Tony Bellew has vowed to turn his dreams into reality when he takes on Ilunga Makabu for the vacant WBC World Cruiserweight title at Goodison Park – the home of his beloved Everton FC – on Sunday May 29, live on Sky Sports.

Lifelong Evertonian Bellew ‘boxed’ at the home of his club in the movie Creed where he won the World title in the last scene of the film, and gets the chance to make Hollywood come alive against the dangerous Congolese puncher.

All but one of Makabu’s 19 wins have come inside the distance, but Bellew has vowed to make it third time lucky in World title fights and says he cannot lose with the whole city behind him.

People were pulling out of fights against me and I boxed Mateusz Masternak instead, a fight that I didn’t need to take but wanted to do it to prove I was a legitimate World level Cruiserweight.

The diehard Evertonian has won six on the bounce since stepping up to Cruiserweight, settling the score with bitter Welsh rival Nathan Cleverly in their rematch and landing the European title in his last outing in a gruelling encounter with Mateusz Masternak – and now the 33 year old takes on a formidable foe in Makubu.

All but one of Makubu’s 19 wins have come inside the distance, and the Congolese man ranked number one joined Bernard Hopkins as the only fighters to stop the granite chinned Glen Johnson when he picked up the WBC International strap.

Mateusz Masternak aims to prove he is ready to rule the World by beating Tony Bellew and reclaiming the European Cruiserweight title on Saturday (December 12) at The O2 in London, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

The Polish puncher is currently enjoying a new lease of life since teaming up with renowned German coach Ulli Wegner, as evident from his WBA Intercontinental title winning performance against Carlos Nascimento in September, and now, the 28 year old believes the time is right for him to make his mark at elite-level starting with a statement win against Bellew.

David Price has been forced to withdraw from a scheduled bout at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on June 26 due to an injury sustained in training. The 31 year-old heavyweight suffered a neck muscle injury, which will keep him out of the gym for two weeks and therefore unable to compete. The stacked Matchroom Boxing show featuring Tony Bellew, Callum Smith and Rocky Fielding will continue as planned.

‘’Of course I’m disappointed,’’ said the former British and Commonwealth Champion. ‘’I had been looking forward to returning home at the very top of my game and fighting in front of my home fans once again, but unfortunately that will have to wait. My neck muscle needs resting and that has disrupted my preparations and made it impossible for me to be at full fitness for June 26.’’

Said promoter Kalle Sauerland: ‘’Fortunately the neck injury is nothing too serious but the decision has been made to withdraw David from the June 26 card. David wanted to be at his best for his first fight back in Liverpool for over two years and we would not risk him fighting at anything less than 100%. On October 15, 2011, Tony Bellew got that match he was clamoring for and that was a world title opportunity with then WBO Light Heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly. It was a bout that was in the making for sometime as they were both undefeated & Cleverly had what Bellew wanted. It turned personal and the grudge match saw Cleverly eek out a majority decision on a grueling affair.

This Saturday, both who have both since suffered setbacks, will meet again but this time they will compete as Cruiserweights with much on the line.

“It felt like my world had just ended,” said Bellew. “You’ve been in a hard fight, you’ve taken a lot of punches and thrown a lot of punches. It hits you hard. I thought I had done enough and I knew it was a really close fight. We were all waiting for him to announce it, it seemed to take an age and when the referee announced him as the winner, he went mad, jumping around the ring,”said Bellew.

“I don’t class it as a loss, I really don’t I look at my career and I believe I’ve been beaten by one man and that is Adonis Stevenson. I believe at worst in that fight with Cleverly you can give it a draw. If you are going to score that fight and say who the better boxer of these two is, it’s me. If you’re going to ask who landed the harder shots in the fight, it’s me. OK, you can say he wins rounds on little bit of extra work rate, especially the last two, but a 12 round fight isn’t about the last two rounds. Over the whole 12 rounds I was the better boxer, I won six rounds clearly and you can’t deny me that.” continued Bellew of the first encounter.

Because of the rivalry, it was a natural when both moved to Cruisweweight that hostilities would be renewed.

