LEGEND FROCH BACKS SAUNDERS TO DETHRONE GOLOVKIN

Carl Froch
British boxing great Carl Froch says WBO Middleweight King Billy Joe Saunders has the skills to take out Kazakh middleweight king Gennady Golovkin.

Froch, a four-time super-middleweight world champion, refuses to jump on the GGG bandwagon and has backed the undefeated Saunders to prove he is the world’s true middleweight champion.

Speaking to The Sun, the retired super-middleweight supremo said: “I’m not putting Golovkin on this pedestal that everyone has him on. Who has he beaten that Billy Joe couldn’t? His reputation is inflated. He’s obviously a very good fighter and can punch very hard but he’s a small middleweight,

“Beat somebody who is quality, beat him in style and I’ll start talking about you like you’re the next Sugar Ray Leonard or something.”

Froch added: “When I watch Golovkin, I see him getting hit with shots. He walks through them to land his but he’s wide open coming forward.”

The Jimmy Tibbs trained Hatfield star, 23-0-0 12 KO’s, makes the first defence of his world title against Golovkin’s compatriot ‘Mad’ Max Bursak; a man who boasts wins over British Champion Nick Blackwell and Brian Vera.

Saunders has previously expressed his desire to take on Golovkin in a massive summer showdown at the Emirates or Wembley and is now even more determined to nail down a lucrative world title unification fight.

He said: “Since I’ve won the world title I’ve grown in confidence. Having a man of Carl Froch’s experience backing me to win has given me even more of a boost. Carl Froch was one of the best fighters about so for him to say that is something. I already know in myself that I’ve got the beating of Golovkin with the right tactics.”

WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders makes the first defence of his title against “Mad” Max Bursak and headlines an action-packed card that also features: The Vacant European Cruiserweight title between Ovill McKenzie and Dmytro Kucher; Ryan Walsh defends his British Featherweight Championship against James Tennyson; Anthony Nelson defends his Commonwealth Super-Flyweight Championship against Jamie Conlon. On the undercard fast rising undefeated heavyweight sensation Hughie Fury, Erith super-bantamweight Lewis Pettitt; Chingford super-featherweight Boy Jones Jnr; Indian middleweight sensation Vijender Singh; Chelmsford super-middleweight Billy Long, West Ham super-welterweight Sammy McNess; Sidcup super-featherweight D.P Carr; West Ham super-lightweight Ben Smith; Hornchurch super-lightweight Sanjeev Sahota; Nantwich heavyweight Nathan Gorman and Enfield super-middleweight Barney Joe Jones, all feature.

Billy Joe Saunders
WBO World Middleweight King Billy Joe Saunders is eyeing up a huge Wembley summer showdown with pound-for-pound megastar Gennady Golovkin should he get past ‘Mad’ Max Bursak.

The Hatfield ace is fully focused on the first defence of his world title against the Kazakh terror on Saturday 30th April at the Copper Box Arena, but is determined to prove himself against the ‘big man’ of the division.

“Now I’ve become a world champion I’ve grown in myself and grown in my beliefs,” said Saunders.

“Nobody is invincible, you only have to look at Tyson Fury who went over and done Klitschko in his back garden,”

“If I could get Golovkin at Wembley Stadium, which would be a massive fight, I’d show the world I can beat the best.”

WBO World Middleweight Champion Billy Joe Saunders makes the first defence of his title against “Mad” Max Bursak and headlines an action-packed card that also features: The Vacant European Cruiserweight title between Ovill McKenzie v Dmytro Kucher; Ryan Walsh defends his British Featherweight Championship against James Tennyson. GOLOVKIN’S WORLD TITLE DEFENCE AGAINST WADE EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON BOXNATION

Gennady Golovkin
Boxing superstar Gennady Golovkin returns exclusively live to BoxNation on Saturday 23rd April when he defends his unified world titles against top undefeated contender Dominic Wade at the Fabulous Forum, Los Angeles.

The pound-for-pound great is back on the The Channel of Champions, headlining an awesome April of fistic entertainment that features Golovkin’s big rival Billy Joe Saunders – with both heading towards a seismic collision this year – defending his WBO World Middleweight title against “Mad” Max Burbank on Saturday 30th April, live from the Copper Box Arena, London.

More big live fight action in April sees the thunderous, punching, all-action, British star Liam Williams defending his British and Commonwealth Super-Welterweight titles against Nav Mansouri on Saturday 2nd April from Harrow, England.

Undefeated Golovkin has destroyed 31 out of 34 opponents – an incredible 91% KO ratio – and the fearsome Kazakh puts his WBA Super, Interim WBC and IBF World Middleweight titles on the line for the 16th time – the second highest in the 160lb division’s history – against Wade and will aim to remain on course for a showdown with Saunders this year to unify all four belts.

Wade, from Largo, Maryland, is the mandatory challenger for GGG’s IBF World title and is undefeated in 18 fights with 12 knockouts. In his last fight he defeated from IBF World Champion Sam Soliman and goes into the showdown against Golovkin looking to cause a tremendous upset.

BoxNation viewers have been treated this year to the world’s best fighters all featuring on the channel with Sergey Kovalev, Terrence Crawford, Andre Ward on March 26th against Sulivan Barrera and now Golovkin.

But on the same card as Golovkin, arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world Roman Gonzalez, the WBC World Flyweight Champion, will defend his title against McWilliams Arroyo.

The Nicaraguan hot-shot has an incredible unbeaten record of 44 wins with 38 KO’s and has left a trail of destruction in the last two and half years with ten-fight KO run.

BoxNation’s Managing Director Jim McMunn is thrilled to have the top three pound-for-pound best: Gonzalez, Golovkin and Kovalev plus the 6th and 9th placed Ward and Crawford all on BoxNation in the first four months of this year.

