LOS ANGELES (July 25, 2016) – Following their epic 2016 “Fight of the Year” candidate fight this past April 15, at the Belasco Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, Yoshihiro “El Maestrito” Kamegai, (26-3-2, 23 KO’s) and Jesus “Renuente” Soto-Karass, (28-10-4, 18 KO’s), will meet in the ring once again on Saturday, September 10 for a highly anticipated re-match from the Fabulous Forum in Los Angeles. The bout will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The rematch between Yoshihiro Kamegai and Jesus Soto- Karass is a super welterweight clash scheduled to go 10 rounds, presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Teiken Promotions, and will serve as the co-main televised event on HBO World Championship Boxing telecast prior to the world championship fight between undefeated fighters WBC Flyweight World Champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (45-0-0, 38 KO’s) and WBC Super Flyweight World Champion Carlos “Principe” Cuadras (35-0-1, 27 KO’s).

Tickets for this outstanding evening of professional boxing priced at $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25 are on sale through Ticketmaster (Ticketmaster.com, 1-800-745-3000) and the Forum Box Office.

“I am very grateful to K2 Promotions, Golden Boy Promotions and Teiken Promotions in making this rematch and honored to be on the Roman Gonzalez- Carlos Cuadras undercard at the Fabulous Forum,” said Yoshihiro Kamegai. “Jesus Soto-Karass and I had a great fight in April. I have a lot of respect for Soto-Karass. He is a warrior. I hope to put on another exciting fight with him in front of the great Southern California Boxing Fans.”

“I am excited to come back to the ring against such a great warrior like Yoshihiro Kamegai,” said Jesus Soto-Karass. “We put on a great show in April and I am sure we will deliver another great show in September. We are both great warriors who come forward and are willing to leave it all in the ring. This re-match will serve for one of us to finally emerge victorious, as we give the fans of Los Angeles a fight of a lifetime.”

“If fans thought the first Kamegai and Soto-Karass fight was an epic Fight of the Year contender, let me just say this—on September 10th, both fighters will be coming back in the ring with a vengeance to prove who is the true winner in this rematch,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “Both of these fighters are fierce warriors and the fans can expect to witness what could be the beginning of the next big rivalry in the sport.”

“We’ve very excited to add this highly anticipated rematch between Yoshihiro Kamegai and Jesus Soto-Karass to this outstanding event, “said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. “With their first fight ending in a hotly contested draw and the huge demand from fans and media for a rematch, it’s a perfect fit for this card at the Fabulous Forum, home to decades of memorable battles. As we’ve always tried to do, adding a sensational co-feature to this event provides non-stop action for those in the arena. This will be the fourth consecutive time Roman and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin have fought on the same date televised by HBO and this ‘winning combination’ affirms this as the strongest international boxing day of the year.”

In their first bout which ended in a split decision draw (97-93, Kamegai, 96-94 Soto-Karass and 95-95), Kamegai and Soto-Karass delivered an all-out brawl which had fans packed into the Belasco Theater with a special viewing room opened to accommodate the demand. Given the history of both men, there were high expectations placed on the shoulders of Tokyo’s Kamegai and Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico’s Soto-Karass to put on a fight to remember and while such bouts usually fall short of those expectations, that wasn’t the case in April. Both warriors went head-to-head in ten thrilling rounds that had fans in an uproar. When the fight had ended and the judges’ scores were read, no one complained it was a draw because in a bout like that–no fighter deserved to lose. And despite the heated nature of the battle, both fighters have agreed to do it again, with the fans likely to be the biggest winners on September 10.

Mostly fighting in his native Japan, Kamegai burst on to the boxing scene in the United States with a 2014 “Fight of the Year” candidate against former world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero, an epic 12-round battle that was awarded to the California native. Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Kamegai may have only competed a handful of times in the United States, but with his exciting style and fighting spirit, the 33-year-old has built a sizable fan base, one that is expected to grow for his rematch with Soto-Karass. The former OPBF welterweight champion, Kamegai has been to battle with the likes of Johan Perez and Alfonso Gomez, and if he can defeat Soto Karass, it will be the biggest victory of his nearly 11-year career.

Fighting out of Los Angeles, California, Soto-Karass has faced numerous world champions and contenders over his 15-year career including Keith “One Time” Thurman, Andre Berto, Marcos Maidana, Devon “The Great” Alexander, Yuri Foreman, Alfonso Gomez, “King” Gabriel Rosado, Mike Jones Selcuk Aydin and David Estrada. He is a former NABF and WBC Continental Americas champion who has been thrilling boxing fans since his debut in 2001. Owner of wins over Vince Phillips, David Estrada, Selcuk Aydin and Andre Berto, Soto Karass is an aggressive puncher who can handle himself against any fighter willing to step in the ring to face him. A former world title challenger, Soto Karass knows that a win over Kamegai will keep him on the right track to continue fighting for years to come.