“I’m not really that bothered to tell the truth,” said Bellew. “It’s great boxing in front of your home fans, it’s a fantastic feeling, a buzz. I’ve had both sides of the spectrum. I’ve had 10,000 against me and 10,000 with me and let me tell you, it’s a lot better when you have them on your side. They can help spur you on through the dark moments, because when a fight gets hard, there is going to be dark moments, when you need to show what you are about and what you have got in the tank, they can drag it out of you.”

On July 12, Both Cleverly and Bellew shared a bill and scored knockout wins to set this rematch. After Bellew’s win, he tried to fire the first verbal and psychological at Cleverly.

“I walked over and I gave him a piece of my mind,” said Bellew. “Does he really believe you were a World champion. I don’t think he does. The eyes don’t lie. I have looked into the eyes of a true World champion in Adonis Stevenson. He looks ruthless, looks deadly and looks vicious. Looking into Stevenson’s eyes and looking into Cleverly’s eyes, there’s only one World champion there, and I am not fighting him tonight.”

“He is mentally weak. Any man that is talking about retirement shouldn’t be fighting any more, simple as that. He’s fragile and he’s hiding a lot from people. I win the fight because I am too strong, too powerful and I am technically better than him in everything he does.”

Although Cleverly one the first bout, he knows that not only does he need a win but knows that it will be a crowd pleasing affair.

“We have history, it’s a grudge match,”said Cleverly. “The first fight was an excellent fight and the reason why this rematch is happening is not only is it a rivalry and we don’t like each other, but the first fight was an excellent battle. I won the fight, got the decision, but it was a close fight, got the decision, but it was a close fight so people want to see it again. I want to fight him again, because I want to silence him once and for all.”

That animosity stems up from before their first battle when at a press conference, Cleverly thought Bellew became disrespectful to the then WBO Light Heavyweight champion.

“We just clash,” said Cleverly. “At the end of the day, I am a winner and in the first press conference I was World champion and he came in with this attitude. I was sat at the table and he kind of looked at me and said something and he got under my skin straight away.

“That fight was set up as a big fight. The press conferences, the clash, the grudge match, it was a ferocious build-up. More importantly though, we both delivered on the night. I delivered a good solid performance and Tony Bellew gave it everything. He threw the kitchen sink at me that night, that was his big chance and it made for an excellent fight.

“I had the phone call saying; ‘Nathan, you’re fighting Tony Bellew on October 15’, and I remember thinking ‘that’s only seven weeks away’. So the build-up wasn’t ideal, I want at least ten weeks for a proper training camp. It is difficult going into a fight knowing that you haven’t had a proper camp but I got on with it, I didn’t make excuses at the time, I just said to myself: ‘I’m World champion, let’s defend my title in his hometown’. That’s what a proper champion does and that is what I did.

Cleverly thought he was through with his Light Heavyweight rival, but when both suffered knockout losses (Cleverly losing his title to Sergey Kovaelv while Bellew was stopped by WBC champion Adonis Stevenson) both decided to move up in weight.

“At the final bell when we embraced he said: ‘Forget doing that again, forget doing that again’. I gave him the hardest fight he’s ever had to go through. It was a tough fight, he was on his last legs – he was spent. He says he had weight issues and he was drained but he gave everything that night, he had nothing else in the tank.”

Cleverly’s personal redemption is that he is looking to get back on top. This time in the Cruiserweight division and a second win over his rival will go a long way into that coming to fruition.

“There’s an incredible amount riding on this fight,” said Cleverly. “It’s personal between us but I know what will happen to the winner. This fight is a gateway to a World title shot and the chance for me to make that two-weight World champion dream a reality. That rarely happens in boxing, only the best fighters achieve it so for me to go on and do it, that’s what dreams are made of.

“I can’t imagine myself losing and it hasn’t crossed my mind because I am so confident of winning. I cannot allow this guy to beat me.

“I wouldn’t say I hate him. He hates me, there’s no doubt about that. He hates me because I’ve beaten him and I’ve been a World champion.”

Because of the first win, Cleverly has the confidence that makes him a favorite to make it two in a row against Bellew.