He said, “That will be some feat to have five of the ten best fighters in the world by April all live on BoxNation and really cements our position as THE channel to watch boxing’s biggest names. Having Golovkin on BoxNation is fantastic, but with Gonzalez also on the card, the number one and two on the planet, it is fantastic for our subscribers to get to see these greats in action, live.”

Planting Time: How about a Canelo-GGG guarantee next to that olive tree?

By Norm Frauenheim-
Saul Alvarez
World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman says an olive tree will be planted amid the neon surrounding Las Vegas’ new T-Mobile Arena during the week of the Canelo Alvarez-Amir Khan fight on May 7.

The tree, Sulaiman says, will be a symbol of peace and unity. It’s a nice idea. But few would confuse boxing with peace or unity. It’s about imminent violence. It’s why we watch.

It’s why we watch Donald Trump, too. Trump’s sneers, profanity and insults are straight out of a boxing news conference. That shouldn’t be a surprise. Trump learned the schtick as a business partner with Don King during the days when Mike Tyson fought in Atlantic City.

Are those debates getting huge ratings because people want to hear what Ted Cruz and John Kasich say? Didn’t think so. The network could sell the debates, pay-per-view, because Trump’s rhetoric heightens the drama, if not the sense that his over-the-top talk threatens to a degenerate into a real brawl.

Trump even went so far as to defend his manhood on Fox Thursday night. It was his response to Marco Rubio’s crack about his small hands. He sounded a lot like Tyson once did. Tyson has grown up since then. Too bad Trump hasn’t. Come to think of it, Trump could learn a lot from Tyson, who is lot more statesman-like these days than the presidential candidate with more insults than answers.

Trouble is, we all seem to be living in Trump’s world. After all, Trump’s angry rhetoric is the real reason Sulaiman said he plans to plant that olive tree. Everybody with something to say and sell is on the Trump bandwagon for the number of hits the mere mention of him generates in social media.

Even Oscar De La Hoya tossed out the Trump name during a Canelo-Khan press tour that stopped in London, New York and Los Angeles. De La Hoya says he actually decided to put together Canelo-versus-Khan – Catholic-versus-Muslim – while watching Trump channel Don Rickles during one of those debates. It’s a good story. It’s better marketing, a sure way to generate hits and tweets. Maybe a few olives, too.

Here’s one request of Sulaiman: Next to that tree, plant a guarantee that there will be an immediate Canelo-Gennady Golovkin fight if – as expected – Canelo beats Khan.

A lot of things were said during the Canelo-Khan tour. But when the inevitable question about Canelo-GGG was asked, the answer was always — and only — an assurance that it would happen. No specifics and no real time frame were included. Maybe, an olive tree represents a peaceful counter to Trump.

But boxing needs more than an olive branch. It needs Canelo-GGG. Without it, there won’t be much to harvest in its immediate future.

“Gennady and Roman were each dominant in their knockout performances on October 17 and we sold out Madison Square Garden with 20,548 fans in attendance. Last May 16, at our first event at the Fabulous Forum 12,732 tickets were sold. Right now were on pace to have another sold out arena of over 16,000 tickets on April 23. This would be the first sellout of the Fabulous Forum for a boxing event since 1970.”

Following a cross-country press tour from Los Angeles to New York City, Golovkin and Gonzalez have opened up training camps in Big Bear Lake, California and Managua, Nicaragua, respectively.

“Gennady has that unique quality of putting on great performances in the ring and being able to sell out arenas across the country,” said Loeffler.

Here are the quotes from the participants.

Gennady “GGG” Golovkin
“This is a big opportunity for Dominic Wade, I remember what it was like before I became a champion, I’m sure he’s very hungry for this opportunity and will train hard.”

“Bernard Hopkins has a great record of title defenses, but my focus is not on his record but on my story.”

“This is my next step and I’m very excited to continue building my story. I have a great deal of respect for Dominic. I look forward to fighting at my second home, the Forum on April 23.”

“It’s a joke for Billy Jo Saunders to want to face me right after we announced this fight, he’s not serious.”

“I want to fight Canelo and many big fights, big shows, but it’s not frustrating for me to
face other fighters.”

Dominic Wade
“I’m ready for this, people ask if I’m nervous, not at all. I’ve been a fighter all my life, always wanted to be a world champion. When this opportunity came up I was so excited I could have run 30 miles.”

“I know how good Gennady is but I’ll be ready on April 23 to be victorious and show the world who the best middleweight is.”

“I see flaws in his game that I can take advantage of. He’s very strong but also very basic in
some ways.”

Tom Loeffler/K2 Promotions
“Our philosophy has always been to work with any manager or promoter for Gennady. We did this deal within a week working with Al Haymon and Tom Brown.”

“From a commercial standpoint, the fight is bigger if Gennady and Canelo both win their upcoming fights.”

“Gennady is the first non-Puerto Rican fighter to sell out Madison Square Garden in many years.”

“Building his commercial appeal internationally, Gennady’s becoming a much bigger star.”

“I have to continue to have multiple options when putting together fights for Gennady.”

“With Gennady’s commercial value we can make lucrative offers such as we did for
Billy Jo Saunders.”

“My commitment to Gennady is to work towards him becoming the undisputed middleweight champion.”

Jerry Vines/Manager of Wade
“Thanks to Al Haymon who brought us to this fight for which we had no hesitation. They could have fought someone else but they wanted the fight and we wanted the fight.

Much thanks to Dominic for taking the fight, he was very excited when offered this challenge.”
We got this done in a week which tells you how excited we were to make this fight.”

Abel Sanchez, Trainer of Golovkin
“I have to remind everyone as Gennady says, he wants all four middleweight belts, so It’s not hard to keep him focused. This keeps him motivated, he wants to be the undisputed middleweight champion. No way was he going to give up the IBF belt.”

Wade is not spectacular but he is undefeated, I’ve followed him since he was an amateur. We’ll prepare for the best middleweight in the world and we’ll be ready.”

