UFC® TRAVELS BACK TO TAMPA WITH A PIVOTAL WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHT BOUT FEATURING FORMER CHAMPION (#4) JOANNA JEDRZEJCZYK AND (#7) MICHELLE WATERSON

LAS VEGAS – For the first time since 2016, UFC® will return to the AMALIE Arena in Tampa, Fla. with a crucial bout in the women’s strawweight division as former champion and No. 4-ranked contender Joanna Jedrzejczyk looks to earn another shot at her lost crown by stopping the win streak of No. 7-rankedMichelle Waterson. Also on the card, longtime veteran Cub Swanson looks to hand undefeated submission specialist Kron Gracie his first career loss.

UFC FIGHT NIGHT ON ESPN+®: JOANNA vs. WATERSON will stream live from the AMALIE Arena with all fights carried exclusively on ESPN+ in English and Spanish. The main card begins at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 12, with the prelims kicking off at 5 p.m. ET.  Doors open at 4 p.m. ET.

Competing in her adopted home state of Florida for the first time, Jedrzejczyk (15-3, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla. by way of Olsztyn, Poland) returns to strawweight after recently attempting to become just the second woman to hold UFC championships in two divisions. Before moving up, Jedrzejczyk had established herself as the greatest strawweight champion in UFC history with dominant wins over Jessica Andrade, Claudia Gadelha (twice) and Karolina Kowalkiewicz. She now looks to get back to her winning ways and into the title conversation by taking out yet another top contender.

Currently on the longest win streak of her UFC career, Waterson (17-6, fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M.) looks to add a UFC champion to her resume and insert herself into the title picture. A former Invicta FC champion, Waterson has been a contender from the moment she joined the UFC roster in 2015 and has already proven herself against some of the top competitors in the division, such as Paige VanZant, Felice Herrig and Karolina Kowalkiewicz. She now aims to secure the biggest win of her career and earn her first shot at UFC gold.

With seven UFC post-fight bonuses to his name, Swanson (25-11, fighting out of Palm Springs, Calif.)  has established himself as one the most exciting athletes on the roster. During his career he has claimed impressive wins over the likes of Dooho Choi, Artem Lobov and Jeremy Stephens. Competing in his 18th UFC bout, Swanson hopes to prove he can still compete with the best in the world and break back into the rankings with another crowd-pleasing performance.

Looking to remain undefeated, Gracie (5-0, fighting out of Culver City, Calif.) aims to secure the most important victory of his career with another signature submission. The latest member of the legendary Gracie family to join the UFC roster, Kron made his debut in impressive fashion by submitting the experienced Alex Caceres in the first round. Now, he looks to take out his second veteran in a row and announce himself as the next prospect to watch in the featherweight division.

Announced bouts on the card include:

  • In a clash of top ranked flyweights, No. 3-ranked contender Deiveson Figueiredo (16-1, fighting out of Condor Belem, Para, Brazil) takes on former title challenger and No. 6-ranked Tim Elliott (16-8-1, fighting out of Lee’s Summit, Mo.)

EPIC ABU DHABI SHOWDOWN WEEK SCHEDULE TO UNDERLINE UAE CAPITAL’S HEAVYWEIGHT LEISURE AND ENTERTAINMENT DESTINATION STATUS

Abu Dhabi, UAE – Tuesday 6th August, 2019: The hugely-anticipated entertainment schedule for Abu Dhabi Showdown Week has been revealed, with the seven-day series of city-wide events – which take place September 1 – 7 ahead of UFCâ 242: KHABIB VS. POIRIER – shaping up to be the hottest week-long party in the Middle East.

With only a handful of VIP and hotel package tickets left available for UFCâ 242, Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, organised by the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), has upped its own ante with an expansive series of lifestyle, retail and culinary promotions and an eye-catching schedule of parties and after-parties hosted by major international nightlife brands.

Cementing Abu Dhabi’s growing status as an entertainment hotspot, the UAE capital will come alive during Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, with dedicated beach and pool parties by day, and headline concerts and high-energy after-parties by night.

Superstar rock group Red Hot Chili Peppers are already confirmed to make their UAE debut with a spectacular concert on September 4, which will be followed by another world-class concert by a ‘mystery’ act on September 5. While both concerts will take place at The Arena, a new indoor venue being constructed on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island that will also stage UFCâ 242 on September 7, the party vibe extends right across Yas Island and beyond all through the week.

With even more events due to be added in coming weeks, the current line-up of parties and nightlife events includes pool parties at Saadiyat Beach Club on September 2 and 3, a fight night viewing party at the same venue on September 7 and a week-long Abu Dhabi Showdown Week poolside brunch offering at The Edition. Things go up a gear with the official Red Hot Chili Peppers After Party, Bizarre by Mad on September 4, and a second official post-concert After Party, Drais Las Vegas at the same venue following the September 5 concert.

