BENN’S PRO RISE CONTINUES IN MANCHESTER
Conor Benn will box for the ninth time in the paid ranks on the undercard of the all-British Lightweight clash between Anthony Crolla and Ricky Burns at the Manchester Arena on October 7, live on Sky Sports.
Benn moved to 8-0 in impressive fashion a fortnight ago, lighting up his first ever appearance at York Hall with a fierce second round KO over previously unbeaten Kane Baker – a sixth win inside the distance for the son of British legend Nigel.
The 20 year old heads to Manchester for the third time in his pro career and ‘The Destroyer’ says he loves boxing all over Britain as he looks to build his fan-base.
“When British fans back you, they really get behind you,” said Benn. “This is the time to be in boxing.
“Fighting at York Hall was brilliant. I was really nervous because I know the history of the place but the love I got from the crowd was brilliant and it’s a special place.
“He had some dirty tactics and tried to rough me up but that’s good for me at this early stage in my career, it’s all part of the learning curve. He had a full camp for the fight and I stopped him so I think that’s a good statement. I took my time in the first round and got rid of him in the second.”
Benn takes his place on a huge night of action in Manchester, topped by his gym-mate Burns taking on hometown hero Crolla.
Sam Eggington defends his European Welterweight title for the first time against mandatory challenger Mohamed Mimoune, and there’s another maiden defence as Robbie Barrett puts the British Lightweight title on the line against Lewis Ritson the continued rise in the paid ranks of Team GB Rio Olympian Josh Kelly. Benn replaces Joshua Buatsi on the bill after the Olympic Bronze medal man suffered a minor hand injury in his last bout.
Tickets are on general sale tickets priced at £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150 available from www.manchesterarena.com or by calling 0844 847 8000. VIP tickets are exclusively available through www.matchroomboxing.com priced at £250.
Face value tickets for October 7 will also be available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ . StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.

CaneloGolovkin: One loss, many lessons could be a key difference
By Norm Frauenheim-

LAS VEGAS – Canelo Alvarez has something Gennady Golovkin doesn’t want: A loss.
In a time and place when unbeaten often means perfection, defeat is portrayed as more than a blemish. It’s characterized as that fatal flaw. Avoid it at all costs and that’s exactly what Floyd Mayweather Jr. did in a career that made unprecedented money, which defined his identity as much – if not more – than that 0.
But boxing’s elemental drama is rooted in adversity.
How to deal with it.
How to come back from it.
The game’s enduring legends are often built on what they did after defeat. Muhammad Ali might not be remembered and revered without that 1971 loss to Joe Frazier. Sugar Ray Leonard might not be the cornerstone to the legendary ‘80s without that loss to Roberto Duran in 1980.
For Canelo, dealing with defeat is a story that has been unfolding over the four years before his long-awaited middleweight bout (HBO pay-per-view/5pm PT, 8 pm ET) against Golovkin at T-Mobile Arena.
In his first and only loss, Mayweather toyed with him in a humiliation that angered Canelo’s nation of fans, who complained that he didn’t fight like a Mexican.
It was painful then. It was a lesson later. Throughout, it has been an inexhaustible source of motivation for a Mexican whose dark eyes say a lot more about him than his red hair. Like a spark off flint, they flash.
Call it determination, or anger, or more. But its intensity is unmistakable. It’s as if Canelo (49-1-1, 34 KOs) listens to questions, hears the words and looks through all of the rhetoric like a man still seeking to correct the kind of painful loss he never wants to experience again.
Exactly four years after the Mayweather loss on Sept. 14 2013, Canelo trainer Eddy Reynoso and manager Chepo Reynoso sat at a roundtable Thursday in a MGM Grand ballroom with reporters and talked about it.
“Defeat teaches you more,’’ said Eddy Reynoso, who confirmed what everybody has seen in the steady, patient evolution of Canelo.
A young, cocky kid became a serious student. He had to, otherwise he would have been just another forgettable number on the path to the 50-0 that Mayweather will be selling on those T-shirts and caps.
There’s movement in the upper body. There’s a more consistent jab. There are seven straight victories. There’s a sense, too, that nothing will be easy, especially against the accomplished and reigning middleweight champ, GGG (37-0, 33 KOs), who has never lost and never even been off his feet.
“You learn more from defeat, so there is an advantage because it allows you to become a better fighter,’’ Eddy Reynoso said.
Yeah, Chepo Reynoso said.
“As long as it doesn’t happen too many times,’’ he cracked.
Once, of course, is more than enough. But once also might be prove to an unlikely advantage in milestone bout that in the end might be determined by a fighter who has encountered adversity, embraced the lessons, conquered the demons and learned how to use it.
CANELO VS. GOLOVKIN UNDERCARD FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
LAS VEGAS (Sept. 14, 2017) – Fighters on the undercard of Canelo vs. Golovkin hosted a press conference today at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino ahead of their bouts on
Saturday, Sept. 16. In the co-main event, Joseph “JoJo” Diaz, Jr. (24-0, 13 KOs) and Rafael “Big Bang” Rivera (25-0-2, 16 KOs) will face off in a 12-round WBC Featherweight title eliminator. Randy “El Matador” Caballero (24-0, 14 KOs) and Diego De La Hoya (19-0, 9 KOs) will face off in a 10-round super bantamweight battle for the Caballero’s NABF Super Bantamweight title and the vacant NABO Super Bantamweight title. Ryan “Blue Chip” Martin (19-0, 11 KOs) and Francisco Rojo (20-2, 13 KOs) will battle it out for Ryan’s WBC Continental Americas and the vacant WBA Intercontinental lightweight titles in the opening bout of the HBO Pay-Per-View® telecast, which will begin at the special time of 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.
Below is what the fighters and their teams had to say at today’s final press conference:
JOSEPH ‘JOJO’ DIAZ, Featherweight Contender:
“I had a great ten-week training camp. We were supposed to fight Jorge Lara, who was a tough opponent. But unfortunately he ended up pulling out. We’ve got another tough opponent, Rafael Rivera ahead of me. He’s a young undefeated fighter, and I know that he’s going to come out guns blazing and wanting to pull an upset because he’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. I know that with his fighting as the co-main event and getting the exposure, he’s going to come out guns blazing. We’re very prepared for him and I know that it’s still going to be an action-packed fight.”
RANDY “EL MATADOR” CABALLERO, NABF Super Bantamweight Champion:
“Camp went amazing. I felt good. I felt strong and I’m ready to go. Just to be a part of this card is a dream come true for a fighter. I’ve worked very hard. I’ve traveled the world to win a world title abroad. I’m tough toughest fighters he’s [De La Hoya] ever faced. And come Sept.16, I’ll put on a great show. You’re not going to want to miss it, and see you guys there.”
DIEGO DE LA HOYA, WBC Youth World Super Bantamweight Champion:
“This fight is a big step for me that will catapult me towards to a world title. I have prepared me 7 weeks in one of the best camps of my life. And I will give one of my best fights this Saturday. Because I know that Randy [Caballero] prepared himself really well, and he knows that we’re going to steal the show. I am ready, and we are ready, Randy. I’m going to win this Saturday yelling “Viva Mexico!”
RYAN “BLUE CHIP” MARTIN, WBC Continental Americas Champion:
“Going back to March, the the Golovkin-Lemieux card was a big event. But clearly Vegas blows it out of the water. The atmosphere has been amazing. All of the fighters here are going to be amazing. I want to thank my coach, my staff, my manager and my hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee which has given me support since an amateur of 7 or 8 years old. I’ve dreamed of moments like this. Saturday night I’m going to have fun and do my thing. All the hard work is done.”
FRANCISCO ROJO, Lightweight Contender
“I’m grateful to Golden Boy promotions for this opportunity. It’s not an opportunity. It’s a dream. Who doesn’t want to be on a card like Canelo-Golovkin? I’m grateful to be making my US debut on a card like this. We know Ryan Martin is a tremendous talent who is undefeated, and he wants to continue being undefeated. Believe me when is say this, Martin is undefeated but he’s never fought a known opponent, a Mexican opponent like me. I respect him a lot, but it’s my dream to fulfill, and regardless of who he’s fought, they don’t compare to me.”
MARLEN ESPARZA, 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist and Flyweight Prospect:
“I just want to say that I’m extremely honored to be here on such an amazing card. I want to thank Golden Boy and everybody who’s believed in me and supported me. I want to thank my who’s put in a lot of work. This is my third fight now, and I’m only getting better and better. I’m hoping to put on an amazing show. This time I’ll be fighting in six three-minute rounds. II’ve trained really hard for it. I’m hoping it put on a great show. It’s going to be amazing.”
NICOLA ADAMS, 2012 and 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist:
“I want to thank Frank Warren and Golden Boy Promotions Golden Boy Promotions for giving me this great opportunity to make my professional debut in the United States on such an amazing card . The Golovkin-Canelo fight will be one of the best fights in this year. To think I can have my American debut on this card is a really good opportunity. I’m hoping put on a really good performance.”
ERIC GOMEZ, President of Golden Boy Promotions:
“These kids work hard and they dream about being in this position and being in these big show. They are going to have to perform well to be able to win but that’s what they’re ready for. It’s going to be an incredible event. Rising contenders and future contenders will be a part of it. We are going to have a free-view for the show as usual. The free-view will begin at 6:00 p.m. PT/ 3:00 ET on RingTV.com and on the HBO pay-per-view channel. There will be an early start time of 8:00 p.m ET/5:00 p.m. PT. BERNARD HOPKINS, Golden Boy Promotions Business Partner:
“When the smoke clears and we have to recognize what we said-to make the best fights-would actually accord. That’s why we are here. The young guys. This is the opportunity to steal some of the spotlight before the main event on Saturday. This is an invitation We don’t just pay attention to the elite fights, but also to the fighters below who are thirsty to be there.”
TOM LOEFFLER, Promoter of Gennady “GGG” Golovkin:
“We couldn’t be more excited to be here today. We had the grand arrivals on Tuesday. You could already feel the buzz from the beginning of the week from both the media and the fans. Now it’s reaching its fever pitch and we don’t even have the weigh-ins yet. The undercard is very exciting. Both Triple G and Canelo were both in this same position. This type of platform can really launch or give exposure to the fighters on the undercard. We know they’re going to do their best. The pressure is all on them because they know that when they’re on a show like this they have to perform.”

