Kovalev to Return Very Early in 2016, Moscow Debut Postponed

Sergey Kovalev
Totowa, NJ: WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (28-0-1, 25 KOs) was scheduled to fight for the first time as a champion in Russia, his home country, in late November but the fight has been postponed due to scheduling conflicts. Kovalev will return to the ring very early in 2016. The date, opponent and location will be revealed shortly.

According to Sergey’s promoter, Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva, “The two fights would simply have been too close together. As we worked on Sergey’s schedule for next year, it became clear that the best course would be to schedule his first bout in 2016 as early in the year as possible. While Sergey is disappointed that the bout in Moscow must be postponed, he understands that the change in schedule is necessary at this time and he will return to Russia to fight in front of his fans there as soon as possible.”

Kovalev, a consensus top-five pound-for-pound boxer and 2014 Fighter of the Year, has been an extremely active champion since winning his first title in August of 2013. He has defended his titles six times, including defeating the legendary Bernard “The Alien” Hopkins in a unification bout in November of last year. “The Krusher” is looking ahead to a big 2016.

Degale vs. Bute Nov. 28 in Quebec City on Showtime Championship Boxing

lucian-bute
QUEBEC CITY, Canada (October 6, 2015) — Popular local favorite and former world champion Lucian Bute (32-2, 25 KOs), of Montreal, will try to recapture his world title belt against 2008 Olympic champion and reigning super middleweight world champion James DeGale (21-1, 14 KOs), of England, in the main event on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING live on SHOWTIME, Saturday, November 28, at the Vidéotron Centre of Quebec City.

This super boxing event, “The Reclamation,” is co-promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM and Interbox, sponsored by Vidéotron and Mise-O-Jeu.

“I am extremely happy to have this opportunity at this point of my career,” Bute said. “I lost my title in England against an English fighter and now, I will box in Quebec against another English boxer, for the same title I defended for five years. I am really motivated for this opportunity to regain the title I lost in 2012. The fact that the fight will take place in front of my fans in Quebec City, where I’ve never lost, will be the factor that will make the difference. I give all my respect to the champion, James DeGale, for accepting to travel for his first defense, but the IBF belt will stay in Quebec November 28!”

“Bute is a world class, elite-level fighter, who kept his world title for five years,” DeGale commented. “Anyone who can do that deserves some serious respect. I’m the champion and he will be very fired up trying to win back his old title, but I’m too young, too fast, and too skilful to let that happen. I’m lucky enough to have boxed in Canada only a few years ago, when I took on Sebastien Demers in Quebec in 2013. I met some great people out there. It is a lovely country and I can’t wait to go back. I beat Demers in a couple of rounds and I’d take the same result again. Whatever happens, however I win, I’m coming back with my belt.”

“For Lucian, this is THE defining fight of his career,” explained the President of InterBox and La Cage – Brasserie sportive, Jean Bédard. “This is a unique chance to regain his IBF super middleweight title. We are really happy to have concluded a deal for this fight against James DeGale. Once again, the Quebec boxing fans will be pleased with this first boxing card in the brand new Vidéotron Centre.”

“This event is possible thanks to the collaboration and help of major partners,” GYM president Yvon Michel added. “I would like to thank the Executive Vice President & General Manager, Sports and Event Programming of Showtime Network, M. Stephen Espinoza, Pierre Dion, President and CEO of Québecor, Benoît Robert, President and CEO of Groupe Sports et divertissement of Québecor, and the President of La Cage – Brasserie sportive, Jean Bédard, as well our partners, Vidéotron and Mise-O-Jeu.”

“November 28, Quebecers will have the privilege to assist, support and contribute for this important challenge for Bute – who defended his title for a record nine times – to regain his old title, which was never done before here,” Michel added. “The task will be hard because the champion is extremely skilled and is not afraid to defend his brand new belt in the former champion’s backyard. I would like to thank James DeGale for having accepted the invitation, but the whole GYM team is proud to promote this event and is rooting for Lucian Bute in his historic quest.”

“We are very proud to present a world championship fight between Lucian Bute and James DeGale for the first boxing card ever at Vidéotron Centre,” Dion remarked. “There is beautiful love story between Quebec City’s people and Lucian Bute, who won the four fights he has had in the old capital during his pro career.”