Kamegai vs. Soto-Karass II, is a ten round super welterweight clash presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Teiken Promotions, and will serve as the co-main event to the world championship fight between WBC Flyweight World Champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, (45-0-0, 38 KO’s) and undefeated WBC Super Flyweight World Champion Carlos “Principe” Cuadras (35-0-1, 27 KO’s). Both bouts will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

GENNADY “GGG” GOLOVKIN SCORES HIGHEST HBO TV RATING FOR 2016!! “CHOCOLATITO” WORLD TITLE DEFENSE IS HIGHEST CO-FEATURE

Gennady Golovkin
Los Angeles, CA (April 26, 2016) Boxing Superstar and Unified Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin’s, 35-0 (32KO’s), second round destruction of Mandatory Challenger Dominic Wade, 18-1-0 (12KO’s) this past Saturday night was the most watched HBO boxing event in 2016 with 1,325,000 viewers.

“We’re very happy with these ratings for Gennady which have continued to see extraordinary growth since his first fight on HBO in September 2012,” said Tom Loeffler. “As he continues to sell-out arenas in America and garner the top sponsorships in boxing with the JORDAN Brand, Apple, Tecate, Bijan and Samsung, among others, it’s clear that Gennady is one of the most marketable fighters in the world.”

“Selling out arenas in New York City and Los Angeles is very rare for a boxer, but Gennady continues to transcend the sport of boxing as he crosses over to the mainstream.”

Golovkin’s victory over Wade took place in front of a sold-out crowd of 16,353 at the Fabulous Forum, the highest selling boxing event in the storied history of the Fabulous Forum and the highest in California in the last seven years. Along with his previous two fights in Los Angeles, Golovkin has now sold 38,408 tickets in his adopted home of California, by far the most of any other boxer over the same period.

Additionally, Golovkin’s knockout victory of David Lemieux on October 17, 2015 drew a sell-out at Madison Square Garden of 20,548 boxing fans. As at MSG, Golovkin broke the merchandise record for a boxing event at the Fabulous Forum with over $100,000 sold to his adoring fans.

The knockout of Wade was Golovkin’s 16th world title defense and his 22nd straight knockout victory. He retained his WBA/IBF/IBO and WBC “Interim” Middleweight Titles.

In the co-main event on Saturday night, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, 45-0 (38KO’s), defended his WBC Flyweight Championship with a dominant 12-round unanimous decision over world ranked McWilliams Arroyo, 16-3-0 (14KO’s). The victory by the Consensus #1 Pound-for-Pound Fighter drew 1,001,000 viewers, making it the fourth highest rated HBO fight in 2016.

“Roman performed in spectacular fashion and with this rating proved that he is more than capable of headlining his own show,” said Loeffler. “We look forward to working with HBO and Mr. Honda of Teikin Promotions on putting together his next world title defense.”

Golovkin dropped wade with a right to the top of the head.  The knockdown came at the end of the round.  In round two, it was inevitable as Golovkin drilled Wade with a couple of left’s followed by a right and Wade went to the canvas for a 2nd time.  Seconds later Golovkin ended Wade’s night when he landed a big right to the jaw and Wade crumpled to the canvas.  He could not and would not beat referee Jack Reiss’ count at 2:37 of round two.

Golovkin, 159 lbs of Karaganda, KZ made his 17th defense and registered his 22nd straight knockout.  He is now 35-0 with knockouts.  Wade, 159.6 lbs Largo, MD is 18-1.

Roman Gonzalez retained the WBC Flyweight title with a comfortable unanimous decision over McWilliams Arroyo.

Arroyo started off being competitive, but Gonzalez picked up the pace as early as round two and dived up hit shots to the head and body.  Arroyo was game but he was no match for the constant pressure of the undefeated champion.

Gonzalez, 111.4 lbs of Minagua, NIC won by scores of 120-108 and 119-109  and is 45-0.  Arroyo, 111.6 lbs of Fajardo, PR is now 16-3.

MCWILLIAMS ARROYO will be seen SATURDAY, APRIL 23 at 10:00 p.m. ET & 7:00 p.m. PT from The Forum in Inglewood, Cal., exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team will call all the action, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.

HBO2 playdate: April 25 (11:45 p.m.)

The doubleheader will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO and HBO On Demand.

In the main event, Gennady Golovkin (34-0, 31 KOs), originally from Karaganda, Kazakhstan, and now training at Big Bear, Cal., defends his middleweight crown against Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) from Largo, Md., in a scheduled 12-round contest.

