James, 147 lbs of Minneapolis, MN won by scores of 96-93, 96-94 while Omotoso took a card 97-92.

James is now 20-0.  Omotoso, 146 lbs of Oxnard, CA is 26-3.

Sergio Frias may have shoveled the dirt on the career of former world champion Vic Darchinyan by scoring a 2nd round knockout in a scheduled 8-round super bantamweight bout.

Frias landed a punishing right to the jaw that sent Darchinyan plummeting to the canvas on his back and the fight was stopped at 2:14

Frias, 121 lbs of Guadalajara, MX is 18-6-2 with 9 knockouts.  Darchinya, 122 lbs of Glendale, CA is 42-9-1.

Fighters spoke to media at the BJCC’s Arena Club inside the same venue that will host a stacked night of fights on Saturday night.

Here is what the fighters had to say Thursday:

DEONTAY WILDER

“I’ve wanted to hit somebody since May. I got teased but now it’s time. And I get to do it at home. There’s no better place to do it.

“We’ve had a few guys that we could have chosen, but there were certain guys we didn’t want to give a short notice opportunity. We needed a certain type of fighter for this job.

“We need someone who will fight with their heart and take this opportunity and make the most of it. Does he deserve the title shot? No he doesn’t. He knows it. But is Chris Arreola the perfect guy for this fight? Of course he is.

“Chris is lucky to get a third chance at a title. There’s a lot of prospects who would love to fight him just to get a chance to fight for this belt. We needed a special person for this situation and I blessed Chris Arreola with the opportunity.

“It’s time to fight. He’s ‘The Nightmare’ and I’m a knockout artist. What makes me special is the way I knock people out. Go look at the people I’ve knocked out and see what I’ve given them.

“This is going to be another story for me to write in the history books. I can feel it. It’s going to be a great show. Don’t miss it.

“I appreciated everyone who comes out for me when I’m here fighting at home. I’m really excited about this show. You know the words at the end of the night will be ‘And still! Heavyweight champion of the world.'”

CHRIS ARREOLA

“I’m ready for this fight. I’m more ready than I’ve ever been. I’m hungry. This isn’t a cakewalk. I respect Deontay, that’s why I trained for you. Come fight time, there’s no respect, it’s time to fight.

“One thing no one can question about me is my heart. I’m going to come at him but be smart. My goal is to take home that title and make history.

“I want to thank Deontay for giving me this opportunity. I am a sleeping giant. I’m being underestimated. Place your bets on me and make some money.”

SAMMY VASQUEZ JR.

“Me and Felix Diaz are both coming to bring it. It’s going to be a tough fight for him and myself. People have to watch this fight. To me he’s undefeated and I’m coming in undefeated. We’re putting it all on the line in this fight.

“Felix and I have worked together and we’re friends, but this is business. He knows that I’m going to bring it like I do every fight. It’s a great opportunity to be showcased on this card.

“If you feel that you’re the best in your weight division, then it doesn’t matter who they put in front of you. My opponent doesn’t matter; we’re going to get the job done. I have to fight quality opponents to be able to step up to the next guy.

“Felix Diaz is a great competitor and he’s a very tough fighter. He has a tremendous amount of talent and he never stops coming, just like I do.

“I’m a pressure fighter. I like to show the crowd how I get down. I’m an undefeated fighter and I will remain that way Saturday night. I’m here to take care of business.

“I need wins like this to get fights with Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman and I need to do it decisively.

“If I can get this win I definitely want Danny Garcia. He’s a Philadelphia guy. I’m from Pittsburgh, it’d be a fun matchup. We’re both marketable guys and I think it’d be a huge fight.

“I just want to fight the best. That’s what I’m here for. I’ll fight anybody. I want to get a world title.”

FELIX DIAZ

“I want to thank everyone who is here today. Everything is ready to go. We’ve had a great training camp leading up to this fight.

“I know that Sammy is a very good fighter. We’ve been stablemates before, but this is business. I’m going to do what I have to do to be victorious on Saturday.

“I’m ready to get in the ring and do anything that I can on Saturday to get the victory.”

ERICKSON LUBIN

“This is a great opportunity on a big card. I’m here to showcase my talent and show why I’m one of the best 154-pound fighters in the world.

“This is a stepping stone for me. I know this is a tough Mexican who will be a great opponent. I just took care of business early a few weeks ago in Chicago and I’m looking to do the same thing Saturday. I’m here to steal the show.

“I want to thank my team for helping me in training camp and getting me to this moment. It’s ‘Hammer Time’ on Saturday.”

JAMAL JAMES

“We always stay ready in the gym. It’s always training camp. I’m at a point in my career where I have to be ready at all times. When the call comes, I’m ready.

“We’re working on some things that we wanted to tighten up from the last fight and I can’t wait to show everybody my improvements.

“Wale has been in there with some great competitors. We had to make sure everything is tightened up because he’s a strong guy. He has a good knockout ratio so you have to watch out for power punches.

“A lot of guys I fight are shorter than me. I’m one of the tallest welterweights in the game. A lot of guys have to fight me the same way, so we know what to expect. Our defense is tight and I’m sitting down on my punches more than ever.

“It’s a blessing to be on a card like this. I was very excited when I got the call. Deontay Wilder is a heavyweight champion and it’s a stacked card. It’s a great honor. I’m happy to keep stepping up in competition and in platform.

“I’m a class-act in the ring. I’m trying to bring the master skill back to boxing. But I’m ferocious at the same time. You won’t be mad because I always give you a great show.”

GERALD WASHINGTON

“I’m looking to go out there and take care of my business. We’ve worked hard in training camp and we’re prepared for anything.

“I’m going to use my speed and athleticism. The goal is to execute my game plan. Hopefully I can stay busy, land something big and get him out of there.

“My grandfather is actually from Alabama so I have roots here. It’s very exciting to be on an undercard for Deontay Wilder defending the heavyweight world title. I have to perform and be exciting so that I one day I can be fighting a great champ like Deontay Wilder.

“I’m different than I was before. This is going to be the best me stepping in there Saturday. I’m looking to get him out of there.”

Deontay Wilder, Chris Arreola, Sammy Vasquez Jr. & Felix Diaz Media Workout Quotes

DEONTAY WILDER
BIRMINGHAM, AL. (July 13, 2016) – Heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder, two-time heavyweight title challenger Chris Arreola, undefeated welterweight Sammy Vasquez Jr. and Olympic Gold medalist Felix Diaz participated in a media workout Wednesday as they near their respective Premier Boxing Champions on FOX and FOX Deportes matchups taking placeSaturday, July 16 from Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and features unbeaten rising star Erickson Lubin battling once beaten brawler Ivan Montero in addition to the Wilder vs. Arreola and Vasquez Jr. vs. Diaz bout. The televised action will switch over to FS1 and FOX Deportes immediately following the conclusion of the FOX telecast.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment in
association with TGB Promotions and Bruno Event Team, start at only $20 and are on sale now. For tickets please visit www.alabamatitlefight.com and www.ticketmaster.com.

The fighters worked out at Round 1 Boxing in Vestavia Hills, Alabama as they prepare for the card headlined by the hometown favorite, Wilder, making the fourth defense of his heavyweight title.

Here is what the fighters had to say Wednesday:

DEONTAY WILDER

“When it comes to Deontay Wilder, people look for the knockouts and I deliver. What separates me from other heavyweights is the fashion in which I knock guys out. I don’t just knock you out, I really put you out.

“Arreola definitely has a style prone to a knockout. He’s a pressure fighter who will come forward all night. That plays to my style. I love pressure fighters who give me a challenge. They keep me moving and thinking. I love the sweet science and the art to it.

“I never look at films of opponents because I want to be surprised and I want to give myself a mental challenge in there. That’s what makes this sport so great.

“Birmingham has showed me love from day one. I don’t just represent my city; I represent the state. Everywhere is my home. Birmingham understands entertainment and excitement and what I’m trying to bring to people here.

“I’m here to defend my title against a very hungry fighter. It’s a life-changing event for the man who holds the belt at the end of the night.

“I never look past anybody. But I can look through them. Before I became a champion, I said I wanted to be an active champion. Just like I was active coming up. This has been my longest time away from the ring, so if all goes well on Saturday, I want to be back in the next few months.

“I have an ability to get out of bed and fight. I can do things that regular fighters can’t do. I don’t do miles of roadwork. I’m blessed with stamina.

“This is my gift to give back to my state. Boxing is growing fast here. Me and Jay Deas have always wanted to do this. It warms my heart that we’re living our dreams.”

CHRIS ARREOLA

“Deontay is a very tough opponent so I have to come hard this time. This is my third world title shot and I have to make it count. The first time I was too young, the second time I got caught with a shot, but this time I’ll be ready for anything.

“Fighting a guy like Wilder, I have to be ready for anything. But he has to be ready too. I’m no slouch. I have fire and he’s another person in my way. I’m here to get it.

“There’s no challenge to get ready for a fight. I’m a boxer, this is what I do and this is what I love to do. Boxing is the most gentlemanly sport there is. You beat each other up then you shake hands like nothing happened. I’ve been grinding every day in the gym for this.

