FORMER WORLD CHAMPION ANTHONY DIRRELL SQUARES OFF AGAINST MARCO ANTONIO RUBIO ON PREMIER BOXING CHAMPIONS ON CBS AT THE AMERICAN BACK CENTER IN CORPUS CHRISTI, TX

Dirrell Wins
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX (August 06, 2015) – Former world champion Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell (27-1-1, 22 KOs) takes on Mexican brawler Marco Antonio “El Veneno” Rubio (59-7-1, 51 KOs) in a XX-round super middleweight showdown on Sunday, September 6 from the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, Texas with televised coverage on CBS Sports beginning at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT/1 p.m. PT.

The co-main event of the evening will see bantamweight world champion Jamie McDonnell (26-2-1, 12 KOs) face the exciting Tomoki “El Mexicanito” Kameda (31-1, 19 KOs) in a 12 round world title rematch of their May 9 PBC on CBS fight that saw McDonnell survive a third round knockdown to win by the score of 114-113 on all three judges scorecards

“I’m ready to get back in the ring and prove that I’m still one of the most dangerous men in the game,” said Dirrell. “Rubio is a tough guy but I’m coming to knock him out and eventually get my title back. ‘The Dog’ is coming to Texas looking to inflict some pain.”

RUBIO QUOTE

“I am delighted to be going back to the states and facing Kameda again,” said McDonnell. “The first fight was brilliant, he’s a class act and I wish that the first fight had gone on even longer. People wrote me off before the first one but I was always confident that I would beat him and I am even more confident that I will do it again. If I start well this time I think I will stop him.” “This is the fight I wanted and I’m thankful to have the opportunity to rematch Jamie McDonnell,” said Kameda. “I thought that I won the first time, but this time I will leave no doubt. I can’t leave it up to the judges this time, my plan is to dominate.”

Tickets for the live event, which is promoted by Warriors Boxing and Leija Battah Promotions, are priced at $109, $93, $49, $38 and $15, not including applicable service charges and taxes and are on sale Thursday, August 6 at 10 a.m. CT. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com, the American Bank Center Box Office or by calling Leija Battah Promotions at (210) 979-3302. To charge by phone call Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000.

Doors open at American Bank Center at 12 p.m. CT and will feature a full day of exciting undercard action.

Dirrell has seen more adversity than most throughout his career as his time in boxing has been seriously jeopardized twice. First in December 2006 when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and was sidelined for 20 months and again in May 2012 when he broke his lower left leg and left wrist in a motorcycle accident. The Flint, Michigan-native never let that hold him down however as he kept winning fights and working his way up the professional ranks. In 2014 he won his first championship, when he defeated Sakio Bika. He will be looking to impress as he takes on the tough and rugged Rubio on September 6.

The 35-year-old Rubio is one of the most experienced fighters around and will look to add another big name to his list of victims throughout his 16-year career. Rubio owns victories over David Lemieux, Carlos Baldomir, Jorge Cota and Rigoberto Alvarez across a career that has seen him challenge for world titles on three occasions. Born in Durango, Mexico, he will be fighting close to home when he enters the ring in Corpus Christi.

Yorkshire, United Kingdom’s McDonnell has been on a tear since 2008 with 18 consecutive wins. He became a bantamweight world champion with a victory over Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat and later successfully defended against Javier Nicolas Chacon before coming over to America and defeating Kameda in May. In that fight McDonnell survived an early knockdown at the hands of Kameda and used his length and activity to earn the decision victory.

Kameda announced his arrival stateside after a vicious knockout over Pungluang Sor Singyu in July 2014 in Las Vegas. That knockout was Kameda’s second bantamweight title defense after he won the belt from Paulus Ambunda in 2013 after spending most of his career fighting in his native Japan and Mexico. The 24-year-old followed up his U.S. debut when he defeated Alejandro Hernandez in Chicago via split decision. He will look to prove his assertion that he should have been awarded the decision against Jamie McDonnell on September 6 when they rematch their May 9 fight.

