QUEENSBERRY PROMOTIONS COLLECT MULTIPLE AWARDS AT 2015 WBO CONVENTION
Queensberry Promotions were presented with multiple awards at the 2015 WBO Convention held in Orlando, Florida, this week starting with promoter Frank Warren who was presented with the WBO European Promoter of the Year award.
Warren staged twelve WBO European title bouts in the last twelve months involving some of his top stars including Terry Flanagan, Jack Catterall, Mitchell Smith, Frank Buglioni, Bradley Skeete and Jamie Cox.
The WBO European Fight of the Year was awarded to super-middleweight warriors Frank Buglioni and Lee Markham who ferociously battled to a draw in May this year at the SSE Arena, Wembley, with Buglioni retaining the title.
Manchester sensation Terry Flanagan, the reigning WBO World Lightweight Champion, was named WBO European Fighter of the Year for his tremendous performances in the last twelve months that included his win over Stephen Ormond in a WBO European Lightweight title clash, that led to his shot at the WBO crown against Jose Zepeda, followed by the devastating first title defence against Diego Magdaleno earlier this month.
Queensberry Promotions’ Matchmaker Jason McClory collected the WBO European Matchmaker of the Year award for putting together some top quality 50-50 matches that have thrilled the fights fans’ and viewers’ in the UK on BoxNation, including Jack Catterall v Tom Stalker, Buglioni-Markham and more recently Stalker v Craig Evans.
Hall of Fame promoter Warren, who was at the 28th WBO Convention with his son George, the CEO of Queensberry Promotions and BoxNation, and McClory is delighted with awards.
He said, “I’ve been working with the WBO President Paco Valcarcel and his organisation for many, many, years and they are by far and away the best governing body to work with and I was thrilled to be part of the 28th annual convention in Orlando. We’ve had a fantastic year staging WBO fights and I’m pleased that a number of our talented young prospects are developing through the WBO route like Jack Catterall and Mitchell Smith and they aim to be one day where Terry Flangan is now, as a WBO world champion, and I’m happy that Terry’s tremendous achievements have been recognised with his award. Matchmaking is probably one of the hardest and thankless jobs in the sport, but I was pleased to see our matchmaker Jason McClory get the recognition he deserves in matching some cracking fights this year including the winner of the WBO Fight of the Year winner between Frank Buglioni and Lee Markham. Next year we are aiming high with new WBO World Super-Welterweight Champion Liam Smith, Flanagan, and Billy Joe Saunders to be the flag bearers of the WBO like previous British greats Joe Calzaghe and Naseem Hamed.”

Freitas defeats Moraza-Pollard to capture CES MMA title
LINCOLN, R.I. (Oct. 30th, 2015) – Brazilian Gil de Freitas won the vacant CES MMA Welterweight Title Friday in the main event of “CES MMA XXXI” on AXS TV, submitting Massachusetts vet Chip Moraza-Pollard via kneebar in the opening round of their scheduled five-round bout at Twin River Casino.
Freitas (17-6) finished the fight with just 23 seconds remaining in the opening round, refusing to let Moraza-Pollard off the canvas and instead shooting in for one last submission attempt with time winding down. Freitas has now won five consecutive bouts dating back to 2012, including his AXS TV debut against George Sheppard in August of 2014. Moraza-Pollard was coming off a dominant win over Dany Lauzon in August.
In one of the most highly-anticipated fights of the main card, Cumberland, R.I., bantamweight Kody Nordby (5-3) pulled off the upset, submitting Dinis Paiva (7-6) of East Providence, R.I., via rear naked choke at 2:42 of the opening round, snapping Paiva’s four-fight win streak and earning the fourth first-round submission win of his career.
The two nearly came to blows during the weigh-in, a feud that began in the weeks leading up to the fight. Paiva came out of his corner with a flying knee at the opening bell, but couldn’t connect. Nordby scored the early takedown and finally submitted Paiva after several attempts. Paiva had won three fights by first-round knockout during his hot streak, but couldn’t get back to his feet following Nordby’s early takedown.
Providence’s Greg Rebello (19-6, 11 KOs) opened the main card with a bang, putting Syracuse’s Mike Mucitelli (7-3) with an overhand left at the 3:24 mark of the opening round. The two spent most of the round circling the cage, feeling each other out, until Rebello found his opening and delivered the finishing blow, his 11th career knockout and third consecutive win.