FIGHTNIGHT LIVE TO COMPLETE WEEKEND TWINBILL WITH CES BOXING AT TWIN RIVER CASINO ON SATURDAY

NEW YORK (Sept. 14, 2017) – Three weeks after establishing its first 200,000-viewer audience prior to Mayweather-McGregor, Facebook FIGHTNIGHT LIVE and CES Boxing plan to partner once again this Saturday with a three-hour show leading into HBO PPV coverage of GGG-Canelo. Renowned promoter Jimmy Burchfield Sr. has set the stage with an excellent card filled with local competitors on Sept. 16 at Twin River Casino and the tech-forward, fan-friendly Facebook broadcast platform will carry the action, beginning at 7 p.m., to complete its first “doubleheader weekend” – as FIGHTNIGHT LIVE delivers back-to-back shows on Friday and Saturday.
“For more than 25 years, CES has delivered boxing excitement to fans all over the world. The tradition continued [at Foxwoods on Aug. 26] when we teamed with FIGHTNIGHT LIVE by using cutting edge technology allowing fight fans to view the fights live on Facebook. This historic, record-setting event was the result of a great production team and action-packed, competitive fights,” said CES President Burchfield Sr.
The main event stars two intriguing welterweights battling for championship glory. After defeating Bronx vet Issouf Kinda by knockout in a controversial bout at Foxwoods on Aug. 26, New Haven, Conn., vet Jimmy Williams jumps right back into the fire less than three weeks later to face New Jersey’s “The Beast” Juan Rodriguez Jr. Shortly after his Sept. 16 return was announced, Williams’ wife, Christina, gave birth to twin boys, Logan and Austin. Now 14-0-1 (6 KOs), Williams has won 10 consecutive bouts and Saturday marks the second defense of his WBC USNBC welterweight championship.
Also featured on Saturday night in separate bouts: hard-hitting New England heavyweight Joey Cusumano (11-9, 9 KOs), Anthony Marsella Jr. of Providence (5-0, 2 KOs), Ray Oliveira Jr. of New Bedford, Mass. (7-1, 1 KO) and others.
“We’re extremely proud to watch Facebook FIGHTNIGHT LIVE reach another milestone this weekend, with outstanding shows in New England on back-to-back nights,” said Mark Fratto, Principal and Director of Business Development, Linacre Media. “Fight fans will be fired up for GGG-Canelo – including us – but we’re particularly excited to fulfill our mission to showcase local and regional up-and-coming fighters. We’ll be delivering at least 12 bouts across the two nights this weekend, providing a wide-reaching platform for 24 boxers of varied backgrounds and accomplishments to showcase their skills.”
Over the first five months of programming, the numbers on the FIGHTNIGHT LIVE series have showed promise and potential for the new platform with an average of more than 113,000 fight fans tuning in per event. The Sept. 9 “Real Deal Promotions: Empire State” from Resorts World Casino (224,658), the August “Super Saturday” from Foxwoods (203,000), the July Roy Jones Jr. “Desert Showdown” from Phoenix (63,000), the May “Slugfest at the Sun” from Mohegan Sun (45,000) and the June “Rosemont Rumble” from Chicago (32,000) saw a total of more than 12,700 total hours of Facebook video consumed by 567,000-plus users across all devices.
In addition to the raw viewership numbers, the fully-interactive, fan-friendly productions have seen more than 71,000 collective live post engagements (14,000-plus per show), including more than 40,400 “likes” or “loves,” more than 10,300 comments and 3,200-plus shares. FIGHTNIGHT LIVE broadcasts are viewed by 76 percent men, 24 percent women. The top demographic is comprised of males aged 25-34, which encompasses approximately 30 percent of the audience, on average.
The Sept. 9 “Real Deal Promotions: Empire State” set a new bar with 224,658 views and carried the series to over half-a-million views in just under four months, while the Aug. 26 Foxwoods “Super Saturday” show stands out individually with 201,935 views across 3,336 live hours of content, with 8,224 viewer interactions including 1,133 “likes” or “loves,” 1,570 comments and 1,392 shares.
Facebook FIGHTNIGHT LIVE has been delivered to fans absolutely free since its May 2017 launch courtesy of corporate partners like Barbour One 9, Talent Management and Entertainment Production (www.barbourone9.com) and Northeastern Fine Jewelry (www.nefj.com).
On Saturday night, August 26, live from Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I., fans can expect a high-impact, multi-camera streaming experience complete with graphics, animations, replays, interviews and an announce team anchored by blow-by-blow announcer Michael Woods of the TalkBox Podcast, NYFights.com and The Ring and analyst Xavier Porter of BrooklynFights.com, Notorious Boxing and the “Shoot the 5” radio show. To provide spectators with a fully-interactive ringside experience, commentators will ask and respond to questions from the Facebook audience throughout the broadcast.
Created and produced by Linacre Media out of New York City, the FIGHTNIGHT LIVE series features professional announcers, multiple camera angles, television graphics, replays and behind-the-scenes access and interviews. The streamed shows are available globally wherever Facebook is available. The initiative not only enables fans from around the world to tune in, but also gives up-and-coming fighters a global platform to showcase their abilities, gives promoters an accessible “broadcast” solution and gives sponsors the ability to reach a mass audience via branded content.
More FIGHTNIGHT LIVE Fall 2017 dates will be officially announced in the coming weeks.