Heavy Price: Overweight Rubio pays $100,000 for 1.8 pounds

By Norm Frauenheim
Gennady Golovkin
CARSON, Calif. – Marco Antonio Rubio lost money instead of weight in failing to make the 160-pound limit Friday for his attempt to upset favored Gennady Golovkin Saturday at sold-out StubHub Center.

Rubio forfeited $100,000 when he chose not to step on the scale for a second time two hours after he was 1.8 pounds heavier than the middleweight mandatory. It was no sweat for Golvkin, who came in one pound light at 159.

According to contracts filed with the California State Athletic Commission, the $100,000 price for being over-weight will be subtracted from Rubio’s $450,000 purse, which had ranked among the biggest in the Mexican’s long career. Golovkin (30-0, 27 KOs) will collect $900,000. If he loses, his title will be vacated, according to the re-done deal negotiated after the weigh-in.

Rubio trainer Robert Garcia was disappointed, yet not surprised. Despite several attempts at shedding the excess weight, Rubio (59-6-1, 27 KOs) couldn’t do it, said Garcia, who told reporters that his body “just shut down.’’

It’s hard to know what that might mean for Rubio’s chances against the heavy-handed, heavily favored Golovkin in an HBO-televised bout (10 p.m. ET/PT).

In the undercard’s featured bout, featherweights Nonito Donaire (33-2, 21 KOs) and challenger Nicolas Walters (24-0, 20 KOs) made weight, 125.6 pounds apiece.

NONITO DONAIRE

“Confident fighters are dangerous fighters. I know that. But there other fighters who said before a fight they were stronger than me, hit harder, were going to knock me out.

“Walters is a good champion but really how many quality fights has he been in compared to where I have been in my career?

“We both have speed, we both have power. It’s an explosive fight. This is going to end in a knockout. I will go into the ring and do my best.”

NICHOLAS WALTERS

“Donaire is a very good champion. We both have speed and power. The difference is intelligence. I was born to fight. The bigger the fight the better.

“If Donaire isn’t right, he’s going to get knocked out. Maybe five rounds, maybe less. Not sure yet.

“But you know what? Donaire stepped up and took this fight. He didn’t have to. For that, I respect him for getting in the ring with me.”

He returned to the top of the mountain as a world champion in his last fight, on May 31, at The Venetian Macao, dethroning defending WBA featherweight champion Simphiwe Vetyeka via a vicious five-round technical decision. His banner year in 2012 included four world championship victories. He beat former world champion Israel Vazquez, Jr. to capture the vacant WBO junior featherweight title, then unified the title by defeating IBF junior featherweight champion Jeffrey Mathebula. Donaire collected his third belt of the year by knocking out WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, ending Nishioka’s eight-year, 16-bout, winning streak. Donaire concluded his magnificent year by blasting out Mexican icon Jorge Arce in the third round and sealing his 2012 Fighter of the Year honors while extending his 12-year, 30-bout winning streak. He lost his title to undefeated Cuban sensation and WBA super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux in a title unification bout at a sold-out Radio City Music Hall on April 13, 2013. Career highlights for Donaire also include knockout victories of defending IBF flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan, former WBA bantamweight champion Wladimir Sidorenko, and defending WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel, ending Montiel’s 25-bout winning streak. That victory was named the 2011 Knockout of the Year. Donaire’s ended 2013 with a ninth-round knockout victory of Darchinyan in their eagerly-awaited rematch. Donaire has held a world title every year dating back to 2007. Three of his last four victories have been by way of knockout.

Walters (24-0, 20 KOs), of Montego Bay, Jamaica, enters this fight having won 10 of his last 11 fights by knockout. He captured the vacant WBA featherweight title on December 12, 2012, knocking out Daulis Presscott (26-1, 19 KOs) in the seventh round. He has successfully defended the title twice — both by knockout — stopping Alberto Garza and former two-division world champion Vic Darchinyan in the fourth and fifth rounds, respectively. A former amateur standout who collected gold medals at the 2007 Pan American Games Qualifier III and the 2005 and 2007 Caribbean Championships, Walters is known for his expert boxing skills and movement and two-fisted punching power that are at a caliber of a much higher weight class.

