Re-energized pound for-pound debate full of possibilities

By Norm Frauenheim-

Andre Ward’s surprising retirement, Roman Gonzalez’ sad defeat and the scorecard controversy still brewing over the Gennady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez draw is re-energizing the pound-for-pound debate and generating renewed optimism about a resilient business known for comebacks.

It’s always best to be cautious about whether another comeback is on the horizon. Adelaide Byrd’s crazy card favoring Canelo by a bewildering eight-point margin on Sept. 16 serves as a clear-and-present warning. It reminds me of an old line from Hall of Fame writer Michael Katz. To wit: Only boxing is killing boxing.

Nevertheless, some intriguing elements are beginning to fall into place for some real momentum going into 2018. Even Adelaide’s Byrd-brain card might prove to be a good thing. It all but ensured that there would be a rematch in what looks to be a headline-grabbing rivalry until at least next May and perhaps beyond. There are plenty of reasons to question — even suspect — Byrd’s scoring. But only a rematch can provide an answer. That’s good for business.

So, too, is the slow, yet still painful move away from the pay-per-view business model. The numbers just can’t be believed any more. The buy rate has been corrupted.

The only relevant number in a Guccifer 2.0 era full of Russian hackers, bots, Trump tweets and pirates is the rip-off rate. The move toward bouts on ESPN and Showtime without the PPV tag is already underway. Early indications are that it is working. It has to.

The idea is to introduce young fighters, fighters from Eastern Europe and Central Asia to an emerging audience of young fans armed with cutting-edge tech and seeking new ways to watch. They’re seeking new fighters, too. Ward was good, even great in an old-school kind of way. At 32-0, he has a Hall of Fame resume.

It also fair to wonder whether he won’t be at least tempted to try his luck at heavyweight, a la Roy Jones Jr. But the guess here is that Ward knows he’s just not big enough to contend with Anthony Joshua, 6-foot-6 and 27, or Deontay Wilder, 6-7 and 31. Ward formally notified the acronyms this week that he was vacating his light-heavyweight titles. Now 33, he’ll look around at the younger generation in a year or two and probably decide to stay retired.

Ward’s retirement creates a vacancy – maybe even a breath of fresh air – at the top of the pound-for-pound debate. He was a terrific boxer, subtle and smart. Yet, he was never a big draw, in part because of inactivity brought on by promotional trouble. He also had something of an artistic temperament, meaning that he approached each bout more as a craftsman than a salesman.

He was fun to watch, but you had to know what you were watching. Same with Roman Gonzalez, a master craftsman who is the lightest fighter to ever occupy the pound-for-pound’s top spot. Gonzalez’ fight to draw a big crowd was complicated by the simple fact that he’s a little guy, a flyweight whose ascent up the scale was stopped by successive losses to junior-bantamweight Srisaket Sor Rungvisai.

There’s a reason for weight classes and that was evident in the Gonzalez defeats. Evident, too, was a fighter who seemed to have lost his way, if not his will, in the wake of trainer Arnulfo Obando’s death.

Time, tragedy, simple physics and circumstance have eliminated them from the top of the argument. In their place, there is a youth movement, at least there is in this pound-for-pound edition.

At No. 1: Terence Crawford. He’s slick, quick, instinctive and appears to have a mean streak. He dominated junior welterweight and the guess here is that he will do the same at welter. There are questions about whether he can draw in locales far from his fans in Omaha. On PPV, no. On ESPN, yeah. Without PPV limits, more fans will get a chance to see just how good he is and how much better he’ll soon be.

No. 2: Mikey Garcia. He’s smart and as efficient as any fighter in a long while. I’m not sure the lightweight champion can beat Crawford at a heavier weight (147 pounds) or junor-lightweight Vasily Lomachenko (more on him later) at his own weight, 135. But it looks as if the economical Garcia does what he has to, which might mean we haven’t seen most of what he can do.

No. 3: Lomachenko. He’s part wizard and part Ali. At least, that’s how promoter Bob Arum and others have portrayed him. At 130 pounds, I’m not sure anyone can beat him, but he faces an intriguing Dec. 9 challenge from Guillermo Rigondeaux, anther master craftsman, yet dismissed as boring. Rigondeaux is jumping up in weight, from 122 pounds, to face Lomachenko in an unprecedented bout between double Olympic gold medalists. Can the Cuban beat the Ukrainian? Maybe not, but he has the skillset to challenge him, or at least show somebody else how to beat him.

No. 4: Golovkin and Canelo in a tie. Or was that a draw? If Canelo learns from the debatable draw the way he learned from a loss to Floyd Mayweather, he should win against GGG, who is 35 and will be 36 at opening bell of the projected May rematch.

No. 5: Joshua. Maybe, Joshua belongs in the second five for now. But he is the possible face of the very future that is apparent in autumn of the year before boxing’s potential comeback. He is drawing huge crowds in the UK. Boxing has always been defined by the heavyweights. No real comeback is complete without one and Joshua might be the one.

Two-Time World Champion Demetrius Andrade Battles Undefeated Alantez Fox

New York, NY. (Sept. 28, 2017) – Undefeated two-time junior middleweight world champion, Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade makes his return to HBO® when he takes on undefeated Alantez Fox in a 12 round middleweight bout that will take place on Saturday, October 21st from Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, New York.

The bout will be the live co-feature of an HBO Boxing After Dark tripleheader card that will feature Jazreel Corrales defending the WBA World Super Featherweight Title against undefeated Alberto Machado and Ryan Burnett taking on Zhanat Zhakiyanov (tape delay) in a Bantamweight Unification Bout. The HBO telecast will begin at 10:05 p.m. ET/PT.

The Corrales vs. Machado bout is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions.

The Andrade – Fox bout is promoted by Banner Promotions, Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing and A-Team Promotions, in association with DiBella Entertainment.

Andrade of Providence, Rhode Island was a 2008 United Sates Olympian, and the 2007 World Amateur Champion. His success has continued in the professional ranks, as he has a perfect professional resume with a record of 24-0 with 16 knockouts.

Andrade, 29 years-old captured the WBO World Junior Middleweight crown with a 12-round split decision over fellow Olympian and previously undefeated Vanes Martirosyan on November 9, 2013. Andrade defended the title with a sensational 7th round stoppage of mandatory challenger Brian Rose.

