LOS ANGELES, December 6 – Before British superstar Amir “King” Khan makes his ring return against Carlos Molina at the legendary Los Angeles Sports Arena on Saturday, December 15 live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, LA’s own IBF Bantamweight World Champion Leo “Terremoto” Santa Cruz will face unbeaten Alberto “Metro” Guevara in a 12-round bout that will air as a special boxing feature live on SHOWTIME BOXING on CBS beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET/1:30 p.m. PT.

Perhaps boxing’s most exciting fighter, IBF Bantamweight World Champion Leo “Terremoto” Santa Cruz (22-0-1, 13 KO’s) is a thrill machine with a warrior’s heart, making him a fan favorite wherever he goes. In the midst of a breakout year, the 24-year-old from Los Angeles won his first world title in June, beating Vusi Malinga, and he has since defended it with knockout victories of Eric Morel and Victor Zaleta, making him the perfect candidate to be aired on network television.

Unbeaten in 16 professional fights, Mazatlan, Mexico’s Alberto Guevara (16-0, 6 KO’s) is expected to give Santa Cruz a tough battle in their 12-round clash and with the high stakes involved, expect “Metro” to come out with guns blazing on December 15. A three-year pro, Guevara is taking a big step up against the world champion, but is ready for the fight of his life.

A proud native of South El Monte, California, 20-year-old southpaw Joseph Diaz Jr. was a 2011 U.S. National Champion at featherweight and winner of his opening bout at the London Olympics earlier this year, garnering him a devoted fan following. Now ready to take the next step in what is expected to be a spectacular professional career, Diaz makes his pro debut on December 15 in a4-round fight against an opponent to be determined.

A native of Mexicali, Mexico now making his home in Los Angeles, Alfredo Angulo (21-2, 18 KOs) made his long awaited return in November after an emotional year out of the ring, but “Perro” delivered on the promise he has shown over the years as he took just 56 seconds to knock out Raul Casarez. Now determined to make up for lost time, the 30-year-old power puncher is back again and looking for another knockout win, this one over 20-year-old Tijuana product Jorge Silva. Silva (19-2-2, 15 KO’s) has some dynamite in his gloves as well, and after two straight wins and a draw with Japan’s Yoshihiro Kamegai, he’s got all the momentum he needs to score the biggest victory of his career.

The hottest prospect in the heavyweight division, Tuscaloosa, Alabama’s Deontay Wilder (25-0, 25 KO’s) has left no one in his path standing after winning a Bronze Medal at the 2008 Olympics. Standing at 6-foot-7, the “Bronze Bomber” has not only shown power in his victories over Damon McCreary, Owen Beck, and Kertson Manswell, but his charisma and personality have captured a huge fanbase for the 27-year-old that he hopes to grow even bigger on December 15.

One of the few heavyweights that match Wilder with not only an unbeaten record, but also in size, Pensacola, Florida’s 6-foot-7 Kelvin “Price is Right” Price (13-0, 6 KO’s) will present some difficulties for the former Olympian that he has yet to see in his pro career. A six year veteran who got a late start in the sport, the 37-year old is best known for spoiling the perfect record of hot prospect Tor Hamer in 2010. He’s ready to play that spoiler role again when he faces Wilder.

Akron, Ohio’s Shawn Porter (20-0, 14 KO’s) is an exciting welterweight who is beginning to make his move on the elite in his division and is doing it with a two-fisted, aggressive attack that none of his opponents have been able to handle. A decorated amateur and 2008 U.S. Olympic team alternate, the 25-year-old Porter won the NABF welterweight title by beating Hector Munoz in 2010 and he added the NABO crown in July with his hard fought win over the respected Alfonso Gomez.

The fighting pride of Coachella, California, Julio “The Kidd” Diaz (40-7, 29 KO’s) is a former world lightweight champion who has fought it out with Jose Luis Castillo, Angel Manfredy, Jesus Chavez, Juan Diaz and Herman Ngoudjo. After a year-long break and a move up to welterweight, the 32-year-old Diaz has looked better than ever in knocking out Henry Aurad and Hector Sanchez in 2012. With a win over Porter, he can move back into title contention.

Unbeaten as a professional, former amateur star Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez (13-0, 10 KO’s) made a triumphant return to the squared circle after nearly a year off when he stopped veteran Manuel Leyva in three rounds on November 3. Now looking to stay busy and pile up some more wins on the way to a welterweight title shot, the East LA battler will meet up with Tijuana veteran Pavel Miranda (17-8-1, 8 KOs) on December 15.

Winner of two bouts in the 2012 Olympics as a member of Team USA, 22-year-old Dallas native Errol Spence Jr. (1-0, 1 KO) may have been the most impressive of his fellow teammates in his pro debut on November 9, as he showed off a wide variety of skills and poise before dispatching Jonathan Garcia in the third round. Now he’ll look to repeat that feat in another four round affair against an opponent to be named later this month.