Dmitriy Salita of Salita Promotions proudly announces the signing of super bantamweight prospect Jesse Angel Hernandez to an exclusive promotional contract.
A 26-year-old southpaw from Fort Worth, Texas, Hernandez (9-1, 7 KOs) first came to Salita’s attention last August 4, at a Salita Promotions event at the MGM Grand Detroit, and live on ShoBox: The New Generation, where he sored an impressive TKO 5 over Russia’s formerly undefeated Vladimir Tikhonov (16-0). Tikhonov, a Salita fighter, was overwhelmed by the strength, heavy hands and fearsome body attack of Hernandez.
It was a display of offensive firepower that promoters look for in a prospect.
Hernandez compiled a 68-6 record as an amateur before turning pro in 2009. Hampered by inactivity for five years, due to managerial issues and a shortage of local gyms, he has rededicated his career since returning in 2014.
Hernandez comes from a boxing family and is one of 16 brothers and sisters. Nine of the boys were boxers and six turned professional, including Jose “El Loco” Hernandez, who scored a draw against former world champion Mickey Bey, and Rodrigo Hernandez, who fought to the only draw with Leo Santa Cruz.
“It’s like a blessing to sign with Salita,” said Hernandez. “I feel like we are very good fit. A company with great potential to make hardworking fighters into championship level athletes. I plan on making a name for myself and eventually win a world title.”
A true force in the ring, Hernandez says as he progresses to bigger fights, his relentless style will become even more effective.
“I was made for 12 rounds or more. I have an advantage that will help me reach my plan of dominating the 122-lb. division and eventually move up and hopefully do the same at higher divisions. I would like to fight anybody who holds a title once I get my opportunity. I want to fight whoever is the best when I get to that level. I fear no one. If you have ranking points or a title, I hope to see you in my future.”
“Jesse has an exciting, aggressive TV-friendly style,” said Dmitriy Salita. “I am confident that with more fights and exposure he will be on his way to being a big name in the super bantamweight division.”
Joseph Parker vs. Hughie Fury WBO Heavyweight World Championship to air Sept. 23 live on PPV in United States
TENAFLY, N.J.(September 14, 2017) – A pair of undefeated heavyweights will face-off on Saturday afternoon, September 23, as World Boxing Organization (WBO) Heavyweight World Champion Joseph Parker takes on WBO No. 1 contender Hughie Fury, airing on Pay Per View in the United States, starting at 3:00 p.m. ET / 12:00 p.m. PT, live from Manchester Arena in Manchester, United Kingdom.
“Parker vs. Fury”, promoted by Hennessy Sports, is presented in the United States by Integrated Sports Media and Protocol Sports Marketing, Ltd., in conjunction with an internet-based YouTube PPV that is available at www.youtube.com/parkerfury..
Integrated Sports Media will distribute “Parker vs. Fury” live in the United States on cable and satellite PPV via iN Demand, Vubiquity, and DISH for a suggested retail price of only $24.95.
Outside of North America, “Parker vs. Fury” is being distributed to broadcasters worldwide by leading boxing television rights distribution firm, Protocol Sports Marketing Ltd.
“The Heavyweight Championship of the World is still the biggest priize in sport and it can capture the imagination of the public like no other sport,” promoter Mick Hennessy said. “In my career as a promoter, this is right up there and very personal to me, and we look forward to delivering a fantastic event for the fans.”
Parker (23-0, 18 KOs) and Fury (20-0, 10 KOs) have a combined record of a prefect 43-0 with 28 knockouts. Parker succeeded Fury’s unbeaten cousin, Tyson Fury, who vacated the WBO heavyweight title in 2016.
The 25-year-old Parker, fighting out of New Zealand by way of Las Vegas, captured the vacant WBO heavyweight title in 2016, taking a 12-round majority decision from previously undefeated Andy Ruiz, Jr. (29-0) in New Zealand. Parker, who stands 6′ 4″, made his first world title defense this past May in New Zealand, winning a 12-round unanimous decision over Razvan Cojanu (16-2).
Parker’s other notable victims include Frans Botha, Brian Minto, Sherman Williams, Jason Pettaway, Kali Meehan, Carlos Takam and Alexander Dimitrenko.
“I’m excited that the next defense of my WBO World title will be in England because it is now the home of heavyweight boxing and I need to be fighting there regularly,” Parker remarked. “Fighting away from home holds no fears for me. I will arrive having previously fought on the undercard of a Wladimir Klitschko world title fight in Germany, also twice in America. I believe that with so many Kiwis and Samoans living in the UK, I may even have more supporters in the crowd on fight night than Hughie Fury.”
Fury has fully recovered from the back injury that postponed the original May 6 date for him to challenge Parker to Sept. 23 in Manchester.
In 2012, Fury became the first British super heavyweight to capture a gold medal at the World Youth Amateur Boxing Championships and he hasn’t missed a beat as a professional since making his pro debut in 2013.
The 6′ 6″ Fury, who celebrates his 23rd birthday on Sept. 18, will be fighting at home in Manchester. Last year in his two most recent fights, both in London, Fury won a 10-round unanimous decision against former U.S. amateur standout Dominick Guinn (35-10-1), as well as a seven-round technical decision over Fred Kassi (18-4-1).
“I’ve waited so long for this chance and my team have worked very hard to get me this fight,” Fury commented. “I’d like to thank everyone involved. I’m going to shock the world and prove all my doubters wrong and what better place to do it than in my home city of Manchester. Parker is a good fighter and I’ve no doubt we’ll both bring our A-game on fight night. I can’t wait to be crowned world champion.
“Parker is the biggest challenge of my life and he will bring the very best out of me, but I aim to deliver a knockout performance. I’ve prepared like never-before for this fight and pushed myself to the limits and beyond. There’s no way Parker is leaving Manchester with that World title. I will do everything to make sure that belt stays here with me.”
Also airing live is the 12-round vacant WBO Intercontinental super welterweight title fight between hometown hero Jimmy “Kilrain” Kelly (21-2, 9 KOs) and Stilliyan “Still Kill” Kostov (21-7, 16 KOs), of Bulgaria.
All and/or highlights of additional PPV fights will air pending time restraints.
Fights and fighters subject to change.

