for Canelo, but for some reason you were chosen. Why do you think you were chosen?

A. Angulo
I think the reason that Canelo decided to fight against me is because he’s a smart fighter and he knows that he wanted to prove to his fans that he’s ready to fight a good fighter, a fighter that’s very strong, and most importantly, a fighter that makes exciting fights. I know that I’ve proven throughout my career that I always give exciting fights, and I think that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to make a good show and we’re going to put on an exciting fight.

Q
Virgil, how difficult is it to train a fighter that’s very, very aggressive and to get him to be disciplined and to have other attributes, possibly defensive attributes?

V. Hunter
Alfredo’s not a difficult fighter to train. The difficult fighter to train is the one who doesn’t want to train, that’s the difficult one. So he’s not a difficult fighter to train. My intention, it’s obvious, is that I don’t teach the style that Alfredo was taught, but I believe that if you’re going to be a good coach that you should subject yourself to the various styles that these champions possess so you can learn. Two years from now I might have another Alfredo and I’ll know even more what to do. Defense is something that I do very well, and within his style we continue to work on this, and I see the improvement daily.

So, it’s a pleasure working with him, and I wouldn’t have it any other way, because he gives it his all, he doesn’t play around, he doesn’t kid around, and any fight that he goes in he’s in that fight. He got an opportunity to win that fight and proved in his last outing (Erislandy Lara) against what some consider the best 154 pounder in the world, and certainly was the best amateur that ever existed, so going into a fight with Alfredo Angulo I’m always going to go in confident because I know he’s always going to have an opportunity to win that fight.

Q
Alfredo, in your last fight against Lara, it was a tough, competitive fight, it was back-and-forth, you knocked him down twice. I’m just curious from your perspective what did you take out of that performance, and do you have any regrets at all about the way that fight ended?

A. Angulo
I learned plenty in that fight. But most importantly I feel that I demonstrated that I can adapt to any style and I can fight pretty much any style boxer. I’m working hard every day with Virgil, I’m learning every day, and that’s the most important thing, that I’m learning and I’m ready to put on a good show, all the time.

Q
Alfredo, since you faced a southpaw last time out and someone that has a Cuban amateur background that Lara has, are you looking forward to facing someone like Saul Alvarez who is the complete style contrast, a guy that will go out there and give you a war?

A. Angulo
You know, basically, I’m happy to fight. That’s my job, I’m supposed to be fighting, and I’m happy to fight, and it’s my job to figure out styles. I’m just glad that I have Virgil on my side to help me construct a game plan and figure out the styles. I am happy that I’m facing another Mexican, because as all the fans know, everybody knows when two Mexicans get in the ring it’s a guaranteed show, it’s a guaranteed exciting show. And March 8, don’t expect anything different.

Q
There’s no title on the line in this fight against Saul Alvarez, but being the fact that he had the biggest fight ever with Mayweather in his last fight do you see this as a title fight, just being on this big grand stage and fighting someone that is well known, like Saul Alvarez?

A. Angulo
You know, I pretty much consider all my fights like world title fights. Yes, I know that in this fight it’s not going to be for a title, but my motivation, my world title is the fans, winning over the fans, making sure that they’re happy with my performance. That’s my motivation, and I consider that kind of like winning a world title if they’re happy.

Q
What do you consider the most dangerous attribute that Canelo has that he’s going to bring to the fight? And how do you classify him, what level do you see him and how do you classify yourself?

A. Angulo
Canelo has gained a lot of experience the last couple of years, but he’s a fighter that has fast hands and he can also box if he wants to, so those are maybe some of the attributes, some of the things that I have to look out for. As far as myself, categorizing myself, I really can’t say. I don’t pay attention to that. All I do is fight, and I let my fighting do the talking for me. Canelo knows that I’m a good fighter, and that’s basically all I can say.

Q
Alfredo, Canelo’s coming off of a loss just like you are. Whose loss was more valuable in experience to the defeated fighter and why?

A. Angulo
Both fights were very, very different. Canelo is coming off a loss to Floyd Mayweather, the pound for pound No. 1 fighter in the world, and in that fight he hardly touched him. My fight, I’m coming off a loss to one of the best fighters in the world, and that is Erislandy Lara, and in a fight that arguably I was winning. It was a very, very entertaining fight, a very exciting fight, and I was possibly winning the fight. So, both fights were very, very different.

Q
Alfredo, have you noticed the recent trend of A-side Golden Boy boxers getting upset by rugged Latino fighters in need of career defining wins; for example, Maidana did it against Broner, Jhonny Gonzalez beat Abner Mares and Victor Ortiz was knocked out by Luis Collazo. What do you think about that?

A. Angulo
Yes, yes, I have noticed. But that’s the beautiful thing about boxing, it goes to show that you can be the best fighter in the world but if you don’t train and you let your guard down, anybody can come and beat you. That’s why you’ve got to be ready at every turn and you have to train hard.

Q
Would you continue this trend, Alfredo, and upset Golden Boy’s Canelo to earn your signature victory? And if you win, what would you like to do next, Floyd Mayweather sweepstakes perhaps?