Lucian Bute, Quebec’s fan favorite
Bute is a boxer who has always been very popular in Quebecers’ hearts. After a solid amateur career, punctuated by a gold medal performance at the 2001 Francophone Games in Ottawa, plus participation in three World championships, Bute chose Quebec as his second home.

Starting as a sparring partner for then World Boxing Council (WBC) world super middleweight champion Eric Lucas, the southpaw showed the extent of his talent and charisma, in addition to learning a new language, French.

Extremely dedicated and disciplined, the native of Pechea, Romania quickly rose through the ranks of professional boxing, stopping many tough and experienced fighters.

A clear crowd favorite, Bute realized his dream of becoming world champion on October 19, 2007 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, knocking out Colombian Alejandro Berrio to win the IBF super middleweight belt.

With nine successive defenses of his world title, the 35-year-old gladiator still holds that record for a Canadian boxer. Bute also obtained his Canadian citizenship March 26, 2012.

After a win over Russian Denis Grachev at the end of 2012, the athlete who now lives in Laval moved up to the light heavyweight division for a super fight against local rival Jean Pascal. In front of a sellout crowd in Bell Centre on January 18, 2014, Bute lost a unanimous against the former lineal light heavyweight champion.

After an 18-month layoff, crowd favorite Bute returned in spectacular fashion, destroying European Union super middleweight champion Andrea Di Luisa by way of a fourth-round stoppage.

November 28, Bute will try to avenge his loss to Carl Froch against another Englishman and recapture his lost title.

DeGale from Olympic champion to pro champion
A native of London, DeGale became a British hero by winning a gold medal as a middleweight (165 pounds) at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

To do so, he bested Egyptian Mohamed Hikal (the last man to defeat Gennady Golovkin), American Shawn Estrada, Kazakh Bakhtiyar Artayev (2004 Olympic gold medalist 2004), Irishman Darren Sutherland and Cuban Emilio Correa Jr.
DeGale moved on to the pro ranks in 2009, winning his 10 first fights before losing a controversial decision to domestic rival George Groves in May 2011.

Obviously not shaken by his first loss, the switch-hitting DeGale returned to the win column five months later, beating the European and WBO Inter-Continental super middleweight champion, Piotr Wilczewskiof Poland.

Since that victory, DeGale won 10 bouts including one in Quebec, May 2013, at Lac-Leamy Casino in Gatineau, where he defeated Sébastien Demers by KO in the second round.

DeGale became IBF super middleweight champion in his last outing, May 23 in Boston, with a unanimous decision win over slick American Andre Dirrell.

DeGale is the only British fighter to have won an Olympic gold medal and a professional boxing title.

Alvarez and Beterbiev also in action
Also fighting on the card are light heavyweight world title challengers Eleider Alvarez and Artur Beterbiev. Both will fight in their respective 175-pound division elimination bouts. A press conference will take place in the next few weeks to provide additional details.

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

LUCIAN BUTE

“I am really happy to be back in Quebec City. Some of my best memories are here. I won four fights here. Six years ago, November 28, 2009, the same day I will fight James DeGale, I knocked out Librado Andrade. And I also defeated Glen Johnson in Quebec City. DeGale is a great champion, but to come here to face me in my hometown, in front of 15,000 people, it won’t be easy for him. I am the challenger, I am the underdog, and he is the champion, but the pressure is on him. I have lived this when I faced Carl Froch in England. My dream is to regain my world title. I always believe in me and in my tools to do so. The belt will remain in Quebec.”

JAMES DEGALE

“You should call me the road warrior! I am excited to face an elite fighter like Lucian, who was champion for five years. But the way I am training, nobody will beat me. You can see my character just by the fact I accepted to come here and take that fight. Be ready for a furious and spectacular fight.”

HOWARD GRANT (Bute’s head trainer)

“My job is simple: I have to prepare Lucian to win the title. British fighters were always dominant in the 160 pounds and 168 pounds divisions. DeGale is explosive, he won at the Olympic Games in 2008, and a World Championship in the United States…but that won’t work November 28th.”

