Long road for Diekmann leads back to the cage

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Jan. 6th, 2016) — No one’s happier to put 2015 in the rearview mirror than Josh Diekmann.

“That would be an understatement,” he said.

The start of a new year is often considered a checkpoint for people either looking to turn their lives around or usher in a much-needed change, a time to wipe the slate clean, reinvest in family or finally get to work on the resolutions they still haven’t tackled.

Diekmann just hopes to get through a full calendar year without losing another loved one, or going back under the knife.

Over the past 15 months, the Groton, Conn., heavyweight and 4-time Bellator vet underwent three knee surgeries, broke both hands, tore a tendon in one wrist, lost his job, lost his first fight in three years, and buried five close friends – all of whom died tragically within the span of eight weeks – while battling his own personal demons outside of the cage, among them alcohol abuse and excessive self-medicating.

Suffice it to say, the 39-year-old Diekmann couldn’t wait for the clock to strike midnight on January 1st even if, as he says, “Time is man-made.”

“I’m finally dealing with shit I should’ve dealt with when I was 12 years old,” Diekmann said. “It’s kind of pathetic, but it’s where I’m at. Time is nothing more than an illusion, but it’s all I have to cling to right now.”

DIEKMANN’S 11-MONTH layoff and self-imposed exile come to an end Friday, Jan. 8th, 2016. Like everything else he does, both in and out of the cage, “The Freight Train” is back in big way, starring alongside the region’s top talent on the nationally televised main card of “CES MMA XXXII” at Twin River Casino.

Diekmann would do anything for a friend, often at his own expense. This might come as a surprise to some, but not to his closest friends, not to those who knew Diekmann didn’t exactly have a “silver-spoon” childhood.

The product of a broken home, in a manner of speaking, he’s been fighting his whole life. Diekmann was viciously taunted, bullied, and abused. He internalized a lot of it, but some of it naturally manifested itself in a more physical, violent way.

At 15, this behavior led him to an inpatient unit in a mental health facility in Queens.

“Because I was too large and unpredictable to be around the ‘normal’ crazy kids my age, I was housed in an adult unit,” he says.

At 5-foot-11 and a solid 215 pounds, Diekmann wasn’t exactly a gentle giant. Though not quite straightedge, he eventually shed the straight jacket and found a new way to channel his anger.

He began practicing judo and other martial arts, where he eventually met Kent Ward, the owner of Whaling City Boxing in New London and the father of Bellator star Brennan Ward.

Finally, Diekmann’s anger had a positive, productive – if not profitable – outlet. His friendship with the Ward family, and his brotherly relationship with Brennan, led Josh (and eventually Brennan, too) into the tumultuous confines of what most people call, “the octagon.”

After years of being little more than a sideshow act on the underground circuit, throwing hands in smoke-filled rooms where people barely paid attention, Diekmann made his professional debut in 2005, stopping his opponent in 24 seconds. He fired 44 strikes in that timespan – punches, kicks, etc. – successfully landing each one.

Fighting was always therapeutic for Diekmann. It was a way for him to unload all of his problems and pain onto a randomly designated, although willing, stranger. He took comfort in knowing there would be no repercussions, no trips to the mental facility and, best of all, no “gang of over-sized staff, no shots of Thorazine, and no fucking straightjackets.” It was one-on-one therapy in a cold, steel cage.

But the euphoria was short-lived. Even fighting stopped being fun after a while. Diekmann can’t quite pinpoint when it all began to go downhill, but he vividly recalls a loss to UFC vet Josh Hendricks in 2012, a fight in which Diekmann absorbed an inadvertent knee to the groin seven seconds into the opening round of their main-event bout.

“The place was eerily quiet. I could sense the frustration of the strangers, and the empathy from my loved ones, hoping I would get up,” he said.

“The two minutes I was down felt like an eternity, I could hear people screaming – pleading – with me to take my time as I tried to regain my feet. Although I felt the urge to simultaneously piss, puke, and shit, the urge I felt to give the people what they wanted, what they paid their hard-earned money for, superseded any pain or discomfort I felt at the time.”

Diekmann got up, but never regained his composure. Hendricks won by submission via arm triangle at the 2:30 mark.

“I had a bruise from the back of my knee all the way to the middle of my back,” Diekmann said. “That knee literally ruptured my testicle. The swelling was so severe that I had to tie my balls up with an ace bandage to alleviate the pressure caused by the excessive weight from the swelling. It would be three weeks before the swelling subsided enough so I could get an ultrasound. It really fucked my whole body chemistry up.”

He found ways to deal with the pain, both physical and mental – “self-medicating,” as he described it – and continued a troublesome pattern of masking whatever was bothering him with alcohol and other vices. Through it all, Diekmann remained a top heavyweight in the northeast, winning his first three fights with Bellator, including a vicious 47-second knockout win over another UFC vet, Mike Wessel, in September of 2014 at the Mohegan Sun Casino.

AS THE CALENDAR turned from 2014 to 2015, real life eventually caught up with Diekmann; he reached a point he described as something worse than rock bottom.

“The rock was on top of me, crushing my ribs and the very air from my lungs,” he said.

Of the five friends he lost from late 2014 to early 2015, one died just five years after a double lung transplant, a 46-year-old victim of cystic fibrosis named Gina Rochetti.

“Gina literally fought for every breath she ever took. The doctor’s said that within the first five years, the lungs would either take or reject. Just about five years to the day, they rejected and we lost her,” Diekmann said.

“It just crushed me. She had been an inspiration and I became angry and pessimistic after her loss.”

Two weeks later, Diekmann got a phone call informing him another close childhood friend had taken his own life. Three weeks after that – just six days before his Bellator 134 showdown against Raphael Butler in February – his best friend passed away.

“He died right at my feet,” Diekmann said. “To this day, no amount of self-medicating can get that picture of him lying on the floor out of my head. As a fighter, I’ve seen plenty of friends lying unconscious in front of me, but they always got up. I waited for him to get up, but he never did.

“Once all the dust settled, all that shit hit me like the proverbial freight train, no pun intended.”