22-year-old Marcus Browne (1-0, 1 KO) fought with a heavy heart during his pro debut on November 9 after his native Staten Island, New York was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Despite the devastation back home, with the heart and resolve that took him to a National Amateur Championship, three Golden Gloves titles and a spot on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team, Browne took out unbeaten Codale Ford in three rounds to earn his first professional win. On December 15, he looks for win number two against an opponent to be determined in a four round bout.

The evening session of boxing will begin with Houston, Texas’ Jerren Cochran (6-0, 3 KO’s) against an opponent to be named in a four round feather fight followed by an eight-round junior middleweight battle between Oxnard, California’s Hugo “The Boss” Centeno (16-0, 8 KO’s) and Allen Conyers (12-7, 9 KO’s) of the Bronx, New York.

Holly Holm documentary shooting Friday night’s Holm vs. Prazak World Title Fight At Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (December 6, 2012) – Veteran boxing promoter Lenny Fresquez has announced that Lerner Film is shooting a documentary about 12-time, three division world champion Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (31-2-3, 9 KOs).

Director Arnie Lerner will have a film crew working tomorrow night’s Fresquez Productions-presented “Fire And Ice” show, featuring Holm versus WIBA super featherweight champion Diana Prazak (11-1, 7 KOs) in the 10-round main event fighting for the IBA and WBF light welterweight titles, at Route 66 Casino Hotel in Albuquerque.

“I choose subjects for my documentaries that are unique and have inspirational personalities,” Lerner explained why he picked Holm to film a documentary. “I look for someone who lights up the screen to propel their passions. I met Holly and she is so passionate about what she does. She’s confident in her talents, yet, not arrogant at all. She’s an elite athlete who has a sweet-hearted personality. The purity of what she does is undeniable.

“The other side (of the documentary) is the complex industry of boxing, particularly women’s boxing, is in itself. The contradictions in her sport and career are fascinating. Holly represents a completely different way in terms of choices she faces every day. This story is bigger than just boxing, especially the issues faced by women in sports, which will be magnified and brought to a new level. The challenges she faces will be taken serious.”

The relatively quiet, unassuming Holm (31-2-3, 9 KOs) is the pound-for-pound Queen of Boxing who has dominated from the 140 through 154-pound weight classes having defeated the likes of Ann Sophie Mathis, Christy Martin, Mary Jo Sanders, Mia St. John, Myriam Lamare, Jane Couch, Duda Yankovich and Chevelle Hallback (twice).

“It’s exciting to do this,” Holm said about being the subject of the aforementioned documentary. “I’m quiet but, if doing this can help women’s boxing, and maybe help me get a few sponsors, it is well worth it. There are a lot of good reasons. Down the road it will be something I can share with my kids and grand-kids. They’re aware I don’t like distractions, unlike some fighters who like distractions to help them perform, but I only fight a few nights a year, so I’m sure it won’t be a distraction for me.”

World Champion Austin Trout to Attend “Fire And Ice”

WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, who is coming off last week’s impressive win by decision over Miquel Cotto, will attend tomorrow night’s show.

—————————————————————————————————————

Holm was originally supposed to fight four-time world champion Myrian Lamare in a rematch, but Lamare withdrew due to injury and was replaced by Prazak. Holm explained that the change in opponents isn’t a problem. “We both had plenty of time for a change. If it were an issue, it wouldn’t be just for one of us, rather both fighters. But the change of opponents came 3-4 weeks out and she was training to fight on the card against another opponent. She’s had a full training camp and so have I. I’m sure that she’s coming hard to rock-n-roll.”

Holm will be fighting at home, where she regularly sells-out with crowds exceeding 3000, something very few female fighters in the world can claim. “It’s awesome that they’re there to support me,” Holly remarked. “It can be a little emotional. I say all of the time that I wouldn’t be here without my fans. They’re loyal and there are a lot of them. It feels great and I don’t want to let them down. They’re legitimate supporters. It makes me feel like all of the hard work has paid off. It’s almost surreal having all of them there for me. Most people in the world will never feel like I do when I enter the ring. It’s personal and I never take them for granted.”

Supporting “Fire And Ice” fights will showcase local boxers such as light welterweight Matthew “Champ” Baca (1-0, 1KO) vs. Derek Perez (pro debut) in a four-round bout, female light welterweight Victoria “La Reina de la Guerra” Cisneros (8-13-2, 3 KOs) vs. “Merciless” Mary McGee (19-1, 10 KOs) in a six-round match, bantamweight Raymond “Hollewood” Montez (5-2, 3 KOs) vs. Tony Valdez (6-6-3, 6 KOs) in a much-anticipated eight-round rematch, and amateur standout Jason Sanchez makes his pro debut in a four-round fight vs. featherweight Gene Perez (1-0). Former National Golden Gloves champion Siju Shabazz faces Ricky Villafuerte in the opening four-round fight in a match-up of pro-debut fighters.

Roach smiling at Pacquiao’s chances for a decisive win over Marquez

LAS VEGAS – Distractions and Manny Pacquiao have been inseparable for at least a year. But it’s beginning to look as if he has discarded that piece of troublesome baggage.

The distracted Pacquiao was gone Thursday. In his place, there was the engaging personality remembered for entering the ring with the smile of a kid headed to a few rounds on the playground.