“It’s a big part of history to break Bernard Hopkins’ record and will be great for Gennady’s record. Wade is the next step; we’re going to prepare for the utmost. “

Jay Stancil/Trainer of Wade
“We will be ready and prepared for this moment. We’ve already started training and we’re ready to pull the upset and shock the world. Dominic is hungry to win the world title and he will be ready to on April 23.”

GGG’s waiting game has gone on too long

By Norm Frauenheim-
Gennady Golovkin
Gennady Golovkin is the pound for-pound champion in waiting. Emphasis on the waiting.

No telling when that wait will end. But it got a predictable, yet tiresome extension with the announcement last week that Canelo Alvarez will fight Amir Khan on May 7.

Golovkin has little choice but to stay busy, prepared and hopeful for a shot at Canelo later in the year, perhaps September. GGG management looked up and down the list of options and was left with an April 23 bout against Dominic Wade, who landed the mandatory shot at GGG’s middleweight title when the IBF’s No. 1-rated Tureano Johnson withdrew because of a shoulder injury.

Never heard of Wade? Didn’t think so. Then again, Johnson, of the Bahamas, isn’t exactly a name that generates a buzz. More like: Who’s he?

It’s all-too-familiar and thoroughly unfair to GGG, who is spending his prime in the waiting room. He’ll be 34 on April 8, 15 days before his pound-for-pound skill figures to make a wreck out of Wade.

There’s nobody to blame but a business ruled by the so-called A-side, B-side equation that, in the end, often adds up to rubbish.

Canelo is making GGG wait because he can. Canelo is projected to be the sport’s next pay-per-view star. The evidence of that was in the 900,000 buys he generated in his victory over Miguel Cotto in November. GGG can only counter with the 150,000 PPV number he posted in his last outing, a stoppage of David Lemieux in October.

The difference gives Canelo 750,000 reasons he can tell GGG to wait, wait all over again. Publically, at least, each side of the promotional and management equation has assured a skeptical fan base that Canelo-GGG will happen. A possible date, Sept. 17, and even a place, the Dallas Cowboys NFL Stadium, have been reported.

But there are doubts. Canelo’s decision to face Khan raises questions about whether he really wants to fight a true 160 pounder. He’ll fight Khan, a junior-welterweight just a few years ago, at the familiar 155-pound catch-weight for the WBC title he took from Cotto.

Canelo is called the lineal middleweight champion. Trace the title from Sergio Martinez to Cotto and Canelo, and, yeah, it’s lineal. The catch, however, is how that line of succession has been corrupted by the weight. Canelo might be the lineal champ, but GGG is the real one.

The unresolved issue is whether Canelo will come off the 155-pound marker and agree to fight GGG at the traditional 160.

Even if he does the expected and overwhelms Khan, there still won’t be a fight against a true middleweight contender on Canelo’s resume. If Canelo struggles to beat Khan, then what? If he loses, GGG management might regret the day that Andre Ward decided to go up to light-heavy in anticipation of a potential pound-for-pound confrontation with Sergey Kovalev.

Canelo’s bargaining power has been met with some early moves from GGG’s K2 brain trust. In Wade, Tom Loeffler created potential leverage, which could lead to a very big middleweight fight in its own right if the Canelo possibility falls apart. Wade’s promoter is Al Haymon, who also happens to promote Daniel Jacobs.

Jacobs is coming off his stunning, first-round stoppage of Peter Quillin for a piece of the middleweight title.

“From our side, there wouldn’t be any obstacles to making that fight,” Loeffler told The Ring’s Mitch Abramson.

Call it a warning shot and an acknowledgement that GGG can’t wait much longer.

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN VS. DOMINIC WADE World Middleweight Championship Saturday, April 23 at the Forum Televised Live on HBO

Gennady Golovkin
Los Angeles, CA (February 10, 2016) Boxing Superstar and Unified Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will make his highly anticipated return to the Fabulous Forum on Saturday, April 23 to defend his world titles against undefeated, mandatory challenger Dominic “Lights Out” Wade. The event will be televised Live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Presented by K2 Promotions and GGG Promotions in association with TGB Promotions, advance tickets for “UNDEFEATED”, priced at $400, $300, $200, $100, $60 and $30, will go on-sale Tuesday, February 16 at 12:00 p.m. PT through Ticketmaster (Ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000) and the Forum Box Office. A world class undercard will be announced shortly.

“I’m happy to fight again at the Forum in front of my fans and friends in Los Angeles. Dominic Wade is a very hungry and skilled middleweight who is undefeated and will be another big test for me,” said Golovkin. “Thanks to my Coach Abel Sanchez, my promoter Tom Loeffler, my team, HBO and the Forum for another opportunity to defend my middleweight titles.”

Stated Wade, “I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to fight ‘GGG’ for the IBF Middleweight Championship on April 23rd! I’ve worked hard my entire career to get to this point. I’m poised and ready to take on the challenge. I thank my Manager Jerry Vines, #TeamWade and all of my trainers, opponents and supporters for preparing me for this moment.”

“We’re excited to announce Gennady’s next world title defense against Dominic Wade along with his return to the Fabulous Forum, “said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. “Since fighting at the Stubhub Center in October 2013, the Southern California boxing fans have embraced Gennady as the biggest ticket seller in the State and we’re expecting another massive crowd and an outstanding night on April 23.”

“The Fabulous Forum has been the Southern California home for decades to the biggest stars in the sports and entertainment world and we’re honored to add ‘GGG’ to that distinguished list.”

Stated Tom Brown of TGB Promotions about the world title fight, “Dominic is a young and hungry middleweight with an outstanding amateur pedigree that jumped at an opportunity so many have avoided”

“Knockout excitement in the ring has grown synonymous for fans with just one letter repeated three times, ‘GGG,’ and Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin doesn’t look to disappoint in his 2016 debut headlining a World Championship Boxing event from the historic Forum in Inglewood, CA,” said Peter Nelson, Executive Vice President, HBO Sports. “His challenger, Dominic Wade, has a career-defining opportunity in front of him to usurp stardom with an upset, and we know he will bring his A-game on April 23.”

