DONNIE NIETES EYES ‘GREATEST VICTORY’ AND FIVE MORE YEARS IN BOXING
LOS ANGELES, JULY 12 – Donnie Nietes says he could still be fighting at the age of 45 as he goes in search of his ‘greatest ever victory’.
The former four-weight world champion bids to reclaim the WBO world junior bantamweight title in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday night, when he takes in Kazuto Ioka.
Nietes, 40, made his professional debut in 2003 and has built a legendary career but the Filipino hero has no intention of stepping away anytime soon and hopes a WBO title win leads to super flyweight unification contests.
“I think I could box for another three to five years,” Nietes told Probellum.com.
The future Hall of Famer soon vacated the belt but believes that winning it back, on Ioka’s home turf, will ranked as his finest hour.
“I think this win would rank as the greatest victory of my career because the fight is taking place in his hometown,” Nietes added.
“I am really excited for this rematch with Ioka and I plan to use the same tactics as in 2018 because I don’t believe he has changed much since our first fight.”

2-time World champion Rances Barthelemy reunited with trainer Orlando Cuellar for July 30th showdown with Gary Antuanne Russell
MIAMI (July 12, 2022) – Two-time lightweight World Champion Rances “Kid Blast” Barthelemy (29-1-1, 15 KOs) has reunited with his original head trainer when he turned pro in 2009, Orlando Cuellar, for his July 30th fight airing on Showtime against undefeated 2016 US Olympian Gary Antuanne Russell (15-0, 15 KOs) at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
A celebrated Cuban amateur boxer who relocated to Miami, Barthelemy had Cuellar in his corner for his first 14 pro fights (14-0) until he moved to Las Vegas. Barthelemy is back in southern Florida, and he recently met with Cuellar to discuss their reunion.
(L-R) Rances Barthelemy, Glen Johnson, Orlando Cuellar (background), Luis Franco and Ricardo Cordoba from circa 2009
“He knew that he’d have an advantage with us working together again because I know him well and we’ve always had chemistry and success,” Cuellar explained. “I trained him for the first half of his pro career and helped him turn pro. When I first started training him, he was a pure boxer. I showed him how to work the middle and inside distances, using fast combinations to the head, and get in big body shots. We did a lot of body work. I remember things came very naturally to him when I showed him what we needed. I wanted his ring name to be ‘The Natural’ but he would become ‘Kid Blast,’ which also fits him very well.
“Through the years, he’s acquired a high-level ring IQ at top level success using his counterpunching with speed and power. Training is going as good as expected and we’re bringing his A game!”
Cuba native Cuellar, a Florida Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, will be returning home to his roots in New York City, where he started his career as a boxing trainer. The veteran trainer is best known for his work with world champions Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver.
LISA WHITESIDE HAS COMEBACK FIGHT CONFIRMED
LONDON, JULY 12 – Lisa Whiteside’s long-awaited comeback fight has been confirmed.
The former Great Britain amateur star ends a near three-year spell away from the ring when she boxes on July 30, in Newcastle on a Wasserman Boxing promotion.
Whiteside, 3-0 as a professional, last boxed in September 2019 but took time away from the sport to focus on having her first child before injury issues delayed her return further.
But the 36-year-old is fully fit, has been firing in the gym and is ready to relaunch her career in Newcastle later this month.
“I can’t wait, I am absolutely made up to be on this show and to make my Probellum debut, on such a good card, is brilliant,”buzzed Whiteside.
“I am going to embrace every second of my comeback fight and enjoy it – I am just so happy to be back fighting and be back in the mix!”
The 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist plans to use her Newcastle return to catapult her into the super bantamweight world title reckoning.
“I want to be fast-tracked and to quickly be in position to fight for titles,” Whiteside, who is known as the ‘Lionheart’, declared.
“I may only be 3-0 as a pro but I’ve got masses and masses of experience from the amateurs so I don’t want to be messing around. I want to get on with my career and push on towards the big fights.”

WBO INTERNATIONAL TITLE CONFIRMED FOR KELLY VS. BASTIDA
Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) will be counting on the support of the North East to get him over the line when he competes against Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) for the WBO International Super Welterweight Championship on Saturday July 30 at the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle, free-to-air and live on Channel 5.
This is an unbelievable chance for one of these fighters to break into the world rankings with the WBO. After a dominant performance against Peter Kramer, Kelly will look to carry that confidence to cement himself into the world rankings.
Alongside the reward of a world ranking also comes big fights. With the division being held up by undisputed champion Jermell Charlo, Kelly will be looking to reintroduce himself dramatically onto the global scene of the super welterweight division.
Now Kelly not only has the thrill of fighting in front of his own, but a title on the line certainly adds any final elements of motivation needed. Having been given the news, Kelly was elated and confident that this was only the start of big things to come.
“I’m buzzing, and I’m ready. There’s no reason to sugar-coat the fact that my opponent will be putting even more into training to come and try to cause an upset,” said Kelly. “We are covering all bases in camp, and when you have world title aspirations you make sure you’re preparing like a world champion.”
