Haney Brutalizes Abduallaev, Retires Him In 4

NEW YORK CITY — Twenty year old lightweight phenom Devin “The Dream” Haney moved to 23-0, 15KO, retiring previously unbeaten Russian Zaur Abdullaev (11-1, 7KO) in four rounds to capture the WBC Interim LIghtweight Title in the main event of a Matchroom Boxing USA fight card from Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater, streamed live on DAZN.

The Las Vegas-native Haney wasted no time forcing the action and came off his stool, firing sharp, crisp punches that seemed to make Abdullaev uncomfortable.  Overwhelmed by Haney’s speed, Abdullaev hardly threw punches the first two rounds, and Haney banked them easily.

In the third, the 25 year-old Russian began to open up a bit, but at a price.  Each time Abdullaev tried to launch an offensive attack, Haney made sure to return fire.

Haney continued to control every second of the contest and towards the end of fourth, Haney began to land explosive rights at will.  One of those rights may have fractured Abdullaev’s cheekbone, and because of that, his corner threw in the towel between the fourth and fifth round.

It was the second straight win inside the distance for Haney, who is trained by his father, Bill.  In Haney’s previous fight he scored a spectacular KO of the Year candidate with his one-punch 7th round knockout of veteran Antonio Moran.

As the WBC interim title holder, Haney is now next in line to face WBC champion Vasiliy Lomachenko, although because of boxing politics, that’s not likely to happen anytime soon.

Amanda Serrano UDs Heather Hardy, Re-Captures WBO Featherweight Title

Seven weight world champion Amanda “The Real Deal” Serrano (37-1-1, 27KO) recaptured the WBO featherweight title she once held and won the Battle of Brooklyn, earning a hard-fought ten round unanimous decision against fellow Brooklynite Heather “The Heat” Hardy (22-1-1, 4KO).  Judges cards read 98-91×2 and 98-92 for Serrano.

The fight was almost over before it began, as the 30 year-old southpaw Serrano blitzed Hardy early, catching her clean with a left midway through the first round that buzzed the champ.  The ensuing :60 seconds were almost difficult to watch, as Serrano mercilessly let her fists fly, marking up and drawing blood from the defenseless Hardy’s face in the process. Credit the 37 year-old Hardy for hunkering down and grinding it out until the ding of the bell.

In the second and third, Hardy fared better, but Serrano, the more athletic and naturally gifted of the two continued to dominate and have it all her way.

Refusing to relinquish her title without a fight, the resilient Hardy mounted a comeback in the middle and late rounds, as she finally was able to settle in and mount some offense of her own.

But Hardy wasn’t able to sustain any offense for prolonged periods of time, and Serrano’s engine never slowed down.

For Serrano, the win now sets her up for a mega fight against unifight lightweight champion, Katie Taylor.

The result marks Hardy’s first defeat inside the squared circle.  Notably, she has ventured out into the world of MMA where she amassed a 2-2 record in four career fights.

Hunter Hands Kuzmin First Loss In Heavyweight Clash

Matchroom Boxing heavyweight Michael “The Bounty” Hunter (18-1, 12KO) scored a fifth round knockdown en route to a wide unanimous decision against Sergey Kuzmin (15-1, 11KO) to capture Kuzmin’s WBA Inter-Continental Heavyweight Title in a twelve round affair.  All three judges agreed on a 117-110 card for Hunter.

Hunter, 31, came out for the first round with high-energy and established a pace that he couldn’t maintain.  Kuzmin, 32, patient throughout the first — too patient to win the round — began to assert himself in the second round, methodically working his way within range before firing off a few shots and tying up.

The third was fought on even terms up until the closing seconds when Hunter, who is trained by former world heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman, landed a huge overhand right that stopped Kuzmin in his tracks.

Hunter committed to attack Kuzmin’s body in the fourth and early in the fifth, during an exchange, caught Kuzmin with a crisp left hook that sent the big Russian crashing to the canvas.  Kuzmin beat Ricky Gonzalez’s ten count and navigated his way through the remainder of the round.

Hunter remained in control of the contest through the sixth, seventh, and much of the eight rounds until Kuzmin stunned Hunter with a combination as the eight round drew to a close.

Kuzmin was never fully able to capitalize on the little momentum he was able to generate and going forward, Hunter had no trouble putting out any fires when the flames arose.

The win extends Hunter’s win streak to six.  His only loss remains his unanimous decision defeat against reigning Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Fighter of the Year, Oleksandr Usyk in April 2017, when both fighters were cruiserweights.

