Training Camp Notes: Curtis Stevens

Curtis Stevens
Boca Raton, FL:
As Curtis “Cerebral Assassin” Stevens (27-5, 20 KOs) prepares to step into the ring against Patrick Teixeira (26-0, 22 KOs) on the HBO Pay-Per-View undercard for the May 7 Canelo-Khan telecast live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, he has a new trainer, a new nickname and new plan of attack.

Stevens, 31, originally from Brownsville, Brooklyn recently moved to South Florida and hooked up with elite boxing trainer John David Jackson. Jackson, a former world champion, also trains Main Events’ stablemate and WBO, WBA and IBF Light Heavyweight World Champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev. Curtis’ decision to move forward with a new trainer also inspired him to drop his “Showtime” nickname. He said, “Me and my uncle [Curtis’ former trainer/uncle Andre Rozier] isn’t working together anymore and ‘Showtime’ was a thing of the past ever since I was playing football in high school. It is time for a new era, new person, new identity. I am a wrestling fanatic so I get ‘Cerebral Assassin’ from Triple H. A cerebral assassin is very distinctive with his skill and I like that.”

Stevens and Jackson starting working together in February after Stevens spent time sparring with Canelo Alvarez while he prepared for his November fight against Miguel Cotto. Curtis said he learned a lot during his time at Canelo’s camp and that was part of his motivation to change his game plan. Stevens said, “Canelo told me to be more relaxed. We’ve got ten rounds to fight, so I don’t need to go in there and try to knock him out in the first like I usually do. Not every shot has to be the finishing shot.”

Jackson echoed that same sentiment when the two first got together. According to Stevens, “Mostly we are just working on me being relaxed. We are working on my slips and working on going to the body, me just using my speed and not just relying on the power. My uncle was more ‘go get ’em.’ John is like that too but do it in a calm and casual way instead of always going for the knockout. He is just more relaxed and wants me more relaxed.”

John David believes Curtis has all the tools he needs to be successful, but in the past he relied too much on his powerful left hook. Jackson explained, “Curtis can box. He just never used his full boxing capability. I am making him throw more punches, go inside and go to the body. He has a tremendous right hand. The power is still there but the delivery is better now. He has a great jab too. He has all the tools to be a world champion. He was relying solely on the left hook and when he didn’t knock the guy out he had no other game plan. Now he can break these guys down systematically and then knock them out. He’s listening but it takes time. I think he and I will need three or four fights before it really comes together the way it should but glimpses of it are coming now as we work together more and more.”

Curtis Stevens
OSCAR DE LA HOYA, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions:

He has a record of 27?5 with 20 knockouts, and that will be a ten?round career defining middleweight bout.

These bouts in addition to the co?main events between David Lemieux and Glen Tapia will surely be thrilling and action?packed, thus giving the fight fans what they want to see and that’s action. Tickets are still available, but they are going extremely, extremely fast.

Also I want to thank Casa Mexico Tequila as the official sponsor of Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Alvarez versus Amir Khan. And “Doom”,- Fight Like Hell on May 13th out in theaters nationally.

Let me take this opportunity to say a few words. It always is a pleasure to work with such a professional and great promoter that we’ve had for many years in this sport to introduce the first participant, and that is my friend, Kathy Duva.

NICOLE DUVA, Vice President of Marketing and General Counsel for Main Events:
We have a slight change of plans. Kathy had to step out, this is Nicole Duva, I’m the vice president of marketing and general counsel for Main Events, and I’m here with Jolene Mizzone who is our matchmaker. So if anybody has questions for Main Events, we should be able to handle it.

We’d like to thank Oscar and Eric for including Curtis on this card. We’re really looking forward to this fight. We think it’s going to be great. We think Curtis is going to perform really well. That sums it up. Okay, and with that, I’ll introduce Curtis.

CURTIS STEVENS, Former World Title Challenger: Good afternoon, everyone.

NICOLE DUVA: Curtis, can you say a few words before we get into the question portion of the call?

CURTIS STEVENS: Excellent card to be on Canelo versus Khan. My camp and I are getting ready, and it should be an explosive night come May 7th.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you. I’m happy to introduce to you for the first time on this card, this fighter who hails from Brazil, he’s very impressive. He’s ready to make his mark as a fighter who is ready to make a huge statement on May 7th. This fight is surely going to be an exciting one for the fans.

Let me introduce to you with a record of it 26?0 and 22 knockouts, Patrick Teixeira.

PATRICK TEIXEIRA, Undefeated Middleweight Contender: First thing, I’d like to say is I’m very happy this fight is in Las Vegas. This is my first time there. I’m working very hard for this fight. I’m looking to have a great fight that day.

CECILIA ZUNIGA, Golden Boy Promotions: Thank you, Patrick. I think we’re ready to start the Q & A portion with Curtis Stevens and Patrick.

Q. Patrick, your two fights this last year in the United States have been fairly spectacular knockout TKO victories. Was that important for you to put on a good show to get this kind of opportunity you have now against Stevens?

PATRICK TEIXEIRA: Those two fights were very important. They were two fights in the United States. They were two by knockouts and as a result of that I’m fighting here in Las Vegas.

Q. Will you be pressing for the same kind of result in Las Vegas, not just a win, but a show?

PATRICK TEIXEIRA: I’m preparing for a good, long fight. If a knockout comes, it comes, but that’s the consequences of all my training. I’m not looking for it specifically.

Q. Curtis, the inevitable question is I’m sure the question of ring rust since you’ve been out of the ring for a little bit. How are you working on that and do you have any concerns about that layoff time?

CURTIS STEVENS: Well, we know I haven’t fought within about a year has already passed. But I’ve been training in general just in case something did come up spontaneously, so I’ve always been working. But I’m a fighter. You’ve got to be ready at all times, so I just plan to go in there and do what I do.

Q. Curtis, you have been out the ring for a while, but you’re coming in against a guy who is a big puncher, young guy, hasn’t fought at the level that you’ve competed at. Have you seen Teixeira fight? And if you have seen him fight, is there anything that concerns you about him?

CURTIS STEVENS: Well I’ve seen the footage that they have shown. He punches in numbers is what I can see. He has a very high work rate. But what I’ve seen actually, the opponents that he faced were on last?minute notice, two weeks, one week. But he did what he had to do. But taking nothing away from him, he has great output.

But I’ve just got to be ready. Sometimes I wasn’t mentally in the game. I was always physically ready for it, but I wasn’t mentally there for the past two years, but now I’m mentally back focused again. So this should be a heck of a Saturday night come May 7th.

Q. You’ve been a contender for a while and you’ve been in with some good names in the sport. If you lose to Teixeira, are you willing to take that step back and become an opponent, gatekeeper type opponent, or do you view this as a do or die fight?

CURTIS STEVENS: To tell you the truth, I don’t have that on my mind of me losing, so I can’t even answer that question, to tell you the truth. I’m going in there to win. So whatever happens after May 7th, we’ll get to that point. I’m coming in there to win. I’m not thinking about losing or coming with the opponent or anything like that. I’m coming to win. I’m not coming to lose.

Q. Curtis, in your career, it’s never been a question about talent. It’s always been activity in the ring and letting your hands go. What are you working on in camp just to make sure you’re going to be active enough and letting your hands go in this fight?

CURTIS STEVENS: Not looking for the power so much. You know, we all know I have the equalizer going. Back in the day I just used to rely on one shot just to take you out, but just being more relaxed and not looking for the one shot. When it comes, it comes. Just getting back to being more relaxed and just having fun.

Q. Has that been tough for you to do, just because again, your identity has been to just knock people out with one punch and now to look at that, has that been a transition to make?

CURTIS STEVENS: No, no, not really. For the past couple years I’ve been going through a little something family?wise, so my mind wasn’t really in the game. I always was physically ready coming to fight, but mentally I wasn’t all the way there. So I thank God that everything’s been hashed out, and so I’m back in the game mentally and physically. I’m going to be well?prepared come May 7th.

Q. Do you want to explain whatever you were going through or is it just personal stuff?

CURTIS STEVENS: Oh, no, no. My son’s mother she ran off with my son and I couldn’t find her for about a year and a half, but that’s all out the window now. I have him back now, so I’m ready to go in there and put in the work.

Q. Lastly, Curtis, do you still have the same team behind you? Are you still being trained by Andre?

CURTIS STEVENS: No, no, me and my uncle took a little break. We went our separate ways. He still makes my hours though. That’s my uncle, but we went our separate ways.

Q. Who’s training you now?

CURTIS STEVENS: John David Jackson.

Q. And how is that going working with John?

CURTIS STEVENS: Everything’s good. Camp is going great. I’m in the gym right now as we speak. Chemistry’s there. Just putting our puzzle pieces all together so the puzzle can be complete for May 7th.