“This is a big night for both of us. It’s a great opportunity to be on primetime. People are going to be watching for free at sports bars and it puts us out there. They’re going to watch two big men on display going for it all.

“I took it one day at a time in camp. I had to grind and get better every single day. I fear no man. I respect the man, but I don’t fear him. Everybody knows that I fight coming forward. I have to be smart and I have to move in angles.

“I want to leave a legacy behind. When they talk about Chris Arreola, they’re going to say ‘he did it.’ I took the long road but here we are now.

“I expect him to have a lot of fans and he’s very deserving of that. He’s made things happen in this state and this state is lucky to have a fighter like him. But no one can get in there with him. The fans can’t fight for him. I love the fans, but they’re just there to watch. It’s just me and Wilder in there Saturday.

“Beating Bermane Stiverne and defending the title how he has, I definitely respect Deontay. The humility that Deontay has shown has been impressive. He was more brash coming up the rankings and flamboyant. Now he’s come into his own and he understands who he is.

“The biggest difference between now and earlier in my career is that I’m comfortable with myself. My main motivation is being a boxer. I’m a boxer first. It’s not about who has the better six-pack.

“Weaknesses are something that I have to bring out of Deontay. Someone different shows up every fight. We have a plan but we’ll have to expose him while I’m in the ring. You can see videos all day, but it might not be the same guy in the ring.”

SAMMY VASQUEZ JR.

“I think this fight goes eight rounds at the most. It’s tough to predict and he’s a shifty guy but I’m confident. I’m going to key in on the body and try to wear him out. I’ll be smart about it, because I have to make a statement in this fight.

“My reach and my height will give me an advantage but he’s a slick fighter. All of these things can be advantages, but they can also work against you. I like to box and keep my opponent at range. I can’t let him smother me. We’re very prepared for his best shots.

“I think it’s going to be a great fight. He has a great amateur pedigree but I think I’ve made more impact as a pro. We’re equals and it’ll make for an explosive fight.

“Diaz is a slick southpaw, just like Luis Collazo. He’s had a couple decent names on his resume. I think Lamont Peterson fell into Diaz’s trap a little bit, which made that a close fight. He’s coming up to my weight, but he brings it and he’s dangerous.

“It feels good to be here. It’s been a long training camp leading up to an unbelievable card like this. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to be here. My coach (Charles Leverette) is from Alabama and he represents the state hard, so I’ve been on the ‘Roll Tide’ bandwagon.

“When I was young I remember watching great heavyweight title fights and now to be on the undercard of one is incredible. There are kids out there looking at me and Deontay in the same way. It’s amazing. It’s a blessing that really boosts my career and lets people get to know me better.”

FELIX DIAZ

“Sammy is a very good opponent of course. He’s undefeated right now, but he won’t be after Saturday.

“Moving up to 147 is going to be great for me and allow me to be at my very best. I think I can do big things in this division and Saturday night will be the start.

“What you train for and what happens in the ring are two different things. I’m prepared for anything that could happen in the ring.

“I have a great team and training camp has gone very well. I’ve been ready to fight for a long time and I can’t wait to get in the ring.

“Everyone should come out, because it’s going to be a great fight. I’m very confident in my ability to pull off this victory.”

Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola Media Conference Call Transcript

DEONTAY WILDER
Lou DiBella
Thank you. And thank you all for joining us on the PBC on FOX Wilder vs. Arreola conference call. This show will be on July 16 at the Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham, Alabama. The start time on FOX is 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT

The opening bout on FOX is a terrific one. It’s undefeated 21-0 U.S. Army vet Sammy Vasquez against Felix Diaz, former Dominican Olympian. Excellent matchup in the welterweight division.

And then the heavyweight championship of the world where Deontay Wilder will be defending his WBC title against Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola. This wasn’t the fight, obviously, that Deontay had begun training for, the one we anticipated. In some ways, that makes it all the more dangerous and sort of leaves a lot of questions, because Chris Arreola never expected to be getting the shot at a heavyweight title on July 16; experienced heavyweight; a rugged, strong, big guy that’s dangerous and had some ups and downs in his career.

I think Chris knows that this is his opportunity and his big chance. Yo introduce Chris to say a few words, the Goossens and the Browns have worked with Chris Arreola throughout his career. And it’s my pleasure to introduce Brittany Goossen Brown.

Brittany Goossen Brown
Thank you, Lou. It has been our pleasure to have promoted Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola since he turned professional over 12 years ago. As long as I’ve known him, it has always been his dream to become the first Mexican heavyweight world champion and wear that green belt.

Saturday, July 16 will be Chris’s third attempt to fulfill his dreams. And he will not let this opportunity pass him by.

We’d like to thank FOX and FOX Deportes, the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama and everyone at DiBella Entertainment for their help in this promotion.

Without further ado, I’m honored to pass it over to my friend, Chris Arreola. Chris, do you want to go ahead and make an opening statement?

Chris Arreola
Yeah, well, this is my third opportunity and yeah, I’ve been with the Goossen’s for a very long time. Basically since the beginning of my career, it has been just a long road, man. I’ve been working hard. I’ve been working very hard to win this title. I can’t let this opportunity slip away, man. I respect Deontay. But like I said, once the bell rings, it’s time to go fight and it’s time to get that title, man.

I want that title. I want it more than anything. I’ve been working my ass off over in San Diego. I’ve got to make the best out of this opportunity.

L. DiBella
Thank you, Chris. Just before I introduce Deontay to say a few words, I just want to note that Chris’s trainer Henry Ramirez will be on the line when we open up to questions and so will Jay Deas, Deontay’s trainer and co-manager. So those gentlemen will be on the line if you want to ask them any questions when you’re asking Chris and Deontay.

It’s my pleasure to promote the WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World. I think one of the signs of a true professional and a real champion is to be able to roll with the punches, literally and figuratively. This has been a period where it’s been hard for Deontay. He’s had to roll with a lot of punches and a lot of things that were outside of his control.

July 16 he is putting the heavyweight title on the line again against the very, very tough customer who knows it’s his last chance. So this is a big night for Deontay Wilder and his fans.

It’s my pleasure to introduce the WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World, one of the most charismatic, hard punching and most approachable heavyweight champions we’ve had in a long time, Deontay Wilder.

Deontay Wilder
How are you guys doing? Less than a week away from the fight. I’m getting excited. I’m always excited to fight. I was born to do this. The closer it gets, the more eager and excited I’ve become, ready to get in the ring and do what I love to do; and that’s knock out people. I’ve been blessed with a God-given power.

I don’t have to work out a day in my life and I wake up in shape, just God given. Right there and I thank him for that. I’m just ready to put on another show for my – for my city, for my state of Alabama. We came a long way with first off going to the Olympics and then getting a commission to have professional bouts here and bringing attention to the sweet sport of boxing and to my state and we’re still climbing.

It’s been a long process. It’s been a strong and long days. But we’re here and we’re making – people here, they yearn for win the next fight. We want to see the next fight. We want to see the next championship fight. I bless people over and over again to see many shows here throughout the state of Alabama. And it became my thing now.

I’m looking forward to the BJCC with fans all over the world are going to be, not just Alabama. It’s going to my fans. It’s going to be Chris’ fans. It’s going to be fans all over the world that love boxing that’s going to attend. And that’s what it’s all about. All levels of classes coming together, seeing a great event come July the 16th.

And I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait. I need a stress reliever because I’ve been under so much stress. So I need something to hit. I can’t wait until July the 16th to get this stress relief off me.

L. DiBella
Thank you, Deontay. Once again, we want a big audience for PBC on FOX, but there are plenty affordable seats available at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham at the BJCC. So anybody who is drivable from Birmingham or anybody that can get on a plane, a Chris Arreola fan, come on down to Birmingham. And it’s going to be a great event.

Q
Chris, did you learn anything in the Klitschko fight that might help you get inside on Deontay?

C. Arreola
The main thing is I got to move my head, man. Vitali Klitschko clobbered me with jabs left and right. I believe he threw the most punches he had thrown in his career against me, and that’s because I just kept coming with the pressure. And the thing about it, I just got to be a lot smarter and I got to be more athletic about it because Deontay is more athletic fighter than Klitschko is, a lot more athletic. And he moves a whole lot better around the ring.

Klitschko was more methodical in nature. He just moves just a tad bit. He doesn’t waste any energy. I just got to try to keep Deontay on his heels, and that’s going to be a big task in itself. And just come hard behind the jab and not get caught with that dangerous right hand he has.

Q
How close have you been paying attention to the legal battle between your team and Povetkin’s? And has there all been in any way, shape or form any kind of distraction as you prepare for your own fight that was put together because of the cancellation?

D. Wilder
I haven’t been on a close watch of it. I’ve definitely been following it. It’s ridiculous, if you ask me. I’ve got served papers and everything. I’m not letting it knock me off my game, my focus. It’s just part of life, you know what I mean. I’ve been through worse situations in life. It’s just a bad storm – another storm that I have to weather in my life.

