Here is what the workout participants had to say Tuesday from Wild Card Boxing Club:
JAIME MUNGUIA
“Camp is going very well. Hands down, this has been my best training camp. Working with the legend Freddie Roach has really motivated me. He has my confidence very high and has helped me so much.
“When I first got this fight I was excited because I know how big of an opportunity this is. I would just tell everyone that I’m 100% ready for this fight.
“Not only is this big for boxing, but it’s huge for my country. I can’t wait to represent Mexico in the ring on May 4.
“I’m very happy about this opportunity. I’m excited because there’s no better way to represent the Mexican fans than competing on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas.
“Training with Freddie has been great. He’s brought a lot of peace and tranquility to my corner. He’s a wise trainer with a lot of experience.
“Any fight at this level is going to be a hard fight, but I really believe that this is going to be an exciting fight and a memorable one.
“I’m going to go in there to do my job. I don’t care what anyone on the outside says. At the end of the day, I have to stay ready and make the most of this opportunity.
“I’ve always kept an eye on Canelo, even when we were in different weight classes. Eventually you have to fight the best in your division and that’s where we are right now.
“I respect Canelo as a fighter, but when you step into that ring with me, I’m gonna do my best to do my job and get my hand raised.”
OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions
“Canelo is going to come out guns blazing, but there’s a changing of the guard in every era and I think that this is the perfect scenario for Jaime Munguia to take over.
“Jaime is ready to go. He’s faced every adversary and every style. Whether they brawl or box, he’s taken them out. Now he’s ready for the biggest fish in the sea.
“Jaime has the youth, the punch output and the chin. I see all the cards stacked against Canelo.”

Sampson Boxing Signs Undefeated Super Bantamweight Bryan Acosta to an Exclusive Multi-Year Promotional Contract
April 23, 2024 – Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing proudly announces the signing of undefeated super bantamweight prospect Bryan “Latino” Acosta to an exclusive multi-year promotional contract.
Acosta (20-0, 8 KOs) is a skilled counterpuncher with a dazzling boxing skill. Hailing from the traditional boxing hotbed of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico and raised in the U.S. until he was nine, the 25-year-old Acosta turned professional in 2016 and won his first title, the WBC Continental Americas Featherweight Championship with a tenth-round TKO over fellow Mexican Benito Sanchez Garcia in May of 2022.
Another significant victory for Acosta doesn’t appear on his official record because of the AIBA’s controversial history, however, earlier this month, he dropped and knocked out fellow prospect Alberto “Impacto” Melian of Argentina in the eighth round for their IBA American Championship.
“I knew that knocking out Melian would open doors for me and now I’m signing with Sampson. He will take me on the right path and get me the necessary fights to become world champion,” said Acosta. “I’m looking forward to continuing my march to the top, now with the right team at my side.”
Acosta’s trainer, Alfredo Caballero, says entrusting his fighter’s promising career to Sampson Boxing is a matter of faith.
“I am very happy to work together with Sampson Boxing,” said Caballero. “I had waited for the opportunity, and I know that God’s timing is perfect, and this is the right time to sign.”
“Welcome to the Sampson Boxing family,” said an excited Sampson Lewkowicz. “Bryan Acosta is a future world champion with a fan-friendly style that the audiences will love. I’m happy to be working with him and his team and look forward to helping this young man achieve his goal of becoming a world champion.”