Q. How did you and John hook up?

CURTIS STEVENS: Well, we always knew of each other. I live in Florida now, so I came down to see him one day. We worked together. We’ve been working the whole of March getting everything together, and we make a good match?up. We just took it from there.

Q. Do you feel John complements your style just the way that he trains you?

CURTIS STEVENS: I’m not going to say he complements my style, but you know, he’s been a fighter. So a fighter that fought back in the day, he’s turned coach now, he see things that other people can’t see. So he’s making me more relaxed instead of making me more so much just going in there and kill, you know.

Q. Curtis, we’re sort of overlooking the fact that even though we haven’t seen you in the boxing ring that you were in the BKB pits not that long ago. Was that a weird transition for you and has it been strange for you after kind of becoming acclimated with fighting that kind of style and then coming back full circle?

CURTIS STEVENS: Yeah, like I said before, you’re a fighter. Whether it’s in a square, circle, triangle, you’re in there to fight. But the pit was a little different because you had no ropes to lay?up on. But that was a good thing for me, because sometimes I like to take a little rest on the ropes, but being that there was no rope you had to fight and figure your way around the ring or around the little pit so call it.

Q. This is obviously not the first time you’ve come off a layoff. Actually the last time you had a two?year layoff you went on probably the best run of your career. Did you learn anything about how to deal with the ring rust that we’ve been talking about that you’ve kind of implemented this time around?

CURTIS STEVENS: Staying active. Staying active because I remember before I used to just train when I had a fight coming up. But as you get older, you feel like you have to stay active. You have to stay active. So I’ve been in the gym all the time. I’ve been running. I’ve been sparring. I was with Canelo not too long ago getting ready for Cotto so I was down there with him for two months.

So I’ve been active still. I’ve been sparring a lot. Like me physically not being inside the ring without the head gear and 10?ounce gloves, yeah that’s true, but I’ve been in the ring sparring specifically since I haven’t been fighting.

Q. Do you think that the new environment with John David Jackson being down in Florida, do you think that’s helped you at all coming from where you were before to now being in the gym with John where he has other top level fighters, guys like Chris Algieri who is getting ready for a fight right now?

CURTIS STEVENS: When you’re in the gym with top fighters, the only thing that can happen is it betters you. You’re looking at what they’re doing. You’re taking a little bit from them and putting it and moving it into your own person. So when we’re in here all together, we’re working, we all watch what each other does and just take a little bit and we help each other out. When you’re a team, everybody’s got to help each other so everybody can be better.

Q. Patrick, Curtis is an experienced fighter who brings a lot to the ring, and this is a different level, something that you’ve never encountered yet in your boxing career. What can people expect in the ring on May 7th?

PATRICK TEIXEIRA: I clearly understand that it’s going to be a difficult fight, so I’m going to put all my resources together. I’m going to use the ring. I’m going to box. I’m going to throw hard punches and do whatever it takes to win this fight.

Q. Curtis, do you have any final words you want to address to the press?

CURTIS STEVENS: On May 7th, it’s on. It’s going down. This year I wasn’t going to talk too much about what I was going to do. I’m just going to get in the ring and show it. Just getting ready. I’m coming back. I’m not going by Showtime no more. Showtime is a thing of the past. So they don’t have to introduce me by Curtis “Showtime” Stevens no more, either. Okay, thank you, Curtis.

PATRICK TEIXEIRA: I want to thank everyone for the opportunity of this interview. Thank you very much.

CECILIA ZUNIGA: Thank you, we are ready to turn it over to Mauricio Herrera and Frankie Gomez.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Thank you. Now we’ll turn it over to Mauricio Herrera and Frankie Gomez. Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez is a fighter who is fighting undefeated (Indiscernible) 13 knockouts in the first three rounds or less. He has wins over Vernon Paris. He’s fought the likes of (Indiscernible) he’s fought the likes of Jorge (Indiscernible) in 2015. He is a decorated amateur (Indiscernible) in the U.S. In 2009 he won the silver medal in the World Championships.

He’s going in against a fighter who is experienced. Who is the true champion at 140 pounds with controversial decisions with the likes of Danny Garcia, Benavidez. Going up against the fighter they call the “People’s Champion.”

So let me have the pleasure to introduce to you first off Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera to say a few words.

MAURICIO “EL MAESTRO” HERRERA, Former WBA Interim and
current NABF Super Lightweight Champion : Hey, what’s up, guys. How’s everybody doing.

Q. Mauricio, can you let the press know any special opening remarks if you’d like to?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Just want to say thank you to Golden Boy and everybody that put this together because, man, I’m so excited and happy to be opening at the T?Mobile Arena and training harder than ever, because I can’t lose this fight. I’ve got to stay in this fight and keep proving myself. I can’t wait to put on an amazing performance.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: Next, Frankie Gomez to say a few words.

FRANKIE “PITBULL” GOMEZ, Undefeated Welterweight Contender: Hey, I’m Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez, 24 years old. I’m ready for May 7th.

Q. Frankie, I know in the past you’ve had some issues with weight and just staying in the best shape that you can for a fight. What do you think is different about this camp and what have you done to make sure that weight is not going to be an issue going forward?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Well, I didn’t blow up as much as my other fights. I stayed in shape. I didn’t go up in weight, and I’m training hard and just focused 100% on the fight.

Q. Have you had to make any big changes to your diet and just your habits in general just to keep your weight under control?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Yeah, the diet and stuff, but the most important thing was just that I didn’t blow up too high. I didn’t go over like 10 or 15 pounds. Because before I would go up more than 25 pounds, 20 pounds, so that was one of the main things.

Q. One of the things that Golden Boy was having you do was actually going to their offices and weighing in. Are you still doing that or is that something you did in the past?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Yeah, I did that for the last fight and it kind of helped me out. I don’t know that they wanted me to go in this fight. But even if they do, I’m ready. I’m like 9 pounds, 8 pounds away now, so just training hard for this fight and focused.

Q. Lastly, how excited are you for this opportunity again to be fighting on a major pay?per?view card against a good veteran in Herrera?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: I feel blessed and I feel excited. I’m anxious to go in the ring. I would like to thank Golden Boy for giving me the opportunity once again.

Q. Mauricio, you’re kind of the every?man in boxing. You’re the hard?luck guy. Many of the boxing media believe you won against Garcia and Benavidez. If you lose a hard?luck decision against Frankie Gomez, is that going to be it for you or do you continue fighting?

MAURICIO HERRERA: By hard luck you mean if I get robbed again?

Q. If you were to lose a close contested decision to Frankie Gomez, would that be it for you or would you still fight?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Oh, no, definitely not. First I’m not thinking that at all. I always think positive. No, I mean, I can go back in my career where I know many fighters would have hung up the gloves or given up or been discouraged. Getting robbed would discourage a fighter and even twice in one year.

So nothing negative has entered my mind. Since I started, I took lumps, I kept going, kept training hard. I love boxing and always kept doing it and thought I would get there once again. Nothing’s going to stop me, close fights, robbery fights, I’m headed to keep on fighting until I can’t anymore.

Q. Frankie’s a young guy. He’s never seen a guy with the type of craft that you have. You’re not just a good fighter, but you’re a crafty fighter. Do you think that he’ll be able to deal with what you’re going to bring and what are you preparing for against him?

MAURICIO HERRERA: I trained to throw guys like Frankie Gomez off, and a lot of the guys with big, amateur backgrounds kind of all have that basic style. I think that was one of the reasons I gave Danny a hard time is I don’t have a big amateur background, and I said at the time that’s what gives me an edge on these fighters that have the basic, one?two left hook. And the thing with me is not that I’m an awkward fighter, I think I’m at that age where I’m not the fastest guy, so I work everything on timing.

I think timing throws a lot of these guys off, and you can’t train for that. In sparring you can’t find guys like the way I fight. So I’ve always trained on timing. That’s been working for me to this day. That’s going to be a big part of this fight.

Q. Frankie, I’m going to flip that question around and Pose it to you. Mauricio’s a crafty guy. How do you prepare for a guy like that that doesn’t have a conventional style that most fighters walk into the gym with?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Well, I just train hard and I do what I do best. I don’t think I’m a basic fighter who just wants to hook. I come from different angles, and May 7th he’s going to find out.

Q. Now you’re coming in obviously your biggest fight that you’ve had so far in your career. You’ve had problems making weight. You’ve had problems in the past. Do you feel like if you come in and you don’t perform at a high level or get a win or at least look good in a loss, do you feel it’s going to be time for Golden Boy to cut its losses with you?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: I don’t think so. My mindset is not that. My mindset is going in there and win and give everybody a great show.

Q. Mauricio, how do you prepare for a guy like Frankie Gomez? What kind of sparring do you get?

MAURICIO HERRERA: We just like to mix it up with different fighters. We don’t know how Frankie’s going to come that night. We know he’s a strong guy. We don’t take anything away from him. I watch his fights and all the fights with fighters that I’ve had were tough fights. Even when he was going through round for Provodnikov (Indiscernible) we trained hard for that fight. We got some sparring for that fight. Even the sparring wasn’t as tough as the fight. The sparring ?? we thought we sparred two amateurs that hadn’t even had any fights yet.