After the bout, Hunter called out former WBA world heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin.

Kuzmin’s most notable wins remain his retiring of British veteran David Price and his majority decision victory over Philadelphia little big man Joey Dawejko.

Ford Stays Perfect, Outpoints Castillo

2018 National Golden Gloves Champion Raymond “Savage” Ford pushed his record to 4-0, 1KO, earning a shutout decision (40-36×3) over the Bronx’s Rafael Castillo (1-4) in a four round junior featherweight bout.

The Camden, NJ-native Ford, showcased the skillset that earned him his Golden Gloves title, thoroughly outclassing Castillo over the duration of their twelve minute scrap.  At times the southpaw Ford, a Matchroom Boxing prospect, landed shots worthy of knockdowns, but Castillo — who has never been stopped — remained upright from bell to bell.

Bermudez Shines In Debut, Scores KO2 Over Conde

Lightweight Christian “Kike” Bermudez (1-0, 1KO) brought his hometown crowd to their feet in the second of a scheduled four round bout, scoring a one-punch KO of Jonathan Conde (1-3, 1KO).

Bermudez, 23, wasted no time letting his hands fly, twice stunning Conde in the first round. The end came suddenly two-thirds through the second when Bermudez uncorked a jab-straight right-left hook combo that exploded on Conde’s chin and crumpled him to the canvas.  The contest was immediately waved off at the 1:56 mark of the round two.

Yeleussinov Blasts Out Hicks Inside One

2016 Olympic Gold Medalist Daniyar “Kazakh Thunder” Yeleussinov (8-0, 4KO) displayed a lethal combination of speed and power to score a first round KO over previously unbeaten Texan Reshard Hicks (12-1-1, 6KO) in a welterweight bout initially slated for ten rounds.

Yeleussinov, a southpaw, stunned Hicks early with a left hand and then immediately blitzed him with a flurry of shots that sent Hicks to the mat.  Hicks beat referee Ron Lipton’s ten count, but never fully recovered. Yeleussinov, 28, patiently waited for another opening, and exploded another booming left that stunned Hicks, leaving him defenseless for the definitive blow — another left cross — that sent Hicks to the canvas for good.  Referee Ron Lipton called off the contest at the 2:38 mark of the opening round.

Akhmadaliev Stays Perfect, TKOs Soto In 4

Featherweight Murodjon “MJ” Akhmadaliev (7-0, 6KO) needed less than five of a scheduled eight rounds to improve upon his already perfect record, scoring a TKO4 against hard-nosed Colombian Wilner Soto (22-7, 2KO).

Akhmadaliev, a native of Uzbekistan who fights out of Joel Diaz’s gym in Indio, CA, took the fight to his Colombian counterpart, who to his credit, dug in and tried to throw blow for blow with the crafty, hard-hitting southpaw.

Despite a valiant effort from Soto, the 24 year-old Akhmadaliev battered him around the ring, and scored continuously with power punches to the head until referee Eric Dali stepped in to stop the bout at the 1:56 mark of the 4th round.

Ferrer Scores Wide UD Over Fryers

Brooklynite Wesley Ferrer (14-1-1, KO), a Dominican-native, won the battle of junior welterweight New York transplants, outpointing Yonkers’ Larry Fryers (11-2, 4KO), an Irish-native, in an eight round contest.  Judges scorecards read 80-72 and 79-72×2.

It was the southpaw Ferrer’s left hand that was the difference maker in the bout.  He fed Fryers a steady diet of lefts and the Irishman had no answer for it. When Fryers went on the offensive, Ferrer countered him with a left.  When Fryers took a breather, Ferrer peppered him with a left from distance.

It was an impressive performance from “El Bongocera”, who dominated from bell to bell, and  has now won two straight since suffering his only defeat to Steven Ortiz last September.

The result marks Fryer’s second career loss.  His other defeat came via TKO against Nikolai Buzolin in April of last year.

Maijdov Stops Fountain In 4 In Pro Debut

In his professional debut, former 3x World Amateur Champion and 2012 Olympic Bronze Medalist, Magomedrasul Majidov (1-0, 1KO) rose up off the mat and scored a TKO4 over veteran Ed “Tex Trismigistis” Fountain (12-7, 5KO) .

The first round went according to plan for Majidov  as the big man from Azerbaijan cautiously navigated his first three minutes as a paid prizefighter.

The script got flipped early in the second, however, as Fountain caught Majidov with a short, crisp, left hook that dropped the Azerbaijani.