He continues, “The WBO belt adds that additional spice to things, and it’s about me going out there and being Josh Kelly that will see it leaving the arena with me in front of my friends and family. We are the North East, and we don’t do things in half-measures. On fight night, i’ll be there to push the pace and show why this will be the first belt of many.”
Bastida will be providing a very real threat to the title aspirations of Sunderland’s ‘PBK’. At 25-years-old the Argentine has had additional rounds, but holds a similar record to Kelly in only having one loss and one draw on his record. The narrow margins between the fighters guarantee a technical and excellent battle between two men looking to give it all to claim the belt and move on to endless possibilities in their next fight.
After two hugely successful terrestrial television shows, the announcement of a title promises to entertain all those in attendance at the Vertu Motors Arena as well as the Channel 5 audience. Wasserman’s Head of Global Boxing, Kalle Sauerland, expressed his delight for Kelly and the doors it could open to get the North East boy back where he belongs.
“Josh Kelly fighting for titles feels like one of the most natural things in boxing,” said Sauerland. “His pedigree and his ability rightfully have him fighting for the WBO International belt when we blow the roof off the Vertu Motors Arena. This will stick Josh’s name exactly where it belongs and sets up an exciting future where massive fights can be made for our former Olympian. Newcastle, be ready!”
The North East takeover is coming as Josh Kelly (11-1-1, 7 KOs) vs. Lucas Bastida (18-1-1, 10 KOs) headline on an electric fight night. Olympic hero Pat McCormack (1-0, 1 KO) also stars, alongside Harlem Eubank (14-0, 6 KOs) as he continues his title charge against Tom ‘Fazza’ Farrell (21-5, 5 KOs). Heavyweights Hosea Stewart (2-0) and Franklin Ignatius (3-0, 1 KO) guaranteed to produce fireworks amongst top local talent such as Mark Dickinson (3-0, 1 KO), ‘Drago’ Steve Robinson (4-1, 3 KOs), Kai Richmond (1-0), Ben Marksby (4-0), Lisa Whiteside (3-0, 1KO) and Jordan Barker-Porter (3-1) on an unforgettable night in the North East. Wasserman Boxing heads to the Vertu Motors Arena in Newcastle for a massive night of free-to-air boxing on Saturday July 30, live on Channel 5 in association with William Hill, Numan and Infinitum Entertainment.
Tickets priced £40, £80, £100 and £200 are on sale now and available via www.wassermanboxing.com
SUPER-FLY SENSATION RODRIGUEZ DEFENDS WORLD CROWN AGAINST GONZALEZ ON CANELO-GGG III CARD
Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez will defend his WBC World Super-Flyweight title against Israel Gonzalez as the co-main event on the undercard of the trilogy clash between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday September 17. The event, presented by Matchroom, Canelo Promotions and GGG Promotions, will broadcast live on DAZN Pay-Per-View in the U.S. and Canada as well as around the world on DAZN (excluding Mexico, Latin America, and Kazakhstan).
Rodriguez (16-0 11 KOs) is in red-hot form after a sensational stoppage win over Thai star Srisaket Sor Rungvisai on his San Antonio home turf in June, his eighth round triumph coming in the first defense of the title he won after stepping in late to meet Carlos Cuadras for the vacant strap in February in Phoenix.
‘Bam’ extended his promotional pact with Eddie Hearn following the win over Rungivisai, and he looks to strengthen his fighter of the year claims with another strong showing as he puts the green and gold strap on the line against Mexican Gonzalez (28-4-1 11 KOs).
The 25 year old challenges for World honors for the fourth time having previously faced Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez, Kal Yafai and Jerwin Ancajas for belts at 115lbs, and the Mexican will lay it all on the line with huge support from the crowd on Mexican Independence Day weekend in Sin City.
“September 17, we are back,” said Rodriguez. “It’s an honor to be a part of this card and I want to thank Matchroom and Teiken for giving me this opportunity. Having the chance to fight on Mexican Independence Day weekend, as the co-main to Canelo-GGG is truly special and I plan on putting on another spectacular performance and continuing to build my legacy.
“Each fight now is more important than the last. It’s not about just winning; it’s how you win. That’s mine and my coach Robert Garcia’s job now; to look sensational each and every time we step in the ring and continue to show the world that I am one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet.”
“I want to thank Matchroom but most I want to thank the champ Jesse Rodriguez for the opportunity,” said Gonzalez. “I know I’ll take full advantage of this and make my dream come true of becoming a World champion on September 17.
“Fighting on Canelo-GGG III card is a dream come true for Bam to showcase his talent to the whole world,” said Rodriguez’s trainer and manager Robert Garcia. “Thanks to Matchroom and Teiken for this huge opportunity. We will take this chance to show the boxing world that Bam is one of the most talented fighters in the world.”
“I am delighted to make Jesse the first fighter on the undercard of a spectacular night on September 17,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Jesse is the hottest property in the sport right now after his electric performances in the first half of 2022, and he’s looking to build on that on the biggest possible platform.
“Israel is sure to give it everything he has got on Mexican Independence Day weekend, but I believe you are going to see another special performance from a seriously talented young fighter in Jesse.”