So we don’t have to look for the toughest sparring for Frankie, but we do got to mix it up and find different styles in there. We always have to try to be ready for anything. We know that Frankie’s hungry. He’s a tough guy. I’m not saying he’s just a jab, right?hook guy. We know what he brings. He’s a tough, hungry guy, undefeated, so it’s hard. Those guys are the toughest ones to fight, so we come well prepared and we train for everything.

Q. I heard that you were sparring with Tim Bradley? Is that true?

MAURICIO HERRERA: No, no, I’m not sparring with Tim Bradley. I haven’t sparred with him in a while.

Q. Oh, okay. I was mistaken, sorry about that?

MAURICIO HERRERA: That’s all right.

Q. Mauricio, when you were offered this fight to fight Frankie, what was your initial reaction? Obviously he’s kind of a young, up?and?coming guy. Golden Boy has high hopes for him. Did you take any offense to the match?up and maybe the idea that you’re being matched against him to kind of help him take that next step?

MAURICIO HERRERA: No, because before the Matthysse fight got offered I was hearing around that they were wanting me to fight Orozco or Frankie Gomez. At the time I was kind of disappointed and angry thinking, hey, do I not deserve a more established name on a big stage? And kind of was angered about that. But when the whole Amir Khan vs. Canelo on T?Mobile in Vegas pay?per?view card came up and then they offered me Matthysse and it didn’t happen, I was disappointed because I was like that’s my luck. That’s the way my career has been going, it’s up?and?down.

So I didn’t know what they were going to do at that time or who they were going to find. When he mentioned ?? I gave them some time and they called me back and mentioned Frankie Gomez, I knew exactly who that was. And I said I didn’t even think about that. Frankie Gomez, he’s a tough guy, and that lifted me right up. I got real excited because I knew he’s a real boxer. I know he who he is. It’s not a cherry picking fight. It’s a tough fight. So I was like back in the thing on a big stage, so I was really excited and happy.

Q. Is it motivation also for you that you can kind of spoil what’s being looked at as a big opportunity for him?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Oh, yeah. I know undefeated guys the same as Mazion and Daniel, I’ve fought a couple undefeated guys. They come to fight. They don’t want to leave that. So I know Frankie’s going to be training hard and he’s going to be on a big stage with all the lights on so I know he’s going to want to perform his best.

I love when they come in 100% in shape; that brings the best out of me. That gives me a thrill that I’m going to fight an undefeated guy, and I’m going to fight my very best.

Q. Is there a fighter out there that you want to fight again? You want the match?up with Garcia, is there a fight you’re really looking forward to having?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Yeah, definitely. I’m moving up a little in weight, so I know a lot of guys who are 140 are moving up in weight to 147. So the match with Danny would be a possibility. That would be nice to fight him again. He is a world champion, so you always want one of those.

There is Jessie Vargas, another world champion. So I think those are fights that could be made. The fight with Jessie Vargas, that would be nice too.

Q. Mauricio, all the fans have seen frankly you get robbed several fights. I think many of the boxing media on this call would agree about those fights. I’m sure you feel that way. What’s been the fan reaction to you and what do they say to you after having seen Garcia and Benavidez? You just seem like the hardest luck guy in the world. Have they embraced you? Are they supportive of you? What do they say to you?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Yeah, definitely. Going through those kind of fights can bring a fighter down. Of course you get online and read what the fans are saying. They keep your spirits up, and I think that’s what’s been going on in my career. That’s what’s keeping me level and not think about those fights in a negative way. Not what could have happened or what could have been a different dream I would have had if they would have given me those decisions.

The fans embraced me and feel that I am a true champion and that I should be the 140?pound champion. So I roll with that and almost put it in my head like I am. I think that’s what motivates me and makes me feel like I am that guy. I don’t think negative, so I’m in the gym training, thinking about all that and thinking positive. Of course all the feather reacted positive with me. So I’m in good spirits and I feel like that’s what takes me through my whole training camp. But I think that that’s even with the Frankie Gomez, they know that I’m there to fight the best, and I think I get all the credit with true boxing fans.

Q. I wanted to ask if you could talk to us a little about your decision and moving up in weight and why you chose to do it?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Really I wasn’t really thinking about it too much. I’ve always lost a lot of weight to make 140. I could have easily gone to 147 a while back in my career. But I felt work hard and keep making the weight, there were a lot of good names at 140, so I stuck around for that reason. A lot of fighters are moving up and a lot of names are moving up to 147, and it so happens the Matthysse fight was going to be at 147. So it got me thinking at that weight class. When that fight fell through my mind was still on the 147. So I said let me just go on that weight.

I was already thinking about it and training for it so when Frankie Gomez came to me, I said let’s keep it at 147. So now that’s the weight we’re going in, and we’ll see how I feel.

Q. Frankie, were you in the Philippines with Roach and Pacquiao during his training camp there?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: No, I couldn’t make it. I couldn’t get a passport.

Q. Well, I was going to ask you how was it training with Pacquiao. But were you able to get any chance to train with him at all when he was in L.A.?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Yeah, well I sparred with the guys he sparred with yesterday. It was good. It was a good experience.

Q. Has it helped you to stay disciplined in making your weight?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Well, the guys I’m sparring with are pretty fast, so you have to be in shape and you have to be ready.

Q. Frankie, you have a great amateur career and you won World Championships as an amateur. But the transition, has it been difficult to make a change from the amateurs to the pros or was it the same as usual?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: No, I think it’s the same, just smaller gloves. More head gear, weight, the weight, I’ve been at 140 since 16, 17, so it’s getting a little harder for me. But I can still make the 140s. I know this fight is going to be at 146 and I’m ready. I’m ready. The weight is good and I’m focused and anxious to go in the ring.

Q. What are some of the recommendations that Freddie has made for you? I know you trained with Abel Sanchez and different trainers. What’s the difference training with Freddie Roach and has he recommend for you?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Just to work hard, stay disciplined. Stay in the gym, stay active, yeah.

Q. I know that you have a lot of friends that are all watching you from East L.A. You seem to have those fans go to all your fights. Has that always been the way it was for you even as an amateur?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Well, actually as a pro they get a little bit more involved than in the amateurs. We have a lot more stuff at the pro events. Yeah, I think at the same time my fans, they always show up and they motivate me.

Q. Do they give you tips because I know some of them are fighters too?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: Yeah, they give me tips, but they mostly just tell me stay in the gym, stay off the streets, stay out of trouble and stuff like that.

Q. Mauricio, this is kind of a follow?up question to what Mitch had been talking about. I heard that you would like to fight Garcia again. You didn’t mention Benavidez. If that rematch came up, that possibility, would you be interested? And has there been any discussion about it before now?

MAURICIO HERRERA: No, what I heard at the site is HBO didn’t want it, so I don’t know if maybe they were disgusted of the way the outcome was (Indiscernible).

Q. Yeah, because he’s moving up in weight too. So maybe at some point that one comes back up on the horizon. And I guess if HBO or some other network is interested in it, you’d be interested in it?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Oh, yeah, definitely. I’d be interested. At the time I didn’t care about it. I was disgusted with the decision. But I’m at the point in my career now that I’m just a little more loose. I should be really an angry person with all the stuff going on. But my life is together and I’m just like whatever. I’m going to do what I do, and people are going to see. They’re the true judges, so I’m happy with that. As long as they keep giving me opportunities, I’m going to keep training.

Q. I remember after the fight you were really angry and I asked you if you would be interested in a rematch? And you made it sound like let’s do it right now. So I thought it might happen in a few months, but it seemed to fall off the table.
MAURICIO HERRERA: Yeah. After the fight too it was kind of irritating me, and I didn’t even want to hear anything, you know. (Indiscernible) so the plan went off. But if he gets some more known names on his record and people start to know him a little more, I think it would make sense more. So that’s all I’m trying to work now.

Q. Mauricio, I know you’ve gotten angry after a couple of your fights. You’ve said robbed or lost close decisions. I’m wondering, do you get just as angry that people seem to only refer to you as a hard?luck fighter or the guy on the short end of six or the guy that got robbed? I’m asking you that because you were also the guy that beat Ruslan Provodnikov. How about we remember you as a fighter that’s beaten a guy who is still a huge attraction? I mean, does that upset you that people don’t remember that?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Yeah, yeah, it kind of does because it seems like my career and my timing was off. I didn’t have the best management at the time, and at the time when I began my career I had no trainer. I was training myself. So I’ve had to fight a lot of these fights on my own. I finally got a trainer for the name of Lee Torres for when I fought Ruslan, and it helped me a lot. And I got to that fight, and I knew what Ruslan had. And the thing was at the timing of the fight, I didn’t get no credit.

