Don’t tell Canelo he has nothing to lose

Saul Alvarez
There’s a theory that Canelo Alvarez has nothing to lose on Sept. 14 in his long-awaited showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. The reasons add up. Canelo is 23. He’s about to collect a career-high purse, expected to be between $10 and $13 million. He’s facing a 36-year-old fighter, whose tactical mastery has finally allowed him to prevail in the debate about who is at the top of the pound-for-pound’s mythical ratings. It’s no myth at all. It’s Mayweather and only Mayweather.

A loss for the young and still-unbeaten Canelo could become a valuable lesson in the ongoing education of a fighter who is beginning to look a lot like the pound-for-pound’s heir apparent.

What’s to lose, especially if a competitive performance from Canelo in a narrow defeat on the scorecards leads to a rich rematch?

Dumb question.

At least, it was when it was asked of Canelo during an international conference call.

“I think I have a lot to lose,’’ he said. “This is a fight that is very important to me. I have a whole lot to lose. I just don’t see it that way.’’

There’s pride in the answer. It’s an intangible. It’s just hard to know whether it gives Canelo more of a chance on his first night ever on boxing’s biggest stage and against a fighter who has ruled that stage like personal property. But it is evident that pride motivates Canelo as much as money moves Mayweather, who has been guaranteed a record-setting $41.5 million for the second bout in a Showtime deal worth a potential $250 million. Pride is there, in the tone of Canelo’s words. It’s also there, beneath all of that attention-grabbing red-hair, in stubborn eyes the color of combustible flint.

Be careful, and Mayweather has been. He seems to know that Canelo, although young, is dangerous. Whatever has passed for trash talk in the build-up for the biggest fight since Mayweather’s victory over Oscar De La Hoya in 2007 hasn’t exactly been outrageous.

If anything, Mayweather seems to have kept his rhetorical powder dry. His sharpest words seem to be more intended for De La Hoya, Canelo’s promoter. Mayweather, a promoter in his own right, has never liked De La Hoya. Don’t look for the two to start exchanging Christmas cards any time soon, if ever. Despite that, Mayweather seems to agree with De La Hoya about one thing: Canelo is just beginning to approach his potential.

“He hasn’t shown one bit of what’s he’s capable of,’’ De La Hoya said. “He hasn’t put it all together, because he hasn’t fought Floyd Mayweather, the best pound-for-pound fighter. Mayweather will bring the best out of him.’’

He might. Then again, Canelo’s pride might exert a pressure all its own and result in chances that Mayweather has always exploited with unerring efficiency. That might be the lesson. It also might be a lot to lose. But damaged pride has never needed stitches. It heals faster than a bloodied face. As an intangible, it is potentially powerful enough to give a Canelo a chance on Sept. 14. And if not then, maybe later in a rich rematch.

In the 10-round co-feature former two-division world champion Rafael Marquez, of Mexico City, returns to the ring to take on Efrain Esquivias, of Gardena, Calif., in a featherweight bout. All tickets bought for Sept. 6 will be honored on Sept. 7. Doors open at 4 p.m. PT and the first live fights start at 4:05 p.m.

Quotes from Thursday’s final workout:

CHRIS ARREOLA, Former World Title Challenger
“I’m going to make a statement and make sure that everyone remembers my fight. I’m going to embarrass this kid, Seth. That’s my job in there.

“I wish that today was the fight. I hate waiting. It’s time to do what I was bred to do; time to do what I was blessed to do.

“I’m more anxious than anything. I don’t get nervous, I get anxious. I’m ready to fight. I’m ready to showcase (my skills and talent).”

SETH MITCHELL, World-Ranked Contender

“I’m expecting a tough fight but I’m also expecting to be victorious.

“In the days leading up to the fight I think a lot about different aspects of the fight. I think about things that we’ve studied and we’ve noticed. I think about my technique and probably review the fight 10 or 12 times in my head before Saturday.

“I’m prepared for the fight. My opponent gives me funny looks but it doesn’t matter. It boils down to him and me on Saturday.

“He talks tough, and that’s expected from Chris Arreola. He’s a clown and a comedian but on Saturday the jokes are going to be on him.”

RAFAEL MARQUEZ, Former Two-Division World Champion

“The only thing that’s on my mind is my opponent. To be a champion and a known fighter all over the world, you have to work so hard. You have to do whatever your trainer says and everything I did will pay off.

“I give excellent fights. All my fights have drama and I’m just hoping to give my best for the fans in Indio and those watching on SHOWTIME. This is my first time fighting there.”

EFRAIN ESQUIVIAS, Featherweight Contender
“I’m focused. I keep going over the game plan. I’ve blocked everything out and I have surrounded myself with positive people. I’m really concentrating on the fight.

“I don’t think too much about my opponent. Marquez is a big name, but I’ve taken care business in the gym. I’ve trained hard so the fight should be easy. It’s not really going to be easy.” [laughing]

ANGEL OSUNA, Undercard Fighter Facing Juan Gonzalez

“I’m hoping to have a great fight because I’ve had a great training camp. I had the best sparring sessions of my career. I want a victory.

“I feel anxious, I just want to fight. I know the time is coming. I’m ready.”

RYAN CABALLERO, Undercard Fighter Facing Emanuel Machorro

“I’m ready to step into the ring. I’m confident. I know how much training I’ve done. I have to stay focused on that.

“It’s exciting that my family stands behind me and supports me in this sport 100 percent; they never pulled me away. My parents and my brothers will all be there Saturday, and knowing that makes me feels great.

“My older brother Randy always gives me pointers and I’ve learned a lot from watching him fight. I think I have a little bit of his style and my style mixed together in the ring.”

CANELO ALVAREZ MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Saul Alvarez
Kelly Swanson
Thanks for joining us today. Now that Labor Day has passed, I think there’s only one thing on everybody’s mind and that is “THE ONE: Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez,” taking place Saturday, September 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV. Today, we’re hosting a conference call with Canelo Alvarez himself and to make that introduction, I’m going to go ahead and turn it over to Oscar De La Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions.

Oscar De La Hoya
Thank you, Kelly. Yes, we’re getting very close, our nerves are getting a bit rattled and we feel “THE ONE” is going to break all records. All of the indications that we are receiving are showing us that “THE ONE” will be the one. We have a great card from top to bottom. It’s going to be very exciting all week. Fight fans can look forward to Thursday night fights on Fox Sports 2 with Shawn Porter against Julio Diaz kicking off the fight weekend, so these are exciting times for boxing all because our two participants [Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez] agreed to step inside the ring September 14.

It is my pleasure to be introducing “THE ONE” Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez who hails from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. He is the WBC and WBA and the Ring light middleweight champion and he’s been pro since the age of 15-years-old. He’s coming off a tremendous victory against Austin Trout in front of over 39,000 people. I’m sure no other fighter in the sport today can attract that many people inside one venue. So he is the most popular athlete in boxing today, loved by many and is only getting better. Let me introduce to you a fighter who hasn’t even shown his true potential and on September 14th we will be seeing the best in Saul Canelo Alvarez with a record of 42-0, 30 knockouts Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.

Canelo Alvarez
Hi, everybody. I feel very happy and ready for the fight. We’re only a couple weeks away. We’re very close to the fight day and I’m already in Las Vegas and ready for the fight.

Q
Why do you think that this specific fight seems to have taken off more than so many of the other perceived big fights that we’ve seen in recent years? Be it Oscar’s fights or other Floyd fights or Pacquiao fights, this fight for whatever reason, seems to have really caught on even more so than a lot of those other big ones we have seen.

Canelo
I believe it’s because of the fans, because of the people; they’re the ones that are very, very interested about this fight. It’s the fight that they wanted to see. It’s the fight that they asked for. It’s a fight that they wanted. There’s euphoria with the fans, with the people. I think that’s the reason.

Q
Why do you think that’s the case? We’ve seen lots of great match-ups. Why do you think that the fans are so-you used the word-euphoric? Why do you think that they are as euphoric about this fight than others that have been big ones?

Canelo
Because of that; they’re just excited about the fight. They wanted the fight. They know it’s going to be a great fight. They know that it’s going to be a fight where it’s not going to be easy for either of us, but it’s the fight that they asked for and it’s the fight they wanted. It’s going to be a very good fight, very interesting.

Q
Do you think that there’s a lot of people out there that a) did not believe that Floyd would actually come back and fight the second fight this year after the fight against Guerrero and so they took it as such a great surprise and were happy about it, and also because that even though he’s coming back for that second fight that they’re surprised that Floyd agreed to fight you because many people believe you do pose the greatest risk compared to the other opponents he could have selected?

Canelo
No, I believe it’s because of the fight. It’s the fight. You know it’s the fight itself. It doesn’t really matter that he’s fighting twice this year. You know he could have fought again in another fight like he did in May so that wouldn’t have mattered much, but I just think it’s because of the fight. It’s the fight; the fight that people wanted and they’re excited for.

Q
Oscar, you have more experience in big pay-per-view fights than just about anybody other than maybe Floyd Mayweather and maybe Mike Tyson. Could you talk about why you think this fight has caught on the way it has? I don’t know if it’s because there’s such a pent up demand because we haven’t had a kind of big fight like this for a while. We didn’t get Pacquiao/Mayweather. What do you think is the reason why this one has caught on so big?

De La Hoya
Well, I know why it’s caught on so big is because people have hope and people strongly feel that Mayweather is going to get beat. You know that’s why I feel this fight is catching fire. You have a young guy in Saul who is like a seasoned veteran. He knows what he’s doing. He’s a fighter that has a game plan that is in the best shape of his life. People have hope and people strongly feel that Mayweather is going to get beat.

Q
Do you feel that Floyd can hurt you at all if he connects?

Canelo
I think that any fighter at any given point can land and hurt anybody. You know that’s why you have to be ready and you have to look out for that. If you get caught by something solid by any fighter, I’m sure that you can get hurt.

Q
Is there anyone that you’ve fought in your career that you can compare to Floyd?

Canelo
You know I’ve fought with all types of fighters, all styles, but he’s different. Obviously, he’s Floyd Mayweather; he’s different. He’s a very, very smart fighter. He’s very smart that’s basically the difference. I’ve fought guys who are similar, but with Floyd he’s very, very smart so it’s different.

Q
You’re fighting at a catch weight of 152 pounds. Will that have any effect on the way you fight and do you have any concerns at all about making that weight?

Canelo
No, not at all; it’s not going to bother me at all. I feel good. I feel very, very good. I’ve been able to make the weight in the past without a problem. In fact, in my most recent fights I’ve been under on the day of the weigh-in. I really don’t do that much work so I think that it’s going to be fine. I feel very, very good right now, and, in fact, I think it’s going to help me. I’m going to be a lot faster.

Q
I’d just like to ask you, obviously Oscar spoke a lot about you being a younger, stronger, bigger guy. In your mind do you think your counter punching ability or your overall physical pressure will be your best asset?

Canelo
My counter punching is going to help, it’s going to be an important factor, but it’s going to be an all-around thing, not just counter punching. Obviously, pressure as well; pressure is going to help me in the fight but, you know, smart pressure; going in there not careless, but being very smart about it.

Q
Oscar has flat out said that he thinks that you, Canelo, are going to take advantage of the blueprint that he laid out against Floyd and that you are going to knock him out inside of eight rounds. My question is does his saying that add any pressure or expectation to your-you know to the fight for you and do you think he is correct in his assessment?

Canelo
No. It’s actually an honor. It’s an honor to hear those comments from Oscar that I’m going to win. Obviously, I’m preparing myself, you know, to win, and I have a certain game plan. I’m not going to look for the knockout. Obviously if it comes it comes. I’ve got my game plan; I’m going to stick to it and I don’t like to predict anything. The only thing I can predict is that I’m going to win the fight and that’s what I’m focused on and that’s what I’ve been working towards.

Q
And given that it’s a Mexican holiday and that you have an entire country behind you how does a young man like yourself avoid taking the weight and expectations of your nation and allowing that to wear on you, instead using that as motivation? How do you ride the waves of expectation and use that as motivation rather than feel it as pressure?

Canelo
Obviously, I’m very appreciative. I’m very thankful to God for this opportunity. I feel this is important-to my fans and my people. I’m a responsible person and this is all I’ve ever wanted and I’m very focused on what I want and what I want to happen, so, obviously, for me it’s a big responsibility. I understand that and I can appreciate that.

Q
Given that it’s been portrayed that there’s been sort of a revolving door of sparring partners has either Keandre Gibson or, as I understand it, Karl Dargan been helpful in emulating Mayweather’s style and durability?

Canelo
Yeah they’ve helped me very much, so I just have one more sparring partner left, and, obviously, they both did very good and they’ve helped me. They have very similar styles to Floyd and they helped me very much.

Q
Oscar, why do you feel that he can handle the kind of expectation that you, who have faced Floyd and not been able to knock him out, why do you feel he’s capable? What do you see that makes you feel he’s capable of handling the expectation that you have placed upon him and the country has placed upon this young man’s shoulders?

De La Hoya
Well, I can see it and I can envision that because I know what he’s capable of. I understand his potential and he hasn’t shown not one bit of what he’s capable of, and I strongly feel that September 14th we are going to see the younger Canelo Alvarez who is going to be fast, who is going to be strong, as we know, but who is going to be smart. He’s the whole package and he hasn’t put it all together because he hasn’t fought Floyd Mayweather, who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Floyd Mayweather will bring out the best in Canelo Alvarez.

Q
Saul, do your messages of support from ginger haired kids around the world, and do you see yourself as a sort of hero icon for ginger haired kids?

Canelo
I can’t say that I’m a hero for them. I mean that’s a question you would have to ask them. I can’t really answer that, but yes I’m very appreciative that I have followers and fans from all sorts of colors.

Q
Also, the last undefeated fighter to face Floyd was British fighter Ricky Hatton. I wondered if you had watched that fight in your preparation and was wondering what you thought about that fight.

Canelo
Yeah, you know, I’ve studied the fight and I’ve seen what he did and he kept coming in. He kept coming in and pressuring Floyd and throwing a lot of punches, but I felt that he kept coming in a little too open and he was getting caught with many punches coming in, especially the right hand, and obviously, finally with the left hook that caught him and got him out of there. But I think that he made mistakes; he made mistakes by coming in wide open.

Q
Saul, do you consider yourself the number one fighter in Mexico right now?

Canelo
I think that’s a question that I can’t answer. It’s a question you’ve got to ask the fans; you’ve got to ask the media. I can’t really answer that but what I can say is that I’m just doing the best job that I can do.

Q
Saul, you’re a fighter with many qualities; what’s one of the qualities that’s most important that Floyd has to be careful with?

Canelo
I think that when you get up in the ring there’s not one specific thing you’ve got to look out for. You’ve got to be ready for everything because one punch is all it takes to lose the fight, so you’ve got to be ready for everything.

Q
Have you given much thought how you’re going to win the fight? What’s going to be the outcome? How are you going to win the fight? Can you tell us?

Canelo
You know it doesn’t really matter. I think any way to win the fight, any punch that might stop the fight is going to be good. I can’t really say too much. I can’t really predict it. I mean the most important thing is to go with my game plan and try to win the fight and see what happens.

Q
In the ‘All Access’ show you were watching the Abner Mares fight. Obviously, that fight ended with one punch. Like you said, anything can happen at any given time in any fight. Can this happen in the Floyd fight? Can it happen with you? Obviously, Floyd’s a favorite just like Abner Mares was but can this happen the same way?

Canelo
I’m working hard. I’m working hard for this fight. Obviously, one punch, yes one punch can change everything, but I’m working hard, and I’m doing my game plan for this fight, and anything can happen. You really don’t know.

Q
Do you think that you can change the history of boxing or, you know, the history of what’s going on right now if you win this fight? Right now you’re not considered one of the pound-for-pound fighters. Do you think it can very easily put you on the list for pound-for-pound best in the world? Do you think that you can, obviously, make a statement with this win?

Canelo
Of course that’s why I’m very motivated; of course I could. It would be a great win. If I win this-on September 14th when I win it it’s going to be a great win so of course it can change history.