Also highlighting the main card, bantamweight Andre Soukhamthath (9-3, 5 KOs) of Woonsocket, R.I. (Boca Raton, Fla.) returned to Twin River victorious, defeated Carlos Galindo (10-4) of Peru via second-round knockout, earning the stoppage with a series of unanswered elbows at 3:46, and Providence middleweight Eric Spicely (8-0) remained perfect, dominating submission specialist Aaron Johnson (13-10) of Kennesaw, Ga., to earn the unanimous decision, 30-26, on all three scorecards.
Berkely, Mass., middleweight Pat McCrohan (1-0, 1 KO) highlighted the preliminary card with a vicious first-round technical knockout over Maine’s Buck Pineau (1-2), using his college wrestling background to slam Pineau to the canvas, breaking his arm at the 58-second mark.

MURRAY BACKS FIELDING TO BEAT SMITH
Martin Murray believes his gym-mate Rocky Fielding has the perfect game-plan to beat Callum Smith when the two unbeaten Super Middleweights clash for the vacant British title at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on November 7, live on Sky Sports.
Murray and Fielding train with Oliver Harrison in Salford and the St Helens man, who is preparing for his WBO World title challenge against Arthur Abraham on November 28 in Germany, says he’s seen Fielding improve day-by-day in the gym and that he’ll come out on top of a hard fight in Liverpool.
“It’s going to be down to who as the best game-plan and who can stick to it – and they have the perfect combination of Oliver’s game-plan and Rocky being the right man to execute it,” said Murray.
“I’ve seen him and Oliver working intensely over the last few weeks and it looks like it is paying off. We have done a bit of tech sparring together to work on some stuff and you can see that the game-plan is working for him.
“It’s a tough fight and full credit to them for taking it, they could’ve easily avoided each other and gone down different paths but they are putting their uneaten records on the line and that’s brilliant. I think it’ll be a tough 12-round hard fight, I don’t think it will be one-way traffic at all, they will both have spells of success in there.
“Callum is a top fighter, there’s no disputing that. He might be a slight favourite, it looks 50-50 to many people but a lot of folks just favour Callum. I don’t know whether that’s because he’s maybe got a bigger profile or they’ve seen more of him on Sky Sports, but I train with Rocky every day and I know what he is capable of, and if you ask Scott Quigg or Anthony Crolla who they think will win and they will say Callum because they see what he can do every day.
“I know though that when it comes to tough fights, Rocky raises his game, and I think that he will raise his game on November 7. There’s a lot of pressure on them both coming from Liverpool and taking each other on, Liverpool has the best fights fans in England in my opinion and had one of them avoided the other then they would have copped a lot of stick, so they’ve chosen to collide head on and it’s a great fight for everyone involved. There’s going to be a loser but they are both young enough to come again – and if it’s a good fight, they can do it again.
“I know the Smith family well and they are all top lads. I’ll be ringside on the night and I will be nervous for Rocky, but I am confident he can do the job.”
Fielding’s clash with Smith tops a massive night of boxing on Merseyside with the coveted Lord Lonsdale belt taking centre stage as Scotty Cardle defends his Lightweight title against local favourite Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd.
Ricky Burns can take a huge step towards reclaiming his WBO World Lightweight title when he faces Josh King for the Inter-Continental Lightweight title, Prizefighter champion Tom Doran meets Rod Smith in an eliminator for the British Middleweight title and unbeaten Lightweight talent Ohara Davies faces Chris Truman.
Limited tickets are sale now from the Echo Arena website www.echoarena.com and on 0844 8000 400 – priced £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150.
Tickets for November 7 are available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ – StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.
German amateur star Wojcicki signs with Sauerland, debuts on November 21
German amateur star Patrick Wojcicki has signed professional terms with Team Sauerland and will be making his pro debut on November 21 on the undercard of Arthur Abraham’s WBO World Super Middleweight title defence against Martin Murray at the TUI Arena in Hannover, Germany.
‘’This is a dream come true,’’ said Wojcicki. ‘’I’ve been wanting to turn pro for a long time now and finally the time is right. Team Sauerland are one of the biggest and most successful promoters in Europe, and with them guiding my career, I’m sure it will be a success!’’