With injuries having taken their toll on his body, Diekmann underwent to repair a torn meniscus in each knee. He was supposed to go under the knife one more time that year while simultaneously nursing a torn tendon in his wrist in addition to two broken hands. Doctors prescribed painkillers, which only led to more “self-medicating”.

“Maybe I’m dyslexic. The bottle said, ‘Take 1 every 4 hours for pain,’ but, realistically, it was more like four every hour. I’d feel good, pass out, wake up and do it all over again. It was fucking horrifying.”

Diekmann not only lost friends through death, he also lost friends who had turned their backs on him, friends who maybe grew tired of his behavior and or the poor decisions he was making in his personal life and kept their distance. The guilt was also eating away at him from the inside, guilt from wondering whether or not he could have saved a few of his friend had he been there for them in their darkest hours instead of drowning his own troubles in alcohol.

It was, as he described it, “a chemical warfare” raging inside his body with no light at the end of the tunnel.

“I’ve battled a lot of demons, that’s no secret. I’ve had to go through this alone as I lived in my own head. I’ve spent so much time helping others that maybe it was inconceivable to them that I was actually the one who needed help,” Diekmann said.

“Fuck it. Whatever. All of this has made me stronger. I’m still dealing with the guilt. A couple of the people I lost could have been the people who would have been there for me. The time away from the cage turned out to be a blessing. Inevitably, it’s what led me to reach rock bottom.”

BY THE END of last summer, right around his 39th birthday, a routine blood test revealed Diekmann’s red blood cell and platelet counts were extremely low. His “good” cholesterol was virtually non-existent.

“They were checking me for MDS [myelodysplastic syndrome], Leukemia, everything you could imagine, but I couldn’t tell anyone because of the history of cancer in my family and family of my best friend,” he said. “I went to the doctor for follow-up blood work and they eventually pumped me full of dye and gave me an MRI.”

The reality was Diekmanns’ bad habits outside of the cage were finally catching up to him. It was the wake-up call he needed.

“It really scared the shit out of me,” Diekmann said. “I wasn’t necessarily concerned for my own physical well-being, but rather for the mental and emotional well-being of my family and loved ones.”

AS HE APPROACHES his first fight of 2016, a three-round bout against Tennessee’s Ashley Gooch (8-4, 6 KOs), a former RFA (Resurrection Fighting Alliance) Heavyweight Champion, on the main card of Friday’s AXS TV telecast, Diekmann admits he’s finally proud of himself for taking the necessary steps to turn his life around.

“I feel better. I feel stronger. I’m more centered,” he said, “I’ve taken some serious steps in the right direction. I’m doing good today and that’s all I can really concern myself with.”

Some might wonder why the 39-year-old Diekmann would continue to put his body through the wringer in such a demanding sport, but, as he puts it, “For me, idle hands are the devil’s workshop.”

Diekmann wants to stay busy. He needs to stay busy. In his spare time, he enjoys writing and is a surprisingly adept guitar player, something he got away from but has reinvested himself in for his friend, Joe Doto, whom he described as a “virtuoso.” Diekmann has even penned several columns for a local MMA website and is in the process of launching his own site, a directory for people to connect with local gyms as well as an outlet to post his memoirs. He also landed a role as a stuntman in the third installment of The Purge, which will be released in theaters this spring. He stars in a fight scene opposite former Olympian and Rhode Island heavyweight boxer Jason Estrada. He’s since been contacted for additional stunt work.

Writing and learning the film industry has become as therapeutic as fighting, Diekmann says. He’s got a lot going on these days, which is a good thing.

“If I ain’t got something to do,” he says, “then I’m reaching for something.”

Being part of an estranged family – his mother and father had him when they were 21 and 18, respectively – Diekmann also finds comfort in the camaraderie of the fight world, spending time with his training partners and coaches, Greg Rebello; the crew at Tim Burrill’s, Pete and Keith Jeffrey and everyone at Tri-Force MMA; and, most importantly, the Wards, who never left his side even when most of his sponsors bailed on him following his loss in February.

“Maybe that’s part of why I’ve hung around for so long,” he says, “because if I don’t fight, I don’t get the chance to be around all those guys.”

As for what the future holds, Diekmann refuses to look past Friday. What’s motivating him? Even he can’t pinpoint it. All he knows is when the first bell rings, he will finally be at peace, living in the moment, second to second.

“It’s chaos, but I embrace it because it’s the only time I can truly be free from my thoughts,” Diekmann said. “Now that I look at everything that’s happened, it’s all so simple. Go workout, you fucking douche. Don’t get drunk every night. Don’t pollute yourself. It all seems so simple now. All that stuff clouded my mind and my judgment. Stepping away, looking back, I feel like I just left the fucking ‘Twilight Zone.'”

“I still have a tendon I need to fix,” he continued, “but I’ve put it off because I’m so fucking sick of surgery. I’ve made some really bad decisions recently that have affected people I care about. I’ll never live that down. I won’t allow myself. Even if I am forgiven, I’ll never be able to free myself from that guilt. I’ve lost some people, some of whom I’ll never see again.

“I’m not sure what hurts worse, the thought of never seeing them or having to face the people who are still amongst us whom I’ve let down. It all hurts. I’m doing my best to try to deal with it. I just have to keep my chin down, my hands up, and my eyes open. It’s fundamental in fighting, but it’s a fitting metaphor for life as well.”

He’s put the past behind him. One of his worst years (to date) is over. Once that bell rings Friday night, it’s not only the start of a new fight, and a new year, it’s also the beginning of the rest of his life.

“I now look at each day like a different round. Some days I win, some days I lose. Occasionally I get knocked on my ass and have to take a standing 8, but so far I’ve always been able to get back up.

“As long as my eyes are open, and my feet are on the floor, I’ll keep moving forward. I finally feel like my nose is above water. I can feel the moisture in my nostrils, but fuck it. At least I’m still breathing….”

WSOF27: Two New Bouts Complete Main Card For January 23

LAS VEGAS (January 5, 2016) –World Series of Fighting (WSOF.com) announced today that it has completed the live NBCSN televised (10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT), main card portion of its inaugural event of the New Year that will also mark its debut at the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday, Jan. 23, with two new bouts featuring three undefeated, rising stars.