On March 11, 2017, Andrade became a two-time world champion when he won the WBA World Junior Middleweight Championship with a 12-round split decision over reigning champion Jack Culcay in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

Fox of Forestville, Maryland has a undefeated mark of 23-0-1 with 11 knockouts.

The 25 year-old Fox stands 6’4″, and he has used that height to score impressive victories over Kenneth McNeil, Ronald Montes, Paul Valenzuela Jr., and previously undefeated Patrick Day.

“First of all I need to thank HBO, and especially Peter Nelson for giving me this tremendous opportunity. Thanks to him, I get a chance to not only have a great fight on October 21st, but I also get to show my fans on prime time that I’m the best fighter in the junior middleweight and now the Middleweight division, “said Andrade. “I can’t wait for the chance to fight more often and against the very best and thanks to HBO I finally have that chance! And I’m looking forward to giving my fans a great performance and I’m going to show them how much I appreciate their support by giving them a great show!”

“The Olympics were ten years ago. He is not the same fighter. I don’t see anything that he will do that can put a loss on my record. I am going on HBO to put on a boxing exhibition,” said Fox.

“I am very happy for Demetrius to be back in the ring on HBO. There are a lot of compelling fights that could take place on HBO for Demetrius’ future career,” said Artie Pelullo, President of Banner Promotions.

“We are very pleased to have Demetrius back in the ring on HBO,” said Joe DeGuardia, President of Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing. “I have always felt that Demetrius is one of the best fighters in the world, and I feel he has a very bright future.”

“Alantez Fox is a tall, rangy, powerful, and undefeated middleweight contender,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “Boo Boo Andrade is a great fighter, but we believe that Fox is up to the challenge.”

STATEMENT FROM GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS AND GGG PROMOTIONS ON REPORTS OF CANELO-GOLOVKIN PAY-PER-VIEW NUMBERS

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 28, 2017) While everyone at Golden Boy Promotions and GGG Promotions appreciate the media’s recognition that the fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was an enormous success, the figure that is being cited by some news outlets is simply inaccurate.

Not only are satellite operators and cable companies still in the process of compiling data, that number does not include online PPV sales through RingTV.com, Sony Play Station, and Sling TV which far exceeded any previous fight featuring Canelo or Golovkin. The bottom line is that we expect the final numbers to be well north of current reports, and we will make a decision on reporting those numbers when we know they are accurate.

ENNIS, LEE AND DARANYI BACK IN ACTION OCTOBER 14TH IN WASHINGTON DC

WASHINGTON, D.C. – September 28, 2017 – Three of Victory Boxing Promotions’ top prospects return to the ring on October 14th at Eastern Market National Hall in Washington, D.C., after seeing a very busy year to date. Jaron “Boots” Ennis (15-0, 13KO), Brandun Lee (6-0, 5KO) and Adam Daranyi (12-0, 11KO) all look to keep the momentum moving as they enter the last part of the year. The trio are managed by Cameron Dunkin.

Ennis and Lee both secured wins in Hammond, Indiana last weekend. Ennis faced Lionel Jimenez in a scheduled six round bout that didn’t make it past the first round. At 2:43 into the first round, referee Kurt Spivey called a halt to the action, protecting Jimenez from his formidable opponent. Fellow welterweight Brandun Lee also made a quick night of it, stopping Anthony Crowder just over one minute into the first round after a fiery exchange of punches caused Crowder to take a knee. The bouts were the seventh and sixth, respectively for the Victory Boxing Promotions prospects.

Daranyi is also coming off a knockout win. He stopped North Carolina veteran Andre Baker in the sixth round of their bout last July.

“This a great opportunity to catch a few of tomorrow’s champions on one card,” said Victory Boxing Promotions’ Founder and Promoter Chris Middendorf. “We’ve kept them busy, and next year they will be looking at major TV network appearances. These three are must-see talent.”

The Washington DC Card, which is promoted by GQ Promotions, is set to take place at Eastern Market National Hall. Tickets are priced at $80, 60 & 40, and can be purchased by calling (301) 704-2404.

“Showtime” Shawn Porter vs. Adrian Granados Highlights Stacked Undercard for Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz Event On Saturday, Nov. 4 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Presented by Premier Boxing Champions

BROOKLYN- (September 28, 2017) – Former welterweight world champion “Showtime” Shawn Porter will battle Adrian Granados in the featured bout of a stacked undercard for Deontay Wilder vs. Luis Ortiz on Saturday, Nov. 4 at Barclays Center, the home of BROOKLYN BOXING™, in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Unbeaten contender Sergey Lipinets will take on Akihiro Kondo for the vacant IBF Junior Welterweight World Championship to open the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING tripleheader beginning live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Plus, former heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne and former title challenger Dominic Breazeale will meet in a 10-round heavyweight attraction that will stream live on line via SHOWTIME Sports.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and TGB Promotions, are on sale now and can be purchased at ticketmaster.com, barclayscenter.com or by calling 800-745-3000. Tickets can also be purchased at the American Express Box Office at Barclays Center. Group discounts are available by calling 844-BKLYN-GP.

“Deontay Wilder versus Luis Ortiz on November 4 is the best heavyweight championship fight that was makeable this year, and it will be supported by a tremendous action-packed undercard, televised on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “Shawn Porter versus Adrian Granados is an all-action, fan-pleasing fight that will once again have fans at Barclays Center cheering. Sergey Lipinets is a knockout artist and up-and-coming star, attempting to secure his first world title. Additionally, SHOWTIME will stream other undercard bouts, including what should be a competitive heavyweight title eliminator between top contenders Bermane Stiverne and Dominic Breazeale.”

“Adrian Granados is as tough as they come and while he may lack the name recognition of Porter, he should not be overlooked,” said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. “You look at his record and he has five losses, but those five losses are three split decisions and two majority decisions and the two draws that are split draws. This is another huge opportunity for him. Adrian feels he’s paid his dues and belongs in a fight of this magnitude.”

The 10-round welterweight match against Granados will be Porter’s fourth fight at Barclays Center. Porter won the welterweight title in his debut at the arena with a unanimous decision over Devon Alexander on Dec. 7, 2013. He lost a narrow decision to unified welterweight champion Keith Thurman in a 2016 Fight of the Year candidate in Brooklyn, and scored a TKO victory against former welterweight champion Andre Berto in his last fight on April 22 in front of the Barclays Center faithful.