Majidov, who’s trained by John David Jackson, was able to dust himself off and rally the very next round, opening up a nasty cut under Fountain’s right eye.  Majidov increased pressure and pace and Fountain faded fast.

Majidov, who recently signed a promotional contract with Matchroom Boxing, continued to batter the tiring and increasingly defenseless Fountain, and at the 2:41 mark of round 4, referee Ron Lipton called a halt to the contest, acting on advice from ringside physician Dr. Nitin Sethi who had climbed up on the ring apron.

Darren “DC3” Cunningham UDs Jonathon Ramos To Open Night

Twenty-two year old super bantamweight prospect Darren “DC3” Cunningham upped his perfect record to 10-0, 5KO, outpointing Mexican journeyman Jonathan “Zurdo” Ramos (18-25-5, 6KO) in a six round affair that kicked off a ten bout card from Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater, the latter portion set to stream live on DAZN.  Judges cards read 60-54×2 and 59-55 for Cunningham, a St. Louis native, now living and fighting out of Las Vegas, NV where he trains alongside tonight’s headliner, Devin Haney.

The night of fights will commence with a triple-header beginning live at 9pm ET, anchored by a 12 round contest between 20 year-old phenom Haney (22-0, 14KO) and undefeated Russian Zaur Abdullaev (11-0, 7KO) for the WBC interim lightweight title.

Kovalev Donates Auction Proceeds to Disabled Fighter

Sergey Kovalev
Ft. Lauderdale, FL: Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev may be the Russian Wrecking Ball in the ring, but outside the ring he has nothing but compassion for his fallen comrades. Krusher has posted fight-worn/autographed memorabilia from his most recent WBO Light Heavyweight Title defense against Blake Caparello for auction on eBay. Abdusalamov, 33, sustained extensive brain injuries following the bout against Perez. He had surgery to remove a blood clot from his brain and was in a coma for several weeks afterwards. Now, more than nine months after the fight, he is confined to a rehabilitation facility in New York State and doctors are uncertain whether he will speak or walk again.

Kovalev, 31, won the third defense of his WBO Light Heavyweight Title on August 2nd against Caparello at Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ. His eBay auction includes his fight-worn/autographed gloves, his signature fight-worn Krusher shoes and his fight-worn/autographed hand wraps from his fight with Caparello.

About the auction Sergey said, “I trained with Magomed. He is my friend and a good man. This is tragedy. I just want to help him and his family.”

Abdusalamov out of coma

Good news to report as Heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov is out of his coma that he has been in for all but a day since his November 2nd fight with Mike Perez.

“The doctor told me he is out of the coma and awake and that he is aware of his surroundings, and they are moving him to a regular room (on Tuesday),” said Nathan Lewkowicz. “They said this is different than last time (he was taken out of the coma) because this time he’s showing more improvement.

“He’s awake. He’s not able to speak but he’s awake and aware of his surroundings even if he can’t speak. His eyes are open.

“He said they won’t know how his brain is until 18 months after the injury, but it’s only been a month and his brain is still healing. The doctor said he most likely will have some limb dysfunction, but they don’t exactly what it will mean. He was on death’s doorstep when they brought him in after the fight, but the fact that he was young and healthy made all the difference. He’s making progress. He’s going to live but they don’t know what his limitations are going to be.”

Abdusalamov back on life support

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, injured Heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov is back on life support after being briefly being taken off it. Abdusalamov was injured during his November 2nd bout with Mike Perez in New York.

“His temperature shot up to 103, so his body wasn’t ready yet (to come out of the coma), so they put him back on life support and (into) the medically induced coma,” Lewkowicz said. “Terrible setback. No clue when they are trying to bring him out again.”

Abdusalamov expected to survive

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, injured Heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov is expected to survive after being placed in a coma following his loss to Mike Perez on November 2nd in New York.

“A week ago, the doctors thought he was not going to make it, that he would not survive. They said they were 100 percent sure he would not make it,” said Nathan Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing. “Now they think it has turned around. They say he is going to make it now. They have seen progress with his motor skills from the tests they have been doing.

“The words out of their mouth after the surgery were, ‘We don’t think he’s going to make it.’ They said that to the family. Now, based on how he’s progressed in these different tests, they changed their view. From what the doctor is saying the brain swelling has subsided.”

“They think they will try to wake him up in two or three days and see how he reacts,” Lewkowicz said. “We don’t know if his speech will be slurred or if he will be blind, which are major possibilities. The stroke could hinder some of his motor skills. He might not be able to speak well. He might be blind. The best we hope for is that he can lead a normal life.”