Seeking his 16th consecutive successful title defense, the 33-year-old Golovkin is drawing closer to Bernard Hopkins’ record of 20 victorious middleweight title defenses. On a 21-bout knockout streak, Golovkin has compiled an extraordinary knockout-to-win ratio of 91%; no opponent has gone the distance with him since June 2008. Trained by the highly regarded Abel Sanchez, he will be making his tenth appearance on HBO since his auspicious Sept. 2012 debut.

Wade, 25, will draw on his youth and amateur experience, which includes being a four-time Junior Olympic Champion and a participant in the Olympic boxing trials for the 2008 Games. As a pro, he has amassed an impressive perfect record, with a knockout-to-win ratio of 67%, and now hopes to dethrone one of the sport’s most feared champions.

The opening bout features another undefeated fighter, as flyweight champ Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) from Managua, Nicaragua takes on McWilliams Arroyo (16-2, 13 KOs) of Fajardo, Puerto Rico in a scheduled 12-round title fight.

Gonzalez, 28, has brought attention to the flyweight division with his speed and power, boasting a 86% knockout-to-win ratio. Arroyo, 30, with a 78% knockout-to-win ratio, was on a 12-bout win streak entering his previous title bout before suffering a controversial split-decision loss. Now this 2008 Olympian will have the opportunity to spring a massive surprise.

Golovkin and “Chocolatito” are sharing an HBO card for the third time. Both were impressive at the Forum in May 2015 and at New York’s Madison Square Garden the following October.

HBO’s Emmy-Award-winning series “24/7” debuts an all-new edition right after the fights with “24/7 CANELO/KHAN.”

ROMAN GONZALEZ — MCWILLIAMS ARROYO MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL TRANSCRIPT

Roman Gonzalez (640x360)
TOM LOEFFLER: I couldn’t be more excited about kicking off fight week – this fight between Roman and McWilliams is not even a co-feature. It is a co-main event. Roman being the No. 1 pound-for-pound champion in the sport of boxing and arguably McWilliams being one of his toughest fights that’s he’s had. This will be Roman’s 3rd time on HBO since his debut on HBO last year. His awareness internationally and also the respect he has received has skyrocketed with the boxing media and the boxing fans. We are looking to have a sold out Forum and also the biggest capacity they have had for any boxing event since they transformed the historic venue.

ROMAN GONZALEZ: I feel very happy about this fight. He is a great boxer and I believe that I am in great condition.

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: It’s an honor for me to have this opportunity. I have been training very hard. I have to give the champion all of the credit. I have been working very hard and I plan to get that title.

How much longer do you think you can pair Gennady and Roman together?

TOM LOEFFLER: It’s been a fantastic pairing and the fans really respond when they see the No. 1 & No. 2 P4P fighters on the same show. We really worked hard to make it happen this time – this is the third time they have been on the same show together. If everything goes the right way, and I mentioned this is a very difficult fight for him, if everything goes the right way against McWilliams then I think he will have earned the right to be a main event fighter on HBO.

CARLOS BLANDON: My personal opinion is that I am just so happy that Roman is fighting on the undercard of one of the greatest fighters pound-4-pound, GGG. I think it’s a great blessing that HBO puts us on the card with the knockout artist. I do believe that eventually Roman will be the main event and we leave that up to HBO and K2. We know that they do their jobs to the best of their ability with Teiken Promotions and we will be ready for that when it comes. But for now GGG is the main event and we will be taken under consideration.

ROMAN GONZALEZ: I believe that both fighters, Golovkin and myself, are both main events and I hope that after this fight they give me an opportunity to be my own main event.

This is your second shot at a flyweight world title, can you reflect on your first fight in Thailand in 2014? You knocked him down but got the split decision loss

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: I’m a fighter that likes to fight. I know I had good moments in the ring. If we fought in a different territory, I know that it would have been different because he was holding throughout the fight and I couldn’t do a lot of things. But I don’t have any excuses. It is already by me. I am motivated to get a world title because that has always been my dream.

Are you intimidated at all by fighting the man who most regard as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: That motivates me more because I am in boxing to fight the best. It has been my dream since I was a little kid, to fight on HBO and to fight the best in the world. Having thoughts that some think I can’t beat him motivates me even more. At the end of the day the best man will win.

What will a win mean for you?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: It will be excellent. It’s not only fighting the best in the world but to be a champion at the same time as my twin brother will be a dream come true.

How does it feel to be ranked No. 1 but not have the purses there yet? Do you feel that one day you could make over $1M to break the record of Carbajal and Gonzalez? Do you believe the purses are not that big due to the weight class?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: Yes, due to the fact of my weight class, the purses are not as high. I do believe that after this fight, where Arroyo and I will give such a great fight, that soon I will be receiving the purses that I deserve.

