Soukhamthath, Moy lock horns jan. 24 at CES MMA XXI in long-awaited bantamweight bout

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 13th, 2014) — Andre Soukhamthath might be the first out-of-towner in CES history with a bigger cheering section than everyone else on the show.

Then again, Soukhamthath (7-1, 4 KOs), “The Asian Sensation” originally born in raised in Woonsocket, R.I., isn’t your average out-of-towner. The 5-foot-9 bantamweight will return home Friday, Jan. 24, 2014 for the first time since he and his family relocated to Boca Raton, Fla., in December to train exclusively with the famed Blackzilians. This “homecoming” of sorts might be Soukhamthath’s toughest fight to date as he faces undefeated Cambridge, Mass., prospect Kin “Kong” Moy (5-0, 1 KO) on the undercard of “CES MMA XXI” at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.

“I’ve seen him through the years,” Soukhamthath said. “I don’t think he’s a better athlete than me, and that is where my advantage will be.”

The showdown against Moy will test Soukhamthath’s mettle both in and outside the cage; not only is he preparing for the fight itself, he’s also trying to balance his preparation with family life as he returns to Rhode Island today to finish training camp, no doubt having to fulfill obligations from friends and family who will want to spend time with him before he returns to Florida in two weeks.

“I’m here to fight, though,” Soukhamthath said, “and I think my fans will understand that.

“They know I can’t go out and party and mess around. They’re just waiting to see my fight. Then we’ll party afterward.”

It’s a lot to juggle for a 25-year-old fighter with both a family and career to consider, but it’s a risk worth taking given the level of training at the Blackzilians’ facility in Boca Raton. The Florida-based team is known for working with former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) world champions Vitor Belfort and Rashad Evans, along with pro boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux.

“Just by working with guys who are on another level, I feel like I’m improving everyday,” Soukhamthath said. “It took a couple of weeks to get settled, but now everyone’s real comfortable. Seeing that sunlight every morning is real motivating.

“The mindset is different down here,” he continued. “That’s mainly I made the move. Here, their job is to fight. They’re in the gym seven days a week. If I have a fight coming up, I know I will have training partners to work with rather than having to look for work. When it’s a wrestling day, everyone is there for wrestling. When it’s a sparring day, everyone’s there for sparring. And there are no egos. Everyone is there to work.”

Will the new regimen be enough to stop Moy? Within the past year, Moy has won three pro bouts, including a big win over fan-favorite Dinis Paiva at CES MMA’s “Path Of Destruction” show in April. He also submitted Kurt Chase-Patrick in just under a minute in September and closed out 2013 with a bare-knuckle boxing win over Texas pro boxer Marc Antonio Torres in New Hampshire, winning the five-round fight by unanimous decision. Torres had only three pro bouts under his belt, but more than 100 amateur fights.

“That fight gave me a lot of confidence,” Moy said. “Fighting a guy who was a real dangerous striker who had so much amateur experience and being able to stand in front of him gives me a boost knowing what Andre will bring to the table.

“He has great standup,” Moy said of Soukhamthath, “but his wrestling is really underrated.”

To prepare for what will also be his toughest test, Moy is working with several different training partners at Redline MMA, anyone who can duplicate Souhamthath’s skill set, style and cadence.

“I have a really good camp behind me,” Moy said. “Pedro Gonzalez, Soap Am, Matt Doherty, they’ve all helped me push myself to the next level, Pedro especially, with him being taller and having a similar body type to Andre. I’ve been trying my best to replicate that, so I have to take pieces from different training partners.”

At first, Moy was hesitant to take the fight given his respect for Soukhamthath and the fact both are Asian-American fighters working together to establish more diversity within the MMA community, both locally and worldwide.

“Surprisingly, there aren’t a lot of Asian-American representatives,” Moy said, “and I admire how well Andre fights and how he carries that with pride, but, at the end of the day, I think he’s the best 135-pounder around, and I want to fight the best.”

“Anytime you win, you’re taking another step forward,” Soukhamthath added. “This is another big fight. I’ve know [Moy] for a while and I consider him a friend, but now we’re fighting, and I take that personal, so we’re not friends. When you fight me, you’re messing with my money. I’m going to bring it, and I hope he brings it, too.”

“CES MMA XXI” also features the return of fan-favorites Todd “The Hulk” Chattelle (12-9, 9 KOs) of Pawtucket, R.I., and CES MMA featherweight champion Rob Font (8-1, 2 KOs) of Boston. Font will face Ahsan Abdullah (5-4, 2 KOs) of Binghamton, N.Y., in a three-round bout as he aims for his eight consecutive win and fifth overall under the promotional guidance of CES. Chattelle is hoping for a fresh start in 2014 against the always dangerous Shedrick Goodridge (4-6, 2 KOs) of Rahway, N.J.

Also returning to Twin River is Melrose, Mass., heavyweight John Johnston (4-0, 4 KOs), who will attempt to keep his impressive streak of consecutive knockout wins (4) alive when he faces unbeaten William Baptiste (2-0, 1 KO) of Goldsboro, N.C.

Paiva (3-5), an East Providence, R.I., native, will look to snap his two-fight losing streak in a bantamweight bout against Franklin Isabel (4-6) of Chelsea, Mass.; while fellow bantamweight Shaun Marmas (5-5, 1 KO) Doherty (2-0, 2 KOs), a Salem, Mass., native, in a potential Fight of the Night candidate. Marmas split two bouts in 2013, beating Tom Evans in April and losing to Abdullah in June.

Exciting prospect Willie Brown Jr. (2-0) of Meriden, Conn., will look to keep his perfect record intact in his first bout of the year against lightweight Kevin Haley (2-0, 1 KO) of Dover, N.H., and featherweight Kyle Bochniak of Winthrop, Mass., will make his professional debut in a separate three-round bout against Anthony Loycano (1-3) of North Andover, Mass. Middleweight Adam Quitt (1-3) of Framingham, Mass., will return for his first fight since February when he battles Rocky Hill, Conn., veteran Sylvester Murataj (0-2). All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets for “CES MMA XXI” are priced at $40, $55, $100 and $125 (VIP) and can be purchased by calling 401-724-2253/2254, online at www.cesmma.com or www.ticketmaster.com or at the Twin River Players Club.

Cohen Congratulates Kayode for Second Win as Heavyweight

WinsKayode150
Promoter Greg Cohen wishes to congratulate his heavyweight, undefeated Lateef “Power” Kayode (20-0, 16 KOs), for his sixth-round TKO over Jonte Willis on Friday night, January 10, at “Battle at the Boat 94” at the Emerald Queen Hotel & Casino in Tacoma, Washington.

Fighting in front of a standing-rooom-only crowd, as well as a worldwide audience watching on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Kayode finally secured the referee’s stoppage at 1:07 of the fight’s scheduled final round.

Cohen says Kayode’s second fight as a heavyweight went according to plan, as the tough Willis was able to go some rounds before succumbing to the Nigerian Kayode’s well-documented power.

“We knew Willis would be durable, he’s been in with several big punchers and gone the distance,” said Cohen. “Lateef did a good job softening him up and ultimately getting him out of there quicker than anyone ever has. I was very pleased with Lateef’s performance.”

Cohen says the show was a tremendous success in every way and he wishes to thank his promotional partners, Brian Halquist Productions, GH3 Promotions and DiBella Entertainment for their support.

“That was a terrific venue and the people we worked with couldn’t have been better. GCP hopes to be back there soon with another world-class event.”

LAMONT PETERSON, DIERRY JEAN, JERMELL CHARLO AND GABRIEL ROSADO MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Lamont_Peterson
Kelly Swanson
This is a special delight because it’s the first conference call of the New Year, and we’re excited today to talk about the first Golden Boy Promotions show on SHOWTIME of the year, which will take place Saturday, January 25 at the DC Armory in Washington D.C., a big show with Lamont Peterson and Dierry Jean and also with Jermell Charlo and Gabriel Rosado. We have all four guys available today to talk to you, but we will first start with Jermell and Gabe. And in order to make the proper introductions and talk a little bit more about the show I’d like to introduce Richard Schaefer, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Boy Promotions. Richard?

Richard Schaefer
Thank you, Kelly, and welcome to all the media members to the first Golden Boy call of the year. Happy New Year to all of you and your families, much health and happiness, and I’m excited to work with all of you in 2014, another sensational year for the sport.

What we’ve done in 2013, particularly is two things, we put together evenly matched fights, fights where you don’t know who is going to win, and we put those into places, into venues and cities where they belong, and I think the results were outstanding. I think it was easily the best year in boxing for boxing in many years.

And one big thank you goes to the fighters. They have agreed to fight each other in competitive match ups, and that’s exactly where this card here on January 25 fits in. It’s at the right place in D.C., the Armory in Washington D.C. Washington fight fans are great fight fans. They will come out in large numbers. We already have sold a lot of tickets. So I do anticipate a sell out in Washington on Saturday, January the 25th.

Tickets are still available at $25, $50, $75, $150 and $250. So yes, you heard right, 25 bucks to see this amazing card, which again is SHOWTIME televised fights and the fights which will be televised on Showtime Extreme starting at 7 p.m. Eastern/Pacific. There will be some great undercard fights there like Anthony Peterson will be on there as well, Raynell Williams, Dominic Wade, Rau’Shee Warren, Robert Easter, Jamel Herring. So it’s going to be a great lineup of exciting fights and fighters.

A big thank you to Showtime for agreeing to televise this first card of the year. It’s going to be the first Showtime card as well, and I know it is the first of many, since I am actively discussing with Showtime some future exciting programming. So let’s kick it off here with a fight between two very, very exciting fighters, Jermell Charlo versus Gabriel Rosado.

Gabriel Rosado, “King” Gabriel Rosado with the record of 21-7-13 KOs. He’s certainly one of the entertainers in the sport, always comes to fight, a veteran of nearly eight years on the program, has wins over people like Jesus Soto Karass, Sechew Powell, Kassim Ouma, Charles Whitaker, has been in the ring with Golovkin and Angulo, J’Leon Love, and others, and in his last fight was an incredible effort against Peter Quillin.