Promoter Kalle Sauerland has been impressed with what he has seen from Wojcicki so far and expects the 24 year-old’s fan-friendly style to be a hit with boxing audiences.
‘’Stylistically Patrick has always been more suited to the professionals than the amateurs,’’ said Sauerland. ‘’It was his aggressive and attractive style that caught our attention, and I’m sure this will prove popular in the paid ranks.’’
In what weight class Wojcicki will be campaigning is still open for discussion according to Sauerland: ‘’Patrick’s first fight will be at the super middleweight limit but the option remains to move down to middleweight if needs be, and we will make that decision together at the appropriate time.’’
What is for certain is that the London 2012 Olympian’s maiden fight will come on November 21 in Hannover, and that the young fighter is excited to be making his professional bow so close to his hometown of Wolfsburg. ‘’It’s great to be fighting so close to home,‘’ said Wojcicki. ‘’I can’t wait to step into the ring in front of all my friends and family and claim my first professional win!’’
Tickets for the Team Sauerland show on November 21 at the TUI Arena in Hannover featuring the WBO World Super Middleweight Championship contest between Arthur Abraham and Martin Murray are available online via tickethall.de and eventim.de.
Bradley-Rios: A great fight to be first on the B-side
By Norm Frauenheim-
It’s still very much a puzzle, yet the face of boxing in the post Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao era is falling together, piece by haphazard piece, in a process that continues on November 7 with Timothy Bradley-versus-Brandon Rios at Las Vegas’ Thomas & Mack Center.
At a gut level, Bradley-Rios is the best since the search began in the wake of Mayweather’s possible retirement and Pacquiao’s announcement that he’ll fight in April for the last time. Truth is, it doesn’t matter if either or both ever fight again. As the business bids an overdue goodbye, the business re-sets the table while Mayweather re-stocks the garage with Bugatis and Congressman Pacquiao campaigns for a seat in the Filipino Senate.
Over the last few weeks, middleweight Gennady Golovkin and flyweight Roman Gonzales did what they had to in New York. Junior-welterweight Terence Crawford held up his end of the bargain in Omaha. All three looked spectacular in scoring stoppages over opponents few will remember for long.
Did anyone expect anything less? Without that mandatory spectacular, there would have been a lot of gloom-and-doom anguish about what’s next. So far, Golovkin, Gonzalez and Crawford are. The Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez 155-pound winner on Nov. 21 will join them.
But there is no business without a B-side, and the first of those will emerge from Bradley-Rios, a 147-pound fight with high stakes and loaded with stories on all sides. It’s intriguing because both are fighting to stay in line for a major payday. Unlike any other of the aforementioned fights, however, this one is hard to pick.
Rios is fighting for the first time in nearly a year. In his last outing, he scored a stoppage last January of rival Mike Alvarado. But the victory was hard to judge, mostly because Alvarado wasn’t in great condition and seemingly distracted.
Over the idle months, Rios grew impatient. He’s restless and sounds as if he can’t wait to expend some pent-up energy. Or is that frustration? It’s just a guess, but the layoff might have been a blessing in disguise for a 29-year-old welterweight who loves to brawl. It saved him for what promises to be more rounds of attrition in a career full of it. Rios knows no other way. It’s risky. It’s also why fans love him.
Then, there’s Bradley, one of the game’s acknowledged good guys, yet also surrounded by surprising questions. He dumped his only pro trainer Joel Diaz, for Teddy Atlas. It’s a move that makes you wonder how he’ll react with a new face and voice in his corner.
Often, it takes time to develop a personal chemistry between fighter and trainer. Adversity is the only true test. But there’ll be no test drive, not against Rios, an instinctive brawler. Bradley has shown he can withstand the punishing attack promised by Rios. He survived Ruslan Provodnikov in the 2013 Fight of the Year.
But Diaz was there for Provodnikov. If the Rios fight turns into a battle similar to the Provodnikov bout, how would Bradley react stagger between desperate late rounds when he see Atlas instead of Diaz. Who knows?
At 32 and in the last stages of his career, the move to Atlas appears to be a business decision, crafted in part by Bradley’s wife and manager, Monica, who – in an ever-thickening plot — replaced Cameron Dunkin. Dunkin? You guessed it. He is Rios’ manager.