A. Angulo
God willing, it’s going to be that way. That’s what I want, that’s what I’m working for, and it will happen that way. As far as who I want to fight next, I’m not thinking about that. I’m just thinking about Canelo Alvarez right now, that’s on my mind, and it’s not up to me. It’s up to my team. It’s up to Golden Boy, Richard Schaefer, to decide who I’ll fight next. I’m not worrying about that. The most important thing for me right now is Canelo Alvarez.

Q
You spoke very respectfully of Lara, Alfredo. He beat you and he beat Austin Trout, can he beat Floyd Mayweather? How good is he?

A. Angulo
Well, you know I really can’t say. They both have very similar styles. I think if they ever fought each other, I know for sure it will be a boring fight because all they do is they worry about their defense, or they try to do a lot of defense, or they turn their backs a lot, so I know that for sure. I know that it would be a boring fight if they ever fought each other.

R. Schaefer

2008 Olympic Medalist Yordenis Ugas Comes to Town!

(San Diego, CA) – The table is set for undefeated twenty-five year old San Diego fighter Emmanuel “Renegade” Robles (9-0-1, 3KOs) to take the next step in his and in typical Robles fashion, he is not taking the easy road. Robles will be facing 2008 Olympic bronze medalist and interim WBC 140lb Latino champion Yordenis Ugas (15-1, 7KOs) of Miami, Florida, by way of Santiago, Cuba in the ten round title main event of “San Diego Fights”, the first fight card of the year for California Hall of Fame promoter Bobby D Presents in association with Caribe Promotions on Friday, February 28th, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Mission Valley.

After spending a birthday in Juvenile Hall, Robles knew he had to do something different to get his life back on track. He chose boxing. Asking his mother, a single mother of three boys, for a boxing gym membership for Christmas, Robles jumped into training with both feet and has not let off. With his street fights as experience to draw from, the “Renegade” learned the sport quickly despite starting late but once he met his current trainer, Ernest Johnson Sr, he knew he was on the right track. Together they amassed a respectable amateur record of 35-9 with a 2008 PAL National championship at 141 pounds. Robles also won the 2009 southern California Golden Gloves and the Desert Showdown tournament the same year. In his last hurrah as an amateur, Robles reached the quarter finals in the U.S. Nationals in his final year as an amateur.

As respectable as Robles’ pre-pro debut career was, it does not compare to the resume that the Cuban Ugas put together. A veteran of hundreds of amateur bouts, the twenty-seven year old Ugas is a four-time Cuban national champion who competed i nternationally since 2003 until 2009. Ugas medaled in every important world-class competition in the amateur world, from the World Cup to the Pan-American Games. In Beijing in the summer of ’08, Ugas lost to Daouda Sow in the lightweight division but still took Olympic bronze.

In 2010 Ugas defected from Cuba to join the pro ranks.
Tall and bony with a deceptively languid style, Ugas is known as a sharp, technically accomplished fighter who Dan Rafael of ESPN called a “crowd pleaser”, he went pro in mid-2010 in Georgia with a win over Dino Dmunjic and stringed together an eleven fight win streak including tilts against Kenny Abril and Esteban Almaraz. In March of 2013 he suffered his lone defeat against the undefeated Johnny Garcia via an eight round split decision in Tucson. Despite the loss, Ugas went on winning afterwards with impressive performances against veteran Cosme Rivera and John Williams in his last fight.

Robles, a married father of three, went pro the same year as Ugas but later by a couple of months with a unanimous decision over Luis Sanchez. Robles lined up three more wins, two by knock out. In early 2012, Robles faced fellow San Diegan Adrian Vargas in what is considered one of the best local fights of recent times. The popular Vargas owned a win over Robles in the amateurs but for Emmanuel the four rounder in the pro ranks wasn’t to exact revenge, “I was having trouble getting on fight cards and we knew that Vargas would be a tough fight in which we could showcase our skills. We wanted to show that we have the talent to be a world champion.”

Despite being in his hometown, Robles stepped into hostile territory as the pro-Vargas crowd chanted their favorite fighter’s name throughout the twelve minutes of action. In a classic matchup of boxer vs. brawler, Robles controlled the majority of the action with quick footwork and even quicker hands as Vargas tried to use brute force to impose his will. In the end, the judges saw it a majority draw in a fast placed battle that many saw Robles easily take it.
On the strength of that performance, Bobby D. Presents extended a promotional contract to Robles.
Since then Robles has kept winning with meaningful victories over experienced Jaime Orrantia and Adolfo Landeros as well as being called by current welterweight champion Timothy Bradley and Mexican 2012 Olympian Oscar Molina for sparring in preparation of important bouts.

In his best win to date, Robles suffered early on against hard hitting Joshua Marks but still grinding out an impressive 4th round KO win last April.
Robles recognizes his first opportunity for a title is not an easy won but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Rudd, Petrov, Gonzalez and Carcamo advance in Boxcino opening round

LAUGHLIN, NV (FEBRUARY 21, 2014)–The much anticipated Boxcino 2014 kicked off at the Edgewater Casino with a rousing beginning as Chris Rudd, Petr Petrov, Miguel Gonzalez and Fernando Carcamo all advanced to the semi-final round in the lightweight division on March 28th at the 4 Bears Casino in Newtown, North Dakota.