“He’s having fun,’’ Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach said before a formal news conference at the MGM Grand. “When he’s having fun, he’s hard to beat.’’

Little about a rivalry just a few days from a fourth fight, also at the MGM Grand, looks like much fun. Through 36 rounds, Pacquiao has the edge with two controversial decisions and a draw. But instead of celebration, there’s been controversy. Marquez argues the ledger should read 3-0 in his favor.

“He claims he won,’’ Pacquiao said. “He needs to prove something. I wanted to give him that chance. Maybe he can prove something.’’

The momentum, at least, seems to be on Marquez’ side, especially if the rivalry stretches to 48 rounds in an HBO pay-per-view bout. Much of the public agrees with Marquez, enough perhaps to finally swing the scorecards in his favor.

“My motivation is that I want them to raise my hand in the ring,’’ said Marquez, who showed up at the interview session in a crowded lounge off the casino floor looking edgy in a down jacket that was zipped all the way up to his scarred chin. “I don’t want people to just say, ‘You really beat him.’

“I want them to know that I beat him.’’

For Pacquiao, there might be only one way to do that:

By knockout.

But can he? In 2004, Pacquiao knocked Marquez down three times in the first round. Yet, Marquez managed to recover, rally and fight to a draw. Both have moved up the scale, from featherweight to lightweight for the first rematch and 144 pounds for the third fight. Along the way, there’s speculation that Pacquiao lost some power, or at least enough of it to cut his chances at stopping Marquez from good to negligible.

But Roach says Pacquiao was still an evolving fighter in 2004, meaning he didn’t possess the right hand he developed against David Diaz in 2008. Before their third fight in November, 2011, there were Pacquiao’s well-documented distractions, including marital problems and political campaigns.

“I still say Marquez hasn’t seen the best Manny,’’ Roach said. “This time he will.’’

Evidence of that, Roach said, came in training at the Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, Calif. Pacquiao knocked down sparring partners four times. There were zero knockdowns in training for Pacquaio’s controversial loss to Tim Bradley. There were none in camp for his majority decision over Pacquiao about 13 months ago. Pacquiao hasn’t knocked down a sparring partner since training for his 12th-round stoppage of Miguel Cotto in 2009.

“Manny said he wanted to go back to the Manny of 2004,’’ Roach said. “I wasn’t sure that was possible. But he’s had four knockdowns in training. He’s on fire right now.’’

But Marquez has found a way to cool that fire with counter-punching that interrupts pace and prevents the instinctive Pacquiao from getting into a rhythm, an unstoppable roll. There’s also the simple issue of Marquez’ muscle-bound upper-body, thanks to controversial strength coach Angel Heredia.

Heredia, who joined Marquez for the third fight, testified in the Balco case that he provided performance-enhancers to Olympic track-and-field medalists. Heredia’s presence raises inevitable questions. They were there in 2011 and they are back a year later. Marquez, annoyed at all of the questioning, has told the media he is prepared to undergo testing. In the PED swamp, however, there are always rumors and suspicions. Ask Lance Armstrong.

Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran introduced Marquez in a way that only makes you wonder about the relationship with Heredia.

“Built like Hulk,’’ Beltran said.

It might be hard to knock down Hulk. It’ll be harder to knock him out.

But Roach has his own theory.

“You put on a lot of muscle for a reason,’’ Roach said. “If he wants to exchange, that’ll be better for us.’’

Mayweather eyes May 4th return then September bout

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Pound for Pound King Floyd Mayweather will look to get back in the ring on May 4th and then again on September 14th which are the two most desirable dates on the boxing calender as they fall on Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day.

“Floyd has told us that he is fighting twice in 2013 with the first date being May 4 — Cinco De Mayweather — and the second date being Sept. 14,” said Maweather’s adviser Leonard Ellerbe.

“Mayweather Promotions is looking forward to these two gigantic Floyd Mayweather events in 2013, and we are in ongoing discussions with our promotional partner, Richard Schaefer (chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions) in finalizing the opponent and other aspects of the upcoming promotion.”

Ellerbe said Mayweather told him and fellow adviser Al Haymon in a recent telephone conversation to begin planning the May fight.

“He told me and Al this is what he is doing,” Ellerbe said.

“He’s been in the gym. Floyd is always keeping his body in shape doing something because he’s a great athlete and that’s what great athletes do,” Ellerbe said.

No announcement on Mayweather’s opponent but the article painted a scenario where Mayweather could possibly face Robert Guerrero on the May 4th date and a showdown with Canelo Alvarez on the September date. That sceario could possibly see Alvarez fight as the chief support bout on May 4th

“That is still to be determined,” Ellerbe said of the weight and opponent. “He is just looking to come back in two gigantic fights in 2013 and continue to show why he is the best in boxing.”

“Floyd Mayweather has a plethora of options,” Ellerbe said. “Who doesn’t want to fight Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and make the most money they ever made in their career? You hit the lottery once you’ve become a Floyd Mayweather opponent.”