In a lightweight (155 pounds) contest that will kick off the live NBCSN telecast of WSOF27, unbeaten Bryce “Thug Nasty” Mitchell will square off with Jorge Medina while, in a welterweight (170 pounds) matchup, Jaleel “The Realist” Willis and Chauncey “The Machine” Foxworth will put their respective, perfect records on the line against one another.

“We are looking forward to kicking off 2016 with another spectacular, action-packed fight card that is filled with our customary mix of established, name fighters and top level prospects that have been climbing the ranks of rival competitors in order to make it to the big show,” said World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo.

Bryce Mitchell vs. Jorge Medina

At just 21 years of age, Mitchell (4-0) of Searcy, Ark. is quickly gaining steam on the professional circuit and a reputation for being a considerable threat on the mat. Since making his pro debut last January, he has produced first round submissions – three by way of rear-naked choke and the last by way of armbar – in all four of his starts.

As an amateur, Mitchell delivered similar results, earning all five of his victories between June 2013 and August 2014 by way of first round submission, en route to a near-perfect 5-1 record.

Mitchell’s opponent, Medina (4-2) of Nashville, Tenn., has also imposed his will on the canvas with phenomenal submission work, forcing his first three professional opponents to tap out from either strikes or from a rear-naked choke.

A product of Nashville MMA, the training camp that gave rise to notable stars such as Dustin Ortiz and undefeated Luke Sanders, Medina is looking to rebound from a second round (4:22) TKO (kicks) defeat at the hands of Pedro Gomes on March 28, 2015.

Jaleel Willis vs. Chauncey Foxworth

Willis (5-0) of Memphis is a former high school wrestling star who has carried his previous athletic success into the cage where he has been taken the distance of a fight just once over the course of five professional matchups.

Outside of the sole unanimous decision that he was the victor of, Willis has finished all of his adversaries inside of one round, and all with an onslaught of punches.

To date, Foxworth (2-0) of Hot Springs, Ark. has dominated similarly, scoring first round TKO’s in both of his efforts as a professional. The 24-year-old competed as an amateur for nearly three years and 15 bouts, winning 7 of the contests by way of (T)KO or submission.

Tickets for WSOF27 start at just $39.99, and are on sale at WSOF.com, all Ticketmaster locations, ticketmaster.com, the FedExForum Box Office, or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

In the lightweight (155 pounds) main event, Mike “The Martian” Ricci will square off rival star Caros “The Future” Fodor.

The 29-year-old Ricci (11-4) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada is riding a three-fight win streak after scoring a highlight reel KO on Joe Condon with a head kick in the first round (2:41) of their WSOF25 quarterfinal stage tournament matchup on November 20, 2015.

Fodor (10-4) of Kirkland, Wash. is a 31-year-old protégé of Matt Hume and brother of fellow World Series of Fighting athlete Phoenix Jones, looking to notch his third consecutive win in his promotional debut after concluding a successful, four-fight run in Asia.

In the light heavyweight (205 pounds) co-main event, heavy-handed finisher Teddy Holder (9-2) of Bartlett, Tenn. will battle undefeated Shamil Gamzatov (9-0) of Makhachkala, Russia.

Gamzatov, the number two ranked light heavyweight in the Ukraine, has yet to be taken past the second round of a fight, while Holder has earned all nine of his professional career wins by way of (T)KO or submission.

The WSOF27 preliminary bout card will be announced soon.

Nordby looking forward to epic 2016

LINCOLN, R.I. (Jan. 4th, 2016) — If this recent training camp has taught Kody Nordby anything it’s that you can’t waste time worrying about things that are out of your control.

Originally scheduled to fight unbeaten Joey Gomez Friday night in what would’ve been a huge step up for the 5-foot-3 bantamweight out of Cumberland, R.I., Nordby (5-3) was forced to switch gears midway through his preparation for “CES MMA XXXII” when Gomez suffered a rib injury.

Bombsquad vet Josh Lange stepped to the table and agreed to face Nordby on the AXS TV main card, but that fight also went up in smoke when Lange broke his nose, leaving Derek Shorey (3-2, 2 KOs) of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, as the third – and hopefully final – opponent Nordby has had to prepare for in advance of his Jan. 8th return to the cage.

Not only is Nordby moving up five pounds to meet Shorey at a catch weight of 140, he’s also dealing with the sting of watching Gomez get the call to face former CES MMA champ Rob Font at UFC Fight Night 81 in Boston just nine days after he fights Shorey at Twin River Casino, a call Nordby felt could’ve been his if he’d had the opportunity to get to Gomez first.

“I’m pretty sure I would’ve given him the first loss on his record. I’m 100 percent sure,” Nordby said. “Am I mad about it? Yeah. He was supposed to fight me and he backed out. Whatever. He got the call. Anyone else would’ve done the same thing. When the UFC calls, you can’t say no.

“I’m just at the point now where if you put anyone in there, I’ll fight him. Every fight is the same. There’s no face, just another body in there.”

In the unpredictable world of combat sports, a fighter’s success often hinges on being in the right place at the right time. With that in mind, Nordby has now shifted his focus to the task at hand, which is building off of his huge win over Dinis Paiva at “CES MMA XXXI” and taking care of business against Shorey in his second nationally-televised fight.

“I’m just focused on me right now,” Nordby said. “I’m not really focused on anything else. I’m focused on Friday. The weight cut is going well, the fight camp has been awesome. I’m just ready to get in there.

“When [CES MMA matchmaker] Pat [Sullivan] called and asked me if I was comfortable moving up in weight, I told him, “Yeah, whatever I have to do to get on this card.”

Following his breakthrough win over Paiva, Nordby now understands the value of exposure at the national level. Paiva entered that fight in October with wins in six of his last eight bouts, including four consecutive stoppages in the opening round. He was the hottest fighter in the northeast and he and Nordby had a bit of a personal vendetta between the two of them, which played out during pre-fight interviews and at the weigh-in.

Through it all, Nordby kept his composure and won convincingly by submission in the opening round via the rear-naked choke, thwarting Paiva’s attempt at a flying knee to open the bout and scoring a critical takedown that eventually led to the finishing move.