In Atlas, Bradley has a longtime corner man and a successful ESPN ringside analyst. Bradley is trying to move into the broadcasting end of the business himself. He’s working as fledgling analyst for truTV. In Atlas, there are worldwide contacts and world-class experience. But there’s no guarantee of familiarity achieved only amid the chaos of a wild fight.
For now, a wild one is the only good bet.
Rosado – Clottey; Gonzalez – Shabranskyy added to December 19 card; Fights to be shown on HBO Latino
2 fights have been added to the December 19 HBO card at the Turning Stone Resort Casino and will be shown on HBO Latino prior to the Boxing After Dark Card that will feature Luis Ortiz taking on Bryant Jennings and Nicholas Walters battling Jason Sosa according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.
Gabriel Rosado will take on former Welterweight champion Joshua Clottey while Yunieski Gonzalez will take on Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in a Light Heavyweight bout.
“We worked hard to put this card together and we’re very happy with it,” Oscar De La Hoya told ESPN.com. “Four really good fights on one card. It will be a great night to end the year with a bang.”
“Clottey is going up a little bit in weight and Rosado is going down a little bit in weight,” De La Hoya said. “Besides it being a good fight, I think the winner will put himself back in line for an even bigger fight with any of the top junior middleweights or middleweights.”
“Gonzalez and Pascal was a great fight and we saw what Gonzalez could do, so we know we’re throwing Shabranskyy into the fire. But the winner will be knocking on the door to fight the best light heavyweights,” De La Hoya said. “We promote Shabranskyy and, of course, I’m rooting for my guy, but this is a 50-50 fight.”
“It was pleasant to work with Joe and we’re looking forward to doing lots more business with him in the future,” De La Hoya said.
“I like the fights for my guys and I like the card that it’s on,” he said. “It’s a high-profile card and I have high hopes for Yunieski Gonzalez coming off the last fight because I thought he beat Pascal. A lot of people thought he beat Pascal.
“For Joshua, it will be a little higher weight than usual but I think it’s the kind of card and kind of higher-profile fight that can put him in position to be where he has been — in world title contention.”

He has decimated all opposition that has been placed in front of him and will look to continue his dominance beginning with his first title defense against Yago Bryan.
Yago Bryan is a mixed martial artist from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. An all-rounded fighter, Bryan will be looking to continue his winning ways when he steps inside the ONE Cage. He jumps straight into a world title fight as he takes on defending champion, Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke in his ONE Championship debut.
In addition, Alain “The Panther” Ngalani returns to the ONE Cage as he battles Igor Subora in a heavyweight bout that is sure to leave fans on the edge of their seats.
Cameroonian Alain Ngalani is a powerful heavyweight kickboxer and Muay Thai champion. Fighting out Hong Kong, Ngalani is eager to return to the ONE Cage after a setback last year in his rematch against Chi Lewis Parry in ONE: WAR OF DRAGONS in Taiwan sent him back to the drawing board. Ngalani will take on Igor Subora in what should be a powerful matchup.
Igor Subora of the Ukraine trains all across Asia, particularly in the Philippines. He is a former champion in another promotion and boasts a solid skillset which consists of technical striking and hard-nosed grappling. Subora is one of the most talented big men on the ONE Championship roster, but he’ll have his hands full against the strength of Alain Ngalani, who he takes on next.
Last month, Martin Nguyen fell short of the interim ONE Featherweight World Championship to Marat Gafurov. The loss provided lots of learning for the talented 26-year old from Sydney, Australia, and has also equipped him with a lot of valuable experience. Nguyen is itching to get back inside the ONE Cage as soon as possible to resume his promising career. Standing in his way is Filipino featherweight Edward Kelly.
Edward Kelly is a product of Team Lakay and has trained with world-class talents in the high altitudes of Baguio City. Kelly is armed with both striking and grappling as part of his wide range of abilities. After defeating Jimmy Yabo by submission in his last fight, he will look to replicate his success against another solid opponent in Martin Nguyen.
Benedict Ang made a successful ONE Championship and professional MMA debut in his last outing, defeating Waqar Umar by decision. The 19-year old Ang has proven his mettle in three rounds of intense action and will now look to continue his young career against Yohan Mulia Legowo of Indonesia.