Q
Do you think Mayweather is underestimating you by saying that he’s fought better opponents than you?

Canelo
Yes. I think that the way he’s talking he’s underestimating me, but at the same time I think that he’s worried. I think that he’s very, very worried, but he’s always been like that. He’s always been a talker and that’s the kind of person he is, but I don’t care. I don’t care what he’s saying. I don’t care what he’s thinking. What I care about is what I’m saying and what I’m thinking and I’m controlling it and that’s what matters to me.

Q
On the All Access you were talking about sparring partners. Some of them were trying to emulate Floyd in using their elbows and using their forearms on you. Do you think that’s a style that Floyd does and he uses that on purpose and maybe he gets away with a lot of that?

Canelo
I’m not saying that he’s a dirty fighter. I would never say that because he’s not. He’s not a dirty fighter but he’s a fighter that has a lot of experience and obviously yes sometimes he does use his elbows and forearms but it’s a tactic so that he can get you off your game plan; then he can counter you when you’re trying to pull out of that. Obviously, he’s a fighter that has a lot of experience and he uses that to his advantage.

Q
Saul, you’re ten days from the fight. How are you feeling? How are you mentally?

Canelo
I feel very good. I feel very, very well physically and mentally. It’s the best preparation I’ve ever had for any fight and with these days coming I feel very good.

Q
Are you worried with the fact that obviously the big magnitude of this fight and there’s talk that there’s going to be over 100 countries watching this fight, so many people watching it? Does it worry you or does that motivate you and that’s just another move in the right direction for your career?

Canelo
No I’m not worried. In my career I’ve always focused very, very well. I’ve been in some tough fights and that’s all I can worry about is the fight. Obviously, you always want to fight the best and at this moment right now Floyd is considered the best and that’s what I’m focused on. I’m focused on becoming the best and how you become the best is you beat the best.

Q
Julio Cesar Chavez, Sr. said that it was a big disadvantage to go to Vegas so early and that maybe you might lose some of the conditioning that you gained up in Big Bear by doing the move so early. What do you think about that?

Canelo
Everybody thinks differently. They have their own opinion but, obviously, this is something I’ve done in the past and you also have to get acclimated to the weather in Las Vegas. It’s very hot out here and you’ve got to get used to and acclimated to the weather so, obviously, that’s the reason why I did it.

Q
Floyd Mayweather made some comments that this is not going to be the toughest fight of his career; that the toughest fight of his career was against Miguel Cotto. What do you think about that?

Canelo
That’s good that he’s thinking that way. The day that he gets up in the ring with me he’ll see for himself whether it’s a tough fight or not.

Q
Obviously there’s been a lot of talk about the style that Mayweather has, but what I want to know is how are you preparing mentally for this fight?

Canelo
I’ve prepared myself very, very well. I’m a fighter that’s always been very strong mentally, very cold in my thoughts so I’m very, very good. I’ve been preparing myself physically and mentally so I’m feeling good.

Q
You know if Mayweather is going to start the initiative and start the fight and try to pressure you, are you going to allow that to happen or you going to turn it around and turn the tables on him?

Canelo
No, not at all. I’m going to go up there and I’m going to follow my game plan and I’m going to make my fight. I’m not going to allow him to fight his fight. I’m going to fight my fight and I have a game plan.

Q
Is there someone you want to dedicate this fight to against Floyd?

Canelo
Obviously, yes to all my supporters, my family and all my teammates that are around me.

Q
Hi, Canelo. I am struck by how humble and even-keeled you are. Floyd is known for stirring up the pot. He’s not shy about telling people how great he is and what he’s going to do to you. I am wondering, can you point to one instance on that long multi-city press tour when Floyd ever got under your skin and maybe pissed you off and got you angry? You’re so even-keeled it’s amazing to hear.

Canelo
No not at all; he never gotten under my skin. There’s nothing he did that really got under my skin. I’ve always been very, very strong mentally. So I like to be very, very strong and, obviously, prove everything up in the ring, so, no, he never got under my skin.

Q
Do you think Mayweather has enough power to knock you out?

Canelo
I think that any fighter has the ability to hurt anybody. If they catch you with the perfect punch they can hurt anybody even if it’s a fighter that they say doesn’t have any power or any strength. If it’s the right punch it can hurt anybody so that’s why you always have to be ready. You have to be up there and you have to be ready.

Q
Many people are saying you’re only 23-years-old and you’re going to be in many other big fights that you have nothing to lose. Do you think that’s the case?

Canelo
No, not at all. I think that I have a lot to lose. This is a fight that’s super important to me so I have a lot to lose. I don’t see it that way.

Q
Hello. Oscar, as a promoter-well, everybody is looking forward to a great fight of course, first of all, September 14th-as a promoter do you see the possibility of boxing’s next great trilogy taking shape? If Canelo wins and there’s a rematch, then there could be another rematch, do you see that happening?

De La Hoya
Well, Canelo winning there is a rematch unless Floyd retires, but that’s not likely to happen. I believe both guys are competitors, both guys want to be against the best, and Canelo winning-for sure we know we will see a great fight-I strongly feel that both guys will want to fight again.

Q
Oscar, you said that you feel that Canelo will get the knockout. Floyd, as you know, is one of the-people are saying he’s possibly the best defensive fighter of the last 50 years, things like that. How do you see Canelo getting a knockout? Do you think he’ll wear him down and stop him late or do you think he’ll just shock him early with his sheer physical strength and power?

De La Hoya
Well, yes; I mean that’s my personal position, my personal feeling. That’s how I feel that the fight will pan out. You know in boxing anything can happen. In boxing any punch can land and knock you out so my feeling is that a fighter like Canelo Alvarez has what it takes to land that perfect punch.

Q
Oscar, I have a question for you regarding this fight. Obviously, Canelo has already said he was going to have no problem making the 152 pound weight, but is there a stipulation if he does come in overweight similar to when Floyd fought Juan Manuel Marquez? He was penalized a monetary amount.

De La Hoya
Well, yeah there is a penalty but, obviously, Canelo is going to have no problem making the weight whatsoever. He made 153 against Austin Trout with no problem, so Canelo is going to have no problem whatsoever.

Q
Okay. And then my other question is from media day, Mayweather told me that he felt that Juan Manuel Marquez has a bigger following than Canelo does, so my question is for Canelo, does he believe that he’s a bigger draw in Mexico now than Marquez was or ever will be?

Canelo
I don’t like to give my opinion on those types of thing. I don’t. I don’t like to talk about that stuff. I know that he knows. I know that he knows the truth so that’s all I can say.

Q
Oscar, would a Canelo win in your opinion where would that rank in terms of Mexican boxing as far as the biggest wins to happen for a Mexican fighter?

De La Hoya
Well, it would definitely rank up top two or three. Mexico has produced a lot of great champions, a lot of great fights, but this fight here in particular, especially in the last 15 years, will be one of the most important victories for all of Mexico.

Q
Canelo, I want to know where do you think that this fight would fall in the pantheon of the great Mexican victories if you win this fight, and what, going in to this fight, do you view as those great victories for Mexican fighters?

Canelo
It would be one of the biggest for the history of Mexico. Salvador Sanchez was a great victory.

Q
You think that Salvador Sanchez and Gomez is the biggest one presently?

Canelo
It’s one of the biggest ones as well.

Q
And is that a fight that you have watched? You’re too young to have seen it live obviously, but did you watch the video of that? What are your memories of the great Mexican victories that you look at as those big ones besides that one?

Canelo
Yes I’ve watched that fight on tape, but you know a good Chavez vs. Taylor or Chavez vs. Camacho was one that got a lot of publicity in Mexico as well.

Q
Do you think a victory here would perhaps surpass any of those?

Canelo
Well, we have to wait and see and let the people decide for that.

Q
Canelo, could you tell us what advantages you believe you have over Mayweather and why you are so confident that you’re going to be the first person to defeat him in the ring?

Canelo
I just feel very confident that I’m going to win. I’m going to have my game plan and I’m going to go in to the fight very, very smart. I can’t really say that I have that many advantages, but I have a very, very good game plan and I’m going to go in there very smart and I know I’m going to win the fight.

Q
Do you think that Mayweather has declined as a fighter in the last few years as he’s gotten older in either speed or power?

Canelo
No, not at all. He’s a fighter that maintains himself very well. He takes care of himself and I still think that he’s at his peak. So, no, not at all. I don’t think that he’s lost anything. I think that he’s still there. He’s still Mayweather.

De La Hoya
All right, this concludes the call. Thank you very much, everybody and we will see you during fight week.

Mayweather to earn $41.5 Million for Alvarez bout

floyd-mayweather1
Pound for Pound king Floyd Mayweather will earn a record $41.5 million for his September 14th bout with Canelo Alvarez according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“Floyd is the biggest star in the sport and the best in the sport, and when you’re the biggest star and you are the best, you get paid the most money,” saidMayweather’s adviser Leonatd Ellerbe told ESPN.com. “So this comes along with the territory.”

“It’s a wonderful thing,” Ellerbe said. “Floyd has put boxing on his back and crossed over. He took a niche sport and went out there and marketed a persona [‘Money’ Mayweather] in the mainstream world and became the highest-paid athlete in sports.

“It’s [truly a] blessing to be in that position to make that kind of money. Floyd has worked hard to put himself in this position. He deserves every penny of it. He’s the only athlete that has dominated his sport for the last 15 years, and now he is fighting the best guy he can possibly fight.”

“Showtime/CBS made it known they wanted to be in that Mayweather business,” Ellerbe said. “These are the things we talked about with Showtime/CBS when he made this deal, and they have really stepped up to make this possible. When we signed this deal and told people we had the biggest deal in sports history, some people said, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah.’ But we were not kidding.”

SETH MITCHELL & CHRIS ARREOLA DISCUSS “MUST-WIN” HEAVYWEIGHT SHOWDOWN THIS SATURDAY, SEPT. 7 FROM FANTASY SPRING RESORT CASINO IN INDIO, CALIF. LIVE ON SHOWTIME®

Seth_Mitchell
NEW YORK (Sept. 3, 2013) – Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola calls it a “must-win” and may retire if he loses. Seth “Mayhem” Mitchell calls it “do-or-die” and a “crossroads fight for both of us.”
This Saturday, Sept. 7, former world title challenger Arreola (35-3, 30 KO’s), of Riverside, Calif., meets former college football star Mitchell (26-1-1, 19 KO’s), of Brandywine, Md., in a 12-rounder for the WBC Silver Championship in a battle of world-ranked heavyweights on SHOWTIME BOXING: Special Edition live on SHOWTIME® immediately following ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. Canelo Episode 3 Premiere which begins at 10 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast

A gallant Mexican warrior who’ll forever be remembered for his classic four-fight series with Israel Vazquez on SHOWTIME, the respected former two division world champion Rafael Marquez (41-8, 37 KO’s), of Mexico City, will take on Efrain Esquivias (16-2-1, 9 KO’s), of Gardena, Calif., in the 10-round co-feature from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, Calif.

Tickets for an event originally scheduled for Sept. 6 are priced at $105, $75, $55, $45 and $35 and are available at the Fantasy Springs Box Office, by calling (800) 827-2946 or online at www.fantasyspringsresort.com. All tickets bought for Sept. 6 will be honored on Sept. 7. Doors open at 4 p.m. PT and the first live fight starts at 4:05 p.m.

The 6-foot-2½-inch, 31-year-old Mitchell is coming off a 12-round unanimous decision over Johnathon Banks last June 22 on SHOWTIME. Getting his revenge against the only fighter who defeated him, Mitchell dropped Banks in the second round, bounced back after getting staggered a couple of times and then thoroughly outworked Banks in the later rounds to win by the scores of 117-109, 115-112 and 114-112.

“Banks hurt me in the third round, but I recovered and felt confident that I won. I thought I easily won eight of the 12 rounds. I was ready to go 12 and with my stamina, I could’ve gone 15 or 20,” said Mitchell.

It was the first time Mitchell, who’s ranked No. 2 in the WBC, No. 4 in the WBA, No. 8 in the WBO and No. 10 in the IBF, went 12 rounds.

Looking ahead, Mitchell, who trains in Clinton, Md., said, “This is going to be a hell of a fight. Arreola applies pressure and has a heavy punch. He’s definitely the toughest opponent I’ve faced. But I’m ready, focused and excited. It’s going to be electric and I’m just looking forward to me coming out victorious again. On Sept. 7, Arreola is going to have to back up all of the trash he’s been talking.’’

Offered Mitchell’s trainer, Andre Hunter, “Training camp went well. Seth is in fighting shape so we’ve been working on other things besides just conditioning. I have nothing but good things to say about Arreola. He’s a good boxer, he comes forward and he throws lots of punches. He puts a tremendous amount of pressure on his opponents and overwhelms them with his abilities. With that being said, Seth can win. We have a great game plan for this fight and are looking forward to returning to SHOWTIME.”

The 6-foot-3 ½-inch 32-year-old Arreola spent the last six weeks training in Phoenix. The purpose of relocating (along with trainer Henry Ramirez) was to guarantee that Arreola, notorious for playing hooky from the gym, would not miss a day of gym time. Arreola had a six-fight winning streak end in his last start when his nose was broken during a 12-round decision loss to Bermane Stiverne on April 26.

“This is a must-win fight,’’ said the WBC No. 3- and WBO No. 9-ranked Arreola, who challenged Vitali Klitschko for the world heavyweight title in 2009. “I respect his conditioning and his determination to be somebody. Mitchell was a good football player, but I’ve been in this game too long to lose to somebody like that. If I lose to some guy like Seth Mitchell I would seriously contemplate retirement. I’m not a gatekeeper and I never want be that guy you beat so my name looks good on your resume. I’m not that kind of a fighter. I’m a world-class athlete, a world-class boxer.
“It took me until I was 32 but I’ve finally grown up a little. For once, I’m doing what it takes to give myself the best chance to win. I’ve always been my own worst enemy, but this time it’s not like that. I’ve got to make sure I walk the walk, and that everything I say I’m going to do happens.
“I’ve always been my own biggest problem, my own worst enemy. I can’t blame anybody else. I work my butt off once I’m in the gym, but getting to the gym wasn’t always automatic. I’d always come up with excuses for not going. Out in Phoenix, we only had one car, and Henry did all the driving. He also had the only key. So relocating paid off. I put in the time. I did my training camp the way I’ve always supposed to be doing it. All I did was concentrate on boxing.’’
According to Ramirez, “Chris can’t train at home, simple as that. His preparation before the last fight was no-where near what a professional fighter at that level should have – no-where near. Mitchell is a good fighter. I don’t necessarily feel he’s at that top, upper-echelon level that some are putting him at but he’s still a dangerous opponent. He’s coming off a victory over a guy that knocked him out. So, mentally, he’s overcome a hurdle — he beat the guy that knocked him out.
“I would expect him to be fully confident and to be the best Seth Mitchell that there is. What that is, I really don’t know. But I know it’s not enough to beat Chris. It’s been a different Chris for this camp. I knew everything he was doing. We went to the gym together. He didn’t have access to a car. There weren’t any missed days. Chris showed up for workouts twice every day. Mitchell is not going to benefit from an unprepared Chris Arreola, I can guarantee that.”
More on their upcoming fight and their past camps from Mitchell and Arreola below:

SETH MITCHELL

(On the fight)

“I look at this as a crossroads fight for both of us. He’s coming off of a loss, and I just avenged my loss to Banks. This fight would have had more steam if he hadn’t lost to Stiverne and I hadn’t lost to Banks, but this is a fight I’ve been talking about. I think our styles complement each other and mesh well. It’s going to be a great fight.

“He’s a hell of a fighter and I’m a hell of a fighter. The only thing I give him the advantage of is experience. I don’t concede anything else. As far as speed, power or boxing IQ, I’m just as good or better than him. He does have more experience, but I know that I’m learning each and every fight.

“It’s a do-or-die fight. I don’t mean that if you lose this fight, your career is over. But it is a huge, huge setback. I’ve gotten tremendously better over the last 15 months and I just want to show that. This sport is so unforgiving you have to be a quick learner. If I want to stay where I’m at, I have to continue to learn and continue to win. I had to win the second Banks fight to show I’ve improved from fight to fight.