When I saw Ruslan and beat him, I knew that guy was pretty special, you know, and it wasn’t until he fought Bradley when I knew that people were going to know about him, and he did what he did, as you seen. But to this day a lot of people don’t know that I fought Ruslan and beat Ruslan, an undefeated and tough and intense Ruslan. I feel at that time he was more hungry. His style has changed a little bit, but they seem to forget, and it does get frustrating that I’ve only been known for the robberies, you know.

But there are other tough fights like Michael Alvarado who I fought and thought that was a close fight as well. There are plenty of fights that I had that people just don’t even remember me from the Danny fight. I started making new fans, and the true boxing fans did the research and they’ve seen my background. But the newer fans tend to forget some things.

But, yeah, I tend not to let it bother me.

Q. At the end of the day you know you beat that guy and these other guys. So I hope that gives you some comfort.

CECILIA ZUNIGA: Frankie, do you have any final comments for the press still on the call?

FRANKIE GOMEZ: No, just make sure you tune in May 7th for an exciting fight night, and thank you everybody.

CECILIA ZUNIGA: Thank you, Frankie. Mauricio, any final thoughts?

MAURICIO HERRERA: Yeah, I just want to say one thing. There are a lot of fighters out there that are fooled by my resume and my losses and my age. I think that’s the thing that’s going to be a problem when I go in that ring, because that’s really ?? they find out quick that I’m a guy who can handle myself.

I just want to thank Frankie for taking the fight. You’re a tough fighter, and I know you’re going to be in great shape and let’s give the people a show. Thank Golden Boy for putting it together. We shut down the L.A. Sports Arena and now we’re opening a new one, T?Mobile Arena, so let’s make this special.

OSCAR DE LA HOYA: We are looking forward to May 7th. Thank you for being on the call, all the press. We’ll talk to you next week leading up to May 7th, and finishing off our weekly calls with Canelo and Amir Khan. So, like I said, tickets are going extremely fast. Marketing starts kicking in in the next few days. It will not be one single soul who will not hear about the fight or know about the fight. So we expect a big turnout live in Las Vegas. So thank you very much.

Canelo vs. Khan, a 12-round fight for Canelo’s WBC, Ring Magazine and Lineal Middleweight World Championships, is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Canelo Promotions and sponsored by “Cerveza Tecate, Born Bold”, O’Reilly Auto Parts, Casa Mexico Tequila and DOOM® — Fight Like Hell on May 13. The mega-event will take place Saturday, May 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Currently ranked as one of the top middleweight fighters by the WBC and IBF, former IBF World Middleweight Champion David Lemieux is making his return to the ring on May 7 after a sell-out crowd at The Mecca of Boxing, Madison Square Garden in New York, when he faced Gennady Golovkin for the Unified Middleweight World Championship on October 17. Before his face off against Golovkin, Lemieux was coming off of his ninth consecutive victory over Hassan N’Dam in June 2015 and seventh consecutive knockout against Gabriel “King” Rosado last December 2014. The 27-year-old Lemieux was victorious in dominant fashion capturing the vacant IBF Middleweight Title against Hassan N’Dam on June 20 in his hometown of Montreal, Canada. Dropping N’Dam four times, the hard-hitting Canadian won a wide, 12-round unanimous decision. Lemieux made his HBO and United States debut in headline fashion with a fantastic performance stopping top contender Gabriel Rosado in the tenth round on December, 2014 in Brooklyn, New York. Now, Lemieux is ready to fight Glen Tapia in a memorable mega event in Las Vegas.

Known as one of the most exciting fighters to watch in the sport, Glen “Jersey Boy” Tapia will be looking for an opportunity to start off 2016 with a victory when he faces power-puncher David Lemieux on May 7. A professional since 2008, the 26-year-old is a tough fighter who has taken on some of the fiercest opposition in the sport, including match-ups against James “Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland, Daniel “The Rock” Dawson, and Michel Soro. One of the most decorated amateur fighters of his time, Tapia has competed for the NABO and USBA super welterweight titles. Now, Tapia has set his sights on becoming a world champion as he prepares for his fight on May 7.

Fan favorite Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera has established his reputation over the years with an old school approach that has seen him show off the technical aspects of the sweet science like few others. Throw in a warrior’s heart and the 35-year-old from Riverside, California is a must-see for all followers of the sport. Owner of wins over former world champions Ruslan “The Siberian Rocky” Provodnikov, Johan “El Terrible” Perez and, most recently, “Hammerin” Hank Lundy, Herrera’s only defeats over the last two years have been controversial decision losses to current world champions Danny “Swift” Garcia and Jose Benavidez. Now moving up to 147 pounds, he expects to be better than ever.

East LA’s Frankie “Pitbull” Gomez is known for his exciting style and powerful punches. He is the owner of 13 knockouts in three rounds or fewer and can also box, as shown in his near-shutout victories over longtime contenders Vernon “Ice Man” Paris in July of 2014 and Jorge “Pantera” Silva in October of 2015. A decorated amateur who won the 2009 United States Championship and earned a Silver medal in the 2009 World Championships, Gomez is ready to face the top opposition and chase his dreams of a world championship in 2016.

From Sombrio, Santa Catarina, Brazil and residing in Sao Paulo, southpaw Patrick Teixeira has paid his dues on the way up the middleweight ladder and after putting together a perfect record, the Brazilian star will take on his biggest test to date in former world title challenger Curtis “Showtime” Stevens. An active fighter who has competed around the world since turning professional in 2009, the 25-year-old will make his Las Vegas debut this May after scoring big knockout wins over Patrick Allotey and Don Mouton in 2015.

One of the most exciting knockout artists in boxing, Curtis “Showtime” Stevens hails from the same Brownsville, Brooklyn neighborhood that produced the legendary Mike Tyson, and Stevens, like “Iron Mike,” enjoys nothing more than a fast finish on fight night. Winner of two of his last three, with knockouts of Patrick “The Machine” Majewski and current number one IBF Middleweight contender Tureano Johnson, the 31-year-old former NABF middleweight champ can make his case for another world title shot with a win over Teixeira on May 7.

N’Dam decisions Stevens; earns Middleweight title shot

It was N’Dam that scored the only knockdown when he landed a short right hand in round eight that sent Stevens to the canvas. Stevens landed his best punch later in the round when he landed a hard left hook to the war.

N’Dam continued to win rounds by jabbing and moving. Stevens made once last stand in the 12th round as he tried to land a power shot that would turn the tide but was no no avail as N’Dam won by scores of 119-108 and 116-111 twice.

VIDEO: Curtis Stevens: Adding Speed to Power

Commentators and Undercard Announced for ESPN Boxing Special on October 1

Curtis Stevens
Todd Grisham and analyst Teddy Atlas will be ringside describing the action for ESPN’s previously announced ESPN Boxing Special presented by Corona Extra airing live on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2 and WatchESPN. The show from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, Calif., will feature a 12-round IBF eliminator between Middleweight contenders Hassan “El Fenómeno” N’Dam (30-1, 18 KOs) and Curtis “Showtime” Stevens (27-4, 20 KOs). The winner of the bout will earn the right to fight for the IBF Middleweight title, currently held by Australia’s Sam Soliman. The card is promoted by King Sports.

ESPN Deportes’ Noche de Combates presentado por Corona Extra will also present the card live on broadband Spanish-language ESPN Deportes+ and will televise the card on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 10 p.m. on ESPN Deportes. Pablo Viruega and analyst Delvin Rodríguez will call the fights for Noche de Combates, while Claudia Trejos and Leopoldo González will anchor the studio. Bi-lingual reporter Bernardo Osuna will present live reports and interviews for both ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes.

Main Event:
France’s N’Dam, a former Middleweight titlist, has won his last three fights, including a 10-round unanimous decision win over Fulgencio Zuniga in April.

“I think Curtis Stevens is a great fighter – he’s unbelievably strong and can knock you out with either hand. But, I think he’s limited when it comes to fighting a boxer like Hassan,” said N’Dam’s manager Gary Hyde. “I think the key to this fight is just Hassan being himself. He’s got lovely lateral movement and he’s a fantastic boxer. He’s got the Ali-Leonard style, and that’s what he should stick with against Stevens.”

Brooklyn, N.Y.’s Stevens, who challenged current Middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin for his belt in 2013, has won his last two fights and is coming off a 10th-round TKO win over 2008 Olympian Tureano Johnson.

“I really expect Curtis to be super explosive,” said Stevens’ trainer Andre Rozier. “He knows that this is a title eliminator which will bring him to fighting the winner of the Jermain Taylor-Sam Soliman fight. So he’s literally right back in the title hunt with two steps to go – two really very short steps. I think we’re going to see a very explosive performance that ends in a big knockout.”