The 29-year-old Porter (27-2-1, 17 KOs), who was born in Akron, Ohio and now lives in Las Vegas, remains one of the top welterweights in the division and aims to secure another title shot with a strong performance against Granados.

“To be fighting on an undercard for a Deontay Wilder fight is nothing short of excellent,” said Porter. “I’m excited and looking forward to this opportunity. Against Granados I’m getting into the ring with someone who is very established as an amateur and a professional, has great skills and isn’t going to go in there and lay down. That’s always going to bring out the best in me, and that’s always going to create a very exciting match-up. I know that when I do what I’m planning to do, it’s going to be exciting, entertaining and fill the seats.”

Adrian Granados (18-5-2, 12 KOs), of Chicago, is accustomed to tough assignments and is known for delivering exciting toe-to-toe action. The 28-year-old has been in with Felix Diaz, losing a close majority decision in 2014, and then unbeaten Amir Imam, whom he defeated by TKO in 2015 when Imam was the top contender at 140-pounds. Granados went punch for punch with Adrien Broner in his last match, but came up just short, losing a split decision in Broner’s hometown of Cincinnati on Feb. 18.

“I’m very excited to be fighting one of the best welterweights in the world in Shawn Porter,” said Granados. “With our styles it’s going to be fireworks from the opening bell. I was getting ready for a fight in October but when this opportunity arose I jumped at it. It’s a tremendous card to be fighting on with the whole world watching and I’m looking to
put on a great performance.”

The 28-year-old Sergey Lipinets (12-0, 10 KOs) is a former kickboxer from Russia who has been waiting nearly a year for his opportunity to fight for a world championship. Lipinets has only been the distance twice in his pro career and he earned his title shot with an eighth-round knockout of Lenny Zappavigna in a title eliminator last December. In his most recent start, Lipinets stopped Clarence Booth via third-round TKO in March at Barclays Center.

“I feel very privileged to be in the position to fight for this world title,” said Lipinets. “I will prepare to face the best possible fighter on that night and I promise that I will not disappoint. The lights will be bright but I have trained too hard not to leave the ring as a world champion.”

Akihiro Kondo (29-6-1, 16 KOs) will be making his U.S. debut and fighting for a world championship for the first time when he meets Lipinets for the 140-pound title. The 32-year-old Kondo, of Kazo, Saitama, Japan, has won eight straight matches, including five by stoppage. This will be his third fight this year after he stopped Komsan Polsan in March and defeated Yuya Okazaki by TKO in May.

Former world champion Bermane Stiverne (25-2-1, 21 KOs) is coming off a two-year absence from the ring. Stiverne, 38, became the first Haitian-born boxer to win the heavyweight title when he defeated Chris Arreola in May of 2014. He lost the title to Wilder by decision on January of 2015 in Las Vegas. In his last fight Stiverne, who moved from Canada and now resides in Las Vegas, Nev., defeated Derric Rossy via decision.

The 32-year-old Dominic Breazeale (18-1, 16 KOs) was a member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team and won his first 17 pro fights before suffering the only loss of his career when he fell short vying for a title against now-unified champion Anthony Joshua in June of 2016. In his last match, the fighter from of Alhambra, Calif. scored a fifth-round TKO victory over Polish heavyweight contender Izu Ugonoh on Feb. 25 in a memorable slugfest.

CONTACTS:

Yigit and Martin exchange words ahead of historic European title contest

Anthony Yigit (19-0-1, 7 KOs) and Sandor Martin (29-1, 10 KOs) both appeared in a confident mood as they exchanged words at today’s final pre-fight press conference ahead of their European Super Lightweight Championship fight on Saturday at the Solnahallen in Stockholm, Sweden.

Yigit became the first Swedish fighter for 30 years to claim the European strap when he went behind enemy lines to defeat former British Champion Lenny Daws for the coveted blue and gold belt in February, and his maiden defence will be the first time in over 50 years the title has been contested on Swedish soil.

The 26 year-old from Stockholm, who is hoping for a triumphant homecoming, believes he is just ‘too good’ and ‘too fit’ for his Spanish counterpart and is predicting a stoppage victory in the later rounds.

‘’Martin is a good all round fighter,’’ said Yigit. ‘’He can come forward, he can go backyards and he can counter. He can do a little bit of everything, but whatever he does, I can do it better, and I don’t think he is going to be able to withstand my tempo. I think he is going to quit in the later rounds. I’m just too fit and too good for him and I don’t believe he is going to be able to cope with my pace.

‘’I’ve fought abroad a lot. I’ve fought two Danish guys in Denmark, I’ve fought a German guy in Germany and I won the title in London so I’m used to being the away fighter, but of course, it’s always better to fight at home. This is where the title belongs and it will be a great feeling after 50 years to bring the European title back to Sweden and defend it here.’’

Martin has not come to make up the numbers, and the former European Union Champion from Barcelona says he will follow in the footsteps of his compatriots Javier Castillejo and Loli Munoz in securing a victory over his Swedish rival.

”I’m very happy to be here in Sweden and I’m really looking forward to this Saturday,’’ said Martin. ‘’Yigit is a very good fighter both in attack and defence but I believe I have the advantage in both departments. Like Javier Castillejo when he beat Paolo Roberto and Loli Munez when she defeated Mikaela Laurén, Spain will triumph over Sweden again and there will be a new champion!’’

Promoter Nisse Sauerland is expecting a tough fight for Yigit but is backing his fighter to retain his European crown. ‘’We’re delighted to be bringing the European title back to Sweden after 50 years for what promises to be great fight.

‘’Sandor is the mandatory challenger so there was no avoiding him. It’s a battle of the southpaws and he will provide a tough test for Anthony’s first defence. However I believe Anthony has the ability to make a real statement on Saturday night and from there we can start to look towards a World title challenge.‘’

Tickets for the European Super Lightweight title contest between Anthony Yigit and Sandor Martin are available online via www.ticketmaster.se or by calling (+46) 077-170 70 70.

All the action will be shown live and exclusive in Sweden on Viaplay Fighting and TV10. For more information please visit http://www.viaplay.se/figthing

A gold medalist at welterweight at the 2015 European Amateur Boxing Championships, Stanionis has impressed with knockouts in his first three starts since turning pro in April, including a first round destruction of Oscar Valenzuela in September.

Part of the fighting Santa Cruz family, the 21-year-old Santa Cruz put together a four-bout winning streak heading into this year before losing a close fight to Jonathan Arturo Torres in May. A pro since 2015, Santa Cruz fights out of San Gabriel, California and will make his StubHub Center debut when he faces Mexico’s Monrrreal.