My skin is tough. That’s in all aspects of life, no matter what. I go through things to have a strong testimony because I know that somebody may, throughout my year, somebody may go through the same thing and I can give them advice on how to do it.

So right now, this is just a test for a strong testimony in the end of my life. So with that being said, I’m very focused. I’m always focused. When you’re in the hurt business, you have no choice but to stay focused on the test that lies at hand because if you’re not focused, you can get knocked out. No one wants to feel what it feels like to be knocked out, wake up in the hospital, don’t know what happened.

You never want to be that guy that didn’t even know the end of the round has ended because you’re dazed or you’re unconscious.

I train hard. I meditate. I visualize what I want to do and I go get the job done. This is a tough job to be the Heavyweight Champion of the World because everybody wants what you have. Everybody trying to get it and you’re trying to keep it.

As far as I’m concerned my future is bright.

Q
Do you have to be careful of a desperate opponent?

D. Wilder
Oh, most definitely. It’s just like a rabbit. The rabbit can be soft and sweet all you want, but you push him in a corner, he’s going to fight. So I think this is the corner for Chris Arreola. This is like the corner of his career. I’m always blessing people, though. I’ll bless him again with another opportunity.

Of course, people say who deserves this or who’s supposed to deserve that. But who are people to say who deserved anything? Everybody – sometimes chances come around more than twice, and this is his third time. I don’t believe in luck. But he’s been blessed with a third opportunity. If I was him, I would take it very seriously.

All the things that I’ve done in the past that didn’t make me susceptible in my future, I would change. I would definitely – it’s too late to change it now, but I’m just saying in preparation for this fight, that’s what the mentality would have been for me given that this is my last opportunity to eat because we chose careers like I kept saying, no matter what people say, the guy comes to fight. And that’s what we were looking for, for a short notice.

A lot of people going make excuses. After he get beat, he may make an excuse. But you know what? We know that he’s going to bring a great fight. He was the perfect person for this situation that we had. And to bring it to – and my people deserve a great fight. The fans deserve a great fight, no matter who they said they could have been. Everybody got an opinion.

I truly think at the end of this fight people are going to say, yeah, that was a great fight for it to be a short-notice fight. So I’m looking forward to it.

Q
Do you feel very lucky to have gotten this opportunity? And what’s your view of whether or not you’re worthy of having this opportunity?

C. Arreola
Do I deserve this title shot? No, I don’t think I do. But since I don’t deserve it, I’m doing everything to win, just like Deontay said. Everything that I didn’t do in the past, I’m doing. Everything that I wasn’t supposed to do, I’m not doing. So I’m doing everything I possibly can to win this fight. Everything. Everything. I got to leave everything in the ring. I got to leave everything out there, man. Yes, my back is against the wall. This is my last title shot. And I have to bring it. I have to make this a dog fight, plain and simple.

Q
Can you just tell me what was your reaction when you got the offer on the short notice? And what kind of condition were you in at that point because it was relatively short notice for a heavyweight title fight?

C. Arreola
Let’s go. That’s all I said. Let’s do it. You know what, man, when a title shot comes, you don’t turn it down, period, because it’s not going to come back around again. What kind of shape was I in? In decent shape. I had broken my ankle. What’s a broken ankle? It’s nothing.

So I got this shot. Let’s go. Let’s do it. Let’s get in training. Let’s make this happen. I respect Deontay and thank you for giving me this opportunity. The main thing is, I’m coming for the win. I’m not just coming to show up. I’m not coming just to get paid. That’s not me. I’m not that guy that comes to get paid.

I’m coming for that title. I’m coming for that win. I don’t even know what I’m getting paid for this. I don’t even know. It wasn’t even told to me. I don’t care. Money is not the part. My part is I want to win this fight. That’s the God honest truth.

Q
Hey, Henry, I’m wondering if you could speak to his conditioning for this fight, especially given the short notice of the bout.

Henry Ramirez
Well, you know, what did you say. We were preparing – well, we had a fight April 30. Chris fractured his ankle in early March, and he’d been cleared for a few weeks already. You know, he had done some light training. We got the call, I believe, right around May 16 or 17. Was nothing guaranteed. We were just kind of told you might get this fight. You might want to start getting ready.

And when we actually got the call that it was officially happening, even though it wasn’t announced; it was pretty much Memorial weekend. But we had already started training, you know, just having the heads up that we may get the fight.

It’s been great. We’re here in San Diego. There is a thing that Chris always – when we get him away from Riverside, it gives us the best chance to win. He’s done well here. He’s working with conditioning coach BB Hudson, also. We’ve had a good camp. Great sparring. He’s ready to go. We’re ready to fight today.

Q
Deontay, do you have plans to meet with the WBC later this month to discuss the whole drug test situation?

D. Wilder
First off, right now it’s me and Chris Arreola. All the other legal stuff, that can take a hold until after. This is what’s next right now. This is what I’m focused on. I’m not really focused on the legal side of everything. I got a great team. I trust in my team. I’m just sitting and waiting for that moment where Povetkin have his day as well, too.

At this point in time, my mind is we’re a week or so days away from me fighting, defending my title. With that being said, my whole mentality and focus is on July the 16th, Deontay Wilder versus Chris Arreola.

L. DiBella
We have lawyers obviously as do Povetkin’s people. We’re having conversations right now with theW BC about an opportunity literally to be able to do the same thing Povetkin’s people did. But that’s not for Deontay to be worried about right now. There is a fight on the 16th. That’s where everyone’s attention is. The rest of that stuff is going to take care of itself.

But frankly, the WBC, we respect their process and we want to get our points across. But this is ultimately going to be decided in the U.S. courts in the southern district of New York where there are lawsuits pending. So this is a legal matter. It’s nothing that the fighters are worried about right now.

And our – we’re totally focused on the big event on July 16 in Birmingham.

Povetkin is the last thing on my mind at least until we get through a big event a week from Saturday. Right now I’m not thinking about and I’m sure Deontay is not thinking about and I know Chris is not thinking about Povetkin.

Mitch Abramson: You mentioned before that you don’t deserve a title shot. Can you just, I guess, explain what you meant by that and just, you know, how you’ve been able to prepare yourself, I guess, with that type of mindset going into the fight?

Q
Chris how do you view the title shot? And if you actually really believe that you don’t deserve this shot?

C. Arreola
I understand the situation. I understand everything. Let’s be honest, man. Do I deserve it? Come on. No. But that being said, that means that I have everything to gain and nothing to lose. That’s my mentality. I’m coming in there to win this fight. I’m coming in here to upset Mr. Wilder. That’s my mentality. My mentality is to win, period.

There are those kind of fighters that just go in to get paid. That’s not me, man. I have never been that guy. If people have seen me fight, I don’t come in to get paid. I come in there to win. I’ve been preparing to win this fight. I’m preparing to take this title. I’m preparing for everything.

So all those legal things, all that can be thrown out the window when I win this title fight. You know, I’m here to win. There is no losing. That’s it. I’m training to win. I’m training to beat Wilder. He has his legal shit. I’m sorry about that. But I’m here to win. I’m here to win this fight. I’m here to win this title.

Q
Lou, just overall, do you feel like PEDs is still a real serious problem in the sport of boxing?

L. DiBella
Well, it’s an incredible problem. It’s a huge problem. It’s a problem that’s all over the world. You know, it’s one thing when a guy is using PEDs and he is hitting a baseball. It’s another thing when a guy is taking PEDs and getting into the ring to hit somebody in the head with his fists.

I’m not advocating weed or whatever, but it’s sort of a disgrace that there is more testing nationally and across the board for marijuana and suspensions of fighters for marijuana than there are substantive tests for PED.

Cheating is not okay. PEDs are dangerous. They are potentially putting a fighter’s health and safety and life at risk. I could tell you Deontay’s first reaction about when everything broke was he didn’t really care. He had prepared himself and he was going to beat the hell out of Povetkin regardless of any failed drug test.

I think that when everything was taken into consideration, you don’t get in the ring when you’re standing there as a man with your two fists and the other guys got a weapon in his fists. And, yeah, I think it’s a real problem. I think there should be zero tolerance for performance-enhancing drugs and national standards in this country and across the board where drug testing is enforced and cheaters are punished severely.

Q
On top of that, is there anything that you’d like to see implemented or changed, in particular?

L. DiBella
I’d like to see across the board uniform testing with some national body, but not where a fighter has to go in there and say, okay, I’m going to voluntarily do this or that or ratings organization has to get involved, and I commend the WBC. I think that we’re very proud of the green belt and defending it. And the WBC has taken a strong stand against performance-enhancing drugs.

It has to be a problem that’s policed by all state athletic commissions and perhaps even with a federal law that mandates uniform standards for PED testing throughout the country. And then obviously there are problems with foreign countries where this type of cheating is par for the course, and that’s not okay. That has to be addressed, too.