I think it was a very close fight. Some people felt that he won the fight. It was certainly a very, very close fight, and it showed that Gabriel really wanted this and he belongs right there at the top, at the top of the Junior Middleweight Division. So on January the 25th he’ll return to the Junior Middleweight Division to 154 pounds, and he is on the road to show that he wants to get another world title opportunity in the near future.

I’m going to hand it over to Gabe now to make some comments, how his camp is going and please welcome “King” Gabriel Rosado.

Gabriel Rosado
Hey, thank you Richard. I’m having a great training camp. I just got to Puerto Rico on Monday for the second part of my training camp, and I’m training in Caguas right now, and I just have great sparring out here and the weather’s great so it’s helping me get down in weight.

I’m just excited for this opportunity at 154 to make a statement. I kind of have unfinished business in this weight class, giving up my number one ranking when I went up to fight Triple G. So I’m just excited to go back down at 154. I think I’m going to be bigger and stronger, and I’m just ready for it.

R. Schaefer
Thank you, Gabe. The man he is going to be facing is somebody who has over the last couple of years made a lot of noise in the pros. He has a very stellar amateur background clearly for an amateur start, 23 years young, 22-0 with 11 knockouts. He’s coming from the great fighting state of Texas, Houston, Texas.

He had an active 2013 where he won three times, defeating Harry Joe Yorgey, Demetrius Hopkins and Jose Angel Rodriguez. So on January the 25th he will put his undefeated record on the line in clearly the biggest and most dangerous fight of his career against Gabriel Rosado. He obviously hopes to make a statement here to the boxing world that he is going to be in line and ready for the world title shot as well.

Please welcome now Jermell “Ironman” Charlo.

Jermell Charlo
I appreciate that, Richard. I’m going to jump right into this. This is a great opportunity for me and Gabe. It’s a good fight. It was well matched, and I appreciate Golden Boy for putting this fight on. This is my time. It’s my season, and in order for me to do what I have to do and make noise or just period be the fighter that I need to be in boxing, I need to stand up and step out and this is what this fight’s going to do for me.

I’m ready at 154. This has been my weight. I’m going to own it. I’m claiming it now. So I appreciate Gabe for coming down from 160. Hopefully he makes weight on time and he makes weight good, that we get this ball rolling.

R. Schaefer
Thank you very much to Gabe and to Jermell. We’re going to open it up now to the media for questions.

Q
Hey, Gabe, how you doing? Since this is your fourth straight fight on premium television, what do you think makes you so attractive to be on TV so much?

G. Rosado
I think that boxing is a sport but it’s also entertainment, and at the end of the day it’s about being an entertainer and I think the type of fights that I bring to the table are entertaining to the fans. You see knockdowns. You see blood. You see controversy, of course in my last two fights.

I think the fans are just-they respond to the controversy and they voice their opinion. I think Gordon Blake acknowledges that and Showtime. When you’re putting it all on the table and you’re just fighting, I think that’s what people want to see. So I think that’s why I’m back on Showtime. I appreciate it, the opportunity that Showtime and Golden Boy’s given me to be back on Showtime again.

Q
And how much have you benefited from being on TV?

G. Rosado
A lot, man. The love and the support is great. People are knowing me everywhere I go and things like that. So a lot of times when I run into people a lot of people feel like I’m kind of like the modern day Gatti in a way. It’s exciting. I’m having a good time right now.

Even though in 2013 I officially didn’t have a win, it kind of was a good year for me in a way. I took the positive out of it. Even though I didn’t get to win a fight I took the positive out of it, and it’s 2014 so I feel like this is a fresh start for me as a new weight class. So I know what I got to do in this fight. It’s no secret. I have to knock Charlo out, and this is going to happen.

Q
Thank you. Hello, everybody. My first question for you is for Gabe. Gabe, because you’re coming back down to junior middleweight for this fight after the fights you’ve had recently in middleweight, looking back do you at all regret the fact that you did give up that mandatory position to go and fight Golovkin, which then you had those other fights that didn’t go your way in the middleweight division or are you happy you made the move and now you’re comfortable coming back down?

G. Rosado
It’s funny how things play out. I think everything happens for a reason. I really don’t regret going up and giving up my number one spot in the IBF. I think when I went to middleweight to fight Triple G I wasn’t naturally a middleweight. I think I was still a small guy, and then I kind of grew into the middleweight division once I fought Kid Chocolate and I felt real comfortable at middleweight. But I could still make junior middleweight. I’m a big guy, but I could still make junior middleweight.

So I don’t regret it, man. I think everything happens for a reason. Like I said, even though I didn’t get a win on my record for 2013, I won the fans over and the fans got my back and I’m getting a lot of support and they’re backing me up. So in a way it was a great year, and I just plan on 2014, I just plan to being a world champion in 2014.

Q
My other question for you, Gabe, is about the cuts that you’ve suffered, the fight with Quillin ended on a cut and the Golovkin fight ended because of a cut. I don’t know if they were the exact same place, but they seemed to me that they were in similar areas. Can you tell me; first of all, were they in the same basic spot where the two cuts occurred? And secondly, because they seemed to cut fairly easily are you at all concerned that even though you can hang with these guys, obviously, that’s going to be become a problem, that’s not going to let you get to those goals because your skin is just not going to hold up for you?

G. Rosado
It’s a different cut. It wasn’t the same cut from the Triple G fight. And in the Triple G fight I felt that those cuts were a lot worse than the Kid Chocolate fight. I felt that the cuts early in the Triple G fight made it difficult for me to fight, but I just felt that the stoppage with Kid Chocolate was a premature stoppage. I felt that I was the one coming on. I had some momentum. I was applying the pressure. I felt that I could’ve knocked Kid out in that round or in the next round.

So I just felt like it was something-cuts are a part of the game. It’s a part of boxing. Miguel Cotto, he’s been cut multiple times. Manny Pacquiao’s been cut multiple times. You got guys like Marquez. In the last card on Showtime, I believe it was the last card; all the guys got cut. Alexander got cut. Cotto got cut. You just go on and on. So it’s a part of boxing. I think a fight needs to be stopped when it’s affecting a fighter. When a fighter’s taking punishment from a cut, I think that’s when it should be stopped. So I felt that my stoppage was just premature. I’m not focusing on that, because when you focus on something like that it becomes a problem. I’m not thinking about it. I’m going into this fight with a lot of confidence. I went to a surgeon to get my eye checked, and he looked at it and he said it’s healing really great and everything should be great. So right now it’s not in my head.

Q
Okay, thank you for that, Gabe. I have two questions for Jermell. You mentioned in your opening comments this is obviously an important fight for you, your first time being on a main Showtime card, taking on an experienced veteran opponent who’s fought for world titles in the past. Do you feel like-you are undefeated, you are considered one of the prospects, rising contenders, however you want to phrase it, in the division, but do you view beating an opponent like Gabe Rosado, who has had experience, as the last hurdle you need to clear before you can get a potential world championship fight?

J. Charlo
Yes, absolutely. Defeating Gabriel Rosado will be, I want to say, the ladder that you finish climbing. I want to get to that point where you compare me to the greats and you compare me to the best in the weight division.

Right now with this fight in place this is, like I said earlier, my time and timing is everything. I want to say would’ve, could’ve, should’ve, that’s for the birds. Everything that could’ve happened before, I’m a different fighter. I’m thorough.

I’m going to come through this fight. I’m going to make it happen. We’ve got multiple game plans. We can handle adversity. We just haven’t been able to show much in these last recent fights because the fights is only been to where it’s been. So I’m here to get it on and do what I do best and that’s win.

Q
Regarding getting the cuts that Gabe suffered that ended two of his last three fights, is that something that you talk about in camp, that you may target that eye because it seemed a little soft in those two fights and it did cut open somewhat easily even though Gabe talked about how he felt it wasn’t that bad in the last fight?

J. Charlo
I’m hitting everything. I’m not focused on just hitting just the eye. We come to destroy. It’s not about hitting an eye and busting an eye open. We come to demolish.

Q
My first question is for you, Gabe. Could you talk a little bit more about the dropping of your weight, because you did say, I think, after the last weigh-in for the Quillin fight that you were done at 154? Could you talk about, and Jermell asked if you were going to make the weight comfortably-could you elaborate on why you feel comfortable coming back down in weight?

G. Rosado
Well, I talked about coming down to 154 thinking that I would beat Kid Chocolate, and which I felt like I was leading to that, but it’s all about opportunities and situations. Obviously I didn’t get the call for Kid Chocolate. So now I’m just in a situation where I was just waiting for an opportunity to come my way, and 154, I look at this as a great opportunity being so many names in the weight class, Angulo, Canelo, Lara, Trout. You name it. It’s a lot of talent in the division. So I just looked at it like an opportunity.

I don’t know what’s going on right now as far as the titles that Charlo’s holding on to because he has a WBC Americas and then he has the USBA, and the USBA didn’t approve me, which to me was a joke and then now we’re waiting on the WBC. My thing was I’m dropping to 154 thinking this is a championship fight. When I signed the contract I signed the contract for a 12-round fight.

So I don’t know what’s going on right now. The USBA didn’t approve of me because I’m not coming off a win, but the main event, no disrespect to Lamont Peterson, it was Lamont Peterson who lost that fight, and even though it was at a catchweight he still lost, but he gets to defend his world title and I don’t get a shot to get in the rankings. So I just don’t understand that.
NOTE: Charlo vs. Rosado is now a 10-round fight for the WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight Title.

Q
Richard, can you elaborate on that, what this win could do for Gabriel given the fact that he’s been in so many high profile, exciting fights?

R. Schaefer
Well, I would certainly think that the winner of this fight has a strong case and a strong possibility to fight for one of the world titles. The fact is that we are promoting most of the world champions at 154 within Golden Boy. So I think the winner of this fight definitely has a shot at one of the world titles. That’s the idea.