JIM MCDONNELL (DeGale’s head trainer)

“James is different. He did everything on the rough path: being an Olympic champion, winning the British title at his ninth fight, and becoming World champion in the United States. The more pressure he has, the better he is. I never knew anybody like him before. He can’t be intimidated. James respects Bute, but they say when you win a title, you get better. It will be frightening.”

JEAN BÉDARD

“It’s going to be a fun night. I have two great defining moments in my 10 years in the boxing world. The first one was October 19, 2007, when Lucian became World champion live on TVA (Quebec TV channel) and November 28, 2009, in front of a jam pack crowd of 16,000 fans at the Québec Coliseum when Lucian beat Librado Andrade. Howard Grant (who was in Andrade’s corner) still remembers that I am sure! Now, six years later, we are ready for an historic date.”

YVON MICHEL

“No champion in Quebec’s boxing history ever regained a World title after losing it. The task will be hard, because DeGale is very skilled and brave. He won his title in the United State, far from his home. Still, we root for Lucian Bute at 100%. We have a 12 000 spectators configuration in the brand new Vidéotron Centre and we had already brought more people before for some of Lucian’s fight. We are convinced that Quebec’s boxing fans will also root for Lucian.”

Tickets are on sale at Vidéotron Centre box office, on www.ticketmaster.ca, at GYM (514) 383-0666, at InterBox (450) 645-1077 or at Champion boxing club (514) 376-0980.

Darleys Perez defends WBA Lightweight title against Anthony Crolla in a rematch on Saturday, November 21, LIVE on AWE

an Diego, CA – October,6 2015 – On Saturday afternoon, November 21, Darleys Perez will defend the WBA Lightweight title in a rematch against Anthony Crolla in a bout that can be seen live and exclusively in the United States on AWE- A Wealth of Entertainment

The bout will take place at the Manchester Arena in Manchester, England.

There’s a saying in boxing that if a title challenger ends the night with a draw, it means he beat the champ. For boxing fans of Anthony Crolla, the saying is more than true. Here’s the history on Crolla v. Perez I and why Crolla Perez II is a must watch rematch.

On July 18, 2015, boxing fan favorite Anthony Crolla made an emotional return into the ring to fight Darleys Perez for the WBA World title. Seven months prior, Crolla suffered a fractured skull, not in the ring, but at the hands of a burglar using a concrete slab as a weapon. Crolla risked his life to help a neighbor who was being burglarized.

Some thought Crolla was lucky to be alive, much less return to the ring to fight again. All leading to a very emotional evening in July as Crolla challenged Perez for the WBA World Title. Yet another devastating blow was coming. After twelve rounds of world-class boxing, Crolla finished the night with an extremely controversial draw. Boxing fans thought Crolla won the fight, before a two point deduction was taken against Perez for low blows. Crolla’s outraged home crowd fans were stunned and left the arena in silence. Amir Khan, the fast-handed UK fighter expected to fight Manny Pacquiao in early 2016, tweeted “What a joke!” characterizing the decision of Crolla fans worldwide.

Perez and Crolla will return to the scene of the first bout, in front of a raucous crowd at the Manchester Arena.

Perez of San Pedro de Uraba, Colombia has a record of 32-1-1 with 20 knockouts.

He won his first 28 bouts, which included wins over Samir Torres (10-2-1), Patricio Antonio Pedrero (20-1-1), Ramesis Gil (6-0-4), Oscar Meza (22-4) & Bahodir Mamadjonov (11-0).

He challenged then undefeated Yuriorkis Gamboa for the WBA Interim Lightweight title on June 8, 2013 in Montreal. Perez came up just short, but two bouts later he defeated Argenis Lopez (19-0) to win that same title on June 28, 2014 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The 32 year-old Perez made two defenses of the interim crown by defeating Jaider Parra (23-1-1) and Jonathan Maicelo (21-1) being being elevated to the WBA Lightweight champion.

Crolla of Machester, England has a record of 29-4-3 with 11 knockouts.

He turned professional on October 14, 2006 with a win over Abdul Rashid (1-0).