Jesse Rodriguez’s clash with Israel Gonzalez is the first bout announced for the undercard of the third installment of the classic modern rivalry between Canelo and Golovkin, with the Mexican king putting his undisputed Super-Middleweight crown on the line against Kazakhstan’s reigning WBA and IBF Middleweight ruler in the most anticipated match up of 2022.

The Las Vegas Takeover: Teofimo Lopez Returns in Junior Welterweight Main Event Against Pedro Campa August 13 at Resorts World Las Vegas & LIVE on ESPN
LAS VEGAS (July 11, 2022) — Teofimo Lopez took over the lightweight division. Now campaigning at junior welterweight, it is time for Operation: Take Back.
Lopez, the former lightweight champion, will face Mexican veteran Pedro “Roca” Campa in the 10-round main event Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Resorts World Event Center at Resorts World Las Vegas. In the eight-round junior middleweight co-feature, rising Puerto Rican star Xander Zayas steps up in class against Elias “Latin Kid” Espadas.
Lopez-Campa and Zayas-Espadas will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.
Promoted by Top Rank, tickets starting at $40 go on sale Wednesday, July 13 at 12 p.m. PT and can be purchased at ETix.com.
“Teofimo Lopez has a clean bill of health and is ready to make noise at 140 pounds. It all starts with a difficult test in Pedro Campa,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “Xander Zayas is a special young talent, and I expect him to put on another sensational performance. Top Rank looks forward to another fantastic night of boxing at Resorts World Las Vegas.”
Lopez (16-1, 12 KOs), a Brooklyn native who now resides in Las Vegas, makes his 2022 debut following a whirlwind past few years that saw him graduate from prospect to lightweight king. He became a viral sensation with a first-round, one-punch knockout over Mason Menard in December 2018. One year later, he captured the IBF world title with a second-round destruction over Richard Commey. Lopez became the unified and lineal lightweight champion in October 2020 with a unanimous decision over pound-for-pound legend Vasiliy “Loma” Lomachenko. Lopez’s lightweight reign came to a shocking end last November when George Kambosos Jr. climbed off the canvas to earn a split decision in what many experts called the Upset of the Year. Now at junior welterweight and fully recovered from assorted injuries, Lopez is set to conquer a second weight class.
“I’m thankful to be back August 13. I’ve been looking forward to this since my last fight,” Lopez said. “I’ve had a lot of complications, but we’re looking towards the future and are on to bigger and better things. I’m here to take over the 140-pound division just like I did at 135. Like always, I’m going to bring excitement to the sport of boxing. The Takeover is still in full effect. You don’t want to miss it.”
Campa (34-1-1, 23 KOs), fighting out of Hermosillo, Mexico, is unbeaten in eight fights since the lone loss on his ledger. He is conducting an eight-week camp in Southern California under the watchful eye of a new head trainer, Manny Robles, who led Oscar Valdez and Andy Ruiz (among many others) to world championship glory. Campa is coming off a third-round knockout over Carlos Sanchez Valadez, who entered the bout 22-0.
“I am excited and thankful to Top Rank and Teofimo Lopez for this opportunity. He is a tremendous fighter,” Campa said. “I am coming to Resorts World Las Vegas ready to implement everything I have learned with my incredible trainer, Manny Robles. We’ve been in Southern California working hard and preparing for the best version of Teofimo Lopez. I believe I can be a force at 140 pounds, and it’s up to me to show that on August 13.”
Zayas (13-0, 9 KOs), the 19-year-old phenom from San Juan, bolstered his status as one of boxing’s top prospects after going 6-0 in 2021. He knocked out durable veterans Larry Fryers and Dan Karpency and went the six-round distance against New Mexico native Jose Luis Sanchez. Zayas made his 2022 debut in March, going eight rounds for the first time with a shutout over Quincy LaVallais. His scheduled June 11 return was scrapped after he contracted a non-COVID-related viral infection. Zayas is healthy and primed to fight Espadas (22-4, 15 KOs), a native of Yucatan, Mexico, who has never been knocked out. He has not lost since a close 2018 decision to Olympic bronze medalist Yamaguchi Falcao.
Zayas said, “I can’t wait to get back in the ring after what happened in June. That is all in the past, and I am 100 percent recovered. I want to thank all the fans for the support. That meant a lot and motivated me even more to train harder. On August 13, there will be a lot of fireworks between Puerto Rico and Mexico. You can count on that!”
In undercard action, streaming live on ESPN+:
Las Vegas-born junior lightweight contender Andres “Savage” Cortes (17-0, 10 KOs) steps up in an eight-round tilt against Abraham Montoya (20-3-1, 14 KOs). Cortes has won three straight fights by stoppage, including last August’s first-round blitzing of former world title challenger Genesis Servania. Montoya is coming off a razor-thin majority decision loss to top prospect Gabriel Flores Jr.
Featherweight U.S. Olympic silver medalist Duke Ragan (6-0, 1 KO), from Cincinnati, Ohio, returns in a six-rounder against fellow unbeaten D’Angelo Fuentes (7-0, 4 KOs).
Middleweight Troy Isley (6-0, 4 KOs), Ragan’s Olympic teammate from the Tokyo Games, will see action in a six-rounder against Victor Toney (6-1-1, 5 KOs). Isley knocked out Donte Stubbs in the sixth round in his last outing.