HASSAN N’DAM – RY?TA MURATA WBA MIDDLEWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP REMATCH TO BE TELEVISED LIVE FROM TOKYO TO U.S.

LAS VEGAS, NEV. (September 28 , 2017) – The world title rematch between World Boxing Association (WBA) middleweight champion Hassan N’Dam (36-2, 21 KOs), of France, and No. 1 contender Ry?ta Murata (12-1, 9 KOs), of Japan, will be televised live to the U.S. from Tokyo, on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, Sunday, October 22, at 7:00 a.m. ET.

In their previous battle, which took place on May 20, also in Tokyo, N’Dam claimed the vacant world title via a controversial split decision despite getting knocked down in the fourth round and being out-boxed throughout the fight. The decision was considered questionable, leading the WBA to suspend the two judges — Gustavo Padilla of Panama and Canada’s Hubert Earle, who handed in the scorecards – for six months. The WBA also ordered an immediate rematch.

Murata captured the Olympic gold medal in the middleweight division at the 2012 Olympics held in London. It was the first gold medal won by a Japanese boxer since Takao Sakurai in 1964, and also is the first-ever boxing medal in a weight class other than bantamweight or flyweight. Murata also became the 100th gold medalist in Japanese Olympic history. Five of Murata’s last six victories have come by way of knockout.

Ex-CES MMA champ Howard returns Oct. 28th

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 28th, 2017) — Four years removed from his last appearance with CES MMA, Boston’s John “Doomsday” Howard returns to the scene of some of his greatest triumphs next month when he headlines “CES MMA 46” at Twin River Casino.

A 14-time Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) veteran and former CES MMA world champion, the 33-year-old Howard (24-13, 9 KOs) faces submission specialist Roger Carroll (16-15), who’s forced 15 of his 16 victims to tap during his nine-year career. The bout headlines the Friday, Oct. 27th, 2017nationally-televised main card of “CES MMA 46” on AXS TV beginning at 9 p.m. ET.

Tickets for “CES MMA 46” are priced at $40.00, $55.00, $100.00 and $125.00 (VIP) and can be purchased online at www.cesboxing.com, www.twinriver.com, www.ticketmaster.com or www.cagetix.com/ces by phone at 401-724-2253/2254 or at the Twin River Casino Players Club. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Oct. 27th is a homecoming of sorts for Howard, who grew up in the Dorchester region of Boston and attained unparalleled success in Rhode Island, winning all five of his appearances with the promotion between 2012 and 2013 either by knockout or submission, which paved the way for his second stint with the UFC.

Four years and nine fights later, including a brief stint with the World Series of Fighting (WSOF), Howard is finally home, hoping his return to CES MMA helps him achieve his ultimate goal of competing for, and winning, a major world title.

“Having fought 15 years in this sport, I want a big title,” Howard said. “If I can’t get the title, at least a title shot. My whole career, I’ve never had a serious title shot in the big leagues.”

Following a three-fight losing streak during his first stint with the UFC, Howard took his talents to CES MMA, where he captured the promotion’s middleweight world championship and won his next four bouts before a return to the UFC on its Fight Night 26 main card in Boston. Facing long odds, Howard defeated veteran middleweight Uriah Hall by split decision.

Having campaigned at 185 pounds with CES MMA following an earlier stint as a welterweight, Howard returned to 170 the second time around with the UFC, a decision he quickly regretted. At welterweight, Howard finished 2-4 in his next six bouts, including an eye-opening knockout loss to Tim Means — a former 155-pounder — in what ended up as his final fight with the UFC in 2015.

“They granted me a four-fight contract and then I got knocked out by Tim Means and they just canceled my whole contract,” Howard said. “I was really disappointed. That put me in a messed-up bind. It forced me to go take chances and sacrifices I didn’t want to make because I didn’t expect that.

“I wish I stayed at 185,” he continued. “Me going down to 170 as I got older played a role in my career. I wasn’t as healthy as I thought I should’ve been in fights because cutting weight sucked. With the science of cutting weight, you feel like you’ll be bigger, stronger, faster, but I think with a lot of the stuff we’ve learned today, that’s not necessarily the case.”

Though the cuts weren’t enjoyable, Howard’s biggest issue was rehydrating, not losing weight. From time to time, he’d have trouble getting back up to his walk-around weight on fight night, which left him sluggish and unable to perform to the best of his ability.

“It’s kind of a roll of the dice,” he said. “Means, he’s a 155er. He’s a 155 who went to 170 and I’m a big 170 and he still knocked me out. That was a reality check. I never thought I could get knocked out by a guy who can make 155. It was an eye opener. I started thinking maybe I don’t need to cut all this weight to be fighting.”

Having freed himself from the burden of making 170 and facing rehydration issues, Howard received some much-needed mental clarity last summer when, through a series of non-invasive neurological tests, the 13-year vet discovered he had clinical autism.

The diagnosis, according to Howard, explained a lot about his childhood, in which he endured bullying from older students for attending special needs classes. Howard struggled with speech and other social skills, never realizing he was autistic.

“It was a challenge I had to overcome,” said Howard, who also has an autistic daughter. “There are some kids in worse situations than mine. The reason I came out with the story is I felt like it was my responsibility once I found something out, especially when you have a kid with autism. I can say, ‘Listen, I have a case of what you have. Don’t be subject to this. You can overcome and do great things.’

“Look at all I’ve accomplished, and I didn’t even know I had it. I’m on the spectrum now and I’m still going for it.”

As is the case with most new diagnoses, Howard’s didn’t come until later in life. Likewise, his symptoms vary from those of other autistic adults, which is common on the wide-ranging autism spectrum. Howard is also adamant he shared his story to inspire others, not for sympathy.

“It doesn’t matter what disability I have. I’m still moving forward and I want to be treated like the same person you treated me as before you found out,” he said. “I’m the same. I’m not looking for special treatment.

“The story was for the kids suffering. I have a daughter who’s autistic. I want to especially show her and say, ‘Listen, daddy’s on the spectrum. It may not be as bad as you are, but if daddy can do X, Y, Z and have a successful career, don’t think you can’t either. Success is definitely in your path.’ I wanted to be a prime example.”