“They did a test by pinching his arm and he was smacking the doctor’s hand away, showing his motor skills are coming back. They weren’t expecting that,” Lewkowicz said. “It’s amazing progress. It’s good news. He’s still young, only 32, and was in good health before what happened. So that is very helpful.”

Abdusalamov suffered stroke while in coma

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, injured Heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov suffered a stroke while in a mediically induced coma.

“He is recovering from a stroke and he’s on a machine that’s keeping him alive,” Nathan Lewkowicz, vice president of his father Sampson Lewkowicz’s promotional company, Sampson Boxing, which promotes Abdusalamov, told ESPN.com on Tuesday. “He is getting better according to the doctors as he doesn’t have a temperature like he did on Sunday.”

“We didn’t want to say anything about it but someone told the New York Post about it, so I decided to confirm it,” Lewkowicz said.

“The worst part about [Monday’s] hospital visit though was seeing his 11-month-old daughter continually saying ‘Da Da.’ As a new father, that was absolutely heartbreaking,” Lewkowicz said.

“We are going to do what we need to do for Magomed,” Sampson Lewkowicz said. “He and his family are going to need our help. He is going to need financial assistance for the medical bills for his treatment and for his family, who are faced with an urgent financial crunch from this terrible accident.

“We cannot, as a boxing family, turn our backs on the brave men and women who compete in our sport when they need us most. We are going to do everything possible to help him get back on his feet. Magomed will never fight again, but he is a good man and a brave man with a nice family. We are going to make sure they all pull through this intact. That is the right thing to do. Every dollar will help.”

Team Abdusalamov Establishing Trust for Their Injured Fighter and Family

Sampson Lewkowicz, promoter of hospitalized Russian heavyweight Magomed “Mago” Abdusalamov, along with promoters Leon Margules and Lou DiBella, and with help and support of others in the industry, are establishing a fund and to donate and raise funds to help alleviate the financial burden the unfortunate brain injury Abdusalamov suffered Saturday night has placed on him and his family.

32-year-old Abdusalamov had to have emergency surgery to remove a blood clot, and part of his skull had to be removed to reduce swelling, following his brutal 10-round war against Mike Perez at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, on Saturday, November 2. The fight was also broadcast worldwide on HBO.

Mago is currently still in ICU at Roosevelt Hospital in New York.

Abdusalamov’s family, including his wife and father, brothers, and three young children, along with his manager Boris Grinberg are keeping constant vigil at the hospital. He has also been visited by his entire promotional team.

“We are going to do what we need to do for Magomed. He and his family are going to need our help,” said Lewkowicz. “He is going to need financial assistance for the medical bills for his treatment, and for his family who are faced with an urgent financial crunch from this terrible accident.”

Deeply saddened by the unfortunate twist of fate that has befallen his fighter, Lewkowicz says he is happy to have already received so many offers of help, including one from middleweight world champion, Sergio Martinez.

Abdusalamov in coma after Perez loss

Heavyweight Magomed Abdusalamov is in a medically induced coma after a small blood clot was found on his brain following his Saturday night defeat to Mike Perez in New York according to Dan Rafael of espn.com.

“He had surgery to have the blood clot taken out and a small piece of his skull removed to allow the [brain] swelling to go down,” Nathan Lewkowicz told ESPN.com. “After the fight he seemed fine, but they took him to the hospital to check him out and because he wasn’t feeling so good.”

“He was taken to the hospital to make sure he was OK and once he was there they found [the clot],” he said. “He thought he broke his left hand in the second round and also thought he had broken his nose at some point in the fight. But the bigger concern once he was at the hospital was the head injury they discovered.”

“Hopefully, ‘Mago’ will be out of the hospital in a couple of days,” Lewkowicz said. “He took a lot of shots to the head. His left hand is his power hand and once he broke it, he kept throwing with the right hand, but he wasn’t the same.”

Added HBO Sports president Ken Hershman in a statement: “The thoughts and prayers of all of us at HBO Sports are with Magomed Abdusalamov. We are grateful for the medical care he is receiving here in New York City and out of respect for Magomed and his family, we will wait for any official updates on his condition before making any further statements.”

Golovkin batters game Stevens; bout stopped after 8

Gennady Golovkin
NEW YORK–Gennady Golovkin retained his WBA Middleweight championship with an eight round beatdown over a tough Curtis Stevens in from of 4,618 fans at the Theater at Madison Square Garden

Stevens did well to match punches with Golovkin in the 1st but in round two he ate a monster left hook that sent him to the canvas. Stevens steadied himself in round three but still dropped the frame. Stevens started to take a beating in round four but came back late in the round to land four nasty shots that got him right back in the fight.