Lightweight prospect Charlie Sheehy (3-0, 3 KOs) makes his second pro appearance at Resorts World Las Vegas in a four-rounder, while Puerto Rican junior welterweight standout Omar Rosario (7-0, 2 KOs) will fight in a six-rounder.
In a featherweight battle scheduled for eight rounds, veteran contender Jose Enrique Vivas (21-2, 11 KOs) will take on Edy Valencia (19-7-6, 7 KOs).

FOUR-DIVISION WORLD CHAMPION ADRIEN BRONER AND FORMER WORLD CHAMPION OMAR FIGUEROA JR. SET FOR SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT CLASH LIVE ON SHOWTIME® ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 20 HEADLINING PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS EVENT
HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – July 11, 2022 – Four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner, one of the sport’s most notable attractions and biggest personalities, will make his long-awaited return against all-action former world champion Omar “Panterita” Figueroa in a 12-round super lightweight showdown headlining action live on SHOWTIME on Saturday, August 20 from Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla. in a Premier Boxing Champions event.
The SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will feature top 140-pounders Alberto Puello and Batyr Akhmedov squaring off for the vacant WBA Super Lightweight World Championship in the co-main event. Plus, WBA Super Featherweight World Champion Roger Gutierrez defends his title against unbeaten Hector Garcia in the telecast opener.
Tickets for the live event are on sale now and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com.
The two former champions present an intriguing contrast of styles as the flashy, technical skills of Broner match up against the bruising, volume attack of Figueroa. Both fighters have reached incredible highs and delivered memorable moments throughout their careers and will look to go through one another to return to championship contention.
Cincinnati’s Broner (34-4-1, 24 KOs), is one of the most popular and colorful personalities in the sport and quickly rose to prominence by combining supreme boxing with a brash outspoken personality. By the age of 26, he had captured world titles at 130, 135, 140 and 147 pounds, becoming one of only eight active fighters to win a world championship in four divisions. Broner has faced several multi-division world champions such as Manny Pacquiao, Paulie Malignaggi, Marcos Maidana, Mikey Garcia and Jessie Vargas. He most recently won a unanimous decision over Jovanie Santiago in February 2021 and now returns to the super lightweight division where he dominated Khabib Allakhverdiev to win a 140-pound title in 2015.
“I’m going in there to try to stop Figueroa,” said Broner. “I’m going to take the fight to him and go ahead and get him out of there. What I expect from him is the same gruesome Figueroa that we always see. He’ll try to make it a rough fight. Every fighter is different, but I don’t think he’ll be hard to hit. So, I’ll see ya’ll on August 20.’’
The 32-year-old Figueroa (28-2-1, 19 KOs) is from a fighting family along with his younger brother Brandon, a former super bantamweight world champion. Figueroa won the WBC Lightweight World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Nihito Arakawa in a 2013 “Fight of the Year” and successfully defended the title two times before moving up to super lightweight in 2015. Figueroa has also fought at welterweight, earning action-packed victories over Robert Guerrero, John Molina Jr., and Antonio DeMarco. He’ll move back down to super lightweight on August 20 after back-to-back defeats against Yordenis Ugas and Abel Ramos.
“I’m excited to move on to the next phase of my life and career, especially now that my mental health is at the forefront of everything I do,” said Figueroa. “Having a clear mind has been the best thing to happen to me. Now I’m able to focus 100% on my boxing career and I can’t wait to be back in the ring on August 20.”
A native of San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, Puello (20-0, 10 KOs) now fights out of Las Vegas under the guidance of renowned coach Ismael Salas. The 27-year-old leapt up the rankings in July 2019, handing Jonathan Alonso his first career defeat with a unanimous decision victory that earned him an interim title. Puello was successful in his U.S. debut in December 2021, as he scored a unanimous decision victory over Veshawn Owens in Owen’s hometown.
“I’m very committed to winning this fight for my team and my country,” said Puello. “I am more than prepared to make the most of this opportunity. My only focus is on earning this victory, becoming world champion and taking on all the challenges that come my way after that.”
Born in Uzbekistan and now fighting out of Los Angeles, Akhmedov (9-1, 8 KOs) represented Turkey at the 2016 Olympic games. The 31-year-old turned pro in 2017 and won his first seven pro fights, with six coming by knockout. His lone blemish came in an action-packed title fight against Mario Barrios in September 2019, where he was able to survive two knockdowns to make it a close fight, before eventually losing by decision. Akhmedov has rebounded to win back-to-back fights, including a stoppage of the typically durable former world champion Argenis Mendez in June 2021.
“I’m excited that I’m finally getting my shot at the world title again,” said Akhmedov. “I have worked very hard to reach my goal of becoming world champion. This time, I’m going to do everything possible to make sure that I take full advantage of this opportunity.”
The 27-year-old Gutierrez (26-3-1, 20 KOs) captured his world title with a unanimous decision victory over Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado in January 2021, in a fight that saw him drop his opponent three times. Gutierrez followed up that performance by defending his world championship and defeating Alvarado a second time in August 2021, again earning a unanimous decision. Fighting out of his native Maracaibo, Venezuela, Gutierrez is unbeaten in his last seven outings, including four knockouts.