On September 6, Drais Las Vegas will also host a pool party at the Fairmont and in the evening, following the UFCâ 242 weigh-in, domestic and international partygoers can enjoy the after party in The Edition Club, The Annex. Partygoers are also spoiled for choice on September 7, as the inaugural Abu Dhabi Showdown Week gets not one but two options for a fitting finale, with The White Experience and Socialista at Cipriani both set to round off the week with a bang.

“We have assembled some of the world’s biggest leisure and nightlife brands to create Abu Dhabi Showdown Week’s wide-ranging schedule of beach, pool and after parties across a number of Abu Dhabi’s leading hotels, resorts and clubs. This holistic entertainment schedule will ensure that international visitors – and local residents alike – experience a dynamic Abu Dhabi Showdown Week programme that lets all fans experience the emirate’s diverse entertainment and nightlife proposition,” said Ali Hassan Al Shaiba, Acting Executive Director of Tourism and Marketing at DCT Abu Dhabi.

“This diverse bill of concerts, lifestyle and nightlife events will elevate Abu Dhabi’s growing status as an entertainment capital, and significantly strengthen the emirate’s standing as an international, globally renowned leisure hub,” added Al Shaiba.

On the culinary front, residents and international visitors will be kept well-fed throughout Abu Dhabi Showdown Week with 25-plus restaurants, bars and cafes across the UAE capital participating in a city-wide ‘Knockout Burgers’ campaign running from August 25 – September 7.

Elsewhere, hotels and dining destinations on Yas Island and Saadiyat Island will be preparing their own culinary offerings as part of a value-add culinary promotion exclusively for Abu Dhabi Showdown Week.

Shoppers can also weigh-in on Abu Dhabi Showdown Week courtesy of three major promotions in selected malls, including Abu Dhabi Mall, Bawabat Al Sharq Mall, Dalma Mall, Deerfields Mall, Madinat Zayed, Mazyad Mall, WTC Abu Dhabi and Yas Mall, as well as Al Ain Mall, Bawadi Mall and Hili Mall in Al Ain.

Running from August 15 to September 7, ‘Knockout Deals’ will align with the traditional back-to-school period and offer shoppers discounts ranging from 25% upwards on health products, fitness apparel and active wear, while the mega ‘Shop & Win’ promotion will see any shopper spending AED200 or more entered into a unified city-wide raffle for a chance to win a brand-new Mercedes-Benz A Class or C Class.

In addition, a series of in-mall activations running during the seven-day Abu Dhabi Showdown Week period will hand members of the public, money-can’t-buy chances for photo opportunities and meet-and-greets with UFC athletes, and pose for social media-friendly snaps with replica UFC belts.

“With many of Abu Dhabi’s leading malls and retail destinations supporting Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, local and international fans – including more than 4,000 foreign visitors descending on Abu Dhabi for UFCâ 242 – can take advantage of special discounts, promotions and bumper deals at unbeatable prices all across the emirate,” said Al Shaiba.

“These eclectic offerings will accentuate Abu Dhabi’s credentials as a world-class shopping destination and stimulate increased revenue across participating outlets, while our food and beverage partners have united to create a compelling menu of themed promotions that will ensure the spirit of Abu Dhabi Showdown Week extends well beyond its core concert and MMA components to stimulate business for restaurants, cafes and bars.”

With UFCâ 242 serving as the mega Abu Dhabi Showdown Week headliner, fans and the general public will be able to experience the world’s fastest-growing sport franchise in various athlete-led activities across the UAE capital.

Across the week, there will be open workouts, autograph signings and meet-and-greet sessions at various locations. With the UFCâ 242 weigh-in at The Arena on Yas Island taking place on September 6, further information on how to claim a free ticket to the weigh-in will be released in coming weeks.

“The UFCâ 242 weigh-in will give fans the opportunity to see their favourite athletes square off face-to-face during an amazing afternoon of drama,” added Al Shaiba.

Fans descending on Yas Island for the weigh-in can also soak up the activity-packed UFC Fan Experience, which allows fans of UFC to fully immerse themselves in the organisation and its stars.

The Abu Dhabi Sports and Fitness Expo, managed by UAE-based Universal Music Fitness and Fashion (UMFF), will feature leading international exhibitors, competitions, fitness programmes, activations, and international conferences during a three-day run at du Forum on Yas Island from September 5-7. This expo is a premier event in the Middle East Region pertaining to wellness, fitness and healthy life style.

Designed to complement the city-wide Abu Dhabi Showdown Week programme and promote health and fitness, the dedicated industry platform will welcome fitness celebrities such as four times Mr. Olympia Jay Cutler and Mr. Universe, Mike O’Hearn and feature live fitness shows for all ages. Ticket prices range from AED50 for a one-day pass, to AED120 for a three-day pass. A single day VIP pass, which includes exclusive opportunities to get up-close to global fitness celebrities, is priced at AED100.