Chris Rudd opened the tournament with a “Drawbreaker” decision over Yakubu Amidu.

Both guys landed tremendous power shots with Amidu getting better in the second but Rudd came back the next round. In round four it became a war of attrition with Amidu landing with Rudd on the ropes. It was a nip and tuck fight down the stretch and when the scores were announced it was ruled a draw on the scorecards.

The fighters went to the overtime round it was the activity level that got Rudd the victory.

Officially it goes into the record books as a split decision for Rudd by scores of 67-66 twice and 68-65 for Amidu. Rudd, of Covington, Tennessee and he is now 13-1. Amidu of Los Angeles via Ghana is now 19-5-1

Rudd will meet Petr Petrov, who scored a 6-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Fedor Papazov.

It was a close competitive fight with both guys landing hard shots early in the bout. Petrov got the better in round’s five and six as he utilized counter punching ability to land with pinpoint accuracy. He did well despite having some swelling around the right eye.

Petrov of Madrid, Spain via Russia won by scores of 58-56 on all cards and is now 33-4-2. Papazov, of Los Angeles via Russia is now 14-1.

Miguel Gonzalez scored a 6-round split decision over Miguel Angel Mendoza.

Gonzalez boxed very well through the fight and landed some good shots. Mendoza pressed the fight and in round six he had Gonzalez on defensive as he pounded away on him ropes. The crowd tried to urge Mendoza on but it was not enough as Gonzalez took two cards by 58-56 tallies while Mendoza won a card at 58-56.

Gonzalez of Cleveland, Ohio is now 23-3. Mendoza is 21-3-2.

Gonzalez will meet Fernando Carcamo, who destroyed previously undefeated Samuel Neequaye in two rounds.

Carcamo dropped Neequaye in round one and then wobbled and buckled Neequaye for most of the 2nd frame and the fight was stopped as Neequaye was going down to the canvas at 1:58 of round two.

Carcamo is now 16-5 with 11 knockouts. Neequaye of Ghana is now 21-1.

2012 Olympic Bronze Medal winner Taras Shelestyuk battered Francisco Flores as he scored a knockdown en route to a 1st round stoppage in a scheduled 4 round Jr. Middleweight bout.

The time of the stoppage was 1:45 for Shelestyuk, who improves to 7-0.

Cornelius Whitlock needed just 35 seconds to dispose of Luis Hernandez in a scheduled 4 round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Whitlock landed a perfect right hand that knocked Hernandez stiff and the bout was waved off.

Whitlock of Baltimore is now 3-0-2 with 2 knockouts. Hernandez, of San Bernadino, CA is now 2-7.

Despite being knocked down in the 2nd round, James Walos scored a 4-round unanimous decision over Robert Hill.

All three judges ruled 38-37 for Walos, who is now 2-0. Hill is 1-4.

The Boxcino 2014 middleweight tournament kicks off next Friday night at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana at 9pm eastern on ESPN, ESPN Deportes+ and WatchESPN.

Johnson KOs Velazquez in four

glen_johnson
LINCOLN, R.I. (Feb. 21st, 2014) – Boxing’s ageless “Road Warrior” added another highlight-reel knockout to his resume Friday night at Twin River Casino.

Fighting for the first time in Rhode Island, no surprise given his penchant for spanning the globe throughout his career, former two-time world champion Glen Johnson (54-18-2, 37 KOs) stopped the game Jaime Velazquez (11-6-2) in the fourth round of their scheduled eight-round main event light heavyweight bout at “Home Sweet Home,” presented by Classic Entertainment & Sports. Providence’s Toka Kahn-Clary also won in impressive fashion by technical knockout in the scheduled six-round co-feature.

Velazquez, the Pawtucket, R.I., native making his first appearance in 15 years, gave Johnson three strong rounds before the “Road Warrior” poured it on the fourth. Johnson hurt Velazquez early with a body shot and began teeing off as the round wore on, at one point nearly sending Velazquez through the ropes. Velazquez did his best to stay on his feet before a huge overhand right by Johnson sent him teetering into the ropes and prompting Velazquez’s trainer, Roland Estrada, to throw in the towel at the 1 minute, 59 second mark.

Johnson, who rose to fame in 2003 and 2004 when he captured the world light heavyweight title and knocked out Roy Jones Jr., now has 37 wins by knockout.

Fighting in his hometown for the first time since 2012, Kahn-Clary (10-0, 7 KOs) gave his loyal fans of glimpse of what they’ve been missing, dominating the overmatched Carlos Fulgencio (19-13-1) of Miami in just under two rounds.

After spending most of the first round picking his spots, Kahn-Clary turned it on in the second round, sending Fulgencio to the canvas three times in a matter of seconds, forcing referee Ricky Gonzalez to stop the bout at the 1:10 mark. Fulgencio got up quickly from the first two knockdowns, but the third one, courtesy of a hard, right hook from Kahn-Clary, nearly sent Fulgencio through the ropes.

Looking to bounce back from just his second career loss in July, exciting middleweight Thomas Falowo (11-2) took out his frustration on Columbian veteran Jaison Palomeque (14-9-1), earning a bizarre win by disqualification at the 1:57 mark of the third round. Falowo unloaded on Palomeque early with his usual barrage of punches. Palomeque tried to stand toe-to-toe with Falowo and eventually paid the price as Falowo caught him with a short right cross that sent him tumbling to the canvas at the end of the second round.

