Bradley-Rios: A great fight to be first on the B-side

By Norm Frauenheim-

It’s still very much a puzzle, yet the face of boxing in the post Floyd Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao era is falling together, piece by haphazard piece, in a process that continues on November 7 with Timothy Bradley-versus-Brandon Rios at Las Vegas’ Thomas & Mack Center.

At a gut level, Bradley-Rios is the best since the search began in the wake of Mayweather’s possible retirement and Pacquiao’s announcement that he’ll fight in April for the last time. Truth is, it doesn’t matter if either or both ever fight again. As the business bids an overdue goodbye, the business re-sets the table while Mayweather re-stocks the garage with Bugatis and Congressman Pacquiao campaigns for a seat in the Filipino Senate.

Over the last few weeks, middleweight Gennady Golovkin and flyweight Roman Gonzales did what they had to in New York. Junior-welterweight Terence Crawford held up his end of the bargain in Omaha. All three looked spectacular in scoring stoppages over opponents few will remember for long.

Did anyone expect anything less? Without that mandatory spectacular, there would have been a lot of gloom-and-doom anguish about what’s next. So far, Golovkin, Gonzalez and Crawford are. The Miguel Cotto-Canelo Alvarez 155-pound winner on Nov. 21 will join them.

But there is no business without a B-side, and the first of those will emerge from Bradley-Rios, a 147-pound fight with high stakes and loaded with stories on all sides. It’s intriguing because both are fighting to stay in line for a major payday. Unlike any other of the aforementioned fights, however, this one is hard to pick.

Rios is fighting for the first time in nearly a year. In his last outing, he scored a stoppage last January of rival Mike Alvarado. But the victory was hard to judge, mostly because Alvarado wasn’t in great condition and seemingly distracted.

Over the idle months, Rios grew impatient. He’s restless and sounds as if he can’t wait to expend some pent-up energy. Or is that frustration? It’s just a guess, but the layoff might have been a blessing in disguise for a 29-year-old welterweight who loves to brawl. It saved him for what promises to be more rounds of attrition in a career full of it. Rios knows no other way. It’s risky. It’s also why fans love him.

Then, there’s Bradley, one of the game’s acknowledged good guys, yet also surrounded by surprising questions. He dumped his only pro trainer Joel Diaz, for Teddy Atlas. It’s a move that makes you wonder how he’ll react with a new face and voice in his corner.

Often, it takes time to develop a personal chemistry between fighter and trainer. Adversity is the only true test. But there’ll be no test drive, not against Rios, an instinctive brawler. Bradley has shown he can withstand the punishing attack promised by Rios. He survived Ruslan Provodnikov in the 2013 Fight of the Year.

But Diaz was there for Provodnikov. If the Rios fight turns into a battle similar to the Provodnikov bout, how would Bradley react stagger between desperate late rounds when he see Atlas instead of Diaz. Who knows?

At 32 and in the last stages of his career, the move to Atlas appears to be a business decision, crafted in part by Bradley’s wife and manager, Monica, who – in an ever-thickening plot — replaced Cameron Dunkin. Dunkin? You guessed it. He is Rios’ manager.

In Atlas, Bradley has a longtime corner man and a successful ESPN ringside analyst. Bradley is trying to move into the broadcasting end of the business himself. He’s working as fledgling analyst for truTV. In Atlas, there are worldwide contacts and world-class experience. But there’s no guarantee of familiarity achieved only amid the chaos of a wild fight.

For now, a wild one is the only good bet.

Rosado – Clottey; Gonzalez – Shabranskyy added to December 19 card; Fights to be shown on HBO Latino

Gabriel Rosado
2 fights have been added to the December 19 HBO card at the Turning Stone Resort Casino and will be shown on HBO Latino prior to the Boxing After Dark Card that will feature Luis Ortiz taking on Bryant Jennings and Nicholas Walters battling Jason Sosa according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

Gabriel Rosado will take on former Welterweight champion Joshua Clottey while Yunieski Gonzalez will take on Vyacheslav Shabranskyy in a Light Heavyweight bout.

“We worked hard to put this card together and we’re very happy with it,” Oscar De La Hoya told ESPN.com. “Four really good fights on one card. It will be a great night to end the year with a bang.”

“Clottey is going up a little bit in weight and Rosado is going down a little bit in weight,” De La Hoya said. “Besides it being a good fight, I think the winner will put himself back in line for an even bigger fight with any of the top junior middleweights or middleweights.”

“Gonzalez and Pascal was a great fight and we saw what Gonzalez could do, so we know we’re throwing Shabranskyy into the fire. But the winner will be knocking on the door to fight the best light heavyweights,” De La Hoya said. “We promote Shabranskyy and, of course, I’m rooting for my guy, but this is a 50-50 fight.”

“It was pleasant to work with Joe and we’re looking forward to doing lots more business with him in the future,” De La Hoya said.

“I like the fights for my guys and I like the card that it’s on,” he said. “It’s a high-profile card and I have high hopes for Yunieski Gonzalez coming off the last fight because I thought he beat Pascal. A lot of people thought he beat Pascal.

“For Joshua, it will be a little higher weight than usual but I think it’s the kind of card and kind of higher-profile fight that can put him in position to be where he has been — in world title contention.”

After defeating Jimmy Yabo by submission in his last fight, he will look to replicate his success against another solid opponent in Martin Nguyen.

Benedict Ang made a successful ONE Championship and professional MMA debut in his last outing, defeating Waqar Umar by decision. The 19-year old Ang has proven his mettle in three rounds of intense action and will now look to continue his young career against Yohan Mulia Legowo of Indonesia.