Three-Time World Champion Randall Bailey Looking for a few real fights

MIAMI (December 5, 2012) – Despite being 38 and coming off the loss of his International Boxing Federation (IBF) welterweight title belt by decision to Devon Alexander (24-1, 13 KOs), three-time, two division world champion Randall “KO King” Bailey (43-8, 37 KOs) isn’t ready just yet to hang-up his gloves for good. To the contrary, the Floridian is looking for, as he calls it, a few real fights against the likes of fellow sluggers Marcos Rene Maidana or Keith Thurman.

Bailey is open to fighting past and present world champions, top contenders, or leading prospects but, what this feared one-punch threat would really like is a fan-friendly showdown against a straight forward, power puncher.

“World title fights aren’t always the best fights,” he explained. “I want to be in entertaining fights, the ones TV networks want to pay for, and fans love to watch. If I had my choice, right now, it would be against Maidana or Thurman, even (Vyacheslav) Senchenko. They come forward and fight, rather than run around in a boring fight. I don’t really like fighting 12 rounds, so I’d rather not fight guys moving around to just win on points.

“In the Alexander fight, nothing really happened to me, other than a head-butt. He just caught me on a bad night. Some things are meant to be and other things aren’t meant to be. I watched that fight and I never, ever came that close to hitting somebody on the button, barely missing, over and over again. There will be other nights for me, I promise.”

“I know that we will see the real Randall Bailey in his next fight,” Bailey’s longtime manager Si Stern added. “I can’t wait.”

Bailey turned pro in 1996 and he won his first 21 pro fights, all by knockout, including his first world title in 1999, the World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) light welterweight championship against Carlos Gonzalez. Two successful title defenses followed for Randall against Hector Lopez and Rocky Martinez. In 2000, Bailey stopped Demetrio Ceballos in the third round to become the Interim World Boxing Association (“WBA”) light welterweight champion. Bailey has also knocked out top fighters such as Jackson Osei Bonsu, Juan Polo Perez, Harrison Cuello, Frankie Figueroa, Santos Pakau, Anthony Mora, and Mike Jones. His devastating knockout of Jones last June, which was for the IBF welterweight crown, should be nominated as a strong candidate for the 2012 KO of the Year award.

Bailey hasn’t thought about retiring. His 16-year professional career hasn’t produced real wars, physically speaking, and that, along with today’s advanced athletic training techniques and nutritional knowledge, allow him to be world-class competitor at what used to be an advanced age for boxers.

“I know what my limit is, what I’m still capable of doing,” Bailey said about retirement. “I’ve kept care of my body and live a good lifestyle. I’ll know when it’s time; nobody is in my shoes. I need to regroup with my team, straighten a few things out, and I’ll be back stronger than ever.”

JI-HOON KIM READY FOR BELTRAN THIS THURSDAY ON ESPN 2

PHILADELPHIA (December 5, 2012)—This Thursday a gigantic boxing weekend in Las Vegas kicks off with an important Lightweight tussle between two-world ranked fighters with major implications.

Exciting Ji-Hoon Kim (#3 IBF; #7 WBO) and Ray Beltran (#9 WBC) will fight a ten round battle for the NABF Lightweight crown that will be televised live from the Mirage Hotel on ESPN 2.

Kim of Goyang City, South Korea has a record of 24-7 with eighteen knockouts and is generally regarded and one of the most exciting fighters in the world.

Kim knows that at big win over Beltran puts him right back at the front of the line to compete for the Lightweight championship of the world.

In 2010, Kim lost a decision to Miguel Vazquez for the vacant IBF crown and a win on Thursday night could set up a rematch with the classy Mexican champion.

Ironically just two days later in Las Vegas, Vazquez will be defending his crown against undefeated Mercito Gesta as part of the Manny Pacquiao – Juan Manuel Marquez Pay-Per-View undercard.

“This is a very important fight for Ji-Hoon”, said Kim’s promoter Artie Pelullo of Banner Promotions.

“If he takes care of business on Thursday then we have some great options as he is the highest rated contender in the IBF. We would welcome the opportunity to fight WBO champion Ricky Burns for which we have talked to Frank Warren about that possible fight We would also set our sights on WBC champion Adrien Broner and obviously we would love a rematch with Vazquez. If Gesta wins, I think a fight with him would have be a tremendous action fight plus it be a very big fight that would draw a great amount of attention in Asia”

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we felt that in the best interest of all parties involved and the fans, that the best thing to do would be to postpone the card until Friday, December 21st,” said Chief Operating Officer of All Out Promotions, Renee Aiken.

All tickets purchases for Friday night’s card will be honored for the December 21st show. More information to follow shortly.

Benavidez withdraws from ESPN2 card

LAS VEGAS — Jose Benavidez Jr., unbeaten at junior-welterweight, withdrew from a scheduled bout Thursday night at The Mirage, because of concerns about further injury to his right hand, according to Jose Benavidez Sr., his father and trainer.

“When we come back, I just want us to be back at 100 percent,’’ his dad said.