Falowo had Palomeque hurt against the ropes midway through the third when Palomeque threw a quick kick in an apparent attempt to put some distance between he and Falowo. Referee Joey Lupino stepped in and immediately disqualified Palomeque, giving Falowo his first victory since May.

Making his Rhode Island debut, Louisiana cruiserweight Alvin Varmall Jr. (2-0, 2 KOs) put on quite the show against his taller opponent, Andre Ward (1-2-4) of Washington, D.C., stopping Ward in the closing seconds of the third round. As time began to wind down, Varmall Jr. wobbled Ward with a hard, overhand right and then sent Ward crashing to the canvas with a double left hook combination, ending the fight with just one second remaining in the round.

In a regional battle between two tough middleweights, Providence’s KJ Harrison-Lombardi (5-0-1) remained unbeaten with a 40-36, 40-36, 39-37 win over the gritty Antonio Fernandes (4-15-2) of Brockton, Mass. With most of the action taking place in the center of the ring, Harrison-Lombardi was the aggressor throughout the fight, landing the cleaner, more efficient punches. As always, Fernandes hung in and fought his way off the ropes several times, but Harrison-Lombardi won decisively, his third win since October.

“I’m super excited to bring the IBF title back to Houston. It’s been a long time coming for me and my twin brother Jermell. On March 8, I’m going to give it all I got.

“This is like a regular fight to me. I work hard for every fight. Carlos Molina, he is just the stepping-stone and I just have to get past this obstacle. Once my team gets past this, I feel like we’ll be at the top forever.

“This fight is big. It’s major. I’m 17 -0 right now. I haven’t even clinched 20 fights and I’m fighting for a world title. I feel like an elite fighter. I have an elite team behind me. So, it’s just a matter of time.”

[On working with trainer Ronnie Shields]
“It’s great. I feel like it can’t get any better. Having a team like this led by Ronnie Shields, it doesn’t get any better than this.

“This is like any other fight I’ve ever had. In 2013 none of my opponents had been knocked out. I knocked them out. I face top guys and it’s just another day in the office for me.

“My team gets me ready and it’s not about just me. My team got me prepared and ready with what I can do in the ring. Ronnie Shields has been with top-class athletes in the sport of boxing. I’m the next one.”

[On the work to get to this point in camp]
” We all have one big goal to accomplish. With my team behind me like they’ve been behind me, I couldn’t ask for anything better. Not only my team, but I have the whole city [of Houston] behind me. It’s just in a matter of time. Training with Brian Vera, training with my twin brother, those guys push me to be where I am. I know I have a lot to prove so, on March 8th I’m going to give you all I have and bring that IBF title back to this city.”

RONNIE SHIELDS, Charlo Trainer

[On what he is doing to prepare Jermall Charlo for his upcoming fight]

“We aren’t doing anything different then what we’ve already been doing. The thing about us is, we train hard every day. We don’t skip a beat on anything because on certain fights people might not think what we are doing is that important. Every fight is important. So you have to be ready for every fight. This is what we’ve always trained for.”

[On Jermall’s growth as a fighter]
“At the end of 2012 we were 10-0. So I called Al Haymon and I said ‘Look, you have to sign this kid.’ I said ‘this kid is going to be champion of the world for a very long time. He’s young and he’s strong. He’s got everything that it takes.’ So he said OK. I said we’ve just got to keep him busy. So, seven fights later, seven knockouts, now here it is and he’s fighting for a world title.”

RED HOT IN CLEVELAND: TEMPERS FLARE AT ANGELO SANTANA-HANK LUNDY WEIGH-IN:

CLEVELAND, Ohio (Feb. 20, 2014) – Tempers flared during Thursday’s official weigh-in as main event fighters Angelo “La Cobra” Santana and Hammerin’ Hank Lundy and their camps had to be separated after stepping on the scales for tomorrow/Friday’s ShoBox: The New Generation doubleheader live on SHOWTIME (10:45 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).

Santana, 134 pounds, and Lundy, 135 pounds, were posing for a photo with legendary promoter Don King and former heavyweight world champion Larry Holmes when a brief scuffle broke out between the fighters and their camps. King, Holmes and others were quick to separate the camps and restore order to the proceedings.

The heavy-handed Santana (14-1, 11 KOs), of Miami, Fla., and dangerous, world-ranked Lundy (23-3-1, 11 KOs), of Philadelphia, will square off in an important 10-round lightweight bout from the Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University in Cleveland, Ohio.

In the opening match of the ShoBox telecast, undefeated Amir “Young Master” Imam (12-0, 11 KOs), of Albany, N.Y., will face fellow unbeaten Jared “The Quiet Storm” Robinson (14-0, 6 KOs), of Charlotte, N.C., in a 10-round super lightweight match. Imam tipped the scales at 140 pounds and Robinson measured 139½ pounds during Thursday’s weigh-in.

Tickets to the event – priced at $35, $75, and $125 plus tax and fees – are on sale and can be purchased through the Wolstein Center box office and website www.wolsteincenter.com or by calling Charge-by-Phone 1-877-468-4946. Doors open at 7 p.m., and a full undercard will be presented prior to the televised matches.