Yohan Mulia Legowo is one of Indonesia’s most talented mixed martial arts veterans. With a record of seven wins against only three losses, Legowo seeks his first victory inside the ONE Cage. He will take on Singapore’s Benedict Ang, a fighter 16 years his junior, in a bantamweight bout that is sure to produce fireworks.

Kicking things off for ONE: PRIDE OF LIONS will be two featherweight prospects. Winner of ONE: DYNASTY OF CHAMPIONS Featherweight Tournament, China’s Li Kai Wen has enjoyed two victories so far inside the ONE Cage. He now looks for victory number three against Hong Kong’s Nathan Ng, who was also victorious in his ONE Championship debut.

SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION ANDRE WARD RETURNS TO THE RING SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21 WHEN HE MAKES HIS DEBUT AT 175 POUNDS

Andre Ward Post Fight
NEW YORK, NY (October 29, 2015) – Roc Nation Sports is pleased to announce that Two-Time World Champion and top-rated pound-for-pound fighter Andre Ward (28-0, 15 KOs) will return to the ring on Saturday, Nov. 21 in the co- feature to the Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez middleweight world championship showdown that will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View. Ward has signed an exclusive multi-fight agreement with HBO that will commence with Ward’s Nov. 21 fight at The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Having cleaned out the super middleweight division, Ward, 31, will be making his debut in the 175-pound light heavyweight division against an opponent to be announced.

“HBO is the premier network in boxing and has been a great home to me both as a fighter and a commentator,” Ward said. “I made my professional debut on HBO nearly 11 years ago and I’m excited to move on to this next stage of my career at the light heavyweight division on HBO. My team and I have been hard at work preparing for Nov. 21 and the fans can expect another strong performance in Las Vegas.”

“All of us at Roc Nation Sports are thrilled to partner with HBO as we embark on the next chapter in the storied career of Andre Ward,” said David Itskowitch, COO Boxing Roc Nation Sports. “Starting this multi-fight agreement and Andre’s quest to conquer the light heavyweight division with a fight on the highly anticipated Nov. 21 pay-per-view event is a fitting way to kick things off. We are hopeful that Nov. 21 is the first step toward a 2016 showdown with Sergey Kovalev.”

“From Olympic gold medalist, to two-time world champion, to winning all 28 of his professional bouts and dominating the super middleweight division, Andre Ward has demonstrated that he is among the finest performers in the sport,” said Ken Hershman, President, HBO Sports. “We are delighted to have Andre as part of our family, fighting exclusively on the HBO platforms.”

“Andre is a man of high integrity and honor so we are thrilled to be able to help deliver a multi-fight deal for him on the premier network in boxing,” said James Prince and Josh Dubin, Ward’s management team. “In moving to light heavyweight, we have no doubt that Andre will pick up where he left off in the super middleweight division – as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. We are extremely thankful to HBO and Roc Nation Sports for the opportunity.”

Known for his strong character and integrity outside the ring and his warrior’s instinct inside it, Ward’s skill and talent were apparent early in his outstanding amateur career. He racked up every title in the books, culminating with a gold medal in the light heavyweight division at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. As the only male American boxer to claim Olympic gold since 1996, Ward joined the likes of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya. He turned professional on December 18, 2004, scoring a second round technical knockout victory over Chris Molina at Staples Center in a fight that was televised live on HBO. He has gone on to rack up 27 more victories since then, building an ever-growing legion of fans in the process. After becoming the Ring Magazine and WBA Super Middleweight World Champion, rising to the number two spot on the pound-for-pound list and winning the 2011 Fighter of the Year Award (ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Ring Magazine and the Boxing Writers Association of America), it was announced that Ward signed an exclusive promotional agreement with Roc Nation Sports in January 2015, opening a new chapter in his storied boxing career. The Bay Area product returned to the ring on June 20, 2015 at the Oracle Arena in front of his hometown fans in Oakland, California and scored a ninth-round knockout over Paul Smith, continuing his unbeaten streak which dates back to when he was a 13 year old amateur. Ward recently stepped in front of the camera for a completely different role, a part in the upcoming New Line/Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/Warner Bros. feature “Creed,” hitting theaters on November 25, a few days following fight week. Fellow Bay Area natives, director Ryan Coogler and the film’s star Michael B. Jordan, reached out to Ward so that he could provide his expertise for the film. In addition to working in front of the camera with Ward, Jordan spent time at Ward’s home gym in preparation for his role as Apollo Creed’s son.

PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS FIGHTERS SHARE HALLOWEEN FAVORITES, MEMORIES & MORE!

LAS VEGAS (October 29, 2015) – Halloween is the spookiest time of the year. The holiday is known to expose the inner scaredy cat in people of all ages, including the toughest athletes.

Several Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) fighters took time out to share their favorite Halloween memories along with what gives them a fright. Just because one is tough in the ring doesn’t mean they’re tough enough for Halloween.

(Fighters are listed alphabetically)

Do you have a favorite Halloween costume you’ve worn in the past?

Chris Arreola (Heavyweight contender) – “I just like dressing up as something super creepy. I’m dressing up as a mime this year, but giving it my own little spin.”

Andre Dirrell (2004 Olympic Bronze medalist) – “I’m a festive guy to begin with and Halloween is my favorite holiday. I went all out on this one costume. It’s a ghoul that makes me approximately 10 feet tall when I wear it. I actually got an offer to work at a haunted house because the costume is so great, and I did it for about an hour and a half before I got too cold and had to quit to go inside. Michigan winters are no joke.”