With newfound clarity on life, Howard is ready to make another run at championship glory in the 185-pound division. Having endured two separate stints with the UFC, he’s in no rush to get back and is open to whatever the sport has in store for him.

“I was a world champion for CES at 185 and when I went to the UFC I beat one of the best 185ers in the division, so that should’ve been proof enough for me to stay there,” Howard said. “That was a reality check. Now my mindset is different. I’m trying to stay at 185 no matter where I go.”

The politics at the UFC level, coupled with his unexpected release from the promotion in 2015, has changed Howard’s outlook. Training with Sityodtong founder Mark DellaGrotte and former UFC vet Tom Egan, among others, Howard split in two fights with WSOF, beating Michael Arrant in June of 2016 and losing a decision to Abubakar Nurmagomedov four months later in October.

Next month’s showdown with Carroll will be his first fight in more than a year, a fitting return for one of CES MMA’s most successful fighters and a founding father of sorts in the promotion earning its well-deserved reputation as a gateway to the UFC.

“I’m real appreciative of what the UFC has done for me. I earned my way there. Throughout my whole UFC career, I never had any easy fights. I had nothing but top tier contenders and that’s why I deserved to get back in when I got there because I belonged there, not because of anything else.

“But, I’ll say this: is the goal to get back there? No. I’ve been there, done that. If I can go somewhere else and make more money, I’ll do that. Right now, I’m going where the money is. That’s the plan.”

“CES MMA 46” also features the return of rising welterweight prospect Gary Balletto Jr. (4-1, 2 KOs) of Cranston, R.I., and the long-awaited professional debut of Oyster Bay, N.Y., welterweight John Gotti III, the grandson of reputed mob boss John Gotti and the son of John “Junior” Gotti.

Lightweight Josh LaBerge (11-6, 5 KOs) of Fall River, Mass., returns to face Jonathan Lemke (6-8, 5 KOs) of Auburn, Maine, and featherweight Dinis Paiva (9-6, 5 KOs) of East Providence, R.I., battles Erie, Pa., vet Brandon Seyler (7-5, 1 KO). Bantamweight Rico DiSciullo (7-1, 3 KOs) of Peabody, Mass., faces Justin King (6-5) of Lawrence, Ind., and Justin Sumter (3-1, 2 KOs) of New Haven, Conn., returns in a lightweight bout against Rahway, N.J., vet Shedrick Goodridge (6-9, 2 KOs).

Also returning Oct. 27th, Providence featherweight Marquis Brewster (3-0) battles Raymond Yanez (4-11, 1 KO) of Marion, Ohio; middleweight Jesse Botelho of Fall River, Mass., makes his professional debut against Brazilian Reginaldo Felix (1-3) and featherweight Pat McCrohan (2-1, 1 KO) of Berkley, Mass., faces Buck Pineau (1-3) of Ashland, Maine. Featherweight Hugh McKenna (1-1) of Syosset, N.Y., makes his professional debut in a separate three-round bout.

CONLAN: “ANCAJAS CAN BE OUTBOXED BY A BIG EUROPEAN, LIKE MYSELF!”

Back in July, Belfast’s Super-Flyweight contender Jamie Conlan got to scrutinise IBF Champion Jerwin ‘Pretty Boy’ Ancajas from ringside, whilst supporting brother Michael in Brisbane, Australia.

The feisty Filippino southpaw, beaten just once in 29 with 18 kayos, appeared ruthless whilst destroying Japan’s Teiru Kinoshita in seven. Conlan faces Ancajas for the World title at the SSE Arena Belfast on Saturday November 18, live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

Here’s what the ‘Mexican’ had to say on his next opponent:

“I got to see the first round and then the final couple of rounds from ringside and Jerwin was very impressive. Studying from close up, rather than on TV you get to hear the thud of a fighters punches. It can be daunting.

For one so small, he’s extremely powerful but he’s not just a brawler and a banger. He started out nice and relaxed, patient in his approach. Like all the top Asian fighters around the weight, he’s extremely tough.

He’s got a good grasp of distance and range and systematically breaks opponents down. Once he gets inside, he’s shown a ruthless finishing instinct. At the post fight press conference, The Japanese kid’s face was in bits. He was mentally and physically f***ed. And Jerwin’s just 25, still to hit his prime.

In Australia, he was training at the same time as my brother Michael who got a good look at him. Ancajas was wearing a sweat suit for every session and there was talk from his camp that he may be moving up.

The Filipinos were meticulous in everything they did and Mick said they were good people, smiling all week, very humble. The world champion requested a photo with Michael, a bloody novice (laughs)!
He has been on my radar for a wee while now. Ancajas was a big underdog when he won the title, beating a very good champion McJoe Arroyo, a former world medallist and Beijing Olympian, over in the Philippines.

I’d be an underdog against any of the champions but, looking at that list, Ancajas might be the weakest of the current crop.

My team need to scrutinise all his tapes and come up with a master plan. At premium level, every fighter is fit and capable. It’s the incidentals like home advantage and tactics on the night that make the marginal differences.

Though Jerwin’s a southpaw, he doesn’t really fight like a southpaw. He’s not a tall, awkward, elusive one. He seems easy enough to hit. He doesn’t fully capitalise on his southpaw advantage.

While he’s used to facing the Asian style, he could probably be out boxed from the outside by a big European, like myself. That’s what I need to do, to win the fight. His manager introduced us and, up close and personal, I was a lot bigger. If Ancajas could drag me into a war, I’d have to go really deep. He drowned Kinoshita. Remaining disciplined would be the key. I don’t have a great track record!

I’m entering this fight with big self-belief that I can bring home the bacon. There’s still a heck of a lot that I’m capable of, that I’ve not yet shown.”

Tickets for Ancajas v Conlan will go on sale on Wednesday 4th October via the SSE Arena Belfast Box Office, www.ssearenabelfast.com and 028 9073 9074.

Further details on ticket prices will be released in the coming days.

Come see us on 9 December, it’s a show you won’t want to miss.”

Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke, former ONE Strawweight World Champion, stated: “I am ready to continue my quest in becoming the best martial artist I can be. I was once at the top, once the champion, and there is nothing I want more than to get back to that status. Whoever I have to face, whoever they put in front of me, better be ready for what I’m bringing into the cage. I am proud to represent Thailand on the biggest international stage of competition.”

Kritsada Kongsrichai, stated: “As a newcomer to this game, it’s definitely something that I have had to learn. The complete set of martial arts, from striking to grappling, is something that requires a great deal of discipline and determination to adapt to. I vow to showcase my improvements in this next bout and show what I plan for my future.”