Benavidez (17-0, 13 KOs) was nearly knocked out in the final seconds of an eight-round bout by Pavel Miranda (17-8-1, 5 KOs) on Oct. 13 at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on a card featuring Brandon Rios’ dramatic stoppage of Mike Alvarado in the likely Fight of the Year.

Benavidez, a Phoenix prospect, escaped with a unanimous decision, scoring almost exclusively with his accurate jab. He also appeared to tire in the seventh round, perhaps because he struggled to make weight, 140 pounds.

“Then, I think we were looking ahead to the next fight,’’ Jose Sr. said. “We didn’t work the right hand in that one, because I think we were thinking about that fight in December. Things have happened so fast since that last fight.’’

Initially, the 20-year-old Benavidez had hoped to fight on the undercard Saturday of the fourth bout between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez in an HBO pay-per-view event at the MGM Grand. Instead, Top Rank announced a few weeks ago that Benavidez would face Jesus Selig (15-1-1, 9 KOs) on a Dec. 6 card televised by ESPN2. Top Rank was surprised by Benavidez’s withdrawal.

Benavidez, who signed with Top Rank as a 17-year-old, underwent surgery in January on his right hand and wrist after aggravating an injury during a victory over Sammy Santana in November, 2011 on the undercard of Pacquiao’s controversial decision over Marquez in their third fight.

An MRI revealed an extra bone in the wrist, according to physicians. It was causing Benavidez pain. According to reports, a laser procedure removed the source of that pain. A damaged tendon also was repaired.

After a five-month layoff, Benavidez returned to the ring, fighting three times — a six-round unanimous decision over Josh Sosa (10-4, 5 KOs) in May, a fourth-round stoppage of Javier Loya (7-1, 6 KOs) in August and then Miranda.

Plans are now for him to fight again early next year, perhaps in February, his dad and manager Steven Feder said.

“I just told him to enjoy the Holidays, rest and get ready for next year,’’ Jose Sr. said.

Gutknecht confrontational, Braehmer relaxed

Eduard Gutknecht (24-1, 9 KOs) believes that Juergen Braehmer´s (38-2, 30
KOs) time is over. Today the current European Light Heavyweight Champion and
his mandatory challenger met for the first time since the announcement of
their upcoming clash in Berlin on February 2. The all-German affair will
take place at the Max-Schmeling-Halle and the winner will not only be able
to call himself the King of Europe but also gets a crack at the WBO World
Championship.

It was the Champion himself who had the first word at today´s official press
conference and he did not wait long to make his intentions clear. “I wanted
to fight him years ago while we were still at Universum,” said Gutknecht.
“Back then he was the European as well as the WBO World Champion. He was at
the top of the game. But in my opinion he has already peaked a long time ago
and his time in the spotlight is over. Of course, he wants another chance to
get back to where he was. But I’m the champion now and I won’t give him that
chance.”

Surprisingly his opponent of the night, Juergen Braehmer, did not really
respond to that provocative statement. Instead, he decided to tell the media
about his new training group headed by his old and new coach Karsten Roewer.
“My preparations with Karsten Roewer, who I already worked with during my
days as an amateur, are going really well,” said Braehmer. “I have a lot of
fun with the other guys of the group and that is exactly what I need. Having
fun while working hard motivates me.”

Gutknecht used that comment for another dig at the former champion. “I am
not a joker. I take this sport seriously.” And his coach Ulli Wegner
confirmed that there was not as much laughter in his camp. “We don’t have
that much fun in my group – the guys can have fun during their spare time.”

Towards the end of the press conference, the challenger did make one thing
clear. “When I am fully trained and in the right shape it is pretty much
impossible to stop me. Once again, I have the chance to become to European
Champion and after that the WBO World Champion. I will grab that opportunity
with both hands.”

Tickets for the big fight night on February 2 at the Max-Schemling-Halle in
Berlin can be purchased at www.eventim.de and www.boxen.com.

From Dane-Killer to Pain-Killer” – Kessler-Magee final press conference

With three days to go until the Nordic Fight Night at Jyske Bank BOXEN in Herning, Mikkel Kessler (45-2, 34 KOs) and WBA Super-Middleweight Champion Brian Magee (36-4-1, 25 KOs) held a crowded final press conference at the venue to talk about Saturday´s showdown. Here is what the two camps had to say.

Mikkel Kessler: “It´s great to be fighting in Herning again. I got two great wins here, against Perdomo and against Froch. The atmosphere is going to be fantastic and I will beat Magee on Saturday. He has knocked out Markussen and Larsen, I have briefly spoken to both of them, but there is not much to say because I know what I have to do. My team has prepared a good plan and we will get the title on Saturday.”

Brian Magee: “It´s good to be in Denmark and I look forward to Saturday. I have a lot of respect for Mikkel, he is a great fighter, but I am here to defend my belt. I am as ready as I have ever been and can´t wait to get it on.”

Kalle Sauerland (Promoter Kessler): “The stakes have never been higher for Mikkel, he really needs to win this one. For Denmark and for himself. Whoever has his arm raised on Saturday will have a lot of great options but there is only one person that can emerge victorious on Saturday and I am convinced it will be Mikkel. The stage is set, we expect a fantastic crowd of more than 10.000 fans who will all scream the Viking Warrior to another huge win in Herning.”

