PROVIDENCE, R.I. (July 14th, 2017) — Returning to its home base of Twin River Casino for the first time in nearly three months, CES MMA is bringing out the heavy artillery for its next AXS TV showcase.

“CES MMA 45,” scheduled for Friday, Aug. 11th, 2017, live on AXS TV Fights, features two world-title bouts, including the long-awaited return of reigning CES MMA Heavyweight Champion Ashley Gooch (10-5, 7 KOs) defending the strap against fan-favorite Juliano Coutinho (7-3, 3 KOs), plus longtime regional stalwarts Saul Almeida (19-8, 1 KO) of Framingham, Mass., and Pedro Gonzalez (11-5) of nearby Gloucester battling for the promotion’s Interim Featherweight World Title.

The two five-round championship bouts headline another stacked card for the region’s leading mixed martial arts promotion, including six televised bouts on AXS TV, beginning at 9 p.m. ET. The five-fight preliminary card, which begins at 7, features four action-packed bouts, including the long-awaited professional debuts of regional featherweights John Douma of Providence, R.I., and Billy Keenan of Salem, Mass., who earned a promotional contract with CES MMA by way of victory in his amateur finale at “CES MMA 43.”

The heavyweight championship main event features a contrast of styles with the heavy-handed Gooch locking horns with the submission specialist Coutinho, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt fighting out of Wareham, Mass., making his third appearance with CES MMA.

Gooch captured the then-vacant title at “CES MMA 33” in August, knocking out Greg Rebello in the third round and snapping the Providence native’s four-fight win streak. Aug. 11th will be his third appearance at Twin River, where he is currently 2-0 following wins over Rebello and Connecticut’s Josh Diekmann in January of 2016.

The Almeida-Gonzalez title bout is a long time coming for both fighters. One of the most polarizing figures in regional MMA, Almeida makes his 11th appearance with CES MMA, the only fighter on the Aug. 11th card with the distinction of having fought on CES MMA’s inaugural event in September of 2010.

Coming off a big win over Josh LaBerge at “CES MMA 42,” Almeida now gets his long-awaited title shot against the resurgent Gonzalez, who earned his opportunity with a submission win over Bruno Dias at “CES MMA 43.” Amidst a myriad of last-minute cancellations and injuries that limited him to just two bouts during a 16-month stretch, the Gloucester native carries a five-fight win streak into next month’s title bout and hasn’t lost since 2012.

In a highly-anticipated regional showdown that could steal the spotlight Aug. 11th, rising lightweight star Nate Andrews (10-1, 5 KOs) of East Providence, R.I., puts his four-fight win streak on the line against Maine native Bruce Boyington (14-10, 8 KOs), a veteran of 24 professional fights and a three-time World Series of Fighting (WSOF) vet.

Also on the main card, Cranston, R.I., welterweight Gary Balletto Jr. (3-1, 1 KO) makes his television debut against Hooksett, N.H., vet Nick Alley (3-1, 1 KO). Balletto carries a three-fight win streak into next month’s bout, most recently dismantling Chris Torres by first-round submission on the preliminary card of “CES MMA 42.”

Unbeaten Milford, Mass., bantamweight Kris Moutinho (4-0, 1 KO) battles Erie, Pa., native Brandon Seyler (6-5-1, 1 KO), who makes his second appearance with CES MMA, and undefeated female flyweight Maria Rivera (2-0, 1 KO) of Framingham makes her network television debut and third appearance with CES MMA, facing 29-year-old Mandy Polk (3-3) of Germantown, Tenn. Moutinho is off to a flying start as a pro with wins in all four of his bouts under the guidance of CES MMA, including an impressive unanimous decision win over seven-fight vet Lloyd Reyes at “CES MMA 42.”

Highlighting the preliminary card, Salem’s Keenan faces fellow debut Timothy Tyler of Pennsauken, N.J. Keenan earned his spot at “CES MMA 43,” submitting Cody Dickershaid in the first round of his final amateur bout. The 20-year-old Douma turns pro against Jason Rine (0-2) of Danville, Ohio, following wins in each of his last three amateur bouts.

Also on the preliminary card, bantamweight Richie Santiago (4-0, 1 KO) puts his unbeaten record on the line against Queens, N.Y., vet Miguel Restrepo (4-3-1, 2 KOs). The 4-0 Santiago, 24, finished each of his four fights by submission, most recently at “CES MMA 43” against Chad Kelly. Restrepo returns to Rhode Island after challenging unbeaten bantamweight Carlos Candelario at “CES MMA 41.”