Sagetdao Petpayathai, stated: “I am in this to prove my skills and my heart as a warrior. It doesn’t matter who I am matched up against. What matters is that I am prepared well and that I am in great physical condition. Everyday I put myself through the rigors of training to become the best martial artist I can be. I am excited for 9 December so that I can get back inside the cage and do what I love.”

Shannon “OneShin” Wiratchai of Thailand is a staple in exciting and memorable battles inside the ONE Championship cage. A mainstay of Bangkok Fight Lab, he trains in various martial arts disciplines at home in Bangkok, including Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. An offensive innovator, Wiratchai likes to be creative with his striking, employing a myriad of unpredictable off-angle elbows and kicks. Wiratchai seeks to continue his winning ways as he headlines ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD in the main event bout against Rasul Yakhyaev.

26-year-old Rasul Yakhyaev of Grozny, Russia is a lightweight martial arts star who has racked up a solid following over his seven year professional career. He is adept in both striking and mat techniques, and is considered a solid contender with tremendous combat skills. A well-rounded warrior, four of Yakhyaev’s victories have come by submission while three have come by knockout. He made his ONE Championship debut in December of 2015, falling to Lowen Tynanes by submission. Yakhyaev now seeks redemption as he takes on Shannon Wiratchai.

Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige is a 28-year-old female atomweight from Bangkok, Thailand. She is of mixed Japanese and Thai heritage, beginning her martial arts training at age nine with aikido and taekwondo. Heavily influenced by her late father who trained in judo, Ishige went on to hone her skills as a martial artist, and turned pro earlier this year. All of Ishige’s victories have ended via impressive submission as she has been able to showcase her impressive grappling skills.

Former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke is a three-time Lumpinee Stadium Muay Thai world champion who has a 8-2 record as a professional martial artist. He is known as a technical striker with quick hands and lightning feet, employing some of the most unique and creative combinations. As a martial artist with over 25 years of competitive experience, Dejdamrong is a seasoned veteran. In his last bout, Dejdamrong defeated the Philippines’ Robin Catalan with his patented knee strikes.

Kritsada “Dream Man” Kongsrichai is a Thai national wrestling champion, and has a 5-3 record as a professional martial artist. He has not gone the distance yet in his young career, having three knockouts and two submissions under his belt. He made his ONE Championship debut in the promotion’s first-ever Bangkok show in May 2016, where Kongsrichai delighted his hometown fans with a spectacular performance, stopping opponent Kev Hemmorlor via first-round technical knockout.

30-year-old Sagetdao Petpayathai is a Muay Thai specialist and a four-time Lumpinee Stadium champion who has won every major title in Muay Thai. He made his professional cage debut last March at home in Bangkok, defeating Malaysia’s Kelvin Ong via first-round technical knockout. Voted by Thai media as one of the greatest Muay Thai practitioners in history, Petpayathai is known for his highly technical knowledge in all of Muay Thai’s varied techniques. In his last bout, Petpayathai stopped Mahmoud Mohamed in the first round to improve his record to 2-0.

DODD: I’LL MAKE STALKER STAND AND FIGHT

Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd says he’ll drag Tom Stalker into a fight when they meet for Dodd’s Commonwealth Lightweight title at the Echo Arena on Saturday night, live on Sky Sports.

Dodd puts the title on the line for the first time against Stalker, who has branded the popular Birkenhead man as ‘terrible’ in a feisty build-up.

‘Masher’ has brushed off the jibes from the London 2012 Team GB Olympic captain as he looks to continue his fairytale rise – and the champion has launched his own attack on Stalker, claiming the challenger will crumble when he drags him into a war.

“The pro game is about fighting and he cannot fight to save his life,” said Dodd. “It’s a tough fight, he was GB captain and he wants the fight so he thinks he can beat me easy. I get the credit from my fans and that’s all that matters to me. I will fight anyone to forward my career, and Tom’s next – he doesn’t respect me now but he will at the end of the night.

“I don’t think that Tom really believes in himself as a pro, because if he did, he would have achieved something by now. He might have believed in himself in the amateurs, but I don’t think he does in the pros and the pro game is about fighting and I don’t think he can fight.

“He can box, he’s a great boxer, but anyone can box for a couple of rounds but this is the fight game where you have to stand there and fight and he doesn’t believe in himself to do that and that’s why he hasn’t done anything as a pro.

Dodd and Stalker clash on a stacked bill on Merseyside as Paul Butler and Stuart Hall rematch in an eliminator for the WBA World Bantamweight title.

Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding defend his British Super-Middleweight title for the first time against Scotsman David Brophy, who puts up the Commonwealth strap he won in fine fashion in Australia in March.

Controversial Hackney man Ohara Davies looks to get back to winning ways as he challenges Tom Farrell for the unbeaten local favourite’s WBA International Super-Lightweight belt.

Two more Team GB Olympians Anthony Fowler and Natasha Jonas fight on home turf for the first time in their second fights in the paid ranks, and there’s also action for Craig Glover.

Tickets are on general sale priced at priced £40, £60 and £100 at www.echoarena.com and on 0844 8000 400 – with VIP tickets priced at £200 exclusively available at www.matchroomboxing.com

Face value tickets for September 30 are also be available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ . StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua

Polish Contender Mateusz Masternak Meets Once-Beaten Stivens Bujaj in World Boxing Super Series Cruiserweight Reserve Match Saturday, October 21 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

NEWARK, N.J. (September 27, 2017) – Hard-hitting Polish contender Mateusz Masternak (39-4, 26 KOs) will battle once-beaten Stivens Bujaj (16-1-1, 11 KOs) in a 10-round World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight reserve match on Saturday, October 21 at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Additional action will feature a 10-round super welterweight bout between unbeaten Polish contender Maciej Sulecki (25-0, 10 KOs) and former title challenger Jack Culcay (22-2, 11 KOs).

The October 21 event is headlined by IBF champion Murat “Iron” Gassiev and former world champion Krzysztof Wlodarczyk squaring-off in World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight quarter-final action.