Pat Magee (Manager Magee): “Brian is at the very top of his game, he has just been promoted to world champion after 14 years of working his way up, so he will leave it all in the ring and give everything to defend his title. We respect Kessler, but we are here to clinch another victory on Danish soil. Brian has knocked out Mads Larsen and Rudy Markussen and now wants to add Kessler to his list of knock-outs. They call him the Dane-Killer for a reason.”

Jimmy Montoya (Kessler coach): “Brian Magee will not be called the Dane-Killer after Mikkel has been in the ring with him. Magee will need painkillers after the fight, he will go all the way from Dane-Killer to Pain-Killer! He is a good fighter and deserves to be champion, but Mikkel is in a different league and Magee will find out on Saturday.”

Bernado Checa (Magee coach): “It´s good to hear that Mikkel is ready and in his best ever shape. So there will be no excuses when Brian has beaten him.”

Georg Soerensen (CEO MCH Herning): “It´s a great honour to stage this fight at Jyske Bank BOXEN. We have had a lot of international superstars in town but hosting a fight of the Viking Warrior is always something very special. We are ready for a great night of boxing with a fantastic crowd.”

Tickets for the Nordic Fight Night at Jyske Bank BOXEN can be purchased at www.billetnet.dk.

Cohen Sends Congratulations to Boxing’s Newest Star

Promoter Greg Cohen of Greg Cohen Promotions sends his warmest congratulations to his fighter, WBA Super Welterweight World Champion and boxing’s newest superstar, Austin “No Doubt” Trout (26-0, 14 KOs).

With the world watching last Saturday night, Trout scored a mostly one-sided unanimous (117-111, 117-111 and 119-109) decision over multiple world champion Miguel Cotto at Madison Square Garden.

Cohen says he’s still on cloud nine. “Austin is a very special kid. To perform under those circumstances the way he did in front of 15,000 people who wanted him to lose. For him to block it out and rise to the occasion the way he did was a beautiful thing to be a part of.”

Cohen says it was a mix of factors that led him to put such stock and belief in a then-unknown fighter years ago when the pair began working together.

“I loved the way he boxed and I’ve always been a fan of how cool he is. He’s such an unflappable kid. His first defense was against David Lopez in Mexico and they tried to pull a fast one by using a very, very small ring. I told Austin I’d cancel the fight if he wanted and Austin’s reaction was ‘cancel the fight? A smaller ring means less room for him to run from me.’ That’s the attitude he has. I’ve always known he was special and now the world is going to jump on the bandwagon. To see Austin develop the way he did and win the world title and now to not only be a title holder but become a star. It’s a wonderful feeling and I’m so proud to be a part of it.”

Cohen says Team Trout’s next move isn’t determined yet, but knows for sure it’ll be lucrative for his man.

“We want to fight the biggest and the best. Floyd Mayweather Jr., Canelo Alvarez, Manny Pacquiao. There are plenty of fights in the division that Austin can make a lot of money and that television would be happy to put on. No matter what we end up doing, things will be good for Team Trout from here on in. it’s a very nice position to be in.”

MIGUEL COTTO vs. AUSTIN TROUT SCORES RECORD RATINGS FOR SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®

NEW YORK (Dec. 4, 2012)-Saturday night’s SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast of Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout on SHOWTIME® earned record viewership for boxing on the premium network in two categories. The three-fight telecast drew an average audience of 1.047 million viewers, the highest since 2004 when Nielsen began to separately measure premium television multiplex channels. The main event, Cotto vs. Trout, peaked at nearly 1.4 million viewers, the highest peak on record since 2009 when data on viewership for individual bouts first became available.

The first replay of Saturday’s record-setting, three-fight telecast will air tonight, Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME EXTREME and is available at SHOWTIME ON DEMAND.

In a dramatic contest that featured swings in momentum for both men, Austin Trout defeated Miguel Cotto via unanimous decision in front of 13,000+ at New York’s Madison Square Garden on December 1. Cotto, the very popular Puerto Rican star, came into the fight with a more accomplished resume than Trout. Cotto was 7-0 at MSG, 37-3, with 30 KOs overall and entering his 21st consecutive world title fight. Trout had never fought at the famed New York arena and entered the ring undefeated in his relatively obscure career at 25-0. Trout scored what many consider a significant upset to retain his WBA Super Welterweight World Championship and hand the legendary Cotto his first loss at Madison Square Garden.

Epilogue, the second of two episodes of ALL ACCESS: Cotto vs. Trout premieres Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME, immediately prior to the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING telecast featuring Amir Khan and Carlos Molina. Epilogue takes viewers behind the scenes of the Cotto vs. Trout fight week build-up and offers a rare glimpse into the raw emotion and drama during Saturday’s world championship event and its aftermath.

Cotto vs. Trout at Madison Square Garden was promoted by Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions in association with Greg Cohen Promotions.