Said Dana Dufine of the Forum, “We’re excited to welcome championship boxing and ‘GGG’ back to the ‘Fabulous’ Forum in April. Our reimagined venue boasts decades of rich boxing history and Golovkin added to that storied history with his knockout of Willie Monroe here in May. We, along with fight fans worldwide, can’t wait to see him go toe-to-toe with Dominic Wade.”

Following a memorable year which saw three outstanding knockout performances, Golovkin, (34-0, 31KOs) was lauded by numerous media platforms worldwide as the 2015 Fighter of the Year.

Commencing the year with a dominant performance on February 23, 2015 against #1 ranked contender, Martin Murray, Golovkin made his third appearance in Monaco where he has also become a fan favorite. Displaying his full arsenal of weaponry and with two earlier knockdowns of Murray, Golovkin earned the stoppage in the 11th round against the valiant native of the United Kingdom who had never been knocked down or stopped previously.

Three months later on May 16, Golovkin made his triumphant return to Los Angeles with a sixth round knockout of Willie Monroe at the Forum in front of a huge crowd of 12,732.

On October 17, before a sold-out crowd of 20,548 at Madison Square Garden, Golovkin dismantled IBF Middleweight Champion David Lemieux with an exhilarating eighth round stoppage in his fourth appearance at the ‘Mecca of Boxing.’” After winning the title, the IBF ordered Golovkin to make his mandatory world title defense against the leading contender, Dominic Wade.

The victory over Lemieux unified the middleweight world titles as Golovkin added the IBF belt to his collection of the previously won WBA, IBO and WBC “Interim” straps. It was also his 15th world title defense and 21st knockout in a row, extending his knockout ratio to 91.2% and one step closer to breaking Bernard Hopkins’ record of 20 consecutive middleweight world title defenses.

The 25-year-old Dominic Wade, (18-0, 12KO’s), was an outstanding amateur as a four-time Junior Olympic Champion and a participant in the 2007 Olympic Boxing Trials.

In 2014, Wade was very active scoring four victories in dominant fashion. The Largo, Maryland native is coming off an impressive victory over former world champion Sam Soliman on June 26, 2015.

SAUNDERS FANTASTIC RECEPTION AT ARSENAL

Billy Joe Saunders
Billy Joe Saunders was thrilled with his reception at Arsenal on Saturday and says the next time he steps on the pitch he wants to be fighting Gennady Golovkin or Chris Eubank Jnr.

The big Gooners fan went on the pitch at half-time for the Burnley game and was given a roaring welcome by the supporters in recognition of his fantastic win over Andy Lee to take the WBO World Middleweight title in December.

Hatfield ace Saunders then sat back and watched his side storm through to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win and continue on their chase for a third successive trophy.

The undefeated 26-year-old says he’d love to fight at the Emirates and his targets would be Kazakhstani terror and IBF, WBC and WBA Super World Middleweight Champion Golovkin or former victim Eubank Jnr who he defeated in November 2014.

“It was a truly unbelievable feeling stepping onto the pitch where my heroes play week in and week out and to get that welcome from the fans made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up,” Said Saunders.

“I’ve been to the ground many times before and previously to Highbury, but this was the first time I’ve been introduced to the crowd and it was a tremendous feeling. I thought that nothing could come close to the amazing feeling I had when I was crowned world champion after beating Lee in Manchester, but last Saturday at Arsenal came very very close to it,”

“The next time I’m here I either want to be playing as Arsenal’s new signing or a more realistic option is to fight Golovkin or Eubank. Golovkin would be an tremendous fight for British boxing. Muhammad Ali fought Henry Cooper at Highbury so in this new millennium what better than a super-unification fight between me and Golovkin? I know he was at West Ham the other week, but the Emirates is the place it has to be at. As for Eubank Jnr, he’s already had his backside kicked by me, what better than me kicking it again in front of 60,000 at Arsenal!”

Johnson injures shoulder; out of contention for April Golovkin bout

Taureano Johnson
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, IBF Middleweight mandatory contender injured his shoulder and will not be available for a potential bout with world Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin.

“Tureano will come to the States for a second opinion,” said Eric Gomez of Golden Boy Promotions. “But for the time being the fight with GGG is off. We will not allow him to fight until he is 100 percent medically cleared.”

Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler would like a fight with Canelo Alvarez in May, but that apparently will not happen.

“GGG and Canelo fighting in May would make a lot of sense,” Loeffler said, “but it would be up to the Canelo/Golden Boy side to do it.”

Golovkin in talks for Saunders unification bout

Gennady Golovkin
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin is in talks for a Spring unification bout with Billy Joe Saunders.

“We made a significant offer to Frank Warren as it is still GGG’s priority to unify all the middleweight titles,” Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler told ESPN.com. “The unification fight with Billy Joe Saunders would be at the top of the list for the next fight. They are interested but no response yet.”

“Saunders just had a big win over Andy Lee, and this fight would generate a lot of worldwide interest,” Loeffler said.

“We have been in communication with Gennady Golovkin’s people, who have approached us with a firm offer of a unification fight with Triple G,” said Saunders’ promoter Frank Warren. “I know Billy Joe has intimated he may not be quite ready for this, but money talks louder than anything in boxing and such are the sums involved it is one certainly worth considering.

“We will be sitting down to talk about the future with Billy Joe once he has enjoyed his break. He has some really tasty options out there, and whatever happens we will come up with something really special.”

“Madison Square Garden is very interested in bringing back GGG as he is the first one to completely sell out MSG for a while for boxing,” said Loeffler, who was referring to the capacity crowd of 20,548 that Golovkin drew for the fight with Lemieux. “Texas [venues are] also very interested in hosting a GGG fight there for the first time and, naturally, The Forum in L.A.”