“It’s just going to be me and him in that ring and no one else. Arreola has power, he comes forward and he can box. [Yet] every time he’s stepped up in competition, he has lost. It should be an exciting fight for as long as it lasts. This is a big fight for me and I’m excited to be back on SHOWTIME. I’m looking forward to seeing all my supporters in California.

“When the stakes are this high, it’s a high-risk, high-reward situation. Some people look at this as a cash-out fight for me. I look at it as a cash-in fight.

“I know Arreola is coming and when you fight him, you’ve got to be in shape. This fight I expect will be totally different [then the one with Banks]. Chris is going to bring it. He’s a come-forward fighter who throws a lot of punches. I’m not expecting him to sit out there and try to outbox me.

“I don’t feel comfortable talking about my strategy. I ‘m just going to be very prepared. My trainer and I have put together several game plans in case he comes in with something different than we’ve seen before. After the first couple of rounds, we’ll figure out which game plan is going to work best.’’

(Training Camp)

“I’ve worked extremely hard, I’m already in fight shape and I feel great. I’ll be mentally and physically prepared to fight Arreola on Sept. 7.

“I take this sport very seriously. I treat my body very well. I train hard and I’m always in shape. [Going into the Banks rematch] it was always a question whether I could go 12 rounds, because I never went the distance. But as far as getting tired, that was the last thing on my mind in that fight. The way it was fought, I could have fought 20 rounds like that.

“The way I spar and train, even when I hit the mitts, we’re well over 100 punches per round. Towards the latter part of my training camp, I spar 12-14 rounds against two or three sparring partners that are coming in fresh. Conditioning is not going to be an issue with me.

“I got back in the gym two weeks after my last fight. We just worked on me getting better as a fighter, working on my defense and things of that nature. It’s the same preparation, just a different opponent.

“We’re just focused on Arreola. I’m expecting the best Arreola, and we’ll see what happens from there.’’

CHRIS ARREOLA

(Training Camp)
“It was totally my idea to relocate and go to Phoenix. We’ve trained in Las Vegas, Houston, Big Bear, places like that. But they were not quite far enough away. For this camp I wanted to be far away, but close enough. When I’m in Riverside, I find reasons not to train. In Phoenix, I didn’t have the opportunity to go out.
“I was in Phoenix for six weeks. It was disgustingly hot and muggy. It was like a sweatbox, but it made me work and I like it that way. Training in Phoenix kept me under the radar; not many people knew I was there. I was at the gym twice a day. I did my boxing in the morning, my cardio in the evening. All I did was box. I feel amazing and I trained and sparred with guys who worked my butt off.
“I always schedule two training sessions a day before a fight. The thing about this one, I had to go with Henry every time. I actually do work if I’m in the gym. The problem has never been my work ethic. My problem was getting to the gym.’’
(On the fight)
“If there is one word that describes me for this fight that word is ‘motivated.’ I’m motivated, much more than in the past. I’m motivated to beat this guy, to put him on his butt and in his place. There’s no way this man should beat me.
“The main thing is, I cannot give Mitchell any opportunity to win this fight at all. It’s all on me and that’s why I’ve put in the time.
“People say he can’t take a punch. Well, I can’t rely only on hitting him on the chin. I have to make sure and throw combinations and move my head. This is the heavyweight division. Sometimes, one punch can change everything but other times one punch is not good enough.
“My nose hasn’t given me any problems, and it is fine. I‘ve got such a big nose. I broke it in four different places. He hit me with that right hand and just shattered it. I had surgery on May 10 and was able to start running again six weeks after that.’’

WILL CANELO ALVAREZ BE “THE ONE” TO FINALLY DEFEAT FLOYD MAYWEATHER?

Saul Alvarez
LAS VEGAS (September 3, 2013) – If Canelo Alvarez is awestruck by the prospect of trying to do something that no one else has done – defeat pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather – he doesn’t show it.

Canelo maintained the same cool, calm expression throughout a nine-city press tour to promote “THE ONE: Mayweather vs. Canelo” – the highly anticipated, super welterweight world championship pay-per-view showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, Sept. 14. It was the look of a man who is never hurried and never worried. All business.

Is Canelo “THE ONE?”

Can he succeed where so many other superb boxers have failed? Can he not only be the first fighter to defeat Mayweather, but also the first of Mexican descent? Mayweather’s Mexican foes include such notables as Jose Luis Castillo, Juan Manuel Marquez, Jesus Chavez, Genaro Hernandez and Oscar De La Hoya.

De La Hoya thinks so. De La Hoya lost a split 12-round decision to Mayweather in a record-setting pay-per-view event in 2007. One judge scored it as a victory for De La Hoya. That is as close as anyone has come to dethroning Mayweather in the last decade.

“For one thing, youth is on his side,” De La Hoya said of the 23-year-old Canelo, who hails from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. “But the real advantage will be the intelligence. People will also be surprised with his speed.”

Canelo, a redhead with matinee idol looks, is the No. 1 boxing attraction in Mexico. He is on the cusp of joining the same club as Mexican boxing legends like Carlos Zarate, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. A victory over Mayweather would cement his legacy as one of the all-time greats in Mexican boxing history.

Canelo said he started watching Mayweather in his fights with Jose Luis Castillo and Diego Corrales in 2001 and 2002. He really took notice when Mayweather fought De La Hoya in 2007.

Who was he rooting for in that match?

“Oscar, of course,” he said with a laugh.

Canelo now has De La Hoya as his mentor. He said he will lean on De La Hoya to get information on what makes Mayweather uncomfortable in the ring. De La Hoya, who had a good strategy against Mayweather, said he will keep repeating three letters to Canelo – J-A-B. It was something De La Hoya couldn’t do consistently because he had a torn left rotator cuff in their fight in 2007.

Canelo won’t be coming in with any such aliments, and if he follows De La Hoya’s advice, he could turn the tables on Mayweather. Plus, Canelo doesn’t believe that he’s too inexperienced for Mayweather at this time.

“I’m very young, but I’m experienced as well,” said Canelo, who has fought in 43 fights (42-0-1 with 30 KO’s). “I’ve been learning the last couple of years. The position that I’m in right now, Mayweather was once in [when Mayweather was learning and growing as a fighter].”

Mayweather has conquered every boxer of Mexican heritage that has been put in front of him. Jesus Chavez, who was 29 at the time that Mayweather upended him for the WBC junior lightweight title, and Castillo, who was 28 when Mayweather twice defeated him for the WBC lightweight title.

Mayweather also defeated Genaro Hernandez for the WBC junior lightweight title; Hernandez retired from boxing after the loss. Mayweather fought Juan Manuel Marquez and dominated him en route to a 12-round decision. He also edged De La Hoya for the WBC 154-pound title, while breaking the pay-per-view record in the history of the sport.

But none of Mayweather’s earlier opponents had the youth, punching power and granite chin that Canelo possesses. Plus, Canelo is naturally bigger than Mayweather and could enter the ring with a 20-pound weight advantage.

Mayweather, who typically campaigns at 147 pounds, chose the bigger Canelo and will fight him at a catch weight of 152 pounds for the second fight in his new contract with SHOWTIME Networks, Inc., and its parent company, CBS Corporation. It certainly makes for an intriguing match, and anything but a gimme for “Money.”

Canelo said he has visualized how he will fight Mayweather, but he knows that whatever his plan is, it must have flexibility.

“Floyd is a different kind of fighter and this is a different kind of fight,” Canelo said. “For every fight there’s a game plan. But that game plan can go out the window in the first round. So you have to have a Plan B and a Plan C. And that is what we’ll work on.”

The conventional wisdom is that Canelo is too inexperienced to defeat the ring-savvy Mayweather, but Canelo points out that he has been fighting professionally since he was 15 years old and most of those 43 fights on his resume (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) were not against low caliber fighters. He has triumphed impressively against former undisputed welterweight champion Carlos Baldomir, future Hall of Famer Shane Mosley, Matthew Hatton, Kermit Cintron and former WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout.

Canelo put on a dazzling boxing display against Trout, who was coming off a shocking upset over Miguel Cotto. It was the type of victory that made Mayweather take notice. It also stamped Canelo as more than ready to seriously challenge Mayweather.

“I’m fighting the best. This is my chance to beat the best,” Canelo said. “It’s a chance to go down in history as the first guy to beat Floyd Mayweather.”

“THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO,” a 12-round fight for Canelo’s WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Championships and Mayweather’s WBA Super Welterweight Super World Championship taking place Saturday, Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, is promoted by Mayweather Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions and sponsored by Corona, O’Reilly Auto Parts, AT&T, Valvoline, Mexico Tourism, Fred Loya Insurance and Nature Nutrition. About “The One” and its co-main

floyd-mayweather2
On Sept. 14 boxing fans will congregate for “The One,” a pay-per-view fight card with a main event, Floyd “Money” Mayweather versus Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, and a co-main event, Lucas Matthysse versus Danny Garcia. Since that questionable prefix “co” was put there by someone else, and since any aficionado can tell you Matthysse-Garcia is much the more interesting fight, what do you say we save its preview for next week and treat Sept. 14’s other main event now?

There is a temptation whenever one watches Floyd Mayweather on a program he credits himself with executively producing to fixate on the banality of the spectacle, the vapidity of a guy telling you autobiographical details for the 17th time that were boring the first time, 6 1/2 years ago. But such fixation is missing the point if one wishes to understand the spectacle, forgiving, as always, any adult understandably uninterested in understanding the spectacle.

The purpose of the spectacle, and this Mayweather well comprehends, is saturation, a process television does better than its predecessor mediums, a means not unlike what immersion serious foreign-language students subject themselves to, a way of surrounding a person’s associations, and therefore thoughts, with an idea that goes to the very root of what makes a mind human: Sociability. A desire to socialize is what helped our ancestors climb out the trees in which they were cowering from all predators larger and faster and stronger, which were most, and develop an unprecedented form of communication that took them, in record time, to a place of predatory dominance so far beyond their adversaries they locked up the descendants of the creatures that feasted on them, in zoos, for their children’s amusement.

A biological drive to be round others and communicate with them, connecting in some necessary way, is the trait television preys on, flashing images that say nothing so profoundly as: “This is important because everyone is watching it because it is important enough for everyone to watch.” It’s an algorithm even a kindergartner can untwine, doing something because you are doing it, and it works and works so long as television can find its way to your retina, a gambit the ongoing unpleasantness between Time Warner Cable and CBS now cancels.

But wait, Showtime’s got round Time Warner Cable by posting its wholly unoriginal “All Access” program on the internet! Yes, well, that is helping it reach exactly zero new pay-per-viewers, because if you cared enough about “All Access: Mayweather vs. Canelo” to search for it online, your purchase of their Sept. 14 show is already accounted for; you are the 300,000th buyer, not the millionth. Which leaves the promotion with Canelomania in Mexico, real a phenomenon as anything built on television but doubtfully enough to set what records “The One’s” press tour assured.

Canelomania is evidence of television’s power in a way not even Mayweather quite understands; Alvarez is marketed continually, and has been for years, by Grupo Televisa, a media outfit whose affiliates own more than half the television stations in Mexico – for an American to understand Televisa’s power, he’d have to go back to the pre-cable days of three channels in the United States, and then combine a couple. The Televisa script says Alvarez is a midnight-clad villain but an innocent-faced hero, a fireheaded anomaly but an everyman, a taciturn corrupter of other men’s flesh but a caresser of baby’s cheeks, an urbane fashionista but a tamer of beach steeds, a man who dines in a silver microfiber suit and bathes in a ballbearing black bikini bottom – like an OkCupid profile unrestrained by plausibility. He has dated a Televisa reporter, dated Miss Mexico for Televisa, and visited on Televisa with Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto, the husband of a Televisa actress.

Canelo Alvarez is the Mexican rendition of contemporary American marketing’s best invention: An otherwise unmarked canvas with a unique imprimatura layer – Tiger Woods in 1998, Barack Obama in 2004 – onto which young and old alike can project their own best qualities. Earl Woods, an all-American dad in the very worst sense of those words, helped market his son as a savior; before America’s leader was President Obama he was derisively called “The One” by Republican campaign operatives; and in two Saturdays Saul Alvarez fights in “The One,” a singular event that will either mark Alvarez as boxing’s savior (Mayweather sure wasn’t) or, much more likely, mark him as yet another “one” some country or ethnicity got hoodwinked into projecting its collective pride on for what 36 minutes it took Floyd Mayweather to unknit him.

Is this fight unwatchably predictable as Mayweather’s last? No, decidedly it is not; Alvarez is a legitimately larger prizefighter who throws his right cross early, like one who knows no better, and Mayweather is a man who, Shane Mosley avers, can be caught with a righthand during the five minutes it takes him to secure escape routes and seal an opponent’s every exit. If Alvarez somehow buckles Mayweather the way Mosley did, Money May will have pounced on him a creature sourly distinct from the Sugar Shane he got 40 months ago.

But if the bell rings to begin round 3 and Alvarez has yet to imperil Mayweather, well, you’ll still have the co-main for solace, but not suspense: In his lifetime of fighting both amateurs and professionals, Mayweather has seen everything about Canelo, save his fabulous redbrick hair, at least 50 times, while Canelo has seen the likes of Mayweather not once. Plan accordingly.

LUCAS MATTHYSSE MEDIA ROUNDTABLE QUOTES “WE’RE GOING TO BEAT EACH OTHER UP” SATURDAY, SEPT. 14 AT MGM GRAND ON SHOWTIME PPV®

Lucas Matthysse
LOS ANGELES (Aug. 30 2013) – Looking strong, fit and sounding ultra confident, a relaxed Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse was in Carson, Calif., last Saturday to meet with the media in attendance at StubHub Center and conduct an interview on the SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING® telecast.

The hard-hitting WBC Interim Super Lightweight World Champion was headed to the California desert where he’ll spend the next week or so training before he departs to Las Vegas for his mega-confrontation with undefeated, Undisputed Super Lightweight World Champion Danny “Swift’’ Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) on Saturday, Sept. 14, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

A main event on any other boxing card and a division-defining fight if ever there was one, Matthysse’s eagerly awaited match with Garcia will immediately precede the Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez showdown on the record-breaking “THE ONE’’ fight card from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Below are highlights of what Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s), who’s scored a staggering 94 percent of his wins by knockout, said during the media roundtable.

LUCAS MATTHYSSE

(Opening comments)

“Thank you for being here. I really appreciate the opportunity for this fight, and I’m going to do my best.

“I know that winning is going to open (a lot of) doors so I am taking this fight seriously. Hopefully, it (a victory) means a future fight with Floyd Mayweather. Of course I want to fight Floyd.’’

(Upcoming plans)

“I’m in California. More than anything else, I’m here to get used to the climate. I’m going to finish up my sparring here. It’s my last phase of training. I just want to get used to the difference in the climate before I go for my fight.

“Training in the desert is going to help a lot. I’m going to take a few easy days just to get acclimated. Obviously, the desert air and heat is very similar to Las Vegas.’’

(On how he’s dealing with the Garcia’s mind games)

“It doesn’t bother me. It just shows that they’re worried. That’s why they’re talking so much.’’

(On what concerns him about Danny Garcia)

“Nothing worries me. I’ve trained very hard and I’m ready for anything. (Being so) very well prepared is what gives me the confidence. I’m not only ready for 12 rounds, I’m ready for 15.”

(On whether he was angry over the length of time it took for the fight to be made)

“(There is) no animosity whatsoever. I was a little disappointed that it took so long, but I’m happy that it finally got done.’’

(On Garcia’s style)

“I feel his style suits me. He’s not a very good boxer. He’s a fighter that’s aggressive and comes forward just like I do. I like that.

“Yes, I think I can take it (his left hook). I’ve been hit before and been able to withstand it. But if Danny drops me, I’m going to get up.

“Hopefully he comes towards me, but it doesn’t really matter. I have a feeling that we’re both going to be very aggressive and, like I said, we’re going to beat each other up. It will be a great fight.’’

(Besides your awesome power, what are your other strengths?)