HALL: BUTLER’S HAD A NIGHTMARE CAMP – I’LL TAKE HIM OUT
Stuart Hall believes Paul Butler has had a ‘nightmare’ camp for their rematch and he’ll take advantage by taking him out in their rematch and eliminator for the WBA World Bantamweight title at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on September 30, live on Sky Sports.
Hall and Butler first met in May 2014 in Newcastle where Butler took Hall’s IBF crown in a tight contest, and over three years later the 37 year old finally gets the chance to gain revenge and take a big step towards challenging for the WBA title – a belt held by another old foe of Hall’s, Jamie McDonnell, who is set to defend it again in a rematch with Liborio Solis.
Both men have since switched trainers since their first encounter, with Hall basing himself in Birmingham with Max McCracken alongside Kal and Gamal Yafai, while Butler has moved into Joe Gallagher’s Bolton home of champions – but Hall says he’s heard that Butler’s camp has been far from ideal, and he’ll take advantage of that to exact his revenge.
“My camp has gone brilliantly, I couldn’t ask for better preparation,” said Hall. “I’m training with the Yafai brothers who are world class fighters.
“I’ve been told he’s had a nightmare camp, terrible sparring which is not the best to fight someone like me. Deep down it’s my last chance, but I’m not going off that – I’m just going off what I’m doing and I know it will be too much for him.
“I saw Butler made a quote saying he’s got under my skin, that’s rubbish. I’m in a great place. I’m more focused and mentality very stable. The last time I fought him, maybe he got in my head a little bit.
“People go on about my age but I’m sparring people 10 years younger than me and giving them hell. They are all praising me saying how I’m firing.
“I’ve watched the first fight back a couple of times, I’m quite embarrassed to be honest. I let him do what he wanted for the first four or five rounds.
“I’m going to take care of him then I’m looking at my old foe Jamie McDonnell. Hopefully he does a number on Solis then we can get it on again. That’s the rematch I’ve wanted for years. We’re close now but this is a business. I thought he nicked the first fight, he’ll want to impress this time around and I expect to him wider on points.
“First and foremost I’m going to demolish Butler, then I can look to leave this sport on a high against McDonnell. All the pressure is on Paul. I’ll enjoy walking out to the boos being an away fighter. It’s nearly time to fight and I honestly am counting down the days.”
A stacked bill in support of the main event sees Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding defend his British Super-Middleweight title for the first time against Scotsman David Brophy, who puts up the Commonwealth strap he won in fine fashion in Australia in March.
Controversial Hackney man Ohara Davies looks to get back to winning ways as he challenges Tom Farrell for the unbeaten local favourite’s WBA International Super-Lightweight belt.
Birkenhead’s Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd defends his Commonwealth and WBC International Lightweight titles against former Team GB captain and Liverpudlian Tom Stalker.
Two more Team GB Olympians Anthony Fowler and Natasha Jonas fight on home turf for the first time in their second fights in the paid ranks, and there’s also action for Craig Glover.
Tickets are on general sale priced at priced £40, £60 and £100 at www.echoarena.com and on 0844 8000 400 – with VIP tickets priced at £200 exclusively available at www.matchroomboxing.com

Next weekend’s event also includes a unique opportunity for fight fans to enjoy the highly-anticipated Gennady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez Pay Per View showdown, also scheduled for Sept. 16th in Nevada.
The official Sept. 16th Williams-Rodriguez after party will be held at Murphy’s Law in Pawtucket, R.I., and CES Boxing is offering an exclusive $55.00 ticket that includes general admission to the live Twin River event, plus admission to the after party for the PPV showing of GGG-Canelo, in addition to a complimentary deluxe buffet and door prizes.
Combo tickets are available through CES Boxing and Murphy’s Law, located at 2 George Street in Pawtucket. Tickets for the after party only are available for $20.00 in advance and $30.00 the night of the event.
The main event stars two intriguing welterweights battling for championship glory on the region’s biggest stage. After defeating Bronx vet Issouf Kinda by knockout in a controversial bout at Foxwoods Resort Casino in August, New Haven, Conn., vet Jimmy Williams jumps right back into the fire less than three weeks later on Sept. 16th to face New Jersey’s “The Beast” Juan Rodriguez Jr., replacing the injured Khiary Gray in the main event.
Last month, Williams, a full-time truancy officer for the West Haven school department, fought in memory of a Branford, Conn., youth who drowned in a river. Shortly after his Sept. 16th return was announced, Williams’ wife, Christina, gave birth to twin boys, Logan and Austin.
Now 14-0-1, Williams has won 10 consecutive bouts. Sept. 16th will be the second defense of his WBC USNBC welterweight championship. The resilient Rodriguez is back on the map following a win over 20-fight vet Alex Perez in 2016, which ended a three-fight losing streak, the longest of his career.
In the welterweight division, Taunton, Mass., vet Marqus Bates, the half-brother of New England Patriots’ practice squad linebacker Trevor Bates, returns to face Travis Demko of Stoughton, Mass. Bates is now 2-1, winning back-to-back fights by first-round knockout after losing his debut in September of 2016. Bates, 31, is making up for lost time this year; he spent the ages of 25 through 28 incarcerated for multiple infractions. The Bates’ father was a standout athlete at Taunton High School. Trevor is back on New England’s practice squad this year for the second consecutive season.
Demko, 4-1, ends a 16-month layoff next weekend after an automobile accident in June of 2016 in which his car flew into a tree. Demko was airlifted to the hospital that night and listed in critical condition. He fractured two vertebrae in his neck, two in his back, broke his nose and suffered four broken ribs. He was in a coma for two days. His incredible recovery culminates next weekend with what will be the toughest fight of his career following a loss to Mohammad Allam in May of 2016.
The female bantamweight showdown between Marcia Agripino of Groton, Conn., and New Yorker Federica Bianco could steal the show. Both are accomplished professionals outside of the ring. Agripino is a nurse at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital while Federica is an astrophysicist and research scientist at the NYU Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics. Born in Genova, Italy, she received her undergraduate degree in Astronomy from the University of Bologna before moving to the United States. As a fighter, she is 2-1 with one knockout. Agripino is back for the first time since 2013 when she fought to a draw with Michelle Cook, dropping her record to 1-0-1.
Kendrick Ball Jr., of Worcester, Mass., aims for his eighth professional win in his 10th bout since turning pro in May of 2016 when he faces 7-1-1 Pablo Velez Jr., of Durham, N.C. Ball Jr. has been one of the region’s most active fighters, fighting on nine shows in his first 13 months as a pro. He recently scored a win over previously unbeaten Godson Noel of New Jersey. The combined record of his last four opponents prior to Velez is 16-1-3. With Velez, the record jumps to 23-2-4, an unmatched level of competition for any fighter in this region.
Providence, R.I., super featherweight Michael Valentin, now 1-0, returns fresh off his first-round knockout win in his pro debut in June to face newcomer Henry Garcia of New Bedford, Mass., a protégé of the legendary “Sucra” Ray Oliveira. At 18 years old, Valentin is the youngest fighter on the card. He went 35-7 as an amateur and won several titles before turning pro. Valentin was born with Hirschsprung’s, a rare intestinal disease. He was unable to have regular bowel movements and wore diapers throughout elementary school. He underwent more than 10 surgeries before he turned 11 and battled constant bullying throughout childhood.
Providence lightweight Anthony Marsella Jr. also returns to Twin River for the fifth time to face 20-fight vet Israel Rojas of Sonora, Mexico. Unbeaten at 5-0, Marsella Jr. picked himself up off the canvas in June to defeat tough Texan Abraham Torres on the scorecards. Marsella Jr. has recently been spending his entire training camps in Las Vegas, working out of the Mayweather Boxing Club, before returning home to put the finishing touches on his preparations. The battle-tested Rojas recently scored a knockout win in his last bout on Aug. 24th in Mexico.
Also returning Sept. 16th, hard-hitting, 6-foot-4 Sicilian heavyweight Juiseppe Cusumano continues his tour of the northeast in his third bout since signing with CES Boxing in 2017. Fresh off a first-round knockout win over Robert Dunton on Aug. 26th, which ran his record to 12-1 with 10 knockouts, Cusumano faces his toughest challenge against 5-2-2 Matt McKinney of Oceanside, Calif.
Before boxing, McKinney attended San Diego State University, where he specialized in psychology as a student of advanced studies. He fought on the GGG-Daniel Jacobs undercard at Madison Square Garden on St. Patrick’s Day weekend in March and scored a majority decision win over unbeaten Jay McFarlane, a popular Scottish boxer. The win was a dream come true for McKinney, who grew up idolizing Jack Dempsey, the heavyweight legend who also fought at MSG in 1920. Cusumano has won 10 in a row, the last six by knockout.
Sparks will also fly in the junior middleweight division when Ray Oliviera Jr., of New Bedford returns for the first time since April to face Meriden, Conn., vet David Wilson. Both fighters are coming off the first losses of their pro careers; Oliveira Jr. dropped a close decision to Casey Kramlich in April while Wilson recently suffered a narrow, majority decision loss to 10-fight vet Erik Spring. Trained by his father, “Sucra” Ray, the 26-year-old Oliveira Jr. was supposed to face Jose Rivera in a rematch in June, but Rivera sustained an injury the week of the fight. Wilson makes his Rhode Island debut on Sept. 16th. At 5-1-1, he’s one of only two fighters Ball Jr. has not beaten during his year-and-a-half surge as a pro; the two fought to a draw in July of 2016.
Other solid regional bouts highlight the preliminary card. In the featherweight division, Providence’s Phil Dudley ends a two-year layoff when he faces Worcester’s Philip Davis. Training out of 401 Boxing, Dudley won his only fight in 2015 against Jacob Solis. Davis, a standout soccer player in Worcester after moving to the United States from Liberia, lost a hard-luck decision to Providence’s Ricky Delossantos in his pro debut in April.
Ricky Delossantos, now 2-0, returns Sept. 16th for his toughest test when he faces 2-1-2 Jonathan Perez of Lowell, Mass. Perez, who works full-time as an asset protection agent for the Rite Aid pharmacy chain, was a two-time winner at the USA Boxing championships and captured a New England Golden Gloves championship in 2014. Delossantos has impressed in each of his first two bouts, scoring knockdowns en route to a pair of unanimous decision wins.
The Sept. 16th preliminary card also features an all-Worcester cruiserweight showdown between newcomers Jake Paradise and Rafiel Nyakoko. The 23-year-old Paradise grew up without a father and battled an addiction to prescription drugs. In and out of trouble as a youth, Paradise credits the birth of his son, Wyatt, now 3 years old, with helping him overcome the odds in his boxing career. Originally from New Jersey, the 30-year-old Nyakoko now trains out of Camp Get Right Boxing in Worcester.