“I am excited to return to the ring and defend my title for the second time,” said Gutierrez. “This is going to be a difficult fight, but I am confident in my abilities and my preparation, and I know I will be victorious. I am ready to show the world again that I am the best in this division.”
Tall and rangy with good power in his left hand and a dedicated body attack, the 30-year-old Garcia (15-0, 10 KOs) scored one of the biggest upsets of the year in February, when he stepped in as a late replacement for Gutierrez to defeat then-unbeaten Chris Colbert on SHOWTIME in Las Vegas. The 5-9 Garcia represented his native San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic, in the 2016 Olympics before turning pro in December that year. Along with his countryman Puello, Garcia is also trained by the highly respected Ismael Salas in Las Vegas.
“This is a very important fight for me because I have worked for so long to win a world title,” said Garcia. “This fight is for all of the people in the Dominican Republic. I can’t wait to display my skills for them once again on SHOWTIME. It’s also a very special night because me and my friend Alberto Puello will both be fighting for world titles, the first time two Dominicans will do so on the same night. We grew up together and had the same amateur coaches and now we have a chance to make history together.”
Howling, who hails from Calgary, Canada, is 3-0 since turning professional in 2019 having moved to the sport from Muay Thai, where she was a national champion.
Coached by Declan Walsh, a nutritionist to Regis Prograis and Errol Spence Junior among many other elite level fighters, Howling has a fearless attitude and had no hesitation accepting fights with Skye Nicolson and Ramla Ali earlier this year – only for those contests to fall through without explanation.
“Female boxing has never been as hot as it is right now,”said super bantamweight Howling, who has plans to fight in the UK this year.
“It’s an unsaturated market and it’s on the rise. I know I am going to be seen and I’m going to be able to make waves with the talent that I have.
“Especially in the U.K., the pool of females in the bantam and super bantamweight divisions is super plentiful. So, there are many fights to be made at my weight class, so I’m happy to be there.
“This is perfect timing.”
Howling last boxed in May 2021 and says the “biggest issue” has been ensuring her fights don’t fall through – like in the case of Nicolson and Ali.
“I was due to fight Skye on March 5 for her debut,” Howling said.
“The fight was going to be three or four weight classes above me and on short notice, but I took less than five minutes to say ‘yes’.
“The person at Matchroom came back to us said: ‘Skye’s team doesn’t want to fight’.
“They then offered me Ramla Ali, and I said: ‘Yes’. I didn’t take any time to answer, five seconds if that, but Matchroom came back an hour or two later saying that Ramla’s team didn’t want to fight.
“The Skye fight was then being planned for Madison Square Garden, on the Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano undercard, and we were waiting to sign the contracts, when there was some excuse madeand that she wasn’t going to give me the fight anymore.
“Maybe one day I’ll just put that weight on, and we’ll go to it.”

Promising prospect David Ribeiro added to “The Next Chapter”
QUINCY, Mass. (July 11, 2022) – One of New England’s brightest prospects, Brockton (MA) welterweight David “The Blessed One” Ribeiro (1-0, 1 KO), has been added to “The Next Chapter” card, presented by Granite Chin Promotions, on Saturday night, August 6, at Bridgewater Veterans Club in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.
The 25-year-old Ribeiro faces 71-fight veteran DeWayne Wisdom in a 4-round match. Ribeiro was impressive in his pro debut this past June 25th, when he stopped Rakim Johnson (6-18-1, 5 KOs) in the second round. Wisdom fought on the same card in Framingham (MA).
“I only saw one round of his fight because I had to get ready for mine,” Ribeiro said. “He has a lot of experience and will be coming off a long losing streak. I’m getting ready to do my job to perform and win. I can’t look past him.”
Ribeiro’s pro debut was delayed, originally scheduled for May 7th at the Bridgewater Vets Club, which is considerably closer to Ribeiro’s home in Brockton, but his opponent never got on the plane, and the fight was canceled the day before the show.
“I had fought without head gear before (his pro debut) at the Olympic Trials,” Ribeiro compared his amateur and pro boxing experience. “The pace is slower in the amateurs because of the scoring by points. It was fun (his pro debut). My opponent had heavy hands and I had to dig deep to get him out. I know I can do damage and tell when my opponent is hurt. It’s easier to tell that in the pros because amateurs wear head gear, and you can’t see their face as clearly.
“It was a big relief (winning his pro debut). I’m excited to be fighting on this show because its closer to my home, about a 20-minute drive to Bridgewater. I’m expecting more people to come out to watch me in Bridgewater than for my first fight in Framingham. I’m the type of person who like to write down stuff before it happens. I envisioned going 5-0 before the end of this year and then fighting on TV with an undefeated record, maybe against another undefeated prospect, and eventually getting a title shot.”
“I’m excited to be getting Dave right back in the ring and staying busy,” Granite Chin Promotions president Chris Traietti commented. “He showed a lot of promise in his pro debut, taking on a guy most fighters don’t want to fight until their fifth or sixth fight. August 6th is no different, in just his second fight. He is taking on a veteran most people don’t fight until a little later on. He has a ton of potential and pretty soon everyone at t the national level is going to know it.”