“I haven’t really shown my boxing, but it’s not my fault. (I can’t show it because) my opponents run from me, so I have to go after them. But I know how to box.‘’

(On the attention he’s receiving by fighting on a record-breaking event like this)

“It’s an honor to be in a fight on this big of a stage. I know there’s going to be a lot of interest. I’m just happy so many people are going to see my style of fighting.

“I’m very gracious for all the attention I am getting. I’m even starting to get used to it. I’ve felt good since the first time I came to the United States. I’ve always had a lot of support.’’

(On his newfound popularity)

“Actually, I’m a little surprised by how many people that have started to follow me. Even all the Latino people, they give me support and love and it feels great.’’

(Do your recent fast starts have anything to do with losing two controversial decisions?)

“Those two fights that I lost were (good experiences for me) and, yes, I learned from those fights. Obviously, I’ve come out a little faster now, but not just because of those fights but because I have a little different preparation.’’

(On the recent success of Argentine fighters – for one, Marcos Maidana)

“Some of us Argentine fighters are going through a good moment now. It’s an honor to be fighting in this era (with so many going well). All we do is train hard and use our heart in our training and in our fights. Actually, we’ve been going pretty well for a while now.‘’

(On the difference between the Matthysse of today and the one who debuted 10 years ago)

“I grew, mentally and physically. You learn from the fights, of course, but not only the fights. You learn from the traveling. I’ve learned so much, and I’ve gained experience. That’s the difference.’’

(On his upcoming sparring with Tim Bradley in Palm Springs)

“Obviously, he’s got very good speed and experience, and that’s going to help a lot.’’

(On why he declined a mini-press tour that would have included a stop in Philadelphia, Garcia’s hometown)

“It was going to interfere with my preparation; and that is basically the reason. My preparation is very important.’’

(On whether he would like to fight in Argentina again)

“I would love to go back someday and fight. I have a lot of people who come up and ask me when I’ll be fighting there again since it’s been awhile.’’

(On his preparedness)

“Conditioning is a key. That’s no secret. Danny will be in good condition, so will I. If you get hit, you have to be in good condition.

“All the knockouts have given me a lot of confidence, being able to finish off my fights early. But I don’t train that way. I train to box and go the rounds I’m supposed to go. I don’t look for the knockout, But if it comes, it comes.’’

(On Garcia’s weaknesses)

“There are a few but I don’t want to reveal my secrets.’’

(On what the fight with Garcia means to him)

“It’s the fight of my life … and I’m going to take advantage of it.’’

What, me worried? Mayweather isn’t and maybe Canelo should be

Floyd_Mayweather
Canelo Alvarez keeps getting asked about how he will react to Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s trash talk. It’s a question that assumes the inevitable. Not if. But when. Funny thing is, there’s not been much of the Mayweather trash that seemed to type-cast him a couple of years ago.

The live stream of Mayweather’s media day from his Las Vegas gym Wednesday, projected a CEO-like persona. He was cool, calm and self-assured, almost eerily so, about his 152-pound fight on Sept. 14 at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand. Canelo said all of the right things Tuesday at his own media day from Big Bear, Calif. He talked as if he were reading from a tele-prompter. Nothing that Mayweather says, Canelo promised, will bother him.

Maybe not, but a Mayweather without the expected insults might be a reason for Canelo to sweat. Why? Mayweather doesn’t appear to be worried at all about the 23-year-old Mexican who is about to make his first step on to boxing’s biggest stage.

Much has been said about Mayweather’s evolution over the last couple of years, or at least since his infamous outburst at HBO’s Larry Merchant after his controversial stoppage of Victor Ortiz. He’s appears to have grown beyond the spontaneous, emotional outbursts that always seemed to there, just waiting to erupt. Maybe, his well-documented time last summer in jail is a factor. Maybe, it’s the accumulation of years and the wisdom that comes with them. Maybe, it’s because of his Showtime contract and the responsibility that comes with a potential $250 million. By way, that’s what Amazon founder Jeff Bezos paid for The Washington Post a few weeks ago. That might say more about the state of the newspaper biz than it does about Mayweather. But you get the idea. Mayweather is part mogul and part boxer these days. Trash-talk is for kids. He isn’t one anymore.

Nevertheless, profane insults from Mayweather continue to identify him as much as that precise counter. Hence, Canelo gets asked that familiar question. When trash-talk was as inevitable as his next breath, Mayweather often would explode into uninterrupted streams of it when threatened. Blame it on a streak of insecurity, or a big ego, or quick temper. Whatever the diagnosis, it’s probably still there, even if tempered by maturity. Scratch it with a real threat and an outburst figures to follow. In Canelo, there is no threat, or least that’s what Mayweather’s tone and words suggest.

“Am I fighting a guy who is just a pushover?’’ Mayweather said. “I don’t think so.’’

But, he then said in a matter-of-fact tone, Canelo record – 43 fights, 42 victories and one draw – includes opponents he should have knocked out.

“I’m not talking about A or B fighters,’’ said Mayweather, who praised Canelo as a solid boxer-puncher, yet also said that he went the distance against fighters who rated a C or D on his grade scale.

Between getting a fresh shave for his bald head and bites of a chicken diner, Mayweather talked about a lot more. There were jokes, some philosophy and an opinion that Juan Manuel Marquez deserves to be Mexico’s No. 1 fighter instead of the popular Canelo. But you never heard the flurry of expletives that are symptomatic of that one word: Worried.

He’s not.

Maybe, Canelo should be.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER MEDIA DAY IN LAS VEGAS ‘MONEY’: ‘I WAS BORN FOR THIS’

Floyd_Mayweather
LAS VEGAS (Aug. 29, 2013) – Seventeen days before the record-breaking “THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO” mega-event on Saturday, Sept. 14, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., live on SHOWTIME PPV®,, boxing superstar Floyd “Money” Mayweather hosted the biggest Media Day of his career Wednesday at The Mayweather Boxing Club.

Hordes of media from around the world crammed into the upscale gym in Las Vegas to watch the Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion (44-0, 26 KO’s) as he continued to prepare for his long-awaited showdown against WBC, WBA & Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) during Mexican Independence Day Weekend.

During his Media Day, which lasted nearly three hours, a confident, relaxed and chiseled Mayweather did countless interviews, posed for photos and worked out. His workout consisted of hitting the mitts, hitting the heavyweight bag, hitting the speed bag, jumping rope, stretching and doing calisthenics.

Viewers who watched a live stream of the proceedings also got to watch Mayweather get a haircut in his dressing room before heading for his workout.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER

“This was just a light workout today; it was cool. I appreciate all the media coming out and the fans for supporting me throughout my career. It’s been truly a blessing.

“I think I’ll be a lot sharper for this fight. My training camp has been great. Actually, this is one of my best training camps I’ve had, probably since 2005. On my first day back, I got right back into sparring. I think I sparred seven rounds. So as of now, my training camp’s been smooth. My dad is happy, Leonard (Ellerbe) is happy, Al (Haymon) is happy and I’m happy. I’ve been boxing a lot of rounds so I’m sharp. I’m in great condition and happy to get right back in there. I feel tremendous.

“My weight is made. I came into training camp weighing 150 or 149 and I came into the gym today probably weighing 150 or 149.

“Canelo is a solid competitor but it is what it is: I’ve faced the best in this sport, I know what it takes to be involved in a fight of this magnitude and I’m dedicated to my craft. I was born for this.

“This is a great matchup. He’s a puncher. I’m a sharp boxer. You know, a lot of times I hit these guys and I make them go into survival mode. Even in the Robert Guerrero fight I was looking for the knockout, but I hurt my hand. So I wasn’t impressed with myself — because I didn’t get the knockout. This time around, I’ll be looking for the knockout.

“He’s banking on his youth, I’m banking I on my experience. I have a lot of experience in championship fights. Look at his resume, look at my resume and see what you come up with.

“I can’t talk about the past, but I can talk about the present time and I can talk about the future. The present time is, I’m undefeated, and the future is, I’m going to continue to work hard and give the fans what they want to see.

“On Sept. 14, I just want everybody around the world to tune in and enjoy a great night of boxing.”

(More on facing Canelo)

“He’s no pushover; I can’t overlook him. I just have to go out and execute the game plan and do what I do best. Nothing worries me. I can make adjustments.

“He is one of the best in boxing at this particular time. He’s young and strong. He’s got guts so we’ll see how the fight plays out.

“It’s not about the weight, it’s about the skills. The skills pay the bills. I can’t wait to get in there and compete and test my skills against this young guy. I feel good, I’m still hungry.”

(On Canelo’s opposition)

“Did Canelo KO Austin Trout? This is a whole different ballgame. He may be predicting a knockout but all you have to do is look at the opponents he’s faced. I really don’t know too many, but a lot of the guys went the distance with him. And we’re not just talking about A-fighters but D- and C-fighters. Guys that he should have knocked out in the fourth round, they were able to go into the eighth and ninth rounds even though they were caught with numerous shots.’

“I don’t think Ricky Hatton’s brother is on the level of a Floyd Mayweather.”

(On notion that Canelo will stop him)

“Oscar said he was gonna knock me out also. Did you see what happened in that fight? People are entitled to do their opinion. People are going to say what they’re going to say. My job is to be the best I can be and continue to do my job. There’s a reason I do record-breaking numbers.

“My last fight against Guerrero, he thought it was just gonna be easy. A lot of times people, fighters, look from the outside and think to themselves, ‘this can’t be that difficult,’ but once they get inside that squared circle with me it’s totally different.”

(Gameplan)

“I’m going to show him a lot of angles. I have a lot of experience, and experience is going to be a factor. It’s going to be real, real different for him at this level.”

(On Canelo’s Popularity)

“Among Hispanic/Mexican/Latin fighters, I don’t really know who has the biggest following but if I had to say so, I would say probably (Juan Manuel) Marquez because he has accomplished more and done a lot for the sport of boxing. So I don’t support the thought (or subscribe to the feeling) that Canelo has a bigger following than (Marquez).”

(On why Canelo took this fight)

“I can’t really say. Of course, sometimes some people want their No 1 spot, not just No. 1 in (their) weight class but they want to be known as the best in their sport. They want all the attention, the paydays, the money. (For me) this took years and years of hard work and dedication, belief and a strong team.”

(His hands)

“I went to three different doctors after the Guerrero fight. Everything is OK.”

(Staying ahead of the game)

“Every guy I face is always heavier. I think I’m just a very, very sharp fighter. I stay mentally sharp; by that I mean I stay five or six steps ahead of my opponents. This is chess, not checkers. These are moves you have to think about. At this level, you’ve got to get 10 steps ahead of your opponent.”

(On what it takes to remain at the top)

“You’ve got to be mentally tough, push yourself to the limit, be physically sharp, have a great chin and a tremendous heart.”

(The ONE 10-city media tour)

“The tour was wild, crazy. It started in New York and ended in Los Angeles. I think it was great for me, Canelo Alvarez, the chance to embrace the fans and also to get the chance to go to Mexico. I have a lot of fans in Mexico.”

(Fighters that impress him)

“I like Leo Santa Cruz. He’s unbelievable. I think he should be on the pound-for-pound list.”

(On Garcia-Matthysse)

“Both fighters at 140 pounds are really tough punchers and great fighters. I can’t see it going the distance.”

(Still The ONE)

“I’m the face of boxing and I’m happy that I was able to transcend and change the sport in a totally different way. At one particular time in the late 70’s, 80’s and all the way to the 90’s, it was all about the heavyweights. Then I came in and brought attention to the smaller guys. I think I’ve done a lot for the sport of boxing, and boxing has done a lot for me.”
LEONARD ELLERBE, CEO of Mayweather Promotions

“This is the fight that the fans wanted. They demanded it, and this is the fight that Floyd wanted. In my opinion, this fight will be the biggest in the history of the sport.

“Canelo fought on a few of our undercards. We know what he brings to the table. He is a tremendous fighter, he is the biggest star in Mexico and he has a tremendous following. Floyd has a lot of Mexican fans, too. He loves Mexico. Mexicans are intelligent fans. They know the sport of boxing. Floyd has defeated a number of Mexican fighters and he has a tremendous amount of respect for their history and their fighters.

“I think now is the right time for this fight to happen. Canelo is coming off a big victory with Austin Trout and Floyd with Guerrero. This is The ONE.

“An active Floyd Mayweather … WOW.”

ISHE SMITH, IBF Junior Middleweight Champion

“It’s been an amazing last six months. I was honored with an “Ishe Smith Day.” It’s been a rollercoaster ride for me since the days of The Contender and it was tough, and it hurt, but to be a world champion now and have Floyd behind me is just really exciting. I am blessed.

“One thing Floyd told me: ‘I can get you to the door but then it is up to you. On Sept. 14 (when he defends against Carlos Molina), this is another opportunity where he shows me the door.

“And like I did in Detroit (when he won the title over Cornelius Bundrage), I plan on knocking that door down again.”

ASHLEY THEOPHANE, Former Brisith Junior Welterweight Champion who faces Pablo Cesar Cano in opening bout of pay-per-view telecast

“You know this has been my dream since I was five years old. I watched Mike Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard and was inspired by them. It’s been an amazing journey. America has opened up and welcomed me as well as the Money Team.

“This is the biggest fight of my life, and I know I need to come out victorious. It is a magnificent card; you’ve got three world champions on there.”

VIDEO: All Access: Mayweather vs. Canelo – “Canelo’s Got a Problem” –

ASHLEY THEOPHANE ON SPARRING FLOYD MAYWEATHER AND HIS SEPT 14th FIGHT

I’ve officially been a member of Mayweather Promotions for just over two weeks now – and it feels great!
My fight with Pablo Cesar Cano has been signed and sealed for September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
I’m the PPV opener for Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather vs. Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez showdown. Which is a huge honour and a huge responsibility, handed to me by Leonard Ellerbe and Floyd himself.

My fight will be followed by my team mate, and world champion, Ishe Smith, as he defends his world title against Carlos Molina. My former opponent, who is currently world champion, Danny Garcia will face the dangerous Lucas Matthysse in the co-main event.
Then the fight everybody has been waiting for – “Mayweather-Canelo” will happen. This is the best PPV card that I can remember, by a long way – I might be just that little bit biased, but it’s a brilliant card. Floyd already holds the record for most PPV ‘buys’ for his fight with Oscar De La Hoya, and this looks like beating it.
Over the last two weeks I’ve been very busy and challenged, sparring world champions Floyd Mayweather and Ishe Smith, Al Haymon fighter, Dequan Arnett and world title challenger, Arash Usmanee. It is really top level stuff.
I do road work with two world champions in Floyd and Ishe. They both motivate and inspire me. They are never short of words of advice, which is always appreciated.
On Saturday at 6am, the Money team fighters hit Mount Charleston. It is always a hard suffocating run, but one that brings much mental satisfaction once completed.
The Nevada Boxing Hall Of Fame evening was hosted by the Monte Carlo hotel and casino, it was a fantastic event. Boxing legends Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Larry Holmes and Earnie Shavers were in-attendance. Legendary promoters Don King and Bob Arum were also there. Floyd won an award for ‘Fighter of the Year’ and Ishe Smith was presented with an award for being the first Las Vegas born fighter to win a world title belt.
One half of my coaching team from New York City, Jihad Abdul Aziz arrived in Las Vegas to assist Nate Jones in getting me primed and ready for September 14th. He’s been here a week and we’ve been putting in hard and quality work.
Those at the top of the mountain didn’t just fall there. Putting in hard work and believing in yourself, especially when many people doubt you, will see you achieve your dreams or at least create opportunities.
It’s been a long hard road to the top of this particular mountain, but to have the number one boxer in the world recognize my talent, and present me with such a great opportunity, has made the hard work and dedication all worthwhile.
I must add without René Carayol, this wouldn’t be possible. He also saw my potential, believed in my talent and backed me to help make my dreams reality.
This week saw Ishe Smith, Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse, Carlos Molina, Pablo Cano and I conduct a conference call with the media. Over 30 journalists took part, and it was really great to hear all the fighters sounding confident, as we prepare for the biggest fights of our lives.
Ishe Smith and I did a TV Interview at Fox 5 studios on Friday, it was good fun. We spoke about our careers and promoted the ‘back to school’ drive which happened on Saturday. It was a privilege to be part of a genuine good cause giving to school kids and their parents. As most parents around the world know, it is not cheap to buy your kids the necessary school clothes, laptops, books and pens. I’ve seen just how hard it is for most parents first hand, so helping out and putting a smile on the kids and parents face was so worthwhile.
I finished off the week with a much needed 90 minute sports massage.
Just 4 weeks until ‘The One’ is here in Las Vegas. I’m working as hard as is possibly can, every day. This is the chance of a lifetime.
Prepare for fireworks!