Canelo-GGG: Saying little, promising a lot
By Norm Frauenheim-

PPV Weigh-in 11-20-2015
WBC Middleweight Title
Miguel Cotto 153.5 vs. Canelo Alvarez 155
LAS VEGAS – There’s not much left to say, not that Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez have ever had a whole lot to say anyway.
Their news conference Wednesday at the MGM Grand was something of a formality in the build-up to their middleweight fight Saturday at T-Mobile Arena. Everybody was polite. There were thanks instead of trash.
On one level, the relative silence was a relief.
Up and down The Strip, there are still echoes of insults Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor exchanged before they met in an August 26 event that included a boxer, a mixed-martial artist and a mixed message.
Mayweather, McGregor and everybody around them might still be talking, if not for all those awkward and yet unanswered questions about what the pay-per-view numbers really were. We don’t know. We may never know.
In Golovkin-Canelo, however, there doesn’t have to be talk – and only talk. Spectacles draw crowds like accidents. But who remembers them? They’re gone faster than a bag of chips and a mild heartburn.
Canelo-GGG is being sold as much more. Substance instead of empty spectacle is the sales pitch for the HBO pay-per-view bout (5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET).
“I know it’s going to be a tough fight,’’ said Canelo, the red-headed Mexican who again wore signs of his Irish roots with a full beard that McGregor would have envied. “I know that. I’m prepared for that.’’
Canelo is a man of more punches than words. He doesn’t indulge in overstatement. When he says he is prepared, be forewarned. To wit: Be prepared for a middleweight perhaps as good as any in weight class full of bouts, name and dates that could fill a history book.
There’s no myth in middleweight. No mixed, either. But that’s another story. But there’s always another story about to unfold. At least, Canelo-GGG has that potential. Canelo promoter Oscar De La Hoya says it might be the best since Marvin Hagler-Thomas Hearns.
“Your kids will be talking about Gennady Golovkin-Canelo Alvarez twenty years from now,’’ De La Hoya said.
Unlike his fighter, De La Hoya does indulge in overstatement. As a promoter, that’s part of the job. If Canelo-GGG comes even close to the drama attached to Hearns-Hagler, then the lack of words before opening bell won’t matter.
There will be plenty to say about for many years after.
CANELO VS. GOLOVKIN FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES,