The 28 year-old has amassed wins over 4-time world title challenger Michael Brodie (36-3-1), Andy Morris (19-3), John Watson (13-1), Willie Limond (34-3), Syephen Jennings (5-1-1), Kieran Farrell (14-0), former Jr. Welterweight world champion Gavis Rees (37-2-1), Stephen Foster (31-4-1) & Former world title challenger John Murray (33-2)

The start time and a full undercard will be announced shortly.

DANNY O’CONNOR VS. GABRIEL BRACERO II, RYAN KIELCZWESKI VS. RAFAEL VAZQUEZ CONTINUES BOSTON VS. NYC RING RIVALRY

Bracero-Cruz_7013
LOWELL, Mass. (October 6, 2015) – The great Boston vs. New York City sports rivalry continues Saturday, October 10 in the ring on national television with northeast bragging rights on the line as Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBCSN comes to historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, Massachusetts.

The Boston home team sends out welterweight Danny “Bhoy” O’Connor (26-2, 10 KOs) and featherweight Ryan “The Polish Prince” Kielczweski (23-1, 7 KOs), respectively, against Brooklyn invaders Gabriel “Tito” Bracero (23-2, 4 KOs) and Rafael “Dynamite” Vazquez (16-1, 13 KOs).

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with Murphys Boxing, are on sale and priced at $125, $85, $50 and $35, not including applicable service charges and taxes. Special student, veteran and senior ticket prices also available. For tickets, visit www.lowellauditorium.com.

O’Connorwill be seeking revenge for 2011 loss to Braceroin the 10-round main event, while Kielczweski faces the toughest test of his career versus Vasquez in their 10-round bout to open the NBCSN broadcast at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

In the other scheduled televised fight, undefeated Dominican super bantamweight KO artist Jonathan “Salomon King” Guzman (19-0, 19 KOs), fighting out of nearby Lawrence (MA), takes on Connecticut’s upset-minded Danny Aquino (17-2, 10 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature.

Boston vs. New York is a classic matchup that has dominated sports headlines in the northeast for years as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox waged countless wars while the New England Patriots faced the New York Giants in two Super Bowls and continued their longtime rivalry with the New York Jets. The rich tradition of this rivalry has also spilled into the ring as many top fighters from each region have faced-off over the years.

The first significant Boston vs. NYC fight goes back to 1927 at Yankee Stadium, when Jack Dempsey stopped Jack “The Boston Gob” Sharkey in the seventh round of their heavyweight title eliminator to challenge world champion Gene Tunney. Controversy surrounded this fight as Sharkey, a sailor in the U.S. Navy, fought his boxing idol, Dempsey, who along with Babe Ruth ruled Manhattan during America’s Golden Age of Sports in the 1920s. Sharkey out-boxed Dempsey for six rounds until, complaining to the referee about Dempsey’s low punches, he was knocked out cold with a picture-perfect left hook.

Another legendary heavyweight champion from the Boston area, Rocky Marciano, wouldn’t have retired with his famous 49-0 record if one round or another were scored differently against Bronx favorite Roland LaStarza in 1950. Marciano took a questionable 10-round decision from LaStarza at Madison Square Garden. Three years later at the Polo Grounds, Marciano successfully defended his world title, knocking out LaStarza in the 11th round of their 1953 Fight of the Year.

A pair of Hall of Fame heavyweights from Brooklyn, Floyd Patterson and “Iron” Mike Tyson, respectively, knocked out Boston’s Tom McNeeley and his son, Peter McNeeley. McNeeley dropped Patterson once but he hit the deck 11 times before finally succumbing in the fourth round of their 1961 title fight in Toronto. His son, Peter, lost by first-round disqualification to Tyson who was fighting for the first since being released from prison.

A fireman from Boston with brittle hands, Paul Pender, twice defeated arguably the consensus Greatest of All-time, Harlem’s “Sugar” Ray Robinson, not once but twice by 15-round split decisions in 1960 world middleweight title fights at the Boston Garden.

“Marvelous” Marvin Hagler, a transplanted New Jersey fighter who lived in Marciano’s hometown of Brockton, Mass., felt ripped off when he was given a draw in his first world title fight against Brooklyn’s defending champion Vito Antuofermo in Las Vegas. Two years later in 1981, Hagler captured the coveted crown at the Boston Garden as Antuofermo retired after four rounds.