CANELO ALVAREZ MEDIA WORKOUT A SMASHING SUCCESS AS REPORTERS PACK GYM TO SEE YOUNG SUPERSTAR

Saul Alvarez
BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (Aug. 28, 2013) – Dozens of TV camera crews, newspaper reporters, photographers, online boxing media and bloggers made the 100-plus mile trek up the mountain to Big Bear Lake from the Los Angeles area on Tuesday to catch their final glimpse of WBC, WBA & Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) before he travels to Las Vegas for his mega-showdown with undefeated Eight-Time and Five-Division World Champion Floyd “Money” Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO’s) as they headline “THE ONE: MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO” fight card on Saturday, Sept. 14, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

During his two-hour media workout at Shane Mosley’s jam-packed home gym, that was streamed live on YouTube, UStream, sports.sho.com/live, http://www.goldenboypromotions.com, and http://www.mayweatherpromotions.com, the super welterweight world champion did countless interviews, some in groups and others in one-on-ones. He also hit the heavy bag, sparred several rounds with weighted gloves and did calisthenics as 50’s doo-wop and early 60’s music blared in the background.

The freckled-faced, red-haired 23-year-old Canelo has been staying at Mosley’s house and working out at his home gym for about a month. The young superstar is scheduled to leave Sunday for Las Vegas.
Below is what Canelo, as cool, calm, collected and confident as always, his trainer Chepo Reynoso, hid older brother Ricardo and Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya said Tuesday:

CANELO ALVAREZ, Unified Super Welterweight World Champion

(Opening comments)

“I feel good about myself and can’t wait to get in the ring. I’m ready for this.

“I’m working very hard and doing my job. Even though I’m young, I have a lot of experience. That’s why I asked for this.

“This will be a tough physical fight, but I feel I have a lot of advantages. I am working on the things I can take advantage of.”

(On training in Big Bear)

“Big Bear has been great. It is one of the greatest places to train. Even though it is a lot of work, I’ve been enjoying this camp. We’ve accomplished everything here that we set out to do.”

(On making the contracted weight of 152 pounds, two less than his normal fighting limit)

“The weight is not going to be a factor. I’ll be fine for the fight. It’s no big thing. Actually, I feel I’m ahead of the curve. I’m not worried at all. It (the weight) will come off and I will be fine.

“Actually in some ways I’m in my best shape, or will be. Before I fought Austin Trout, I’d been off longer than I will be for this fight. I needed a lot of time to prepare for Trout. So, in some ways for this camp, my work has been easier.”

(On his potential)

“I’ve always said that I’ve never fought to my potential but that’s because I’ve never had an opponent to bring it out. I feel that maybe Mayweather will be the one to bring it out.

“I’m not coming just to fight, I’m coming to win.”

(On feeling he doesn’t get the proper respect)

“I think a lot of people underestimate me, but those people are mostly critics, reporters. You never hear anything from the guys I fight. It’s only from those outside the ring that think I am beatable.”

(On fighting on Mexican Independence Day Weekend)

“This is a big day, an important time. It’s Mexican Independence day. I know I’ll have a lot of people there to support me.”

(On studying film)

“I’ve studied tapes of the fights he (Mayweather) had trouble in, like those against Miguel Cotto and Jose Luis Castillo. I’m looking for ways to penetrate Mayweather’s defense like they did. Cotto had success, but couldn’t maintain it. I plan to maintain it.”

“I don’t think it’s important to get off to a fast start and just win the early rounds. I want to win all the rounds. All the rounds are important, from the first to the last and I want to win them all.”

(Toughest part of being at training camp and away from home)

“I miss not seeing my daughter. I miss not being with her.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA, President of Golden Boy Promotions

“I remember the first time I fought in a fight like this, a fight of this magnitude, and how I excited I was. Fighting on Mexican Independence Day is such an honor. You know both guys are going to be in great shape and it is going to be an exciting main event. But I’m betting on my horse. I feel it could be time for the changing of the guard.

“This is going to be a very interesting night of boxing, and definitely a memorable one. It’s already a record-breaking event and now we’ll see if it breaks the (pay-per-view) record. With all the social and media outlets out there, chances are that it might.”

CHEPO REYNOSO, Canelo’s Trainer

“I’ve known Canelo since he began to box when he was 13. [Co-trainer] Eddie [Reynoso] and I have been with him from the start. He’s the same kid now as he was then, very humble yet very dedicated.

“Canelo was always very strong but now he possesses the intelligence. We always knew from day one that he would be great.

“Floyd Sr. has said some negative things about Eddie and I. He’s questioned us as cornermen and trainers. Well, we’ve had five world champions and been involved in 40 world title fights. The Mayweathers [Floyd Sr., Roger and Jeff] may be more popular and well-known because they were pro fighters, but it doesn’t hurt their reputations that they work with a superstar.

“I think after Canelo wins on September 14, people will realize that he has a pretty good corner too. Eddie and I may not have the reputation that the Mayweathers have, but we know we can do the job. People will see on Sept. 14.

“Watching Canelo win, watching Floyd Mayweather go down, that’s our ultimate goal.”

RICARDO ALVAREZ, Canelo’s Brother (Eight years older)

“Our entire family is very excited and motivated for this fight. We’ve known since the very beginning how great Canelo could be. The magnitude of this fight is enormous, but there is no doubt in any of our minds that he is going to win.

“Around the house, he was always called ‘Saul.’ Of course, worldwide, he is known mostly as ‘Canelo.’ But for me, his older brother, he will always be known as ‘Pecas’ [which translated into English means ‘Freckles’].”

“Freckles” will try to leave his mark on Mayweather and the boxing world on Sept. 14.

Also, Ishe Smith vs. Carlos Molina square off in a 12-round battle for Smith’s IBF Junior Middleweight World Title which is promoted in association with Warriors Boxing. The opening bout on SHOWTIME PPV features a 10-round welterweight showdown between Pablo Cesar Cano and Ashley Theophane. The mega-event will be produced and distributed live by SHOWTIME PPV® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT. The event can be heard in Spanish using secondary audio programming (SAP).

STAR BOXING PRESENTS “ROCKIN FIGHTS 10” AT THE PARAMOUNT, SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

NEW YORK, (August 26, 2013) Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing returns to it’s Long Island home on Saturday, SEPTEMBER 14 at The Paramount in Huntington, New York, with the tenth installment of it’s acclaimed series of world class professional boxing, “ROCKIN FIGHTS”.

“It’s always special to promote at The Paramount, truly one of the premier venue for professional boxing in the country. This is the tenth “ROCKIN FIGHTS” event we’ve held there, the first nine selling out, and we’re thrilled to showcase Huntington’s favorite son, undefeated Chris Algieri and former world champion Joshua Clottey in separate bouts” said DeGuardia.

“Also, knowing that SEPTEMBER 14 is such a big night in boxing, we will broadcast LIVE from Las Vegas, the Mayweather/Canelo world title clash on the big screen ( multiple viewing areas) at The Paramount following the action in the ring.”

Known as ‘The Pride of Huntington”, undefeated junior welterweight Chris Algieri with be making the third start of his 2013 campaign, clashing with tough Nicaraguan veteran Wilfredo “EL Zurdo” Acuna in the main event at “ROCKIN FIGHTS 10”.

Algieri kicked off the year in style; dominating Jose Peralta on FEBRUARY 23 over ten rounds towards a unanimous decision win at The Paramount in a career best performance telecast on the NBC Sports Network.

Most recently Algieri swept a ten round unanimous decision over former world title challenger Mike Arnaoutis on JULY 20 at The Paramount to improve his record to 17-0-0 (7KO’s).

Sporting a record of 14-12-0 (11KO’s), Acuna is known for providing the toughest test to many undefeated prospects across the country.

Now competing in the middleweight and jr middleweight divisions, former world champion Clottey, 36-4-0 (22KO’s), returns to the ring to face Dashon “Fly Boy” Johnson, 14-12-3 (5KO’s), of Escondido, California.

Toussaint made his successful pro debut, pitching a four round shutout over On’rey Towns on JULY 20.

Mayweather_Alvarez_Slone
LONDON (August 23) – BoxNation is delighted to announce that it will be bringing the hit ‘All Access’ series exclusively to UK screens ahead of Floyd “Money” Mayweather’s superfight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next month.

The documentary kicks-off on Monday 26 August at 7pm and will be free-to-air on BoxNation for Sky TV customers.

The series offers an intimate portrait into the lives of both fighters as it profiles boxing’s most anticipated card in over a decade, with two of the sports undefeated, and genuine pound-for-pound kings, clashing in a stunning bill at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 14.

The compelling collision between the legendary Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO’s) and rising superstar Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO’s) sees the WBC, WBA Super, WBA and Ring Magazine super world light-middleweight world championships all on the line.

Also featuring on the night as a co-main event is the mouthwatering clash between the reigning WBC, WBA Super and Ring Magazine super world light-welterweight world champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (26-0, 20 KO’s) as he takes on the fearsome Argentine puncher Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) .

Ishe Smith and Carlos Molina also square off in a 12-round battle for Smith’s IBF light-middleweight world title and Britain’s Ashley Theophane, a new recruit to Mayweather Promotions, makes his Las Vegas bow against hardened Mexican Pablo Cesar Cano.

Mayweather and Alvarez are currently in the midst of their training camps, with the eight-time and five-division world champion Mayweather preferring the trappings of home as he prepares at his famed Las Vegas gym. What the boxers said Tuesday:

ABNER MARES, WBC Featherweight World Champion

“My preparation is done and I’m ready to perform and put on a great show. I’ve got a hard fight ahead of me. Jhonny Gonzalez is a tremendous fighter, tough, and very skilled. But I’m here to fight.

“Jhonny may well be thinking that this is his last shot in a big fight, so I know he’ll be bringing his ‘A’ game, which is why I know I need to bring my ‘A-plus’ game on Saturday. I always train like a contender anyway. When I’m getting ready for a fight, I don’t think of myself as a champion. I don’t want to lose my edge, my hunger. There’s no way I will ever become complacent.

“You can’t really compare Jhonny to my last opponent (Daniel ‘Ponce’ de Leon). Jhonny is more of a thinker than Ponce, who just came to brawl. I know I have to fight him in a very smart way.

“I’m very happy and proud to be fighting the main event. This card features a bunch of us Los Angeles guys, and is really an old-school card, like ones they used to put on at the Forum. The undercard is filled with a lot of up-and-comers. Any of those fights could serve as the televised co-main event.

“I know they’re talking about me fighting Santa Cruz. It would be a spectacular fight between two Southern California fighters. If you know me you know I’ll fight anybody. But I have a tough fight in front of me.

“I’m feeling really strong at this weight class, but who knows? Maybe someday I’ll make a decision to move up a weight class to 130 pounds and win a fourth world title in my fourth weight class. But that’s down the road. For now, all my focus is on Jhonny Gonzalez and putting on a great fight for the fans.

“Saturday is going to be a very exciting night of fights. You won’t want to miss it.”

JHONNY GONZALEZ, Former Two-Division World Champion

“I have fought at StubHub before so I am very comfortable being at that venue. A lot of fight fans will recognize me from the past fights that I have fought there.

“On Saturday night my fight with Mares is going to be a war. Mares built his career with hard-earned fights and he wants to defend his title. I am motivated to claim the title. At this point in my career I feel that this could be one of my last opportunities to take that title.

“I invite all fight fans to witness what will be a battle for the ages. Abner Mares is youthful and strong but I have experience and will come well prepared with my own arsenal of weapons.”

LEO SANTA CRUZ, Former IBF Bantamweight World Champion

“‘I’m very excited and happy for the opportunity to be fighting for a world title for a second time, and now I have to take advantage of it. I’ve been training 100 percent in the gym and I’m really motivated. This card has so many great fighters on it, and they are all going to do their best to put on a great show. I just want to do my part.

“I feel great. I think when I took that break it did my body a lot of good. I know I felt more rested. But working as hard as I do doesn’t give you much time to rest. A week after my last fight I was right back in the gym. My Dad told me I had to be ready for whenever they called again.

“I think Terrazas is going to be toughest fighter I’ve fought in my career. He’s a great champion. He likes to come forward and throw a lot of punches. He’s a true Mexican warrior, very brave, but those are the kinds of fighters I like to fight.

“Some guys are like wildfires, they get crazy and throw a lot of wild punches. He’s not like that. Terrazas also has great technique. But he doesn’t run, and those types of guys are easier for me. I know he’s going to give it his best and leave it all in the ring. I expect a very hard fight. Both of us have trained really hard to give a great fight, and the better fighter is going to win.

“It’s an honor for me to be fighting on SHOWTIME as often as I have. It’s been a great experience for me. I still can’t believe I’ve accomplished this much in so short of time, and it’s still like a dream for me.

“But thanks to my Dad, who’s always pushing me in the gym, Al Haymon, Golden Boy Promotions and SHOWTIME, I’m where I’m at right now.”

VICTOR TERRAZAS, WBC Super Bantamweight Champion

“This is going to be a very active (busy) fight. Going in we know that Leo Santa Cruz is the favorite in his hometown, but I’m champion of the world and I’m here to show you why I’m the champion. I’m really excited about fighting in his backyard, and I’m confident I’ll be successful. I am ready.

“I do believe I’m getting overlooked in this fight, but that doesn’t take away my desire or my will to win. Being overlooked also doesn’t give me any more motivation, but that’s only because I’m already motivated. There’s a reason why I’m champion.

“Fighting in Los Angeles and SHOWTIME is a great opportunity for me to get more exposure and for more fans to know who I am. I absolutely know the importance of getting great exposure and know what a victory on Saturday will mean for me.

“More than anything the added exposure gives you more notoriety and opens more doors for you, not only in boxing but everything else. I am looking forward to this fight very much.”

DOMINIC BREAZEALE, Unbeaten Heavyweight

“I think this is probably the biggest step-up in my career and the toughest opponent so far in my career. Lenroy Thomas has a ton of experience and ring generalship compared to me. He’s a 6-foot-1 southpaw, and I haven’t fought a lefty since the amateurs.

“But I am definitely prepared and way anxious to get in there. I can’t wait to fight. The only way to build character as a boxer is to take it a step at a time and fight the best fighters you can. This is what I’ve been doing and on Saturday I’m taking the next step.”

JOSEPH “JO JO” DIAZ JR., Undefeated Featherweight

“This is my seventh fight this year and I’m well-prepared and definitely ready to go. I had a really great training camp. I know my opponent is a pretty sound guy with good ability, but I’m ready to give everybody a great show.

“I’m very excited to be fighting on this undercard because it’s all local fighters. It’s really going to be a great night of boxing.

“I think this is a step-up fight for me, which is what I want. I always want to be stepping up and fighting good fighters just to prove to everybody that I’m improving. This will be a great fight. .If all goes well on Saturday – there’s no injuries or cuts or anything — I’m looking to maybe fight again next month.”

CALIFORNIA KIDS HIGHLIGHTED ON SHOWTIME EXTREME® THIS SATURDAY, AUGUST 24 OLYMPIANS DOMINIC BREAZEALE AND JOSEPH DIAZ JR. JOINED BY UNDEFEATED ANTONIO OROZCO AT STUBHUB CENTER

CARSON, CALIF. (Aug. 21, 2013) – Rising junior welterweight star Antonio “Relentless” Orozco and two highly regarded members of the Olympic class of 2012, Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr. and Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale will get a glimpse of the national spotlight this Saturday, Aug. 24 when they step into the ring at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif., live on SHOWTIME EXTREME (8 p.m. ET/PT), followed by the live SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING®(10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, immediately following the series premiere of ALL ACCESS: Mayweather vs. Canelo) doubleheader featuring two world championship matches.