Anthony Dirrell (Former world champion defeated Marco Antonio Rubio on September 6 on PBC on CBS) – “I didn’t really wear them when I was growing up. We really couldn’t afford them. I’d usually just draw something on my face.”

Miguel Flores (Undefeated featherweight prospect) – “Never really wore costumes because of my parents, who were old school.”

Danny Garcia (Undefeated star defeated Paulie Malignaggi on August 1 on PBC on ESPN) -“The Scream mask because that was one of my favorite scary movies when it first came out.”

No one knew that it was me in the costume and I was going into stores and scaring people and boxing on them. It was fun.”

Erislandy Lara (Super welterweight world champion, fights Jan Zaveck on November 25 on PBC on ESPN) – “No, it all depends on what my wife and kids decide that year (laughs).”

Danny Garcia – “Milk Duds. It doesn’t’ bother me that it gets stuck in my teeth or anything.”

Tony Harrison – “I don’t really have one type favorite type of candy. When I was younger we used to always go to the rich neighborhoods where they give out the big candy bars, not the little fun-sized ones. We’d go back two and three times, hit them again and again. They didn’t care and we loved it.”

Daniel Jacobs – “Candy corn. For Halloween that is my favorite candy, but it doesn’t come around that often and I like that.”

Erislandy Lara – “Chocolate Kinder from Germany. My wife is from Germany and once I tasted them I was scared I would have to fight at heavyweight.”

Jermell Charlo – “I used to compete with my brother to see who could get the most Halloween candy, I remember doing that.”

Ahmed Elbiali – “My friends and I used to egg houses and jack candy baskets for ourselves. It was a bit devious but fun.”

Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. – “I don’t have a favorite memory, because I like every Halloween because of the candy and scary people.”

Tony Harrison – “My favorite memories were never about candy or anything like that. When I got to be a teenager, my friends and I used to get together and do all kinds of crazy stuff on Halloween night. We had a ball starting trouble. Now that I’m more mature I realize that wasn’t the right way to act, but it was the time of my life back then.”

Edwin Rodriguez – “I don’t really like Halloween so I never cared too much about it. My kids love it though and they’re dressing up as Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach this year. It’s a big deal to them.”

Leo Santa Cruz – “When we were younger, my cousins used to jump in front of cars with masks on and start dancing really funny or making funny moves and the people in the cars would start laughing.”

Tony Thompson – “I love any of the DC Comics super heroes. I remember liking all of them.”

Sammy Vasquez Jr. – “My favorite Halloween memory is when I scared these older, bigger kids who were trick or treating. When they came to the house I hid behind the bushes with a bloody Jason mask and jumped out and chased them. They threw their buckets of candy in the air and were pushing and running after each other. I got all the candy they left behind!”

Do you have a favorite scary movie?

Chris Arreola- “The Paranormal Activity movies are the best.”

Mario Barrios- “The movie It. That clown was creepy.”

Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. – “Friday the 13th.”

Tony Harrison – “I used to be scared of the Candyman. You’d say his name three times in the mirror and then he’d come get you. I was terrified of that stuff becoming true. My older cousins used to say things to make us believe crazy stories like that, so I was scared of the Candymanuntil I knew better.”

Daniel Jacobs – “I love scary movies. I like American Horror Story. That is more of a series, but it is really good.”

Erislandy Lara – ” I don’t like scary movies (laughs).”

Abner Mares – “All of the Chucky movies”

Aron Martinez- “I really liked Paranormal Activity.”

John Molina Jr. – “Scary movies scare me. The Exorcist is really scary.”

Edwin Rodriguez – “Friday the 13th. And funny, my fight is also on Friday the 13th.”

Andre Dirrell – “I might get scared of a really big dog, but I don’t scare easy. As a youngster I used to watch all the scary stuff by myself, so nothing really gets to me now. There’s actually a new series on TV called Hellevator and I filled out an application to be on the show because I love that type of stuff.”

Anthony Dirrell- “Nothing scares me. I’ll do anything.”

Ahmed Elbiali – ” Heights.”

Miguel Flores- ” Dark places.”

Danny Garcia – “Nothing to be honest. I am a fighter. I’m crazy already. I’m not afraid of ghosts or anything.”

Tony Harrison – “Not becoming ‘something’ scares me the most. I just want to be remembered for something great.”

Daniel Jacobs- “I think waking up in the middle of the night and seeing stuff in the dark and thinking it is something scary or demonic. When you first wake up and you see things and you’re eyes aren’t open and things aren’t what they seem. That happened to me like three weeks ago!”

Erislandy Lara- ” Death.

Aron Martinez – “I’m scared of rollercoasters and scary movies.”

John Molina Jr. – “Scary movies scare me. The Exorcist is really scary.”

Edwin Rodriguez – “I’m not trying to act hard, but I can’t really think of something that scares me.”

Leo Santa Cruz – “Being alone at night is scary sometimes.”

Tony Thompson – “The only thing that scares me is not being able to provide for my kids.”

Sammy Vasquez Jr. – “I’m scared of the unknown, like going into a haunted place by myself and not knowing what’s around the corner.”

Undefeated Welterweight Javier Flores takes on Jamie Herrera on November 5, 2015 for the WBC United States National Welterweight Championship

Javier Poster
On Thursday, November 5th in Washington DC, Javier “El Chino” Flores will step in the ring at the 25th Annual Fight for Children Night with the WBC United States National Welterweight Championship (“USNBC”) on the line. Flores, one of Roc Nation’s most promising prospects, has been in the game for some time but is now poised to take the next step towards a championship as he battles a tough Jaime Herrera (12-1-3 7 KOs) in a 10 round bout.