In response to your question, it’s a very serious issue and one that needs to be addressed in the future. What happened to Deontay here and how he had to refocus, and this wasn’t fair. Cheating is never fair, but particularly when you are using performance-enhancing drugs, you’re endangering potentially your opponent and putting the health and safety of the people in your sport at risk, and that’s unacceptable.

Q
Deontay, do you expect this to really start fast in a real action-packed way in the first round?

D. Wilder
Actually, I do. Like I said, I do believe that Chris is going to be aggressive and the first couple of rounds is going to come. Like he said, their game plan is to pressure me and to get inside and all those good things and stuff. I think it’s going to start out good and action packed.

I know about every style there is to face, especially pressure fighters because a lot of fighters feel the remedy in beating Deontay Wilder is to pressure him. Over and over again, I proved to everybody that I’m the best. I’m the best heavyweight in the world going on my back of my heels. People should have been seen that years ago.

I do feel like it’s going to be a fight or flight from the first round to the end of the round it may be. You know, so I’m looking forward to it. That’s one of the reasons why. Another reason why I keep saying we chose Chris. We can go on and on about different fighters or go down the list of who is available, who could have been a potential.

I really feel in my heart that we chose the right person. He’s never been in a bad fight. So when you get two fighters that fight with their heart that do it for the legacy and not really for the money because the money is a part of it. It’s just like when you go out and take pictures, it’s part of the business, part of the game. The money’s part of it.

When you get two warriors that’s fighting for the legacy of it, it’s made for great boxing for sure. I’m looking forward to the action packed, whether it’s from the 1st round to the 12th. I’m already prepared for anything.

Q
How much during the times when you’re immediately preparing for the fight in the last couple of weeks do you focus on the news, the other news about Povetkin, the WBC, other stories in the heavyweight division? Or do you just sort of cut all that stuff out and just think about the fight ahead of you?

D. Wilder
I just deal with it like I deal with life. If anybody know me personally, they’ll tell you like Deontay is the most laidback, cool, down to earth person ever. I really don’t read into blogs and go look for things. If anything has been said about me or have been written about me, it’s always brought to my attention. I don’t never go on the Internet to Google my name or see what pops up or anything like that.

If a lot of things have been going on, I’m out of the loop of because I don’t really pay attention, especially when it’s time to fight. Because only a fighter would know how serious it is to get up in the ring and take some punches to the head and keep in mind your head is not meant to be hit in the first place. But we’re the only crazy people that get up in this ring and do it. So we do it because we love to do it.

With that being said, when my life is on the line, when I’m up to get in there, I take this seriously anything because in this day I got family support. I got kids that really love their dad. That’s all the motivation that I need to do what I got to do.

The only reason I was in this sport, for one reason. That was for my 11-year-old. That was my daughter that was born with spina bifida. If it wasn’t for her, man, you all would have never heard of me, not in boxing. I take this seriously. And that’s all the motivation for me to zone out what’s going on in my personal life and focus on what’s going on right now in my life. And right now it’s July the 16th. I can’t wait.

Q
Chris do you just sort of have blinders on and just focusing between now and the 16th on this fight?

C. Arreola
See, nobody is talking about me. Nobody is saying anything about me. So there is nothing for me to look at. Everyone’s focus is on Deontay Wilder, on him and his situation with Povetkin and about Deontay already talking about fighting Joshua or Fury.

Ain’t nobody talking about me. Nobody is saying anything about me. All they say is bad things, so why in the hell am I even going to look at it? I have enough bad stuff being said about me by Henry. I have enough stuff being said to me by my wife. I don’t need to read anymore. That’s all the negative things I need.

I’m good. I’m all right. I don’t read into that stuff. My job is to work on July 16. My job is to try to shock the world on July 16. I don’t care what anybody says. They don’t live my life. They don’t even throw punches. They probably never got punched in their life. For them to be talking about me, I’m like, eh, whatever.

Q
With this fight on FOX on a Saturday night live primetime and all that, will this be your biggest showcase, probably your biggest television audience?

C. Arreola
Brother, I fought everywhere. I fought on Showtime. I fought on every network probably. So me fighting on FOX, honestly, thank you FOX for putting us on. I fought against Klitschko and it got one of the highest numbers.

When I fought with Stiverne on ESPN, I got one of the highest numbers. Like I said, no one can come in the ring. Listen. It’s only going to be me and Deontay. That’s the thing. That’s the thing about boxing I love so much is it’s a gentlemen sport.

We could talk about this stuff all we want. We could say everything we want. But at the end of the day, it’s just me and Deontay. Then the bell’s going to ring. Then the last bell is going to ring. And we’re going to hug it out like nothing happened. That’s what I love about boxing, man.

Anybody that has two hands has an opportunity. All it takes it one punch to knock somebody out. Just one punch. I could be losing the whole fight and just hit him with one punch that makes him go to sleep. It could go vice versa. That’s the way it happened to me against Stiverne. And that’s the way boxing is. I have no animosity or nothing like that. It’s a sport and I love this sport.

Q
The one thing that’s good that came out of the Povetkin situation is that you’re getting to go back home to Alabama to fight. Talk about what that means to you to fight in your home state like that.

D. Wilder
It’s definitely a good feeling, especially when you just – you just trained your ass off for months and months. You even travel to another country. And you continue your training there. And then when you feel – the week of the fight you travel and all that hard work, man, it just goes in vain. It really hurt my heart to the fullest because of me being in love with this sport and never really thought of something would happen to me like that. I never thought about that.

You want to fight, you’re going to fight fair and square. But, one of the decisions that we made why we want to stay home because of all that traveling because of working so hard for nothing. That takes a toll on just a person itself to travel so many miles. I’m the fighter and it stressed me out. Even with my team, the ones that even get in the ring. Everybody on my whole team – everybody was drained from that situation. I don’t wish that situation on no fighter.

For us to make a decision to stay home was the perfect choice because I didn’t even want to touch another plane. I’m staying at home. We’re going to train. We’re going to do everything here. That’s why we made the decision to come back to Birmingham and have the fight. People always – every time they see me, when the next one? Every time you get bigger and bigger and bigger.

This is going to be a mega fight. A lot of fans are going to be there, a sold-out crowd for sure. And the undercard is going to be great as well, too. You know, it’s going to be a fun environment and an action-packed fight.

Like I said, the fans are definitely going to enjoy this fight. It’s easy to say it’s special opinion now because you don’t understand how it’s going to be. Even in recent fights, like at my fight with Eric Molina or my fight with Johann Duhaupaus.

A lot of people like they just degraded them. And they called them bums and who are they. They never heard of them. This is people, though. Because if there was a price on you for a special opinion, a lot of people wouldn’t say nothing because they couldn’t afford it.

With that being said, people just have to wait and see things. They just can’t all jump because he didn’t do this; he didn’t do this. It doesn’t matter. This is the fight. You just never know what can happen.

And I think it’s really going to be a great fight and it’s going to be a win for boxing and a win for the fans of boxing. And it’s going to be a win for my state. Like I said before, I can’t wait. It’s less than a week-and-a-half away. It’s almost here, man. So I’m excited.

L. DiBella
Thanks, you mentioned an undercard, Deontay, a few minutes ago. There is going to be a tremendous amount of talent on this undercard from up and coming star Erickson Lubin to heavyweight Gerald Washington to Ryan Martin and a load of young kids from the Alabama area. It’s going to be a great card from beginning to end.

Again, the co-feature of Sammy Vasquez versus Felix Diaz is a terrific matchup. PBC on FOX 8:00 pm Eastern time, 5:00 pm Pacific time. The Legacy Arena at the BJCC. We hope people come out, buy tickets. I think it’s going to be a tremendous crowd

Deontay Wilder & Chris Arreola Enlist VADA Program Leading Up to Heavyweight World Title Showdown Saturday, July 16

DEONTAY WILDER
BIRMINGHAM, AL. (June 30, 2016) – Heavyweight world champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder and two-time title challenger Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola have both enrolled with the world-renowned Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (“VADA”) to conduct the anti-doping program leading up to their Saturday, July 16 showdown that headlines Premier Boxing Champions on FOX & FOX Deportes from Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama. Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

“Despite the short lead time to Wilder vs. Arreola, I am happy to report that VADA is in place as the anti-doping agency in accordance with the WBC Clean Boxing Program,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “VADA is a preeminent and reliable service and its relationship with the WBC evidences a commitment to a cleaner sport.”

This marks the second straight training camp in which Wilder has enrolled with VADA. VADA testing, in accordance with the WBC Clean Boxing Program, was in place for Wilder’s scheduled May 21 defense versus Alexander Povetkin, which was canceled following Povetkin’s positive test for Meldonium. In addition, Wilder has submitted paperwork to VADA and the WBC to participate in year-round anti-doping testing that is expected to commence later this summer.

WILDER: JOSHUA-BREAZEALE IS A 50-50 FIGHT

Deontay Wilder
Deontay Wilder says that Anthony Joshua’s IBF World Heavyweight title clash with Dominic Breazeale is a 50-50 fight at The O2 in London on Saturday night (June 25) live on Sky Sports Box Office and on Showtime in the US.