Co-Feature:
Wednesday’s 10-round co-feature will pit undefeated Welterweight Fredrick “General Okuna” Lawson (22-0, 20 KOs) of California against New York’s Ray “The Emperor” Narh (26-5, 21 KOs). In his last outing, Lawson scored a sixth-round TKO win over Mohamed Kayongo, while Narh is looking to rebound from a 10-round split decision loss to Chris van Heerden.

Opening Fight:
Wednesday’s show will open with an eight-round bout between undefeated Featherweight Miguel Marriaga (18-0, 16KOs) of Colombia and California’s Chris Martin (28-3-3, 9 KOs).

Stevens-Johnson Scouting Report: Can Johnson Stand Toe-to-Toe with Stevens?

Curtis Stevens
Philadelphia, PA: Tonight when Curtis “Showtime” Stevens (26-4-0, 19 KOs) of Brooklyn, NJ and undefeated Tureano Johnson (14-0, 10 KOs) of Nassau, Bahamas square off at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, boxing fans will find out if Tureano can live up to all the smack talk he was throwing in Curtis’ direction at Wednesday’s press conference. Johnson said, “Come Friday night someone is going to get bitch-slapped. I am going to enjoy this but I cannot say the same for him. Let’s pray I don’t put him in the hospital.” Below is the scouting report for tonight’s ten round middleweight match-up between Curtis “Showtime” Stevens and Tureano Johnson:

Category
Curtis “Showtime” Stevens
Tureano Johnson
Age
29
30
Record
26-4-0, 19 KOs
14-0-0, 10 KOs
Strength
Stevens has one punch power.
Johnson has an undefeated record and a strong amateur background
Weakness
Curtis doesn’t perform as well in the ring with a boxer.
Tureano has only fought lesser competition.
Experience
Stevens had over 300 amateur fights.
Johnson spent most of his amateur career in Cuba with top prospects. He also competed in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Power
The edge here goes to Curtis because he has power in both hands.
If Johnson puts his punches together he has decent power.
Speed
Curtis puts his combinations together well.
The edge goes to Tureano with regards to speed.
Endurance
The edge here goes to Stevens because he has been 12 rounds once (Jan. 29, 2010 – unanimous decision loss to Jesse Brinkley) and 10 rounds three times (Jun. 16, 2007 unanimous decision loss to Andre Dirrell; Mar. 22, 2007 unanimous decision win over Darnell Boone; and Dec. 1, 2006 unanimous decision win over Dhafir Smith).
Johnson has never been past eight rounds. In his last fight which was against an undefeated fighter, he defeated Willie Fortune, Feb. 22, 2013, via unanimous decision. This was his only eight round fight.
Accuracy
The edge here also goes to Curtis because he puts his punches together and he has a jab.
Johnson tends to be a bit wild.
Defense
Even money with regards to defense because Curtis tends to leave himself open.
Both fighters are straight forward and for both their biggest attribute is their offense.
Chin
The edge here goes to Curtis who has been down and has gotten back up.
Johnson has never been down so there is a question about how he will react if Curtis knocks him down.
Style
Curtis comes out. He is the finisher and is going to come right at his opponent. If he hurts his opponent he is going to finish him. He fights like it’s personal.
If Tureano hurts Curtis will he know how to finish him? It is unsure whether or not he has that killer instinct.
Intangibles
Stevens didn’t need to take this fight. He could have waited for a more established opponent. He took a fight with the first guy that wanted to get in the ring with him. He is a fighter.
Johnson wanted this fight when other guys won’t dare get in the ring with Curtis. He was talking smack during the press conference so he is trying to win the fight before he gets in the ring
The Match-Up
Curtis could have decided to sit and wait for the big fight but instead he decided to take on an undefeated prospect which is dangerous. Johnson could have gone on fighting lower class boxers and padded his record. If Johnson beats Stevens it would put him right in the top ten mix in the middleweight division
1. If Tureano Johnson decides to go out there and box will Curtis Stevens be able to cut off the ring and do what he does best?
2. Johnson has never been down in his career if Curtis knocks him down how will he react?
3. Is Stevens overlooking this fight and looking to the bigger fights?
4. Will Johnson’s amateur experience benefit him in this fight?

Curtis Stevens replied to Johnson by simply saying, “I will go in there just take care of business. Yes, he’s undefeated but he’s fought 14 softies. This time he is going to be in there with the real thing.”

Main Events’ Matchmaker Jolene Mizzone said, “Tonight’s fight says a lot about both these guys. Curtis could have decided to sit back and wait for the big fight. Tureano Johnson took the biggest step up in his career by finally getting in the ring with a fighter of Curtis’s caliber. He could possibly lose his undefeated record.”

Kathy Duva, Main Events’ CEO said, “Curtis is a fighter; he wants to be in the ring. He took this fight even though he didn’t have to. Johnson will find out tonight if he belongs among the elite middleweights.”

Showtime is Rested and Ready to Take on Johnson

Curtis Stevens
Philadelphia, PA: Curtis “Showtime” Stevens took a relaxing vacation after his first round knockout of Patrick “The Machine” Majewski on January 24 at Resorts in Atlantic City, NJ and now he is faster, stronger, rested and ready to take on Tureano Johnson Friday, April 4 at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA. Stevens, who vowed to stay busy this year, spent two weeks in Mexico and Jamaica following his fight at Resorts. However, even while he was having fun in the sun, he stayed in constant contact with Main Events’ Matchmaker Jolene Mizzone, “While I was away Jolene kept in contact with me. She asked me if I wanted to fight and I told her I was off for two years so now I want to get right back into it. I wasn’t playing around.”

Stevens, 29, just moved to a new place on the water in Queens and has been running stairs and on the beach as part of his new conditioning regime. He said, “I feel good. I have been training very hard. We wanted to make my legs stronger so I can get lower and weave his shots.” However, Curtis does not think Tureano Johnson is going to be a problem for him. When asked about Johnson he said, “This guy likes to fight. He slaps a lot. He’s got looping shots. But don’t leave your seat when the TV lights come on because you might miss it. Don’t blink. Have your popcorn and your soda ready beforehand because I am about to put on a spectacular showcase come April 4.”

When asked about fighting in Philadelphia, the Brooklyn native said, “Philly is the boxing capital so I am really excited to be fighting there. They like to fight in Philly and I love that. I have a lot of fans in Philly. I grew up with Karl ‘Dynamite’ Dargan, we were in the amateurs together, so I know all of his family. A lot of my fans from New York and Brooklyn are going to come out there and make the drive to show their support but I have fans in Philly too.”

This will be Showtime’s fifth Fight Night appearance and he is undefeated on the program (first round KO of Patrick Majewski on Jan. 24, first round KO of Saul Roman on August 3, 2013, eighth round UD over Derrick Findley on April 20, 2013 and first round KO of Elvin Ayala on January 19, 2013). When asked about fighting on Fight Night, Stevens replied, “I love NBC Sports. I love NBC because the world gets to see me. I am grateful to them for giving me the opportunity to perform for the whole world. Me and Cunningham were on Fight Night together when he fought Tyson Fury and I beat Derrick Findley so I am glad we get to share the spotlight again on Fight Night April 4.”

Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva said, “I love Curtis’ attitude. There are few things better for a promoter than a fighter who will fight anyone, anywhere, anytime. Curtis has the heart of a champion, even if he doesn’t have that belt just yet.”

Jolene Mizzone, Main Events’ matchmaker said, “Fighting an up-and-coming undefeated opponent is always dangerous for a fighter so Curtis needs to be on point in order for him to get closer to a world title fight.”

Philadelphia’s own Khalib Whitmore (5-0, 4 KOs) is also scheduled for a four round light heavyweight fight but his opponent is still to be determined.

Main Events’ matchmaker Jolene Mizzone said, “This card is a diverse mix of seasoned opponents and up-and-comers. These up-and-comers will have to step up against tough competition in order to move forward. TUREANO JOHNSON LOOKS TO GO TO WAR WITH STEVENS

New Jersey (March 24, 2014) – Gary Shaw Productions undefeated middleweight contender, Tureano Johnson (14-0, 10 KOs) is training hard for his upcoming bout with Curtis “Showtime” Stevens (26-4-0, 19 KOs) taking place at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA on Friday, April 4th. Johnson vs. Stevens, a ten-round bout, will be will be televised on NBCSN “Fight Night” as the co-feature to Steve “USS” Cunningham (26-6-0, 12 KOs) vs. Amir “Hardcore” Mansour (20-0-0, 15 KOs).

Johnson, who resides in Hollywood, Florida, by way of Nassau, Bahamas, was part of the 2008 Bahamas Olympic Team. After having a decorated amateur career in which he worked alongside the Cuban National Team for the eight years, Johnson has developed into an outstanding professional, winning convincingly in all of his fourteen pro fights. He feels confident in his ability to defeat Stevens, who’s ranked #11 by the WBC and IBF.