Flores of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico is currently in camp in Orlando, Florida and is training hard for his first title opportunity. Said Flores, “camp has been very good and we are working hard to bring home the victory to Puerto Rico.” The southpaw Flores is a come forward fan friendly fighter who describes himself as a power boxer that can box from the outside or rumble on the inside. His current record stands at an impressive 12-0 with 11 KOs. Having been sidelined previously with managerial issues, Flores is ready to increase his activity level and show that he is the best fighter in Roc Nation’s stable not named Miguel Cotto or Andre Ward. Flores feels the timing is right for him to break out and establish his own name. In Herrera, Flores is facing a battle- tested veteran who has victories over Patrick Boozer, Michael Finney and his biggest win to date when he stopped former world title challenger Mike Jones just 15 months ago. Said Flores of Herrera, “he’s a durable fighter, very strong. He likes to come forward and is not afraid to mix it up, which I like. We are preparing for a war and working hard to make sure that we come out victorious on November 5th.”

Fores is managed by boxing attorney Rick Torres of Victory Sports & Entertainment and noted boxing advisor Gaby Penagaricano. Said Torres, “we feel Chino is ready to take the next step and that he will soon be ready to challenge the best of the Welterweight division. We’re very appreciative of the opportunity that Roc Nation has given us and are confident Chino will deliver a title on November 5th; we’re also honored to take part in such a prestigious charity event in Washington DC and know that Chino is going to steal the show.”

IBF WORLD BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPION RANDY “EL MATADOR” CABALLERO TO MAKE HIS FIRST TITLE DEFENSE AGAINST LEE HASKINS HEADLINING THE COTTO-CANELO PRELIMINARY UNDERCARD ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21 FROM THE MANDALAY BAY EVENTS CENTER

Randy_Caballero
LOS ANGELES (October 29, 2015) – Making the first defense of his IBF Bantamweight World Title, Randy “El Matador” Caballero (22-0, 13 KOs) will headline the preliminary undercard preceding the HBO Pay-Per-View® telecast of the Miguel Cotto vs. Canelo Alvarez event on Saturday, November 21 as he faces off against England’s Lee “Playboy” Haskins (32-3, 14 KOs) at The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The 12-round world championship bout will be available to view digitally on HBO Boxing’s YouTube Page, TIDAL.com and GoldenBoyPromotions.com, along with other websites and outlets to be announced shortly. Additional undercard fights will be announced separately.

“I am excited to be fighting in one of the biggest cards of the year,” said Caballero. “I have been out of the ring for about a year and it has been hard watching all the great shows, but I am ready to come out strong and defend my title. I know Lee is a tough guy, there is a reason why he is my mandatory, but his style will make me shine on fight night. This training camp has been wonderful, my body feels different, and we have been training very hard to make sure I remain the champion. I feel there is more to accomplish, and this is my big opportunity to shine and stand out on Nov. 21.”

“Randy has the charisma, athleticism, fan-friendly fighting style and now a world title to make him one of the future top stars in the sport,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Fans watching Randy’s fight live at The Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and at home on the preliminary undercard on Nov. 21 are in for a real treat when he makes his first title defense against Lee Haskins, who, like Randy, is one of the top fighters in the bantamweight division right now. This fight will be a clash between two warriors and a great precursor to the guaranteed action in the main event with Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez that night.”

“All my life I have dreamed about boxing in Las Vegas and now my dreams have come true,” said Haskins. “I have great respect for Randy Caballero, and I will be in the best shape of my life with all intentions of bringing the IBF World Bantamweight belt home. You best believe I am as fit as a butcher`s dog. I am counting the days for when I arrive in U.S.A. Let’s get it on!”

The fighting pride of the Coachella Valley in California, Randy “El Matador” Caballero is one of the sport’s most intriguing rising stars and as the IBF World Bantamweight Champion prepares for his Las Vegas debut, he is on the verge of taking his career to the next level in a big way. “El Matador” Caballero has gone from local hero to international standout over the course of a professional career that began in 2010, as his meteoric rise has seen him defeat the likes of Alexis “Beaver” Santiago, Jose Luis “Tapitas” Araiza, Manuel “Suavecito” Roman and Luis “Titi” Maldonado. In 2014, the 25-year-old took his show on the road as he traveled to Kobe, Japan to defeat Kohei Oba via eighth-round technical knockout. The victory earned the 24-year-old Caballero a shot at a world championship, and on October 25, 2014 he packed his bags once again, as he traveled to the Salle des ‘Etoiles in Monte Carlo to defeat England’s Stuart Hall for the vacant IBF World Bantamweight Championship.

British southpaw Lee “Playboy” Haskins has had a big 2015 campaign thus far. The Bristol native regained the EBU Bantamweight Title in February with a decision win over Omar Lamiri and then took the interim IBF Bantamweight crown in June by stopping Ryosuke Iwasa in six rounds. This November, the 31-year-old will attempt to unify the title with the highly touted Caballero and is determined to go back to England with the belt.

SALITA CARD BOASTS GLOBAL TALENT

ROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2015) – New York promoter Dmitriy Salita’s cards are always filled with combatants from all over the world, a United Nations of pugilistic pride.

This Thursday night’s “Brooklyn Brawl” is no exception.

Many of the flags being waved as the boxers walk to the ring will be clustered around the Eastern European zone. That area is furnishing talented and aggressive hitters, such as Serdar Hudayberdiyev, a 2012 Olympian and Asian games champion born in Turkmenistan. He will make his pro debut on the Salita Promotions card which is to take place at the Aviator complex in south Brooklyn.