Do you feel a special pressure representing Nicaragua?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: No, I feel very happy and very proud of myself that all of the Nicaraguans are so nice to me. It’s a great honor for me to represent Nicaragua.

Arroyo, do you feel a special responsibility to represent Puerto Rico in a certain way?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: Of course it is a great responsibility every time I step up into the ring. I do it to represent my country but I am really relaxed. It is going to be a hard fight. I am really concentrating and I am going to do my best.

What is the Forum capacity and what number are you at right now?

TOM LOEFFLER: We are expecting over 16,000 people at the Forum on Saturday night. There are still some tickets available this week. We are very close. We have over 14,000 tickets sold right now. It is definitely one of the biggest shows in California history. Over 16,000 will be considered a sell-out and as I mentioned it will be the highest attendance figure for any boxing event since the Forum was renovated. They are very happy about Gennady and Roman returning and the LA fans have responded. It’s been almost a year since they fought at the Forum and the fans have responded for these two great match-ups.

The last fighter to take you to a decision was Estrada. Do you believe Arroyo has the same tools to go the distance?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: I believe that every fighter is different. At the same time, the conditioning I had with Juan Francisco Estrada was not the same conditioning as today. The training camps I have had for the last two fights have put me in great condition for the fights. I know that McWilliams will be prepared for the fight and I have also prepared to the best of my ability.

What weight are you right now? This was your second training camp in Costa Rica – how do you feel?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: I am three pounds over the weight right now – 115 lbs. The training camps in Costa Rica have gone really well and have put me in top condition for Saturday night.

Why did you choose Costa Rica? Is it hard to train in Nicaragua?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: There is a lot of media attention in Nicaragua which makes it difficult to concentrate on training. Going to Costa Rica lets me put all my efforts into training for the fight.

Since you have been out of the ring for almost a year, were you hesitant to take the fight against the best fighter in the world?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: I have done it before. It was not my decision to be out of the ring. I had prepared myself for three or four fights during that time and the fights didn’t go through. It wasn’t what I decided but things happen in boxing. But all of the training has been there and it won’t be a factor.

What can you take away from the loss to Estrada to use against Roman?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: I can’t really compare it because it is two different fighters. Estrada was a fighter that holds on too much. He did a lot of grabbing. I know this fight will be much more explosive because Roman is aggressive and I am aggressive.

What are your thoughts on Roman? Is he living up to the hype? What do you think about what he can do in the ring?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: He’s a great fighter and deserves what he has accomplished. I respect that but on the 23rd when I am going up in the ring, I’m not going to have that on my mind. I am going for what I want and that is to win a world title. I know that fans want a great fight and that’s what I plan to give.

Who would you match Roman up with for an HBO main event?

TOM LOEFFLER: It’s hard to speculate with Gennady and Roman on future opponents. If Roman is not successful on Saturday all of the plans go out the window. As with Gennady, there has been a lot of talk with him and Canelo but there is nothing to speculate on. If Roman is not successful against McWilliams or if Gennady is not successful against Wade…This is probably one of Roman’s toughest fights – for McWilliams to go to Thailand to lose a split decision along with his great amateur background makes for a difficult fight. We will see how everything goes on Saturday then sit own with Mr. Honda and Carlos Blandon and see what happens at that point.

What has HBO said about Roman headlining?

TOM LOEFFLER: We’ve been pushing for that and Roman has gotten a great response form the HBO viewers and if he wins on Saturday we will have more discussions.

Do you think Roman can achieve the “Gold Standard” that Carbajal and Gonzalez set some time ago and what are the challenges?

TOM LOEFFLER: If you remember Michael Carbajal and Chiquita Gonzalez both had great stories. Both were built up and to have that fight at the Forum made for an historic event. I think Roman is getting a lot of international media attention and has a lot of momentum behind his career. It depends on having someone at the same level and there are a lot of great fighters in the lower divisions. I think it’s possible and the more exposure the lighter divisions get the easier it will be to make that type of fight possible.

TOM LOEFFLER: Certainly McWilliams brings a lot of support from Puerto Rico and being the flag-bearer for the Olympic team for his country in 2008 and that’s the type of thing you need to make that type of fight – two very marketable fighters.

What was the feeling to carry the Olympic flag?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: It was an honor to me being in front of my whole, not only my boxing team, but all of the other sports. I was very grateful and to also have my brother with me also fighting in the Olympics – it was a great honor.