Below is what the fighters had to say prior to Thursday’s weigh-in:

SANTANA

“Everything is going according to plan for this fight. It’s been about six months of preparation. The errors I made in my last fight have been fixed. That won’t happen again. I have an opportunity in this fight to erase it all tomorrow night.

“He’s fought a lot of talented fighters but that doesn’t mean I don’t have the talent to fight him and beat him. He hasn’t fought me yet so his wins don’t mean anything.

“I’m prepared for the full 10 rounds. It’s always great to get the KO, and we’ll definitely look for it, but I also like to box. I’m not just a knockout puncher.

“It’s a great opportunity that SHOWTIME is giving me. I’ve prepared for everything so there will be no surprises. The only surprise will be for my opponent.”

LUNDY

“At the end of the day, we all know that I’ve faced the tougher fighters. We all know I have the better record. But it’s that man in me and not my record that you have to beat.

“When I fought Ajose (Olusegun) everybody said he would destroy me. When you doubt the hammer the hammer is always going to come up big.

“You have to respect the man for getting in there. But this man is not even in my class. You have to crawl before you walk and this guy is trying to walk before he crawls.

“I’m top 10 in the world. This guy doesn’t have anything on me.”

IMAM

“Fighting on national television makes me step it up a notch. You have to because everyone is watching.

“Yeah, I have a lot of knockouts on my record, but I’m just looking for a win. If the knockout comes, it comes.

“He hasn’t faced what I’ve faced, sparred what I’ve sparred. He simply doesn’t have the experience that I have. But it doesn’t matter who he’s faced because he hasn’t faced me.

“He’s going to learn from the master on Friday. The fans love me. I’m going to put on a show.

“It makes it sweeter if I get the KO. Everybody says I don’t go deep into fights and don’t get rounds, but it’s not my fault I’m better than them.”

ROBINSON

“We’re not even if you look at our records. If you go a little deeper, his record is not as impressive at face value.

“I’m going to use my speed and boxing skills to take his power away from him. His power won’t be a factor in this fight.

“I’ve faced the better opposition than him. And fighting on ShoBox gives me that extra motivation to overcome anything he throws at me.

“The sky is the limit for me. But I need a win first and I’ll take it from there.”

Main Events Inks Deal with Light Heavyweight Sullivan Barrera

Totowa, NJ – Main Events adds to their impressive stable of light heavyweights (which includes current WBO Light Heavyweight World Champion, Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev, Anatoliy “The Gladiator” Dudchenko, Isaac “Golden Boy” Chilemba, Lionell “Lonnie B” Thompson and Ilshat “The Sheriff” Khusnulgatin) with the signing of undefeated Sullivan Barrera (10-0-0, 6 KOs).

Sullivan said, “I am very happy and very excited. I thank Main Events for the opportunity to let people know who Sullivan Barrera is.” He added, “I feel I am the best in the light heavyweight division, the problem I’ve faced is that I wasn’t given the opportunity to compete. Now that Main Events will give me the opportunity I will be able to show my talent.”

Barrera Signs Main Events Contract
Barrera made his pro debut August 21, 2009 with a first round TKO over Anthony Adorno in Miami, FL after a stunning amateur career where his record was 282-27. He beat Chad Dawson in November of 2000 via points, 21-11 at the World Amateur Tournament and Beibut Shumenov, in April of 2002 via KO in the first round at the Girado Cordova International Tournament. Additionally, Sullivan has four world amateur championships: Venezuela, Central America, Germany and Cuba.

When he knocks his opponent out, it is generally early on in the fight. Of his six pro knockouts, three have come in the first round and three have come in the second round. Sullivan’s six non-knockout wins have all come via unanimous decision.

Barrera is managed by Luis Molina and advised by Egis Klimas who coincidentally manages fellow Main Events’ light heavyweights Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev and Ilshat “The Sheriff” Khusnulgatin.

Molina said, “I think that this is a great opportunity for Sullivan. I know Main Events does right by their boxers. Sullivan is definitely going to have the best platform to make it big in boxing.”

He is trained by Milton Lacroix who said, “Sullivan was always a fighter but even as a veteran he continues to want to learn more, he wants to continue progressing towards his ultimate goal which is to be the best light heavyweight and champion of the world”

His advisor, Egis Klimas, said, “The light heavyweight division is getting to be one of the most interesting in boxing today with Champions like Bernard Hopkins, Beibut Shumenov, Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev. When we started with Sergey in 2009 division was almost dead.” He added, “We have a lot of young talents coming up into the division, young and aggressive fighters. Adding Sullivan Barrera to my list of fighters is great, he was not recognized for some time, just like Sergey Kovalev until we signed him with Main Events.”

Finally, Klimas said, “Sullivan had a very good amateur background, beating Chad Dawson and Beibut Shumenov, it is my pleasure to advise Sullivan and I believe Main Events will do a very good job, as they always do with their fighters. I am looking forward to bringing Sullivan Barrera into the ring soon.”

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva said, “We are very excited to have Barrera on board with us here at Main Events. He has it in him to be an electrifying performer and the sky is the limit.”