Even Lowell’s “Irish” Micky Ward had a New York City rival in Brooklyn’s Zab Judah, who he dropped a hard-fought 12-round decision to in 1998. For many years Judah said Ward was the toughest opponent he ever fought.

More recently, Irish Olympian Kevin McBride, fighting out of the Dorchester section of Boston, ended Tyson’s career in 2005 with a sixth-round TKO victory that left the boxing world in shock, and Boston heavyweight John Ruiz – the only Latino heavyweight champion of the world – won a 2008 fight in Mexico against Harlem’s Jameel McCline by 12-round decision in a world title eliminator.

On October 10, O’Connor, Bracero, Kielczweski and Vazquez will have their opportunity to not only represent their hometowns, but to etch themselves into the annals of the rivalry.

‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell brings big-time boxing back to Bristol on November 14

LONDON (6 OCTOBER) Middleweight star Nick ‘Bang Bang’ Blackwell will aim to make it three big knockout wins in a row on November 14, when he headlines a Hennessy Sports in association with Sanigar Events show at the City Academy, Bristol, LIVE on Channel 5.

The 24-year-old from Trowbridge is the reigning British middleweight champion and one of the standout British fighters of the year. His electrifying seventh-round stoppage win over John Ryder at London’s O2 Arena in May, televised live on Sky Sports Box Office, landed him the Lonsdale belt, while a stunning sixth-round knockout of Damon Jones in July, live on Channel 5, highlighted his devastating punch power and made-for-TV style.

Now, with world titles very much in his sights, Blackwell looks to make a statement on November 14 by completing a hat-trick of impressive wins against highly-rated middleweights.

“We’ve offered the fight to some well-known and world-ranked fighters, but nobody wants to go anywhere near Nick Blackwell right now,” said his promoter Mick Hennessy.

“I’m told Chris Eubank Jr. was offered the fight for a lot of money and, as has been the case in the past, turned it down,” said Blackwell.

“We’ve sparred each other before and he knows exactly what would happen if we met anytime soon. Yet, apparently he badly wants the British title.

“The problem for him, though, is if he wants to win the title and prove he’s the best in Britain, he has to go through me.

“With that in mind, I can understand why he’d want to swerve the oppportunity and seek out easier fights elsewhere.”

Also appearing on November 14 in Bristol will be heavyweight hotshot Hughie Lewis Fury, now unbeaten in 16 professional fights, as well as Tyson Fury’s younger brother, Young Fury, who looks to grab the sixth win of his fledgling pro career, and the explosive Yusuf Safa.

Local lads David Bailey, Duane Winters, Dan Sarkozi, Lee Nutland, Ashley Lane, Ryan Wheeler, Liam Hunt and Tim Cutler will also appear at the City Academy.

Verdejo to return October 31

Felix Verdejo
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, hot shot Lightweight prospect Felix Verdejo will return to the ring on October 31 in Orlando, Florida.

Verdejo had surgery on his left hand.

“Thanks to God my hand is feeling better each day that passes,” Verdejo told ESPN.com. “I know that on Oct. 31 it will be better than ever. I want to get back in the ring so I can keep bringing happiness to my people.”

The 22-year-old Verdejo (18-0, 13 KOs) will headline Top Rank’s UniMas-televised “Solo Boxeo Tecate” card in a scheduled 10-round fight against Josenilson Dos Santos (25-3, 15 KOs), 30, of Brazil, at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, Florida, an Orlando suburb, where Verdejo has a large Puerto Rican fan base.

“I’m very happy to return to the same place where fans have treated me so well before,” Verdejo said. “I want Florida to be one of the main [places] where I fight, along with Puerto Rico and New York. I want to give them all that love back with a big win on Oct. 31.”

Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti said Verdejo followed Shin’s rigorous rehabilitation program and was cleared to begin using the hand and pronounced ready to go for Oct. 31.

“He’s been in therapy for the hand since the operation in June,” Moretti said. “We’ve been sending updates to Dr. Shin, and Verdejo started hitting the bag last week. If he was able to get through it without pain, the doctor said he’d be OK to fight in October. We’re ecstatic that everything went according to Dr. Shin’s timetable and that he can fight in late October if he had no pain. He had no pain.”