Donaire to fight Walters on GGG – Rubio card

Donaire_Vetyeka_140531_002a
According to Dan Rafael of espn.con, Nonito Donaire will fight undefeated Nicholas Walters on October as part of the Gennady Golovkin – Marco Antonio Rubio card in Carson, California.

“Even before this fight was made the response we’ve gotten to Gennady’s fight with Rubio has been incredible. There has been a great response. This just makes the show even bigger and better,” said K2 Promotions Tom Loeffler, who formally announced Golovkin-Rubio at a Los Angeles news conference on Wednesday, but couldn’t announce Donaire-Walters because the deal with Top Rank was not agreed to until several hours later.

“They are both Top Rank fighters, but we wanted to make the best fight possible even if it didn’t involve our fighters (in the co-feature),” Loeffler said. “This fight adds a lot of value to Gennady’s fight with Rubio.”

“These guys want to fight and we want them to fight, so this was a good spot for them,” said Top Rank’s Carl Moretti. “The fight is agreed to and the paperwork is going out. It’s a terrific fight. It’s Walters’ relative youth versus Donaire’s experience. Walters is a strong, younger, hungry fighter. Donaire is an established pound-for-pound fighter, one of the biggest names in the sport still. It’s not like Donaire hasn’t faced guys like this before. We know Donaire has been there before. Now we’ll see what Walters can do on this kind of big stage.”

Marcus Upshaw poised to upset Marco Antonio Rubio

MIAMI (March 19, 2013) – Underrated spoiler Marcus “Hurelius” Upshaw (15-8-2, 7 KOs) has returned to Mexico, seeking revenge on Saturday night (Mar. 23) for his last fight south of the border, against two-time world title challenger Marcos Antonio “El Veneno” Rubio (56-6-1, 49 KOs) for the vacant World Boxing Council Continental Americas middleweight title.

Upshaw is a true throw-back fighter, who will really fight anybody, anywhere, anytime. The 32-year-old Floridian has done just that throughout most of his seven-year professional career, earning a reputation as a dangerous opponent who has made a reputation for pulling-off major upsets.

“If I’m in the gym and in good shape,” Upshaw said, “I will fight anybody, anywhere, even on short notice. My problem was I’m a very late starter. I didn’t get going until the fourth, fifth or sixth rounds. It just took me a few rounds to get going. I like to adjust to my opponents’ style to decide what style I need to use. Since I’ve been with my head trainer, (two-time world champion) John David Jackson, I’ve decided to let it go early. He knows I’m a slow starter but, by the third round, I’m now firing.”

In 2001, Upshaw derailed 19-1 James McGirt’s ascent to the top with a controversial 10-round majority draw, in which many felt Upshaw should have had his hand raised. Two fights later, Upshaw upset 10-0 prospect Ashandi Gibbs (10-0) by way of a fourth-round technical knockout for the Florida State middleweight championship. Upshaw traveled to Quebec City in 2010 and won his signature fight to date, a stunning 10-round decision over 21-1-1 local hero Renan St. Juste, which catapulted Upshaw into the world ratings (IBF #6, WBO #9, WBC #11).

In his next fight, though, Upshaw was stopped in the fourth round by future world title challenger Osumanu Adama (18-2) for the USBA and IBO Inter-continental middleweight titles. The dream-breaker returned this past January in his last fight, as Upshaw registered am eighth-round technical knockout of local favorite Vladine Biosse (14-1-1).

“I know what they expect,” Upshaw spoke about fighting favored opponents in their backyards. “It’s not a surprise to me. I don’t get upset. They talk tough, right up until the time we step in the ring, but once I touch them, they know. I have had a few fights taken away from me.”

Upshaw acknowledges undefeated super middleweight contender Edwin Rodriguez and Gilberto Ramirez Sanchez as the best he’s ever fought. Last November, Upshaw lost a 10-round decision in Mexico to Sanchez (23-0) for the WBC Youth World middleweight championship.