“I would like to thank my promoter, Gary Shaw, for making this fight possible. On April 4th, the world will be introduced to Tureano Johnson. This has been a long, hard road for me filled with blood, sweat, and ruthless determination. I have been begging for this opportunity to pit my skills against the so-called best in my division. However, it is easier said than done in this world of boxing. No one would fight me until now. I respect Curtis Stevens. He is a strong, hard-punching fighter who has been in with the best. But he can’t and won’t beat me. To all the fans, don’t miss this fight on NBC Sports. I’m sure it is going to be a throw-back fight. It has been said that I’m not the most “technical” fighter out there. Well it’s true. I like to mix it up, throw hard punches, and get a little barbaric in the ring. I’m coming to fight and win impressively. After April 4th, I know I will get the fights I deserve.” said Johnson.

One of the best fighters to ever come from the Bahamas, Johnson will have to shake off the rust, being that he’s been out of the ring for over a year.

“The long layoff will finally be coming to an end and it won’t be a problem. I’ve had so many fights as an amateur that boxing is like riding a bike for me. I’ll know what to do as soon as I step in the ring. My body is well rested and I’ll be 100% healthy going into this fight.” Johnson concluded.

Promoter Gary Shaw feels Johnson is a star in the making as he stated, “Tureano Johnson is a very special fighter with an incredible work ethic. With that being said, he’ll have every opportunity to showcase his skills on the big stage. Against Stevens, I expect he’ll be tested, but I know he’ll adapt to anything he brings, and win the fight. This will be another excellent fight, one the fans will not want to miss.”

Showtime is Back! Stevens Will Take On Tureano Johnson in Co-Feature Friday, April 4th at the Liacouras Center on NBCSN Fight Night

Curtis Stevens
Philadelphia, PA: Less than three months after middleweight Curtis “Showtime” Stevens (26-4-0, 19 KOs) knocked out Patrick Majewski in the first round at Resorts International Casino and Hotel, he will take on the undefeated Tureano Johnson (14-0-0, 10 KOs) at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, PA on Friday, April 4th. The Stevens-Johnson ten round fight will be the co-feature on the NBCSN Fight Night card that features the heavyweight showdown between Steve “USS” Cunningham (26-6-0, 12 KOs) and Amir “Hardcore” Mansour (20-0-0, 15 KOs).

Stevens, who just celebrated his 29th birthday on March 10th, vowed to stay busy this year, “This is my life and my job. I like to fight and I don’t want to have a break too long. I could get a little bit too relaxed. Hopefully I can go six times this year.” “Showtime” fought four times in 2013 with a 3-1 record with two knockouts. And after his first round knockout of Majewski on January 24th he is ready for Johnson, “I am back to the old Curtis. It looks like he likes to fight. He likes to stay in the paint, in the dog house and get it on. He looks like a more aggressive Derrick Findley so this fight I might just stay toe-to-toe.”

Hall of Fame matchmaker, J Russell Peltz said this about the match-up: “This fight features Curtis Stevens, one of the most exciting middleweights in the division. It is going to be an explosive fight!” Main Events’ CEO Kathy Duva said, “We love Curtis. NBC loves Curtis. Everyone is thrilled that he’ll be back on Fight Night so quickly. Johnson fought on the undercard of one of our Fight Night cards (Adamek vs Chambers at the Prudential Center on June 16, 2012) and I was impressed by what I saw. This should be a good one.”

Johnson, 30, originally from Nassau, Bahamas, defeated Willie Fortune via unanimous decision in his last fight at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in Cabazon, CA on February 22, 2013. Tureano has only had three fights go the distance in his career (all unanimous decision wins) and has a 71% knockout-to-win percentage. However, Stevens is not intimidated, he said, “He has a lot of knockouts but when you check the guys that he has knocked out its guys with records that are like 6-30. That is what he is supposed to do. If he wasn’t knocking them out I believe that would be a problem.”

This will be Johnson’s first ten round fight. This will also be Johnson’s first fight as a co-feature on a national broadcast. He said, “I would like to thank Main Events and my promoter, Gary Shaw, for making this fight possible. On April 4th, the world will be introduced to Tureano Johnson. This has been a long, hard road for me filled with blood, sweat and ruthless determination. I have been begging for this opportunity to pit my skills against the so-called best in my division. “Showtime” is training for this fight in his hometown of Brooklyn, NY. He said, “I like training in Brooklyn because I am more comfortable. It is home to me; my mind is clearer when I am around positive energy. I can’t be too secluded and bored. I need to be around family and friends. So I can just go about my day as regular as possible. It is best to just keep home and have fun.”

Stevens destroys Majewski in 46 seconds

Curtis Stevens
Former world title challenger Curtis Stevens showed no ill effects of his title losing effort to Gennady Golovkin, needed just 46 seconds to obliterate Patrick Majewski at the Resorts Casino in Atlantic City.

It was ominous from the first punch for Majewski as he was dropped by a non-descript jab. Clearly hurt, Stevens dropped Majewski for a 2nd time after a barrage of punches that was finished off by a left hook. The fight was finished when another flurry of punches landed that sent Majewski down for a 3rd and final time.

Stevens, 161 1/2 lbs is now 26-4 with 19 knockouts. Najewski, 160 1/2 lbs of Atlantic City is now 21-3.

Hasan Young scored four knockdowns en route to a six round unanimous decision over Justin Johnson in a Welterweight bout.

Young scored two knockdowns in round two, one in round’s five and six and cruised to the victor by scores of 60-50 twice and 60-51.

Young, 141 lbs is 5-1-1. Johnson, 141 1/2 lbs is now 6-6-4.

STEVENS – MAJEWSKI FINAL PRESSER QUOTES

tlantic City, NJ: This afternoon five fighters joined Main Events CEO Kathy Duva center stage to discuss Friday night’s fight on NBCSN Fight Night live from Resorts Casino and Hotel. Main event fighters Curtis “Showtime” Stevens and Patrick “The Machine” Majewski were joined by co-feature combatant Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu. Mchunu’s opponent Olanrewaju “God’s Power” Durodola was not present because weather complications delayed his flight. Undercard fighters Ilshat “The Sheriff” Khusnulgatin and Robert Acevedo also participated live via Ustream to discuss Friday night’s big event.

You can view the press conference online at http://www.ustream.tv/mainevents.

The top quotes and press conference Q&A are highlighted below.

Patrick Majewski: “This is my shot in the middleweight division, to start existing in the middleweight division. Curtis Stevens is a known fighter. I’m not yet. To be known I have to pass through him. I am ready to get it on.”

Patrick Majewski

Kathy Duva, Main Events CEO: “Curtis . . . proved in (the Gennady Golovkin) fight that he belongs in . . .the elite of the middleweight division. And he made it clear to us that he wanted to get back in the middleweight title picture as soon as possible. This one really should be a brawl.”

Curtis Stevens: “Come Friday it is my road to redemption. I just have to go in there and not think so much and let my hands go. Friday starts my way back to the top of the elite in the middleweight division.”

Kathy Duva, Main Events CEO, speaking of Mchunu – Durodola fight:
“This is the kind of fight that I am really proud of. We are going to be able to introduce this division to the boxing world and to the casual fans. I think everyone is going to be richer for it.”

“I think that the winner of this fight in particular, and maybe even the loser, are going to be factors in the cruiserweight division for a long time.”

Thabiso Mchunu: “I am ready to go. . .My opponent has quite a good record and I hope he is ready for what I am going to bring for him. I hope to put on a good show . . . on Friday night.”

PRESS CONFERENCE Q&A
Question for Patrick Majewski: Do you think that you are prepared for Curtis Stevens’ power?

Patrick: “I don’t think, I know! When I agreed to this fight I knew what he is capable of. I better be ready and I am feeling ready.”

Question for Curtis Stevens: Sometimes people historically have letdowns in a comeback fight. You just lost a big fight to Gennady Golovkin do you feel prepared to win this fight?

Curtis: “Well if I wasn’t prepared I wouldn’t have taken the fight. I just came off a loss so why would I want to lose again? I trained very hard. Like I said before I thought a little too much in my first title match. I overthought and not reacted so my job is no thinking just reacting.”

Question for Curtis Stevens: Do you think you should have picked an easier fight for your comeback fight?

Curtis: “Nothing is easy. Waking up in the morning isn’t easy. Walking out of my building isn’t easy. I didn’t sign up for nothing easy. I am a top elite middleweight and once again if I am going to be middleweight champion of the world so why not take an elite fighter on like Majewski. I am sure ready to be back where I am supposed to be.”

Question for Thabiso Mchunu: They say Durodola’s name is “God’s Power” how will you combat this power?

Thabiso: “Well I can also punch myself. Believe me I can punch harder than he can. I am a smart boxer and I believe in my boxing ability more than my power but I can also punch.”