So there is much, much at stake. Both fighters know that, and I think that is one of the reasons why Gabriel Rosado decided to move down to 154 as well. And as I said in my opening remarks, he is returning to the 154 pound obviously with the idea to take another world title opportunity. That’s the whole idea here. And that’s going to be up to me to secure that, and I feel confident that I can and I will.

The same is true for Charlo, for Jermell; that he knows that he has diligently worked towards that title opportunity. There is this one big hurdle ahead of him, in front of him. His name is Gabriel Rosado, but he knows that if he is able to beat Gabriel Rosado that he is in line for a world title shot. So there’s no question about that, and I think that’s one of the reasons why this makes this fight so intriguing.

Q
Jermell, when you hear Richard, it’s one thing to know that but to hear him say that right now, what does that mean to you, that this win right here could put you right there on the doorstep to be with those other guys that have been fighting for those titles?

J. Charlo
It’s a great thing, but I believe in one man and he works through R. Schaefer to put me in a fight that I need to be in. So as of right now, my focus in on January 25th, this win, and go from there.

Q
My last question for you, how does Gabriel stack up against the guys that you’ve faced? Obviously he’s been in some big fights, but he’s very resourceful and he was in all three of his last three fights. Is he the toughest guy you’ve faced? Is he possibly the most resourceful? Kind of characterize the challenge that’s in front of you.

J. Charlo
That’s a question I’ll have to answer after the fight. I don’t know if he’s the toughest guy I’ve faced. With his resume and his background he has put up something. He has put up and shut up a little bit. So right now I can’t just say, “He’s the toughest guy,” but I know comparing him to the other fighters that I’ve fought I know that this is a fight that I have to be on all Ps and Qs and be triple eight. So that’s it.

Q
This question is for Gabriel. Can you please explain the reason why you decided to do the second part of training in Puerto Rico? Have you done it before? Will you continue to do it in the future?

G. Rosado
I’ve done training camps in various places like Phoenix, New Mexico, Florida. The plan on going to Puerto Rico and training in Caguas is because in Philadelphia we got hit with a major snow storm, which was making it difficult for me to do road work and things like that. The temperature just dropped extremely low. It was like ten degrees. So I just needed to go somewhere where the climate was hotter and where I was able to focus a lot better.

So we came to Puerto Rico and everything’s great. Within the couple of days that I’ve been here I’ve already dropped six pounds. So the weight’s coming off quick, and there’s a lot of great talent in the gym. I’m getting great sparring. So it’s just kind of like just a boost. It’s playing out great, and I’m having a great camp out here.

Q
Now you spoke about staying at 154. What do you see in your immediate future after this fight?

G. Rosado
This is a fight that I’m looking at that I have to really be impressive, make a statement and go for the knockout. The old timers say, “Don’t ever go for the knockout,” and I understand that, but I think when you look at my last two fights I pretty much had no choice but to go for a knockout. This is not a fight where I can go there and be confident in boxing or doing things that I could do. I just got to be a killer. I got to be a beast. I got to go for the kill.

I’m not happy with my last two fights, as far as the outcome of them, so I’m kind of going to take it all out on Charlo on the 25th. I’m on a mission to knock him out. That’s my mission. That’s all that’s on my mind. There’s no game plan. There’s no nothing. It’s just go in there and knock him out. That’s my attitude. And from there, I plan on hopefully getting a fight with either Lara or Canelo. I would love to fight either of those guys.

Q
Okay. And, Jermell, how are you? Thank you for this opportunity. Gabe is mentioning that he wants to win by knockout. How do you respond to that?

J. Charlo
Just go and knock him out. He can’t knock me out. I’m going to do what I got to do in the ring, and that’s all I’m going to say. I’m not going to do all the little trash talking, like the little Twitter trash talking. I’m training right now. I’ve been training for about a week and a half and I’m ready to fight. I’ve been ready to fight.

Q
One question for both of you guys, since this will be the first fight of 2014 for you guys, how aggressive are you going to be this year to get the world title shot that you both deserve, that you feel that you deserve?

G. Rosado
I’m going to be extremely aggressive in this fight, and I’m going to be smart. It’s not going to be reckless pressure. It’s not going to be taking four shots and laying one type of pressure. It’s going to be smart pressure. Charlo says that he can face adversity, but you really can’t say that when you haven’t been there. It’s a whole different story when you’re in a fight and you’re cut and you have to fight through a cut and you’ve been down and you got to get up and fight through it. He hasn’t been through that. He really doesn’t know what he’s talking about, and by him saying that is-

J. Charlo
I’ve been through a whole fight with my eye completely shut. There’s no way you could say that.

G. Rosado
I’ll test Charlo, and we’ll see if Charlo’s really built for that. But he’s saying that he can go through adversity, but he really don’t know that. He’ll find that out himself on the 25th. He’s not sure of it. He’ll find out. Just like everybody else is going to find out, he’ll find out the 25th if he’s really built for that.

So he really is not sure of it. He can say he is, but you can’t say you could do something when you’ve really never been through it. So he has to experience it first before he can say he’s going to face adversity on the 25th.

Q
Charlo, for you a spin off of the same question, the talent level Gabriel fought his last three fights with were three undefeated fighters, world champion fighters. How aggressive are you going to be, since the talent that you-you’ve fought some good fights, but coming into this fight you haven’t fought the title fights that Gabriel has fought. So its 2014 and this fight in the ring on January 25th, how about that fight for you?

J. Charlo
I’m going to be aggressive of course. That’s the thing. You never go into a fight not being aggressive. You come to kill. That’s what every boxer should want to do, but I’m going to outsmart him. My skills are way better than his. So I’m going to beat him at whatever he’s trying to do. So if he’s trying to come in aggressive, I’m going to beat him at being aggressive. I’m going to take his game plan away from him, and that’s what’s going to make me victorious on the 25th.

Gabe talked about me not being tested, it’s just obvious. It’s obvious that he gets cuts and he bleeds and all of that. He don’t know what I went through and he don’t know the issues and the situations that other fighters went through when they was fighting. Everybody has problems. You don’t know until somebody goes out and lashes out and say it or complains about it. That’s when you actually say, “Oh, this was the issue.” You don’t what adversity they fought through.

So just to put that out there, I had surgery on my eyes in March and fought in June. Who says that I complained and said, “Oh, this was an issue.” No, bro, I fought through that, and that’s when I fought Demetrius Hopkins and that’s the same fight that you’re studying. So you’re studying the wrong game plan anyways.

R. Schaefer
All right, I’d like to thank both Gabe Rosado and Jermell Charlo for being available on this call. I know they’re in the middle of their training and training camps. I think one thing which came clearly across in this call is how excited and fired up these two guys are. It’s going to come down to desire and will to win. Both of them, I think, demonstrated very well on this call today what this fight means for them and to them. I can’t wait to watch this fight and good luck to both guys.

R. Schaefer
Thank you. Well, talking about will and desire and entertaining, I this next fight, the main event of that Showtime doubleheader, the Junior Welterweight World Championship between World Champion Lamont Peterson and Dierry Jean, I think, has a bit of all of that sprinkled in as well.

With Dierry Jean we have an undefeated fighter with 25-0, with 17 knockouts. He is an exciting fighter, a smart fighter, a very dangerous fighter and certainly is not one, as we often see of these mandatories, which somehow have become mandatories and people have to scratch their head, “How does this guy deserve to be a mandatory to a world title?” Dierry Jean is certainly one of the best junior welterweights out there, and just because maybe he’s not that well known here in the United States doesn’t mean he doesn’t belong there.

He’s a native of Haiti, who moved with his family to Montreal and Quebec in Canada as a child. He is obviously ranked the number one and is the mandatory for the world title. He’s probably representing his adopted home country of Canada. Winning a national amateur championship before turning pro back in 2006, he has been waiting for this world title shot. I know he will be ready, and I’d like to introduce to you now Dierry Jean.

Dierry Jean
Hello. How is everyone? My training camp is very good, so far so good. We’re in the best shape of my life. We’re going to go out there to do the job. Our mission is to go out there and win the belt.

R. Schaefer
Thank you, Dierry. Now Lamont Peterson is certainly a fighter who always comes to entertain, who always comes to fight, will to win, I think, is right there next to his name. He is an exciting fighter and has a lot of fans, has a big fan base in Washington D.C. as well. We saw that when he fought Amir Kahn back in December 2011, which was a great night of boxing in Washington D.C., and for him to be fighting in front of his home crowd I think is just added incentive.

We all know he got caught in his last fight when he fought Lucas Matthysse back in May 2013, but real champions, big champions, real fighters, they come back from this and they are ready, and I know that Peterson is ready. He has a great team with Barry Hunter and everyone behind him. I think he’s going to show the world what he is all about and that the May fight with Matthysse was what I just said, he got caught and that happens and that happens to the best. He is very charismatic and always fun to watch. So I can’t wait for this fight as well, for the Junior Welterweight World Championship, and it’s a pleasure for me now to introduce to you the World Champion, Lamont Peterson.

Lamont Peterson
Hey, how everybody doing? Pretty much don’t have to say much about my background or how I train. Everybody know I come to fight. I come in shape, and I’m just looking forward to January 25th.

Q
Thank you, hello, everybody, once again, my first question is for Dierry. It’s good to talk to you. My question for you is you got this title shot by scoring a pretty big knockout against Pendarvis in your eliminator, and now you’ve come into this fight against an opponent in Lamont who got knocked out in his last fight even though it wasn’t a world title fight. Do you feel like the best case of action for you is to sort of try to jump on him to make him remember the way it was when he fighting Matthysse in his last fight?

D. Jean
Yes, it’s a great opportunity for me because I think in his mind he’s not 100% okay. So it’s going to be a great opportunity for me to strike him again, for me to catch him again, to remind him the nightmare he took last time.

Q
And can you also talk a little bit about your boxing background? Richard mentioned in his introductory remarks you came from Haiti. I don’t know how old you were when you moved from Haiti to Canada, but what was it like for you growing up there and how did you get involved in boxing?