Wilder will be part of the Showtime team covering the fight from New York City and the WBC king will be on the edge of his seat as he cannot split champion or challenger as Joshua prepares to defend the World title he landed in April with a devastating second round KO win over Charles Martin.

“I definitely see the fight as a 50-50,” said Wilder. “You’ve got two big Heavyweights, and the challenger wants what the champion has, and the champion wants to keep what he has.

“It’s going to be interesting because we’ve seen Breazeale in a lot of wars. He’s almost been taken out by some of the smaller Heavyweights, he’s been punched around, but he has always survived.

“We’ve seen Joshua has also been busted up as well, but he has kept his composure, and this fight is in his backyard amongst his people.

“I don’t put anything past Breazeale because he’s coming in hustlers’ territory. I think that it’ll be a good fight because of Breazeale – I think he really wants it.”

Wilder makes the fourth defence of his WBC strap on July 16 against Chris Arreola in his hometown of Alabama, and the 30 year old says that Joshua will feel like a different fighter as he goes into his first fight as World champion – but that there’s now an even bigger target on his back.

“Once you’ve got that belt, you feel like ‘I’m the man’,” said Wilder. “After the first fight, that’s when you really feel confident. You really feel you’re the man, you’re the champ. You’re the ruler once you’ve had your first defence.

“For Joshua, this is his first title defence, so he should feel some kind of security about himself and confidence about himself. But he’s going to find out that to continue his career and defend that title, these guys aren’t going to lay down after one punch or after two punches.

“They’re going to keep taking punches, they’re going to keep getting knocked down and they’re going to keep getting up. This is for a World title. This can bring you out of poverty, you know what I mean? For that reason, these challengers are hungry. That’s one of the things that I had to realise.

“I put myself in their position. When I was a challenger, I was hungry and I already had the mentality that ‘you’re going to really have to kill me or hurt me bad to get me out of this ring.’ So that’s the mentality that these challengers have.

“It’s going to be interesting when you have a guy with a big heart that really, really wants it and I think Breazeale really wants it. We’re going to see where his heart is. I can’t say what kind of heart he has, but we’re going to see.”

Breazeale is following compatriot Charles Martin into Joshua’s Greenwich fortress, where the 2012 Olympic gold medalist is fighting for the seventh time in his pro career. Wilder has boxed outside of the US many times – including his one-round KO of Audley Harrison MBE in Sheffield – and he believes Breazeale’s confidence must be sky-high to travel to Joshua’s backyard.

“It takes a lot of courage, will and heart to fight in someone’s backyard,” said Wilder. “It takes someone that has confidence in themselves. And not to mention going to someone else’s country, because then the environment has completely changed. It’s a big difference and not a lot of guys are willing to travel outside of their country where they would be uncomfortable.

“Only a very few that really want to build their legacy, such as myself, will travel and have no problem. I don’t like to worry about judges or nothing. You go do what you have to do. That’s just my philosophy and mentality as a champion now. When you say the Heavyweight Champion of the World, that’s why this is tough, we travel all over the world.”

Joshua’s clash with Breazeale tops a huge night of boxing at The O2 as George Groves and Martin Murray meet in an eliminator for the WBA World Super-Middleweight title.
Chris Eubank Jr defends his British Middleweight title against Welshman Tom Doran, John Wayne Hibbert clashes with Andrea Scarpa for the vacant WBC Silver Super-Lightweight title, Brixton Heavyweight Dillian Whyte returns to the fray, unbeaten Birmingham star Kal Yafai is in action, Olympic bronze medal man Anthony Ogogo continues his comeback from injury, Conor Benn fights for the third time in the paid ranks and there’s a debut for Team GB star Felix Cash.

Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola Los Angeles Press Conference Quotes

Deontay Wilder
LOS ANGELES, CA (June 21, 2016) – Heavyweight world champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder and former title challenger Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola went face-to-face for the first time Tuesday at a Los Angeles press conference for their Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on FOX & FOX Deportes showdown Saturday, July 16 from Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

Televised coverage begins at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT and features undefeated welterweight contender Sammy “The Sergeant” Vasquez Jr. taking on former world champion Luis Collazo. Two more hours of boxing on FS1 and FOX Deportes will immediately follow at 10 p.m. ET after the Wilder vs. Arreola fight on FOX. Further details will be announced shortly.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and TGB Promotions in association with Bruno Event Team, start at only $20 and are on sale now. For tickets please visit www.alabamatitlefight.com and www.ticketmaster.com.

The fighters were together at the Conga Room at L.A. Live after Wilder had hosted a press conference in Birmingham the week before, that Arreola joined via skype.

Here is what the fighters had to say Tuesday:

DEONTAY WILDER

“This is going to be an exciting fight for everyone. It’s two dangerous heavyweights. Two guys who fight with their hearts. It’s going to be an action-packed fight from beginning to end.

“People said Arreola doesn’t deserve the shot, but who are they to say things about a man who every time he gets in the ring, fights with his heart.

“I feel like this is a special occasion. It’s a short notice fight. A lot of guys said they would take it, but used the short notice as an excuse. It takes a lot to put together a fight. But when you can get someone who can make the best of this and put on a great show, it’s a job well done.

“There’s only one name who can make this be what it is. Every time he steps in the ring, he comes to fight. I think we chose the right person.

“This is going to be a great fight for boxing fans. I chose to go back home because of all the travel I did preparing for the Povetkin fight. I’m excited to be in my backyard and have the great support behind me. I won’t crack under the pressure.

“The fans will get their money’s worth. It’s two tough and determined fighters who are trying to knock each other’s head off.

“This was my longest layoff. I’ve wanted to be an active champion since I won the belt. When one door closes, another one opens.

“It’s up to Chris to take advantage of this opportunity. He has his own history that he can make and it will mean a lot to him.

“My mentality is to go all out. Everything I say, I really believe. I don’t need anyone to believe in me, because I believe in myself.

“I have a guy in front of me who’s trying to stop me from getting to the next level. I promise this is going to be an outstanding fight.”

CHRIS ARREOLA

“I’m grateful for this opportunity. A lot of people say that I don’t deserve this title fight. A lot of people said Deontay didn’t deserve his title shot. I said that. But when he got it, he made the most out of it. He beat the guy who beat me.

“He’s defended his title and done everything you’re supposed to do as a champion. I respect him a lot. I have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

“I’m going to his backyard. I’m fine with people not recognizing me out there. He’s going to be dealing with ticket requests and I’m just going to be focused on beating Deontay Wilder.

“I’m not fighting the fans, at the end of the day it’s me and Deontay Wilder in that ring. That’s what I know about this sport, there’s a lot of talk, but at the end of the day, it’s mano a mano.

“I’m blessed to have this opportunity and I’m going to make the most of it.”

Sammy Vasquez – Luis Collazo on Wilder – Arreola card

Collazo Cut
Sammy Vasquez will take on former welterweight champion Luis Collazo on July 16th in the co-feature to the Deontay Wilder – Chris Arreola Heavyweight title fight in Birmingham, Alabama, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“This is a great opportunity for me, and I’m looking forward to showcasing my talent and skills,” the 30-year-old Vasquez, of Monessen, Pennsylvania, said. “Luis Collazo is one of the toughest guys I’ve fought so far, and he’s definitely going to test me. My job is to go in there, handle my business and beat him worse than anyone else has. I think our styles will combine for a great battle, and I’m excited to give the people another great fight.”

“I’m totally stoked about this fight against Sammy Vasquez,” said Collazo, who has also faced opponents such as Shane Mosley, Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto. “He is a talented fighter and I’m excited to test his abilities and the will that he has to keep that zero. This will be a good one.”

Undefeated Heavyweight World Champion Deontay Wilder Defends His Title Against Two-Time World Title Challenger Chris Arreola in Premier Boxing Champions on FOX & FOX Deportes Primetime Main Event Saturday, July 16 From Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT)

DEONTAY WILDER
BIRMINGHAM, AL (June 13, 2016) – Undefeated heavyweight world champion Deontay “The Bronze Bomber” Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs) will defend his title in his home state when he battles two-time world title challenger Chris “The Nightmare” Arreola (36-4-1, 31 KOs) in the main event of Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on FOX and FOX Deportes Saturday, July 16 from Legacy Arena at the BJCC in Birmingham, Alabama with televised coverage beginning at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by DiBella Entertainment and TGB Promotions in association with Bruno Event Team, start at only $20 and go on sale tomorrow. For tickets please visit www.alabamatitlefight.com and www.ticketmaster.com.

Wilder returns to the ring after he was set to travel to Russia and defend his title against Alexander Povetkin on May 21 before the challenger failed a drug test that caused a cancellation of the fight. Now, Wilder will showcase his exceptional skills in primetime on network television as he takes on Arreola. It will be Wilder’s fourth defense and third in his home state of Alabama.

“I’m always excited about coming home and being in front of my people where I’m the most comfortable,” said Wilder. “I’ve been traveling a lot, going over to Sheffield, England to train before I was supposed to fight Alexander Povetkin in Moscow. But because of his decision to use a banned substance, the fight didn’t happen. I’m disappointed about that, but it’s not going to stop me from being an active heavyweight world champion. It has also given me the opportunity to again defend my title before my hometown fans. It’s always good to come home.