VIDEO: Curtis Stevens “A Day in the Life” Training Camp Video

STEVENS READY TO RESUME MIDDLEWEIGHT CLIMB AGAINST MAJEWSKI

Curtis Stevens
ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Middleweight contender Curtis “Showtime” Stevens, 25-4, 18 KOs, may have lost his last bout, a middleweight title challenge against the top 160-pounder in the world, Pound-for-Pound contender, and undefeated champion, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, but the Brooklyn-born knockout artist is ready to go right back to work Friday night in Atlantic City, NJ against tough Patrick “The Machine” Majewski, 21-2, 12 KOs.

Their ten-round middleweight fight at Resorts International Casino Hotel, is the feature bout on the season-opener of the popular nationally televised boxing series, Fight Night, on NBCSN. Also on the broadcast, which begins at 10:00 PM ET/7:00 PM PT, is a ten-round cruiserweight battle between Thabiso Mchunu, 13-1, 9 KOs, of Natal, South Africa, and Olanrewaju Durodola, 15-1, 14 KOs, of Lagos, Nigeria, in West Africa.

Curtis Stevens
Stevens, with his reputation as a big puncher, has been a fan favorite over the past few years, when his showy displays of power toppled excellent opponents like Saul Roman, Elvin Ayala and Romaro Johnson. So devastating is his punch that finding an opponent who can last more than a single round has been an issue of late. Since 2010, only Derrick Findley managed to last the full distance with Stevens.

Atlantic City’s Patrick Majewski, who is renowned for his chin and a high-pressure style that is not so different from Golovkin’s, should provide Stevens with a serious test in the wake of that world title bout with GGG. If Stevens has lost so much as a step, Majewski is tough enough to dish the New Yorker his second straight defeat.

However, Stevens is eager to start another knockout streak and to prove he is still a force in the middleweight division. Majewski may be a tough customer, but Stevens believes that the Polish-born fighter is merely a road block to his next title fight.

Curtis had this to say about the upcoming fight against “The Machine”, “I feel good, I am just ready to get in there and get back to where I was at.” He added, “I have to go in there and destroy him. I just have to do what I do best.”

This NBCSN boxing double header kicks off the third season of Fight Night, and promises more of the same thrilling action that has made the series the most popular boxing program for the past two years.

MAJEWSKI READY TO COMBAT POWER WITH PRESSURE IN MIDDLEWEIGHT MATCHUP AGAINST STEVENS

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Polish middleweight Patrick “The Machine” Majewski, 21-2, 13 KOs, knows quite well that his opponent Curtis “Showtime” Stevens is a power puncher, but Majewski is ready to bring his own rock-solid abilities into the ring when the two 160-pounders clash at Resorts International Casino Hotel, in Atlantic City, NJ, in the ten-round main event on the live season debut of NBCSN Fight Night, Friday, January 24th.

Curtis “Showtime” Stevens, 25-4, 18 KOs, powered his way up the rankings and into a world title fight but the Atlantic City-based Majewski has a granite chin and a reputation for applying wilting pressure in the ring. He has proven himself to be a formidable force, especially in the late rounds, when his conditioning and aggressiveness begin to take over. Regardless of whether or not “The Machine” knocks his opponent out, he tends to walk through their punches and eventually wear them down in the later rounds.

Despite Stevens’ status as a heavy-handed KO artist, Majewski is confident he has what it takes to hand the Brooklyn native his second consecutive loss. About Stevens’ notorious knockout power, Majewski said, “I’ve got to be prepared for Stevens and be aware. He has big knockout power. I know this.” He added, “I just got to be careful not to get clocked with anything.”

In his most recent bout, Stevens gave WBA/IBO Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin a spirited challenge, but lost by eighth round TKO. Majewski dropped a decision to Patrick Nielsen in his last outing and, like Stevens, will be determined to win in Atlantic City.

With both boxers in need of a victory, and with their respective no-nonsense styles likely to generate serious action, this fight figures to get 2014 started with a bang. Fans love nothing more than watching two fighters who like to go right at each other in the ring and they will get that with the Stevens-Majewski matchup.

In addition to having the home crowd advantage, the six-foot Majewski will also have the edge in both height and reach. If Majewski can indeed take Stevens’ shots and keep the New Yorker pinned against the ropes, he could have the recipe for an upset.

When asked about the Friday, January 24th fight, Majewski said, “I am always going to bring a good performance and an exciting fight.” He added, “It is going to be a night full of fireworks and excitement.”

STEVENS – MAJEWSKI BOUT STARTS AN ELECTRIC YEAR IN THE MIDDLEWEIGHT DIVISION

Curtis Stevens
Atlantic City, NJ: The Stevens-Majewski fight scheduled for Friday, January 24th on NBCSN live from Resorts Casino and Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ marks the first of many explosive middleweight match-ups awaiting boxing fans in 2014. The red hot middleweight division saw some memorable bouts in 2013 and is jam-packed with exciting champions and contenders that will produce some wild match-ups this year.

Gennady Golovkin is arguably the top middleweight fighter in the world and in 2013 he showed the world why with four wins all coming by knockout (Gabriel Rosado, Nobuhiro Ishida, Matthew Macklin and Curtis Stevens). In 2014, the WBA champion is expected to face some tough contenders starting with his fight against Osumanu Adama in February.

WBC and lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez defeated Martin Murray in Argentina in April 2013 but was sidelined due to injuries for the rest of the year. He is expected to face former three-division world champion Miguel Cotto in June. Cotto, for his part, will seek to make Puerto Rican history by dethroning the champ to win a world title in his fourth division.

WBO champion Peter Quillin also defeated Fight Night alum Gabriel Rosado in 2013 in a controversial tenth round stoppage. It remains to be seen what the WBO champ will do in 2014.

After successfully defending his IBF title four times, Daniel Geale lost his belt to Darren Barker in August. Barker then lost to former WBA world champion Felix Sturm in Germany in a stunning second-round knockout. Sturm had previously lost the WBA title – that he successfully defended for six years – to Geale in 2012 via a split decision loss. Geale is scheduled to face Garth Wood in February from Australia but has been calling for a rematch with Sturm for a chance to reclaim the IBF title.

The would-be contenders for the middleweight crown begin their campaigns for a title shot on Friday, January 24th from Resorts International Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, with the much-anticipated fight between Curtis “Showtime” Stevens and Patrick “The Machine” Majewski. The Stevens-Majewski fight will be a “put up or shut up” fight for both men as both are coming off recent defeats.

Stevens lost his last fight at Madison Square Garden to Gennady Golovkin. Stevens has taken the shortest break of any of Golovkin’s 2013 KO recipients since his eighth-round knockout in November before getting back in the ring again. When asked about the match-up Stevens said, “It’s time for me to get back in the ring.” He added, “It is my goal to eliminate all of the middleweights in the division and get another crack at the title; I am ready for anything Majewski might throw at me. When I get in the ring there will be no overthinking, I am just going to do what I do best.”

Majewski lost via unanimous decision to Patrick Nielsen in twelve rounds in September after winning four in a row dating back to April 2012. “The Machine” said, “I need this big challenge. I realize winning this fight against Curtis Stevens can push me up in the ranks of the middleweight division. I do not intend to fail, believe me I have been training and studying very hard and I am ready to pass this test.”

NBC Sports Group’s Fight Night’s play-by-play announcer Kenny Rice said, “I think this has the potential to be a very interesting fight. We all know that Curtis Stevens is a supreme KO artist. A decent proportion of Majewski’s wins [52%] have also come via knockout. I think the two of them feel they have a lot to prove in this fight.” He added, “Stevens will want to reestablish himself in the middleweight division and Majewski will see this as a vehicle for solidifying a position in the division. There are a lot of good scenarios that can develop when you have two hard hitting guys; we could be in for some fireworks.”

Both men will come out swinging with something to prove on the 24th. In this tough middleweight division a loss for either fighter could mean they will get lost in the shuffle of contenders looking to move up the ranks – including Patrick Nielsen who has yet to make his US debut, David Lemieux fighting out of boxing hot spot Montreal and Marco Antonio Rubio who is the WBC’s mandatory opponent and is awaiting his shot at Sergio Martinez following the Martinez-Cotto fight in 2014. Other middleweight challengers include former champions Darren Barker and Daniel Geale and past contenders Martin Murray, Matthew Macklin, Andy Lee, Sam Soliman and Bryan Vera. Upcoming prospects include Max Bursak and Danny Jacobs.

B.J. Flores, NBC’s boxing analyst said, “Curtis was on nobody’s radar two years ago and now people definitely know the name Curtis Stevens. He came on with Main Events, fought on NBC three times and the next thing you know he is fighting Golovkin, the best middleweight in the division. Not everyone can bounce back from a loss like that; Curtis has a lot to prove in this fight.” He went on to say, “This fight against Curtis will be Majewski’s chance to step up and get on the middleweight map; if he wants a chance at a title he needs to beat Curtis. It is a make or break fight for both guys.”