In an eight-round heavyweight bout, Los Angeles’ unbeaten Breazeale faces St. Catherine, Jamaica’s Lenroy “TNT” Thomas. Plus, Diaz, of South El Monte, Calif., looks to keep his perfect record intact in a six-round featherweight bout against Phoenix’s Noel Mendoza and in a 10-round junior welterweight attraction, San Diego’s Orozco faces seasoned opponent Ivan Hernandez.

“A great card just got even better with the addition of the SHOWTIME EXTREME fights featuring three of the top young stars in the sport,” said President of Golden Boy Promotions Oscar De La Hoya. “2012 Olympians Dominic Breazeale and Joseph Diaz Jr. have made great strides since the London Games and Antonio Orozco is on the verge of big things at junior welterweight. They’re all in tough this weekend, making for some exciting fights.”

2012 United States Olympian Dominic “Trouble” Breazeale (5-0, 5 KO’s) has the size, style and personality to become a superstar in the heavyweight division and thus far in his young pro career, the 27-year-old has also shown the power, knocking out each of his opponents in two rounds or less. On Saturday, he will face his toughest test yet in seasoned southpaw Lenroy “TNT” Thomas (16-2, 8 KO’s), who has won 16 of his last 17 bouts.

Showing rapid improvement with each fight, 25-year-old Antonio “Relentless” Orozco (17-0, 13 KO’s) has reached the point in his career where fight fans are starting to talk about his prospects when fighting the best 140-pounders in the world. That’s exactly where Orozco wants to be and he doesn’t plan on letting his growing base of followers down Saturday when he faces Miami, Florida’s hard-hitting Ivan Hernandez (29-3, 22 KO’s).

Joseph “Jo Jo” Diaz Jr. (6-0, 4 KO’s) has stayed busy since his pro debut following the 2012 Olympics and despite such a hectic schedule, he’s handled each challenge with poise and maturity. Coming off a body shot knockout of Luis Cosme in July, the 20-year-old Diaz relishes the opportunity to perform in front of his Southern California fans. Looking to spoil the homecoming will be Phoenix’ Noel Mendoza (6-2, 1 KO’s).

East L.A.’s phenom Julian “El Camaron” Ramirez puts his 8-0 (5 KO’s) record on the line in a featherweight six rounder, Mexican super bantamweight contender Rey Vargas (14-0, 13 KO’s) looks for another knockout in an eight-round contest, and Nogales’s Jesus Ruiz (28-5-5, 21 KO’s) takes on Los Angeles’ Enrique Quevedo (14-5-1, 9 KO’s) in an eight-round meeting of super bantamweight veterans. Plus, undefeated promising prospects Las Vegas’ Ronald Gavril (5-0 (4 KO’s) and Kansas City’s Lanell Bellows (4-0-1,4 KO’s) will be featured in non-televised bouts.

FLOYD MAYWEATHER AND CANELO ALVAREZ PUT ON CANVAS!: Award Winning Artist Commissioned to Create Artwork for Mayweather vs Canelo Superfight!

Mayweather_Alvarez_Slone
LAS VEGAS (Aug 21, 2013) – Multi-award winning artist Richard T. Slone, known by fight fans around the globe for his unique style and ability to capture the true essence of the sweet science with each brush stroke, has been commissioned to create the official artwork for the upcoming Superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, which will take place on Saturday Sept 14, at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, live on SHOWTIME PPV®.

Slone will be ringside at the fight to complete his series of official paintings and will also be hosting an exhibit of his works at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on September 12-15th. “Having Richard T. Slone creating unique artwork for this fight is a thrill and an honor for us at Golden Boy Promotions,” said company CEO Richard Schaefer. “Mr. Slone is the new leader in sports art throughout the world, and having him involved with this mega event adds to an already historic night.” Slone has created two pre-fight paintings and will create his third after the actual where he will be doing sketches from ringside.

Slone’s prefight paintings include an intense “Stare down” painting, used on all events tickets and a full action painting titled “The One” which Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions simply called “A masterpiece”.

“It’s an honor to create art for this amazing event. It gives me chills to think these paintings will be part of the great history of boxing, like important fight paintings by George Bellows and LeRoy Neiman” said Slone at the unveiling. “Both of these warriors will be giving it their all. It’s going to be an all-time classic fight and I’ll try to capture that in my paintings.”

Slone’s pre-fight paintings of the unbeaten champions will adorn commemorative tickets and official fight posters. There will also be a special limited edition of only 75 museum quality fine art canvas prints. Fight fans who are unable to attend the live event but who wish to purchase the art, may visit www.sloneart.com

Richard T. Slone is the official artist of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and has created artwork for many major sporting and celebrity events. The list of his collectors reads like a who’s who of modern day icons, with prominent collectors such as Nelson Mandela, Donald Trump, Muhammad Ali and Hugh Hefner and many more. His artwork has become synonymous with boxing’s superfights. He has created official artwork for fights including those of Oscar De la Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto, Floyd Mayweather and many other stars. In the spring of 2013, Slone renewed a publishing deal with National Geographic that will publish his art in up to two million books. Collectors of his art range from celebrity clients, art connoisseurs and high-roller gamblers to a new generation of college kids who collect posters and Slone designed apparel.

Floyd Mayweather and artist Richard T. Slone unveil the painting in Las Vegas.

Slone’s portraits are also featured on the tickets to the record breaking fight.

DANNY GARCIA, LUCAS MATTHYSSE, ISHE SMITH, CARLOS MOLINA, PABLO CESAR CANO AND ASHLEY THEOPHANE DISCUSS THEIR UPCOMING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FIGHTS ON SEPT. 14 AT MGM GRAND GARDEN ARENA IN LAS VEGAS, NEV.

Danny Garcia
Kelly Swanson
Thanks everybody for joining us today for “THE ONE” media conference call with the pay-per-view undercard fighters. At this point, I’m going to turn it right over to our hosts of the call; that’s both Oscar De La Hoya and Leonard Ellerbe; Oscar is President of Golden Boy Promotions and Leonard Ellerbe is CEO of Mayweather Promotions. So I’m going to turn it over to Oscar, and then he will introduce Leonard.

Oscar De La Hoya
Yes. We are one month away from the mega event, “The One: Floyd Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez,” which will be a 12-round fight for Canelo’s WBC and WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight World title and Mayweather’s WBA Super Welterweight Super World Championship. We also have a tremendous co-main event, Danny Garcia vs. Lucas Matthysse, which obviously you all know that fight could have been a pay-per-view itself, but for the fans Mayweather decided along with Ellerbe and Golden Boy Promotions that this fight belongs on the big stage along with Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez. That will be a unification fight for the lightweight world title. Also, Mayweather promotions put on a tremendous undercard, co-main event with Ishe Smith vs. Carlos Molina. Ishe Smith is promoted by Mayweather Promotions. Also another spectacular fight with Pablo Cesar Cano, who had a tremendous fight against Sugar Shane Mosley in Cancun, Mexico a few weeks ago, is fighting against Ashley Theophane, which will be a ten-rounder in the welterweight showdown.

This event is being brought to you live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions along with Canelo Promotions. We are excited and thrilled to once again by hosting the live events throughout the MGM properties, which will host the closed circuits at ARIA, MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, The Mirage, Monte Carlo and New York-New York. Also, to make sure that fans get a unique experience nationwide, for all the fans who cannot make it to Las Vegas or watch it at home on pay-per-view, NCM Fathom will be showing Mayweather-Canelo on over 400 movie theatres to get that experience with other fans. Get your popcorn, your drinks, and experience this once in a lifetime opportunity to watch a Mayweather vs. Canelo and the entire card in movie theaters.

It’s a wonderful wonder experience. I really recommend this experience to anyone who hasn’t seen a fight. We’re expecting this even to shatter all records. We have broken one record already, which is the live gates and those are obviously indications that this event will break the pay-per-view record of 2.5 million homes so it’s very exciting for boxing. It’s very exciting for all the fighters, everybody participating so let’s show the world that this is “THE ONE.” This is the one that is going to put boxing on that worldwide stage and show everyone that boxing is the best sport in the world.

So without any further ado, I would like to introduce to you the CEO of Mayweather Promotions and that is Leonard Ellerbe.

Leonard Ellerbe
I’d like to welcome everyone to the call today. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to join us. We have a tremendous event, obviously, on September 14th and it all starts, with the Mayweather vs. Canelo. We have three other undercard bouts—two of those which are world championship fights, so we’ve got a total of three world championship fights on the card. This is the biggest pay-per-view card definitely that I can recall in recent history from top to bottom.

And to start off in the first fight on the show a gentleman, he’s originally from London, England. He’s now living in Las Vegas fighting out of the Mayweather Boxing Club, a gentleman that I just recently signed last week, a guy who I would say is the definition of what a blue-collar worker is all about, a guy who didn’t have it easy. He worked his way through fighting some very, very tough fights. He owns victories over Delvin Rodriguez who is getting ready to fight Miguel Cotto. He’s beaten a number of different top guys along with DeMarcus Corley who took forward 12-rounds. He’s just a very, very tough fighter. A guy who we’re very proud to have on our stable, so without further ado, I’d like to introduce Ashley Theophane. He’s 33-5 with one draw with 10 KO’s.

Ashley Theophane
It’s a pleasure to be on “THE ONE” card. It’s the biggest boxing event in the world. It’s going to be one of the biggest ever and it’s a big achievement on that. Leonard and Floyd have put me on the card and I’m looking forward to it. And for me, obviously, I’ve got Pablo Cano. He’s fought Erik Morales. He’s fought Paulie Malignaggi. He’s fought Johan Perez, Shane Mosley. He is a very tough operator, and I’m going to be in great shape, but to me every time he steps up is when he’s lost, and to me this is another step up, and he’s going to lose again, but I respect him. And I’m saying I’m going to be 110 percent ready, and I didn’t fly over here from London, England to take a loss, that’s not even on my mind. I’m training with the best in the world. I’ve got a great training team, and we’re going to be ready for “The One” and it’s an honor to be on the show with—you’ve got Ishe Smith who is world champ. You’ve got Danny Garcia who is world champ. You’ve got Lucas Matthysse, and then you’ve got the pound-for-pound king who is Floyd Mayweather himself so it’s a great card. It’s one of the best I’ve ever seen, and it’s going to break records.

For me coming from London, England it’s a very big deal. It’s all over the news in England that I’m part of Mayweather Promotions, and I’m representing the UK and at the same time I’m representing like Mayweather Promotions, which is the face of boxing. Mayweather Promotions is taking over boxing. They’ve just had their first world champion, Ishe Smith who is the first Las Vegas born world champ. So it’s great to be part of such a great team, and I have to thank Floyd and Leonard again for this great opportunity that they believe in me and I believe in me. So it’s just all about taking it to the next level and Pablo is the—he’s the great step in the right direction so I want to thank everyone.

Q
Ashley, can you just give us some perspective on what you already did, on you know how big it is to sign with Mayweather Promotions at this point in your career, and also, how important it is at your age to reignite your career against someone like Pablo?

Theophane
Well, it’s great to be with Mayweather Promotions at any point in your career if you’re just starting out, if you’re in the middle of it, or if you’re at the end of it. I’ve been a professional for ten years now, and to me it feels like the right time. Floyd has been a professional for years, for nearly 18 years. I’ve been a professional for ten. You’ve got to have been around for a long time. I still feel that I’ve got a lot left in me, another five or six years so.
I’m not worried about the age. I’m 32-years-old. I’m going to be 33 but if you look at the guys who Pablo lost to he lost to guys who were in their 30s so experience is a very—youth is good but experience at the same time is—you can’t buy experience and that’s what I’ve got. I’m a smart fighter. I’m a strong fighter. I’ve been in with like some good like boxers. There’s Delvin Rodrigues. He’s going to fight Miguel Cotto next. You’ve got Garcia – he’s going to fight Lucas Matthysse. I’ve beaten DeMarcus Corley. He’s fought everyone in boxing. I’ve been British champ so I’ve been around the block. I’ve sparred with the very best in boxing so to me I’m at a good point in my career, and I don’t want no easy fight. This is going to be my … fight. I’m training up with Mayweather Promotions. With them behind my back the world is my oyster and Leonard and Floyd both believe in me and it’s just up to me to do it in the ring and that’s what I’m going to do.

Q
Do you still believe that you could still win a world title maybe even despite your age?

Theophane
Yes, 100 percent. You don’t have to be a world champion in your 20s. Like there’s no age where if you’re 32-years-old you can’t win a world title. Ishe Smith has shown—he won his first world title—oh, I think he was 34-years-old or 33-years-old so it doesn’t matter because everyone they get their—because they get their opportunities at different times in their careers so the age is not an issue. I still feel good. I’m 32-years-old. I haven’t been in like many hard fights because I’m a smart boxer and I have a good defense. The age it doesn’t play a role. I eat well. I don’t smoke. I don’t drink. You don’t see me out in the clubs so the age is not an issue.

Q
And have you set a time limit on when you can—how long you want to wait to do it?

Theophane
Well, I’ve been a pro for ten years. I would be—I’m happy to be a professional for another five years so I’m cool. Floyd is 36-years-old now and he’s still in great shape. If he wanted to continue to go on like Oscar did with SHOWTIME he could. If you live the life you can’t put an age restriction. You’ve got Bernard Hopkins, he’s well in to his 40s and it’s not an issue. I don’t want to be boxing when I’m 40-years-old but I’ve set a goal. I’ve had 39 fights so I’m just focused on this fight and to get a win; that’s it. That is the most important thing.

Q
Ashley, when you look at your opponent he’s had some notable fights. Do you take that into consideration knowing that you want to make it big in the states and want to win, of course, a world title and not—as you just finished saying, you may—whether you said it or not you may be patterning your career under Mayweather and you want to have a world title before it’s all over. So what are you doing in consideration to prepare for Cano?

Theophane
Well, if nothing really changes I’m always in shape so it’s just continuing to put forth the hard work in the gym to do my runs, my swimming and stuff, and it’s all about just being focused and being smart. I’m not going to really change anything up. I’ve watched him fight in the past and to me every time he stepped up he lost. He may have 20 KO’s but you have to look who is he knocking out? He’s knocking nobody out. You’ve got Erik Morales. You’ve got Paulie Malignaggi, and you’ve got Shane Mosley so every time he stepped up he lost. If you look at the guys who I beat and you look at the guys who he beat there’s no comparison, so that is what you have to go by. But with every fight you have to respect your opponent, and I respect him because all of those fights that he stepped up he gave them a very hard fight so I expect a hard fight, but I expect to win as well.

Q
Boxing takes all of your life. Mayweather said—and I’m quoting Floyd Mayweather and I think he’s absolutely right because 44 tried and 44 failed. He said that, “Boxing is a 24/7 business not a 9 to 5er.” Do you believe in that concept?

Theophane
One hundred percent and you have to see that. I’ve been a professional for ten years. I’ve never had it easy so I had to go on the road. I’ve boxed in five countries. I’ve won in five countries, but I’ve never had it easy. For me I’m used to being in the backyard and having to fight the promoters’ guy and I’m supposed to lose and I win. So for me I’m used to doing it the hard way so to finally have a team to back me and believe in me that’s only going to make me a better fighter because I know that they have my back. So for me I’m just continuing to work hard and to even work even harder. So we have a young lion who may—he may watch me and think that I’m old now and it’s his time, but he fought that against the other three guys he stepped up to and he always was a bit short. He’s going to be a bit short again because I’m in that class where he stepped up. He is going to lose. It’s just how but I’m focused and I live the life. I don’t party. I don’t drink. I don’t smoke so I don’t put no limit on what I can achieve.

Q
Ashley, Do you have a weight at which you feel most comfortable and when you’re ready to fight for a title it’s just going to matter on the best opportunity or do you have a particular weight class in mind?