“This is going to be a fantastic show for fans to come out and get a night full of action on October 21 in Newark, New Jersey,” said Richard Schaefer, Chairman and CEO of Ringstar Sports. “Polish pride will be in full force as Mateusz Masternak and undefeated Maciej Sulecki take on tough opponents in important matchups as they chase their world title aspirations. This of course will all lead up to the main event and the final World Boxing Super Series cruiserweight quarter-final pitting the champion Murat Gassiev against the former champion from Poland, Krzysztof Wlodarczyk.”

Promoted by Ringstar Sports in association with World Boxing Super Series, tickets for the live event are on sale now and are available at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets are also available to purchase at the Prudential Center box office.

“In my top form I know that I can beat better fighters than Bujaj,” said Masternak. “I don’t think he can hurt me. Every fight is important, boxing teaches you that every day. But Bujaj is a stepping stone for me to bigger fights. He is saying that he beat me in sparring a few years ago, but how well could it have gone if he departed faster than he arrived? I have no time to make a mistake and lose a fight like this so I will be ready for anything when we enter the ring.”

Fighting out of Wroclaw, Poland, Masternak has fought a slew of top champions and challengers in the cruiserweight division and enters this fight the winner of his last three contests. The 30-year-old has battled Tony Bellew, Grigory Drozd and Youri Kalenga while also picking up the European cruiserweight championship with a victory over Juho Haapoja. Masternak has fought in nine countries throughout his career and returns to the fight the U.S. for the first time since his fourth pro bout in 2006.

“Get ready to see the best Stivens Bujaj ever,” said Bujaj. “I’ve been training two, sometimes three times a day. I’ve been in this sport since I was 15 years old, and it all comes down to this moment. This is my world championship. It’s going to be the fight of my life and I’m ready to do whatever it takes. I’ve sparred Masternak before and I dominated for eight rounds and they sent me home. I’m ready to finish what I started on October 21!”

An Albanian fighter living in New York, Bujaj was a two-time New York Golden Gloves champion before turning pro in 2010 and going unbeaten in his first 18 pro bouts. The 27-year-old won three times in 2016, including a victory over then unbeaten Sergio Ramirez before dropping a bout to undefeated Constantin Bejenaru. Bujaj has been hampered by injuries during his career but returns to the ring healthy and ready to resume his climb to the top of the division.

Representing Warsaw, Poland, Sulecki pulled off his most impressive victory to date last year when he stopped then unbeaten contender Hugo Centeno Jr. in the 10th and final round of their fight. The 28-year-old has picked up victories over Damiam Bonelli and Michi Munoz since then as he seeks a world title at 154-pounds. Sulecki will return to Prudential Center for the second time after knocking out Jose Miguel Berrio in 2015 at the venue in Newark.

Culcay was originally born in Ecuador but grew up in Germany and in 2008 he represented the Germans at the 2008 Olympics. The 32-year-old was dominant in winning his first 14 pro fights and picking up the WBA inter-continental super welterweight title. Culcay put together another seven-fight winning streak and won the WBA interim super welterweight title before dropping a world title bout to Demetrius Andrade by close split-decision in March.

Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Fighter Spotlight Kevin Asmat: “Why I fight”

North Bergen, NJ: As featherweight and North Bergen, New Jersey-native Kevin Asmat (2-1, 2 KOs) prepares for his upcoming fight against Bronx-native Rafael Castillo Rosendo, who is making his professional debut on the Thursday, October 5 installment of the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series, he will once again work with his long-time trainer, Diego Rosario, and his biggest fan, his father.

Kevin grew up listening to his father talk about his days fighting as an amateur boxer in Peru before he immigrated to the United States 29 years ago. Asmat’s father dreamt of becoming a professional fighter, but after his wife became pregnant with their first child, he opted for a career in law enforcement instead. Kevin explained, “Over there, pros, when they start off, they don’t pay well. But he was very known because of the boxing. They offered him a job in police and stuff. He took the job then boxing just died for him.”

Despite no longer being a fighter himself, the elder Asmat continued to take an interest in the sport, but did not necessarily want his son to follow in his footsteps. According to Kevin, “As I was growing up and he was telling me all his stories. He was showing me how to throw a right hand, how to throw a hook, how to throw a jab. I always asked him, ‘Dad, if you would’ve put me in boxing when I was little, I probably would have been in national teams and everything.’ But he said, ‘I know all the suffering you got to do, all the training you got to do and I rather you not do that. Because I went through that and I don’t want you to go through it.'”

However, as Kevin’s interest in the sport increased, so did his father’s support. “When I first started boxing, I didn’t like getting hit,” said Asmat. “I’m in the contact sport but I don’t like getting cut. I don’t like getting hit. I like keeping my face pretty. My father liked that, so he allowed me to continue. He knew that I would protect myself in the ring. I’m pretty sure that if I was just a Mexican-type fighter getting hit a hundred times, my father would’ve not let me box.”

Now that he has begun his professional career, Kevin trains with Diego Rosario in Paterson, New Jersey but his father still works his corner. He said, “My father helps me and Diego in the corner. He comes to the sparring too. He’s very supportive. He worked my corner as an amateur. I went to the Olympic trials with him. I went to a lot of national tournaments with him. He was in my corner. As a pro, now he’s my second. Diego’s my first and then he comes in the ring with me.”

With his father and Rosario in his corner, Kevin’s confidence continues to grow. He concluded, “As time was going by as amateur, I kept racking up a lot of fights. Then I went to Peru. I made the Olympic team in Peru but they wanted me to stay over there for two years and I didn’t want to do that. I started seeing that a lot of people were turning pro that I had beat. They were making money and I already beat them, like Shakur Stevenson. He went to the Olympics and got a silver medal. When I fought him, I made him look like a regular fighter. If he could win a silver medal and I made him look like a regular fighter, I could do something with this. With my parents support and my family, I knew I could do this.”

About October 5: The Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series hosts its third installment with a rare Thursday Night edition at the Arena at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut. The Main Event features a ten-round middleweight match-up between Rising Stars’ staple Vaughn Alexander and former middleweight title contender Elvin Ayala. Carl Frampton MBE has signed an exclusive promotional deal with Hall of Fame Promoter Frank Warren.

The three-time World Champion will make his highly-anticipated Belfast homecoming at the SSE Arena Belfast on Saturday 18th November, broadcast live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

Frampton, the only Northern Irishman to have won World titles in two weight classes, formally announced his deal at a major press conference at the iconic Ulster Hall in Belfast earlier today.

On the same bill, all-action Belfast hero Jamie Conlan finally has a dream World Title shot. He will be challenging tough Filipino Jerwin Ancajas for the IBF World Super-Flyweight belt.