LAS VEGAS (Sept. 13, 2017) – Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez (49-1-1, 34 KOs) and WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO Middleweight Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (37-0, 33 KOs) hosted the final press conference ahead of their showdown on Saturday, Sept. 16 presented live on HBO Pay-Per-View® at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT. The live stream of the press conference can be viewed here.
Below is what the fighters and their teams had to say at today’s final press conference:
CANELO ALVAREZ, Lineal and Ring Magazine Middleweight Champion:
“I don’t like to talk too much. I just want to say that I’m prepared. I know it will be a tough fight. I just want you all to enjoy it like I’m going to enjoy it. I’m really, really excited to get in and fight. The excitement is there. The adrenaline is there. I have nothing to say to him. They know what kind of fighter I am. I’m prepared. I’m ready. All I want to tell him is look, let’s give the fans a great fight.”
GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN, WBC/WBA/IBF/IBO Middleweight Champion:
“I am really happy to see everybody in Vegas. I want to thank Golden Boy and GGG Promotions for the great work, our sponsors and HBO. I don’t want to talk too much. I am ready. I respect Canelo’s team. This is a big day not only for us, but for boxing and this era. This will be a huge historic fight at T-Mobile Arena. I feel comfortable. I see that Canelo is ready. He is ready for serious business, a serious fight. This fight will be the biggest gift to the people.”
EDDY REYNOSO, Head Trainer of Canelo Alvarez:
“Everything that was said or had to be said has been said. We’ve had a great preparation, more than 14 years to prepare for this type of fight. We’ve had a great camp, no injuries, everything went well, and more importantly we are ready to win come Saturday night.”
JOSE “CHEPO” REYNOSO, Manager and Trainer of Canelo Alvarez:
“This is the end of 10 hard weeks of training. Work that was done with a lot of discipline and a lot of responsibility. In Canelo’s camp, we declare ourselves ready and confident that this Saturday we will win. Canelo is going to come out with his hand raised. I want to close with a dedication to my friend Abel Sanchez. He says Triple G has a Mexican style. But I tell Abel that not only does Canelo have a Mexican style and a Mexican heart, but he IS Mexican!”
ABEL SANCHEZ, Trainer to Gennady Golovkin:
“All the talking and the boasting on both sides is done. We’ve had a great training camp and sparring. Golovkin is at 100 percent. We are looking forward to a great fight, a dramatic, explosive fight. These guys have the styles that will make for a fight that we will all remember.”
OSCAR DE LA HOYA, CEO & Chairman of Golden Boy Promotions:
“This is a fight to see who the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet is. I am grateful to everyone in the boxing world who contributed to making this event. This event needs no hype whatsoever. This is a fight that’s a can’t-miss event. That’s the bottom line. It’s going to be a great fight because of what is at stake: pride and fighting for your country and boxing fans. This is a fight for the sport of boxing, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. The stakes couldn’t be higher.”
“We have to thank the fighters for agreeing for competing at the very peak of their careers. Saturday night at the T-Mobile arena it will be electrifying, a packed house. This event will take place life at HBO Pay-Per-View for the first time ever at 8:00pm ET in consideration of our east coast fans and our worldwide fanbase. You can also watch the fight at RingTV.com on your phone or table or from wherever you are.”
BERNARD HOPKINS, Golden Boy Promotions Business Partner:
“The middleweight division goes all the way back. I thought about this fight when I got here yesterday. The fight that really stands out to me in comparison to Canelo-Golovkin, with the danger in the first couple of rounds, is Marvin Hagler and John Mugabi. One thing, however, is that history doesn’t always repeat itself. Thank you to Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin for respecting the division that made me.”
TOM LOEFFLER, Promoter of Gennady “GGG” Golovkin:
“We arrived on Monday evening, and as soon as we arrived at the hotel you could feel the excitement in the air. An event like this can only be a superfight between somebody like Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. They are two true world champions. The two best middleweights in the world. Two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and two of the most marketable fighters of the world.”
TONY WALKER, Vice President at HBO Sports:
“Congratulations to Tom and Oscar for putting this together. This is truly a momentous event this Saturday. This is the best fight that can be made in boxing. This is potentially fight we think about in years to come. The first fight will be at 5:00 p.m. PT/ 8:00 p.m. ET.
The main event is scheduled for 8:00pm PT/11:00 ET. The price is $69.95.”
BOB BENNETT, Executive Director of Nevada Athletic State Commission:
“As always, the Nevada State Athletic Commission is humbled, honored and privileged to be able to regulate this sensational fight. We take a great deal of effort in the selection of our officials for our fight. We have Kenny Bayless who will referee the fight. The judges will be Dave Moretti, Adalaide Byrd and Don Trella.”
RICHARD STURM, President of Entertainment and Sports for MGM Resorts International:
“As we welcome back Canelo Alvarez following his May victory over Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., we would also like to welcome Triple G to Las Vegas for his Nevada debut. We are thrilled that these two great champs decided to fight. The event is sold out, but our closed-circuit broadcast will be presented in all MGM Resort properties.”
Also, fighters from the Canelo vs. Golovkin undercard hosted a media workout at MGM Resort Hotel and Casino before their upcoming fights this Saturday, Sept. 16 at T-Mobile Arena.

In the co-main event of the Canelo vs. Golovkin undercard, Joseph “JoJo” Diaz, Jr. Ryan “Blue Chip” Martin (19-0, 11 KOs) and Francisco Rojo (20-2, 13 KOs) will battle it out for Ryan’s WBC Continental Americas and the vacant WBA Intercontinental lightweight titles in the opening bout of the HBO Pay-Per-View®telecast.
Heres what the undercard fighters had to say at today’s workout:
JOSEPH “JOJO” DIAZ, JR., Featherweight Contender:
“It’s my time, it’s my opportunity, being on such a big card like Canelo-GGG. Tune in, everyone. It’s a lot of pressure. This is what I’ve been dreaming of since I was a kid. This fight is going to be a WBC Featherweight title eliminator, but it’s where I want to be to take care of business this Saturday night.”
RANDY “EL MATADOR” CABALLERO, NABF Super Bantamweight Champion:
“The last time I was in Vegas, it was the worst experience of my life. To lose the title the way I did was disappointing. But I told everyone that this time I’m that in Vegas it will be a different ball game. He’s [De La Hoya] undefeated for a reason, but I don’t think he’s ever stepped in the ring with someone like me. We’re both undefeated, so don’t miss it. This fight right here might steal the show.”
DIEGO DE LA HOYA, WBC Youth World Super Bantamweight Champion:
“It’s an evenly matched fight, but my advantage is that I’ve been more active and he hasn’t been fighting very much. I have worked with sparring partners who replicate his style. They are not him, but they are close to him. It will be an explosive fight. We’ll see what randy [Caballero] has to offer and we prepared for the best of him.”
RYAN “BLUE CHIP” MARTIN, WBC Continental Americas Champion:
“We’re going to give him a boxing lesson come Saturday night. I’ve trained hard, I’m so happy to have my manager, Tom Loeffler, in my corner. Big things are coming, and this is just the first step in the plan. It’s so great to be here in Vegas. It’s such an exciting fight.”