ARGENTIAN PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPION SERGIO “MARAVILLA” MARTINEZ’ UPCOMING FIGHT

New York, NY / Buenos Aires, Argentina (12/4/12) – It was officially announced last week that WBC Middleweight Champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez (50-2-2, 28KO’s), who will be presented with his new belt this week at the WBC Convention in Cancun, will defend his title next against England’s undefeated interim WBA Middleweight Champion Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11KO’s) in Martinez’ home country of Argentina. In a historic move, the event was announced by the President of Argentina, Cristina Kirchner and will be held on April 27. The bout will be broadcast on HBO’s “World Championship Boxing”.

“I’m privileged and honored to take part in Argentinian history in the announcement of my homecoming fight in my homeland with President Cristina de Kirchner and I want to thank my fans for supporting me throughout my career and I promise to give them a show they will be proud of on April 27,” said Martinez.

“On April 27, the great Sergio Martinez will defend his title against a worthy challenger in front of fifty thousand adoring Argentinians. This will be a historic night for middleweight boxing and I am thrilled to be Sergio’s promoter and to be part of an event of this magnitude,” said promoter Lou DiBella.

“I am very honored to be a part of such a historic event,” said Martinez’ longtime advisor Sampson Lewkowicz. “This will be a very special night for me as this has been a dream and request of Sergio’s to be able to defend his championship in front of all of his adoring fans in Argentina, the country that loves him so much for a long time.”

Never in the history of the sport has the President of a country made the official announcement of a fight as is the case with Martinez’ upcoming bout. In addition to announcing the world championship bout, President Kirchner also revealed that the fight will be shown live on public TV Channel 7 in Argentina, allowing 40 million Argentinians to see their champion defend his title on free television.

The bout will be Martinez’ first in Argentina since February 2002, and his first since winning a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., which was shown live on HBO PPV on September 15. Martinez is, in fact, undefeated in Argentina, winning 24 of 25 bouts, with one draw later avenged, since turning pro in 1997. He will look to continue that streak against Murray on April 27.

The 30-year-old Murray, a native of the United Kingdom, is coming off a sixth-round TKO over previously undefeated Jorge Navarro on November 24. The lone blemish on Murray’s record is a split decision draw to longtime reigning WBA Middleweight Champion Felix Sturm.

A Week in Will’s World Part 1

As I’m preparing myself for my December 19 showdown against tough contender Otis Griffin, I must admit, there’s always a lot of things on my mind. Those who know me best are aware of my commitment outside of the squared circle as a full time emergency medical technician (EMT) in one of the roughest areas in Brooklyn, NY. During my amateur and professional boxing career, I’ve seen a lot of unbelievable things, but it can’t compare to what my eyes have witnessed during my regular job.

Last week, I had to transport a 2 month baby to the hospital because her father accidentally punched the back of her head while he attempted to hit the mother. Accident or not, this was very difficult to deal with and I truly felt terrible about the situation. I can’t even fathom how traumatic that is for an infant in that environment. My unit had to assist with an emotionally disturbed person (EDP), where a family member called for emergency guidance with somebody acted violently. In situations like these, EMS and NYPD personnel work together to get the patient the care they need.

On Thanksgiving Day, we had a young man, early to mid-40’s, in cardiac arrest who was in a car accident. We don’t know if he went into arrest before or after the crash, all we know is that his heart was not beating. There’s no way to tell in the moment but everyone did what we could to help. Sadly, the young man passed away. It’s moments like these, where I witness some of the worst tragedies firsthand, that make me realize how blessed I am to do what I love; box and help others.

Every day before work, I spend a few hours in the gym preparing for my fight against Otis Griffin. Admittedly, it’s tiring at times to juggle working full time and training for world-class opponents, but I guess my willpower gets me through it (no pun intended). Whether it’s Griffin, Pavlik, Rodriguez or an opponent I’m expect to defeat by an early knockout, I get ready for every fighter as if they’re a world champion.

The most important thing is trying to keep my mind focused on the immediate task and I have a simple formula. When I’m at work,
I work and keep boxing in the back of my mind. While I’m training, my focus is fully on boxing and not the crazy situations I may see later that day.

In some instances, like the Aaron Pryor Jr. fight right into the Kelly Pavlik bout, my captain allowed me to take a lot of my own time. I was able to focus fully on boxing. While I don’t always have the time to take off, I have to adapt. Each morning at 8 AM, I go to the boxing gym or work on strength and conditioning. I have alternating days for both gyms. In some cases, if good sparring is available for certain days, I work it out according.
Either way, I’m grinding at least 6 days a week and that’s what I’m becoming used to.

On December 19, I’m looking forward putting on a great show and plan to provide you with an early Christmas gift; a victory. With that said, I never take fights because it’s an easy win but because it’s a challenge. Griffin’s team made many inquiries about fighting me and I’ll make him regret that. We’ll call it “Seasons Beatings”. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone on fight night.