The flag of Kazakhstan, home to pound for pound ace Gennady Golovkin, will be on display at the Aviator.

Bakhtiyar Eyubov, making his home in Brooklyn, NY. Some believe the junior middleweight will rise to Golovkin levels; now he sports an 8-0 record, with 8 KOs.

A blue-chip prospect from the republic of Georgia, Giorgi Gelashvili, a three-time Georgian national champion, will face a stern test when he faces Rashad Bogar of NJ. The 2-0 super lightweight looks to stay unbeaten and extend his KO streak to three in a row in Brooklyn.

The five boroughs of NY are always representing at a Salita show; on Thursday, the Bronx will be in the house, rooting on cruiserweight Emilio Salas. Oh, and he comes from Puerto Rican, so that flag will be displayed on fight night as well.

Local NYC favorite Mikkel LesPierre, a super lightweight, will return to Brooklyn Brawl and look to remain undefeated; he’s 10-0-1 and opening eyes as a solid prospect.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the first bout scheduled for 6:30 p.m., as the Brooklyn Brawl looks to once again captivate New York City with fistic fury. Tickets begin at $20 and are available by calling 1-844-890-2120 or by visiting SalitaPromotions.com.

Fan favourite Sarkozi hopes to bring the British title back to Bristol

LONDON (29 OCTOBER) Bristol-born light-middleweight Dan Sarkozi is yet to box outside his home city as a professional and hopes that one day he will be able to reward his loyal supporters with a British title.

The 26-year-old’s sixth professional outing takes place on November 14 at Bristol’s City Academy and, though he’s happy to take it one step at a time, his goal remains the same as it was back when he turned pro in November 2013 – win that British title.

“My primary goal is to win the British title,” he said. “That was my goal when I turned pro and it’s still my goal now. I’ll take each fight as it comes, I train hard every day, even when I don’t have a fight lined up, and I’m fully committed to achieving that goal and becoming British champion.”

A fan of Alexis Arguello, Nigel Benn and Ricky Hatton, Sarkozi has resisted the temptation to adopt his heroes’ aggressive style of fighting and has instead become known in the Bristol area for his skills on the back foot. It’s a style that has seen him become very popular in the last couple of years.

“I’ve always been a bit more of a skills man,” he said. “People said to me when I was coming through, ‘Fans don’t want to see the skills, they want to see the brawling.’ But maybe that’s not the case. The fans come out in their numbers to watch me. I think fans can watch all the brawling they want at white-collar shows – and there’s a lot of them about nowadays – but they like to come to the boxing shows to see a bit more skill.

“I’m really looking forward to my next fight on November 14. I love the City Academy as a venue. The staff are really helpful, it’s clean, well-organised and the atmosphere is amazing. The hall is just the right size, too, and it helps build a good atmosphere. I always get very generous support and I’m very appreciative of that. I want to turn this place into my little fortress.”

Like many who box alongside him at the Bristol Boxing Gym, Sarkozi looks to the standards set by gym mate Lee Haskins and hopes to one day emulate his success.

“Lee’s taught me a really valuable lesson,” said Sarkozi. “He’s taught me that persistence pays off in the end. I’ve spent a lot of time training with Lee and I’ve been in the gym with him for years. I think I was sixteen when I first entered the gym. I’ve seen all the ups and downs, the highs and lows. He’s now getting the rewards for sticking in there and never giving up.

“I remember everyone saying he wouldn’t beat Don Broadhurst, but he did. Then Sky Sports didn’t want to show any of his fights, so he was thrown into the wilderness a bit. After that he won the European title, but then he had that setback against Stephane Jamoye. He could’ve packed it in then and nobody would have argued.

“To make matters worse, he had to witness two people he’d beaten – Stuart Hall and Jamie McDonnell – both win world titles after fighting him. That would have made lesser men give up. It says a lot about the man’s character and determination that he never did that.”

Now seemingly better than ever, Sarkozi fully expects Haskins to fulfil his dream of becoming world champion on November 21 in Las Vegas.

“I believe he’s going to go to Vegas and knock out Randy Caballero,” he said. “I’ve watched a lot of the guy and I’m confident Lee will do a number on him with his speed and his power. From what I’ve seen of Caballero, he has a pretty basic style and he won’t have encountered anyone quite like Lee Haskins before.”

MEXICAN SUPERSTAR CANELO ÁLVAREZ SAN DIEGO MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES

Canelo_Alvarez
LOS ANGELES (Oct. 29, 2015) – Mariachis, cake, balloons, streamers and screaming fans were all on deck to greet Canelo Álvarez (45-1-1, 32 KOs),former WBC and WBA Super Welterweight World Champion, at his San Diego media workout today at House of Boxing Gym ahead of his Nov. 21 middleweight world championship showdown against WBC, Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs).

Oscar De La Hoya, chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, surprised Canelo at the workout with a special presentation to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Mexican superstar fighter’s first professional fight, a fourth-round technical knockout that took place Oct. 29, 2005 in his hometown of Jalisco, Mexico.

Below is what Canelo, Oscar De La Hoya and his team had to say:

CANELO ÁLVAREZ, Former WBC and WBA Super Welterweight World Champion:

“We are very prepared for this fight. It has been a great training camp we have been working on technique to make sure we are not surprised on fight night.

“I have had great sparring partners for this fight, focusing on Cotto’s style of fighting. We also know he is a southpaw and that has been something we always work on.

