Former Junior Middleweight Title Challenger Rodriguez to Meet Former Welterweight Title Challenger Hernandez on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights

The May 24 edition of ESPN’s Friday Night Fights presented by Corona Extra will feature former Junior Middleweight and Welterweight title challenger Delvin Rodriguez (27-6-3, 15 KOs) and former Welterweight title challenger Freddy “El Riel” Hernandez (30-4, 1 ND, 20 KOs) in the 10-round Junior Middleweight main event. Friday’s show from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., will air live at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2 HD, ESPN Deportes and WatchESPN. Friday’s card is promoted by Star Boxing.

Commentators:
Joe Tessitore and Teddy Atlas will be ringside describing the action for ESPN2 HD, while studio host Todd Grisham (@GrishamESPN) will be on site presenting all the latest boxing news and highlights. Main Event:
Connecticut’s Rodriguez, who also doubles as a boxing analyst for ESPN Deportes’ Viernes de Combates, is making his 16th fighting appearance on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. Rodriguez has had impressive wins throughout his career, including wins over Mike Arnaoutis (W12), Shamone Alvarez (W12), Oscar Diaz (TKO11) and a 10-round unanimous decision win in a rematch over Pawel Wolak, which led to a Junior Middleweight title shot against defending titlist Austin Trout. Rodriguez’s first match against Wolak–a 10-round draw televised on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights–was named “2011 Fight of the Year” by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA). In his last fight in February, Rodriguez scored a sixth-round TKO win over George Tahdooahnippah.

After the fight, ESPN.com boxing writer Dan Rafael (@danrafaelespn) wrote: “Rodriguez, with his home-state fans loudly behind him, simply pummeled Tahdooahnippah, who had nothing but heart and a good chin. Rodriguez nearly stopped him late in the second round as he teed off with flush right hands over and over. Rodriguez opened a cut on the bridge of Tahdooahnippah’s nose in the third and continued to pound him relentlessly, round after round. This was a strong performance from Rodriguez against an utterly overmatched but game foe.”

California’s Hernandez, who challenged former titlist Andre Berto for his WBC Welterweight belt in 2010, enters Friday’s fight with wins over former world titlists Luis Callazo (W10), Mike Anchondo (TKO4) and DeMarcus Corley (KO5). Hernandez is looking to get back to his winning ways following a 10-round unanimous decision loss to 2008 Olympian Demetrius Andrade in his last fight in January.

“He (Hernandez) needs to get a ‘W’ now to get some more opportunities, and he’s fighting a guy who’s going to give him that opportunity,” advisor Nigel Burns said. “That’s not a knock on Rodriguez, but Rodriguez is more of a fighter than a boxer. I think it should be a good fight. Rodriguez is a good fighter and has fought some good people, and I expect him to actually stand in the pocket and trade with us.”

Friday’s 10-round co-feature will pit undefeated Junior Welterweight Issouf “Volcano” Kinda (16-0, 6 KOs) against Chris “Hurricane” Howard (15-2-1, 7 KOs). DELVIN RODRIGUEZ SCORES SIXTH ROUND KNOCKOUT ON ESPN FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS AT MOHEGAN SUN

UNCASVILLE, CT (February 16, 2013) In front of a packed electric crowd, former world title challenger Delvin Rodriguez put the deeply talented junior middleweight division on notice Friday night with a dominating performance over game George “Comanche Boy” Tahdooahnippah culminating in a sixth round stoppage.

Fighting in front of a packed house of loud and proud boxing fans at the Mohegan Sun and broadcast live on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Rodriguez sixteenth appearance on the iconic series, the scheduled ten rounder was all in the Danbury, Connecticut native’s hands as he blistered the brave but outgunned Tahdooahnippah with power shots from the opening bell utilizing pinpoint precision with either hand.

After five plus rounds of Rodriguez’s continuous assault, referee Eddie Cotton called a stoppage at the 2:41 mark of the sixth round stanza.

Now 27-6-1 (15KO’s), the 32-year-old Rodriguez’s win was confirmation for promoter Joe DeGuardia of Star Boxing who is looking ahead to a big 2013 for the popular East Coast fighter.

Delvin really stepped it up and he showed the skills and fire of a man on a mission to create another title opportunity for himself he looked fantastic and a performance like this in front of a huge, supportive crowd shows me that the Delvin Rodriguez is a player again in the jr middleweight division, said DeGuardia.

The always-classy Rodriguez spoke afterwards of his dedicating the fight to the Sandy Hook Elementary School of nearby Newtown, Connecticut and the meaning of the tragedy to the father of two children.