D. Jean
I came at like ten years old with my big brother. We grew up there. I started boxing at 18 years old, with an ex-boxer who brought me there, and then since that day I’m still boxing. I dreamed that I was a boxer, and then the next day he came to me and asked me if I want to box. I said, “Yes, for sure, I dreamed that I was a boxer so why not?” It’s a dream come true.

Q
What are your thoughts, very quickly, as far as this fight being that you’re going to travel to Lamont’s hometown where he enjoys good support, he’s been successful in the past and has fought a couple of his last two or three fights in Washington D.C.? You’re going to be the guy on the road in this one.

D. Jean
For sure. It’s okay. It doesn’t matter. For sure I would prefer to be in my crowd, but it’s going to be okay. I can deal with pressure, and he’s going to be the only one guy in the ring with me. I’m not going to be against the fans. So I’m very good to deal with pressure.

Q
All right, very good, thank you for your answers. I appreciate it. My question for you, Lamont, is we know what happened in the fight against Lucas Matthysse. I’m wondering, from your point of view, how difficult is it to overcome that loss?

Some guys, they come back off of a fight like that, they may go into a smaller fight, an eight-rounder, maybe not a TV fight. You’re jumping right back in against your number one challenger in the main event in front of the home crowd. How was it like for you to get over that knockout loss and to be right back into a somewhat significant fight in the next match?

L. Peterson
Getting over the loss, that happened in one day. Who cares about the knockout? It’s part of boxing. That’s what happens. You pick yourself up and you move on. At this point, it’s in the past. Who cares? As a fighter, you have to block that out and you keep moving. As far as me moving on, I’m a fighter. At the end of the day, I had to focus on January 25th. I train hard, give it my all, and we go out there and we fight. It’s always going to be the same with me. Who cares about what happened in last fight?

Q
So does that mean, Lamont, that even though you got beat in the last fight, but you still have the title because-

L. Peterson
Who cares?

Q
No, no, I understand that. I understand that, but you were at the catch weight. Do you still feel like a champion even though the last fight was a defeat?

L. Peterson
At the end of the day the belts mean nothing. It means a lot to ya’ll, but it means nothing to me. I just love to fight. I go, I bust my ass in the gym, I go and I fight. I give it my all in the ring. Who cares about who’s number one, who’s number two, who’s pound for pound, who has this belt, who has that belt? I care less about that. So whether you look at me as a champion or not, it doesn’t make a difference. The only thing it was is we fought at a catch weight, and me having a belt allows me to have this opportunity to fight Dierry Jean. That’s it. That’s all that belt means.

Q
I understand that. The one other question that would be, you said who cares about a loss and I can certainly appreciate that mentality of just moving on to the next thing, but I’m sure you realize that when you lose it has a tremendous and dramatic impact on the money that you can earn. Isn’t that right? Do you ever think about that?

L. Peterson
Yeah, of course of know that. It’s not my first loss so I know that. It has happened before, but at the end of the day, as a fighter, my mentality has to be who cares? Who’s going to sit around thinking about their last fight, if it didn’t go the way they wanted it to go?

Q
All right, fair enough.

L. Peterson
The best thing to do is to pick you up, forget about it, move on. I know I can still fight. I’m still a good fighter. I have to forget about it.

Q
Happy New Year. A question first to Mr. Jean, what do you see in Lamont Peterson that you feel that you can, without giving your game plan, but what do you see that says you will win this fight and win the title on the 25th?

D. Jean
I see a better fighter. I’m more vicious. I can hit harder than him, and I want it more so I own everything to earn that title.

Q
Okay, good enough. And for Lamont, my question also, fighting in your hometown again and one of the things that I’ve noticed in the fights you’ve had here, I should say, you have gotten off to a little bit of a slow start against Khan, against Holt especially, how important is it for you to get off to a real fast start on the 25th?

L. Peterson
Whether I start off slow or fast it doesn’t make a difference. At the end of the day, my job is to win the fight and that’s what I’m focusing on. If I want to start off slow, then let me start off slow. If I want to start off fast, then I’ll start off fast, but at the end of the day it’s all about a 12-round fight and winning that contest. So that’s what I’m focused on.

Q
Okay, good enough. And a quick question for Mr. Schaefer if he’s there, when we will know the match ups from the under cards, speaking particularly about the fighters from the Washington D.C. area, Dominic Wade and D’Mitrius Ballard? When will we know the match ups for those particular bouts?

R. Schaefer
Well, with for Anthony Peterson, Lamont’s brother, we are working on finalizing that. Dominic Wade, I believe is fighting Deshawn Johnson, and D’Mitrius Ballard, my match makers are working on finalizing that. So hopefully within the next week we have all of that lined up.

Q
Hey, guys, how you doing? Hey, Lamont, I just have one question for you. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody open up a conference call by talking about you the way he did, and I know you’re usually a very even-tempered guy. When you hear somebody talk about you like that and you’re the champion, what does it do? Does it arouse your competitive juices, and I know you’re going to be fighting in front of your hometown crowd, which is always very supportive and you seem energized by that?

L. Peterson
Who cares about what he thinks, what he says? At the end of the day I have to get in there and show him. So it’s not going to make me feel no type of way. He can say what he want. It’s all his perception at this point. he have to go in there and show me.

Q
One other question, how does he stack up against the guys that you fought? Has he fought anybody on your level or any other guys that you fought on their level?

L. Peterson
I’m not sure, but we’re going to find out January 25th.

Q
Hey, Lamont. Hey, Dierry. Hey, how you doing? Hey, my question’s for you, Lamont. I’ve seen you train and everything. Coming off the Matthysse fight are you going into this fight a little harder, training a little harder than you have with any other fight because of coming off of a loss?

L. Peterson
Not really. I always train hard. I always give my best. So how could I train harder when I give it my all every time? So at this point, you go back, regardless of win or lose, you go back and you work on things you feel like you need to work on. You move on. You go the next fight. So that’s exactly what we did.

Q
Maybe I’m not talking about the training aspect, but mentally did you know, do you know, “I must win this fight, because if I lose it’s an opportunity?”

L. Peterson
Well, before I went in there and fought Matthysse I felt that way. So I’m definitely going to feel that way now. It’s not going to be anything else, but I train hard every training camp. I’m not just talking about physical training. I’m talking about mentally. I always do what I’m supposed to do, no hanging out, no family. I stick to a strict diet and a strict lifestyle, and that’s every fight.

Q
Dierry, coming into this fight knowing that you’re fighting a tough fighter that Lamont Peterson is, with his background, the fighters that he’s been fighting against, how are you coming into this fight? What’s your mental state, as far as not conditioning but mental state to make it through this fight and in order to win this fight?

D. Jean
This fight means everything for me. I’ve been working so hard to get there, and now I’m there. It’s to go conquer the belt. It’s a lot for me. For so long, I start at 18 years old, and now I’m 31. I think I deserve it now. I work so hard from the bottom of my heart. So now it’s time to go get that belt. It’s my time now. Lamont did his time. Now it’s now my time.

Q
Dierry, Lamont Peterson has faced a lot of experienced fighters like Tim Bradley, Victor Ortiz. What do you have in your box to prove that you are of world champion caliber?

D. Jean
I got good sparring partners like them who can throw punches, who can take punches. I’ve got Steven Butler. I’ve got all good sparring partners, so welterweight and super welterweight, and by background too you can see the last fight and very exciting. So that means I can hit, and when you can hit it’s very dangerous for another fighter who just came from a big knockout. So I think the win is going to be on my side.

Q
Do you think you faced the most adversity in your career at this time and now it’s like more easy work for you?

D. Jean
No, for sure it’s going to the most adversity of my career, because Lamont Peterson is actual champion. He did his work. He did his job. So he’s there. I got to give him respect. So now, just like I said, it’s my time. So I’m going to go out there and go grab that belt.

R. Schaefer
Thank you to Dierry Jean and to Lamont Peterson. A much anticipated world championship fight. It’s going to be a great night in Washington D.C. I know the fans are going to come out and support their fighters and the card and boxing. These are evenly matched fights, and again, thank you so much to Showtime for showcasing this fight.

I do want to make one last comment, and it is that Lamont Peterson will hold an open media workout in Washington D.C. next Monday on January 13. A media alert with details was sent out earlier today.Thank you so much, and I see you all in Washington D.C. on January the 25th.

Mike Tyson’s meet-and-greet with Las Vegas PAL youngsters a huge hit

Tyson thought it would be fun to workout with kids from the Police Athletic League in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Metro Police Department was thrilled the “Iron” Mike would take time from his busy schedule to meet their PAL youngsters and arranged for two visits this past Saturday.

First stop was Richard Steele Boxing Club in North Las Vegas. Kids and officers lined up and went through slipping-and-weaving techniques, followed by turns on the heavy bag, all under Mike’s watchful eyes.

At Barry’s Boxing Center, another group of eager kids and officers lined up to try the same defensive techniques the late, great trainer Cus D’Amato had instilled in Tyson when he was a teenager.

Tyson was quite impressed by everyone’s hard work. Judging from the bright smile on his face, the former champ appeared to be the happiest person in both gyms.

“I would love to work with kids like this in a gym I hope to have one day,” Mike said.

Tyson presented each attending youngster with a Footlocker gift certificate and training DVD.

Nobutatsu Suzuki is a fighter who has proven that he has knockout power. He has a record of nine knockouts out of ten wins, which gives him one of the highest percentages of stoppage wins via knockout in all of MMA. Suzuki is famous for being the first fighter in Asia to showcase the incredible striking power of Karate in an MMA context. The Kyokushin Karate black belt last fought at ONE FC: RISE TO POWER, defeating one of MMA’s most experienced combatants, Phil Baroni, by TKO. Suzuki will be looking to use that power to earn a ‘Knockout of the Night’ bonus and leave with the coveted ONE FC World Championship title belt.

Brock Larson is a highly experienced fighter who has more than 40 fights in several top organizations across the world. He made a successful ONE FC debut last year when he defeated feared Dutch kickboxer, Melvin Manhoef, via unanimous decision. He now gets an opportunity to cement his legacy when he faces another elite striker in Nobutatsu Suzuki. His 26 submission victories are testament to Larson’s grappling prowess, which he will likely utilize to propel him to victory and emerge as the first ever ONE FC Welterweight World Champion.