What do you think about getting this opportunity?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: I am prepared for the fight. I missed out on my first opportunity at a world title but that doesn’t mean I can’t make it now. It is a dream come true to finally fight on HBO. I am ready and on the 23rd, the best man will win. I know it’s going to be a hard fight and the fans are going to be the ones to enjoy it.

Does being No. 1 pound-for-pound affect the way you fight in the ring?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: It is a big blessing. I have trained very hard. I feel like I have trained enough to win. I train for my family and for my country. It is a big motivation to be No. 1 and be able to maintain that.

Do you go into this fight looking for the knockout or just waiting and if it comes it comes?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: I have never said that I am going to knock an opponent out. I am going to give my best and I am going to pay attention to my corner and if the knockout comes, then I welcome it but I am not looking for the knockout.

Why do you think you can win this fight?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: I didn’t just start yesterday. I have been boxing all my life. I am here to fight the best. I have always wanted to fight the best. The training that I have and the experience – I already know that I can give my best. At the end of the day the best man will win. I am very motivated and I am going to the ring for the win.

Do you think Roman may be looking beyond you?

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: I can’t answer that. Only he can tell you that. I don’t think so, but really I don’t know.

Roman, what plans to you have outside of the ring?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: This is, for me, to keep motivating young people and to be able tell people to keep away from any vices if there is any opportunity to do so.

Do you see bigger things in store for you after Saturday night?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: It motivates me because God gives me the will to win on Saturday. I know that after that fight there will be a lot higher purses and bigger fights and that motivates me.

Stylistically, will Arroyo be the most difficult fighter to date?

ROMAN GONZALEZ: I will find that out on Saturday. It could be very hard. It could be very easy. I do not know. I know he is a warrior, but I will find out if it will be the hardest fight on Saturday.

In closing…

PETER RIVERA: We like to show our appreciation for everyone that is on the call. I would also like to thank Tom Loeffler and Carlos and Chocolatito Gonzalez to let us be on this great show. I want to say to the fans this will be a great fight and I hope that on Saturday we will have a new world champion from Puerto Rico and the twin brothers can be world champions at the same time.

McWILLIAMS ARROYO: On the 23rd, watch the fight. I am going for the win. It’s going to be a great, great fight.

ROMAN GONZALEZ: I am very happy and I hope on Saturday we are able to give the best fight possible.

TOM LOEFFLER: I have to thank both teams – Peter Rivera and from PR Best Boxing Promotions and McWilliams Arroyo. When we reached out to Peter there was no hesitation in taking the fight and working together again with Mr. Honda and Teiken Promotions and Carlos from Chocolatito’s side it really came together and that’s how you make the best fights. I think the fans will be in for a great treat Saturday night at the Forum.

Roman Gonzalez (640x360)
Managua, Nicaragua (March 17, 2016) Consensus #1 Pound-for-Pound Fighter and World Boxing Council Flyweight Champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, 44-0 (38KO’s) has moved his training camp from Managua, Nicaragua to Costa Rica this week as he continues preparation for his world title defense against former world title challenger McWilliams Arroyo, 16-2 (14KO’s) at UNDEFEATED on Saturday, April 23 at the Fabulous Forum in Los Angeles, California.

The Gonzalez/Arroyo clash is the co-featured bout to the World Middleweight Championship between Boxing Superstar and Unified Middleweight World Champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin, 34-0 (31KO’s) and mandatory challenger Dominic Wade, 18-0 (12KO’s). Both bouts will be televised Live on HBO World Championship Boxing® beginning at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Gonzalez’s camp includes his longtime trainer Arnulfo Obando, co-trainer Wilmer Hernandez and father Luis Gonzalez.

Roman Gonzalez

“This is a big opportunity for Arroyo. He feels like he should already be champion from his close, split decision loss to Amnat Ruenroeng and I know how strong and well prepared he will be for this fight. This is a big test and very important fight for me.”

“Moving camp to Costa Rica at this time makes sense, the sparring there is better and the location allows me to completely focus on the fight without any distractions.”

“It’s very exciting to return to the Forum and also to fight once again on HBO. I’m honored that my fans from all over can attend or watch my fights, it’s what I’ve always wanted for my career. Also fighting in the same venue where my idol Alexis Arguello was successful means a great deal to me.” Arguello won all four of his fights at the Forum.

GOLOVKIN’S WORLD TITLE DEFENCE AGAINST WADE EXCLUSIVELY LIVE ON BOXNATION

Gennady Golovkin
Boxing superstar Gennady Golovkin returns exclusively live to BoxNation on Saturday 23rd April when he defends his unified world titles against top undefeated contender Dominic Wade at the Fabulous Forum, Los Angeles.