Barrera also said, “I am aware that Main Events has signed many good boxers but I am the best and now I will be able to show the world.”

The undefeated Barrera was born in Cuba and now resides in Miami, FL

Remaining tickets for Ring of Gold can be purchased via Cotai Ticketing; prices start at HKD/MOP 80, with ferry and hotel packages also available.

Rounding out the troika of 2012 Olympic gold medalists will be RY?TA MURATA and EGOR MEKHONTSEV, from Japan and Russia, respectively, in separate bouts on the non-televised undercard. It is exceptional for so many Olympic gold medalists to be featured on the same boxing card. The “Ring of Gold” undercard will also feature former world champion and current No. 2-rated contender AKIFUMI “Sugar” SHIMODA of Japan, in a 12-round Word Boxing Organization (WBO) International featherweight title bout against fellow former world champion MARVIN SONSONA of the Philippines, and undefeated Hong Kong super flyweight sensation REX TSO in a 10-round rumble with MAKO MATSUYAMA of Japan, with the World Boxing Council (WBC) Asian super flyweight and the WBO Asia Pacific junior bantamweight titles at stake.

Vazquez (33-3, 13 KOs), of Guadalajara, México, captured the IBF lightweight title in 2010 when he won a 12-round unanimous decision over Jihoon Kim. Since winning the world title, Vazquez has successfully defended it five times during his four-year reign. Vazquez will be facing undefeated top-rated contender Shafikov (33-0-1. 17 KOs), from Chelyabinsk, Russia. A southpaw with an aggressive style, good skills and movement, the former European junior welterweight champion Shafikov has good punching power and is not afraid to use it.

Zou (3-0), from Guizhou, China, and trained by Hall of Famer Freddie Roach, won his professional debut on April 6, 2013, via a dominant four-round unanimous decision over gritty Eleazar Valenzuela. He followed that up with six-round unanimous decision victories over Jesus Ortega and Juan Toscano on July 27 and November 24, respectively, last year, and all at CotaiArena. One of the most popular Olympic athletes in China, Zou was the world’s greatest light flyweight, capturing gold medals in the World Amateur Championships in 2005, 2007 and 2011, along with gold medals in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games. He also owns an Olympic bronze medal from the 2004 games, making him his nation’s first Olympic medallist in boxing as well as its first boxing gold medallist in the World Amateur Championships and the Olympics. He will be graduating to an eight-round bout when he faces Kokietgym (14-3, 10 KOs), of Roi-Et, Thailand. The vastly more experienced Thai enters this fight having won six of his last seven bouts, with two of those victories coming by way of knockout.

Murata (2-0, 2 KOs), from Tokyo, a sensational prospect at 160 pounds, captured the Olympic gold medal in the middleweight division at the 2012 Olympics held in London. It was the first gold medal won by a Japanese boxer since Takao Sakurai in 1964, and also is the first-ever boxing medal in a weight class other than bantamweight or flyweight. The six-foot Murata also became the 100th gold medalist in Japanese Olympic history. He made his pro debut last August, knocking out OPBF middleweight champion Akio Shibata (21-7-1) in the second round. Murata followed up that victory on December 6 with a fourth-round stoppage of David Peterson (13-1). He will be facing battle-tested slugger and one-time world title challenger Carlos Nascimento (28-3, 22 KOs), of Sao Paulo, Brazil, who enters this fight having won 12 of his previous 14 bouts, nine by way of knockout. Their fight is schedule for eight rounds at middleweight.

Mekhontsev (1-0, 1 KO), of Asbest, Russia, won his pro debut on December 4, knocking out Peter Cajigas in the third round. Trained by his father Leonid, Mekhontsev captured the Olympic light heavyweight gold medal at the 2012 summer games and as a heavyweight he won gold at the 2009 World Amateur Championships and the 2010 and 1008 European Amateur Championships. He’ll be battling fellow undefeated prospect Jaritram Atthaporn (3-0, 1 KO), of Bangkok, in a six-round light heavyweight bout.

Shimoda (28-3-2, 12 KOs), of Tokyo, captured the World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight title in 2011, dethroning defending champion Ryol Li Lee via a unanimous decision aided by three knockdowns. Shimoda’s title reign was short-lived, losing his first title defense, to Rico Ramos, six months later. He immediately moved up to featherweight and enters this fight riding a two-year unbeaten streak. Sonsona (17-1-1, 14 KOs), of General Santos City, Philippines, captured the WBO junior bantamweight title in 2009, winning a decisive unanimous decision over defending champion Jose “Carita” Lopez . Sonsona lost the title in his first defense on the scale coming in two pounds over the division limit, against Alejandro Hernandez, though the official decision was a draw. After losing to Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in 2010 a battle for the vacant WBO junior featherweight title, Sonsona returned to the winner’s circle and enters this fight on a two-year winning streak with his last two victories coming by way of knockout.

Tso (8-0, 5 KOs), is the Pride of Hong Kong. This will mark his third time fighting at Cotai Arena where he has begun to develop a very big following. In his last bout, on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Brandon Rios event last November, Tso scored a first-round knockout of Susu Sithjadaeng Tso will be facing Mako Matsuyama (7-7-1, 3 KOs) of Tokyo, who enters this fight having won a unanimous decision victory over Masatoshi Nakamura last November. They will be facing each other in a 10-round bout for Tso’s WBC Asian super flyweight title and the vacant WBO Asia Pacific junior bantamweight title.