Kevin Belingon is the Philippines’ top Bantamweight and has already proven he can compete against the best in the world in his battles against Soo Chul Kim, Masakatsu Ueda, Yusup Saadulaev and David Aranda. He showcased his striking prowess by knocking out his opponent in devastating fashion in his last fight, and will look to do the same to his Korean opponent Dae Hwan Kim.

Dae Hwan Kim is undefeated in nine professional mixed martial arts bouts so far. He made a successful debut in Asia’s largest mixed martial arts organization last December, defeating Australian grappler Thanh Vu via submission. Kim is never afraid to brawl and consistently puts on Fight of the Night performances. Belingon will be his toughest test to date and Kim will move one step closer to a title opportunity as well as maintain his undefeated record if he can overcome the Filipino.

The rematch between Sherilyn Lim and Ann Osman is one of the most heavily anticipated bouts of 2014. Lim won the first bout via split decision after three back-and-forth rounds which had the 12,000 fans in attendance at the Singapore Indoor Stadium jumping off their seats. Lim will once again be representing Singapore’s oldest mixed martial arts gym, Fight G. She has been part of Fight G since 2007, when she joined their Muay Thai program, and has been training under the tutelage of Singaporean MMA pioneer Darren De Silva. Sherilyn has quickly established herself as the best female mixed martial artist in Singapore and will showcase her talents again in March.

Ann Osman is Malaysia’s first female mixed martial artist and has captivated the nation with her infectious personality and indomitable fighting spirit. She trains out of Borneo Tribal Squad in the mountainous region of Kota Kinabalu in East Malaysia. Osman will enjoy the support of her countrymen this time after coming up short despite a valiant effort in Singapore. Her impressive takedowns and vicious ground-and-pound may prove to be the decisive factor in this Women’s Straweight bout.

Ivan ‘The Terrible’ Redkach Set to graduate from prospect to contender

LOS ANGELES (January 12, 2014) – Featuring a ferocious style in a similar beast-mode as fellow Slavic fighters Gennady Golovkin and Sergey Kovalev, undefeated Ukrainian lightweight Ivan “The Terrible” Redkach (15-0, 13 KOs) plans to graduate from prospect to contender this Friday night in his U.S. network debut, airing live on ShoBox: The New Generation from Memphis, Tennessee.

Redkach takes on Canadian boxer Tony “The Lightning” Luis (17-1-1, 7 KOs), who is rated No. 9 by the World Boxing Association (WBA), in the 10-round main event for the vacant United States Boxing Association (USBA) lightweight title.

“I’m humbled to have been named by some media as one of the top prospects in boxing,” the fearsome 27-year-old southpaw said, “but I’m going to make a statement Friday night that I’m a legitimate contender and no longer a prospect. I’m ready to fight the top 135-pounders in the world. I’m not looking past my opponent but I want to fight (Yuriokis) Gamboa. I’m really looking forward to 2014 as the year I establish myself as one of the top 135-pound fighters in the world.”

The Lou DiBella-promoted Redkach is rated No. 13 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and capturing the USBA title will also position him among the top 15 lightweights in the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

Redkach is a real fighter, not a slick boxer in any sense. His knockouts are highlight films, leaving media and fans alike, as well as potential opponents, frightened about the long-term health of his opponents after a fight.

“Ivan has power like Golovkin, Kovalev and (Adonis) Stevenson, the type of fighters fans love to watch,” added Redkach’s manager, Elite Management president Larry Army. “Before I signed him, Ivan did practically everything on his own, outside of Lou and his trainer. Mario Morales, who is the only Team Redkach member we retained. Like any good manager, I set out to put together the best people to support Ivan, in and out of the ring, starting with his strength-and-conditioning coach, Danny Garcia. He’s done a great job with Leo Santa Cruz, who Ivan has sparred with in Los Angeles. Ivan has already put on 10 pounds of muscle. I also brought in Victor Conte to help with Ivan’s nutrition, vitamins and supplements. Ivan was right on weight early and he hasn’t had to struggle at all. Another key addition is assistant trainer and cut-man Russ Anber (Rival Boxing). He won’t be in Ivan’s corner for this fight because he’s also worked Luis’ corner in the past. Ivan’s still in great hands because Danny Milano will be his cut-man for this fight.”

Redkach is a brutal, dangerous punching-machine. Fighters such as Golovkin, Kovalev and Stevenson rank among the most popular contemporary fighters because of the unadulterated savagery they unleash in the ring. Redkach is a rising star who represents the next wave of made-for-television fighters.

ABOUT ELITE MANAGEMENT: Found in 2008 by Atty. Larry Army in Massachusetts, Elite Management is a full-service boxing management firm focused on branding professional boxers. Elite Management is a proven expert in responsibly reviewing contracts, developing talent through effective matchmaking, gaining positive press, and attracting sponsorship and endorsement opportunities for athletes. Andy Gardiner is a special fighter

OTTAWA, CANADA (January 12, 2014) — Ottawa boxer Andy Gardiner burst onto the professional boxing scene only 20 months ago. In his 10 bouts to date, he has consistently taken steps up in competition to better his craft when most fighters are more concerned about protecting their records and building KO ratios. When it was announced this past week that undefeated Thomas Oosthuizen, 22-0, was out of the fight with Eleider Alvarez on January 18, Gardiner wasted no time offering his services to face the WBA ranked #2, WBO ranked #3 light heavyweight in the world.

Gardiner is not just here for a paycheck, the cool factor, or being part of a historic card headlined by the much anticipated Lucian Bute vs. Jean Pascal main event. “I would take this fight for free, in front of nobody,” the clearly motivated Gardiner said. “I don’t care about all that. That’s up to my team to worry about those things. I just want to beat the best fighters available. I’m coming well prepared and I’m coming to steal the show. I don’t care if it hurts. I will hurt him more.”

“Andy isn’t like most fighters,” explained Gardiner’s promoter Camille Estephan, CEO of Eye Of The Tiger Management (EOTTM). “He constantly asks for these types of fights. We could easily take no risks, slowly building him to 20 or 25 and 0 before fighting at this level, but he doesn’t want that because Andy is a real fighter who wants real fights. That’s what really separates him from the rest and that’s why we love him.”
None the less this is a risky business and a risky fight that most boxing fans across North America want to see, probably the biggest fight on the card after the main event. Something that Gardiner’s trainer, Eric Belanger, certainly wants to see. “It’s not a risk at all,” he added. “The risk is all on their side. For Andy, it’s an opportunity. We were in shape, on weight, and we have nothing to lose. So, we don’t see this as a risk. It’s an opportunity that Andy will seize. He is a man possessed in the gym right now and I can promise you he is coming to win no matter what he has to endure. I rarely get truly excited but I can’t wait for this one to be on.”

If you have seen Gardiner fight before, or even had to chance to speak with him, he is hard not to love. He is a simple, nice guy who is willing to go toe-to-toe with anyone, anytime, anywhere for the sake of putting on a show all boxing fans can thoroughly enjoy. Win, lose or draw, his heart and willingness is something that should be embraced by all to get behind Gardiner. Too often prospects are built up without any real opposition and fans continually criticize them for. So, when Andy Gardiner enters that squared circle at the Bell Centreand puts everything on the line on Jan. 18, people there in attendance are encouraged to stand on their feet and make noise for the underdog story fans all love to witness.

Huck verbally counters Arslan: dream on, Firat – I am the champion!

marco-huck8
January 25 will see WBO World Champion Marco Huck to fight compatriot Firat Arslan for a second time. Prior to the rematch of their first fight nearly 15 months ago, which saw Huck escaping with a narrow win on points, the tension is rising – especially between champion and challenger.

Arslan was first to put forward, stating at last Wednesday’s media day: “I am feeling like the world champion since my first fight against Marco, which I actually won. Now it is time to collect my belt from him.”

However, Huck is not having any of it and counters verbally: “Dream on, Firat – I am the champion! But as I am not heartless, I did make a picture of my belt and signed it with a personal dedication for you.”

The 29-year-old is in good spirits: “My stamina as well as my physical strength is reaching new heights. My explosiveness is unquestionable and I also advanced in terms of technique and tactics.” And what does Huck think about his opponent in comparison: “Firat Arslan cannot have a better performance than in our first meeting. With 43 years of age, he flags slow but steady. In comparison, I draw closer to my prime.” He is going to hold his media day this Tuesday.

The taunting between Huck and Arslan starts to increase. January 25 is going to show, who will follow up his words with action.

Tickets for the big fight night at the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle in Stuttgart, Germany can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.easyticket.de.

DIBELLA ENTERTAINMENT TO HOST HISTORIC ROSELAND BALLROOM’S FINAL BOXING EVENT EVER

New York, NY (1/10/14) – After the most successful and entertaining year in the series’ 11+ year existence, DiBella Entertainment will kick of the 2014 season of Broadway Boxing with the final boxing card ever to take place at NYC’s famed Roseland Ballroom, with an event titled “The Last Dance”. Having promoted a number of cards at the venue over the years, the historic ballroom will be closing its doors in April after more than 50 years of operation at its current location.

Featured bouts on the card will see New York fan-favorites Heather “The Heat” Hardy, an undefeated super bantamweight (7-0, 2KO’s), and West Point graduate junior middleweight Boyd “The Rainmaker” Melson (13-1-1, 4KO’s) in separate eight-round bouts. An opponent for Hardy will be announced shortly while Melson is set to go toe-to-toe against Mike Ruiz (17-8, 9KO’s) in what promises to be an all-action affair.

“I am sad that Roseland is closing and that this is the last boxing card we will ever promote there. ‘The Last Dance’ will not only be a celebration of New York boxing, but a celebration of a legendary hall. This boxing card will help say goodbye to Roseland in style,” stated promoter Lou DiBella.