Canelo and Golovkin to take interim fights

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Middleweight champions Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have agreed to take interim fights before trying to put together a mega-fight with each other for 2016.

“If after their corresponding voluntary defenses one boxer is unable to fight the other for the undisputed WBC middleweight championship of the world, the unable fighter will lose his status as champion or interim champion,” said WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman. “The fighter able to fight will be named undisputed WBC world champion.

“Canelo versus GGG is one of the most important events in the sport of boxing, and their promotional companies and partners have been communicating openly and in good faith. The ultimate goal of all involved is to make certain that the best conditions are secured for their fighters and the boxing world, and to preserve their full commitment to abide by, and respect, the governing WBC rules and regulations.”

“Do we want to do the fight with Golovkin? Absolutely,” said Golden Boy vice-president Eric Gomez told ESPN.com. “It will come down to negotiation and making sure the terms are adequate enough to do the fight, but as far as Canelo wanting the fight to happen and as far as us wanting the fight to happen, yes, we want the fight. It’s the fight the fans want and we want to give it to the fans. We will sit down and negotiate the terms and make sure they’re fair and everybody is happy, but first, we had to agree to do the interim fights. That was a big step.

“We have a very, very good relationship with Tom, but right now, we’re focused on May. Canelo is excited about fighting on Cinco de Mayo. We’ll concentrate on that and focus on who he will fight next, and then we’ll turn our attention to Golovkin and sit down with K2 and see what we come up with.”

“Canelo just made 155 with no problem,” Gomez said. “[The weight] is hard to discuss right now. We both agreed to do voluntary fights. After, we will sit down like gentlemen and negotiate everything.”

“Whatever the WBC sets forth we will follow,” Gomez said. “We always have. But the way we’re working with Tom and the relationship we have, it would be hard to see a scenario where this goes to a purse bid.”

“We will negotiate everything in good faith,” said K2’s Tom Loeffler. “It was agreed between both parties to build up the fight and maximize the exposure and revenue. Everyone believes this would be the biggest fight in boxing. The agreement we reached with Golden Boy and the WBC means that by the end of May, Gennady will be part of the biggest fight in boxing or he will add the WBC title to his other two titles.

“Canelo is a proud fighter. If he didn’t care about the title, he wouldn’t have bothered with this agreement [for the voluntary fights]. The purpose of agreeing to it is to make their fight even bigger.”

GGG possibility at stake for Gilberto Ramirez

By Norm Frauenheim-
Gilberto Ramirez
LAS VEGAS — Unbeaten Mexican super-middleweight Gilberto Ramirez came to The Strip, hoping to land a shot at the Wold Boxing Organization’s 168-pound title.

Turns out, more than just a mandatory will be at skate Friday night when Ramirez (32-0, 24 KOs) faces Gevorg Khatchikan of the Netherlands (23-1,11 KOs) at The Cosmopolitan in a TruTV-televised bout (10 p.m. ET/PT).

Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin plans to be at ringside in what might prove to be more than just a night out as a fan.

Ramirez promoter Bob Arum said he has talked to Tom Loeffler, the executive director of K2, Golovkin’s promoter.

Arum said they have discussed a Ramirez-GGG bout next year.

“But it will only happen if Gilberto can win tomorrow night, thus preserving his mandatory challenge for the world title, and then beating WBO world champion Arthur Abraham,” Arum said Thursday in a Top Rank news release. “That’s a lot of pressure to put on most fighters’ shoulders, but Gilberto seems to thrive on it. He has said all along that he only wants to fight the best, even if it means fighting Abraham and Golovkin back-to-back.”

Golovkin To Be Ringside Watching Ramirez truTV Fight at Cosmopolitan

Gennady Golovkin
LAS VEGAS, NV (November 19, 2015) — Forget “Zurdo.” “Pressure” just became the new middle name for the “Mazatlan Mauler,” GILBERTO “Zurdo” RAMIREZ! Ramirez (32-0, 24 KOs), the No. 1 world-rated super middleweight contender from Mazatlan, Mexico with the matinee idol looks, will be risking his mandatory challenger position for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) world title when he defends his WBO International and NABF super middleweight titles against once-beaten GEVORG KHATCHIKIAN (23-1, 11 KOs), of the Netherlands, Friday night at The Chelsea inside The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. As if that isn’t enough pressure, World Middleweight Champion and top-rated pound for pound fighter GENNADY GOLOVKIN will be sitting ringside on an advance scouting mission of Ramirez.

“Tom Loeffler and I have had several serious conversations about pitting these two undefeated warriors against each other next year,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum. “But it will only happen if Gilberto can win tomorrow night, thus preserving his mandatory challenge for the world title, and then beating WBO world champion Arthur Abraham. That’s a lot of pressure to put on most fighters’ shoulders but Gilberto seems to thrive on it. He has said all along that he only wants to fight the best, even if it means fighting Abraham and Golovkin back-to-back. That’s the same mindset great Mexican champions before him — the real Chavez, Morales, Barrera and Marquez — had and why they were, and are so popular.”

The Ramirez vs. Khatchikian 10-round super middleweight rumble will headline the Friday, November 20 edition of MetroPCS Friday Night Knockout on truTV, which will be televised live on truTV, beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT. The telecast will open with unbeaten contender SAÚL “Kid Dynamite” RODRÍGUEZ (18-0-1, 13 KOs), of Riverside, Calif., in a 10-round lightweight battle against IVAN “Bam Bam” NAJERA (16-1, 8 KOs), of San Antonio, TX. The live boxing series is presented by truTV and Top Rank® and produced in association with HBO Sports®. Find truTV at: http://trutvishere.com/.

The victory raised Golovkin’s record to 34-0 with 31 knockouts including 21 consecutive stoppages in the 15th defense of his WBA world title and improved his knockout ratio to 91.2%, the highest in middleweight division history. This is the sixth time Golovkin has won the monthly award from the WBA.