“I had to bury all the bad blood. I just buried it,” he said. “I thought to myself, ‘Whatever beef Dinis and I have needs to take a backseat.’ That fight was all about me. I had a game plan and I followed it.

“I think Dinis fought a little too emotional and it worked against him. He came out quick with that right knee, I saw it, flipped it, grabbed the knee and took him down pretty quickly. I kept my cool. I wasn’t too fired up.”

The win put Nordby in the conversation among the elite bantamweights in the northeast and paved the way for his second AXS TV fight this Friday. An accomplished wrestler in high school, Nordby hopes his second go-round on national television allows him to showcase all of his talents.

“The game plan is to knock him out on his feet and show people I’m not just a grappler,” he said.

Though he insists he’s focused squarely on Friday night, it’s only natural for Nordby to keep an eye on the future. If he gets the win over Shorey, he has his sights set on an even bigger bantamweight showdown in 2016.

“I really, really want to fight Andre Soukhamthath,” Nordby said, referencing the 9-3 Rhode Island native who also won his last bout at “CES MMA XXXI” in October.

“He graduated from Woonsocket [High School], which is the same school I graduated from. We know the same people. It’d be a huge fight for both of us and a huge fight for any promotion.

“I’ve been wanting to fight him since I turned pro. Hopefully, we can get in the cage.”

Much like the setbacks he dealt with in this recent camp, locking down a mega-fight against Soukhamthath is ultimately out of his control. The only thing he can control right now is getting another win on Friday night and continuing to make his case as an elite fighter in his weight class.

Tickets for “CES MMA XXXII” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and available for purchase online at www.cesmma.com, www.cagetix.com/ces, www.twinriver.com or www.ticketmaster.com, by phone at 401-724-2253/2254, or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

The main event features a lightweight showdown between reigning CES MMA Lightweight Champion Luis Felix (14-8, 5 KOs) of Providence, R.I., and Bellator vet Ryan Sanders (9-7, 1 KO) of Bangor, Maine, in a three-round non-title bout.

Also featured on the main card of “CES MMA XXXII,” reigning CES MMA Welterweight Champion Gil Freitas (18-5, 6 KOs) makes his first title defense in a five-round bout against Cincinnati’s Chris Curtis (12-4, 4 KOs), who aims to become the third Ohio-born fighter to capture one of the promotion’s titles, joining a list that includes UFC vets Lane and Dominique Steele.

Another familiar face in the northeast returns to the CES MMA cage Jan. 8th as Groton, Conn., heavyweight and four-time Bellator vet Josh Diekmann (15-6, 11 KOs), now in his 11th year as a pro, battles fellow knockout artist Ashley Gooch (8-4, 6 KOs) of Nashville, Tenn.

Rising featherweight Kyle Bochniak (5-0, 2 KOs) makes his second appearance on the televised main card as he puts his undefeated record on the line against Taylor Trahan (5-4) of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and undefeated bantamweight Rico DiSciullo (5-0, 2 KOs) of Peabody, Mass., faces 16-fight vet Chino Duran (8-8, 4 KOs) of Homestead, Fla.

The preliminary card features six exciting bouts, starting with a featherweight showdown between unbeaten Manny Bermudez (3-0, 1 KO) of Abington, Mass., and Evan Parker (5-3, 1 KO) of nearby Worcester. None of Bermudez’s previous three opponents made it out of the first round and the 5-foot-6 submission specialist is looking to make it 4-for-4 against the game Parker, who choked out Pete Rogers Jr. in his CES MMA debut in June. South Boston featherweight James Murrin (3-3, 2 KOs) faces Mak Kelleher (0-2) of upstate New York and Providence’s Keenan Raymond (2-2) battles newcomer Ryan Todd of Cortland, N.Y.

Also on the preliminary card, middleweights Pat McCrohan (1-0, 1 KO) of Beverly, Mass., and Boston’s Mike Rodriguez (2-0, 2 KOs) put their unbeaten records and knockout streaks on the line against one another and flyweight David Baxter (1-0) of Bellingham, Mass., makes his CES MMA debut against newcomer Joshua Ricci of Whitesville, N.Y. Providence’s Nick Iaciofano (2-0, 1 KO) battles Luay Ashkar of Syracuse in a three-round flyweight bout.

On 23 January, at the Changsha Stadium in Changsha, China, ONE WUJIE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS will delight fans with an electrifying lineup of exciting fights headlined by a main event which will see ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes defend his title against challenger Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon of the Philippines.

CEO of ONE Championship, Victor Cui stated, “ONE Championship continues its dedication to cultivating the sport of mixed martial arts in China with another adrenaline-filled night of fights! This is a great way to start 2016 and is just the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. Our success in Beijing sets the stage for an even better event in Changsha.”

Tickets for ONE WUJIE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS (CHANGSHA) are available at www.onefc.com/tickets.

ONE Bantamweight World Champion, Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil is one of the most dominant title holders in ONE Championship. Considered one of the best fighters in the world and is ranked as one of the top bantamweights, Fernandes has amassed a stellar professional record which hasn’t seen him lose a bout in the last five years. His technical ground game paired with his fluid striking and well-rounded skills have brought him to the top of his division. Fernandes will now defend his title against a very strong competitor in Kevin Belingon.

Kevin Belingon of the famed Team Lakay stable in Baguio City, Philippines has long been one of the most exciting fighters in ONE Championship’s roster. Belingon possesses fearsome striking power brought about by his high-level Wushu background. His highlight reel of spectacular finishes has seen him victorious against the top fighters in his division, and he now looks to make the most out of his much-anticipated crack at ONE Championship gold when he takes on defending champion, Bibiano Fernandes.

Li Kai Wen of China is on a nifty three-fight win streak, clinching the Beijing Featherweight Tournament Championship with two wins in just one night and defeating opponent Nathan Ng by TKO in his most recent outing. An explosive finisher, Li brings electricity to the crowd with his fast-paced and powerful striking. He takes on Yang Sen in a matchup of Chinese featherweights.

Yang Sen enjoyed an eventful 2015, winning the second iteration of the Beijing Featherweight Tournament. His impeccable striking and well-calculated offense has brought him success inside the ONE Cage, as he looks to prove that Chinese fighters are truly world-class mixed martial artists. Yang will face off with compatriot Li Kai Wen in a battle of local martial arts superstars.