“I am not afraid of any fighter, but right now I am focused on Cotto. Once this fight is over we can move on to the next big fight.

“Every fight at this level has been difficult and the best that we can do is, be prepared. You can’t predict the outcome of a fight, but we make sure to leave not doubts in the ring.

“I want to fight the big fights and am not afraid to take risks. I believe my fighting style and opponents over the years have shown that. I am here to prove I am the best and the best way to do that is fighting the best.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:

“Canelo Álvarez is ready for November 21. I’ve visited his training camp many times and he is looking great, very strong, very powerful.

“Canelo has been fighting for 10 years now, but he’s still only 25-years-old. I think the best is yet to come with him. He has grown as a fighter every year, learning from victories and his losses. Legacy is important to him, and when all is said and done, I know he will be remembered as one of the best in the sport.

“November 21 will be a war in the ring. There will be fireworks, and Cotto vs. Canelo will be remembered as another great fight in the historic Mexico vs. Puerto Rico rivalry.”

CHEPO REYNOSO, Manager and Trainer for Canelo Álvarez:

“I have great respect for Freddie personally, but it is a different kind of respect when you’re in the ring. I am sure Cotto has preparing for this fight, but Canelo has the power, speed and youth to be the best fighter on Nov. 21.

“I have seen Canelo grow as a fighter his whole career and I believe he is ready to become the future of boxing and beating Cotto will prove it.

“Every fighter has learned from their experiences and Canelo and continues to progress as a fighter. He is only getting better and is a different, stronger, fighter compared to few years ago.

“Every day we are pushing Canelo and he does everything without question. He is a dedicated and hungry fighter who takes his career seriously. On Nov. 21 we will raise our arm in victory for Mexico.”

EDDY REYNOSO, Head Trainer for Canelo Álvarez:

“Canelo is a serious fighter who doesn’t take any opponent lightly. He is always ready and willing to fight the best fighters in the sport.

“This is one of the biggest fights in the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry. And we will prove on Nov. 21 that Mexico is the best.”

Tim Bradley and Brandon Rios Media Workout Quotes,

Timothy Bradley
BRANDON RIOS

“We are ready for the best Tim Bradley, the one who beat Juan Manuel Marquez. I have been in camp in Riverside, California for three months. This is the Camp Zone. We brought in three kinds of sparring partners — a boxer, a brawler and a boxer-brawler. I want to get back on top in boxing. Bradley is in my way. Bradley is going to be my ticket back to the top.”

ROBERT GARCIA

“The way to beat Tim Bradley is to put on pressure in the fight and try to knock him out. We plan to cut off the ring and turn this into a real fight. We are not concerned with his change in a chief trainer because Bradley always comes in top condition and is ready to fight. Joel Diaz did a good job with Bradley.”

CAMERON DUNKIN

“Brandon looks sensational – strong, in shape, ready to fight now – he’s a real fighter.”

TIM BRADLEY

“Rios can bring on the pressure all night long and we will deal with it. We are prepared for intense pressure. The only chance Rios has is a lucky punch and that’s not going to happen. Teddy Atlas brought in two sparring partners who have put pressure on me every single second for the last three weeks. Rios is living on a prayer and he knows it

“I don’t care what Rios is doing in his camp. I am only concerned about what I am going to do on fight night. I am absolutely, totally focused. I am not the same fighter I was before. When Teddy came to camp he challenged me, not what I could do physically but my mental aspect of fighting.

“When Teddy came to camp he took a book of images of certain rounds I had fought previously. There were notes about what I did right and what I did wrong. No trainer of mine has ever prepared for a fight like Teddy has for me against Rios.

“My game plan is to stay totally focused for 36 minutes of fighting. Rios fights hard, is relentless, can endure pain and look for one shot to hurt me. I want this fight badly. I plan to keep it in control my way. Teddy is full of wisdom. Together we are going to win this big fight.”

TEDDY ATLAS

“We looked at a lot of video of Rios to take a look at how he moves and his tendencies. We are not concerned about what is happening in the Rios camp because I’ve seen fighters have bad camps and fight well and have seen fighters who had great camps not perform on fight night.

“Tim did his job to prepare for Rios. He knows what it takes and what we have to do to win on November 7. Tim is ready to fight. We both know what needs to be done — total focus for 12 complete rounds — to win this fight.”

Promoted by Top Rank®, in association with the Wynn Las Vegas and Tecate, the Bradley vs. Rios world welterweight championship event will take place on Saturday, November 7, at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. It will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT.

Remaining tickets to the Bradley vs. Rios world welterweight championship event , priced at $400, $250, $150, $100 and $50, tickets may be purchased at the Thomas & Mack Center Box Office, online at http://www.unlvtickets.com/, at UNLVtickets Outlet Town Square Las Vegas and La Bonita Supermarkets. Antoine Douglas workout quotes

Antoine Douglas (18-0-1, 12 KOs) held a media workout at The Enigma Boxing on Tuesday as he prepares for his November 6 bout on SHOWTIME.

Douglas, a world-ranked rising middleweight prospect, will put his undefeated record on the line against veteran Les Sherrington (35-7, 20 KOs) in the main event of the prospect-oriented series ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday, Nov. 6, live on SHOWTIME (10 p.m. ET/PT) from the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center (DLVEC), across from the D Las Vegas in iconic Downtown Las Vegas.

ANTOINE DOUGLAS:
“I know my opponent is a tall southpaw. He likes to fight on the inside and smother his opponents with his punches. It’s a good matchup. I can adjust to any boxer face.

“I’m satisfied with the way that my career has progressed, taking steps up with each opponent along the way. We’re ready to take that next step, more toward a title shot.