“This is the longest stretch that I’ve been out of the ring and I’m anxious to get back in and continue my quest to become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world,” continued Wilder. “This is another fight in that process. I respect Chris Arreola for getting into the ring with me, but we all know who the real champion is and I’m going to prove it. I’ve been training long and hard for a fight and now I’m going to take it out on Arreola on July 16.”

“I’m thankful to Deontay for this opportunity, he has proven a great deal by winning the heavyweight title and by defending it three times,” said Arreola. “I’m very excited to step into the ring with him, put on a great show, be victorious and make history by becoming the first Mexican heavyweight world champion.”

“We are thrilled that Deontay will be back in the ring quickly, in primetime on FOX, and at home in Alabama. Chris Arreola knows that this is his last opportunity for heavyweight glory and will likely come out throwing bombs from the opening bell. I expect an explosive, fan friendly fight for as long as it lasts,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment. “In the wake of Povetkin’s positive PED test and the cancellation of that fight, we are happy that Deontay’s next heavyweight title defense will be contested on July 16th and on such a great platform.”

“Chris knows what this fight means, and having been in the position to be the first Mexican heavyweight world champion before, he’s not going to let that chance slip by him again, ” said Tom Brown of TGB Promotions.

“We are excited to work with DiBella Entertainment and TGB Promotions to bring the third heavyweight boxing championship in a little over a year to the state of Alabama,” said Gene Hallman, president and CEO of Bruno Event Team. “We expect tickets for this fight to sell quickly and we encourage Alabama boxing fans to show their support for Deontay.”

“FOX and FOX Deportes are thrilled to be broadcasting the much anticipated heavyweight championship of the world between Deontay Wilder vs. Chris Arreola as part of our partnership with Premier Boxing Champions,” said David Nathanson, FOX Sports Head of Business Operations. “It’s been just over 20 years since FOX presented its last heavyweight headliner, Mike Tyson vs. Buster Mathis. We’re sure this title fight will deliver another amazing PBC show on our networks.”

The heavyweight champion from Tuscaloosa is itching to get back in the ring after defending his title with stoppages of Eric Molina, Johann Duhaupas and most recently a one-punch knockout of Artur Szpilka in January. Before turning pro in November 2008, Wilder won the bronze medal at heavyweight for the U.S. at the 2008 Olympic Games. He is the last American male boxer to medal in the Olympics. The 30-year-old won the belt with a dominant decision over Bermane Stiverne in January 2015. The six-month layoff will be the longest of Wilder’s career. This fight will mark the eighth time Wilder fights in his home state of Alabama as a professional.

Always in exciting fights, the Los Angeles-born Arreola will look to entertain the primetime audience as he takes his third crack at a heavyweight world championship. With victories over Eric Molina, Seth Mitchell, Joey Abell and Jameel McCline plus championship losses to Vitali Klitschko and Bermane Stiverne, he will be one of the most battle-tested opponents of Wilder’s career.

There will be two more hours of boxing on FS1 and FOX Deportes at 10 p.m. ET, immediately following the Wilder vs. Arreola fight on FOX. Further details will be announced shortly.

Povetkin’s “B” sample comes up positive

alexander_povetkin_image
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, former heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin’s “B”sample came up positive for his random drug test for his muted fight against WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Povetkin’s mandatory shot at heavyweight world titleholder Deontay Wilder, scheduled to take place May 21 at the Khodynka Ice Palace in Moscow, was called off after his “A” sample came up positive for meldonium nine days before the fight. The sample had been taken in a random urine test conducted by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association on April 27.

Povetkin, 36, had the right to have his “B” sample tested, and he did. According to the VADA testing report, which was obtained by ESPN.com, it was also positive for meldonium.

Wilder granted optional defense

DEONTAY WILDER
After the positive drug test to Alexander Povetkin, THE WBC has granted Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder the right to make an optional defense, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“In relation to challenger Povetkin’s test result, the WBC is conducting an in-depth investigation and evaluation of the situation. Further WBC rulings will be forthcoming,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said in a statement. “In the meantime, the WBC hereby rules that in light of the fact that the bout with challenger Povetkin did not take place as scheduled, WBC heavyweight world champion Deontay Wilder has the right to make a voluntary defense of his title as reasonably soon as possible.”

“I’m excited to get back in the ring, that’s for sure so everything we worked hard for in the Povetkin camp wasn’t in vain,” Wilder told ESPN.com. “I still have the urge to fight. I didn’t do all that for nothing. Somebody has to pay for it and it’s going to be my next opponent.”

Promoter Lou DiBella told ESPN.com that he and Wilder adviser Al Haymon will immediately turn their attention to lining up a fight for Wilder.

“Deontay went through a whole camp. He wants to get into the ring, so we are going to try to figure something out but I think it’s a fair assumption to say he would fight this summer,” DiBella said. “Obviously, you’re not going to do a fight without television, so we need to see about that. We’re turning our attention to it now that the ruling has been made.

“The WBC did the right thing. I’m pleased and gratified that they did the right thing. I think the WBC is stepping up with their clean boxing program. The WBC has to review everything, but they did the right thing not to handcuff their champion. Deontay wants to fight as often as possible. He has always said he wanted to be an active champion, so it was not an option for him to sit out a long time when this fight fell through. So we want to get something done as soon as possible.”

“I’m always in shape. I’m always ready,” Wilder said. “I had a hell of a camp for this fight (against Povetkin) and I still feel in shape. So I want to fight as soon as possible. I’ll let my team handle that and picking an opponent as well. I want to give the fans something so I definitely want a top opponent.

“Hopefully we can get a great date and a great opponent. We understand it’s short notice but some heavyweight out there is going to get the call, so if you’re in the top 10 be ready.”

Wilder – Povetkin fight off

alexander_povetkin_image
Due to a recent test failure for PED’s by mandatory challenger, Alexander Povetkin, The fight with Povetkin challenging WBC Heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder has set for next Saturday has been postponed by the WBC, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“The World Boxing Council is diligently addressing the positive test result from the [WBC’s] clean boxing program for mandatory challenger Alexander Povetkin,” WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman said in a statement. “Keeping the priority of safety and also the principle of justice, the WBC will continue the investigation into the case. Consequently, the event scheduled for May 21 in Moscow is hereby officially postponed. The WBC will be releasing more information in the coming days regarding the final ruling on the matter.”

“I’m very disappointed that due to Povetkin’s failed drug test the fight is not going to happen on May 21 in Moscow,” Wilder said in a statement. “I had worked very hard to prepare myself for this important title defense, spending the last two weeks training in England to get accustomed to fighting in Europe. I wanted to give the fans a great show, but we understand the WBC’s position that the fight occur on an even playing field.

“This is a huge disappointment and a setback to my goals in boxing. I want to be an active heavyweight champion and it is still my goal to collect all the belts and become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.”

“The guy tested positive for a dangerous drug and the health and safety of Deontay was paramount, so the fight could not take place on May 21,” Wilder promoter Lou DiBella told ESPN.com. “Deontay would have fought King Kong without any regard for what substance was being used, but Povetkin’s use of this banned substance and the breach of the contract deprived Deontay of an opportunity to defend his title on a fair playing field. As a result, Deontay has suffered significant damages.

“He has gone through his entire training camp and expended a tremendous amount of time and money and energy. It’s awful.”

“Any talk from Ryabinsky of a rescheduled date is both unfounded and premature,” DiBella said. “We need to sit back and await further rulings from the WBC, but we will weigh all of our options.”

“He has not taken it since Jan. 1. The situation is ambiguous,” Ryabinsky told Russia’s TASS news agency before the fight was called off. “The blood sample was taken in April this year.”

Povetkin tests positive for banned substance; Wilder fight in Jeopardy

alexander_povetkin_image
Number-one ranked heavyweight contender Alexander Povetkin tested positive for a banned substance, putting his fight title fight with Deontay Wilder, scheduled for next Saturday in Russia in doubt, according to Dan Rafael of espn.com

“This letter is to advise you that the ‘A’ sample urine specimen number 3969608 collected from Alexander Povetkin on April 27, 2016 in Chekhov, Russia through his participation in the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) program has been analyzed for anabolic agents, diuretics, beta-2 agonists, stimulants and drugs of abuse,” Goodman wrote. “The results of the analysis are as follows: Adverse. Urine specimen contains meldonium.”

“Mr. Povetkin has the right to promptly request analysis of the ‘B’ sample at his expense,” Goodman wrote. “Please be aware that VADA does not adjudicate results nor determine whether sanctions are appropriate. As with all results, adverse findings are reported to the relevant commission(s) who may make such determinations.”

“Traces of extremely low concentration of meldonium have been found in his blood. He consumed it in September last year,” Povetkin promoter Andrey Ryabinsky of World of Boxing said, according to the Russian TASS news agency. “He has not taken it since Jan. 1. The situation is ambiguous. The blood sample was taken in April this year. We have been in contact with the World Boxing Council, which is to decide if Povetkin’s boxing bout against Deontay Wilder will take place or not.”