Hugely-popular Triple Olympian Paddy Barnes will make the first defence of his WBO European Flyweight Championship that he won against Silvio Olteanu at the Waterfront Hall back in June.

Further exciting additions to the undercard will be announced in due course.

“I felt that the overall package that Frank Warren and BT Sport were offering me was the deciding factor,” said Frampton. “I’m desperate to kick on and I’m looking forward to repaying the fans for showing their support in me.

“This is a deal I believe will give me the best chance to have massive fights that I crave and I have been guaranteed that I will be fighting at Windsor Park next summer.

“It’s great to be back in Belfast. We’re still looking at opponents but I’m looking at getting the big boys next year.

“It’s a weight off my shoulders to now have my promoter in place because I’m desperate to kick on and put on a show for the people of Belfast on November 18.

“The boxing business can be tough and it has taken a bit of time for me to get everything sorted out. But now I can look ahead to an exciting final chapter of my career, fighting the best in the World.

“It’s great to have a huge show back in Belfast. Jamie Conlan has been involved in three or four of the most exciting fights I’ve ever seen. He’s a tremendous fighter – all action style. He never makes a fight easy for himself. He would probably admit that himself. He goes to war every single time.

Promoter Frank Warren said: “Make no bones about it, Carl is a massive attraction in the sport and one of just a few where tickets are like gold dust whenever they get in the ring.

“I am thrilled that we have the opportunity to showcase someone of his stature and popularity.

“Being a two-weight world champion, he is already an Irish boxing legend and we want to quickly put him in position to win another world title on his home soil in Belfast.

“Once he has got a good fight under his belt we will push on to Windsor Park, which is where we want to be with him, in a massive night there.

“The signing of Carl gives us a real foothold in Belfast, which is a great territory and one where we will continue to look to build up the local scene.”

Jamie Conlan on World title shot:

“I always loved fighting on Carl’s undercards. The atmosphere is hard to decribe and it has got bigger and bigger. To be involved with a meaningful fight, it’s going to be an emotion I’m going to have to control on fight night. It’s something I’m looking forward to.

“I didn’t get overly excited when I found out this was happening because I’ve been let down in the past but now that I’m sitting at the table, I’ve never been as excited. It’s a big stage, it’s a big atmosphere. It’s a bigger audience than I’ve ever fought in front of. ”

Paddy Barnes on WBO European Flyweight belt defence:

“It’s great to be involved in such a huge event. The way Carl fills out the Odyssey is a brilliant spectacle and I’m honoured to be able to fight on a double World title card that Carl’s on too.

“I still feel that I need to slow down and I’m working on that in the gym In my last fight, I didn’t perform the way I can because I was more focused on doing the rounds. Now I know what it’s about and I’m looking forward to showing my real skill.”

Tickets for Frampton Reborn will go on sale on Wednesday 4th October via the SSE Arena Belfast Box Office, www.ssearenabelfast.com and 028 9073 9074.

Further details on ticket prices will be released in the coming days.

Briedis v Perez Press Conference

WBC World Champion Mairis Briedis (22-0, 18 KOs) and Mike Perez (22-2-1, 14 KOs) faced each other at a press conference in Riga ahead of Saturday’s Ali Trophy Quarter-Final clash at Arena Riga, Latvia.

“It is a great honour for me and for Latvia to have such a big fight and tournament in our country,” said Briedis.

“I am looking forward to showing that Latvia is not only a country with singers and dancers, but also some world class boxing. There are some pressure on my shoulders fighting in front of a sold out arena, but I am sure I can handle it.”

Mike Perez: “I am ready to fight, I can’t wait for Saturday night! It will definitely be a good and exiting fight.”

Responding to a rumour forwarded by a Latvian journallist that he struggles to make weight, ‘The Rebel’ said “I am here, what makes you think I am not going to fight! You will have to see at the weigh-in on Friday.”

Shadeed Suluki, Perez trainer:

“Rumour? We have had a very tight camp, so I don’t know where you have got that rumour from. The only guys who have seen Mike on the scales is the team, and I know who is a part of this team. So where ever you got that rumour they told you a lie.”

Kalle Sauerland, Comosa’s Chief Boxing Officer:

“It is lovely to be in Riga – the hunt for the Muhammad Ali Trophy is well underway. We have had a spectacular start, we have been in some great cities, we have seen some great boxing fans and some great boxing and this weekend we are expecting nothing less! We are looking forward to a totally full arena in Riga, the atmosphere will be amazing I am sure. There will be absolute fireworks between Briedis and Perez, we are going to see some tremendous action, a massive night of boxing that has never been seen in Latvia.”

“Saturday’s fight is not just a normal fight. They are fighting for the WBC world title and the WBC Diamond Belt and a spot in the semi-final for the Muhammad Ali Trophy and a hell of a lot money!”

The weigh-in Friday at 5 pm at the Radisson Spa and Conference Hotel in Riga is open to public and there are still a limited number of tickets on sale at https://shop.piletilevi.ee

Hurricane Maria cancels Lopez – Velez battle

The recent Hurricane Maria that severly damaged Puerto Rico has forced the cancellation of this Saturday’s Juan Manuel Lopez – Jayson Velez fight, according to Dan Rafael.

Also, Gaby Penagaricano, a representative of Black Tiger Promotions, told ESPN that there is no way the card can move ahead with the island facing so many difficulties.

“I have not been able to communicate with the promoter to have an official cancellation announcement. They have not been able to even put a press release out,” Penagaricano told ESPN by email. “However, I am certain the event is not happening. This is a complete disaster over the whole island. No power; very limited water availability; banks closed; limited gasoline supplies; and telecommunications also very limited.”

Canelo – Golovkin does over $27 Million gate

The September 16th Canelo Alvarez – Gennady Golovkin fight generated a gate of $27,059,850 which constitutes the 3rd biggest gate of all-time, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

The fight generated $27,059,850 from 17,318 tickets sold, according to figures released Tuesday by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. There were 934 complimentary tickets given out, according to the commission.

“By drawing the third largest gate in [boxing] history, Canelo has demonstrated once again that he is the top draw in our sport,” Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, Alvarez’s promoter, told ESPN. “And the scary thing is that he’s still only 27 years old. As he continues to engage in the kind of hard-fought battles he had with GGG, Canelo’s popularity will only continue to soar.”