In round seven, Golovkin started to pound on Stevens along the ropes. The challenger kept Golovkin honest by landing an occasional power shot but the relentless Golovkin continued his assault. In round eight, Golovkin continued with a two fisted attack that was divided up between crunching body punches and sharp shooting to the head. Golovkin was undaunted and was gunning for the knockout of Stevens, who at this point was looking like a beaten man with blood coming from his nose. Finally and luckily for Stevens, he has a trainer who cares and it was his uncle Andre Rozier who saved his nephew from any more damage and called off the fight at the end of round eight.

Golovkin, 159 1/2 lbs of Kazakhstan is now 28-0 with 25 knockouts. Stevens, 159 1/4 lbs of Brooklyn is now 25-4.

Round six started off with Torres throwing and landing with Harrison against the ropes. Harrison did well in fighting off. Harrison got going again in round seven, as he drilled Torres with two solid right hands. Harrison continued working solid as he landed a nice right hand while fighting inside in the eighth. The HBO Sports team of Jim Lampley, Max Kellerman and Roy Jones Jr. will be ringside for the event, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

Other HBO playdates: Nov. 3 (9:15 a.m.) and 4 (11:15 p.m.)

HBO2 playdates: Nov. 3 (4:45 p.m.) and 5 (11:45 p.m.)

The main feature pits undefeated Kazakhstan sensation Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KOs) against rising star Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KOs) of Brooklyn in a scheduled 12-round middleweight title bout. With an 89% knockout rate – the highest percentage of any world champion today – and knockouts of his last 14 opponents, Golovkin, 31, has established himself as one of the most electrifying fighters in the sport. He scored a spectacular victory on HBO in June when he KO’d Matthew Macklin in the third round. This will be the fourth fight on American soil for the fan-friendly, 160-pound titleholder, who trains at Big Bear in California.

Like Mike Tyson and Riddick Bowe before him, Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KOs) is a product of the hardscrabble neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Although he’s been a pro for nine years, the 28-year-old’s career has surged the past two years and he’s scored impressive first-round KO victories in three of his last four fights.

The opening bout is a ten-round heavyweight slugfest, as Cuban native Mike Perez (19-0, 12 KOs) meets Russia’s Magomed Abdusalamov (18-0, 18 KOs). Perez, 27, and Abdusalamov, 32, both seek to preserve an undefeated record and display their abilities on a national stage.

“Face Off With Max Kellerman: Pacquiao/Rios,” featuring the two world-class prizefighters squaring off with Kellerman as moderator, debuts immediately following the boxing action (midnight-12:15 a.m.).

‘Mago’ Abdusalamov Preparing for his HBO Debut with New Trainer John David Jackson

Undefeated Russian heavyweight crusher Magomed “Mago” Abdusalamov (18-0, 18 KOs) is hard at work in Florida with new trainer John David Jackson, preparing for his first premium-cable appearance, a showdown with also undefeated Cuban Mike Perez (19-0, 12 KOs) on Saturday, November 2, at The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City and televised Live on HBO®.

The hard-hitting pair, both southpaws, will meet for Abdusalamov’s WBC USNBC Heavyweight Championship on the televised portion of the undercard of middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin’s World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization title defense against Curtis Stevens.

Sampson Lewkowicz, exclusive promoter of Abdusalamov, says the addition of trainer Jackson will give the 32-year-old Russian a new dimension to his game. “Who better to train a southpaw to become champion than one who has already done it?” he asked. “Magomed already had the best power in the heavyweight division and now with John David Jackson fine-tuning his defense, he will be unstoppable.”

A victory over 27-year-old Perez would be another significant notch on Abdusalamov’s belt. The big Cuban is a former Prizefighter UK champion who holds victories over respectable veterans such as Zack Page, Tye Fields and Travis Walker.

“Magomed is training to prove he is the real heavyweight on the horizon,” continued Lewkowicz. “Victories over other strong contenders like Perez are how he will do it. I’m very happy that HBO has chosen to spotlight Magomed. This exciting KO victory will allow him to establish himself as the most exciting puncher in the heavyweight division today.

Abdusalamov manager, Boris Grinberg, says his fighter will be the best version of himself he’s ever been on November 2.

“John David Jackson is the final piece of the puzzle to make the next heavyweight champion. The strongest offense in the division is now being taught defense by one of the slickest fighters in boxing history. We are very excited for the world to see the improved Magomed on HBO.”