The pound-for-pound great is back on the The Channel of Champions, headlining an awesome April of fistic entertainment that features Golovkin’s big rival Billy Joe Saunders – with both heading towards a seismic collision this year – defending his WBO World Middleweight title against “Mad” Max Burbank on Saturday 30th April, live from the Copper Box Arena, London.

More big live fight action in April sees the thunderous, punching, all-action, British star Liam Williams defending his British and Commonwealth Super-Welterweight titles against Nav Mansouri on Saturday 2nd April from Harrow, England.

Undefeated Golovkin has destroyed 31 out of 34 opponents – an incredible 91% KO ratio – and the fearsome Kazakh puts his WBA Super, Interim WBC and IBF World Middleweight titles on the line for the 16th time – the second highest in the 160lb division’s history – against Wade and will aim to remain on course for a showdown with Saunders this year to unify all four belts.

Wade, from Largo, Maryland, is the mandatory challenger for GGG’s IBF World title and is undefeated in 18 fights with 12 knockouts. In his last fight he defeated from IBF World Champion Sam Soliman and goes into the showdown against Golovkin looking to cause a tremendous upset.

BoxNation viewers have been treated this year to the world’s best fighters all featuring on the channel with Sergey Kovalev, Terrence Crawford, Andre Ward on March 26th against Sulivan Barrera and now Golovkin.

But on the same card as Golovkin, arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world Roman Gonzalez, the WBC World Flyweight Champion, will defend his title against McWilliams Arroyo.

The Nicaraguan hot-shot has an incredible unbeaten record of 44 wins with 38 KO’s and has left a trail of destruction in the last two and half years with ten-fight KO run.

BoxNation’s Managing Director Jim McMunn is thrilled to have the top three pound-for-pound best: Gonzalez, Golovkin and Kovalev plus the 6th and 9th placed Ward and Crawford all on BoxNation in the first four months of this year.

He said, “That will be some feat to have five of the ten best fighters in the world by April all live on BoxNation and really cements our position as THE channel to watch boxing’s biggest names. Having Golovkin on BoxNation is fantastic, but with Gonzalez also on the card, the number one and two on the planet, it is fantastic for our subscribers to get to see these greats in action, live.”

Nicaraguan Cristofer Rosales Rapidly Rising in Light Flyweight Division

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (February 8, 2016) – Nicaraguan light flyweight world title contender Cristofer “El Latigo” (The Whip) Rosales is fighting out from the long shadows cast by his famous cousin, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez, professional boxing’s new pound-for-pound king.

Rosales (17-2, 13 KOs) headlined a show, promoted by promoter Marcelo Sanchez’ Pinolero Boxing, last Saturday night in Managua. He recaptured the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Fedecentro light flyweight title that he held in 2014 but never defended, defeating Ulises Martin (9-2-1) by way of a ninth-round technical; knockout for his seventh consecutive victory.

“This young man just loves to fight and he is a joy to work with,” Pinolero Boxing spokesperson Michael Schmidt commented. “He has been extremely active with 19 fights in less than three years as a professional boxer. With his stablemate, Bryon Rojas, fighting (WBA Super world minimumweight champion) Hekkie Bulder next month (Mar. 19), representing the fourth Pinolero Boxing fighter to challenge for a world title in the past year, it is fair to say that Rosales is highly motivated knowing he has a promoter able to put him in position to challenge for a world title shortly.”

The 21-year-old Rosales, also the reigning Nicaraguan light flyweight champion, is currently world rated at No. 7 by the World Boxing Council (WBC), as well as No. 10 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), and No. 12 by the WBA.

A slick boxer who can also crack, evident by his 13 knockouts in 17 pro victories, Rosales is closing in on his first world title shot against Japanese world champions Yu Kimura (WBC) and Ryoichi Taguchi (WBA), or Filipino Donnie Nietes (WBO).

Golovkin takes out Lemieux in 8

Gennady Golovkin continued to make his case as boxing’s number one fighter and attraction as he scored an 8th round one-sided beatdown of David Lemieux to retain his WBA and WBC Interim and win the IBF Middleweight title at a sold-out Madison Square Garden

Golovkin dominated the action and did as he wanted as he set the tone with a piston like jab in round one.  In round five, he sent Lemiux to the canvas from a short right hand.  Golovkin continues the assault with thunderous punches that started to bloody the face of the Canadian.  Finally in round 8, Golovkin landed a big flurry of punches that forced referee Steve Willis to mercifully stop the bout at 1:32 of round eight.

Said Golovkin, “I feel great, it was a great fight”

“I felt his power, but I was strong tonight
and my punches hurt him.”

“He is a great champion and I’m glad to beat him.”

“I want all the belts, now I have two. The winner of Cotto/Canelo
for sure.”