The undercard will also feature local favorite, “The Macao Kid” KUOK KUN NG (2-0), from Macao, China, who will be in a six-round super featherweight and a four-round super welterweight bout, respectively.

ESPN ‘FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS’ CO-MAIN EVENT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED MORALES VS. SULEYMANOV MARCH 7 THE PALA CASINO RESORT AND SPA

SAN DIEGO (February 20, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions in association with Greg Cohen Promotions, Antonio Leonard Promotions and All In Entertainment is happy to officially announce the ESPN “Friday Night Fights” co-feature to the main event attraction featuring Rustam Nugaev (26-6-1, 16 KOs) vs. Marvin Quintero (25-4, 21 KOs), taking place at the Pala Casino Spa and Resort in Pala, California on March 7, 2014.

The evening’s co-main event will feature undefeated junior featherweight Roman Morales (17-0, 9 KOs) against Russian born fighter Khabir Suleymanov (16-3, 6 KOs), in a scheduled 10-round bout.

This will be Morales’ second scheduled 10-round affair, the first was back in October of last year against Roberto Castaneda. Morales went the distance in that contest, earning a unanimous decision in the process, so it stands to reason that there should be no issues with his stamina and you could make the argument that he will be more comfortable this time around, opening the door to a fight filled with fireworks.

“I learned a lot about myself last time out and I think it was more important to get the rounds in than it would’ve been to get overaggressive, maybe even reckless. I’m still growing both mentally and physically, but I know I’m getting everything out of each experience. This time out I’ll have a better understanding of what I’m capable of at different points in the fight, I may choose to push the gas at several points. My opponent won’t be comfortable in there, I won’t let him get settled. I can wait for him to make a mistake but I know I can help the issue better this time out,” Morales said.

Promoter Gary Shaw feels Morales has the ability to become a force in the Jr. Featherweight division. A good performance against Suleymanov will get Morales one step closer to a world title opportunity.

“Morales has a great chance to elevate his position in the Jr. Featherweight division,” said Gary Shaw. “I’m expecting a lot of action in this fight because I know both fighters are hungry to prove to the world that they are on the championship level. This is a tough fight for both guys and the winner will certainly move on to bigger and better things.

The rest of the undercard will showcase some of the brightest young up and coming stars in boxing.

Opening up the telecast will be Washington DC’s undefeated welterweight sensation, Dusty Harrision Hernandez (20-0, 11 KOs) as he battles Honolulu Hawaii’s Michael Balasi (10-3, 7 KOs) in an 8-round bout.

Whittier, California’s unbeaten lightweight star, Alejandro Luna (16-0, 12 KOs) will take on Mexico’s Sergio Riviera (18-14-2, 11 KOs) in a 6-round bout.

Chicago’s amateur standouts, Kenneth Sims Jr. and Eduardo Martinez will be making their pro debuts. Sims Jr. will face Arizona, CA’s Cory Muldrew (1-5) in a 4-round light welterweight bout, while Martinez goes up against Mexico’s Juan Urbina (0-1) in a4-round super bantamweight contest.

San Antonio’s super bantamweight phenom, Mario Barrios (2-0, 1 KO) will do battle against Kelly Lionell (0-2) in a 4-round bout.

Vista, California’s, Aaron Garcia (13-3-2, 4 KOs) will challenge Mexico’s Gerardo Zayas (20-22-2, 12 KOs) in a 6-round featherweight bout.

New York’s Mike Faragon (19-0, 9 KOs) will fight an opponent to be announced in a 6-round lightweight bout, as will Santa Barbara’s welterweight Francisco Santana (18-3-1, 8 KOs).

Bouts subject to change

Tickets for the Gary Shaw Productions event, priced at $150, $100, $50 and $25, are on sale now and can be purchased at Pala Resort Casino Box office, at the Pala Privileges Center, or by calling 1-877-WIN-PALA. BOB AJISAFE & DEAN FRANCIS GO HEAD TO HEAD FOR THE VACANT BRITISH TITLE ON MARCH 15, RIVERMEAD, READING

London (20 February) Bob Ajisafe and Dean Francis are set to clash for the vacant British light heavyweight title at Rivermead, Reading, on March 15th, live on Channel 5.

The English light heavyweight champion, Ajisafe, meets the former British, Commonwealth and European champion, Francis, with both men completely focussed on claiming the coveted Lonsdale belt.

Francis boasts 34 wins with 26 knockouts in a 39 fight career to date, which has seen him claim the WBO Inter-Continental, British and European super middleweight titles, along with the English cruiserweight and Commonwealth light heavyweight championships.

The Basingstoke man fondly known as “Star” has experience on his side and is determined to prove he still has what it takes by winning his second British title.

But Ajisafe, known as “Lionheart” will have other ideas.

At 28-years-old he is an English champion having won the belt against the formerly undefeated Travis Dickinson in Sheffield, Ajisafe has also traded leather with world title contender Tony Bellew in a hard fought contest over 12 rounds.