Cruiserweight Vinnie Carita to headline “New England’s Future 4”
WORCESTER, Mass. (September 13, 2017) – Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE) has formally announced that the fourth and final 2017 installment of its popular professional boxing series, “New England’s Future”, will be held Saturday night, October 28, at the DCU Center (Exhibition Hall) in Worcester, Massachusetts.
“New England’s Future 4” is presented by Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), which is owned and operated by retired three-time, two division world champion Jose Antonio Rivera and his son, Anthonee (A.J.) Rivera.
Pro boxing returned to the DCU Center this past June for the first time in 11 years, since promoter Rivera defeated Alejandro Garcia, by way of a 12-round unanimous decision, for the World Boxing Association (WBA) World super welterweight title.
Former WBU Americans and IBU North American cruiserweight champion Vinnie “American Nightmare” Carita (16-1-1, 15 KOs), fighting out of Pembroke (MA), will face an opponent to soon be determined in the eight-round main event. Carita, like promoter Rivera, is a Massachusetts court officer: Carita in the City of Champions, Brockton, and Rivera at home in Worcester.
Fast-rising Worcester fighter Bryan Daniels (5-0, 3 KOs) puts his undefeated record on the line against upset-minded Tracey Johnson (4-5-4) in the six-round co-featured event, to be contested at a 206-pound catch-weight.
Former UFC heavyweight title challenger Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga will make his pro boxing debut in a four-round match against Washington D.C. heavyweight Alando Pugh (1-10-1, 1 KO). Brazil-born Gonzaga, who lives in and teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Worcester, defeated UFC stars such as Mirko Cro Cop, Ben Rothwell and Chris Tuchscherer during his outstanding mixed-martial-arts career. In 2007, Gonzaga lost his UFC title shot to Hall of Famer Randy Couture in Las Vegas at UFC 74 by way of a third-round technical knockout.
“I am excited with the talent we have been able to put together for our last boxing event of 2017,” promoter Jose Antonio Rivera said. “We are proud to have been able to make our dream of bringing professional boxing back to Worcester. We are working on a few things to make 2018 even bigger and better for RPE. We are grateful to all the boxers who have trusted us to help them progress in their careers. It has been a pleasure working with them and their teams. It has also been a pleasure for us to work with some of the businesses in our City of Worcester that have supported our vision, also helping us raise money for some charities in our community.”
The “New England’s Future 4” undercard features many of the best and most popular N.E. fighters, including 2016 N.E. Golden Gloves champion Anthony Laureano (4-0, 2 KOs), a promising welterweight from East Hartford (CT). Laureano will be in a six-round match against TBA.
Other undercard fights, all four-rounders, include 2014 N.E. Golden Gloves champion Adrian “Tonka” Sosa (4-0, 3 KOs), fighting out of nearby Lawrence (MA), vs. veteran Norwalk (CT) welterweight Shakha Moore (12-23-3, 2 KOs), New Haven (CT) Edwin Soto (10-2-2, 4 KOs) vs. Anthony Everett (1-6). of Lawrence, at a 150-pounds catch-weight, Worcester’s Bobby Harris III (1-0) vs. Troy “Omar KO Artist” Artis (3-7-1, 2 KOs) at a 164-pounds catch-weight, three-time USA Boxing Nationals champion Elvis Figueroa (2-0, 1 KO), of New Haven (CT), vs. Anthony Bowman (11-63-2, 3 KOs). Richard “Popeye The Sailor Man” Rivera (2-0, 1 KO), of Hartford (CT), vs. Hansen Castillo (0-2), at a 180-pounds catch-weight, Southbridge (MA) junior welterweight Wilfredo “El Sucaro” Pagan (2-0) vs. Oscar Diaz (0-12), of Hartford, and Danbury (CT) junior welterweight Omar Bordoy, Jr. (2-0) vs. Alan Beeman (0-15), of Providence.

Former UFC heavyweight title challenger Gabriel Gonzaga to make pro boxing debut On “New England’s Future 4” card
WORCESTER, Mass. (September 13, 2017) – Former UFC heavyweight title challenger Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga will make his professional boxing debut Saturday night, October 26, on the “New England’s Future 4” card, promoted by Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), at the DCU Center (Exhibition Hall) in Worcester, Massachusetts.
“New England’s Future 4” (NEF4) is presented by Rivera Promotions Entertainment (RPE), which is owned and operated by retired three-time, two division world champion Jose Antonio Rivera and his son, Anthonee (A.J.) Rivera.
Former WBU Americans and IBU North American cruiserweight champion Vinnie “American Nightmare” Carita (16-1-1, 15 KOs), rated No. 6 by the North American Boxing Organization (NABO), headlines against an opponent to be determined in the eight-round main event.
“RPE is excited to have an athlete of Gonzaga’s caliber making his pro debut on our NEF4 boxing event,” promoter Jose Antonio Rivera said. “We are happy that boxers and MMA athletes trust us in terms of what we are trying to do to help them build their careers.”
The 38-year-old Gonzaga teaches Brazilian Ju-Jitsu (BJJ) in Worcester and lives nearby in Ludlow. Now retired from mixed-martial-arts competition (17-11-0, 7 KOs, 9 SUBs, 1 DEC), the 6′ 2″, 260-pound Gonzaga holds 4th degree black belt in BJJ. The highlight of his MMA career was at the 2007 UFC 70 held in Manchester, United Kingdom, in which he knocked out K-1, Pride and Rizen champion Mirko Cro Cop with a head kick in the opening round, positioning Gonzaga for his unsuccessful challenge of UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture in his next fight.
Gonzaga also defeated Ben Rothwell, Shawn Jordan and Chris Tuchscherer, among the more notable UFC fighters he faced in the Octagon.
“When I first saw Gabriel sparring,” Gonzaga’s trainer Rocky Gonzalez said, “I knew he had potential to beat a lot of heavyweights around. He had a lot going on at that time and he was still under contract with the UFC. Now, it’s a great opportunity for him.”
Tickets, priced at $75.00 (ringside) and $45.00 (general admission), are on sale and available to purchase at the DCU Center box office, www.dcu.centerworcester.com, by contacting Jose Rivera (elgallojar@gmail.com/508.864.6954), AJ Rivera

About Broadway Boxing
Broadway Boxing was launched in April 2004 as a monthly boxing series featuring local prospects and contenders. By August of 2008, Broadway Boxing had become a weekly series on SNY with a combination of premiere episodes and replays of past or “best of” shows that emanate from DBE’s vast library. Having debuted on HD Net and the MSG Network, Broadway Boxing has aired every Sunday night at 8 p.m. ET on SNY for the past nine years. During that time, the series has grown to produce some of the highest ratings for any program broadcast on SNY, outside of NY Mets games. World champions such as Vitali Klitschko, Gennady Golovkin, Jose Pedraza, Andre Berto, Paulie Malignaggi, Peter Quillin, Guillermo Rigondeaux, Yuriorkis Gamboa, DeMarcus Corley, Randall Bailey and Amanda Serrano have appeared on the series. The current broadcast team consists of Hall of Famer Steve Farhood and Brian Custer of Showtime, as well as Brian Adams, the Director of the New York Daily News Golden Gloves tournament. Past broadcasters to call the fights include the late Nick Charles of Showtime, WFAN’s Tony Paige, the NFL’s Bob Papa, Fox Sports’ Gus Johnson, Sam Rosen and Fran Charles.
ESPN Films’ 30 for 30 to Premiere Tommy Morrison Documentary Exclusively on the ESPN App and On-Demand
ESPN Films will premiere a documentary on the ESPN App and on-demand for the first time with the next installment of the award-winning 30 for 30 series, “Tommy.” The film about the late WBO heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison will be available exclusively for streaming and on-demand audiences starting Wednesday, September 13. It will then make its broadcast premiere on Wednesday, September 27, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Co-directed by Gentry Kirby and Erin Leyden, “Tommy” examines Morrison’s remarkable rise to the spotlight, followed by a stunning, confounding, and ultimately tragic fall. He was one of the best heavyweights of his time; a handsome, charming, yet unsettled young star. Born into a troubled family in America’s heartland, Morrison’s initial emergence as a fighter was bolstered by a starring role in “Rocky V.” A few years later he beat George Foreman for the WBO heavyweight title, and seemed primed for more stardom, even in the face of blown opportunities and upset losses. But everything changed in early 1996 when he tested positive for HIV, abruptly forcing him into retirement at age 27. From there, Morrison’s life spiraled further and further downward, plagued by drug problems, jail time, and an eventual denial that he had the virus at all.
“Although testing positive for HIV was a big part of Tommy’s life, we did not set out for this to be an HIV story,” said co-director Gentry Kirby. “’Tommy’ is more of a personal, intimate look into how a person’s upbringing can affect their ability to handle everything that life throws at them.”
Adds co-director Erin Leyden: “One of the things I found so compelling about Tommy was the sense that he always wanted to do the right thing, yet so many of the challenges he faced were self-inflicted due to the decisions he made.”
Through interviews with Morrison’s promoter, manager, trainers and family, among others, the film explores the one-time heavyweight champion’s unlikely rise and sudden fall. There have been other boxers and other sports stars whose stories ended sadly, but rarely is the loss of potential as poignant as the case of Tommy Morrison.
Advance press screeners available upon request. Additional information, including film clips and director statements and bios, will be available on the 30 for 30 website espn.com/30for30. Follow 30 for 30 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and join the conversation with hashtag #Tommy. The full film will also be available On Demand immediately following the broadcast debut on ESPN2 Wednesday, September 27. 30 for 30 is presented by Mini.
“Tommy” will be available to stream in the new “Watch” tab on the ESPN App for iOS and Android, which launched as part of last week’s 5.10 update. The release marks the latest effort to create a comprehensive, one-stop shop for sports fans by integrating more live and on-demand video content directly into the ESPN App that is both personal and discoverable. Video-on-demand access will also be available on set top boxes and OTT devices through a pay TV provider.