The loss was the first for Tahdooahnippah of Lawton, Oklahoma, moving his record to 30-1-1 (23KO’s). Tahdooahnippah showed tremendous heart which was appreciated by the numerous native Americans in attendance.

In the scheduled ten round televised co-main event, 24-year-old lightweight prospect Chris Howard drilled veteran Bayan Jargal to the canvas in the third round as referee Danny Schiavone called a halt to the action at the 1:46 mark of the stanza as the game Jargal beat the count but was in no shape to continue.

With the win, Cincinnati, Ohio native Howard improved to 15-2-1 (7KO’s) while Jargal of Arlington, Virginia fell to 17-4-3 (11KO’s).

Impressive junior middleweight newcomer Enver Halili of Bronx, New York dominated Hartford, Connecticut’s Antonio Marrero over four rounds to earn a shut out decision victory by scores of 40-36 X 3.

The 24-year-old Halili improves to 3-0-0 (1KO) while Marrero fell to 0-1-0 (1NC).

Sporting a record of the 26-6-3 with 14 knockouts and known for his thrilling performances including the 2011 “Fight of the Year”, Rodriguez is among the most exciting and respected warriors in the sport. He is currently world ranked #7 by the WBA.

Rodriguez is best known for his all out war with Polish standout Pawel Wolak, their first fight on JULY 15, 2011 from the Roseland Ballroom in New York City being declared a draw. The bout won “Fight of the Year” honors and was broadcast LIVE on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

While their first clash was declared a draw, Rodriguez fought beautifully in the rematch winning a clear and decisive ten round unanimous decision on DECEMBER 3, 2011 at a sold-out Madison Square Garden in a bout that was televised on HBO Pay-Per-View.

Most recently Rodriguez travelled to the West Coast challenging WBA Junior Middleweight Champion Austin Trout on JUNE 2 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California, losing a twelve round decision in a bout that was broadcast on SHOWTIME.

RODRIGUEZ DOMINATES WOLAK

December 5, Bronx, NY….Joe DeGuardia’s Star Boxing’s prize Jr. Middleweight Delvin Rodriguez (26-5-2 14KO Danbury, CT) scored the most impressive win of his career Saturday night at the sold out Madison Square Garden as he pitched a near shutout over highly rated Pawel Wolak (29-2-1 19KO Mt. Arlington, NJ) over the 10 round distance. The unanimous scores read 98-92, 98-91, and 100-90 by the 3 judges at ringside.

The rematch of their first epic encounter on July 15 of this year was vastly different as Rodriguez used a razor like jab and sharp combinations from the opening bell to stymie Wolak’s attack. Wolak tried his best in his ever pressing style but one could see early that this was going to be Rodriguez’ night.

Both fighters were willing early but by the 4th round Rodriguez started to take over using all the punches in his arsenal to go along with deft foot movement as he started to pile up the points. As the bell sounded for the 10th and final round, both fighters received a well desevered ovation from the crowd and Rodriguez immediately went to work stunning Wolak with several combinations. As the round wore on Rodriguez went for the knockout, much to the crowds delight, as he continually unleashed devestating punches to Wolak’s body and head. To his credit, Wolak hung in gamely to the final bell and the crowd roared its approval as the fight ended.

It was clearly Delvin’ most significant win to date. Star Boxing’s founder and CEO Joe DeGuardia had this to say about his fighter, ” Delvin fought like a champion tonight. He rose to the occasion like true champions do. Further he showed in round 10 that from here on, Delvin is prepared to go for it all. Mattel’s got a monster holiday hit, but will franchise have staying power? Monster High ‘transmedia’ play expands beyond dolls to merchandise, apparel and entertainment.

The newest doll in Mattel’s hot Monster High line has “not lasted on the shelf more than 21 minutes,” said TimeToPlayMag.com editor-in-chief Jim Silver. In fact, Mattel has stopped selling the dolls–its first original franchise since Hot Wheels in 1968–on its website anymore, and a spokeswoman said the company is “producing everything we can.” Scarcity has driven up prices from original suggested retail of $16.99 to well over $40 on eBay and Amazon.

Monster High, a line of teen dolls from the makers of Barbie packaged as the children of famous monsters like Dracula and Frankenstein, have names like Draculaura and Frankie Stein, a “Twilight” twist, hip street fashions and complicated backstories. Draculaura, for instance, is a vegan who faints at the sight of blood.

But for Mattel, this is just the beginning. Monster High is intended to be a much bigger franchise than dolls–it’s a transmedia play that extends to merchandise, apparel and entertainment.