Sincerely,

Will “Power” Rosinsky
16-2 (9 KO’s)

Beltran vs. Kim on ESPN Boxing: Friday Night Fights Special Edition December 6

On Thursday Dec. 6, ESPN.com’s No. 8 (The Ring’s No. 10) ranked Lightweight contender Ray Beltran (26-6, 17 KOs) will meet former Lightweight title challenger Ji-Hoon “Volcano” Kim (24-7, 18 KOs) in the 10-round main event in an ESPN Boxing: Friday Night Fights Special Edition. Thursday’s card from Las Vegas will air at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes, and will be available online through WatchESPN.com, and on smartphones and tablets via the WatchESPN app. The card is presented by Top Rank Promotions.

Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas will be ringside for ESPN2 HD at the Mirage Hotel & Casino describing the action, while studio host Bernardo Osuna will be on site presenting all the latest news and boxing highlights. Alex Pombo and Delvin Rodriguez will call the fights for ESPN Deportes’ Viernes de Combates (Friday Night Fights) with Leopoldo Gonzalez and Pablo Viruega in the studio.

Both shows will include interviews with Juan Manuel Marquez and Manny Pacquiao as they prepare for their upcoming bout scheduled for December 8 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. ESPN Deportes will also include live interviews with 50 Cent, and Yuriorkis Gamboa, and 2012 U.S. Olympian Jose Ramirez, both on Saturday’s undercard.

Main Event:
North Hollywood California’s Beltran, a sparring partner of Manny Pacquiao, is trained by International Boxing Hall of Fame 2012 inductee Freddie Roach and 1992 U.S. Olympian Pepe Reilly. Beltran won his last fight in July with a 10-round majority decision win over Hank Lundy on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.

After that fight, ESPN.com boxing writer Dan Rafael wrote: “Beltran nearly stopped him (Lundy) in the final seconds of the third round. Beltran, who was cut over his left eye, trapped Lundy against the ropes and was teeing off on him. He badly rocked Lundy and was close to a stoppage. Time and again, Lundy found himself against the ropes with Beltran serving as the aggressor throughout the bout. He continually stalked Lundy and outworked him en route to the upset decision.”

Beltran said of Friday’s fight, “I’ve seen Kim fight a few times. I think he’s a very strong fighter. He’s very aggressive. He comes to fight. I think it’s going to be a great fight, a tough fight. I’ve got to be careful with him.”

South Korea’s Kim has won his last three fights, including a May 10-round decision over previously undefeated Alisher Rahimov.

“Kim has now won three fights in a row and probably would test any lightweight in world just based on his sheer aggressiveness,” wrote Rafael after that fight. “He is so much fun to watch and dangerous because he is fearless, in great condition, and loves to wing big right hands that could hurt anyone.”

Co-Feature:
Thursday’s co-feature will pit undefeated Junior Featherweight Jesse Magdaleno (12-0, 9 KOs) of Las Vegas against Jonathan “Thunder” Arellano (13-1-1, 3 KOs) of California. Magdaleno is coming off a first-round knockout win over Jose Silvera, while Arellano will look to rebound after an eight-round unanimous decision loss to Roman Morales.

Congresswoman-Elect Tulsi Gabbard Welcomes Boxing Champ Manny Pacquiao’s Continued Support

Hollywood, Calif.– Congresswoman-Elect Tulsi Gabbard today presented World Boxing Champion and Philippines Congressman Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao with a flag that was flown over the Hawaii State Capitol, along with an honorary certificate.

“We have many tough challenges that our respective countries are facing, and our commitment to working together is a symbol of the unity that is necessary in order for our country and global community to move forward,” Gabbard said during an appearance at Wild Card Boxing Club, Pacquiao’s training facility in Hollywood, California.

“I was proud to support Tulsi during her campaign because she stands for the people and will fight for their interests,” Pacquiao said.

Pacquiao appeared in print and radio ads for Gabbard during the weeks leading up to the August primary.

“I was impressed with her record of service and her deep ties to the Filipino community,” Pacquiao said. “I wasn’t surprised by her landslide victories, because she’s also a fighter. I am convinced she will make Hawai’i proud.”

Gabbard said she was humbled by Pacquiao’s early endorsement because he is both a national hero and someone who has also chosen to serve the public in elective office.

“As Congressional members in our two allied countries, we are committed to working together on issues that are of concern to both of our communities – issues like eliminating human trafficking, immigration reform, and creating jobs to increase the economic prosperity and quality of life for the people in our communities,” Gabbard said.

About Tulsi:

As a member of the Hawai‘i National Guard, Tulsi Gabbard served two tours of duty in the Middle East. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for her service and currently serves as a Captain.

A Democrat, Tulsi was the youngest person elected in Hawai‘i history, when in 2002 at the age of 21, she won a Hawai‘i State House seat. Two years later, Tulsi gave up her position in the Legislature to voluntarily join her fellow soldiers being deployed to a war zone in Iraq. Between her two deployments to the Middle East, Tulsi served as an aide to U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka. In 2010 she was elected to the Honolulu City Council where she chaired the Safety, Economic Development, and Government Affairs committee. On November 6, 2012, she was elected by the people of Hawaii to represent Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District, and is one of the first female combat veterans to ever be elected to Congress.