Finnish sensation, Toni “Dynamite” Tauru returns to the ONE Cage after challenging for the ONE Bantamweight World Championship against the reigning champion in his last bout. Tauru owns a stellar 10-2-1 MMA record with seven of his victories by submission. Although he fell short of his bid for a world title, Tauru will now look to get back on the board with a win over Muin Gafurov.

Muin Gafurov of Dushanbe, Tajikistan is an undefeated 19-year old MMA prospect. Gafurov was successful in his ONE Championship debut with a victory over the tough Casey Suire, and was victorious in his last outing with a different promotion. Of his nine victories, six have come by submission, making his battle with Toni Tauru a high-level matchup of grapplers.

Japanese MMA wildcard Riku Shibuya won the hearts of fans with his exciting, unorthodox style and powerful combinations. The 30-year old from Tokyo is a veteran of the fight game and is easily one of the most enjoyable fighters to watch. He will take on Roy Doliguez of the Philippines next in what should be an intense matchup.

Former professional boxer Roy Doliguez showed in his last fight that he is a force to be reckoned with. Displaying iron-clad willpower and determination, Doliguez dug deep to give fans a monstrous effort in challenging for the ONE Strawweight World Championship against eventual champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke. Despite the loss however, Doliguez proved he is a diamond in the rough with a gritty performance. He’ll now take on the erratic Riku Shibuya.

Sunoto is a kickboxing champion from Indonesia who has transitioned well into MMA. His well-rounded skills have given him a solid 3-1 record to start his MMA career and he looks to continue his winning ways against Taiwan’s Sung Ming Yen.

Sung Ming Yen of Hsinchu, Taiwan is one of the pioneers of mixed martial arts in his home country and is considered one of its best fighters. He is equally adept in both grappling and striking, and prides himself on his aggressive style. Sung is out to prove that mixed martial artists from Taiwan can go head-to-head against the best that Asia has to offer when he takes on Sunoto.

ONE WUJIE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS (CHANGSHA) will also feature the Changsha Bantamweight Tournament, showcasing a series of highly-talented local fighters to determine the tournament champion.

Tang De Fen will face 19-year old Zhou Biao in the Changsha Bantamweight Tournament Alternate Bout in what should be a solid matchup of rising stars.

The Changsha Bantamweight Tournament Semi-Finals will feature two national Freestyle Wrestling champions going head-to-head as “The Southern Eagle” Ma Hao Bin battles “Steam Engine” Wu Ting Shen. In the other semi-final bout, Cai Chang Bo challenges national Greco-Roman Wrestling champion Bu Huo You Ga to determine who moves in to the tournament final.

New opponent, same approach for reigning champ Felix

LINCOLN, R.I. (Dec. 31st, 2015) — Every fighter, whether it’s boxing or mixed martial arts, knows the opponent he or she originally agrees to fight might not be the same opponent standing across the way once that first bell finally rings.

Nothing is written in stone. The sport is way too unpredictable to take anything for granted, so a fighter is always mentally prepared for an unexpected, unwelcomed change.

Providence’s Luis Felix (14-8, 5 KOs), the reigning CES MMA Lightweight Champion, has dealt with it before and is dealing with it again as he continues preparing for a new opponent less than two weeks from his 2016 AXS TV debut Friday, Jan. 8th at Twin River Casino in the main event of “CES MMA XXXII.”

Instead of defending his 155-pound title in a five-round bout against former Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) standout Waylon Lowe, Felix will face Bellator vet Ryan Sanders (9-7, 1 KO) of Bangor, Maine, in a three-round non-title bout at a catch weight of 160 pounds thanks to an injury last week that forced Lowe to withdraw from the fight.

The rounds and weight aren’t the only difference; Lowe and Sanders are polar opposites on the tale of the tape, presenting somewhat of a unique challenge for Felix in his first fight since August.

“We went from a 5-foot-7 lefty who throws no kicks and is more of a slow-paced fighter who picks his shots and wrestles to a guy who’s 6-1, a righty, throws everything at you except the kitchen sink and comes at you nonstop,” Felix said with a laugh.

“We couldn’t have picked someone more completely different, but it is what it is.”

The mental preparation is only half the battle. Felix suffered a hamstring injury in his rematch against Julian Lane in August, forcing him to adjust his game plan midway through and endure several months of rehabilitation in the aftermath.

At this stage of his career, with a three-fight win streak on national television putting him on the cusp of something major, Felix can’t afford to his ease his way back in or hand-pick who he chooses to fight. He knows he has to strike while the iron’s hot, so he’s willing to accept the new challenge, even if he’s not 100 percent physically.

“Now we have to switch everything around and do everything from the opposite side,” Felix said. “I have to throw more kicks. Coming off the hamstring injury, it’ll be a little different. It’s definitely a challenge.”

Felix estimates he’s anywhere between “85 … 90” percent. The injury occurred at the end of the first round and worsened in the third. By the fourth, he stopped throwing kicks and simply relied on his experience – and adrenaline – to carry him through the final two rounds.

“I thought I’d do six weeks of therapy. I ended up doing 10,” he said. “I was hesitant when I got back to training, probably more of a mental thing, and never really got back to 100 percent where I wanted to be, but now we have to let it all out.

“I can’t afford to be one-dimensional with this kid.”

Sanders, a 16-fight vet, boasts wins over former CES MMA title challenger Lucas Cruz and UFC standout Marcus Davis. Jan. 8th will be Felix’s fifth consecutive fight on national television. After losing his AXS TV debut to Lane, he’s won three in a row and nine of 11 overall dating back to 2010.

“This is what drives me,” he said. “Standing there in front of the nation, going into battle, I’ve done it before. This stage is what really drives me to go out and compete and bring out my best.”

Outside the cage, Felix has found another driving force. He recently began an after-school teaching program for underprivileged youths, mostly in the high school age range, where the students receive half a credit toward graduation for participating in the 10-week course. His first wave of students finished up in December and he plans on expanding into two Providence-area middle schools for his next session beginning at the end of the month.