Former New England Welterweight Champion Mike “Bad Man” Ohan, Jr., fighting out of nearby Holbrook (MA), meets junior welterweight Argentinian Jonathan “Yoni” Ariel Sosa (7-13-2, 4 KOs) in the 10-round main event.
Swansea’s (MA) Anthony “The Gentle Savage” Andreozzi (3-2, 1 KO) and Woburn’s (MA) Julien “Black Dragon” Baptiste (4-2, 2 KOs), in the 6-round co-feature for the vacant Massachusetts Middleweight Championship.
Raphael Torres (2-0, 2 KOs), of Framingham (MA), and Fall River’s (MA) Jonathan Gruber (3-1, 2 KOs) will throw down in a 6-rounder for the vacant Massachusetts Cruiserweight Championship in a fight that should enhance the career prospects for the winner.
New Bedford (MA) light heavyweight prospect Edet “Papito” Mkpanam (7-0, 6 KOs), 2018 New England Golden Gloves runner-up, puts his undefeated pro record on the line against veteran Texas fighter Larry “Slo Mo” Smith (13-50-2, 9 KOs) a 6-round bout.
Methuen (MA) junior middleweight Luke Iannuccilli (2-0, 2 KOs) is scheduled to fight in a 4-round bout.
Card subject to change.
Tickets are available for purchase at GRANITE-CHIN-PROMOTIONS.TICKETLEAP.COM or www.ticketriver.com (Search: The Next Chapter) for $45.00 (standing room), $60.00 (floor seats), $80.00 (VIP stage seats) and $40.00 for a table of 4.
Doors open at 7 p.m. ET, first bout at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Last Chance Tournament: Moran-Dutchover and Castañeda-Fernandez Semifinal Bouts Set for Aug. 5 Live on ProBox TV in Plant City, Florida
PLANT CITY, Florida (July 11, 2022): The semifinal bouts for ProBox TV’s Last Chance Tournament are set for Friday, Aug. 5 at the ProBox Events Center in Plant City, Florida.
In this double main event, Mexico’s Antonio Moran (27-5-1, 19 KOs) will take on Texas native Michael Dutchover (16-2, 10 KOs), while San Antonio’s Kendo Castañeda (18-5, 9 KOs) will face off against Florida native Joseph Fernandez (15-4-3, 5 KOs). Both fights are scheduled for 10 rounds in the 140-pound division.
The event will stream live globally on ProBox TV. Tickets for the event on sale now and start at $50, excluding applicable services charges. Tickets are available for purchase at EventBrite.com or by clicking here.
The Last Chance tournament kicked off in May on the undercard of Pascal-Meng and initiated with eight fighters in the 140-pound division. All boxers were chosen based on having had a top amateur trajectory before initiating a promising professional career that took a few difficult turns in recent bouts. The winner of the tournament will get a Last Chance at revitalizing his career.
In the quarter finals, Moran beat Jeffrey Torres via unanimous decision, while Dutchover defeated Clarence Booth by split decision. Dutchover will look to outbox Moran, while Moran has emphasized his desire and ability to make it a war.
On that same night in May, Castañeda scored a first-round knockout victory over Sonny Frederickson, while Fernandez upset Zhiming Wang via decision. Castañeda is confident that he can score another knockout win, while Fernandez feels he has what it takes to win the entire tournament.
Additional undercard information will be announced shortly.

RICHARD SCHAEFER ON NIETES – Unifications aim after Ioka fight
LOS ANGELES, JULY 11 – Richard Schaefer says the “special” Donnie Nietes will chase major unification fights after regaining his world title.Nietes is in Tokyo, Japan to challenge WBO junior bantamweight champion Kazuto Ioka on Wednesday night at the Ota-City Gymnasium.
The Filipino hero, 40, defeated Ioka in 2018 to win that belt but would soon vacate the title and nearly four years on, he heads into “enemy territory” to take it back.
And Probellum President Schaefer says once Nietes has reclaimed the WBO crown, he will target unification showdowns with the other world champions, including Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez and Juan Francisco Estrada.
“Boxing is like an addiction and it’s very difficult for fighters to let go,” Schaefer said.
“And when you do become world champion again at age 40, who is going to stop you?
“Who is going to tell you that you cannot go and try to pursue a unification fight?
“For a long time, the lower weight classes were the neglected but now that has changed, and today, they are extremely popular with fight fans and networks.
“It’s the right time to be in those weight classes and would I not be surprised if Donnie, once he’s world champion again, says: ‘Hey, I might as well add a few more titles.’”

Vargas Takes Split Decision From Magsayo; Wins WBC Featherweight Title
Rey Vargas became a two-division world champion as he won a hotly contested 12-round split decision over Mark Magsayo in a battle of undefeated fighters at The Alamodome in San Antonio.
It was a very close fight with each guy having success at different part of the fights.
In round seven, Vargas was cut over the left eye from an accidental headbutt. In round nine, Magsayo was able to send Vargas to the canvas as he landed a hard counter right hand. Magsayo was not able to capitalize and he let Vargas off the hook.
Vargas landed 196 of 667 punches; Magsayo was 132 of 451.