“After the fifth round,” Upshaw noted, “I thought I had him. He’s a helluva fighter, like a southpaw Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. We went 10 hard rounds. I hurt him and should have beaten him. I haven’t been the same since that fight. Now, I’m out to destroy. I’m a changed fighter. This time I’m going there (Mexico) to get revenge. After my first experience fighting in Mexico, I’m going for a knockout this time. If we go 10 rounds everybody will know that we duked it out.”

Rubio lost world title fights to Chavez (DEC12) and Kelly Pavlik (RTD9). The rugged Mexican has defeated Carlos Manuel Baldomir, David Lemieux, Jose Luis Zertuche twice, Enrique Ornelas, Frankie Randall, Fitz Vanderpool and Saul Roman during the course of his 13-year prizefighting career.

“As you can see by his last fight, you can’t go by Marcus’ record,” explained his manager for the past four years, Si Stern. “Earlier in his career, his management team didn’t have a plan in terms of what weight class to fight him. He was fighting light heavyweights and super middleweights, thrown to the wolves as a fill-in fighter. It took us some time to get him on the right track but, today, Marcus is a very good middleweight. There is no doubt in my mind that he is going to win this fight.”

The son of a career military man, retired U.S. Navy E6 Harry Upshaw, Jr., Marcus has rich athletic DNA in his system. His uncle, the late Gene Upshaw, was an NFL Hall of Fame offensive guard for the Oakland Raiders; younger sister, Antonette, played professional basketball in the WNBA and Europe; brother Harry III played basketball in Italy, and his 15-year-old cousin, Braden, is a blue-chip Maine running back/defensive end who’ll reportedly be playing college football in a few years for the University of Miami.

Tough shoes to fill, for sure, but an upset of Rubio could very well position him for the biggest fight of his life.

Chavez Jr. retains Middleweight crown with decision over Rubio

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. retained the WBC Middleweight title with a hard fought twelve round unanimous decision mandatory challenger Marco Antonio Rubio in front of an enthusiastic crowd as the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Texas.

Chavez swept through early rounds by landing the crisper shots inside. It was a solid performance for Chavez as he was dealing with struggling to make the 160 pound weight limit and the recent reports of an alleged DUI charge in Mexico.

The fight heated up in the last three rounds with the two guys standing to toe with Chavez landing some solid head shots which was a deter from his noted body assault.

Although Rubio threw over 400 more punches he landed about twenty less and the less powerful shots then the son of the legend.

Chavez, 159 1/2 lbs of Cuilcan, MX won by scores of 118-110; 116-112 and 115-113 and is now 45-0-1. Rubio, 159 lbs of Terron, MX is 53-6-1.

Nonito Donaire claimed the WBO Super Bantamweight championship with a twelve round split decision over former champ Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

Donaire controlled the fight with power shots as he worked the body and head. In round three he had Vazquez against the ropes as he landed a hard left hook and followed up with a flurry on the ropes. That caused a mouse under the left eye of Vazquez which was visible as early as round four. Vazquez had good round’s five and six as he started popping the jab that he followed with some straight rights.

Donaire started landing some hard shots in eight and nine that culminated with a huge uppercut that was followed by a left hook that sent Vazquez to the canvas for the first time in his career. Donaire coasted down the stretch as he switched between orthodox and southpaw picking Vazquez apart from distance.

Donaire, 121 1/2 lbs of General Santos City, Philippines won by scores of 117-110 on two cards while a third judge somehow saw the fight 115-112 in favor of Vazquez.

Donaire is now 28-1-1. Vazquez, 122 lbs of Bayamon, Puerto Rico 21-2-1.

Rubio Stops Vanda in Front of a Star Studded Ballroom

While the top story from Friday’s boxing card at Mandalay Bay was the star studded audience, Marco Antonio Rubio put on an impressive display in front of some of his most famous peers.

Rubio fired away at the game Matt Vanda, who couldn’t avoid the 1-2 combinations that Rubio was able to stick right through his defense. The always durable Vanda had his moments, putting together combinations in certain places, but was never able to really get a rhythm established that could keep up with Rubio’s high volume game plan.