Theophane
Well, all through my career I’ve boxed being the junior welterweight and welterweight division so I don’t really like to restrict myself. It’s just on the opportunity, the opponent. I want to fight the best in the world in both divisions so I make weight like good so I’m okay. The weight issue is not a problem for me.

Q
Leonard, I just wanted to ask what caught your eye about Ashley that led Mayweather Promotions to want to sign him and put him on this show?

Ellerbe
Well, Ashley’s a gentleman that I’m very familiar with. I’ve been watching him work for the last couple months. He’s a guy that once I did my research on him—obviously, I had watched him in the Danny Garcia fight a couple years ago and it was a fight that I personally thought that he got the bad end of the stick. And he’s a gentleman that like I say he has tremendous character. I think that he’s had a tough road, as he just mentioned, with going in other fighters’ backyards and getting it done the hard way. So now with us—with him being part of Mayweather Promotions I think that we’re going to go out and create these opportunities, and he just has to go out and win. And I think that he will be a guy that the world will get a chance to see him on September 14th. He’ll put on a tremendous fight, and he’s going to make a lot of noise, and he’s going to be right there in the thick of things with the Danny Garcias and Lucas Matthysses right off the bat.

Q
My question for Ashley was I just was curious how he came to wind up in Vegas training at Mayweather’s gym and how he had kind of met them and wound up with them. I heard what Leonard had said a little earlier about seeing him and doing his research, but I’m curious how and when that Ashley ended up in Las Vegas working with Floyd and the gym.

Theophane
Well, it goes back to Cotto camp when I came over to Vegas because I was in New York. That’s where I normally train and I was there for like eight weeks, and I knew that Floyd was going to fight. I just thought that I would just come over as part of my camp and just do two weeks at the Mayweather Boxing Club. I came over for two weeks. Leonard and Floyd were very nice to me. The sparring there it was great. When I left back I wished Floyd well in his fight with Miguel Cotto, and then the next time came for the Robert Guerrero fight and I had other fight which was going to come up so I said I’ll go out to Vegas again, went out to Vegas for four weeks for this time. I was sparring with great guys, and I just liked the vibe at the gym. The Mayweather Promotions team was all like just friendly with me and I just stayed there for like the whole camp, and it just went on like this from there. So I think Leonard and Floyd just heard about the work that I was putting in the gym, and then I got to spar with Floyd and it was just step-by-step, bit-by-bit just keep working, the way I’ve done my whole career just putting in the work. Floyd and Leonard listened to what others were—like said that I was a good boxer and they got my record, and then the rest is history. I signed up with Mayweather Promotions to take it to the next level now.

Q
I have one other question for you, Ashley, and Leonard made reference to it in his comments about thinking that maybe you came out on the wrong end of the stick in the very close good fight you had with Garcia a couple years ago, which is really the first time he had ever faced what people would consider yourself one of the top guys in the weight class. I’m curious to see him in this undercard fighting in the co-feature and a pretty big fight. Do you feel like with a good performance on a card in which he is also features that you could perhaps if he does okay in his fight get a rematch with him like for the title?

Theophane
You know I don’t focus on one opponent because there’s many great boxers in the welterweight and the junior welterweight division, but if a rematch happens it happens. A lot of people thought that I beat him the first time around. To me it was a close fight and they gave it to him. It happens in boxing, but the fight could happen down the line. I thought I won the first time. I’ve watched him fight and he’s big so I’m very happy that he’s gone on to be a world champ, but I don’t think that he has improved much since I watched him fight. He beat Amir Khan. He beat Erik Morales, but other than that I haven’t really seen much improvement, but you never know. It could happen in the future. I just want to fight in the division, and I’m not just going to focus on one man. It’s whoever.

Oscar De La Hoya
Now I would like to introduce to you the other participant, which will be fighting Theophane. He has a record of 26-3-1, 20 KO’s. He hales out of Mexico, Tlalnepantla, Mexico. He’s one of the top hopefuls from Mexico. We would consider him a future world champion who is fighting the best and this is no exception. Theophane is a fighter who is going to bring his a-game and Cano understands that. He’s coming off two close decision losses against Paulie Malignaggi and Shane Mosley. Obviously, we know him making his breakthrough battle against legendary Eric Morales, and so he’s always here to put on a show. He’s in tremendous shape now. He’s ready to take the world by storm September 14th so let me introduce to you Pablo Cesar Cano.

Q
Pablo, what has your preparation been for this fight with Ashley?

Pablo Cesar Cano
I understand I came off two controversial fights, but I am preparing very hard. I am 100% ready and I am not looking for a knockout. I am just looking to make a great fight, and just give the fans what they want.

Q
You are very young. Do you feel that’s an advantage?

Cano
I believe it is an advantage however there are older boxers just like Bernard Hopkins that even though he’s at an older age he’s still very strong, very fast, and I believe age is nothing but a number, and I’m going to just give 100 percent and fight a great fight.

Q
Pablo, you’ve been in with three former champions and lost close decisions. Is there any concern that after this fight you could, at an early age, slip in to opponent status or more or less sparring partner mentality?

Cano
I understand I have been in three close fights with three great champions with great names and that I have gained a lot of experience, and with that experience I’m taking that in to account with my new plans. I’m just going to fight, and gain more experience there. I just believe that I am going to give a great fight.

Swanson
We will now make the transition to our next set of fighters and will turn it over to Leonard to make the introductions. Leonard.

Ellerbe
Mayweather Promotions’ first world champion, what can I say? A gentleman that has been the epitome of what hard work and dedication is all about. He’s a guy that’s been around the sport for quite some time. He’s had his ups and downs but he’s persevered. He’s a guy that’s obviously just not even a year ago was initially—you know got the opportunity to come in, worked with Floyd to help him prepare to get ready for Cotto, and he made the most of the opportunity because he’s a guy that we’ve been familiar with for quite some time. He’s been knowing the whole Mayweather family for a number of years. A guy that we know firsthand the kind of setbacks that happened in the sport and a lot of times it’s really about the right situation that you’re in to protect your best interest and he was a guy that we took under our wing. We got him an opportunity with “K-9” Bundrage for the world title, and he definitely made the most of that opportunity and the sky is the limit. He’s a guy, like I said, who represents not only Las Vegas with being the first born Las Vegas world champion, which is a tremendous feat within itself, but he’s a very, very proud champion. He understands what being world champion is about. He has a responsibility to that, and he wants to be the best that he can be. He’s a guy, like I said, I personally admire quite a bit. Without further ado, I’d like to introduce the IBF Junior Middleweight Champion, none other than Ishe Smith.

Ishe Smith
Training is going great. I had put in eight weeks before I suffered the cut to fight July 19th and we took a couple weeks off and got right back in the gym so training has been great. It’s just a fabulous, wonderful opportunity to be fighting on this card; the biggest card of my career. You know I’m not the main event. It’s just an honor. It’s just sometimes I just can’t believe it. It’s taken me 13 years to be on a big card, but I’m truly honored. I’m truly blessed, and I wouldn’t be here without God and just without him placing the right people in my life, like Mayweather Promotions people. It’s been a great ride. It’s been a real good ride.

Ellerbe
This next gentleman has been around for quite some time himself. He’s a guy that’s finally getting his shot after quite some time. He began making a lot of noise with his definitely heavily disputed draw against Lara in 2011. He’s won four of his last five fights. He has beat former world champions like Kermit Cintron and Cory Spinks with his only loss coming with a controversial DQ against James Kirkland in March of 2012. He’s a very, very tough competitor. It took quite some time for me to make this fight happen, and we were more than happy to put this fight as a world championship fight on the biggest card ever, and we know that Carols Molina—he’s a very, very tough fighter, and he’s coming to win, and his promotional company, Warriors Boxing, they’ve been behind supporting him, and, like I say, he’s coming to lay it on the line come September 14th. So, without further ado, I’d like to introduce Carlos Molina.

Carlos Molina
I’m ready. I had a good training. I was ready July 19th. We’ve been training all summer long and the best shape of my life. I’m just entering my time in my career. I just turned 30-years-old. I’m feeling great. I’m feeling my best and I am ready for September 14th.

Q
I have a question and maybe Ishe and Carlos you can both answer this. I’ll start off with Ishe. I know you probably would have liked to have the fight when it was originally planned on July 19th after participating in your training camp and doing all the things you do to get ready for the fight, but now looking back is it almost better for you do you think that this fight was postponed and now you get to be on a much, much bigger stage than you would have otherwise been on previously?

Smith
I think so. It’s a privilege to, like I said, to be on the biggest card of my career, bigger than any contender card I ever fought on, bigger than any show boxing main event, bigger than any co-features that I’ve been on. It’s a blessing. July 19th was because I work a lot with the youth out here in Vegas. I coach various sports, and I had a lot of people coming in town and these tickets are already sold out so it’s disheartening. Now I’m not able to have the people that can’t get tickets or can’t afford these kind of priced tickets to come see me fight but they’ll be tuned in on TV watching on pay-per-view. And like I said, it’s just an honor. Mayweather Promotions made sure that I get another date at home after this so it definitely is an honor. I don’t take it for granted at all.

Q
And Carlos, how about yourself? Like you just said you were going to fight the 19th on TV but not on a big mega card like this. Do you think from the way you look at it it’s almost better to be on this level of a show than had you been on that other card on the 19th?

Molina
Yeah well I mean like to me really it doesn’t matter where it is. I just want to fight. I want to fight for the IBF belt and wherever it happens to be—this happens to be an even greater opportunity I feel, but like I said it doesn’t really matter as long as I get the title shot and get that belt. But yeah to be on a big card like this and get all that exposure that’s definitely better.

Q
Well, especially because the main event happens to be taking place in the same weight class where you guys both fight, and certainly people will look at that main event, look at the winner of the fight between you two, and it’s certainly not out of the question if the winner wants to further unify the title they would have to see you. Do you think about at as a prospect of—it may be a long shot but—landing a shot with the winner against Alvarez or Floyd?

Molina
Yes, definitely. I mean right now, first things first is, Ishe. I’m ready for that fight. The belt, without that it’s nothing else but getting that and making a statement in this fight, and then being considered to be—being on the radar for these guys. If they don’t want to give me the fight right away I’ll be really—I’ll be willing to fight anyone. Just keep winning and sooner or later you might get that.

Q
All right. I have just one other question for you, Ishe. With regard to the cut that you suffered, how bad was it and how is it now?

Smith
It was pretty bad at the time, but we have great doctors. I was able to see a doctore here in town, and we did the right things we needed to do, and it’s healed up really well. I’ve been sparring for some weeks now and everything is going perfect, everything is great.

Q
Ishe Smith, I have been following you for years before the contender series but you remind me of a very young Sugar Ray Robison and that is the truth. I’m wondering how come after the contender you seem to fall off the radar screen and I didn’t see you for years and years until now finally Golden Boy—not Golden Boy but Mayweather Promotions finally put you where you belonged a long time ago. I see the emotion broke out of you when you won the title. Has it been frustrating all these years to finally come up in to a title owner and under the biggest fight of the year card?

Smith
Well, you know I think as a man I needed to go through those things. Those things you can’t predict life. Obviously, it’s not the way I scripted it starting off and then going to the contender, but things happen and I couldn’t be happier with my life where it is right now. I have some very important people that have helped me get to where I am today, and without them I wouldn’t be where I am, and that’s why I’m always grateful to Mayweather Promotions and everything that they’ve done for me. But you know this is the biggest card. It don’t matter what happened in the past. This is probably arguably the biggest card in the last ten to fifteen years just because of the main event and the co-feature so it’s a privilege and an honor to be on this card, and, like I said, as a man I think I needed to go through those trials and tribulations to be where I am today and I’m truly blessed.

Q
Yeah this question both of you can answer. Given your past and you both had tough luck stories—and Ishe, I thought you beat Fernando Guerrero by the way—knowing what you’ve been through, each of you, and knowing who you’re fighting has been through similar situations could this, for both of you, and each of you answer, be the most difficult fight and at the same time probably bring out the best in each of you? Can each of you answer that question?

Molina
Ishe is a pretty well-rounded fighter. I feel like the harder I train—it depends on how hard I train to make the fight easier for me, so I’m not sure. I can’t say something like that until I actually get in there and go through it and do it, but I feel like it is going to bring out the best in me because there’s a championship fight that I would have. Even though I train for every fight and I can pine for the championship fight this is it right here. This is what I visualized since I started boxing and it’s right in front of me, and I’m so focused. I’m so ready. I’m ready to go. I wish the fight was closer.

Smith
Whenever you’re world champion you know you’ve got a lot of people gunning for you and coming to take what you’ve earned and what you fought hard to accomplish. And I was able to do that in Detroit, and I don’t want to fall victim to looking past Carlos. He’s a tough competitor, and I’ve trained really hard so I won’t have any hiccups and I don’t have any trip ups. This fight we’re in tremendous shape and I’m ready to go, but I think it’s going to be a good night of boxing. Everyone on the card is going to be great from top to bottom, and I’m looking forward to putting on a tremendous fight for all the Las Vegas fans and all the fans across the world who will be tuned in on pay-per-view.

Q
One more question for Ishe. Can you address Carlos’ style? Have you faced anybody with guess awkward would be the best word?

Smith
I’ve faced all kinds of styles. They said K-9 was going to be too big and strong for me and he was awkward. You don’t worry about styles; skills pay the bills, and come September 14th I’ll be ready to go and I’ll be keeping my title here at home. I don’t worry about he going to fight. I just have to listen to my coach and go out there and execute the game plan, and I feel like the one fight I didn’t do that—where I didn’t listen to him was the only fight I lost and that was Danny Jacobs. But, as you said, I thought I beat Guerrero and since I’ve been with Eddie we haven’t lost a fight at 154 pounds so I’m extremely excited to be defending my title at home. To accomplish so much in my career in such a short period of time being with Mayweather Promotions and having this wonderful opportunity to fight on the biggest state in boxing is just amazing.

Q
Ishe, first of all you’ve ended up with an opponent who is, in my mind, going to be much trickier than K-9 Bundrage. Why did you select him as an opponent? How did that come to be? This is a fight nobody saw coming, and do you see any parallels between youself and Molina? You have had similar circumstances coming up.

Smith
He’s a hard worker. You can’t really say that he’s tougher or trickier than K-9 because K-9 was a world champion. Like I said, I don’t worry about styles. I just go in there and fight my fight. I told Leonard to make this fight. I fold Leonard when I won the title that he was going to be the first guy I fought. I didn’t have to make this mandatory until November but I respect his story. I respect where he come from, and I want to give the fans what they want, and I want to fight the best. That’s just the bottom line. I want to fight the best in my division and go out on top. When I retire I want to be talked about and I want to be remembered, and I think that’s what everybody wants in this game, and I think I’ve already left a legacy by being the first Las Vegas born world champion but it’s not complete. We still writing the script and, like I said, I’m excited to be fighting on the biggest card in boxing and I can’t wait to go.

Q
You’re a titleholder now. Have you changed any in your day-to-day approach to life or has anything changed in your mind or what you do or how you approach things in general?

Smith
You know you’ve become champion it just takes your training to another level because you realize you got guys coming for you. There’s not a week that I can’t go by without somebody mentioning my name so that all comes with the territory. I haven’t changed anything. I still work very hard. I still train hard, and I’m ready to defend my title and keep my title.

Swanson
Thank you very much gentlemen. We will now move on to our co-featured fight of the evening and I would like to reintroduce Oscar De La Hoya to make the introductions.

De La Hoya
It is very exciting to be introducing what we expect is an explosion come September 14th with two great fighters, and I am saying great because you have on one hand Lucas Matthysse who has a tremendous, tremendous record, an outstanding knockout ratio, 94% of his wins come by knockout; and on the other hand you have the champion Danny Garcia who is undefeated, 26-0, 16 KO’s who keeps on proving to every single person day in and day out that he is going to be great. He is going to be taking all comers. This is a fight that, like I said before, belongs on its own pay-per-view on any given day. This is a fight that the people have been waiting for. This is a fight that when you finish watching if you do not love boxing already you will fall in love with the sport because this is what it’s all about. Putting Lucas Matthysse against Danny Garcia in that same squared ring will be a tremendous, night for every boxing fan across the globe.