The brand, introduced in July, includes merchandise and entertainment ranging from Monster High-branded clothing at Justice (now out of stock, although a new line of branded clothing and accessories will arrive in January, the Mattel spokeswoman said); cosmetics, jewelry, and dolls at Claire’s; Halloween costumes at Party City; a music video and webisode series online with a dedicated YouTube channel; a chapter book for teens, written by popular teen author Lisi Harrison (“The Clique” and “The Alphas” series); a Halloween TV special on Nickelodeon, and coming in 2012, a full-length live-action musical movie to be produced by the same team behind “Hairspray” and “Chicago.” Macy’s will join as a partner in January with its own exclusive Monster High T-shirts. monsterhighwiki.org monster high wiki

While the strategy and marketing has been carefully crafted over more than three years to reach tween and teen girls, it’s also a unique and potentially risky ploy. go to website monster high wiki

Take media, for example. With the exception of one TV special, the animated “shows” are series of 90-second webisodes only available online. Traditional advertising has been small as well, with one TV commercial at launch in this fall (no longer on air) and a smattering of fourth-quarter print in tween-targeted pubs including Seventeen and Tiger Beat magazines. WPP’s Y&R is the agency.

“Monster High is working. The new business model is reaching teens where they live, congregate, play and interact with their friends in the digital media space,” said Reyne Rice, toy trend expert for the Toy Industry Association. This is a “trans-media storytelling model, since it did not start with a traditional entertainment property first.” The tween and teen audience Mattel is targeting already seem to get it. “We’ve heard girls talk about the shows, but we said ‘wait a minute, there aren’t any shows.’ But regardless of whether it’s on TV or on an iPad in the backseat of the car, it’s a show to them,” said Wynne Tyree, president of Smarty Pants, a youth and family research and brand consultancy.

Mattel wouldn’t say how much it has invested in Monster High, but analysts peg the figure at easily millions of dollars, reflecting its importance for the company.

And Mattel already has some validation of Monster High’s success. In its fiscal third quarter ending in September, it reported that worldwide sales of “other” doll brands, that is, those other than Barbie, were up 7% over last year, “driven primarily by strong performance of the Disney Princess doll line and the introduction of the Monster High doll line,” according to a press release. Overall, Mattel’s girls and boys brand business was up 8% year-over-year, with $1.17 billion in sales.

There has been some grumbling on the blogs that Mattel may have stoked the scarcity by under-producing. But Tim Kilpin, general manager, Mattel Brands, in a statement attributed the shortage to “the brand’s popularity and retailers managing their inventory tightly … We manufactured as much Monster High toys as we could to meet forecasted demand.” While Mattel has certainly tapped into the current trend of vampire and monster chic, will Monster High be able to sustain the heat?

“Mattel has believed in it from the very beginning,” Mr. Silver said. “They saw kids’ reaction early and felt they had a hit. I’d call it a calculated risk. A lot of time, money and effort have gone into Monster High. Something like this can last only a few years, no one can predict if it will go on for 10 or 20 years–but it absolutely could.” Bulik, Beth Snyder

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, one of the candidates for Fight of They Year will have it’s sequal on the December 3rd Miguel Cotto – Antonio Margarito undercard as Jr. Middleweight Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak will attempt to pick up where they left off their July 15th slugfest that ended in a draw.

The card will take place at Madison Square Garden.

“The rematch is a little sooner than I wanted as I wanted a title to be in place first, but the fans deserve this and this is the right stage,” Wolak told ESPN.com on Wednesday night after agreeing to the fight. “You know it will be another classic.”

“I want the fight. It’s a great fight and a great opportunity,” Rodriguez said. “It is definitely a tough fight, but I enjoyed our first fight and I know I have to be 150 percent in shape, the best I can be. He brought out the best in me. He’s a guy you have to be prepared for to be able to keep up. I see the fight going even better for myself this time.”

“It’s turning out to be, on paper, the perfect night,” Top Rank president Todd duBoef said. “What a way to come back to the Garden after not having a big fight there for a while. There is a slow process that occurs when making matches but for this one, everything ended falling into place perfectly.”

Wednesday, Top Rank’s Carl Moretti worked it out with Dunkin and DeGuardia while Ramos-Rigondeaux is headed for a purse bid.

“Adding this fight to the card, they’re going to need a renovation from the renovation with the place being so crazy,” Moretti said, referring to the ongoing overhaul at Madison Square Garden. “Delvin brings a crowd, the Polish fans will be there to support Wolak and you have a big main event, it is going to be crazy. It’s going to be a special night at the Garden.”

“People want the fight. This fight needs no promotion,” Rodriguez said. “Fighting under Cotto-Margarito, I know the crowd will be jumping. People have been waiting for this fight since right after the first fight. Everyone keeps asking, ‘When is the rematch?’ It’s something people keep telling me about, something boxing needs.”