“I’m not sure who will win that fight, but I want to fight the winner next.”

“I’m staying at 160 until I have all the belts.”

Said Lemieux, “I feel like the referee called the fight too early. I am fine. When he stopped it I wasn’t event on the mat, I can keep going.

“I have a lot of respect for Golovkin as a fighter. We prepared well for this fight but I feel like I waited too long to take some shots tonight and that really hurt me.”

“I want another chance at Golovkin and I will take advantage of it.

said referee Steve Willis, “I had to do something”

“David is very competitive fighter and as long as he was able to throw punches he was going to keep on trying but his chances of winning were decreasing as the fight went on”

“Against a guy(golovkin) like that he was going to get really hurt and I’m here to protect the fighters health and that’s my top priority ”

“I couldn’t let him continue to receive punishment ”

“I gave him every chance I could and i still hesitated too much. It was over.”

Said Lemieux manager Camile Estephan, Camille:
“It was too early to stop the fight. That punch that Golovkin threw didnt even bring David to the mat. David fought valiantly, he showed a lot of heart and skills. But Golovkin’s defense was great, I think that his defense is underestimated.

Said Bernard Hopkins, “Today was a great night of boxing. David did a great job and put on a great performance. But today Golovkin was better and proved that he deserves to be the unified middleweight champion.

Roman Gonzalez remained perfect with a 9th round stoppage to retain the WBC Flyweight title over Brian Viloria.

In round three, Gonzalez sent Viloria to the deck with a perfect counter right.

Gonzalez dominated the fight as Viloria did well to the body bit Gonzalez’s furious punching battered the face of Gonzalez.  In round nine, Gonzalez landed a right to the head that backed Viloria up to the ropes and then landed a hard flurry of punches until the bout was stopped at 2:53 of round nine.

Gonzalez, 111.4 lbs of Managua, NIC is 44-0 with 38 knockouts.  Viloria, 111.4 lbs of Waipahu, Hi is now 36-5.

Said Viloria, “Roman is a tremendous fighter. I have nothing but respect for him. I had prepared for a different Roman and he surprised me with his defense and his speed. I do feel like the fight was stopped prematurely, I feel good and can keep going. If I had an opportunity to take him on again I would. I feel like I learned a lot today and would use that for the next time around.”

Heavyweight Luis Ortiz annihilated Matias Ariel Vidondo in round three of their scheduled 12-round WBA Interim Heavyweight title bout.

Ortiz dropped Vidondo in round two from a left and ended things in round three when he landed a crushing left that made Vidondo land face first at 17 seconds of round three.

Ortiz, 237.8 lbs of Miami, FL is 23-0 with 20 knockouts.  Vidondo, 261 lbs of Rosario, ARG is now 20-2-1.

Said Ortiz, “I deserve this win and deserve to fight the best. Vidondo did hit hard but he wasn’t good enough to face me. Everyone can see that I dominated the fight. I want to fight the best and I want Golden Boy Promotions to keep its promise and get me the best. I am ready for Klitschko, I know he is running from me. I am going to come after him. I am just ready to become the heavyweight champion of the world.

Taureano Johnson won a 12-round unanimous decision over Eamonn O’Kane on a Middleweight elimination bout.

It looked like it was going to be an early night as Johnson dropped O’Kane twice in round one.  First from a double right hook and again from a sweeping right hook.

Johnson was able to grind out the tough rounds in close and win by scores of 119-107, 118-108 and 117-109.

Johnson, 159.4 lbs of Nassau, BAH is 19-1.  O’Kane, 160 lbs og Belfast. IRE is 17-2-1.

Said Johnson, “This is my first time going 12-round and man does it feel good. It was a tough fight, no matter how many times O’kane went down he kept coming at me. I have respect for him as a fighter. Winning this title eliminator really makes everything for me come full circle and legitimizes me as a true threat in the middleweight division. You know this was a great fight that everyone enjoyed a true brawl, very Mexican Style. This is the beginning for me, the sky is the limit.”

Ruslan Madiyev won a 4-round unanimous decision over Sean Gee in a Welterweight bout.

Madiyev scored a knockdown in round two from a right hand.

Madiyev, 139.6 lbs of Karagabda, KAZ won by scores of 40-35 twice and 39-36 and is now 6-1. Gee, 142.6 lbs of Chicago, IL is now 2-3.

Said Madiyev, “I’m very happy with my performance, it was an honor to
fight on such a big card here at Madison Square Garden.”

“He was a little awkward but I was able to figure him and
win the fight.”‘

“Thanks very much to Gennady for having me on his card. I look
forward to fighting again as soon as possible.”

Lamont Roach Jr. won a 6-round unanimous decision over Jose Bustos in a Lightweight bout.