“If all goes well with my fight against Les Sherrington I hope to start fighting on Saturday, make that move from ShoBox to SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING.

“I see myself fighting for a world title in the near future. There are plenty names in the division that I look at, but only a few guys that hold the titles. I look at Daniel Jacobs and Peter Quillin as guys that I would like to fight.

“The Jacobs vs. Quillin fight could go either way. I think I’m leaning more towards Quillin.

“I was born prematurely. Doctors told my family that I wouldn’t be able to walk or see, but look at me now. My mom is always screaming at my fights because she’s so proud of the fact that I’ve overcome so much.

“I grew up with my siblings bouncing around at different foster homes from the age of 5. I was running the streets because I didn’t know any better.

“My cousin adopted us and he first introduced us to boxing.

“Boxing provided me with a family, structure and disciple. It has made me the person I am today and has brought me success so I can live a better life in the future.

My upbringing in the streets prepared me for my career in the ring. I have already been through the battle and if something was to stop me it would’ve already happened.

“My mom battled addiction when I was younger and she wasn’t in my life. She’s now back in my life and it means a lot to me to have her supporting me with my career. I am also able to provide structure in her life.

“It would mean everything to me to have my mom and I celebrate a world title.”

GARY RUSSELL JR. & ANTOINE DOUGLAS MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES AS THEY PREPARE FOR SEPARATE BOUTS IN NOVEMBER ON SHOWTIME®

Gary Russell Jr
WASHINGTON, D.C. — (Oct. 28, 2015) – Beltway-area natives Gary Russell Jr. (26-1, 15 KOs) and Antoine Douglas (18-0-1, 12 KOs) held a media workout at The Enigma Boxing on Tuesday as they prepare for their separate bouts in November on SHOWTIME.

Russell Jr. will make the first defense of his WBC Featherweight World Championship against Colombia’s Oscar Escandón (24-2, 16 KOs) in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, Nov. 14, live on SHOWTIME (10:45 p.m. ET/PT) from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

ET/PT) from the D Las Vegas.

Here’s what Russell Jr., Douglas, Gary Russell Sr. (Gary’s father and trainer) and Gary Antonio Russell (Gary’s younger brother and undefeated boxing prospect) had to say on Tuesday:

GARY RUSSELL JR.:
“Training camp is going great, we’re right on course. There was a minor hiccup in the camp because I was supposed to fight on Oct. 24. I started sparring, but once the fight got pushed back to November 14 I cut the sparring off. I didn’t want to peak too early.

“Today (Tuesday) was my first day back sparring again. I’m working on my timing, ring generalship and lateral movement. We’re right on course.

“Oscar Escandon is strong and durable. He comes straight forward. If his corner was smart they would try to take away my hand speed which will be a big factor in the fight. He’ll need to close the distance, smother my punches so speed isn’t a factor.

“We are working on becoming just as comfortable fighting on the outside as I am fighting on the inside.

“A lot of fighters are one-dimensional. We are trying to make that diamond shine on all sides.

“I know that I will be victorious without a doubt. Anyone that you get in the ring with these small, 8-ounce gloves always has a possibility of creating an upset whether he’s a big puncher or not. It only takes one shot. It’s the fighters’ job to take away that opportunity.

“I’m excited to fight, period. I don’t even think about this fight being a title defense. It takes a certain type of mental toughness and psychological strength to get in the ring and perform. Anyone who gets in the ring against me is a champion in my eyes.

“It’s been about seven months since I fought. I’m always anxious to get back in the ring.

“If I get past Escandon I would love to fight Leo Santa Cruz, we fought in the amateurs. But we never underestimate any opponent and we are focused on getting this fight out of the way first. Lee Selby is another guy that we’re looking at. Of course Abner Mares, even though he lost, would be a great fight. These are the type of guys that we’d like to fight.

“Having my family with me during training camp means everything to me. It’s where I get my energy from. A lot of guys feel like they have to get away for training camp, but I don’t have to leave home. My family is the driving force behind my training camp and where I find my power and motivation. At the end of the day, I box for my family.

“If my brother ends up fighting on my undercard it would be very cool for me. It will be funny because if he does compete, you will definitely see me work his corner before my title fight.”

“My upbringing in the streets prepared me for my career in the ring.

GARY RUSSELL SR.:
“I know it’s a championship fight, but we go into every fight like it’s a title fight. We don’t know a ton about his opponent, we just train like champions.

“I have six sons, all of them are fighters. They all have different attributes as people that translate differently into who they are as people and in the ring.

“Antonio Russell is 4-0, he’s worked really hard all of his life. Outside of the gym, he can fix anything. Antoine, who just qualified for the Olympic trials, is brilliant. I’m very proud of him because he just graduated valedictorian of his class with the highest GPA of anyone in Prince George’s county. Then you have Gary, who is so hard working, he’s the future patriarch of the family, he has an old spirit.

“I’m proud of all of my kids and I’m proud that we’re a strong family unit. We learned a lot from Gary’s loss to Vasyl Lomachenko. We have a motto at the gym that hangs from a banner, it says ‘Success is the Ultimate Revenge’ and we’ve lived by that ever since the loss. We learned an important lesson from that fight and have moved on.

“Boxing is a fleeting thing, you don’t do it forever. We’re doing our own thing. I’m not worried about what other people have done.

“As a father, your paternal instinct kicks in because in this sport, anything can happen. You don’t want to see your son end up hurt. So we train for any circumstance. Because of that instinct, I’ve been strict and hard on my sons in order to keep them safe.”