When he wasn’t fighting, Felix was always teaching, dating as far back as his high school days at Cranston East in Rhode Island when he helped mentor would-be middle school wrestlers, but the responsibility of reaching out to the youth has taken on a new meaning as his own fame and celebrity status continues to grow.

“It helps you grow as a person, a human being,” Felix said. “Some of these kids are underprivileged. They come from different situations. Not everyone opens up right away, but as the program went on, I got to know a little more about these kids.

“Teaching MMA and wrestling is something I’ve done my whole life, but the relationships you build with those kids make you realize your situation and where you’re at and the difference you can make. It’s a humbling experience. It helps you appreciate life.

“I’ve always been myself. I never felt like I had to change too much to be a role model. I’ve just felt like keeping it real with people has always been right for me.”

As he prepares for his Jan. 8th return, Felix is once again the student, forced to learn on the fly as he adjusts to a new opponent. Differences aside, it’ll be business as usual once the bell rings.

Johnsbury, Vt., while red-hot featherweight Kody Nordby (5-3) of Cumberland, R.I., fresh off an outstanding win over Dinis Paiva at “CES MMA XXXI,” returns to the main card in a three-round bout against Derek Shorey (3-2, 2 KOs) of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, a last-minute replacement for Zech Lange.

Rounding out the main card, undefeated bantamweight Rico DiSciullo (5-0, 2 KOs) of Peabody, Mass., faces 16-fight vet Chino Duran (8-8, 4 KOs) of Homestead, Fla. Fresh off a win over Jake Constant, DiSciullo is making his fourth appearance with CES and his second on the televised main card while Duran aims for his third win in four fights.

The preliminary card features six exciting bouts, starting with a featherweight showdown between unbeaten Manny Bermudez (3-0, 1 KO) of Abington, Mass., and Evan Parker (5-3, 1 KO) of nearby Worcester.

Title-holders Felix, Freitas headline CES MMM XXXII

LINCOLN, R.I. (Dec. 30th, 2015) — A new year could lead to the crowning of a new champion when CES MMA kicks off its highly anticipated 2016 AXS TV Fight Series with “CES MMA XXXII” on Friday, Jan. 8th, 2016 at Twin River Casino.

One of the sport’s best kept secrets, reigning CES MMA welterweight champion Gil Freitas (18-5, 6 KOs) makes his first title defense in a five-round bout against Cincinnati’s Chris Curtis (12-4, 4 KOs), who aims to become the third Ohio-born fighter to capture one of the promotion’s titles, joining a list that includes UFC vets Julian Lane and Dominique Steele.

Freitas’ belt and five-fight win streak are on the line. The stretch began in 2012 and continued in October with an impressive submission win over Massachusetts vet Chip Pollard, one of the region’s top strikers, for the then-vacant CES MMA title. The 5-foot-10 Curtis has won three consecutive fights and five of his last six dating back to August of 2013.

The 2016 series debut also features the long-awaited return of reigning CES MMA lightweight champion Luis Felix (14-8, 5 KOs) of Providence, who puts his three-fight win streak on the line in the main event against Ryan Sanders (9-7, 1 KO) of Bangor, Maine.

Under the promotional guidance of CES, Felix has gone from a fledgling MMA journeyman to a network television star, winning 9 of his last 11 fights since starting his career 5-6. He’ll make his fifth appearance on AXS TV next Friday against the durable Sanders, a former Bellator vet who boasts wins over former CES title challenger Lucas Cruz and ex-Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) standout Marcus Davis. Felix’s original opponent, Waylon Lowe, withdrew due to injury.

Of their combined 23 wins, 17 have come via knockout. Jan. 8th will be Diekmann’s fourth appearance with CES MMA.

Rising featherweight Kyle Bochniak (5-0, 2 KOs) makes his second appearance on the televised main card as he puts his undefeated record on the line against Taylor Trahan (5-4) of St.

ONE CHAMPIONSHIP™ REVOLUTIONIZES MMA WITH NEW WEIGH-IN PROGRAM; BANS WEIGHT-CUTTING BY DEHYDRATION

23 December 2015 – Singapore: Asia’s largest sports media property, ONE Championship™ (ONE), has announced that the organization will lead the global MMA industry by banning weight-cutting by dehydration and instituting a new set of regulations and policies governing the weigh-in procedures and contracted weight limits. The new program, which is the first of its kind for combat sports, is focused on athlete safety by introducing “walking-weight” competition via multiple weigh-ins and tests before and during fight week, including 3 hours before an event begins.

Athletes will now compete at their “walking-weight”, which will be determined by a robust system that will track his/her weight on a regular basis throughout the period that the athlete is contracted to ONE. Full details of the new weigh-in program can be found on www.ONEFC.com.

The revolutionary weigh-in program was established after thorough discussions and recommendations by ONE Championship’s medical and competition team, consisting of Chief Doctor Dr. Warren Wang, Chief Medical Advisor Dr. James Okamoto, Vice President Mr. Rich Franklin, Vice President of Operations & Competition Mr. Matt Hume, Global Athlete Services & Competition Director Mr. Richard Auty and China Athlete Services & Competition Director Mr. Vaughn Anderson.

CEO of ONE Championship™ Victor Cui stated, “ONE Championship has paved the way for MMA in Asia and we have always been at the forefront of innovation for the sport. By banning weight cutting by dehydration, we are leading the way globally for enhanced safety standards for professional MMA athletes. We believe that through the implementation of this new weigh-in program, our fighters will enjoy a safer and healthier life inside and outside of the cage. I invite the other two major global MMA organizations, Bellator and UFC, to follow in our footsteps to protect athletes and to eliminate the process of weight cutting by dehydration.”

Vice President of ONE Championship™ Rich Franklin stated, “Today I’m proud to have been involved with developing the new weigh-in program for ONE athletes. As a former MMA champion, I’ve been through the process of weight-cutting by dehydration countless times and I know first-hand how it affects an athlete physically. I personally understand the importance of safety and competing at your very best as a professional MMA athlete and after reviewing the new regulations and policies governing the weigh-in procedures and contracted weight limits, this new program does both for our athletes.”