Scores were 59-55 on all cards for Roach, 131.4 lbs of Washington, DC who is now 9-0. Bustos, 130.4 lbs of Ciudad, MX is now 7-6-3.

Said Roach, “Bustos came to fight. He was not backing down throughout the fight but I did not feel threatened by him. I feel like I dominated the fight and was giving him my all. I wanted to end the fight impressively via knock out but he has a strong jaw. This is my last six-rounder and will move up to eight rounds in my next fight, very excited to go there.”

Maurice Hooker won a split decision over Ghislain Maduma in a 10-round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Hooker dropped Maduma in round three with a left hook. Maduma came to back in round six to rock Hooker several times on the ropes before Hooker spit out his mouthpiece.

Hooker, 139.4 lbs of Dallas, TX won by scores of 95-94, 95-93 and Maduma took a card 95-93.

Hooker is now 19-0-2. Maduma, 139.2 lbs of Montreal is 17-2.

Said Hooker, “I think the fight went a good pace and Maduma was a good fighter. He came prepared to fight. I knew I had him from the first round when I hit him with my left. By the fourth round, I grew confident that I was in the lead once I dropped him. But I grew too confident I think and that is when he caught me by surprise in the sixth round. I wasn’t as focused as I should have been so I made sure to listen to my corner and keep him at a distance with my jab for the remaining rounds. I feel that I am ready for a bigger fight and feel confident I can make a statement at 140 pounds. I would love a shot at Broner or any Golden Boy Promotions fighter at 140 pounds, like Antonio Orozco, I can take him.”

Carbajal to Gonzalez: The flyweights continue to evolve

By Norm Frauenheim–
Roman Gonzalez
Roman Gonzalez and Michael Carbajal are separated by twenty years and linked by history.

Saturday that link between two fighters from different generations will come to a rare crossroads, a coincidence, yet still a significant snapshot about where boxing has been and where it’s going.

Gonzalez represents the fulfillment of what Carbajal began. In 1993, Carbajal introduced the possibility that flyweights can be a big part of the business. That’s when the Phoenix Hall of Famer was No. 4 in The Ring’s pound-for-pound ratings, then the highest ever for a fighter in the lightest divisions.

More than two decades later, Gonzalez has a chance to connect the dots — complete what Carbajal started — at New York’s Madison Square Garden against Brian Viloria Saturday on an HBO pay-per-view card (6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET) that includes middleweight Gennady Golovkin-versus David Lemieux.

The 28-year-old Gonzalez, an unbeaten Nicaraguan (43-0, 37 KOs) goes into the compelling bout ranked No. 1 by The Ring and other media, including ESPN.

“He should be No. 1,’’ Carbajal, now 48, said. “He deserves to be there.’’

Ironically, yet somehow appropriately, Carbajal won’t get a chance to see the bout live. He’s busy.

At about the time Gonzalez climbs through the ropes for his bout Saturday night with Viloria (36-4, 22 KOs), Carbajal will be working a corner for Johnny Tijerina in a featherweight debut at Celebrity Theatre near downtown Phoenix on a UniMas-televised card featuring Las Vegas super-bantamweight Jessie Magadaleno (21-0, 15 KOs) against Filipino Vergel Nebran (14-9-1, 9 KOs).

On both sides of the ropes, business just wouldn’t be the same anymore without the little guys.

Carbajal, the current trainer, has a key question about Gonzalez, one shared by many.

“What happens when his chin gets tested by some real power?’’ he asks.

Nobody really knows, simply because Gonzalez has been so dominant. Against Viloria, there’s a pretty good chance at an answer.

Although he’s been erratic throughout his career, Viloria, a Filipino-American from Hawaii, possesses proven power. If optimistic reports from his training camp are accurate, he intends to target that untested chin early and often. That, of course, raises a couple of other questions.
To wit:
· Will Viloria be able to land a big blow against the skilled Nicaraguan?

· In setting up a big punch, there’s a good chance Viloria leaves himself open to Gonzalez’ own brand of lethal power. Can he withstand a big Gonzalez counter?

In Roman Gonzalez, Hall of Fame manager and advisor Rafael Mendoza of Guadalajara sees some of Carbajal and some of Carbajal’s great rival, Humberto “Chiquita” Gonzalez. Carbajal and Chiquita collected purses still unequalled in the flyweight divisions with a memorable trilogy.

“Roman is not as fast as Carbajal, but he has some of that speed and some of the quickness,’’ Mendoza said. “He is not as powerful as Chiquita, but he has some of that power. He’s kind of a mix of both.’’

Perhaps a historical mix, potent enough to make him the pound-for-pound No. 1 and keep him there.