Yohan Mulia Legowo is one of Indonesia’s most talented mixed martial arts veterans. With a record of seven wins against only three losses, Legowo seeks his first victory inside the ONE Cage. He will take on Singapore’s Benedict Ang, a fighter 16 years his junior, in a bantamweight bout that is sure to produce fireworks.
Kicking things off for ONE: PRIDE OF LIONS will be two featherweight prospects. Winner of ONE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS Featherweight Tournament, China’s Li Kai Wen has enjoyed two victories so far inside the ONE Cage. He now looks for victory number three against Hong Kong’s Nathan Ng, who was also victorious in his ONE Championship debut.

SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION ANDRE WARD RETURNS TO THE RING SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21 WHEN HE MAKES HIS DEBUT AT 175 POUNDS
NEW YORK, NY (October 29, 2015) – Roc Nation Sports is pleased to announce that Two-Time World Champion and top-rated pound-for-pound fighter Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will return to the ring on Saturday, Nov. 21 in the co- feature to the Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez middleweight world championship showdown that will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View. Ward has signed an exclusive multi-fight agreement with HBO that will commence with Ward’s Nov. 21 fight at The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Having cleaned out the super middleweight division, Ward, 31, will be making his debut in the 175-pound light heavyweight division against an opponent to be announced.
“HBO is the premier network in boxing and has been a great home to me both as a fighter and a commentator,” Ward said. “I made my professional debut on HBO nearly 11 years ago and I’m excited to move on to this next stage of my career at the light heavyweight division on HBO. My team and I have been hard at work preparing for Nov. 21 and the fans can expect another strong performance in Las Vegas.”
“All of us at Roc Nation Sports are thrilled to partner with HBO as we embark on the next chapter in the storied career of Andre Ward,” said David Itskowitch, COO Boxing Roc Nation Sports. “Starting this multi-fight agreement and Andre’s quest to conquer the light heavyweight division with a fight on the highly anticipated Nov. 21 pay-per-view event is a fitting way to kick things off. We are hopeful that Nov. 21 is the first step toward a 2016 showdown with Sergey Kovalev.”
“From Olympic gold medalist, to two-time world champion, to winning all 28 of his professional bouts and dominating the super middleweight division, Andre Ward has demonstrated that he is among the finest performers in the sport,” said Ken Hershman, President, HBO Sports. “We are delighted to have Andre as part of our family, fighting exclusively on the HBO platforms.”
“Andre is a man of high integrity and honor so we are thrilled to be able to help deliver a multi-fight deal for him on the premier network in boxing,” said James Prince and Josh Dubin, Ward’s management team. “In moving to light heavyweight, we have no doubt that Andre will pick up where he left off in the super middleweight division – as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. We are extremely thankful to HBO and Roc Nation Sports for the opportunity.”
Known for his strong character and integrity outside the ring and his warrior’s instinct inside it, Ward’s skill and talent were apparent early in his outstanding amateur career. He racked up every title in the books, culminating with a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. As the only male American boxer to claim Olympic gold since 1996, Ward joined the likes of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya. He turned professional on December 18, 2004, scoring a second round technical knockout victory over Chris Molina at Staples Center in a fight that was televised live on HBO. He has gone on to rack up 27 more victories since then, building an ever-growing legion of fans in the process. After becoming the Ring Magazine and WBA Super Middleweight World Champion, rising to the number two spot on the pound-for-pound list and winning the 2011 Fighter of the Year Award (ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America), it was announced that Ward signed an exclusive promotional agreement with Roc Nation Sports in January 2015, opening a new chapter in his storied boxing career. The Bay Area product returned to the ring on June 20, 2015 at the Oracle Arena in front of his hometown fans in Oakland, California and scored a ninth-round knockout over Paul Smith, continuing his unbeaten streak which dates back to when he was a 13 year old amateur. Ward recently stepped in front of the camera for a completely different role, a part in the upcoming New Line/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/Warner Bros. feature “Creed,” hitting theaters on November 25, a few days following fight week. Fellow Bay Area natives, director Ryan Coogler and the film’s star Michael B. Jordan, reached out to Ward so that he could provide his expertise for the film. In addition to working in front of the camera with Ward, Jordan spent time at Ward’s home gym in preparation for his role as Apollo Creed’s son.