Vice President of Operations & Competition of ONE Championship™ Matt Hume stated, “The safety of our athletes is the top priority of ONE. After bringing in top medical officials from both the USA and Asia, we believe we have put together the best possible weigh-in program in combat sports. This program will revolutionize the way weigh-ins are conducted around the world and we look forward to the positive outcome it will have on safety standards related to weight-cutting globally.”

The new program will commence from January 2016 and will be applied to all athletes competing under the ONE banner.

WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING HEADS TO FEDEX FORUM IN MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE SATURDAY, JANUARY 23, LIVE ON NBCSN

LAS VEGAS (December 21, 2015) –World Series of Fighting (WSOF.com) will kick off the New Year with its 27th live event and first trip ever to the FedExForum in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday, Jan. 23, live on NBCSN at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

In the WSOF27 lightweight (155 pounds) main event, Mike “The Martian” Ricci will square off with Caros “The Future” Fodor while, in the light heavyweight (205 pounds) co-main event, heavy-handed finisher Teddy Holder will battle undefeated Shamil Gamzatov.

“We are excited to make our debut in Memphis thanks, in great part, to V3 Fights, which has a stellar reputation for putting together great events in that market and is helping us bring our brand of live, world-class MMA action to new fans,” said World Series of Fighting CEO Carlos Silva.

Tickets for the event start at just $39.99, and are on sale at WSOF.com, all Ticketmaster locations, ticketmaster.com, the FedExForum Box Office, or by phone at (800) 745-3000.

Mike Ricci vs. Caros Fodor

The 29-year-old Ricci (11-4) of Montreal, Quebec, Canada will enter the World Series of Fighting decagon cage on a three-fight win streak after scoring a highlight reel KO on Joe Condon with a head kick in the first round (2:41) of their matchup in the quarterfinal stage matchup of the WSOF25 one-night, eight-man tournament.

Fodor (10-4) of Kirkland, Wash. is looking to notch his third consecutive win in his World Series of Fighting debut after concluding a successful, four-fight run in Asia. The 31-year-old protégé of Matt Hume and brother of fellow World Series of Fighting competitor and costumed superhero Phoenix Jones exploded onto the national MMA scene in 2010 when he ran to five consecutive wins with the now defunct Strikeforce promotion.

Teddy Holder vs. Shamil Gamzatov

Holder (9-2) of Bartlett, Tenn. is a former high school football star turned MMA machine who made his first big mark in the sport at WSOF19 on March 28 after being bumped up from the event’s undercard to a co-main event matchup with established star Thiago Silva, on the day of the event due to the withdrawal of Silva’s original opponent, Matt Hamill, from the matchup.

Holder, whose nine-career victories have all come by way of (T)KO or submission, scored an upset, first round (2:00) TKO on Silva with a barrage of punches.

The unbeaten Gamzatov (9-0) of Makhachkala, Russia will make his debut in the U.S. after finishing all of his professional opponents to date in either the first or second round. The 25-year-old is the number two ranked light heavyweight in the Ukraine and the number 24 ranked light heavyweight in Russia.

Additional matchups for WSOF27 will be announced soon.

DARRION CALDWELL SET FOR ‘BELLATOR MMA 151’ MAIN EVENT DEBUT AGAINST JOE WARREN AT WINSTAR WORLD CASINO & RESORT ON MARCH 4

SANTA MONICA, CALIF. (December 18, 2015) – The main event of Bellator MMA’s return to WinStar World Casino & Resort in Thackerville, OK., on March 4 will feature undefeated Darrion Caldwell (8-0) challenging former two-division world champion and the self-proclaimed “Baddest Man on the Planet” Joe Warren (13-4).
Tickets for “Bellator 151: Warren vs. Caldwell” go on sale this coming Monday, December 21 and start at just $45. You can purchase tickets at the WinStar World Casino and Resort Box Office, as well as Ticketmaster.com and Bellator.com. Doors for the event open at 5:00 p.m. CT local time, with the first contest taking place one hour later.

“Bellator 151: Warren vs. Caldwell” airs live and free on SPIKE at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, while preliminary bouts will stream live on Bellator.com and The Bellator Mobile App.. Additional bouts will be announced in the coming weeks.

With five impressive outings in a little over a year and a half under the Bellator MMA umbrella, it was only a matter of time before “The Wolf” found himself in a position to compete for a world title. There is still work to be done though, and the next stop on the road to championship gold goes through a man who has held Marcos Galvao’s belt already. A standout on the wrestling team at NC State University, the 27-year-old Caldwell most recently submitted Shawn Bunch via rear-naked choke in the first frame, adding to his tally of finishes (4). Initially a featherweight, Caldwell looks much more comfortable now at 135-pounds and as he proclaimed during a recent interview, “I foresee myself competing against Joe [Warren] with a No. 1 contender shot on the line, sooner rather than later.”

Warren has done just about it all under the Bellator MMA banner, winning titles at featherweight and bantamweight during his nearly six year promotional tenure. Now, Warren has his sights set on another run with the 135-pound title, a belt he lost during an intense encounter with Galvao early in 2015. A 2006 Pan American and World Champion in Greco-Roman competition, the 39-year-old will test himself against a young competitor who excels in the same skillset that Warren has used to his advantage for most of his career, wrestling. Will a win for “The Baddest Man on the Planet” propel him to a title shot against the winner of Galvao-Dantas 2 a week prior? Tune into SPIKE on March 4 to find out.

M-1 Global signs Heavyweight Alexander Volkov, Volkov vs. Smoldaraev M-1 Challenge heavyweight title fight

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (December 15, 2015) – M-1 Global has announced its signing of Russian heavyweight sensation Alexander “Drago” Volkov (24-6-0, M-1: 8-3-0) to an exclusive promotional contract.

Volkov will battle Denis Smoldarev (11-1-0, M-1: 7-1-0) February 19 for the vacant M-1 Challenge heavyweight championship at M-1 Challenge 64 in Moscow, Russia.

The 27-year-old puncher from Moscow returns to the organization in which he made his professional mixed-martial-arts debut April 19, 2009, needing only 80-seconds to stop Nikolay Pleshokov in the second stage of the M-1 Challenge 2009. Volkov went on to capture top honors in the finals of the M-1 Challenge 2009, defeating Ibragim Magomedov for the Russian Team Championships.