Let me introduce to you first—he is rated number one at 140 pounds by the Ring Magazine, has scored a staggering 94% of his wins by knockout. He does possess the highest KO percentage of any world champion in history, and has won six fights in a row by KO including his third round KO of Lamont Peterson on May 18th. He has a record of 34-2, 32 KO’s, Trelew, Chubut, Argentina, Lucas “The Machine” Matthysse.

Lucas Matthysse
Hi. Good afternoon. I’m here at the gym trying to train. We’re sparring and I’m very happy and pleased to be on this call.

De La Hoya
Now, I’m going to introduce to you a young man who needs no introduction. He is the unified super lightweight world champion. He first won his world title in 2012 by dropping then … legendary Erik Morales for the WBC 140 pound title, and, like I said before, he keeps proving everyone who has doubt in him—he keeps proving them wrong in every fight that he’s in. He has great knockout power but at the same time he does possess the talent of a boxer/puncher. He hales out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is the unified super lightweight world champion with a record of 26-0, 16KO’s, Danny “Swift” Garcia.

Danny Garcia
Hey. What’s up, everybody? I want to say good afternoon to everybody. I hope you’re having a blessed day, and I’m very motivated for this fight. I’ve been working hard in the gym, and I’m very excited for September 14th and it’s going to be another epic showcase by me that night.

Q
Lucas, what is your plan for this fight?

Matthysse
I am training very hard. It’s a hard fight but I’m going to give the fans what they want, and I’m going to bring the win to Argentina.

Q
Lucas, Danny Garcia as an athlete and as a fighter or are you going to go in to the ring and just give it your all?”

Matthysse
I respect Danny as a fighter. He’s a great champion, but I am going to give the fight 100%.

Q
Lucas, can you talk about what it has been like for you since you’ve signed with Al Haymon? Do you have this new sense that you’re going to be able to be in big fights such as this in your future?

Matthysse
Yes the plans are to have bigger and greater fights and to continue fighting.

Q
Danny, just from some of the stuff that I’ve read and some of the way your father has reacted I get the sense that he feels you’re not being as respected as a champion as you feel you should be and he feels you should be, and, in fact, that maybe you’re not being treated as or perceived as the a-side. Most notably, he talked about Lucas’ presence on the cover of Ring Magazine. What are your thoughts? What do you have to say about that and is that true?

Garcia
You know I really don’t care what the media thinks or who they think is the best because in my heart I know I’m the best, and I hold the titles, and September 14th is going to be another day at work for me, and I’m just going to defend my title. I’m still champion and the people who don’t believe hey that’s their problem. I know in my heart I’m the best 140 pound fighter in the world, and I’m going to show it on September 14th.

Q
Last question for you, that left hook sequence—where Lucas dropped Lamont Peterson with his left hook, and obviously Peterson landed his but it didn’t have as much of an effect. You are known as the left hooker. If that sequence happens in your fight can you kind of address what might happen? Do you think he’s seen a left hook like yours?

Garcia
We’ll have to see. I’ve fought big punchers. I took big shots before, but Peterson when he threw that left hook he was more in a position that’s why he got the end of it. But I’m just going to be smart. I’m going to do what I do best, make adjustments in the fight and get the victory.

Q
Okay. My question is for Danny Garcia; Danny, do you think that for this match the winner deserves the fight with Mayweather and Canelo’s winner? Do you think you are ready for the fight with Mayweather?

Garcia
It’s a big fight but I’ve got to worry about my fight. I’m not really worried about the future right now. My future is Lucas Matthysse and I’m not looking past him, but that’s up to Golden Boy and Al Haymon and whatever they want to do. I’m just a fighter and that’s what I do is fight, so whoever they put me against that’s what I do.

Q
Why do you think that the people doesn’t believe you after the many fights, many knockouts in favor of you?

Garcia
I really don’t know because I feel like I’m before my time a lot of people still don’t understand it because I’m not supposed to be here right now. It wasn’t supposed to be my time right now. I made it my time. I took it and the people still don’t understand it but I’m just going to keep building my legacy and proving myself.

Q
My question for Lucas is he had such an easy time knocking out Lamont Peterson, I wondered did he anticipate that victory was going to be as easy as it, at least, looked on the outside of the ring, and does he think that he can do something similar and make that kind of statement against Garcia?

Matthysse
Going in to the Lamont Peterson fight was difficult at the beginning but then it became easy for me and that’s why I knocked him out. With Danny Garcia, I have prepare myself but I believe that I’m going to do my best and just give a great fight.

Q
Do you think though that the end result could be the same, an early knockout because your power at least it looks so good in his recent fights?

Matthysse
I respect Danny Garcia as a champion. I am going to give a lot of resistance, but I feel that I am confident enough to give a great fight. It is going to be a difficult fight but I’m not looking for a knockout. I am looking to have a great victory and give a great fight.

Q
I have just one other question for Lucas. Some of the comments Danny has made—although he is showing respect for Lucas it doesn’t sound like he really thinks a whole lot of his punching power. He has said that he has a built up record in Argentina where he really didn’t fight a lot of top opponents, and then when he came to the United States and fought people like Zab Judah, like Devin Alexander that—the way Danny described it was as soon as somebody hit him back he lost, and that the record and the knockout power is maybe a little overrated. How does Lucas respond to that?

Matthysse
On September 14th I’m going to prove to Danny—That’s going to be the proof that when he feels my punches if they’re strong enough or not, and that will either give him the benefit of the doubt if he is strong.”

Q
How do you think the ambiance is going to be around Las Vegas? There’s going to be a lot more Mexicans than there is Argentinians. Do you believe the Mexicans are going to be behind your back?”

Matthysse
Yes. I believe the Mexicans will be behind me; although, there will be a few Argentinians there to support me and to see a great fight.

Q
If there is a victory against Danny Garcia what element will it give you with the Argentinian public?”

Matthysse
I would be on top of the world. The Argentinians will—it would be the best fight of my life.

Q
Hey, Danny. I know that you said that your job is just—on your team is just as a fighter but the reality was this fight was on the table for a while. How soon after your win over Zab Judah did you realize that you would probably be fighting Lucas Matthysse?

Garcia
I accepted the fight when he came to me. I think it was about five, six weeks ago, five weeks, six weeks ago. As soon as the fight was gave to me I accepted it but it took them time because the negotiations; you know it’s a big fight. It’s not an easy fight to make, and as my fighter I accepted the fighter. Me and my dad we accepted the fight and the negotiations—where the fight was going to take place, the money so it was a lot of things but the fight got done. I’m happy and then I’m happy to give the fans again what they want.

Q
I guess what I was trying to get at like when you—before you even accept a card do you have like an idea of who you want to fight next? I know you’re the type, you know I fight whoever they put in front of me, but obviously I know you always want to fight the best. Did you recognize Matthysse as the best of the lot and that you would have to fight him? Not that you would have to fight him but fight him to prove that you are the best.

Garcia
Yeah no doubt it was a fight that the fans wanted and the boxing world. He’s buzzing off his last two victories; his last two knockout wins so the fight was built up. Showtime made it big. The media made it big so it was only worth it to fight with me.

Ellerbe
I want to touch on to what Danny just added on. I just think this is kind of important. A lot of times when you have big events like this and obviously this is a main event on its own, but there was a lot of criticism coming Danny’s way, unjustifiable, by members of the media and the fans because obviously those out there who thought that Danny was unafraid to take the fight. But let me go on the record with this; I know firsthand. Obviously, I have a very close working relationship with my business partner and everyone knows who that is and we at least talk ten times a day. Danny and his dad, I know firsthand, have been very, very adamant that they wanted that fight to the point where they were bugging Haymon about making the fight. What’s taking so long?

I just want to be clear that this is a fight that Danny and his dad wanted from the very beginning. It’s just a matter of the things that take time for fights to come together, and it’s just not simple little things. Obviously, when you’re talking about large amounts of revenue and other particulars that come in to play because that’s great but you know fighters at this level there’s no such thing about being scared of one another. When it comes down to it nobody is scared to make money. Danny didn’t get to this level—his father is a tremendous trainer. They didn’t get to where they’re out—Lucas didn’t get to where they’re at—two fighters being scared of one another. This is a tremendous fight and this is the fight that the fans have demanded and both guys want to fight and it’s going to be a great fight come September 14th. I just wanted to add on the fact that I know firsthand that Danny and his dad had demanded this fight to the point where they were bugging Mr. Haymon about what was taking so long in getting this fight made.

Q
Danny, I know that you were ringside for Lucas’ KO Peterson and you’re a champion. I mean we all know that you have the ability and the goods to make this happen and pull off a victory, but I’m just wondering what you’re doing psychologically to prepare yourself because he’s a scary dude.

Garcia
I’m doing the same thing I always do, just training hard, and yeah he has power but I have power too so if he’s not careful he’s going to get hurt. But I’m not going in there worrying about another man. I’m doing what I do best and just training hard, staying focused, and adapting; adapting to the fight. I’m not going in there worrying about another man’s power. I’ve got power myself so I’m just going to go in there, make adjustments and get the job done.

Q
Hey, Danny. Was the random blood testing as a result of what happened with Eric Morales or is it something that’s related to suspicions that have crept up concerning Lucas’ camp or his results in fights?

Garcia
No. That has nothing to do with Lucas Matthysse. Ever since I won the world title, ever since I bet Erik Morales the first time, Amir Khan took the test, Morales took it again, Zab Judah took the fight and now this fight. It doesn’t matter who I fight for what it’s just something I feel needs to be done if you want to be the champion. And it’s my fourth defense and it’s the fourth fighter who has took the test; it’s just something that comes with do you have to beat the champion and that’s something I ask for. I just want a clean fight and that’s it. It has nothing to do with Lucas Matthysse. It’s just what I do.

Q
Hey, Danny, this question is for you. You’ve been in lots of fights. We all know this is not going to be an easy fight. Would you say this is your hardest fight up to date?

Garcia
I could probably answer that question after the fight because the fights not here yet. I really don’t know because sometimes the hardest fights—sometimes you think the hardest fights will be the easiest fights, sometimes you think the easiest fights will be the hardest fight. You really don’t know until the fight happens, but you know at this level you know you’re going to get hit. It’s all about preparing for the fight and making adjustments, and that’s what I feel I bring to the table.

Garcia
Okay. You know I’ll thank the media for taking the time out to ask these questions, and I’m very excited about being a part of this and I’m training hard. I’m very motivated, and I can’t wait to show my fans and all the new fans that are going to be watching me September 14th what I’m about and I’m going to keep the title in Philadelphia. I’m going to do this for all my Latinos around the world. The end.

Matthysse
I just want to thank everyone for their time today. I am training really hard in Argentina and will be ready for September 14.

Ellerbe
You heard today from all six guys who are fighting on the card, and we have, like I said, a top fight card, best that I’ve seen in recent history. We’re expecting great things. We know we have great fights, and the Matthysse v. Danny Garcia, like I said, that fight is fireworks all over. You have Matthysse who is known as—he has the most feared man out there in boxing today and we know that Danny’s a great champion and that fight’s going to come down to one guy trying to impose his will and the other guy doing what he does. I think you’re going to see a tremendous, tremendous fight in that fight. I think you’ll be able to see Garcia be able to do things that many people hadn’t seen him do before, and I think that you’ll be able to see what happens when Danny backs Matthysse up. All those things will be answered in that fight and come September 14th those questions will be answered on that night. And the fight before that we have Ishe and Molina; that’s going to be another barn burner, another world championship fight. Ishe is coming to win. Carlos is coming to win. It’s going to be a great fight, and to open up the card Ashley and Cano, both guys have never ever been in a not exciting fight.

From top to bottom we have a tremendous card, and we’re just really, really truly excited. Mayweather Promotions working with Golden Boy Promotions, Richard, Oscar and their great staff and obviously my staff and Kelly’s staff we’ve all been working together to make this a great night of boxing, and we look forward to all you guys continuing to support this event, and come September 14th expect a great night.

De La Hoya
Thank you very much. Guys, we have we have exciting news coming up in the weeks leading up to the event so we will talk soon, and we will see you soon. Thank you.

Thanks, but no thanks: Angel Garcia complains about a media gift that figures to motivate son Danny against Matthysse

Danny Garcia
It didn’t take long for Angel Garcia to erupt. He’s complaining to media that his son, Philadelphia junior-welterweight Danny Garcia, isn’t getting a fair shake in coverage of his bout with Lucas Matthysse on the Sept. 14 card featuring Floyd Mayweather Jr.-versus-Canelo Alvarez at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand.

It’s hard to judge whether his apparent anger is real or just an act. There are times when Angel Garcia, his son’s trainer, seems to enjoy throwing a temper tantrum. The more profane, the better. His insults and epithets before his son’s upset of Amir Khan in July, 2012 were enough to wonder whether he’s one of those Philadelphia fans known to boo Santa Claus.

But, come on, Angel Garcia shouldn’t complain about coverage that includes Matthysse on The Ring’s current cover. Angel Garcia, another in the long line of boxing dads behaving badly, should thank the media for a gift that allows him and his son to play the underdog, a role as effective as it is familiar to them. Now that Matthysse has gotten the glossy cover-boy treatment, Angel Garcia has a convenient target and an inexhaustible source of motivation.

Here’s a hunch that The Ring’s cover will show up, pasted onto Danny Garcia’s favorite heavy bag throughout the rest of training camp. It’ll probably make a good dart board when he isn’t training. Angel Garcia might cover the walls in Danny Garcia’s sleeping quarters with Matthysse looking down on him from several angles. Dad wouldn’t want his son to wake up and not be reminded of how badly his honor has been wronged.

It’s an old enough trick to be a cliché, of course. Still, it works. Bernard Hopkins is a master at seizing upon some perceived slight and turning it into controversy that seems to energize him and pay-per-view sales. Politicians use it to demonize their opposition. College football coaches call it bulletin-board material. But it’s the same thing. Alabama is No. 1 again this season, in part because Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban is more frightened of complacency than Georgia or Florida or Texas A&M’s Johnny Football. From Hopkins to Saban, it doesn’t matter whether the enemy is real or a mere straw man. It only matters that there is always some point to prove, some score to settle, some dragon to slay.

Danny Garcia, the grown-up in his relationship with a combustible dad, seems to have an instinctive understanding of the role. He has used it to fashion an undefeated record and ownership of two acronym-sanctioned pieces of the 140-pound title. Yet, he has almost become the understudy, the B-side to Matthysse’ starring role. Garcia addressed it in a matter-of-fact tone Wednesday during a conference call that did not include his dad.

“I’ll defend my titles and I’ll still be champion,’’ Garcia said. “The people who don’t believe, that’s their problem. It’s not supposed to be my time now. But I made it my time.’’

The twice-beaten Matthysse, The Ring’s 140-pound champ, is getting most of the attention and perhaps a nod as the favorite because of a crushing third-round stoppage of Lamont Peterson in May, the Argentine’s last outing. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer called Matthysse the next Manny Pacquiao. It made you wonder if Garcia was going to be the next Peterson.

A further complication, at least for Angel Garcia, lurked in media reports suggesting that Danny Garcia’s face was frozen in fear at the way Matthysse battered Peterson into submission. From a ringside seat, Garcia witnessed Peterson hit the canvas three times in the violent third.

During Wednesday’s conference call, Leonard Ellerbe of Mayweather Promotions dismissed the idea that Garcia has ever been frightened of Matthysse or anybody else, other than perhaps his dad.

“I know first-hand that Danny has been very, very adamant that he wanted this fight,’’ said Ellerbe, who was privy to conversations with Al Haymon, an advisor to Mayweather and Garcia. “Day-after-day, he was bugging Al Haymon to make that fight. Again, I know first-hand that they (father and son) had been demanding it.

“Besides, there’s no such thing as being scared of each other. Nobody is scared to make money.’’

But sometimes, just a little fear is powerful currency in its own right, especially if it’s a fear of losing. Matthysse was included in Wednesday’s call. But he refrained from saying a provocative word, perhaps because he knows Garcia has gained some emotional momentum in a controversy generated by a dad who has only begun to provoke.