Boxing fans and networks can mix and match any of the champions or contenders in the middleweight division for a heart-stopping fight. This level of parity and excitement is what makes for historically great boxing. The sport has not seen a batch of potential middleweight stars like this since the 1980s with Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Tommy Hearns and Roberto Duran. It is also reminiscent of the great heavyweight division of the 1990s including Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe. OLANREWAJU DURODOLA STEPS UP FOR NABF CRUISERWEIGHT TITLE FIGHT WITH MCHUNU AS WILSON PULLS OUT DUE TO INJURY

ATLANTIC CITY – When the popular nationally televised live boxing series Fight Night returns for its Friday, January 24th season opener on NBC Sports Network, the co-feature bout will be an intriguing clash for the NABF championship belt between two African cruiserweights. South African Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu, 14-1, 10 KOs, meets Olanrewaju “God’s Power” Durodola, 15-1, 14 KOs, of West Africa, in a 10-round fight at Resorts International Hotel and Casino, on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Durodola stepped in when Garrett Wilson was forced to pull out of the bout due to an injury. The fight is the main supporting bout of a card headlined by the 10-round middleweight encounter between Curtis Stevens and Patrick Majewski.

Thabiso Mchunu, of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, burst onto the US boxing scene in August with a surprising one-sided points victory over proven contender Eddie Chambers of Philadelphia. It was Mchunu’s first fight in America, and he pulled the major upset on the same Fight Night series, before a shocked US TV audience.

The victory sent a message to the rest of the cruiserweight division that Mchunu was the latest title threat in the 200-pound class. The 6-year pro had posted many other victories, but this one was heard around the globe. He takes his next step toward a title shot on January 24th, against another tough African fighter.

The little-known Olanrewaju Durodola hails from Lagos, Nigeria, but now fights out of Kansas City, KS. He’s packed in 16 fights, all in the US, since turning pro in 2011, and will look to make his name in the sport, by fashioning his own upset introduction against Mchunu. His big opportunity comes after Mchunu’s original opponent, Philadelphian Garrett Wilson, was forced out of the high-profile fight due to injury.

“I want to thank NBC, Dibella Entertainment and Main Events for giving me this opportunity to win the NABF title and to put myself in position for a world title.” said Durodola. “The NABF title has been held by so many fighters who have become world champions and I will not let Mchunu get in the way of my goals.”

Durodola added, “I respect Mchunu as an elite boxer but he has not faced anyone with the skills and power I will bring on January 24th.”

All but one of Durodola’s wins have come by knockout, and like Mchunu, has only lost one bout in his entire career. On paper, these two punchers look quite similar, but physically there are differences. At 6′ 2″ tall, Durodola will tower over Mchunu, just 5′ 8″. However, Mchunu, world ranked #4 (WBC), #8 (WBO), #10 (IBF), and #15 (WBA), clearly proved that size was not a factor against the 6′ 1″ Chambers. Plus at 25 years of age, Mchunu is 5 years younger than Durodola.
The 10-round fight should be interesting, with both fighters eager to impress fans and establish their reputation as the best rising star in the cruiserweight division.

Six additional fights are planned to be added to the Friday night card which is promoted by Main Events, Peltz Boxing, Showpony Promotions and Dibella Entertainment.

The 10-round co-feature bout is another exciting matchup. South African cruiserweight, Thabiso Mchunu, 14-1, 10 KOs, takes on Philadelphia crowd-pleaser Garrett Wilson, 13-7-1, 7 KOs, in what figures to be an interesting clash of styles.

A new sort of pressure fighter

Gennady Golovkin (208x138)
Saturday on the small stage at Madison Square Garden, before a crowd of 5,000 – in a city of 8.3 million – a throng one euphoric commentator described as both “electric” and “jumping,” Kazakhstani middleweight titlist Gennady “GGG” Golovkin scored a corner stoppage over Brooklyn’s Curtis “Showtime” Stevens at the end of round 8, after dropping Stevens in round 2, and battering him for what 18 minutes followed. It was another fearsome beating administered another barely ranked opponent, by Golovkin, a beating to inspire still more fearless commentary.

One must wonder if Gennady Golovkin’s interpreter tells him what expectations now rest their weight on the boyish Kazakhstani’s juicy deltoids, the hope a television network now kindles that he will be an all-time great, whatever defensive limitations he might have, however late their campaign for his greatness started. If Golovkin is going only on his perception of what is said to him by HBO talent in fighter meetings, in English, a language he does not yet speak coherently – “OK, man, I respect box, I respect everybody,” he said after Saturday’s fight, “I respect everybody athletes, I respect everybody sports, you know, this is a sport for me, first, hey man, going to home just tell your parents just, ‘Hi, I come back, thank you’” – he may not grasp yet the gravity of others’ expectations, of the investment, financial and reputational, boxing’s most powerful network now makes in him. Golovkin likely does not, or he would fight with greater urgency than he showed Saturday against Curtis Stevens, a chinny man he struck nearly 300 times en route to a corner stoppage quite similar to the one he scored on Gabriel Rosado in January.

Golovkin (28-0, 25 KOs) just required 96 seconds longer to bring Stevens to justice than did Marcos Primera (20-28, 13 KOs), a man who has not won a single contest since stopping Stevens more than seven years ago, evidence of nifty matchmaking at least. That Golovkin’s official promoter, K2, has as its figurehead Wladimir Klitschko implies a cautious approach to matching a man whose unofficial promotional company, HBO, finds an extraordinary number of openings every telecast and ring announcement to mention Golovkin’s record-breaking knockout percentage as champion, which would be more meaningful, if not quite meaningful, if Golovkin actually were the middleweight champion, or at least if there were not already a lineal middleweight champion who was not Golovkin and whose reign as champion did not precede Golovkin’s by four months. Or does it violate decorum to mention such a thing in the throes of this, our fourth orGGGy of 2013?

Asked to call-out a postfight opponent, Golovkin wisely chose a limited fellow titlist already promised to another network and a champion already promised to Miguel Cotto. Good boy: when spring of 2014 finds Marco Rubio or Max Bursak on the bill, it will demonstrate only that Golovkin is so feared neither Peter Quillin nor Sergio Martinez had the courage to ply limited wares before Golovkin’s marketplace of pain – an absurdity in the case of Martinez, a man who fought but once at 160 pounds before decisioning the lineal middleweight champion of the world, before spearchiselling a guy, Paul Williams, who held boxing’s Most Avoided title after decisioning that moment’s Most Feared titlist, Antonio Margarito. Much as it may warm this instant to project fear on Martinez’s inactive fighting spirit, it’s not likely a guy who needed 500 punches to stop Rosado and Stevens on their feet makes “Maravilla” sleep fitfully on his leopard-skin satins.

So here’s a callout worth making: Andre Ward. Before we say once more about a guy who this year laid waste to two career 154 pounders, at middleweight, before April Fools’ Day, he will “fight anyone from 154 pounds to 168,” we might at least give him a tryout with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., whom, it says here, Saturday night’s Golovkin would need 1,200 punches to stop, or else put him directly in the ring with Ward, a prizefighter who, we might remember for the sake of comparison, is 22 months younger than Golovkin.

The year Golovkin captured a silver medal in the Olympics, Ward won gold. And in the 25 months Ward beat Mikkel Kessler, Allan Green, Sakio Bika, Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch, winning the Super Six tournament, Golovkin beat Mikhail Makarov (10-0), Milton Nunez (21-1-1), Nilson Julio Tapia (14-2-1), Kassim Ouma (27-7-1) and Lajuan Simon (23-3-2). For all Golovkin’s prowess in sparring sessions, it is instructive to recall in the moment Golovkin was racing through Simon, Ward was preparing to beat Froch – as proper a juxtaposition of the words “untested” and “tested” as exists in prizefighting from 154 pounds to 168.

Golovkin is entirely effective at beating up men who retreat and nearly as effective at causing their flight. But even Curtis Stevens, whose eyes rolled grotesquely sideways when a Golovkin left hook bounced his head off the blue mat in round 2, was able to neutralize at least temporarily Golovkin’s attack, and place a few decent shots of his own, by muscling forward to a range at which Golovkin does not seem nearly comfortable as he is at middle distance.

Andre Ward is the current best in our sport at getting to an opponent’s chest, discomfiting him, and removing all traces of menace; in a match with Golovkin, Ward would clinch, headbutt, shoulder and infight, and he would snatch the spirit from Golovkin the very way Bernard Hopkins did to Felix Trinidad, at the very moment Trinidad was both more dominating and more tested than Golovkin is now. Or perhaps he would not; perhaps Ward, too, would succumb to Golovkin’s relentless fiststorm, justifying fully half the credit Golovkin enjoys for what fantastical beasts his partisans currently see him hypothetically slaying.