Currently the WBA/IBF/IBO and “WBC” Interim Middleweight Champion, Golovin is next setting his sights on the winner of the Miguel Cotto/Canelo Alvarez Middleweight Title bout on Saturday, November 21

“Gennady wants to unify all four major sanctioning body titles.” said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of K2 Promotions. “He will be sitting ringside on November 21 in Las Vegas and looks forward to facing the winner as soon as possible.”

This past Sunday night Golovkin was a special guest of the Dallas Cowboys at AT & T Stadium and held media events in Dallas and San Antonio in his first trip to Texas.

On December 13, Golovkin will head to Panama City, Panama to attend the WBA’s 94th annual convention.

“Gennady is the most active world champion in boxing and he provides excitement every time he enters the ring,” added Loeffler.

In the last three years Golovkin has fought 11 times with all of his victories coming by knockout while providing some of the highest TV ratings worldwide for his fights.

“GGG” ADDRESSES WBC CONVENTION!

Kunming, China (November 3, 2015) On Monday at the World Boxing Council’s 53rd Annual Convention in Kunming, China, boxing superstar, WBA/IBF/IBO and WBC “Interim” Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, was honored by the sanctioning body in addressing the attendees on behalf of all current and former champions in attendance.

“It was great to be asked by Mauricio Sulaiman to speak for the champions”, said Golovkin. “With Evander Holyfield, Larry Holmes and my hero Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. present it was an honor for me.”

In addition to speaking at and attending the convention, Golovkin spent a wealth of time greeting the large groups of attendees and fans who waited for photos and autographs.

“Coming to China and attending the WBC convention was a great experience for Gennady,” said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. “The outpouring of support from the fans has been tremendous and clearly outlines that he is one of the most marketable international fighters in boxing.”

On October 17, Golovkin added the IBF Middleweight Title to his collection in a title unification bout against David Lemieux. The eighth round stoppage took place in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,548 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. His record of 34-0 with 31 knockouts includes a 91% knockout ratio, the highest in middleweight division history.

GOLOVKIN KNOCKOUT OF LEMIEUX VIEWED BY MILLIONS WORLDWIDE!!

Gennady Golovkin
LOS ANGELES, CA (October 23, 2015) Performing spectacularly this past Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 20,548 at “The Mecca of Boxing”, Madison Square Garden, Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s eighth round stoppage of David Lemieux was watched by millions worldwide.

“Gennady’s performance in the ring and the response from fans across the globe continues to define him as one of the best and most marketable fighters in boxing,” said Tom Loeffler, Managing Director of of K2 Promotions. “He clearly rose to the occasion on the sports’ biggest stage in his finest performance against another champion.”

Among the countries reporting top ratings for the Middleweight World Championship Title Unification are Mexico, Germany, Poland, Kazakhstan, Korea, Japan, and the United Kingdom. The international sporting event was telecast in over 120 countries from “The World’s Most Famous Arena.”

The fight was produced and distributed live in the United States by HBO Pay-Per-View, generating over 150,000 buys. It will be replayed by HBO this Saturday, October 24 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT, paired with the thrilling co-feature from Madison Square Garden, WBC Flyweight World Champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez’s stoppage of former four-time world champion, Brian “The Hawaiian Punch” Viloria.

Improving his perfect record to 34-0 with 31 knockouts, Golovkin added the IBF Middleweight World Title to his existing WBA/IBO and WBC ‘Interim” Middleweight World Titles. His 91% knockout ratio is the highest in middleweight championship history.

Additionally, the victory over Lemieux, (34-3, 32KO’s), represented Golovkin’s 21st consecutive knockout and 15th consecutive world title defense moving him within five defenses of boxing legend Bernard Hopkins’ record of 20 in the middleweight division and past Hall of Famer Carlos Monzon’s middleweight streak of fourteen consecutive title defenses in the division.

Golovkin – Lemieux generates 150,000 PPV Buys

Gennady Golovkin
According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, Last Saturday night’s Pay Per view between Gennady Golovkin and David Lemieux generated 150,000 buys.

“It will do just over 150,000 buys, which was the number we originally based things on when we talked to [Lemieux promoter] Golden Boy about making the fight to determine how much Lemieux would need and what Gennady would need,” said K2”s Tom Loeffler said.

“I thought it would have a good chance to break 200,000, but with all the college football games and no way to predict the Mets would be playing the Cubs — a high-end playoff series — it was tough,” he said. “A lot of people were watching baseball in those big markets, but overall, we were happy with the event. When you can sell every single ticket to Madison Square Garden and generate a gate of over $2 million, you’re happy.”

HBO Sports senior vice president Mark Taffet, who runs HBO PPV, said the event was a strong first-time pay-per-view effort for Golovkin, regarded by many as a future face of boxing in the wake of Floyd Mayweather’s retirement last month.

“Golovkin-Lemieux met or exceeded every benchmark of success which was set going into the event,” Taffet told ESPN.com. “The PPV buys solidly met expectations even amidst the Mets-Cubs national telecast registering the highest-ever TBS baseball playoff viewership, including the PPV-critical markets of New York and Chicago. This, combined with the palpable excitement of the sold-out crowd in Madison Square Garden and the in-ring performances by Gennady Golovkin and [co-feature winner Roman] ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez, encourage us that the next great era of boxing has begun and will continue with the highly-anticipated [Miguel] Cotto-Canelo [Alvarez)] megafight on Nov. 21.”

“But we’ve always taken risks to get Gennady where he’s at,” Loeffler. “And so we thought it was the right step at this point. It was worth it. We generated a lot of money with the pay-per-view, delay rights from HBO, the closed circuit and the international revenue.

“A lot of people focus on the American market, but he had one of the highest rated international shows in the U.K. on BoxNation, on SAT.1 in Germany and the biggest channel in Russia. He was also on Polsat, the biggest channel in Poland, for the first time. And on top of that, the Garden told us we broke the merchandise record for any boxing event there: over $122,000.”