In the 5th round Rubio stepped on the gas pinning Vanda against the ropes and not letting up. While Vanda was able to duck away from the initial fire, a second flurry prompted a stoppage from Kenny Bayless, and a 5th round TKO for Rubio in the midst of a gathering of stars.

In the room to take the action in from the start was Hector “Macho” Camacho, joking with fans and personnel from the beginning. Camacho’s arrival was followed by the likes of Tommy Hearns, and Marvin Hagler, both taking their fair share of photos with eager fans. Former Hearns conqueror Iran Barkley sat ringside talking boxing with the rest of the crowd. The most attention grabbing arrival was from Mike Tyson, who stopped for a few pictures en route to his ringside seat. As well as the several former world champions, not all of which were named, an impressive crop of current fighters showed up for the event. Sergio Martinez, Andre Dirrell, Wayne McCullough, Hasim Rahman Jr., Ishe Smith, and several others were also on hand.

In preliminary action Javier Fortuna had no trouble landing flush on Miguel Roman, but was never able to put together enough power shots for the stoppage. Fortuna moved well, and landed solid combinations throughout ten rounds and picked up a decision victory.

Son of Julian Jackson, John Jackson looked impressive, stopping Keandre Leatherwood in round six. Jackson took his fair share of punishment, but put a durable chin on display, and finished Leatherwood off in the sixth.

Super middleweight Badou Jack opened the card up in emphatic fashion, dropping Adam Collins in the first round. Jack put his power on display, collecting three quick knockdowns and a stoppage moving him to 9-0 with 8 ko’s.

In other action Samuel Rogers stopped Jamar Freeman in the tenth, Azael Cosio stopped Ronnie Warrior Jr. in the sixth, and Laura Serrano fought to a majority draw with Ela Nunez.

All in all the show provided some boxing entertainment, to the most hardcore of boxing audiences. Something of a family reunion feeling was in the air throughout the ballroom, and the boxing community for at least one night, felt like a fraternity.

Not Ready for Prime Time: Rubio stops Lemieux in Seven!!!

Labeled the next coming and undefeated, David Lemieux found out it wouldn’t be a cakewalk to a world championship as veteran Marco Antonio Rubio scored a shocking come from behind seventh round stoppage in front of a stunned crowd at the Bell Centre in Montreal in a Middleweight title elimination bout.

Lemieux dominated the first five plus rounds with the first round being a typical Lemieux type of fight as he landed thudding punches that had Rubio against the ropes. Lemieux continued to land hard shots against Rubio who seemed to be waiting to take Lemieux into the late rounds.

In round six, Rubio got into the fight and landed a nice right hand that buckled the hometown favorite. Rubio finished up the round the round strong as he continued to pressure Lemieux.

Rubio wasn’t capitalizing early in round seven and allowed to get his legs back until Rubio landed a huge right that knocked Lemieux slumped into the corner which was was ruled a knockdown. Rubio kept up the presure and landed a barrage of punches which coerced Lemieux’s cornerman Russ Anber to wave the white towel at 2:36 of round seven.

Rubio, 160 lbs of Mexico will now face the winner of the June 4th fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Sebastian Zbik and now has a record of of 50-5-1 with forty-four knockouts. Lemieux, 160 lbs of Montreal is now 25-1.

After nearly a year off, Adonis Stevenson took out Derek Edwards in round three of a scheduled ten round Super Middleweight bout.

Stevenson dropped Edwards twice in round two with left hands. The second coming from a vicious left for which Stevenson got full extension that bloodied and possibly broke the nose of Edwards.

In round three, Stevenson landed another vicious left that sent Edwards down and out at 1:48 of round three.

Stevenson, 166 lbs of Montreal is now 14-1 with eleven knockouts. Edwards, 167 lbs of Winston-Salem, NC is now 25-2.

Elider Alvarez wiped out Ernesto Zamora in round three in a scheduled four round Cruiserweight bout.

Alvarez dropped Zamora three times in the third round with booming rights and the final came on a hard combination at

Alvarez, 195 lbs of Montreal via Colombia is now 4-0 with three knockouts. Zamora is now 10-19-1
