Newscast: Newt Gingrich new GOP front-runner.(Broadcast transcript)

NBC Nightly News (Transcript) January 26, 2012 BRIAN WILLIAMS, anchor:

In the poll numbers were are debuting tonight, there is a new GOP front-runner in this race, and that’s Newt Gingrich. Now leading Mitt Romney by nine points nationally. Santorum third. Ron Paul with 12 percent, fourth.

TEXT:

NBC News The Wall Street Journal Jan 22-24, 2012 Voters Support Gingrich 37% Romney 28% Santorum 18% Paul 12% WILLIAMS: Seizing the lead, however, as you know, comes with quite a cost to Newt Gingrich. As we’ve seen in this race so far, front-runner status means coming under heavy fire. That’s what happened today. Our poll is also showing evidence this race is hurting the GOP, and we can see more of that tonight at the next debate because, after all, it’s only been three days since the last one. A lot of ground to cover tonight, including those new poll numbers. But first, let’s begin with NBC’s Ron Mott in Jacksonville tonight.

Ron, good evening.

RON MOTT reporting:

Hey, Brian, good evening to you. Long before Republicans officially get the chance to beat President Barack Obama in the fall, Newt Gingrich is saying tonight he’s getting beaten up by Republican–the Republican establishment–excuse me–and does not plan to go down without a fight.

Offscreen Voice: Mr. Speaker, you sounded angry today. here newt gingrich bio

Former Representative NEWT GINGRICH (Republican Presidential Candidate): I am angry. But I think I’m angry–I’m angry and I think every American should be angry.

MOTT: With $14 million of advertising in Florida aimed largely at Newt Gingrich, from Mitt Romney and a super PAC backing him…

(Clip from political advertisement) MOTT: …the former House speaker had a lot to say today as evidence surfaces his forward momentum may be slowing. In the line of fire, the GOP establishment he contends is supporting Romney as much as Romney himself.

Rep. GINGRICH: How can somebody run a campaign this dishonest and think he’s going to have any credibility running for president?

But we’re not going to beat Barack Obama with some guy who has Swiss bank accounts, Cayman Island accounts, owns shares of Goldman Sachs while it forecloses on Florida.

MOTT: Gingrich has said his South Carolina primary win would bring out the forces against him, and one such force, legendary senator and 1996 Republican presidential nominee Bob Dole did just that, writing in an open letter, quote, “Hardly anyone who served with Newt in Congress has endorsed him, and that fact speaks for itself. He was a one-man band who rarely took advice. It was his way or the highway.” Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi raised eyebrows in a TV interview Tuesday.

(Clip from CNN) Representative NANCY PELOSI: He’s not going to be president of the United States. That’s just–that’s not going to happen. site newt gingrich bio

Mr. JOHN KING: Why are you so sure?

Rep. PELOSI: There’s something I know.

(End of clip) MOTT: The intrigue prompted this fiery retort from Gingrich on the “Today” show.

Rep. GINGRICH: I have no idea what’s in Nancy Pelosi’s head. I hope–if she knows something, I have a simple challenge: Spit it out.

MOTT: Today, Pelosi backtracked.

The apparent frustration in the Gingrich camp appears to flow beyond the candidate.

Unidentified Man: So how do you obtain all your information.

MOTT: After a morning speech, Gingrich’s press secretary, reporter in hand, confronted Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz, a Romney supporter, and soon the zingers were flying.

Representative JASON CHAFFETZ: Where does Newt Gingrich live? Where’s his house?

Man: He’s a Virginian.

Rep. CHAFFETZ: So he’s from Virginia.

Man: Now back to–now back to you getting information about…

Rep. CHAFFETZ: Is he on the ballot in Virginia?

MOTT: Only Romney and Ron Paul filed enough signatures to get on Virginia’s ballot, and John McCain’s former campaign senior strategist warns things could get even rougher.

Mr. STEVE SCHMIDT (Former McCain Campaign Senior Strategist): If Newt Gingrich is able to win the Florida primary, you will see a panic and a meltdown of the Republican establishment that is beyond my ability to articulate in the English language.

MOTT: Now tonight, NBC’s Michael Isikoff is reporting that Mitt Romney is amending his financial disclosure forms to include some tax return information that did not initially get put in those financial disclosure forms from overseas investments. Brian:

WILLIAMS: Ron Mott starting us off from Florida tonight. Ron, thanks.

And now we turn to those exclusive new numbers on where this race stands nationally in our NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. For that we turn to our political director Chuck Todd in our DC bureau.

And, Chuck, Gingrich seems to be winning over the public at large in the party right now.

CHUCK TODD reporting:

Well, at least Republicans nationally. We matched him up in a two-way race with Mitt Romney, and his lead actually grows to 52-39. Now let me explain how–why he does it. His advantages are among the core of the Republican Party. Among conservatives that call themselves very conservative, he leads by 39 points. Among those folks who call themselves Southerners, it’s 37. Tea partiers, a 35 point lead. But our poll also shows if Gingrich is the nominee, he’s got a huge hill and perhaps mountain to climb. A matchup against President Obama, Gingrich trails 55-37, that’s an 18-point gap.

TEXT:

NBC News The Wall Street Journal Jan 22-24, 2012 Gingrich Romney Very Conservative 66% 27% Southerners 65% 28% Tea Party Supporters 65% 30% TODD: Even Rick Santorum matches up better to President Obama than Gingrich. Mitt Romney also trails Obama by just 6 points, which, of course, is inside the error rate.

TEXT:

NBC News The Wall Street Journal Jan 22-24, 2012 If Election Held Today?