“He is the type of fighter who can fight on HBO and still have a significant budget or have a big fight on pay-per-view,” Loeffler said. “I thought we gave the fans a lot of value with considering the ticket prices and the price of the pay-per-view. It was their first time on pay-per-view, and even though we thought it might break 200,000, we certainly don’t look at it as a negative. The fight still generated more than the license fee would have been from HBO, and the international sales were very strong, as were our sponsorships.”

LEE DENIES GOLOVKIN DEAL AND INSISTS HE’S FOCUSSED ON FIGHT WITH SAUNDERS

Lee_Korobov_141213_001a
WBO World Middleweight Champion Andy Lee has denied that he is overlooking his forthcoming mega-fight with rival Billy Joe Saunders and is eyeing up a showdown against Gennady Golovkin.

Lee met face-to-face with Saunders at today’s press conference as the clock counts down to their Saturday 19th December barnstormer at the Manchester Arena, but rumours have been circulating that Lee’s team have been negotiating a fight with top pound-for-pounder GGG.

The Irishman shot down the rumours and says he would be a fool to overlook his undefeated mandatory WBO challenger who he recognises as his most dangerous opponent to date.

“It would be stupid of me or Adam Booth to look past Saunders as he’s the next man I’m facing in the ring and he’s a dangerous fighter who could take my title. There’s no way at all I’d be overlooking him. Golovkin is the golden carrot for everyone in the middleweight division but I have to deal with Saunders first,” Said Lee.

Hatfield star Saunders is fully focussed on Lee and the biggest moment of his career and there is no thought of Glolovkin on his mind.

He said, “I do hope that Lee is concentrating on this fight because I’m going all out to take his title. He’s a clever man and I know he wouldn’t be looking past me, so I was surprised to hear that today. Golovkin is the main man in the division at the moment, but when I win the title then he’s going to be calling me out for the WBO belt if he wants to unify them,”

He ridiculed recent comments from Chris Eubank Jnr’s father, Johnny English, who said his son would destroy Golovkin and reminds them that he outclassed Jnr. and handed him his first defeat.

Saunders added, “I’m not going to shoot my mouth off like ol’ Johnny English and Jnr. who are living on another planet if they think they can destroy Golovkin, self confidence is good but that is just plain stupidity. The old man reckoned his son would beat me, but I handed Jnr. back to him beaten and broken and now he’s got to fight the man that I also beat, Spike O’Sullivan, to try and rebuild his career,”

“This is a real fight for the world title between me and Lee, this is the real thing. I guarantee there’s going to be someone going down at some point in the fight, but one’s things for sure I’m coming away with the belt.”

Blackwell urges Eubank Jr to stop name-dropping GGG and step up in class

LONDON (20 OCTOBER) Reigning British middleweight champion Nick Blackwell has poured scorn on domestic rival Chris Eubank Jr’s WBA interim title fight this Saturday (October 24) and encouraged him to stop making idle boasts and start making meaningful fights.

Eubank Jr this week claimed he has sights set on a showdown with WBA and IBF world middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, but, on Saturday night, meets Tony Jeter, an American with three stoppage defeats and not a single standout win on his record.

Blackwell is left confused.

“I’ve never heard of Eubank Jr’s next opponent,” he concedes. “I just assumed it was an eight-round warm-up fight until someone told me they were actually putting it on as a title defence. That just blew my mind. It’s a joke. At least if you’re going to pretend to be some kind of ‘world champion’, fight someone we all know.

“As for the Golovkin talk, it’s hilarious. I’d be surprised if he fights Spike O’Sullivan in December, let alone Golovkin. I think they’re worried about O’Sullivan, so you can imagine what they truly think of a fight with Golovkin.

“Golovkin would toy with Eubank Jr and make him look stupid. I think he’d smash him to pieces within four rounds. But, if Golovkin wanted to, he could knock him out in one.

“The Eubanks know what they’re doing, though. They know that if they make stupid statements about Golovkin, people will at least have an opinion and be talking about them. They have no intention of ever stepping into a ring with Golovkin, but that won’t stop them pretending in order to generate some column inches.”

Of course, what Blackwell really wants is the chance to pick up where Billy Joe Saunders left off and add another defeat to Eubank Jr’s record. It’s a fight he has wanted for some time now. It’s one he feels should happen.

“Unfortunately, the only way that fight will ever happen is if Spike pulls out of their proposed December 12 date and they offer me the fight on two or three weeks’ notice,” he says.

“Eubank Jr would never have the guts to fight me with a full eight or ten-week training camp behind me. He knows exactly what would happen if I was given that amount of time to prepare. He’s been in the ring with me before and he knows he wasn’t able to handle me.”

Golovkin takes out Lemieux in 8

Gennady Golovkin continued to make his case as boxing’s number one fighter and attraction as he scored an 8th round one-sided beatdown of David Lemieux to retain his WBA and WBC Interim and win the IBF Middleweight title at a sold-out Madison Square Garden

Golovkin dominated the action and did as he wanted as he set the tone with a piston like jab in round one.  In round five, he sent Lemiux to the canvas from a short right hand.  Golovkin continues the assault with thunderous punches that started to bloody the face of the Canadian.  Finally in round 8, Golovkin landed a big flurry of punches that forced referee Steve Willis to mercifully stop the bout at 1:32 of round eight.

Said Golovkin, “I feel great, it was a great fight”

“I felt his power, but I was strong tonight
and my punches hurt him.”

“He is a great champion and I’m glad to beat him.”

“I want all the belts, now I have two. The winner of Cotto/Canelo
for sure.”

“I’m not sure who will win that fight, but I want to fight the winner next.”

“I’m staying at 160 until I have all the belts.”

Said Lemieux, “I feel like the referee called the fight too early. I am fine. When he stopped it I wasn’t event on the mat, I can keep going.

“I have a lot of respect for Golovkin as a fighter. We prepared well for this fight but I feel like I waited too long to take some shots tonight and that really hurt me.”