The popular Melson has gained national exposure and was featured on HBO’s Real Sports last year for his involvement with Team Fight to Walkand the Just a Dollar Please organization. Melson has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Spinal Cord research through his effort, which includes donating his entire purse from each fight. With an exciting come-forward style, Melson’s efforts in and out of the ring have seen him continuously pack venues every time he climbs through the ropes. Melson is hoping to move into more significant fights in 2014, but he must first get past the battle-tested Ruiz on February 12.

Like Melson, Ruiz has fought primarily in New York. Ruiz, a Puerto Rican-native now living and training in Queens, has seen his career take a number of ups and downs, which included starting off 0-2 before putting together a string of eight straight victories. Ruiz is 9-4 in his last 13 and was coming off back-to-back stoppage victories prior to dropping a razor-thin eight-round majority decision in an absolute war last time out to world-rated contender Charlie Ohta (24-1-1, 16KO’s, WBO #4, WBC #9 & IBF #11). A win over the once-beaten Melson will put Ruiz’ career back on track and set him up for much bigger opportunities in the talented junior middleweight division.

Ever since she turned pro in August 2012, Hardy’s stardom has continued to rise. Hardy, a NY Golden Gloves champion, signed an exclusive long-term promotional contract with DBE last year and has quickly become one of the main boxing attractions in all of New York. Each time she has stepped into the ring, she has thrilled her adoring and growing fan-base with her exciting and relentless come-forward style. Hardy is coming off back-to-back stoppage victories, with the latter earning her the vacant Universal Boxing Federation International female super bantamweight title. Hardy is looking to continue moving up the world rankings in 2014 and hopes to challenge for her first world championship sometime before the end of the year.

Additional bouts featuring many of the most talented and promising young prospects on the DBE roster will be announced soon.

The card is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and is sponsored by Manfredi Auto Group and Everlast. SNY will broadcast the event tape-delayed. Tickets are currently on sale and can be purchased by calling (212) 947-2577. Tickets are priced at $125, $85, $65 and $45. VIP tables, holding eight seats, are also available for $150 per seat. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. ET with the first bout scheduled for 6:45 p.m. ET. Bouts are subject to change.

BERMAN ANNOUNCES TOP REPLACEMENT FOR FLETCHER BOUT

Johannesburg / Monte Carlo (January 10, 2014) – Max Bursak, one of the standout contenders in the middleweight rankings, has replaced Martin Murray as Jarrod Fletcher’s opponent on the Monte-Carlo Boxing Bonanza tournament on February 1.

The headliner features undefeated WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin in defence of his titles against Osumanu Adama.

Bursak happily stepped in to replace Murray, who claimed to be injured, although it is widely known he is negotiating for another fight.

Bursak (29-1-1, 12 KOs) is ranked in the top 10 of the WBC, WBA and WBO and will put his WBA Continental middleweight belt on the line.

This will be the Ukrainian’s second fight in the principality, having fought the UK’s Prince Arron on the last Golden Gloves show there in 2013 in defence of his European title.

The experienced champion has dominated European opposition and also boasts a win over highly-regarded American Brian Vera in 2010.

The only blip in an otherwise flawless 10-year professional career came in France two years ago when he dropped a decision to unbeaten Hassan N’Dam N’Jikam in his French back yard.

A rugged, come-forward fighter, Bursak demonstrated solid all-round skills against Arron, who was handily beaten last year, and has since followed up with two additional wins, against Nick Blackwell for the vacant WBA Continental middleweight title, and Gari Abajiani of Georgia, who was beaten last month.

“I’m very satisfied with him as a replacement,” said Berman. “I had an inkling Murray would pull out, probably for fear of losing to Fletcher, who is dangerous.”

“Left Jab” Fletcher (17-1, 10 KOs) has accepted the change with good grace and is said to be training up a storm in Australia. The former Beijing Olympian had a storming 2013, winning three of his four fights via stoppage to confirm his contender status.

He is ranked number three in the WBA.

David Price (15-2, 13 KOs) will face Konstantin Airich (19-7-2, 15 KOs) in Stuttgart on January 25. The German heavyweight replaces Evengy Orlov (14-12-1, 10 KOs), who was originally billed as the opponent for Price’s ring return.

Price, who will be making his debut under the Team Sauerland promotional banner, will be the co-feature to the much-anticipated rematch between WBO Cruiserweight Champion Marco Huck (36-2-1, 25 KOs) and Firat Arslan (33-6-2, 21 KOs).

The show will be available to watch on BoxNation in the UK and ARD in Germany. Limited tickets available via eventim.de and easyticket.de.

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 8 CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

LAS VEGAS (Jan. 9, 2013) – World Series of Fighting hosted a media conference call on Thursday with “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Patishnock” headliners Justin Gaethje (10-0) and Rich Patishnock (6-1), as well as main-card competitors Anthony Johnson (15-4), Mike Kyle (20-10-1), Jessica Aguilar (16-4) and Alida Gray (4-0). Joining the fighters on the call was WSOF President Ray Sefo and WSOF Executive Vice President Ali Abdelaziz.

World Series of Fighting 8 will take place Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. Tickets for “World Series of Fighting 8: Gaethje vs. Patishnock,” start at just $29, and are on sale at Ticketmaster.com. The bout tops a five-fight card that airs live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. A five-fight undercard will stream live at www.WSOF.com.

The following are highlights from the conference call:

RAY SEFO:
“Obviously 2013 was a great year for World Series of Fighting and we are looking forward to kicking off the year with two world title fights and our first female fight. I couldn’t be any happier than where we are.

“As far as the challenge out there offered to Bellator, I haven’t heard one negative comment about it. Twitter and Facebook are blowing up all day since that challenge was offered and people are saying let’s make it happen. Someone asked me about what the outcome would be and I would say 10 out of 10 in favor of World Series of Fighting.”

ALI ABDELAZIZ:
“Both Justin (Gaethje) and Rich (Patishnock) are great fighters, they come forward and throw punches; they throw bombs. Stylistically this is a great fight. I can see this fight being five rounds of just a brutal blood bath and the fans are going to be the winner for this one.

“The fans are always going to go with the fighters. If Anthony (Johnson)’s contract is over and he wants to go fight for a different promotion then we will give him a big hug and wish him luck. This is 2014. This isn’t boxing. They are different sports. Everyone should have a dream and should pursue them. When Ray, Shawn (Lampman) and I started this promotion we said: fighters first. This is why we have so many fans behind us and supporting us. We may not be the biggest, but we know that the ones who do tune into NBC Sports are truly MMA fans.

“I assure you we have a big fight coming for Nick Newell in 2014. I have probably the biggest fight of his life on the biggest stage. I’ve been planning this for almost seven months. Everything is about timing and Nick just fought. And we can’t just have all the stars on one card. We want to be able to share the stars on different cards.”

JUSTIN GAETHJE:
“I want to thank the World Series of Fighting for selecting me to be the face of their lightweight division. That’s a big thing that they are entrusting me with and I’m excited about that.

“Rich throws a lot of punches and has a great takedown defense. This is a great matchup skill-wise for both of us. It’s going to be an exciting fight and what I really try to do is give the fans an exciting fight. That’s all I can really control.”

RICH PATISHNOCK:
“I was happy I was given this opportunity and I was getting ready for a fight anyway. I didn’t feel much pressure taking this fight on such short notice. You don’t fight for a specific person. You have to fight for yourself and concentrate on what you’re good at. You come up with a game plan but it really never sticks.
Win lose or draw I’m glad I’ve been given this opportunity.”

ANTHONY JOHNSON:
“It’s going to be exciting to get this fight over with. It seems like it’s been about a year. I had to pull out the first time and then Mike had to pull out the second time. But we’re finally getting it done and both of us are healthy.

“Mike is talented and has one of the best camps you can ever go to, AKA. He says he wants to push my cardio, well let’s push it.

“I definitely plan to stay active this year if I can stay injury free and not break my hand any more. But I’m going to definitely try to break my hand on Jan. 18. As far as 2013, it wasn’t a bad year for me. Even though I couldn’t fight for various reasons I was still in the gym helping my teammates. I was satisfied with 2013.

“Fighting for the title isn’t really on my mind right now. The first step is beating Mike Kyle and we’ll go from there.

“I haven’t hit my prime yet. When I do hit my prime, you’ll know.”

MIKE KYLE:
“It’s a bummer fight fans have had to wait this long for this fight to happen. We’re going to let those fans see a great show and I’m just excited to be a part of something like this.

“I really want to push the fight and push his cardio and see what kind of shape he’s really in. This would make for a great championship fight but it is what it is and I’ll wait for my time.”

JESSICA AGUILAR:
“I’m going to give everything I always give and going to leave everything inside the cage. I’m just excited and grateful.

“It’s been seven and a half years of hard training to get my first world title shot. All the hard work and those hours are finally going to pay off.

“We’re going to mix it up. I’m going to go in there and dance and have fun and show some moves out there.”

“Growing up my father was a karate black belt and we would have contests to see who could punch him the hardest in the tummy. And at the end I would always win and he would always say, ‘For being so little, you punch hard.’ I’m not going to predict what’s going to happen. If I knock her out, great. If I tap her out, great. I’m just looking for a win. However it comes I’ll take it.”

ALIDA GRAY:
“I’m very honored to have been picked for this fight. I’m going to bring a fight to Jessica. I hope everybody’s ready for this.

It hasn’t been overwhelming getting ready for this fight. I watched Jessica fight before I turned pro. I told my coach I’m ready for this fight and ready to take these caliber fights. Finally this summer we made the decision that I was going to pro. I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t know my name. She’s out there and she’s well known. She’s No. 1 ranked. But come Jan. 18 people will get to know me.

“I think we’re both very well-rounded fighters. I’ve been practicing on my stand-up. My judo is going to be there naturally. I’m not going to rely on it, I’m going to depend on it.

“I think my advantage is that I’m the underdog. I’m going in there with nothing to lose.”