“He realizes that in order to get back in the ring he had to go through this plethora of physical tests and demanding rehab, and to his credit he didn’t miss any scheduled appointments or treatments,” Moretti said. “It’s a reflection on him being such a professional, and now he can back in the ring and do what he does best.”

The 29-year-old has an excellent 23-3 professional ledger with 21 of his victories coming by knockout. Residing in St. Petersburg, FL, Kalajdzic emigrated from Bosnia in 1998. He’s a perfect 19-0 with 12 wins by knockout and outpointed well regarded Lionell Thompson last year in what was his biggest win to date. Prichard Colon_wins (1024x683)
FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA (October 5, 2015) – Rising star Prichard “Digget” Colon (16-0, 13 KOs) faces undefeated Terrel Williams (14-0, 12 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on NBC Saturday, October 17 from EagleBank Arena at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

The 10-round welterweight bout between Colon and Williams will replace the previously announced battle between Andre Dirrell and Blake Caparello after Dirrell had to withdraw for medical reasons.

The October 17 event is headlined local favorite and former world champion Lamont Peterson (33-3-1, 17 KOs) taking on 2008 Olympic Gold medalist from the Dominican Republic Felix Diaz Jr. (17-0, 8 KOs) with televised coverage beginning at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT. Peterson’s brother, Anthony Peterson (35-1, 23 KOs) will be featured in a 10-round super lightweight bout as part of the exciting lineup of undercard fights.

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment in association with HeadBangers Promotions, are priced at $250, $150, $85, $65 and $40, plus applicable service charges, and are on sale now. Tickets will be available through all Ticketmaster outlets including the EagleBank Arena box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com and via Phonecharge at 1-800-745-3000. Accessible seating is available for patrons with disabilities by calling 703-993-3035. Please visit www.eaglebankarena.com for more information.

Peterson, the younger brother of main event participant Lamont, is the owner of wins over Daniel Attah, Dominic Salcido and Marcos Leonardo Jimenez, the Washington, D.C. product is looking to win his six consecutive fight on October 17. Most recently he stopped Ramesis Gil in the sixth-round on July 11.

Adding to the local flavor is Virginia’s-own Jimmy Lange (38-6-2, 25 KOs), who will be fighting for the 17th time at EagleBank Arena, as he takes on Mike Sawyer (6-4, 4 KOs) in an eight-round light heavyweight bout, undefeated 28-year-old D.C.-product David “Day-Day” Grayton (12-0, 9 KOs) taking on 26-year-old Mexican Christopher Degollado (13-5, 11 KOs) in an eight-round welterweight affair and 22-year-old Demond Nicholson (14-1, 14 KOs) facing 28-year-old Colombian Milton Nunez (28-14-1, 25 KOs) in an eight-round super middleweight contest.

Rounding out the action is undefeated 30-year-old Brooklyn-native Lenox Allen (19-0-1, 12 KOs) against 25-year-old Hungarian Istvan Zeller (24-8, 7 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight bout, 20-year-old D.C.-native Kareem Martin (6-0-1, 3 KOs) in a six-round welterweight fight, 26-year-old Tommy Logan (3-1, 3 KOs) out of Winter Haven, Florida in a four-round lightweight affair and undefeated 23-year-old Alantez Fox (16-0-1, 6 KOs) of Forrestville, Maryland in an eight-round middleweight bout.

As an amateur, Colon was a five-time Puerto Rican national champion prior to turning pro in 2013. Trained by his father, Colon has been stylistically compared to fellow countryman Felix Trinidad, with all but one of his knockouts coming in five rounds or less. The 23-year-old scored a spectacular knockout over tough veteran Michael Finney in August and in September he knocked out former world champion Vivian Harris.

An undefeated fighter out of Los Angeles, Williams looks to make his mark when he faces Colon on October 17. The hard puncher has already picked up two victories in 2015 with a stoppage of Tavorus Teague and most recently, a decision over John Williams in August. Prior to the decision in his last bout, Williams had racked 12-straight victories within the distance.

THE ICEMAN KNOCKETH…OUT!