Ludlow, Mass., lightweight Leon Davis (8-3, 1 KO) returns to face Andrew Osborne (7-10, 2 KOs), the two-time CES MMA vet and North Carolina native who now lives and trains in North Providence, R.I. Osborne comes off an upset win over previously-unbeaten Connor Barry by unanimous decision at “CES MMA 43” while Davis, a winner in his last four fights, makes his seventh appearance with CES MMA.

Also on the preliminary card, unbeaten featherweight Dylan Lockhard (3-0) of Hollis, N.H., faces Cortland, N.Y., vet Ahsan Abdullah (7-7, 3 KOs). Lockhard earned his first two wins as a pro under the guidance of CES MMA, including a first-round submission win over Russell Campbell at “CES MMA 40” in November.

WBC International Light Heavyweight Champion JOE SMITH JR., (23-1-0, 19 KO’s) met with a group of his labor union brotherhood following today’s final press conference at The Fabulous Forum for his showdown this Saturday night, July 15 against highly ranked contender SULLIVAN BARRERA, (19-1-0, 14 KO’s), telecast live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark (9:50 p.m. ET/PT).

Six months later Smith challenged future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins at the Fabulous Forum and live on HBO. Dominating the legend on December 17 through the first seven rounds, the construction union laborer Smith drilled Hopkins to the canvas and out of the ring earning the knockout in the eighth round.

Other than to say it was hard to watch, it was hard to know what to make of the first three stops this week in the Floyd-Mayweather Jr.-Conor McGregor tour.

It was funny in Los Angeles. Kind of.

It was silly in Toronto. Sort of.

It was embarrassing in New York. Period.

It was impossible to think there can be any kind of an encore in London. More than a tour, the exhibition for their Aug. 26 event in Las Vegas has been a steep decline into a tired exchange of gestures and obscenities.

Not any role models here, not that any were expected. But I’m guessing it’s not something that Mayweather or McGregor would want their kids to ever see, much less emulate.

Both are going to make tons of money and then have to spend a lot of it just to make sure their kids don’t grow up to be like daddy.

All the profane posturing and over-the-top insults appear to be exactly the spectacle that some predicted would be more entertaining than the match itself. A classic boxer, the best of his generation, versus a mixed martial arts star in sanctioned boxing bout?

As an event, it is neither fish nor fowl, which means nobody will be surprised if the pay-per-view audience screams foul after paying the $99.95 price tag for high-def.

If anything, disappointment in the so-called fight seems to be baked into the expectation for fans more amped about a chance that McGregor might kick Mayweather in the face at the Vegas weigh-in.

After all, there’s just not a whole lot to say after Los Angeles, Toronto and New York. These fans want spectacle, not substance, and it’s spectacle they’re going to get. The guess from this corner is that the bout will be about as meaningful as Donald Trump’s “take down” of Vince McMahon at ringside of a WWE production in 2007.

Then again, that bit of lowbrow theater went from fake news to real news a couple of weeks ago when Trump re-tweeted a redone video of the staged moment with the CNN logo as McMahon’s head.

Serious journalists debated that one, right alongside health care. Seriously. Maybe, spectacle is today’s substance. I’ll leave that one up to people a lot smarter than an old boxing writer still not sure what to make of Mayweather-McGregor.

There are the betting odds, only 7-to-1 in favor of Mayweather. Really? The best in the business for about a decade against a novice boxer, and yet the odds give the novice a real chance?

Then, there are news reports this week about Mayweather’s tax liability. I’m not sure what to believe about the reported numbers or even if he in fact owes the IRS for back taxes. But I heard the crowds this week, chanting “Pay your taxes, pay your taxes.’’

The reports are troublesome on a couple of levels. If accurate, they might be symptomatic of a deeper financial problem. Consider this scenario: Instead of scoring a one–sided TKO of McGregor with a couple of precise counters midway through the event, let’s say that Mayweather wins a decision close enough to argue for a rematch.

That’s when those chants might get nasty. To wit: He needs the rematch to pay those taxes. The again, what’s a good spectacle without some suspicion?

NEW YORK (July 13, 2017) – Day three of their blockbuster world tour sawboxing legend Floyd Mayweather and UFC superstar Conor McGregor continue to trade verbal jabs as the global stars went face-to-face in front of over 13,000 fans at Barclays Center ahead of their Aug. 26 showdown on SHOWTIME PPV from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

After filling venues in Los Angeles and Toronto, an electric crowd greeted the two fighters Thursday as Mayweather and McGregor picked up right where they left off, building on the two increasingly combative press conferences held Tuesday and Wednesday.