Promoter Lou DiBella, representing Wilder, told ESPN that he and the Wilder team were still gathering information on the situation.

“We literally have received this in the last hour and have not even had a chance to discuss this with our team,” DiBella said. “We’re in the process of doing this right now. But it’s extremely upsetting and disappointing and while I am angry, I am certainly not shocked. We’ll make a more detailed statement and figure things out when we discuss this among ourselves and with the WBC. We haven’t had enough time to digest this. We’ll have more to say later.”

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman issued a statement after learning of Povetkin’s positive test.

“The WBC’s priority is and will always be safety, fair play and justice,” Sulaiman said. “In order to continue to strive for the absolute safety of the boxers and for a just and fair outcome for all parties involved, the WBC is conducting an in-depth investigation of this matter. The WBC will make a public announcement in the very near future concerning the results of its investigation and any appropriate steps that it will take.”

Earlier this week on a media teleconference to discuss the fight, DiBella was asked about the testing.

“Deontay’s always said, a million times, he’s never been hesitant to get involved in testing,” DiBella said. “And we wanted testing to begin, frankly, before it did. But it began with what we believe is plenty of time to make sure that everything is on the up-and-up. There’s been already a number of random tests of both athletes that have turned out negative. So we’re not concerned about that as an issue. And the testing is being done by VADA and they’ve been very buttoned up and everything’s been handled appropriately.

“In a perfect world, we might have liked it to start a little bit earlier, but that’s not an issue. … It’s in the hands of VADA, and we’re very comfortable with it in the hands of VADA.”

“I’m going to tell you right now I am super-excited about going to Moscow, Russia, defending my title,” Wilder said. “You know it seems like every time I turn around — when I have the big stage and the cameras — it’s always a moment for me. And this moment right here’s putting me down in history as the first American ever to defend his title in Russia. And I’m looking to do it in great fashion and to represent my country.”

Just Say Nyet: Wilder’s biggest victory would be a boycott of Russia

By Norm Frauenheim-
DEONTAY WILDER
Deontay Wilder, an emerging champion and a compelling personality, wants to make history. Maybe, he should just make a statement, instead.

Wilder is about to leave for Moscow and become the first American heavyweight champion to defend his title there on May 21 against Alexander Povetkin in a risky venture complicated by ongoing disclosures of Russia’s systematic doping.

Depending on the source and based on a very big assumption that all will be on the up-and-up, the fight is a toss-up. Wilder might win. Might lose. But he would score a victory for everybody – boxers, skaters, skiers, sprinters and swimmers – if he just said, hell no, he won’t go until the Russians clean up their act.

What would he have to lose? Plenty, at first. He’d lose a paycheck. He’d risk lawsuits and his title. The World Boxing Council probably would have no choice but to strip him of the belt. Then, there are crazies in the boxing crowd who would question his guts and his promise to knock out Povetkin.

A Wilder victory on Russian scorecards would have to go down as a contender for Upset of the Year. After all, this is a country that, according to the New York Times, conducted a urine exchange – dirty for clean — though a hole in the wall at the Sochi Olympics.

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/05/13/sports/russia-doping-sochi-olympics-2014.html?_r=0

Yet despite Russia’s Hole In The Wall Gang, there have been no criminal charges while the country continues to move forward on plans for the 2018 World Cup.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/apr/08/russian-doping-scandal-no-criminal-charges-sports-minister

http://www.business-standard.com/article/news-ians/russian-doping-scandals-won-t-impact-2018-world-cup-preparations-116051200324_1.html

The fight will happen two weeks after the WBC announced its Clean Boxing Program, year-round testing that will be administered by the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association President Dr. Margaret Goodman.

Wilder Promoter Lou DiBella said Wednesday during a conference call that testing has been underway for seven to eight weeks. However, DiBella also said he would have preferred to have had the testing begin earlier.

The unfolding scandal probably means the Russians will be very careful not to exchange urine samples like shots of vodka before opening bell next week. The world is watching. But that’s not the point.

Thus far, we’ve heard from bureaucrats representing all of the world’s sporting acronyms. We’ve heard threats to ban Russia’s track-and-field athletes from this summer’s Brazil Olympics. Blah, blah, blah. It’s bupkis, or business as usual after the fight. We’ve yet to hear from an athlete in a substantive way. Enter Wilder, who has a chance to say and do something that – long term – would stand as a courageous triumph.

It wouldn’t be the equivalent of the U.S.-led boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics for Russia’s invasion of Afghanistan. Over time, the boycott, ordered by then-President Jimmy Carter, has been judged to be a mistake. Athletes were caught in the middle, forced to pay a price for an international confrontation they didn’t create.

But state-run doping is all about the athletes. It puts their integrity, livelihood and health in jeopardy.

The heavyweights have a rich history of making a real difference. Jack Johnson broke the color line before Jackie Robinson, becoming the first African-American to win the heavyweight title during an era that spawned The Great White Hope. Joe Louis knocked out Germany’s Max Schmeling in a 1938 rematch that came to symbolize the coming world war between democracy and fascism. Muhammad Ali was stripped of his title and license when he refused to be drafted because of his opposition to Viet Nam.

They are remembered for how they responded when confronted by events, each in their own time. It’s Wilder’s time.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION DEONTAY WILDER MEDIA WORKOUT QUOTES FROM NORTHPORT, ALABAMA

DEONTAY WILDER
NORTHPORT, ALA. (April 21, 2016) -Undefeated WBC Heavyweight World Champion Deontay Wilder hosted a media workout Tuesday at the Skyy Gym in Northport, Ala. as he prepares to become the first reigning American heavyweight champion to travel to Russia to defend his title.

In exactly one month, on Saturday, May 21, Wilder (36-0, 35 KOs), of Tuscaloosa, Ala., will put his world title on the line against mandatory challenger and native Russian, Alexander Povetkin (30-1, 22 KOs), in Moscow.

Here’s what Wilder said at his Media Workout day on Tuesday:

DEONTAY WILDER

(On his expectations going to Russia…)

“My expectation is, of course, to win. To come back with that victory for America. This is a big fight, not just for myself, for America. It’s like Russia vs. America. I’ve been getting nothing but positive feedback from fans all over. Even if they weren’t a fan of Deontay Wilder they are now for this very fight. Hopefully I can win them over to stay a fan of Deontay Wilder after this fight. I think it’s a great fight. I think it’s a great thing that we’re going over to Russia defending my title in somebody else’s backyard.

“Like I said before, it’s easier for me to fight here in American but that’s not what it’s all about to me. When I have a title that says the heavyweight champion of the world, I want to travel all over the world to defend my title. I’m living my dream, I’m getting an opportunity to do that with this fight. I’m looking forward to Russia and I want to tell Russia,’Here I come.’ ”

(What it means to be the first heavyweight champion to fight in Russia…)

“It means a lot. It makes me even closer to my faith. God doesn’t make mistakes in lives. He doesn’t make a mistake in my life, your life or anybody else. Things happen for a reason and they happen at the right time in your life. Things may not come when you want it, but when they come it’s right on time. The things that have been accumulating throughout my career, it’s been amazing. How I’ve been able to make history, beat other records, and continue to make history. It’s amazing. I just want to know what else he has in store for my life. If it’s continuously history being made, what’s next? I’m excited.

“I can’t wait to see how my life unfolds at the end of my career. What happens at the end of Deontay Wilder when it’s time for him to say I’ve done all I’ve done in this sport and I don’t want to do it anymore. I want to see how much ground I can cover for those that have come before me.”

(How you predict the fight going…)

“I predict the fight as being a punishment in the first round and then knocking him out. All heavyweights want to knock somebody out so we have to say we’re going to knock them out. This is the cream of the crop division. The heavyweights. The hard-hitters. The heavy hitters, as they say. When we step in that ring, nothing is acceptable but a knockout. And I’m looking to knock him out.”

(On if he’s reached his peak…)

“Not at all and that’s the scary part about it. I haven’t even reached my peak yet and I’m still learning on the way up. I want to always learn. Each and every fight brings experience to me. It brings something that I’ve taken away from that fight and that I’ve added to the next fight. Looking forward to being very crisp and very good in this fight and showing people a little bit more of what Deontay Wilder is capable of. Especially those who haven’t seen anything thus far yet, stay tuned to this fight. This is one you don’t want to miss.”

(On unifying the titles in the future…)

“Most definitely. I really feel when I say that I will be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, I don’t just say it to say it, but I also feel it inside me, deep inside me that I will be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world and add my name to the few undisputed champions that have come before me. My name will be placed in history on that. Why wouldn’t it? All the things I’ve done up to now, that will be the icing on my cake to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. I won’t stop, no matter how many hours I have to put in. No matter how many fights that I have to take. No matter how many countries I have to visit to defend my title. I will be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.”