DERRICK WEBSTER RETURNING TO RING ON JANUARY 31st

Glassboro, N.J. (Thursday, January 9, 2014) – Undefeated super middleweight Derrick “Take it to the Bank” Webster (14-0, 7 KOs) is now confirmed to end what will be a one-year layoff, meeting gritty veteran Yasin Rashid (7-5, 2 KOs) on Friday, January 31st, at Harrah’s Philadelphia. The bout, which is slated to be for the vacant IBS Super Middleweight Title, is part of the debut show of 2014 for Joey Eye Boxing Promotions.

Webster holds a perfect 14-0 record as a professional fighter (Photo courtesy of Team Webster, Click for full-size version).

“I appreciate Yasin taking this fight because we went after everyone from undefeated prospects to guys with 16-2 type records, only to keep getting turned away,” Webster stated. “So while I plan to put on a show on January 31st, I still respect this man. Sometimes, God has us wait on our moment, and He just let me off the leash. To all of Team Webster and all of my Glassboro Bulldogs, we are going to show up and show out on the 31st.”

Rashid has a deceptive record at first glimpse, as the Brooklyn native has already stepped into the ring against some fighters with very impressive resumes. After starting his professional campaign with seven consecutive victories, he has dropped five straight contests, but those five opponents have shared a collective 47-2-1 record.

Webster last fought in January of 2013 when he won a decision victory over the highly underrated Darnell Boone. In 44 professional fights, Boone has faced just seven total fighters who had three or more losses, standing as the first man to drop number two pound-for-pound fighter Andre Ward and the only man to defeat current WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Adonis Stevenson.

“The anticipation of getting back in the ring has my emotions running on high,” Webster remarked. “To see that I can go from having a year layoff and still have my fans there like they are says a lot about not only myself, but also my fans. Seeing their excitement is making me go even harder in my training because I love seeing my fans happy. There is nothing quite like having a plethora of people who love me like the way my fans do.”

The type of support he receives from his fan base is what Webster credits as helping him survive the frustration he faced in 2013. Now with a fresh new year in front of him, he says that he is ready to reward them for their unquestionable loyalty.

“Words can’t describe the way I feel about my fans,” he continued. “A lot of athletes out there – once they’re gone, they’re gone. I’ve been getting a lot of feedback about how my constantly helping out in the community makes me deserving of all of the loyalty and support I receive. Despite the fact that I haven’t been able to get fights over the past year, I’ve still been spending a lot of time in championship camps, which has kept me on everyone’s radar on the boxing scene. When I first told my close friends, supporters and family that the commission had approved this fight, the type of reception I got from everyone was truly overwhelming.”

Now that this long layoff is finally coming to an end, Webster says everyone can expect an incredible performance from him on the 31st.

“My fans will see a ‘Take it to the Bank’ that they have never seen before,” he predicted. “I’ve grown so much. I’ve improved so much. I’ve truly learned how to take my brush and paint a beating like no other. They’re going to see something that they’ve never seen before. At the end of my fights, I always get a standing ovation. Everyone always ends up on their feet. I’m giving that from the very start of this fight. When go in, we’re going in. My fans have something coming for them.”

Tickets for Webster’s highly anticipated return to the ring on January 31st are available now by calling his team at (609) 680-7131. Seats range in price at $50 (General Admission), $75 (Ringside) and $100 (VIP).

Broadway Boxing gets ready to explode with Melson vs. Ruiz February 12!

New York, NY (January 9, 2014) – On Wednesday, February 12 Army Reserve Captain Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson and Mike “El Cangri” Ruiz will headline the Roseland Ballroom’s final boxing card in a ten round junior middleweight contest. However, both men are fighting for a lot more than the notion of winning the Roseland’s last boxing match.

Melson, residing in Manhattan by way of Brooklyn and White Plains, and Ruiz, who hails from Puerto Rico and resides in Long Island, are two of New York’s most popular prizefighters. Each fighter has appeared in the Big Apple various times, participating in many local classics and knows that a victory could catapult them onto a bigger stage.

With an outstanding 13-1-1 record and four wins by knockout, Melson’s fought thirteen of his bouts in the Empire State. The West Point graduate and 2008 Olympic Alternate dropped a controversial 2012 decision to Delen Parsley in what is widely considered the best match in Broadway Boxing history. Melson also dominated tough veterans Jason Thompson, Gundrick King and Yolexcy Leiva in front of sold out crowds.

A former World Boxing Federation titlist, Ruiz’ record is a deceptive 17-8 with 9 wins by knockout. The charismatic 28-year-old scored a career best victory in July 2012, knocking out world title contender Paul Delgado in his hometown of Atlanta, GA. Like his counterpart, Ruiz took place in memorable bouts in the Big Apple against the likes of Martin Wright (twice), Glen Tapia, Daniel Sostre and Charlie Ota.

“This is going to be a very tough fight for many reasons,” Melson said of his upcoming showdown with Ruiz. “He’s got a lot of experience and was in a lot of close fights that went the other way. Two fights ago, he beat a fighter that fought for a legitimate world title and he’s also faced a lot of top opponents. For most of my fights, I’ve been the clear crowd favorite but Ruiz has a large and vocal fan base of this own. I’m ready for the challenge and know a victory will lead me to better opportunities. I am also excited to have progresses up to the ladder where I am competing for the first time in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds. I owe a special thanks to Lou DiBella for sticking with me and giving me this chance.”

Tickets starting from $45 are available on teamfighttowalk.com.

Following the match, Melson’s pledge to help find a cure for chronic Spinal Cord Injuries will continue when he donates 100% of his earnings from his purse to Justadollarplease.org in support of America’s first trial of its kind.

It was recently released in the nationwide media that this clinical trial we are raising funds for to bring here to the U.S. has resulted in 15 out of 20 patients walking enrolled in the study in China who were paralyzed an average of 7 years. Unfortunately, there still is not enough money to carry the trial out in the US but it is estimated that it could start sometime in 2014. The hopes are for this trial to begin at the end of the Summer of 2014 with Mount Sinai Hospital- Manhattan’s very own- being one of the hospitals carrying out the study.

In association with the 501 (C) 3 nonprofit Justadollarplease.org, Melson and his best friend Christan Zaccagnino created Team Fight to Walk, whose mission is to raise awareness within the boxing community as well as the entire nation about the importance of bringing Clinical Trials to the United States to help cure Spinal Cord Injuries. Team Fight to Walk is comprised of Melson, Zaccagnino, former Rutgers football player/ESPY honoree Eric LeGrand, two-time cruiserweight champion Steve “USS” Cunningham, Austin “No Doubt” Trout, title contender DeAndre “The Bull” Latimore, Edgar “El Chamaco” Santana, Sonya Lamonakis, Hector “Machito” Camacho Jr., WBO Junior Middleweight titlist/2008 US Olympian Demetrius “Boo” Andrade and fellow 08’ Olympian Shawn Estrada along with prospects Sid “The Messenger” El Harrak, Jeff “TNT” Spencer, Denis “Da Momma’s Boy” Douglin, Will “Power” Rosinsky, Floriano “Italiano” Pagliara, Danny “Little Mac” McDermott, Vinny “The Lion” O’Brien, Ahmed “Prince of Egypt” Samir and Delen “Sniper” Parsley.

For more information or to make a donation, go to teamfighttowalk.com or Justadollarplease.org. All specific questions about the nature of the Clinical Trial to cure Spinal Cord Injury can be sent to boydmelson@yahoo.com. JAVIER MOLINA FRACTURES RIGHT HAND THOMAS WILLIAMS JR. VS. CORNELIUS WHITE NEW ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS MAIN EVENT ON JANUARY 24

Sherman Oaks, CA (January 9, 2014) Highly regarded welterweight prospect Javier Molina suffered a fractured right hand in sparring on Wednesday afternoon and has withdrawn from his ESPN Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra™ showdown on JANUARY 24 with former world champion Kendall Holt it was announced today by Dan Goossen, President of Goossen Tutor Promotions.

The new main event for the ESPN Friday Night Fights/”Little Creek Brawl IV” event at the Little Creek Casino Resort in Shelton, Washington, will be a ten round NABO Light Heavyweight Championship clash between top undefeated prospect Thomas Williams Jr. of Fort Washington, Maryland and Houston based world-contender Cornelius White.

“It’s truly an unfortunate situation for Javier who has been saddled with hand injuries since the beginning of his professional career,” said Goossen. “This is the fourth fracture of his hands he’s had to endure. I feel terrible with what this good young man has had to overcome so early in his career.”

“Javier went straight to the renowned Kerlan-Jobe Center in Los Angeles where he was examined by hand specialist Dr. Steve Shin who has scheduled his surgery for next Tuesday,” said Arnulfo Bravo, manager of Molina. “We are taking every step to ensure the best treatment for his eventual return to the ring. Dr. Shin believes he’ll be ready to return to training between three and four months.”

Continued Goossen, “Boxing fans have seen many fighters suffer similar hand injuries as Javier’s and still become world champions. One of the most prominent is Paulie Malignaggi who has had to overcome numerous hand injuries, eventually overcoming them and attaining a highly successful career.”

About the new main event, Goossen stated, “Tom Brown moved quickly to line up a very strong light heavyweight title fight between up-and-coming Thomas Williams Jr. and heavy-handed Cornelius White.”

“Williams is looking to continue his ascent towards becoming a world champion and White will be looking to get back on the winning track following his fight with world champion Sergey Kovalev.”

The 26 year-old southpaw Williams, 15-0-0 (10 KOs) is coming off a sensational 2013 campaign with four outstanding wins. Most recently he dominated former world title challenger Yusaf Mack over ten rounds winning a unanimous decision on November 26 in Sunrise, Florida.

On May 18, 2013, Williams won a decision over perennial contender Otis Griffith at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Williams is currently world ranked #12 by the International Boxing Federation.

Known as “Da Beast,” the hard-hitting White has compiled a record of 21-2-0 with sixteen knockouts over his six-year professional career.

Prior to his loss to Kovalev, the 32-year-old White was riding a five bout winning streak with strong wins over top prospects Yordanis Despaigne and Dmitry Sukhotsky in addition to a decision win over Otis Griffith.