Defending champion Billam-Smith (19-1, 13 KOs) will be looking to avenge his only career defeat when he makes the second defence of his WBO World Title against big punching South Londoner and Crystal Palace fan Riakporhe (17-0, 13 KOs).
‘The Gentleman’ captured the WBO World Title in May 2023 with a memorable win over former stablemate Lawrence Okolie, downing the undefeated champion three times en route to having his hand raised in front of his home fans at the Vitality Stadium in Bournemouth.
Riakporhe will get his long-awaited shot at world honours in front of his fellow ‘Eagles’ as the Crystal Palace fan fights at South London’s historic Selhurst Park stadium.
‘The Midnight Train’ is the only man to hold a win over Billam-Smith in the professional ranks. The pair first squared off at the O2 Arena in July 2019 for the WBA Intercontinental Title with Riakporhe judged to have got the better of his cruiserweight rival and awarded a split decision win.
Fans attending the huge GAME ON! show will be part of history as boxing returns to Selhurst Park in its centenary year.
The epic Chris Billam-Smith vs Richard Riakporhe clash kick-offs a huge summer of world-class sport with a blockbuster night of world championship boxing and celebrations. Undercard fights will be revealed in the coming days.
A percentage of every ticket sold will be donated to the Palace For Life Foundation, the official charity of Crystal Palace F.C, which has been working with the community for over 25 years, helping young people grow through the power of sport, inspiring them to find a better path in life and to lead a healthier life.
Chris Billam-Smith said: “I’m looking forward to giving the Bournemouth fans an away day to remember with an explosive performance, live on Sky Sports. Richard is a good fighter, but I’ve improved hugely since we last met and he’s going to be in for a terrible night at Selhurst Park. The WBO belt is coming back with me to Bournemouth.”
Richard Riakporhe said: “My time has come. The countdown is on. I’m the runaway ‘Midnight Train’ that you cannot stop and it’s the end of the line for Chris Billam-Smith. I can’t wait to knock Chris out and take his title. I’ve beaten him once and I’m ready to do it again. This time it’s not going to the judges. He’s going to be out cold on the canvas and the world title is going to be staying in South London.
“It’s going to be an incredible feeling to fight at Selhurst Park in front of the Palace fans and to be part of a special moment for the club celebrating 100 years since the stadium opened. I’m proud to be from South London and be affiliated with a club like Crystal Palace. The support of the club and the fans means everything to me. I’m going to repay that support with a devastating performance on June 15th.”
BOXXER Founder and CEO Ben Shalom said: “We’re delighted to be working with Steve Parish and the team at Crystal Palace F.C to deliver a historic night of boxing at Selhurst Park as part of the stadium’s centenary celebrations. We have a huge main event with Chris Billam-Smith and Richard Riakporhe going toe-to-toe for the WBO World Cruiserweight Title in this summer showdown.
“Chris Billam-Smith has huge support on the south coast, and we expect the AFC Bournemouth faithful to travel in huge numbers to support him as he puts his WBO World Title on the line against the only man to beat him. It’s a dream come true for Richard Riakporhe as he gets his World Title shot in front of his fellow Crystal Palace fans at Selhurst Park. With more big fight announcements to follow, this is the event in British Boxing not to miss this summer.”
Crystal Palace Chairman Steve Parish said: “We are absolutely delighted that professional boxing is returning to Selhurst Park, with one of south London’s own and big Palace fan, Richard Riakporhe, leading the billing alongside Chris Billam-Smith.