UNDEFEATED RAFAEL ‘BIG BANG’ RIVERA STEPS IN TO FIGHT JOSEPH ‘JOJO’ DIAZ JR. IN WBC TITLE ELIMINATOR AS CO-MAIN EVENT TO CANELO-GOLOVKIN
LAS VEGAS (September 13, 2017) – Undefeated Featherweight Rafael “Big Bang” Rivera (25-0-2, 16 KOs) will step in to fight 2012 U.S. Olympian Joseph “JoJo” Diaz, Jr. (24-0, 13 KOs) in a 12-round WBC Title Eliminator as the co-main event to the Canelo-Golovkin superfight Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena.
Rivera, a 23-year-old from Tijuana, Mexico, has steadily climbed the featherweight division. He defeated former Super Bantamweight World Champion Wilfredo “Papito” Vazquez, Jr., stopped Ruben “Canelito” Tamayo and took away the undefeated status of Ruben “El Tibio” Garcia Hernandez. Rivera is replacing Jorge Lara, who had to bow out due to reasons that have not been verified.
Rivera was originally supposed to fight Diaz on Saturday’s card, but was forced to step aside for Lara, due to Lara being higher-ranked by the WBC. Rivera has already been training for a fight next week, and is in tip-top shape for his showdown with Diaz.
“Originally, I was hoping to get a shot at JoJo Diaz,” Rivera said. “When that didn’t pan out, I took another fight for next week. I have therefore been training and am in the best shape of my life. I am grateful that I have this last-minute chance, and there is no way I am letting this opportunity pass me by.”
Diaz, a 2012 U.S. Olympian who has shot his way to the top of the featherweight division with victories over a who’s who of contenders, was unfazed by the last-minute change of opponent.
Diaz Jr. said, “I don’t care who is in front of me, I’m leaving with a win on September 16th. After I have my hand raised in victory, I will be one fight away from realizing my dream of winning a world championship.”

Callum Smith vs. Erik Skoglund kicks-off super middleweight action in World Boxing Super Series
EDMONTON, Canada (September 13, 2017) – The focus shifts from cruiserweights to super middleweights this Saturday (Sept. 16) in World Boxing Super Series (WBSS) quarterfinals action as undefeated, elite 168-pound fighters Callum “Mundo” Smith and Erik Skoglund throw-down at Echo Arena in Liverpool, United Kingdom.
Canadian boxing fans will be able to watch all the tournament action live, including Smith vs. Skoglund, on Super Channel, which acquired the rights in Canada to broadcast the World Boxing Super Series from MP & Silva, a leading international media company that provides media rights, digital, technology and sponsorship services.
The “O” must go in Saturday’s initial super middleweight fight in WBSS tournament as undefeated boxers Smith and Skoglund battle in the 12-round main event, airing live on Super Channel at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT, for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Diamond Championship.
The “Smith vs. Skoglund” card start time on Super Channel is TBA (check for updated details on www.superchannel.ca).
(L-R) – Callum Smith & Erik Skoglund
Smith (22-0, 17 KOs), fighting at home in Liverpool, is rated No. 8 by The Ring magazine. He is a former WBC Silver and European super middleweight champion who is a rising star.
“A ring is a ring no matter where it is, but course, I’m happy to be fighting in Liverpool,” Smith admitted. “This is my home and this is where all my best performances as a professional have been. I like fighting in Liverpool, and with the crowd behind me, I will have an added advantage.
“There are no easy fights in this tournament. It’s the best fighting the best, but I believe I made the right decision (choosing Skoglund) in Monte Carlo (at the WBSS Draft Gala). That’s not to say Skoglund is not a good fighter. I think he is a very good fighter. His record speaks for itself, but I think stylistically, he was the right choice for me.
“It’ll be a tough test. On paper, Skoglund is probably the best fighter I’ve ever faced, and I will need to be at my best to beat him. But every time I’ve been up against it in my career, and every time there’s been that fear factor, it’s brought out the best in me and I’m hoping for the same Saturday.”
Skoglund (26-0, 12 KOs) was ranked by all four major sanctioning bodies as a light heavyweight before moving down in weight to compete in the WBSS as a super middleweight. The 26-year-old Swede has been the IBO, WBA International and European champion.
“This is a huge opportunity for me to prove myself at the highest level,” Skoglund said. “Callum Smith is a top-level fighter and one of the tournament favorites. This is what the World Boxing Super Series is all about – the best fighting the best! That’s why I entered and that is why I’m really looking forward to this fight.
“For me, it’s no problem fighting in Liverpool. Of course, I am always thankful for the opportunity to fight in front of my fans in Sweden, but I’m happy not having that pressure on my shoulders for this fight and I will enjoy being the underdog for once.”
The inaugural season of the World Boxing Super Series features two weight classes (cruiserweight & super middleweight), 16 fighters, and a total of 14 main events. An expert panel invited the world’s best boxers to compete, namely the top 15-ranked fighters of the four major federations: WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO. In each weight class, eight boxers will battle it out in a bracket-style elimination tournament, with four quarterfinals (September & October 2017), two semifinals (January & February 2018) and one championship final (May 2018).
World Boxing Super Series is a new revolutionary bracket-style elimination tournament featuring the world`s best boxers and a total of $50 million in prize money. The knockout format of the competition will see the best boxers ultimately compete for the Muhammad Ali Trophy, the greatest prize in boxing. The tournament is organized by newly-founded Comosa AG, a Swiss-registered company with principal owners Highlight Event & Entertainment, Modern Times Group and Team Sauerland. Comosa AG is working in partnership with boxers, promoters and managers around the world, and in alignment with the four major world boxing federations, to create a new global platform for the sport.
“Smith vs. Skoglund” card and several preliminary bouts, promoted by Matchroom Boxing, will air exclusively in Canada on Super Channel.
All fights and fighters are subject to change.