“I want another chance at Golovkin and I will take advantage of it.

said referee Steve Willis, “I had to do something”

“David is very competitive fighter and as long as he was able to throw punches he was going to keep on trying but his chances of winning were decreasing as the fight went on”

“Against a guy(golovkin) like that he was going to get really hurt and I’m here to protect the fighters health and that’s my top priority ”

“I couldn’t let him continue to receive punishment ”

“I gave him every chance I could and i still hesitated too much. It was over.”

Said Lemieux manager Camile Estephan, Camille:
“It was too early to stop the fight. That punch that Golovkin threw didnt even bring David to the mat. David fought valiantly, he showed a lot of heart and skills. But Golovkin’s defense was great, I think that his defense is underestimated.

Said Bernard Hopkins, “Today was a great night of boxing. David did a great job and put on a great performance. But today Golovkin was better and proved that he deserves to be the unified middleweight champion.

Roman Gonzalez remained perfect with a 9th round stoppage to retain the WBC Flyweight title over Brian Viloria.

In round three, Gonzalez sent Viloria to the deck with a perfect counter right.

Gonzalez dominated the fight as Viloria did well to the body bit Gonzalez’s furious punching battered the face of Gonzalez.  In round nine, Gonzalez landed a right to the head that backed Viloria up to the ropes and then landed a hard flurry of punches until the bout was stopped at 2:53 of round nine.

Gonzalez, 111.4 lbs of Managua, NIC is 44-0 with 38 knockouts.  Viloria, 111.4 lbs of Waipahu, Hi is now 36-5.

Said Viloria, “Roman is a tremendous fighter. I have nothing but respect for him. I had prepared for a different Roman and he surprised me with his defense and his speed. I do feel like the fight was stopped prematurely, I feel good and can keep going. If I had an opportunity to take him on again I would. I feel like I learned a lot today and would use that for the next time around.”

Heavyweight Luis Ortiz annihilated Matias Ariel Vidondo in round three of their scheduled 12-round WBA Interim Heavyweight title bout.

Ortiz dropped Vidondo in round two from a left and ended things in round three when he landed a crushing left that made Vidondo land face first at 17 seconds of round three.

Ortiz, 237.8 lbs of Miami, FL is 23-0 with 20 knockouts.  Vidondo, 261 lbs of Rosario, ARG is now 20-2-1.

Said Ortiz, “I deserve this win and deserve to fight the best. Vidondo did hit hard but he wasn’t good enough to face me. Everyone can see that I dominated the fight. I want to fight the best and I want Golden Boy Promotions to keep its promise and get me the best. I am ready for Klitschko, I know he is running from me. I am going to come after him. I am just ready to become the heavyweight champion of the world.

Taureano Johnson won a 12-round unanimous decision over Eamonn O’Kane on a Middleweight elimination bout.

It looked like it was going to be an early night as Johnson dropped O’Kane twice in round one.  First from a double right hook and again from a sweeping right hook.

Johnson was able to grind out the tough rounds in close and win by scores of 119-107, 118-108 and 117-109.

Johnson, 159.4 lbs of Nassau, BAH is 19-1.  O’Kane, 160 lbs og Belfast. IRE is 17-2-1.

Said Johnson, “This is my first time going 12-round and man does it feel good. It was a tough fight, no matter how many times O’kane went down he kept coming at me. I have respect for him as a fighter. Winning this title eliminator really makes everything for me come full circle and legitimizes me as a true threat in the middleweight division. You know this was a great fight that everyone enjoyed a true brawl, very Mexican Style. This is the beginning for me, the sky is the limit.”

Ruslan Madiyev won a 4-round unanimous decision over Sean Gee in a Welterweight bout.

Madiyev scored a knockdown in round two from a right hand.

Madiyev, 139.6 lbs of Karagabda, KAZ won by scores of 40-35 twice and 39-36 and is now 6-1. Gee, 142.6 lbs of Chicago, IL is now 2-3.

Said Madiyev, “I’m very happy with my performance, it was an honor to
fight on such a big card here at Madison Square Garden.”

“He was a little awkward but I was able to figure him and
win the fight.”‘

“Thanks very much to Gennady for having me on his card. I look
forward to fighting again as soon as possible.”

Lamont Roach Jr. won a 6-round unanimous decision over Jose Bustos in a Lightweight bout.

Scores were 59-55 on all cards for Roach, 131.4 lbs of Washington, DC who is now 9-0. Bustos, 130.4 lbs of Ciudad, MX is now 7-6-3.

Said Roach, “Bustos came to fight. He was not backing down throughout the fight but I did not feel threatened by him. I feel like I dominated the fight and was giving him my all. I wanted to end the fight impressively via knock out but he has a strong jaw. This is my last six-rounder and will move up to eight rounds in my next fight, very excited to go there.”

Maurice Hooker won a split decision over Ghislain Maduma in a 10-round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Hooker dropped Maduma in round three with a left hook. Maduma came to back in round six to rock Hooker several times on the ropes before Hooker spit out his mouthpiece.

Hooker, 139.4 lbs of Dallas, TX won by scores of 95-94, 95-93 and Maduma took a card 95-93.

Hooker is now 19-0-2. Maduma, 139.2 lbs of Montreal is 17-2.

Said Hooker, “I think the fight went a good pace and Maduma was a good fighter. He came prepared to fight. I knew I had him from the first round when I hit him with my left. By the fourth round, I grew confident that I was in the lead once I dropped him. But I grew too confident I think and that is when he caught me by surprise in the sixth round. I wasn’t as focused as I should have been so I made sure to listen to my corner and keep him at a distance with my jab for the remaining rounds. I feel that I am ready for a bigger fight and feel confident I can make a statement at 140 pounds. I would love a shot at Broner or any Golden Boy Promotions fighter at 140 pounds, like Antonio Orozco, I can take him.”