Boxing Insider Promotions to showcase local favorites and promising prospects on its May 11 card on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City
There was a time when Atlantic City was the center of the boxing universe, and the Tropicana was one of the real hot spots along the Boardwalk.
Those days are about to come back!
On Saturday, May 11, Boxing Insider Promotions brings professional boxing back to the Tropicana Showroom for the first time in seven years, and this show has a local flavor.
Larry Goldberg, CEO of Boxing Insider, is an Atlantic City native, so he knows those glory days as a boxing mecca quite well. He’s been honing his promotional craft in Manhattan’s Times Square district with regular shows at the legendary Sony Hall. Those cards brought some of the best young talent in the New York City area together.
“For our first show in Atlantic City,” promoter Larry Goldberg said, “it was important to keep tickets reasonably priced, starting at $60.00. We have a full slate of top prospects from New Jersey and New York in a throwback to club fight cards from the past generation. I hope everyone in the area who enjoys watching live fights will be at The Tropicana on May 11th to support the next generation of fighters.”
Atlantic City junior middleweight Justin Figueroa (8-0, 6 KOs) is in one of the featured bouts. Local fans may remember Figueroa’s days as a football star at Holy Spirit High School, and he also proved himself to be the best in South Jersey as an amateur. Beaming with confidence, he recently returned from San Antonio, where he registered his eighth straight pro win, a decision over Christian Aguirre, and as usual, he celebrated by dancing “The Worm” across the ring.
The charismatic Figueroa, who’s also put in several years as a lifeguard, is a local boy through and through. He says his mission is to “put Atlantic City on my back” and he can take another step toward that objective on May 11.
Junior featherweight John Leonardo (10-1-1, 4 KOs) is in an eight-round bout and he brings a healthy contingent of fans with him. Hailing from nearby Manalapan Township in the Garden State, he’s a former New Jersey Golden Gloves champ who goes by the nickname “Bodyshot.”
Leonardo went eight rounds in his last fight, winning a decision over Dominique Griffin. But that was back in August, so he’s hungry to get back into the ring again. He’ll do so against Frank Gonzalez (12-5, 6 KOs), of Tampa, who has gone eight rounds in each of his last two fights.
Brooklynite Pryce Taylor (3-0, 2 KOs), an intriguing heavyweight prospect, will also be in action on this show in a four-rounder. Taylor is one of the participants on this card who has also competed on the Boxing Insider shows at Sony Hall, winning a decision over Antonio Torres on March 7.
Another May 18 contestant who’s been at Sony Hall is middleweight Jacob Solis, who debuted there back in December, and is now 3-0 with all the victories coming by knockout.
There are other great prospects in action. Junior welterweight Dwyke Flemmings (6-0, 6 KOs) is a powder keg out of Paterson, NJ, who has recorded four one-round knockouts and will be in a scheduled six-rounder; middleweight Famous Wilson (4-0, 2 KOs) is a former New York Golden Gloves champ who is in a four-rounder. Other four-round contestants include super middleweight Joel Telles (2-0, 2 KOs), of Brooklyn, and lightweight Koby Williams, also of Brooklyn, a NY Golden Gloves and Metro champ who will make his professional debut.

Haney-Garcia: Throw away the book
By Norm Frauenheim –
It was a moment that summed up a fight that is interesting, even intriguing for reasons still hard to read.
Ryan Garcia threw away a book.
It was a response to a mocking gesture, a paper-back from Bill Haney.
The title: Psychology For Dummies.
Garcia flung it into an audience full of dummies at the final news conference for the contentious Devin Haney-Garcia fight Saturday (DAZN, 5 pm PT/8 pm ET) at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Garcia, who was wearing what looked to be a flak jacket throughout the live-streamed newser, didn’t smile. It’s safe to say he didn’t get the joke.
There haven’t been a whole lot of laughs throughout the build-up before the bout for Haney’s junior-welterweight title.
Garcia has been throwing away a lot of proverbial books in an erratic path to opening bell. The book on trash-talk-at-its-best is to do it with a wink and a clever smile.
Bill Haney, Devin’s father and trainer, might have had that in mind when he arrived at the podium and delivered the sly punch-line, perhaps as a way to take off some of the anger on the fight’s sharpening edge
But it looked as if Garcia didn’t get the message. He still looked angry, a fighter fighting himself with a look he’s had throughout a bizarre succession of taunts, threats and temper tantrums posted on social media.
There’s no shortage of opinions about what he’s doing. From crazy to calculated, everybody has one, including this corner. We’re all dummies. Maybe, that’s why Garcia tossed that book into the crowd. Only he knows.
“Something is wrong with this m-effer,’’ Haney said Thursday at the end of the newser, which did not include the traditional face-to-face ritual for the cameras.
But Haney, whose eyes were hidden by sunglasses throughout, couldn’t say exactly what was wrong. Maybe, his dad should have given his son a copy of that book, too.
The prevailing diagnosis is that Garcia’s wild, often dark rants are in fact a tactic – his way of confusing and angering Haney so much that he’ll make mistakes –leave himself open for a big left hand — in a foolish pursuit of an early stoppage.
By when has Haney ever fought that way? At 25, he’s already known as cerebral. The book on Haney is that he’s guided by poise and discipline.
There was a sign, perhaps, that Garcia was getting to him earlier this week when both faced off for the media at the top of the Empire State Building. Haney appeared to reach for Garcia’s throat. Then, he shoved him.
But Haney did the same thing against the accomplished Vasiliy Lomachenko at the weigh-in before their fight last May in Las Vegas. He nearly shoved Lomachenko off the stage.
The next night, Haney’s poise prevailed in scoring a unanimous decision over the skilled Ukrainian. The scorecards were debatable. But Haney’s discipline was not.
Against Garcia, Haney faces a different dynamic. His hands are fast. The power in his left is lethal. He’s explosive. But what happens if Haney’s disciplined defense eludes his early assaults? What does Garcia do next? More anger won’t get it done.
Garcia’s posts have been condemned and countered, evaluated and analyzed. You see the anger, but no patience.
Whatever the conclusions, it’s beginning to look as if Garcia is performing for his social media universe, a place never known for patience or accountability.
Only Gallup can count the number of Garcia followers. They’re hard to ignore, especially for any promoter. But they’re even harder to control. Garcia used to run them, but increasingly it looks as if things have switched. They’re running him, demanding more and more, all in the blink of virtual time.
“Social media and reality are two different things,’’ Garcia promoter Oscar De La Hoya said in a DAZN interview before Garcia and Haney arrived for Thursday’s newser.
They are, or at least they should be.
But the reality is also this: Without some newfound patience in Garcia, Haney will teach him that social media is not a skill set.