White is also world ranked by the International Boxing Federation at #14 in the world.

“While we are disappointed for Javier Molina, we had been seriously considering broadcasting the Williams-White match as part of that show so we are still expecting an outstanding night. We think Thomas Williams is a fighter that ESPN fans will want to get to know and we’re confident that Cornelius White will want to prove that sentiment wrong,” said ESPN’s Sr. Director of Programing & Acquisitions Brian Kweder.

“Little Creek Brawl IV” will open the ESPN broadcast with former World Champion Rico Ramos (22-3, 12 KOs) taking on upset-minded Jonathan Arellano (14-2-2, 3 KOs) in a 10-round Featherweight Bout.

Advance tickets priced at $40 can be purchased by calling (800) 667-7711 or online at www.Little-Creek.com. Doors will open on the night of the event at 4:30 p.m. with the first bell at 5:00 p.m. For more information and directions to the Little Creek Casino Resort, please visit their website at www.Little-Creek.com

Disappointed Arash Usmanee Discusses Injury, Pulling out of Friday Night Fights Main Event

IBF #8-ranked Afghani-Canadian Arash Usmanee says he’s very disappointed to be missing out on his scheduled main event this Friday night at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma, Washington.

Usmanee (20-1-1, 10 KOs) was scheduled to face Mexican KO artist Juan Antonio “El Mozo” Rodriguez (25-4, 23 KOs) in a 10-round super featherweight battle before suffering an injury in training earlier this week, forcing him to withdraw.

“My feet got tangled in sparring. I had injured it before in my last two fights. I twisted it when my feet got tangled and I fell,” explained Usmanee. “I’m babying it. It’s a sprain, so it could take a while. Sometimes it heals quickly and sometimes it takes a bit. It’s starting to feel better. I have to wear a brace.”

The timing of the injury is especially unfortunate for Usmanee, who would have liked to use the momentum of a globally televised victory on Friday Night Fights to propel him into a rematch with arch rival Rances Barthelemy, who recently won the IBF World Championship at Junior Lightweight.

The pair fought to a very controversial draw in January of last year, a fight which many felt Usmanee deserved the nod.

“I was excited about it. It was a good fight for me. Barthelemy just won the title. It was perfect for setting up a rematch between me and him on a bigger stage.”

Still Usmanee is hoping Barthelemy’s words post winning the title were his true intentions

.

“He said he doesn’t care who he fights, and that he’d fight the Lion of Damascus. Well, The Lion of Afghanistan is ready. For him, on the inside, to feel like he has that belt, he has to fight me. He has to have a win over me. With the way our last fight turned out, it’s only fair I get a shot for him to feel like he’s the real champion.”

Cruiserweight Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu Q&A About His Upcoming Fight Against Olanrewaju “God’s Power” Durodola

Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu is preparing for his upcoming fight against Olanrewaju “God’s Power” Durodola on NBCSN Fight Night, Friday, January 24th live from Resorts International Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. He took time out of training camp to answer questions about his opponent, the fight and his career.

What are your predictions for your fight on Friday, January 24?

TM: I’m gonna start the New Year with a bang! I’m a boxer and can punch when I want to! I’m gonna make some fans in the US!

How does it feel to be back on NBCSN Fight Night?

TM: Really motivates me when I’m on (NBCSN) Fight Night! Truly an honor

How do you feel about fighting in the US for the second time?

TM: I absolutely love it!

Did you change anything about your training routine for this fight?

TM: Pretty similar

What is a typical day in training camp like for you?

TM: Running, sparring and technical work with my coach Sean Smith; he keeps me on point! We click together.

Who have you sparred with leading up to this fight?

TM: Danie Venter, Isaac Chilemba and Kevin Lerena

Your opponent, Durodola, has had a total of sixteen fights and stopped fourteen of them, does this concern you?

TM: Not really; it’s easy to stop “nobodies”.

What do you know about Durodola?

TM: He’s an African fighter and former Olympian but nothing I haven’t seen before.

Durodola is in the same position you were in when you fought Eddie Chambers. How are you going to stop him from capitalizing on this opportunity?

TM: My destiny and his are different.

In your last fight you beat Eddie Chambers – Do you feel you have to prove beating Chambers was not an accident?

TM: No. I’m gonna prove that anyone you put in front of me, I am gonna beat!

How has your last win changed things for you?

TM: Makes me even more certain I can dominate – but not much! Hungry as ever!

The current cruiserweight champions are Yoan Pablo Hernandez (IBF), Denis Lebedev (WBA), Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (WBC) and Marco Huck (WBO), which of these champions do you want to face first? Which of these champions do you feel would be easiest/hardest to beat?

TM: I want the WBC belt first. I don’t care who’s got it. Then I want to unify the belts. I want to fight Huck- he’s got a big mouth!

WBO champion Marco Huck is scheduled to face former world champion Firat Arslan on January 25th in a rematch. What do you think of that fight?

TM: It will be interesting but I’m sure Huck will defend.

What are your thoughts on the passing of Nelson Mandela?

TM: His struggles have given me the opportunity I have today! I wanna show my appreciation to him and be a great success in boxing to honor what he has done for our nation and for people around the world!

STEVENS – MAJEWSKI BOUT STARTS AN ELECTRIC YEAR IN THE MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION

Curtis Stevens
Atlantic City, NJ: The Stevens-Majewski fight scheduled for Friday, January 24th on NBCSN live from Resorts Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ marks the first of many explosive middleweight match-ups awaiting boxing fans in 2014. The red hot middleweight division saw some memorable bouts in 2013 and is jam-packed with exciting champions and contenders that will produce some wild match-ups this year.

Gennady Golovkin is arguably the top middleweight fighter in the world and in 2013 he showed the world why with four wins all coming by knockout (Gabriel Rosado, Nobuhiro Ishida, Matthew Macklin and Curtis Stevens). In 2014, the WBA champion is expected to face some tough contenders starting with his fight against Osumanu Adama in February.

WBC and lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez defeated Martin Murray in Argentina in April 2013 but was sidelined due to injuries for the rest of the year. He is expected to face former three-division world champion Miguel Cotto in June. Cotto, for his part, will seek to make Puerto Rican history by dethroning the champ to win a world title in his fourth division.

WBO champion Peter Quillin also defeated Fight Night alum Gabriel Rosado in 2013 in a controversial tenth round stoppage. It remains to be seen what the WBO champ will do in 2014.

After successfully defending his IBF title four times, Daniel Geale lost his belt to Darren Barker in August. Barker then lost to former WBA world champion Felix Sturm in Germany in a stunning second-round knockout. Sturm had previously lost the WBA title – that he successfully defended for six years – to Geale in 2012 via a split decision loss. Geale is scheduled to face Garth Wood in February from Australia but has been calling for a rematch with Sturm for a chance to reclaim the IBF title.

The would-be contenders for the middleweight crown begin their campaigns for a title shot on Friday, January 24th from Resorts International Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, with the much-anticipated fight between Curtis “Showtime” Stevens and Patrick “The Machine” Majewski. The Stevens-Majewski fight will be a “put up or shut up” fight for both men as both are coming off recent defeats.

Stevens lost his last fight at Madison Square Garden to Gennady Golovkin. Stevens has taken the shortest break of any of Golovkin’s 2013 KO recipients since his eighth-round knockout in November before getting back in the ring again. When asked about the match-up Stevens said, “It’s time for me to get back in the ring.” He added, “It is my goal to eliminate all of the middleweights in the division and get another crack at the title; I am ready for anything Majewski might throw at me. When I get in the ring there will be no overthinking, I am just going to do what I do best.”

Majewski lost via unanimous decision to Patrick Nielsen in twelve rounds in September after winning four in a row dating back to April 2012. “The Machine” said, “I need this big challenge. I realize winning this fight against Curtis Stevens can push me up in the ranks of the middleweight division. I do not intend to fail, believe me I have been training and studying very hard and I am ready to pass this test.”

NBC Sports Group’s Fight Night’s play-by-play announcer Kenny Rice said, “I think this has the potential to be a very interesting fight. We all know that Curtis Stevens is a supreme KO artist. A decent proportion of Majewski’s wins [52%] have also come via knockout. I think the two of them feel they have a lot to prove in this fight.” He added, “Stevens will want to reestablish himself in the middleweight division and Majewski will see this as a vehicle for solidifying a position in the division. There are a lot of good scenarios that can develop when you have two hard hitting guys; we could be in for some fireworks.”

Both men will come out swinging with something to prove on the 24th. In this tough middleweight division a loss for either fighter could mean they will get lost in the shuffle of contenders looking to move up the ranks – including Patrick Nielsen who has yet to make his US debut, David Lemieux fighting out of boxing hot spot Montreal and Marco Antonio Rubio who is the WBC’s mandatory opponent and is awaiting his shot at Sergio Martinez following the Martinez-Cotto fight in 2014. Other middleweight challengers include former champions Darren Barker and Daniel Geale and past contenders Martin Murray, Matthew Macklin, Andy Lee, Sam Soliman and Bryan Vera. Upcoming prospects include Max Bursak and Danny Jacobs.

B.J. Flores, NBC’s boxing analyst said, “Curtis was on nobody’s radar two years ago and now people definitely know the name Curtis Stevens. He came on with Main Events, fought on NBC three times and the next thing you know he is fighting Golovkin, the best middleweight in the division. Not everyone can bounce back from a loss like that; Curtis has a lot to prove in this fight.” He went on to say, “This fight against Curtis will be Majewski’s chance to step up and get on the middleweight map; if he wants a chance at a title he needs to beat Curtis. It is a make or break fight for both guys.”

Boxing fans and networks can mix and match any of the champions or contenders in the middleweight division for a heart-stopping fight. This level of parity and excitement is what makes for historically great boxing. The sport has not seen a batch of potential middleweight stars like this since the 1980s with Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns and Roberto Duran. It is also reminiscent of the great heavyweight division of the 1990s including Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe. And it all begins live from Atlantic City on Friday, January 24th on NBCSN Fight Night.