“I will win this fight because I am all round a better fighter than him. I believe I am a faster puncher than Tony Bellew, I have more energy, more speed and more stamina. Yes, maybe I don’t have the one-punch KO power he carries, but he’s hit me clean with that at Light Heavyweight where he was taking people out, and it didn’t bother me. He may punch harder at Cruiserweight but I’m bigger and stronger. My chin is better, there’s more energy in my legs. Cleverly, of Wales, has a record of 28-1 with 14 knockouts and is the former WBO Light Heavyweight world champion. He also is a former Commonwealth, British and European champion.

Cleverly won the Interim WBO championship with a 12-round unanimous decision over Nadjib Mohammadi. He was elevated to full champion with his 4th round stoppage over Aleksy Kuziemski. He defended that title 4 times which included his hotly contested majority decision over Bellew. He dropped the belt when he was stopped in 4-rounds by Sergey Kovalev.

Cleverly moved to Cruiserweight and is on a two fight winning streak which includes his most recent outing when he stopped Alejandro Valori to capture WBA Intercontinental Cruiserweight title on July 12.

Bellew of Liverpool is 22-2-1 with 14 knockouts and is riding a two fight winning streak. He is a former Commonwealth and British Light Heavyweight champion.

Bellew won his first 16 bouts which put him in position for the first fight with Cleverly. In that bout, it was a close back and forth action with Cleverly pulling out a majority decision. Bellew then went on a 4-0-1 streak with a draw and win over classy contender Isaac Chilemba to set up his 2nd world title opportunity against Adonis Stevenson. According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, WBA Super Bantamweight champion Scott Quigg will defend his title against Hidenori Otake on November 22 in Liverpool, UK as part of the Nathan Cleverly – Tony Bellew rematch card.

“I can’t wait to defend my world title in Liverpool on Nov. 22 on a huge night for British boxing,” Quigg said. “Otake represents the toughest fight of my career and I’m working hard to put in a scintillating performance. He is highly ranked and highly respected with an exciting style. I’m on a big run of KO’s and I don’t intend on stopping.”

According to Dan Rafael of espn.com, top rated Super Middleweight James DeGale will take on Marco Antonio Periban on November 22 in Liverpool, England.

“This is like a second final eliminator as if I don’t beat him, I don’t box for a world title,” DeGale said. “It’s a good test. He took Sakio Bika close and he had J’Leon Love all over the place and should have finished him off. He’s not a typical Mexican. He can box on the back foot and he’s going to come to fight and that will bring out the best in me. I am looking forward to it. It’s on a great show so roll on Nov. 22.”

“I didn’t want an eight-round, keep-busy fight,” DeGale said. “I wanted a name that will impress people when I win in style and it will set up a fight with Carl. It’s not about me fighting Carl, though, it’s about me getting my shot at the world title and making history becoming the first British gold medalist to win a world title.”

WBA Super Bantamweight champion Scott Quigg and IBF Bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell will defend their titles on a big bill on November 22 in Liverpool that will support the rematch between Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew.

“Many people have asked me why I am going back to Liverpool to fight Tony Bellew again, and the answer is simple: I don’t like him,” Cleverly said. “He talks too much, and although I’ve beaten him before in front of his home fans, I am going to KO him this time around. Adonis Stevenson retained the WBC Light Heavyweight title with a sixth round stoppage of mandatory contender Tony Bellew at the Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City, Canada.

In round six, Stevenson dropped Bellew with a perfect left hand. Stevenson then landed two more crunching lefts that snapped the head of Bellew back violently and referee Michael Griffin stopped the bout at 1:50 of round six.

Stevenson, 174 1/2 lbs of Montreal is now 23-1 with 21 knockouts. Bellew, 175 lbs of Liverpool, ENG is now 20-2-1.

Sergey Kovalev retained the WBO Light Heavyweight with a two round destruction of Ismayl Sillakh.

After a good boxing 1st round by both, Kovalev dropped Sillakh just seconds into the second round with a hard right hand. Sillakh was clearly hurt but ate a devastating three punch combination that decked Sillakh on hos side and the fight was stopped at 52 seconds of round two

Kovalev of Fort Lauderdale, FL is now 23-0-1 with 21 knockouts. Sillakh, 174 1/2 lbs of Simi Valley, CA is now 21-2.