GARY ANTONIO RUSSELL (Fighting on the Friday, Oct. 30 non-televised Premier Boxing Champions on Bounce TV undercard and potentially the November 14 undercard.):
“With the way we train and fight, our defense sets up our offense and our offense sets up our defense.

“My job is to go in there and win fights. I know my opponent is a tall guy, but I also know that he is not going to win. He doesn’t have the punching power or ring generalship that I have.

“Once I win, I’m on to the next. I’m trained to fight consistently. I hope I get this guy out early, if it comes and presents itself. Then I’d love to fight on my older brother’s card two weeks after.”

Guinness World Record- WBC world title on line at Brooklyn Brawl October 29th

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Oct. 28, 2015) – She is a dean at the Bernard Hopkins School of Pugilism.

Alicia Ashley, 48 years old, will attempt to win a world title, the WBC world female super bantamweight crown, on Thursday evening in Brooklyn, and if she is successful, she will be honored with another incredible addition to her resume. She will gain another entry into the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest female to win a world title, setting an even higher bar with her incredible longevity and durability.

The attempt will take place on another “Brooklyn Brawl” card promoted by Dmitriy Salita, and Ashley will be paired off with Christina McMahon, on a slate running at the Aviator complex in south Brooklyn.

Ashley sports a 22-10-1 (4 KOs) record, and shared some of what makes her tick, and continue to persevere past a point where even the sturdiest pugilists hang up the mitts.

“I feel I’ve had an illustrious career in boxing that sadly is not reflected monetarily,” Ashley said. “I’m a four time world champion and have been in the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest female boxing champion. I’ve fought all over the world and have garnered respect wherever and whenever I fight. For me, boxing is a performance and I always do my best to entertain.”

Salita said that he expects she will do just that. “We are honored to have such a superior athlete and role model topping this fine card,” he said. “Alicia is someone men, women and children can look up to, someone who has so many great qualities, as an athlete and a person.”

Ashley fights for love of craft, and works on her skills after putting in a days work. “My main job is a personal and boxing trainer at Gleason’s Gym,” she continued. “I live in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn with my husband Matthieu, who I met at the gym six years ago.”

And what she does she think of the lady who will try and take her down a peg Thursday night?

“Christina McMahon is an undefeated fighter who has gone in someone else’s back yard and won a title. She will be a formidable opponent who will come to fight and that is perfect for my slick style. I’m a long distance fighter and predict that I will come away with a unanimous decision win.”

Super Bantamweight contender Del Valle Returns November 14 in Puerto Rico!

Bayamon, PR (October 28, 2015) – Puerto Rican super bantamweight contender Luis “Orlandito” Del Valle will return to the ring in an eight round contest Saturday, November 14 at the Auditorio Municipal de Comerio in Comerio, Puerto Rico.

The card is presented by Miguel Cotto Promotions and Roc Nation Sports and will air Friday, November 20 via tape delay on Unimas.

An all-action brawler that gives fans their monies worth each and every time he enters the ring, Del Valle has an excellent 19-2 professional ledger with 14 of his victories coming by knockout. Del Valle, who made a name for himself on the global scene by fighting on HBO and Showtime, stopped Roberto Castaneda in eight rounds this past March. Currently in an intense training camp alongside undefeated contender Jayson Velez, Del Valle is excited for fight night and has his sights set on bigger opportunities in 2016.

“I’d like to thank Roc Nation and Miguel Cotto Promotions for giving me another opportunity to entertain the people of Puerto Rico,” said Del Valle. “Fighting at home inspires me and if everything goes as expected on the 14th, our plan is to take on somebody in the top 5-10. DODD: I’LL TAKE CARDLE’S BRITISH TITLE

Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd says he’ll rip the British Lightweight title from Scotty Cardle at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on November 7, live on Sky Sports.

Dodd landed the shot at Cardle’s title after a career-best win over Gary Buckland in September, and the Birkenhead fan-favourite says he can capitalise on his golden chance to fight for the Lord Lonsdale belt and end the Lytham St. Annes mans’ reign in his first defence.

“I am going to do this – I will be British champion on November 7,” said Dodd. “I’ve got some tricks up my sleeve for Scotty – everything is going well, I’ve had plenty of notice for this, let the bruising go down from the Buckland fight and trained like a mad man for this one. I usually have to work and train but for this one, it’s just been training, and I think that’s going to make a massive difference on the night.

“The reaction since winning the Buckland fight and then landing the Cardle fight has been overwhelming – I’ve tried to lock myself away from it all and concentrate on the training because this fight means everything to me – but I really want to thank the fans for all their support, it’s been amazing.

“It’s sad that Gary has retired, it was great to beat him but for him to retire afterwards was a shame, he is a great guy and had a fantastic career. Those fights with Gavin Rees probably took a lot out of him, so I probably owe Gavin a pint for that!”

Dodd challenges Cardle on a huge night of boxing in Liverpool as World-rated Merseyside Super-Middleweights Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding put their unbeaten records on the line with the vacant British title up for grabs.

Ricky Burns can take a huge step towards reclaiming his WBO World Lightweight title when he faces Josh King for the Inter-Continental Lightweight title, Prizefighter champion Tom Doran meets Rod Smith in an eliminator for the British Middleweight title and unbeaten Lightweight talent Ohara Davies faces Chris Truman.

Limited tickets are sale now from the Echo Arena website www.echoarena.com and on 0844 8000 400 – priced £40, £60, £80, £100 and £150.

Tickets for November 7 are available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/matchroom-boxing-tickets/ – StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.