Viktor Postol
CARSON, CALIF. (October 5, 2015) — To the Viktor belong the spoils. The boxing world went Postol on Saturday night as VIKTOR “The Iceman” POSTOL (28-0, 12 KOs), from Kiev, Ukraine, put his stamp on the boxing landscape scoring a 10th-round knockout victory over former interim world champion Lucas “La Máquina” Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs), from Chubut, Argentina, to capture the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) super lightweight world title. Postol and Matthysse, world-rated No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, fought in front of a standing room only crowd of 7,025 fight fans at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. The fight was televised live as the main event of HBO Boxing After Dark®. Trained by Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach and promoted by Top Rank®, Postol, who has spent extensive time training with Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao, took charge of the fight at the outset and dominated Matthysse en route to a near-perfect display of boxing skill and raw power.

The fight will be replayed Tonight! at Midnight ET/PT on HBO2 and Tomorrow! at 11:15 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. The fight will be available on the HBO NOW and HBO GO platforms.

VIKTOR POSTOL, WBC super lightweight world champion

“I was a small boy, 12 years old, when I first went into a boxing gym. Even then my ultimate goal was to win a world championship. I later made a decision to leave the Ukraine and go to America which is the Mecca of Boxing. I went right to the Wild Card Gym. Freddie Roach became my trainer. This was our third fight. It was Freddie and his trainers who taught me the small things to work on and become stronger as a professional boxer. I am a world champion because of Freddie, the world’s best trainer. I mean that. At the Wild Card I did everything he told me to do each and every day. Now I am bringing home a WBC green world championship belt. The people of Ukraine will be so proud. I beat a very strong, powerful champion to win the title.”

FREDDIE ROACH, Hall of Fame Trainer

“Before the last round I told our corner that our opponent was very tired and ready to go out. He was coming in with his head leaning down. We told Viktor, ‘Now is the time for a right uppercut and a left hook.’ Viktor is a good student of the game. He followed the game plan perfectly. This was, really, one of the greatest wins of my career.”

BOB ARUM, Hall of Fame Promoter

“Viktor Postol will be a real force in the 140 and 147 pound divisions. He had a terrific fight tonight. He will be hard to beat. Top Rank will have some big very fights for him.”

Frozen machinery

By Bart Barry-
Postol KO Matthysse
Saturday at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., undefeated Ukrainian junior welterweight Viktor “The Iceman” Postol stopped favored Argentine Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse at the end of the 10th round of their vacant-title match on HBO. It was good to see a favorite lose a match in 2015, of course, but it was unfortunate to see it happen to Matthysse – who remains a fighter’s fighter even after quitting against Postol.

A few years back, an interesting correspondence with a remarkable Buenos Aires writer named Osvaldo Príncipi included this about Matthysse:

“In everyday life, he is a man who looks to go unnoticed. . . . He seeks anonymity and life in a small city. He’s recently divorced, and that bothers him. . . . He doesn’t like to speak with anyone he doesn’t know. . . . But he knows the bottom of every letter of the boxing trade.”

That correspondence happened, partially, because Matthysse wouldn’t speak to me for a 2,000-word Lucas Matthysse cover feature in the magazine his promoter owns. It was nothing personal, I gathered; Matthysse is obstinately unavailable.

Television is about myth making, and Lucas Matthysse is not. He is unamerican – in the provincial sense of United States as America; Matthysse is, after all, completely American – as anyone currently plying the craft of prizefighting. From Patagonia, a famously harsh climate of wind, temperature volatility, and wind, Matthysse is a professional athlete in a sense similar to the Brothers Klitschko: he understands the requirements of his craft and does not understand boxing as a metaphor for biological or biblical struggle; Matthysse’s profession is violence, yes, but he feels no more compelled to die in the ring than you feel compelled to die in a cubicle. Saturday, when Matthysse felt injured, ever different from feeling hurt, he quit his job the same way you might quit over an unreasonable business partner or thwarting boss. Rest assured he feels no remorse about it.