The bout this Saturday will see Ion once again in a similar position entering enemy territory. Ion began his career reeling off 26 consecutive victories before traveling to Turkey to take on fellow undefeated top-rated contender and 2004 Turkish Olympian Selcuk Aydin for the vacant WBC Silver welterweight championship. Ion brought the fight to the hard-hitting Aydin and, despite suffering a questionable first-round knockdown, seemingly controlled the rest of the action, only to come up on the wrong end of a highly debatable 12-round split decision.

Ion scored three straight victories to earn himself a rematch against Aydin for the WBC Silver title. Unfortunately for Ion, the bout once again took place in Aydin’s home country of Turkey with the titlist pulling out a narrow decision victory, although this one was more deserved.

Looking to work his way back into title contention, Ion signed with promoter Lou DiBella in late 2012 and put together back-to-back victories to earn him the opportunity on Saturday night.

The Romanian-born Ion has been calling Montreal home ever since he turned pro in 2004 and the bout between the Quebec-native Bizier has been talked about for a while now. Stevenson’s third world championship fight in a five month period, to air in the United States on HBO®, will be in the main event against his mandatory challenger and the WBC’s No. 1 contender, England’s Tony ‘Bomber’ Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KOs), on Saturday, November 30 at Colisee Pepsiin Quebec City, Canada. The event will televised live on HBO Boxing After Dark, beginning at 10:15 p. m. ET/PT.

As a bonus, Quebecers will also have the pleasure of watching a second world light heavyweight title fight in the same ring as undefeated World Boxing Organization (WBO) champion Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KOs), who like Stevenson is one of the most feared hitters in boxing today, defends his crown for the first time against challenger Ismayl “The Black Russian” Sillakh (21-1, 17 KOs) in the co-feature.

The 36-year-old Stevenson, now living in Blainville (Quebec, Canada), won his world heavyweight title by way of a first-round knockout in 76 seconds over “Bad” Chad Dawson who was considered at that time the undisputed King of the Light Heavyweights. In Stevenson’s first defense (September 28), former world champion Tavoris Cloud (24-1, 19 KOs) was supposed to be a major test for the new world champion. It was quite different as the powerful left-hander pressured Cloud from the start, forcing the challenger to retire at the end of the seventh round. Stevenson gave Cloud a boxing lesson, displaying brilliant skills, finesse, speed and defensive power.

The powerful southpaw Stevenson is on a nine-fight win streak, all ending on sensational knockouts, over Cloud (TKO7 ), Dawson (KO1), Darnell Boone (KO6), Don George (TKO12), Noe Gonzalez (TKO2), Jesus Gonzales (KO1), Aaron Pryor, Jr. (TKO9), Shujaa El Amin (TKO1) and Derek Edwards (KO3). In fact, the last Stevenson fight that went the distance dates back to 2007.

The 30-year-old Bellew is a native of Liverpool in the United Kingdom. After a great amateur boxing career, he turned professional in 2007 and later won the Commonwealth (2010-2011) title and he still holds the WBC Silver Belt (2012). He has suffered only one loss to then WBO world champion Nathan Cleverly in 2011. He earned his mandatory challenger position by taking the measure of Isaac Chilemba on points in a WBC title eliminator this last May 25 in the co-feature a Carl Froch vs. Mikkel Kessler headlined card in the UK. Among his notable victories was a ninth-round technical knockout of the usually durable Colombian Edison Miranda (35-7, 30 KOs).

The WBO light heavyweight championship bout between champion Kovalev and challenger Sillakh has also raised a lot of interest around the world. Kovalev once terrorized boxing rings around the world representing the Russian National Team. Now a resident of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, he continues in the same vein as a professional, stopping 20 of his 22 opponents, including his last six in a row. In his WBO world title fight last August in England, he was so strong that he tore the title belt from defending champion Cleverly (26-0, 12 KOs), by way of a fourth-round knockout, putting an end to his nearly three-year reign, including six consecutive world championship fights. Kovalev has fought only 61 rounds during his pro career in 22 fights. Eighteen of his 22 fights have ended three rounds or less.

Sillakh was one of the most decorated amateurs of his time in international boxing. The former World Cup champion as an amateur turned pro in 2008. In 2012, he was ranked the WBC No. 1 contender, before losing for the first and only time to Denis Grachev (11-0-1, 7 KOs) by eighth-round TKO. Sillakh has his last four fights to reappear in the world rankings.