The world tour concludes on Friday when the fighters travel to The SSE Arena, Wembley in London.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER

“I knew that this was going to be a huge event. We had to give the people what they wanted to see and if we break the PPV record, all I’ll be doing is breaking my own record.

“I’m just thankful to be in this position. To be at this age and compete against young guys, it’s a blessing. He’s bigger, he has a longer reach and I’ve been inactive. Plus, we’ve never seen him lose standing up. He feels like he’s the best. I was the best when I was competing. So I think I had to come back for this last hurrah.

“Even though I haven’t been competing in boxing, you still have young guys calling me out all the time. Even the MMA fighters call me out.

“My thing is that either I’m going to get him, or he’s going to get me. The outcome is going to be what it’s going to be. Once you have that mindset, you’re going to be okay. He’s coming for me and I’m coming for him.

“Nobody knows that squared circle like me. I know angles. I know where to touch you at. I know what you don’t like. I don’t have to watch your tapes. That’s something I’m blessed with. But, he’s unorthodox. So it’ll definitely be something different in the ring. I just have to keep my composure.

“I have to stand up for the Americans and the American fight fans. He represents his country and I represent the red, white and blue. I represent everyone in this country.

“I’ve been doing this for 21 years in five weigh classes. I’ve never quit.”

CONOR MCGREGOR

“Floyd saying he’s going to knock me out is the funniest comment of the whole tour. I hope he comes for it and I hope he brings it. I’ll be prepared for anything and anticipate whatever he brings.

“I’m in great shape, that’s why I’m not wearing a shirt. I’m in shape to fight right now. I don’t have a nick on my body right now. I’m going to be 100 percent on fight night.

“I have a very high fight IQ. I understand when to go and when not to. Only me and the opponent can see these details. I’m very confident whether it’s in a ring or an octagon.

“The rounds are two minutes shorter than I’m used to and there’s a lot less action than I’m used to. He’s going to feel like he’s wrestling a bear when we tie up for the first time. He’s too small. I’m going to have my way with him.

“I know every shot he throws. I know what to expect. He fights the same every time. So we’re preparing. But he knows nothing about me. He has no idea how I’m going approach him.

“I’m not tired of this. It’s really a lot of fun. We’ll keep it professional for now. I could never get tired of this. It’s such a great time to be a fight fan.

“Floyd is saying a lot about me tapping out, but he’s never had a true fight. He knows nothing about the game that I’m involved with. We’ll see who is quitting on Aug. 26.

“To come back here in New York, where I made history and become the first fighter in UFC history to win titles simultaneously, I’m blown away by the support.”

NEW YORK – July 13, 2017 – Combate Americas has named retired, former women’s Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) world champion Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc, a Fight Director for the Hispanic sports and media franchise.

The appointment makes Rivera-Calanoc the first Mexican American woman in history to be charged with leading recruitment and matchmaking efforts for a combat sports organization.

Based in Las Vegas, Nev., Rivera-Calanoc, a training partner of former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) world champion Miesha Tate, will be responsible for managing the rapidly expanding field of women athletes that compete for the Combate Americas live television event series, both in the U.S., and internationally in Latin America.

She will also participate in the recruiting and matchmaking processes for the Combate Americas men’s division.

Nutley, NJ (July 13, 2017)–World ranked middleweight Antoine Douglas will now take on late-replacement Juan De Angel. this Friday, July 14th in a 10-round bout that will be contested for the NABA & WBC FECARBOX Middleweight titles.

The bout will headline the non-televised portion of a ShoBox: The New Generation card, which will be televised live on SHOWTIME (10 PM ET/PT, Delayed on the West Coast) at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.

The bout will precede a televised quadruple-header that will feature Keenan Smith (11-0, 5 KOs) fighting Ivan Baranchyk 15-0, 10 KOs) in the eight-round junior welterweight main event. In co-featured bouts, Kenneth Sims, Jr. (12-0, 4 KOs) battles Rolando Chinea (14-1-1, 6 KOs) in a junior welterweight bout, and Glenn Dezurn (9-0, 6 KOs) takes on Adam Lopez (16-1-1, 8 KOs) in a super bantamweight fight. The televised card will kick off with a super bantamweight fight that will pit Joshua Greer (13-1-1, 5 KOs) against LeRoy Davila (5-1, 3 KOs).