Could he have continued? Absolutely. He could have risen at the count of 2, if he so chose. He also could have rolled on his back, rubbed his eye a dozen times, risen and run out the clock till his corner stopped the match, or if he were Kermit Cintron, alternately catapulted himself out the ring or nagged-back at the officious Jack Reiss about an unseen headbutt. He did none of these things because, frankly, he is indifferent to your opinion of him. He is a fighter, not an entertainer, and however boxing regards him – it’s impossible, in this era of a thousand belts, to elect to the IBHOF a fighter who went 0-2 in world title fights – he has fulfilled his obligation to fans often enough that 7,000 Southern Californians showed up for his match with a Ukrainian spoiler known to very few.

Of course he was Ukrainian. He was on HBO, and it’s increasingly difficult to find a match on Comrade Hershman’s network that doesn’t feature a man from the former Soviet Bloc. Some of that is justified – especially if the Soviets keep winning – and most of it is Al Haymon, having overthrown the previous HBO regime in what history will call the Berto Putsch, signing every b-side stiff HBO might have otherwise paid Gary Shaw and Lou DiBella to deliver.

Viktor Postol is a gangly foreigner with a displeasing style who nevertheless won the right way Saturday, and that’s that. His style is awful enough that, were he from anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, he’d have been an essential component in the PBC’s Corpus Christi strategy months ago. Instead he wrestled a shopworn Argentine into something like submission.

A fighter like Matthysse can handle about anything in a boxing ring, so long as he’s allowed to enjoy the rejuvenating act of sinking his knuckles in another man’s flesh. Postol denied him that miller’s chance, and Matthysse wilted. Unable to find time or space where he expected it, or even might tolerate it, Matthysse became mentally fatigued – the mind nearly always quitting first in such confrontations. Rising off his stool to hunt a man he couldn’t find and was tired of stalking, Matthysse probably thought about not-getting a rematch with Danny Garcia, not-getting the benefit of scoring doubts against Zab Judah or Devon Alexander, and what logistics would would cook the carrots of a Manny Pacquiao match his promoter Oscar De La Hoya began to sell last week.

Postol’s trainer, Freddie Roach, certainly saw that. He told his charge Matthysse was ready to go, the Argentine’s exhaustion causing hopelessness causing sloppiness, spilling his chin over his front knee as short aggressors are wont to do against tall defenders; all Postol had to do was aim his punch where Matthysse’s head would drop and let Matthysse do the rest. And Matthysse did the rest.

There’s the pain of torn flesh or cramped muscles or wheezing breathlessness, and then there’s injury. Injury is a nonnegotiable signal sent to the central nervous system. One doesn’t make his living in athletics without knowing the difference.

Did Matthysse feel something injurious as the crackle of a snapping bone? No, likely not. Matthysse felt a pain that registered unfamiliar to a memory that comprises thousands of hours of combat, and that sensation, seasoned by a preceding quarter-hour’s hopelessness, brought Matthysse across surrender’s threshold.

Writing of which, Golden Boy Promotions, never adept at developing talent, recently signed Matthysse, a 33-year-old fighter, to a five-year contract of some sort, there’s almost no chance Matthysse will complete. The Argentine cannot beat Postol at 140 pounds, and the power he relies on will not travel seven pounds to welterweight. He may well win Fight of the Year for his April match with Ruslan Provodnikov – as there haven’t been five good main events in 2015 – an award entitling Matthysse to a gainful rematch, or there’s always the other roster members of the abattoir circuit – Brandon Rios, Mike Alvarado, Marcos Maidana, Josesito Lopez, Diego Chavez, increasingly Timothy Bradley – Matthysse could fight anytime in Carson, Calif.

The Machine’s days as an elite draw or pay-per-view potentiality, though, ended Saturday when Postol put an exclamation point on a sentence cowritten by Danny Garcia and Ruslan Provodnikov.

Postol stops Matthysse in 10

Viktor Postol
Viktor Postol captured the WBC Super Lightweight title with a 10th round stoppage over Lucas Matthysse at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Postol dominated the action with his length as he made it difficult for Matthysse to generate consistent offense. In round ten, Postol landed a short right to the chin that sent Matthysse to the canvas. Matthysse sat on one knee until the fight was stopped at 2:58 after referee Jack Reiss reached the 10-count.

Postol KO Matthysse

Postol, 139 1/2 lbs of Kiev, UKR is 28-0 with 12 knockouts. Matthysse, 139 1/2 lbs of Argentina is 37-4-1.