Trained in Sheffield with the Ingles, the Leeds based Ajisafe will be looking to win his first British title and add another Lonsdale belt to the famous St Thomas Gym in Wincobank Sheffield.

Also scheduled to fight on the show is Leon Senior as he faces former Commonwealth middleweight title challenger Tony Hill over 10 rounds. Former British light welterweight champion and European title challenger Lenny Daws will also be in action, along with former Irish lightweight champion Peter McDonagh, Reading’s own Tamuka Mucha, Ricky O’Brien, Thomas Jarvis and Slough’s John Brennan.

San Diego’s Own Emmanuel Robles Faces Yordenis Ugas for Title Belt!

San Diego, CA) – At the beginning of the year, California Boxing Hall of Fame promoter Bobby DePhilippis of Bobby D Presents would have found it hard to believe that he could have topped his last show of 2013 where local Aaron Garcia stopped the rugged Kevin Hoskins before the six round limit. Along with Garcia’s top-notch performance, DePhilippis featured a slew of local talent in front of a sold out crowd at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in San Diego. By the looks of the line-up for the next installment of his “San Diego Fights” live professional boxing series, DePhilippis might have done just that. Set for Friday, February 28th, at the new home for local San Diego boxing, the aforementioned Crowne Plaza, Bobby D. Presents in association with Caribe Promotions have assembled a world-class six bout fight card that is sure to open up the 2014 season with a bang.

In the main event, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Yordenis Ugas (15-1, 7KOs) comes into town to defend his WBC interim Latino jr. welterweight title against San Diego’s own undefeated Emmanuel “Renegade” Robles (9-0-1, 3KOs) in a ten round championship bout. Ugas of Miami, Florida, by way Santiago, Cuba, is a slick boxer who Dan Rafael of ESPN.com named “a crowd pleaser” with his technical but high-pressure boxing style. The southpaw Robles, whose whole career has been campaigned in his hometown of San Diego under the Bobby D Presents banner, is coming off a very successful 2013 where he knocked out the tough Joshua Marks in four rounds in between two lopsided unanimous decision wins over veteran journeyman Adolfo Landeros. With a win against Ugas, Robles would be ranked in the top 15 with the WBC en route to a world title opportunity next year.

In the semi-main event, twenty-year old Tijuana sensation Kenia Enriquez (9-0, 5KOs) makes her U.S. debut in a flyweight six rounder against fellow unbeaten Noemi Bosques (4-0-2, 1KO). Both named as top prospects to watch in 2013 by the respected female website WBAN, the popular and charismatic Enriquez is currently ranked as the #9 112-pounder by the WBC while Bosques of Puerto Rican descent is a fan-favorite in her hometown of Tampa, Florida. The bout will mark the second of the year for each with Enriquez stopping Los Mochis’ 2013 fighter of the year Selene Lopez in the first round last month while Bosques went four tough rounds against Marisol Miranda just two weeks ago in Florida. They fought to a controversial draw which originally was announced as a split decision for Bosques. Many female boxing experts feel that the classic Mexico vs Puerto Rico match up has all the marking for an early fight of the year candidate.

In a special attraction ten-rounder, Cuban KO artist Yunier Dorticos (15-0, 15KOs) will face fellow hard hitter Hamilton Ventura (13-0-1, 11KOs) of Brazil for the cruiserweight WBA Fedelatin title over a scheduled ten rounds. Nobody believes the face-off will go the distance as no opponent has gone more than six rounds with Dorticos while Ventura, who lives in Los Angeles, has stopped all his opponents by the fourth round except for two. In this fight, somebody’s ‘0″ will definitely go.

WBC #9 ranked flyweight Kenia Enriquez (9-0, 5KOs) of Tijuana will make her U.S. debut in the first Bobby D Presents fight card of 2014. Photo Credit: BoxeoTijuana.com

Also featured on the card will be local favorites featherweight “Tiger” Smalls (2-0-1), super middleweight Uises Sierra (4-0-1, 3KOs) and from Los Angeles Joet Gonzalez (5-0, 1KO).

“San Diego Fights” is brought to you by the Mossy Automotive Group, Filippi’s Pizza Grotto, DGS General Construction and Everlast. The main event is presented by Car Czar. The Crowne Plaza Hotel is located at 2270 Hotel Circle North in San Diego. Doors open at 6:30pm with the first punch thrown at 7:30pm. Tickets and info available at SanDiegoFights.com or by calling (619) 420.8866.

Andrzej Wawrczyk to take on Francois Botha on March 15th in Poland

Francois Botha (48-10-3, 29 KOs) may be 45 years old but there is no way of stopping the “White Buffalo” from roaming the prairie. On March 15th the multiple time world title challenger is coming to Arlamow, Poland, to take on Andrzej Wawrczyk (28-1, 14 KOs).

Botha has been in the ring with some all-time greats such as Mike Tyson (1999 in Las Vegas), Lennox Lewis (2000 in London), Wladimir Klitschko (2002 in Stuttgart) and Evander Holyfield (2010 in Las Vegas).

“I am looking forward to coming to beautiful Poland”, said the “White Buffalo” after signing the bout agreement on Thursday. The show on March 15th will be co-promoted by Ulrich KnockOut Promotions in association with Babilon Promotion and broadcasted live on Polsat.