Douglas of Washington, DC has a record of 21-1-1 with 15 knockouts, and is ranked No.10 by the WBC.

Since suffering his only professional defeat, Douglas has comeback to score two consecutive knockouts, with the latest being a second round stoppage over Eduardo Mercedes on March 27. In that bout, Douglas captured the WBC FECARBOX Middleweight title.

De Angel of Barranquilla, Colombia has a record of 20-6 with 18 knockouts.

Philadelphia, PA (July 13, 2017) – The scintillating Pennsylvania Junior Middleweight championship bout that took place on June 24th between former two-time world champion Kermit Cintron and knockout artist Tyrone Brunson will have at least four airings in Philadelphia area in the coming weeks.

The first airing will this Friday night, July 14th at 9:30 PM ET on The Comcast Network.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 13, 2017) — Cruiserweight sensation Sam “The Vanilla Gorilla” Crossed (5-0, 3 KOs) of Greenbelt, Maryland, will be stepping back into the squared circle on July 15, at the Sphinx on K in the co-main event. This will be Crossed’s first fight after suffering a broken bone in his right hand in his last bout on Oct.19, 2016, in Charlotte, in which he scored a second round technical knockout of Michael Tillery (0-2).

“I knew I had broken my hand about a minute or so into the fight,” Crossed said. “So i just went out in the second looking for the knockout and I got him out of there.”

“It was my first fight on the road and I had to deal with a lot of adversity, not only with my hand but there was also an issue with weight,” Crossed said. “In North Carolina the fighters can’t weigh more than 15 pounds apart and my opponent came in at 181 pounds.”

Although Crossed had made the contracted weight of 197 pounds, he was 202 pounds when his manager, Mike Walters, received a call from the promoter.

“Christy Martin called me little before 4 p.m. the day of the fight and explained the situation about the weight disparity issue,” Walters explained. “She told me the opponent came in at 181 so Sam had to reweigh and come in at 196 pounds when we checked in with the commission at 5:30 p.m.”

“I didn’t think Sam would be able to drop that kind of weight with those kind of time constraints, but he worked his ass off and did it. He actually came in one pound under at 195 pounds.”

Saturday night, Crossed will be facing southpaw James Jones (4-10, 3 KOs) of Nashville in his first six round bout.

“I know his record doesn’t look great on paper but I can’t underestimate anyone I face.” Crossed said. “He’s got two wins in a row, and he’s always fighting in his opponent’s backyard. I am pretty sure he got screwed in a few of those fights.”

TORONTO (July 12, 2017) – The tension between boxing legend Floyd Mayweather and UFC superstar Conor McGregor boiled over into Toronto on Wednesday as the global stars continued their blockbuster World Tour to announce their Aug. 26 showdown on SHOWTIME PPV from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Olympic silver medal winner Joe Joyce will turn professional later this year under Richard Schaefer’s Ringstar Sports & David Haye.

“It is like a family and I have fitted in well,” Joyce said. “I am surrounded by great people and it is an honor to be around great promoters. I am fit and raring to go. I can’t wait to get back in the ring.”

In August, the 6-foot-6 Joyce, who is turning pro at the late age of 31, lost a controversial split decision to France’s Tony Yoka in the Olympic final. Schaefer also signed Yoka (1-0, 1 KO) and said he hopes to pair them in a rematch down the road.

“It was a bit of a controversial decision against Yoka in the Olympics so, for sure, they should fight a rematch,” Schaefer said. “They fought for the gold medal in the Olympics, so they should fight for a world title as professionals. Joe said to me, ‘Why can’t I fight him in my first fight?’ I said I don’t think that can happen.”

“He is 31 years old so he will turn pro in an eight- or 10-round fight,” Schaefer said. “He’s going to move very quickly. We think within five, six, seven fights he will be ready to go for a world title. His style is very unusual for a heavyweight because he’s such a volume puncher. … He just keeps coming and coming and he is a huge puncher. I think he could win the British and European titles in his first few fights. He is totally ready.”