Vargas, 125.5 lbs of Otumbia, MEX won by scores 115-112 twice with Magsayo winning a card 114-113. Vargas is now 36-0. Magsayo, 125.5 lbs of The Philippines is 24-1.
“I’m at a loss of words,” said an emotional Vargas post-fight. “I worked hard for this. I want to thank God, my family, my trainer Nacho Beristain. The first title I won, I enjoyed it greatly, but this one is special. This win is for me.”
“It’s his today, no matter what, I’ll come back stronger, I’m disappointed but I did my best,” said Magsayo.
“I just kept moving forward and shrugging him off no matter what was happening,” said Vargas. “All that mattered for me was coming out with the victory in the end.”
“It wasn’t a power punch that got me,” said Vargas. “It was more of something that happened because of how I was moving. We were able to recover and come back strong.”
“When I had him down, the punch was straight, he did his job in the ring, running,” said Magsayo. “I applied the pressure and did what we trained for in the gym, but he was taller and he’s the man today.”
“It was a good, enjoyable fight,” said Vargas. “We felt comfortable throughout. I was sound technically. We were just going round-by-round and we got the result we expected.”
“I will rest and watch the fight and I’m going to train to fight again and will correct my mistakes for the next time,” said Magsayo. “Thanks to all my fans in the Philippines. I did my best and will come back stronger.”
“Now I want the unification bout,” said Vargas. “I want to fight Leo Santa Cruz. We’ve already talked about it with my team and I’m ready.”
Figueroa Stops Castro in 6
Former super bantamweight champion, Brandon Figueroa moved up to featherweight and stopped Carlos Castro in a scheduled 12-round bout.
In round three, Figueroa dropped Castro with a hard flurry on the ropes. That flurry includes a hard left to the body and head. In round six, Figueroa turned Castro around and landed a huge barrage of punches on the ropes and the fight was stopped at 2:11.
Figueroa, 126 lbs of Weslaco, TX is 24-1-1 with 18 knockouts. Castro, 124.5 lbs of Fullerton, CA is 27-2.
“I know Carlos Casto is a crafty fighter,” said Figueroa. “I had to be patient. I knew how to put the pressure on him, after the barrage of punches, I got tired and had to step back. I knew he was hurt. and I had him, and I had to put more pressure on him. I caught him clean with a good looping left hand and I had him, I just put punches together and I dropped him.”
“Carlos Castro has a lot of heart, he’s a proven fighter in the ring and I knew it would be hard to get him out of there,” said Figueroa. “I hurt him, I was waiting for that shot to the body, once I caught him clean, I knew he was hurt. I put my punches together again.”
“I’m pretty proud of myself,” said Figueroa. “I know there’s a lot of work ahead of me, especially if I fight the winner of the main event. I have to study my fight and get back to the gym.”
Martin Stops Marinez in 10
Lightweight Frank Martin remained undefeated with a 10th round stoppage over Jackson Marinez.
In round nine, Martin dropped Marinez from a hard straight left. In round 10, Martin backed Marinez up and landed a booming right that made Marinez sit on the ropes and the fight was stopped at 30 seconds.

“I was ready to go the distance whether I got the knockout or not,” said Martin, who’s stablemate and promoter, unified welterweight world champion Errol Spence Jr. watched his victory ringside and later told Jim Gray of SHOWTIME that he expects to face WBO titleholder Terence Crawford in a blockbuster welterweight undisputed championship fight later this year. “Me and Derrick James worked hard in the gym. It was just a matter of me being patient and not being anxious.”
“I felt great,” said Mariñez. “I was very comfortable inside the ring. It would absolutely have been a different result had I had more than eight days to prepare.”
“I’m just an accurate puncher,” said Martin. “We had to really stay on the outside of the hook, I was doubling the two and trying to come inside with the hook.”
“The knockdown in the ninth changed the tone of the fight,” said Mariñez. “Maybe I could have been more careful. These things happen in boxing, and you just gotta be ready to roll with the punches. He had power, and so did I.”
“I was on him once I had him hurt, I was hungry, he was in deep waters so I had to get him out of there,” said Martin. “I’m right there with those top guys at lightweight, sit me at the table with them, whenever, I’m ready. I’m going to sit down with my team and hopefully get something big. At the end of the day we’ve won them all.”

Those 11 wins were highlighted with victories over Brandon Arvie (11-0), Brandon Cruz (6-0), Adan Ochoa (11-1) and Irvin Gonzalez (14-2). In his last bout, Vazquez was on the wrong end of a very controversial decision as Raymond Ford was awarded a split-decision on February 5th in Phoenix, Arizona.
Most ringside observers, including the DAZN announce crew and a worldwide audience that watched the fight thought that Vazquez deserved to be the winner.
Argel of Carolina, Puerto Rico by way of Santiago, Chile, has a record of 8-3 with two knockouts. The 27 year-old Argel was a former amateur standout in Chile, and won his first eight-bouts. JAKE PAUL TO FACE HASIM RAHMAN JR., SON OF FORMER LEGENDARY HEAVYWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION HASIM RAHMAN, AFTER FURY WITHDRAWS AGAIN
EW YORK – July 8, 2022 – SHOWTIME SPORTS® and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP) today announced that international superstar Jake “The Problem Child” Paul will dramatically step up his level of competition when he faces heavy-handed Hasim Rahman Jr., son of the legendary former two-time heavyweight world champion Hasim Rahman, on Saturday, August 6live on SHOWTIME PPV (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) from Madison Square Garden in New York City in a cruiserweight bout scheduled for eight rounds. Tickets will go on sale July 12 at 1 p.m. ET and can be purchased at www.msg.com.