Obama 55% Gingrich 37% Obama 49% Romney 43% TODD: The big reason for this general election gap, it’s women. Among the general election with Romney, he’s actually pretty competitive. Gingrich actually is at 13 points lower among women than Romney himself.

And then finally, Brian, there’s some suggestions in our poll that this presidential primary campaign is actually hurting the party as a whole. Look at these negative ratings. Romney, Santorum, Gingrich all with a net negative rating. The last three Republican nominees–McCain, Bush and Dole–all who had very tough primary campaigns, actually came out of it with a net positive.

TEXT:

NBC News The Wall Street Journal Jan 22-24, 2012 Romney Gingrich Santorum Positive 31% 26% 26% Negative 36% 48% 27% TODD: The last Democrat to have a net negative was John Kerry, and we know how that turned out.

WILLIAMS: Chuck Todd watching the numbers in our DC bureau tonight. Chuck, thanks.

Q & A with Daniel Geale

This Sunday Daniel “The Real Deal” Geale 23-1(14) will take on Roman Karmazin in an IBF Middleweight title eliminator The Olympic Park Sports Centre, Homebush in New South Wales. It’s been 18 months since Geale 29, fought Anthony Mundine in a fight that showed even in defeat that he deserves to be mention up there with the top 160 pounder’s on the planet.

Since then Geale has won two fights to set up this fight with former Light Middleweight champion Karmazin, with the winner becoming Sebastian Sylvester’s mandatory challenger. He is also currently ranked 11 by the WBO & 6 with the Ring magazine.

Hello Daniel, welcome to 15rounds.com

Hi,

Anson Wainwright – You will be fighting Roman Karmazin in an IBF Middleweight title eliminator. What are your thoughts on that fight? What do you expect Karmazin to bring to the fight?

Daniel Geale – It is going to be a great fight, great for me to step up and mix it with these guys at the top and great for boxing fans to watch. With his style and mine, it is going to be one tought fight. Karmazin has alot of experience with the top guys so he will be trying to capitalize on that.

Anson Wainwright – In his last fight Karmazin drew with Sebastian Sylvester for Sylvester’s IBF Middleweight title. What were your thoughts on that fight?

Daniel Geale – Everyone knows how tough it is to get a decision in Germany against a German, so I say he should have won that fight but I am glad that things have turned out this way because it is a great opportunity for me.

Anson Wainwright – Who is part of Team Geale who is your manager, trainer & promoter? Also what gym do you train at?

Daniel Geale – Team Geale…… I train out of Grange Old School Boxing Gym, my trainer is Graham Shaw, my manager is Bill Treacy and my Promoter is Garrie Francisco, a great team that are working hard to get me to the top.

Anson Wainwright – To date your biggest fight was against Anthony Mundine when you lost a razor thin split decision. Looking back on that fight what are your thoughts on it now?

Daniel Geale – Looking back over the tape, I still believe that I did enough to get the decision against Mundine, it was a great fight and no matter what the outcome, it was a stepping stone for me and I am moving forward to fight the best guys in the world while Mundine is fighting easier fights, not even fighting guys in the top 20! Team Geale are onto bigger fish and he can chase me if he is “MAN” enough.

Anson Wainwright – Can you tell us about your early years growing up in Tasmania, did you have the typical hard upbringing that many boxers have?

Daniel Geale – I grew up in a tough area, I wasnt handed everything on a silver platter, my family worked hard to give me the opportunities I had. I have great parents that have always been supportive of me in all areas of my life. My love for boxing has helped me with self discipline, confidence and I believe, has kept me from making the wrong decisions as an adolescent.

Anson Wainwright – How did you first get into Boxing?

Daniel Geale – My Dad introduced me to boxing at nine years old, I had been involved in martial arts and other sports but from my very first training session I was addicted.

Anson Wainwright – You had a very good amateur career that saw you fight at the 2000 Commonwealth games winning gold and then representing Australia at the 2002 Olympics what can you tell us about that? Can you tell us what else you achieved in your amateur career? Also what was your final record?

Daniel Geale – I had a great Amateur Career……I had around 165 fights for 135 wins, I represented Australia at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and I won a Gold Medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. I won a gold medal at the Acropolis Cup in Greece in 2001 and a bronze in 2003. I was 5 time Australian Champion and 2 time Oceana Champion.

Anson Wainwright – Who was your favourite Boxer growing up?

Daniel Geale – I dont have one in particular as I had so many as a kid. Jeff fenech, Kostya Tszyu, Mike Tyson, Roy Jones Jr, and the list goes on.

Anson Wainwright – Away from Boxing what do you like to do with your time? What are your hobbies & Interests? What other sports do you follow and what teams do you support?

Daniel Geale – At the moment I am learning to play the guitar and enjoy a round of golf in my spare time. I follow AFL, NRL and my teams are Collingwood and Wests Tigers.

Anson Wainwright – The Middleweight division has several top fighters where do you feel you fit into it? What do you think of the current champions WBC Martinez, WBA Sturm, IBF Sylvester & WBO Pirog?

Daniel Geale – At the moment I feel I am as strong and ready for anyone in the world, I am ready for my next step, after Karmazin, I want all of the above mentioned fights.

Anson Wainwright – Do you have a nickname?

Daniel Geale – The Real Deal.

Anson Wainwright – Finally do you have a message for your fans ahead of this fight?

Daniel Geale – Like my promo ad says for this fight….this IS my time and I am going to make the most of it. I am willing to take it to these guys that are the Champions and bring some Titles back to Australia and give boxing fans the fights they deserve to see.