The 6′ 7″, 235-pound Volkov fought under the M-1 Global banner for the next two years, highlighted November 20, 2011 by his opening round punch-out of Arsen Abdulkerimov in front of 20,000 fans at M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Monson.

At that point, Volkov had won 14 of 17 pro MMA fights and the popular Russian fighter opened 2012 with an impressive decision win over former UFC heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez.

Volkov had another victory before heading to the United States in order to test himself in Bellator competition. He won his inaugural Bellator fight against powerful Brett Rogers, by decision at Bellator 75, in the Bellator Season Seven Heavyweight Tournament.

Two Bellator fights later, Volkov had extended his win streak to 10 in a row, improving overall to 19-3-0 via five-round decision over Richard Hale to capture the vacant Bellator Heavyweight Championship, as well as finish first in the Bellator Season Seven Heavyweight Tournament in Hammond, Indiana, USA.

In his first fight of 2013, Volkov lost his Bellator heavyweight title in his first defense, as fellow countryman Vitaly Minakov recorded a first-round knockout in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA.

However, Volkov rebounded with three straight wins in the Bellator Season 10 Heavyweight Tournament, defeating Bulgarian great Blaygoy Ivanov in the final by way of a second-round rear-naked choke hold. Ivanov is best known, perhaps, for defeating living legend Fedor Emelianenko in the semifinals on his way to winning the 2008 World Sambo Championships.

Feared as one of the most prolific strikers in MMA today, 17 of Volkov’s 24 overall victims to date were knocked out.

Volkov (pictured above to left) makes his M-1 Global return against Smoldarev, of Estonia, whose only loss as a professional was to Marcin Tybura (13-1-0, M-1: 7-1-0), who abdicated his M-1 Challenge heavyweight title to reportedly continue his career in the UFC. Tybura made his first successful M-1 Challenge heavyweight title defense November 24, 2014, defeating Smoldarev by third-round submission (choke), at M-1 Challenge 54 in Beijing, China.

The 25-year-old Smoldarev (shown above in the black trunks) has impressive victories against Ante Delia, Maro Perak, Ahmed Sultanov and Shaban Ka. Smoldarev is also a physical specimen, standing 6′ 5″ and weighing close to 270 pounds.

M-1 Challenge 64 will be streamed live from Moscow in high definition on www.M1Global.TV. Viewers will be able to watch the preliminary fights and main card by logging on to register at www.M1Global.TV. Fans may watch all of the action on their computers, as well as on Android and Apple smart phones and tablets.

marco-huck7
Marco Huck will meet Ola Afoloabi in a their 4th fight on February 27th in Germany, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“In my last fight, I didn’t show what I [am] able to do. I beat myself against Glowacki. It won’t happen again,” Huck said. “I’m getting ready with my new coach for the fight on Feb. 27. I will be in top condition this time. Ola and I fought three very hard and close fights in the past, which were all decided in the last rounds. But now I want to end this chapter with an early KO victory and end it once and for all.”

“We’re off to Germany to fight Marco Huck for the fourth time,” Afolabi wrote on social media. “I guess he’s not too fond of fighting outside of his hometown. Just a job to me. I’ll fight him on the moon.”

Afolabi later added, “I am very pleased to fight against Huck again. Our previous battles were all very exciting and close. This time though there is a big difference: I am the reigning world champion and he is the challenger. I will defend my title because I am at the peak of my career. Huck will get what Rakhim Chakhkiev got.”

Vera opened the bout by dropping Cheng with a counter left hook after Cheng was caught over-extending on a missed punch. Vera followed up with a high kick that landed flush, sending Cheng down to the canvas. From there, Vera rained down hammer fists to force a stoppage.

Reece “Lightning” McLaren of Queensland, Australia shocked the hometown crowd by beating Mark “Mugen” Striegl by submission in the second round of a bantamweight contest. McLaren invested in leg kicks early, slowing down an aggressive yet composed Striegl who was determined to use his wrestling to take McLaren to the ground. Striegl dropped McLaren with a short right elbow followed up by a technical ground kick, but failed to finish off the Australian. In the final round, McLaren had just enough to outlast Striegl, as he locked in a rear naked choke to earn the victory.

Toquero was awarded with a technical knockout victory after Li failed to answer the call for round three.

Irina Mazepa of St. Petersburg, Russia barrelled through her opponent to score her second victory inside the ONE Cage, defeating former women’s boxing world champion Ana “Hurricane” Julaton. In the end, Mazepa owned the advantage in both the stand-up and in the clinch, doing just enough to receive a unanimous decision from all three judges.

Female strawweights “Unstoppable” Angela Lee of Singapore and Lena Tkhorevska of Poland put on an amazing show of high-level grappling for fight fans in attendance. The Singaporean Lee started off by scoring on an impressive side suplex in the first round, followed by various submission attempts while Tkhorevska was preoccupied with defense. In the second round, Lee was able to take Tkhorevska’s back, sinking in a deep rear naked choke to end the bout.

A determined Bruno Pucci of Brazil made his re-emergence in ONE Championship a successful one by defeating previously undefeated featherweight Anthony Engelen of the Netherlands. Pucci dominated the entire bout, scoring on two slams to take Engelen effortlessly down to the mat. In the second round, Pucci slipped a rear naked choke deep enough to force Engelen to tap out. Pucci, overcome with emotion, clinched a long-awaited victory in round two.

Brazilian flyweight Alex Silva also made a successful return to the ONE Cage after more than a two-year break to defeat Ruel Catalan of the Philippines by submission. Catalan tried to use his long reach to keep Silva from closing the distance, as Silva looked constantly for the takedown. A scramble found Catalan in top position as he unloaded punches, but Silva was able to reverse, quickly locking in a knee bar to seal the deal.

17-year old Christian Lee, younger brother of female strawweight standout Angela Lee, emerged victorious in his ONE Championship and professional mixed martial arts debut, stopping game opponent David Meak of Australia to kick off ONE: SPIRIT OF CHAMPIONS. Lee got off to a fast start, unloading combinations while aggressively attacking Meak who tried his best to defend. After a barrage of punches, the referee stepped in to call a halt to the contest.