(On concerns about going to Russia…)

“I don’t have any concerns. I don’t let my brain sit back and think about if I don’t knock him out or are they going to rob me, or anything like that. I just don’t want my mind to be on that when I’m in a fight. I want to have a clear mind. I want to go in there and do what Deontay is capable of doing. Like I said, all things are in God’s hands and if it’s in his will for me to win, it’s going to happen. If not then, I don’t stop there. My legacy is not going to stop there. But I’m very confident in what I’m about to do and what I’m going to do, and we all know that if we knock him out then we don’t have to worry about that. So of course that’s going to be my priority on my list – to knock him out.”

WILDER V POVETKIN WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON BOXNATION

DEONTAY WILDER
BoxNation will broadcast exclusively live in the UK Deontay Wilder’s WBC World Heavyweight title defence against Alexander Povetkin from Moscow, Russia, on Saturday 21st May.

The undefeated American superstar puts his title on the line for the fourth time against the Russian mandatory challenger and former WBA World Champion at the Khodynka Ice Palace.

In a real life re-enactment of the iconic Rocky IV movie that saw Rocky Balboa head to Russia and face the indestructible Ivan Drago, Wilder must enter hostile territory after Povetkin’s promoters won the purse bid to stage the fight on home soil.

The dynamite-punching and brash Wilder, 30, has lit up the heavyweight division with his explosive performances that have seen him stop all but one of his 36 opponents with a staggering 28 coming inside three rounds.

Since winning the WBC crown from Berman Stiverne in January last year, the ‘Bronze Bomber’ has made title defences against Eric Molina, Johann Dhaupas and Artur Szpilka and won all by stoppage, but now faces the most difficult challenge of his career.

Povetkin, 36, a former world class amateur winning Gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and 2003 World Championships, won the WBA World title in 2001 by defeating Ruslan Chagaev in 2011 and made title defences against Cedric Boswell, Marco Huck, Hasim Rahman and Andrzej Wawrzyk – winning three out of four by stoppage.

A unification showdown against then division king Wladimir Klitschko, the IBF, WBO, WBA Super World Champion followed in October 2013 and despite being floored four times in the fight, Povetkin took Klitschko the full distance only to lose on the judges’ scorecards, which remains his sole career defeat. Since then he’s knocked-out his last four opponents to earn his world title shot.

Chief-support on the card sees two-time WBA World Cruiserweight Champion Dennis Lebedev in a unification battle against IBF World Champion Victor Emilio Ramirez.

Further big live world title action coming up on the Channel of Champions in April sees Eduard Troyanovsky and Cesar Rene Cuenca clash in a highly anticipated rematch on Friday 8th April from the Krylia Sovetov in Moscow, Russia.

Russian Troyanovsky beat Argentinean Cuenca last November, halting him in six rounds with many feeling that the fight was stopped too early and now they collide again with the IBF and IBO World Super-Lightweight titles on the line.

On Saturday 16th April live coverage comes from The Barclays Centre, New York, when WBO World Cruiserweight Champion Krzysztof Glowacki makes the opening defence of his title against former two-time IBF World Champion Steve Cunningham.

Glowacki won the title in a thriller in his last fight against Marco Huck last August when he stopped the German based Serbian in the eleventh round, live on BoxNation.

Huck dropped Pole Glowacki in the sixth round and was ahead on the scorecards before Glowacki found a big punch to floor Huck in the eleventh, it could have been stopped by the referee, but he was given a chance to continue and Glowacki steamed in to get the stoppage.

Also on the card fast rising star and 2012 U.S Olympian Errol Spence aims to become the first fighter to stop former world champion Chris Algieri in a 10-round welterweight showdown.

challenger for the WBC featherweight world title, Celaya, Mexico’s Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos (23-11, 13 KOs) started his journey to become a champion very differently in 2014. Coming off a loss to Rene “Gemelo” Alvarado in February 2014, Castellanos followed it up with a dominant victory over Ronny Rios in October 2014, stopping the then-unbeaten prospect in the fifth round. Castellanos continued to show his power in January of 2015 facing the warrior Rocky Juarez for the chance to win the WBC Silver Featherweight title and become the mandatory challenger for the WBC Featherweight World Championship. Both fighters showed a lot of heart and put on one of the bloodiest fights of 2015, but it was Castellanos’ dominance that was on display as his powerful jabs, brutal uppercuts and well-timed counter-punching knocked down Juarez in the fifth and twice in the 10th round to win via unanimous decision with scores of 118-106, 118-106 and 118-107. Now, Castellanos is the WBC Feather World Championship mandatory challenger.

Tureano Johnson: A native of Nassau in the Bahamas, 31-year-old Tureano Johnson (19-1, 13 KOs) proudly represented his nation in the 2008 Olympics, making it to the quarterfinals in Beijing. In 2010, he turned professional and soared up the middleweight ladder before a controversial 2014 loss to Curtis Stevens. Undeterred, Johnson has since won five fights, four by knockout, and is one of the newest members of the Golden Boy Promotions roster. In his first fight since signing with Golden Boy Promotions, Johnson gave the fans a thrilling performance in the undercard of Gennaday Golovkin vs. David

Antonio “Relentless” Orozco

Lemieux at Madison Square Garden on October 17, 2015. Antonio “Relentless” Orozco: Unbeaten as a professional, San Diego’s Antonio “Relentless” Orozco (23-0, 15 KOs) made his move to the elite level of the super lightweight division in 2015. In May, Orozco defeated fellow rising star Emmanuel “Tranzformer” Taylor in Phoenix, but the best was yet to come, as he decisioned multi-division world champion Humberto “La Zorrita” Soto in their October bout at StubHub Center.

Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz: On Dec. 19, at Turing Stone Resort Casino inVerona,New York, Luis “The Real King Kong” Ortiz (24-0, 21 KOs) defended his WBA Interim Heavyweight World Championship against one of the toughest fighters in the division, Bryant “By – By” Jennings in a fantastic display of boxing skill with a dramatic seventh round knockout of the former world champion challenger Jennings. The victory allowed Ortiz to keep his undefeated status but also made a loud announcement to the boxing community that a new heavyweight threat had arrived to the division. This fight catapulted Ortiz on the heavyweight pound-for-pound list debuting at number five.

Michael “The Artist” Perez: Undefeated since 2012, exciting New Jersey native Michael “The Artist” Perez (23-1-2, 11 KOs) had one of the biggest years of his career in 2015, as he decisioned always toughMiguel “Aguacerito” Acosta in January and then knocked out Luis “Chespi” Sanchez in six rounds in July to win the vacant NABO lightweight title.

Ronny Rios: After suffering the first loss of his career to Robinson “Robin Hood” Castellanos in 2014, Santa Ana, California’s Ronny Rios (25-1, 10 KOs) came back more determined than ever in 2015, and his performances in defeating Sergio “El Frio” Frias and previously unbeaten Jayson “Star” Velez proved that this 25-year-old was ready for prime time again.

BROOKLYN–Deontay Wilder retained the WBC Heavyweight title with emphatic one punch 9th round stoppage over Artur Szpilka before an announced crowd of 12,608 at Barclays Center.

Wilder_Szpilka 1 (640x427)
It was a close fight throughout with Szpilka trying to score with little jabs and right hooks. Everytime he would connect, it would draw a large roar from the thousands of Polish fans in attendance. Wilder started to get going in the middle rounds as he kept landing hard right hands that Szpilka took well. That was until round nine, when Wilder unleashed a perfect right to the jaw that sent Szpilka down and out. Szpilka would be down with his eyes closed for several minutes until he regained his wits.

Wilder_Szpilka 2 (640x427)
The bout was stopped at 2:24 of round nine.

Wilder, 228.7 lbs of Tuscaloosa, AL is now 36-0 with 35 knockouts. Szpilka, 233.2 lbs of Houstin, TX is now 20-2.

Post fight quotes:

RONNIE SHIELDS:

“He’s doing good, He’s awake and knows exactly where he is. He didn’t want to go to the hospital but he’s going as a precaution. It’s better safe than sorry.”

DEONTAY WILDER:

I told him he was a great contender. He came to gave his all. He gave his all for Brooklyn.

“I always say two prayers,” Wilder said. “I say a team prayer and I say an individual prayer. I don’t want to hurt a man so he can’t go home to his family. We risk our lives every time we step in the ring. He’s definitely in my prayers and I hope he’s doing well.

“He was definitely a crafty guy. I haven’t competed against a southpaw in three years. He was a tough competitor, but you’re fighting for a world title. It’s not supposed to be easy. I’m surprised it took that long, but we had 12 rounds and they can’t all can’t be pretty.

“We all know Fury is just a phony. This is just an act. I’m not scared of any body. We’ll come to your back yard. This is just an act – you’re not a real fighter. I don’t play. This isn’t wrestling. This isn’t the WWE. When you do step in that ring with me I promise you I will baptize you.

“I would love to fight him next, unfortunately. I have other mandatories due. Make the date Tyson, I promise you.”

FURY:

“Any time, any place anywhere. I’ll fight you in your back yard after I beat (Wladimir) Klitschko again.