Paul and Rahman Jr. will go face-to-face for the first time since the announcement of the fight at a press conference on Tuesday, July 12 at 1 p.m. ET at Madison Square Garden to preview their highly anticipated showdown. Amanda “Real Deal” Serrano will be in attendance as well to address her upcoming Unified Featherweight World Title defense against power-punching Argentine Brenda “La Pumita” Carabajal co-headlining the event on August 6. The press conference will stream live on the SHOWTIME SPORTS YouTube channel and Jake Paul’s YouTube channel.
Rounding out the SHOWTIME PPV undercard are separate bouts involving two of the sport’s most exciting and rapidly rising prospects. Unbeaten knockout artist Brandun Lee (25-0, 22 KOs) and quick-fisted Ashton Sylve (7-0, 7 KOs) will look to take the next steps in their accelerated developments before Paul and Rahman Jr. settle their differences, and Serrano defends her Featherweight belts.
“Fury fumbled the bag for the second time in a row and went into hiding, so I’m going to step up, again, and take on a new opponent on short notice,” said Paul. “Nothing but respect for Hasim Rahman Jr., a professional heavyweight boxer with a 12-1 record who comes from a legendary boxing family. He’s bigger, he’s stronger and he’s more experienced. But guess what? I’m crazier. I’m raising the stakes and on August 6, I will get my respect under the bright lights of Madison Square Garden.”
The 6-foot-3 Rahman Jr., who has fought as heavy as 278 pounds and has campaigned exclusively at heavyweight in his pro career, steps in for Tommy Fury, who withdrew from a bout with the famous influencer for the second time in eight months.
“Jake Paul and I sparred two years ago and let’s just say I took it easy on the kid,” said Rahman Jr. “August 6 is not a sparring session. I am going to separate him from God’s conscience. My name is Hasim Rahman Jr., and I am going to knock out Jake Paul. Period.”
Paul (5-0, 4 KOs) and Rahman Jr. (12-1, 6 KOs) are familiar with one another from their days as sparring partners. Rahman Jr. helped Paul prepare for his pro debut against AnEsonGib, which Paul won in spectacular fashion via first-round knockout in January 2020. When Rahman Jr. sparred Paul again to help him get ready for his second fight against the NBA slam dunk champion Nate Robinson later that year, Rahman Jr. praised his opponent for improving both his technique and punching power. Paul detonated a right hand that knocked Robinson out in the second round of their bout.
Rahman Jr. is inarguably the most experienced boxer on Paul’s professional resume. Rahman Jr. studied his craft under the tutelage of famed trainers like Emanuel Steward and Calvin Ford, learning how to fight ambidextrously, something his famous father never did. After growing up in the sport, Rahman Jr. amassed around 100 amateur fights, winning the prestigious Junior National Golden Gloves and Junior National Police Athletic League championships. Rahman Jr. turned pro in 2017 and jumped out to a 12-0 record with six knockouts, showcasing deft footwork and heavy hands.
In his most recent bout in April, however, Rahman Jr. was stopped controversially in the fifth round by James McKenzie Morrison, son of former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison. When the referee waived off the fight with Rahman Jr. on his feet, Rahman Jr. complained bitterly in the ring that he should have been allowed to continue against Morrison, who improved to 20-0-2 with 18 KOs.
Now, Rahman Jr. steps into this high-profile SHOWTIME PPV main event bout at Madison Square Garden with hopes of notching a turnaround win in the same fashion as his famous father and namesake. After suffering knockout losses in 1998 and 1999, Rahman stormed to prominence in 2001 when he decked Lennox Lewis with an overhand right in the fifth round to win the Unified Heavyweight World Championship in South Africa. In 2005, Rahman became a two-time heavyweight champion when he won a vacant title against Monte Barrett.
Lee, 23, has won 15 of his last 16 fights by knockout and has shown both one-punch power and the ability to out-box his opponents. He most recently dominated tough veteran Zachary Ochoa in April and has quickly established himself as one of the most talented 140-pounders in the division.
Sylve, 18, is the first prospect signed by MVP and already finds himself boxing on the biggest stage in the world at Madison Square Garden on SHOWTIME PPV. The undefeated teenage sensation has stopped all of his opponents inside of four rounds with his quick-trigger reflexes, high boxing IQ, and heavy hands. He recently knocked out Giovanni Gutierrez in the first round in May during his MVP debut at lightweight.
The Paul vs. Rahman and Serrano vs. Carabajal event is co-produced by SHOWTIME PPV and Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), a company founded by Paul and Nakisa Bidarian. Holden Boxing will be the licensed promoter of the event, and Paul and Bidarian will serve as executive producers for the event. The pay-per-view telecast is produced and distributed by SHOWTIME PPV.