Lomachenko (8-1, 6 KOs), of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Ukraine, who has won his last five fights by knockout, returns to a Los Angeles ring for the first time in over three years, making his second world title defense of 2017. In Lomachenko’s previous Los Angeles area fight, which took place on June 21, 2014, at StubHub Center, Lomachenko captured his first world title — the vacant WBO featherweight title — winning a scintillating majority decision over the previously unbeaten and future world champion Gary Russell Jr. It remains the only blemish on Russell’s record. It was Lomachenko’s third professional bout, tying him with Thailand’s Saensak Muangsurin for fewest fights to win a world title. Muangsurin won a junior welterweight title in 1975, also in his third professional fight. Lomachenko successfully defend that title three times during his reign before vacating it to challenge three-time WBO junior lightweight champion Roman “Rocky” Martinez on June 11, 2016. The Martinez victory, via a cringe-worthy one-punch knockout in the fifth round, not only made Lomachenko a two-division world champion, but he once again he broke a record doing it, winning world title No. 2 in a record least amount of fights — SEVEN. He followed that with his first defense of the WBO junior lightweight title, on Nov. 26, totally dominating Nicholas Walters. The previously undefeated former WBA featherweight world champion quit on his stool after the seventh round with his trainer and father Jobs Walters, telling referee Tony Weeks, ‘”No mas.” Not only was it a total domination but a boxing masterpiece painted on the canvas by Lomachenko. It concluded a year that had many media outlets declaring Lomachenko the “Fighter of the Year.” In his last fight, on April 8, he stopped former WBA super featherweight world champion Jason “El Canito” Sosa in the ninth round. It was the second most viewed fight on premium cable for 2017. The greatest amateur boxer of his era and arguably of all time, Lomachenko first gained international renown by winning gold medals in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Games as a featherweight and a lightweight, respectively. He retired from the amateurs with a 396-1 record.

Marriaga (25-2, 21 KOs), from Arjona, Colombia, enters this fight having won 15 of his previous 20 fights by way of knockout. The only blemishes on his record, 12-round unanimous decision world title losses to WBO featherweight champion Óscar Valdez, in a ferocious battle on April 22, and former WBA featherweight world champion Nicholas “Axe Man” Walters in 2015. Between those two world championship battles, Marriaga fashioned a five-bout winning streak, which included NABO featherweight title knockout victories against Guy Robb and Eduardo Montoya in 2016 to become the WBO’s No. 1 contender and mandatory challenger to Valdez. In his challenge of world champion Valdez, Marriaga went toe-to-toe throughout the fight in a ring war fight fans are still talking about nearly three months later.

Beltran (33-7-1, 21 KOs), a native of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico who resides in Phoenix, AZ., was recently named the NABF Fighter of the Year. He enters this fight having won his last four fights by knockout. A two-time lightweight world title challenger and a former sparring partner of former eight-division world champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao, Beltran still trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. with Pepe Reilly. In his last fight, in the co-main event to the Terence Crawford – Félix Díaz world title fight on May 20, Beltran scored a sensational one-punch second-round knockout of Top-10 contender Jonathan Maicelo in a world lightweight title elimination bout that also had him retaining his NABF and NABO lightweight titles as well as claiming the vacant WBA International championship belt. It was also a fight that captured the nation’s attention because not only was Beltran fighting for another world title shot but also a new life for himself and his family. Winning his fight against Maicelo may prove to be the deciding factor in getting a green card via the “extraordinary athlete” status needed to qualify for the EB-1 green card typically available to certain sportspeople, entertainers, and masters of the arts and sciences. Recently, he has been in the U.S. under an athletic visa, but risked deportation when that document expired. It was story told by USA Today and followed by NBC News before the fight on “Today” and after on the “NBC Nightly News.” Beltran is currently world-rated No. 2 by the WBO, the World Boxing Council (WBC).and the International Boxing Federation (IBF).

Vasquez (36-2, 19 KOs), from San Jose, Costa Rica, is a former two-time WBA interim super featherweight world champion. His professional resume features victories over Santos Benavides, Jorge Lacierva, René González, Jose Felix, Jr. and Sergio Thompson. He won the WBA interim super featherweight title in 2011, winning a dominant unanimous decision over Benavides. He successfully defended the title the following year via a ninth-round TKO over Lacierva. Later that same year, he unsuccessfully challenged defending WBA super featherweight world champion Takashi Uchiyama losing by an eighth-round TKO. Vasquez recaptured the WBA interim super featherweight title the following year winning a five-round technical decision over González. Vasquez successfully defended the title once in 2014, during his one-year reign, scoring a 12-round unanimous decision over then-undefeated contender Felix. In 2015 he once again challenged for a world title, losing a unanimous decision to undefeated Javier Fortuna. for the vacant WBA super featherweight title. He successfully made his debut as a lightweight last summer, scoring a second-round TKO of Thompson. He is currently world-rated No. 1 by the WBA.