BEKTEMIR “BEK” MELIKUZIEV, WBA INTERCONTINENTAL TITLEHOLDER:
“Hello everyone. Thank you so much for being here. I want to thank Oscar for this opportunity, thank Bernard for this opportunity and it’s a huge show. I’m glad to be a part of it and you know when I’m in the ring it’s Bully Time. Let’s go Saturday!”
JOHN “SCRAPPY” RAMIREZ, FLYWEIGHT WORLD TITLE CONTENDER:
“That’s when opportunity meets preparation. I have been boxing for 7 years. My main mission was to become a world champion. I didn’t care about the amateurs. I had to do it and I did it. But no, I’m here. I’ve been consistent and persistent chasing the dream. I sacrificed a lot. I haven’t cut corners; I’ve been disciplined, and this is the life that I chose.”
CHARLES “BAD NEWS” CONWELL, SUPER WELTERWEIGHT CONTENDER:
I’m excited. I’m back in the ring after a long layoff. I prepared very and someone has to pay for that. I’m just excited to be here and let’s make it happen.

Known for his resilient mentality, Valdez came back stronger by winning the interim WBO super featherweight title versus Australian puncher Liam Wilson, which took place on March 29 at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona, in front of a pact audience that came out to support Valdez

Here is what the fighters had to say Wednesday from Pier 5 at Bayside Marketplace:
NATE DIAZ
“If the last fight would of continued and gone to the end, this would be my city.
“He won the first fight, but I’m back for more. So that’s what’s popping. This is a new fight and I’m here to win.
“I expect him to do what he’s gotta do in there. He’s got a good coach and he’s doing what he’s supposed to do training, but I’ve been doing this a long time. We’ll see how it goes for him.
“I’m preparing for a way tougher fight from Jorge than I had against Jake Paul. 100%. Jorge is as experienced as it comes, so I’m ready for what he’s bringing. But having those rounds helped for sure.
“All I know is that we’ve been trying to make this rematch happen for a long time. He was the biggest opportunity in the game.”
JORGE MASVIDAL
“I respect what Nate’s done in his career, but that goes away when we step in that ring. I only have one thing on my mind. I’m gonna put an end to this rivalry.
“I owe it to this city more than anything to go out with a W, and several of them. I’m in a really good place now and have to come back and get those W’s for this place right here. Do or die.
“I want to take the judges and referees and doctors out of it and leave it up to my hands and get him out of there Kimbo Slice style. Dade County style. These people here want that violence.
“It’s a badge of honor to face someone who’s willing to put it all on the line. That being said, I’m gonna end this guy on June 1.
“This BMF belt shows that if you get after it, you can get it done. It doesn’t matter who you are, you just gotta put aside the nonsense.”