Jones retains Light Heavyweight title with Split Decision over Santos

Jon Jones retained the UFC Light Heavyweight title with a split-decision over Thiago Santos at The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Santos fought well early as he landed plenty of leg kicks, but in round two, his left knee started to buckle. Jones won the middle rounds, but not by wide margins. Santos was always dangerous in the fight, but seemed tentative in spots. Maybe that was because of an injury to his knee. Santos landed a couple of big shots in the 5th round, but it was not enough as Jones took two cards 48-47 while Santos took a 48-47 tally.

Between all the leg kicks Santos landed and the injury suffered by Santos, both fighters needed help getting back to the locker room.

Jones, 205 lbs of Albuquerque, NM is 25-1-1. Santos, 204.5 lbs of Rio De Janeiro, BRA is 21-7.

Amanda Nunes defended her Bantamweight title in emphatic fashion as she stopped former champion Holly Holm in the 1st round with a perfect kick to the face.

Blachowicz, 205.5 lbs of Warsaw, POl is 24-8. Rockhold, 204.5 lbs of Santa Cruz, CA is 16-5.

In a battle of former Ultimate Fighter winners, Michael Chiesa took a relatively easy unanimous decision over Diego Sanchez in a welterweight bout.

Chiesa spent basically the whole fight on the back of Sanchez. Chiesa mixed up going for chokes and Ground and Pound from letting Sanchez get in any type of offensive rhythm. It was a totally dominant performance from Chiesa. Chiesa landed 125 strikes and had 5 takedowns to Sanchez 42 and one.

Chiesa, 170.5 lbs of Spokane, WA won by scores of 30-26 on all cards and is now 16-4. Sanchez, 169 lbs of Albuquerque, NM is 31-12.

Arnold Allen beat down veteran Gilbert Melendez and took a unanimous decision in a featherweight bout.

Allen landed consistent punches and kicks, and dominated the fight from the beginning.

Allen of England won by scores of 30-27 on all cards, and is now 15-1. Melendez of San Francisco is 22-8.

Marlon Vera submitted Nohelin Hernandez in the 2nd round of their bantamweight fight.

SHANGHAI and LAS VEGAS – UFC®, the world’s premier Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) organization, today announced a series of historic milestones that will continue to drive the company’s ambitious growth plans in China.

A two-time member of the United States Olympic freestyle wrestling team and one of only four fighters to simultaneously hold championships in two UFC divisions, Cormier (22-1 1NC, fighting out of San Jose, Calif.) dethroned Miocic via KO during their initial encounter at UFC 226 last year. Throughout his legendary career, he has netted spectacular victories over Derrick Lewis, Alexander Gustafsson, Dan Henderson and Anthony Johnson (twice). Cormier now aims to secure his second title defense against the division’s most dominant champion.

Holder of the record for most successful consecutive heavyweight title defenses in UFC history at three, former champion Miocic (18-3, fighting out of Independence, Ohio) looks to even the score with Cormier. After capturing the championship in 2016 via first-round KO against Fabricio Werdum, Miocic went on to earn thrilling wins against Francis Ngannou, Junior Dos Santos and Alistair Overeem. With revenge on his mind, Miocic is now gunning to become only the fourth fighter to reclaim the UFC heavyweight championship.

Former UFC lightweight champion Pettis (22-8, fighting out of Milwaukee, Wisc.) made a huge splash at welterweight when he became the first fighter to knock out Stephen Thompson this past March. Known for his flashy striking and slick ground game, he has also finished Charles Oliveira, Gilbert Melendez, Benson Henderson and Donald Cerrone. Pettis now hopes to keep his momentum rolling with another show-stealing performance against one of the most dangerous fighters on the UFC roster.

Winner of The Ultimate Fighter season five, Diaz (20-11, fighting out of Stockton, Calif.) makes his highly anticipated first appearance since his epic double-bill against Conor McGregor. A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt with a relentless striking attack, Diaz has beaten some of the biggest names in the sport. On top of submitting McGregor, he has bested Michael Johnson, Gray Maynard, Jim Miller and Donald Cerrone. Diaz now looks for another big finish and to remind fans why he is one of the most exciting fighters in MMA.

Additional bouts on the card include:

In a highly anticipated middleweight contenders’ bout, No. 2 ranked Yoel Romero (13-3, fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla. by way of Pinar Del Rio, Cuba) battles undefeated No. 8 Paulo Costa (12-0, fighting out of Contagem, Brazil)
No.3 ranked bantamweight contender Raphael Assuncao (27-6, fighting out of Alpharetta, Ga. by way of Recife, Brazil) looks to re-assert himself in the title picture against surging No. 9 Cory Sandhagen (11-1, fighting out of Aurora, Colo.)
No.9 ranked middleweight contender Derek Brunson (19-7, fighting out of Wilmington, N.C.) hopes to build on his momentum against rising No. 11 Ian Heinisch (13-1, fighting out of Englewood, Colo.)
· Streaking featherweights collide when Gabriel Benitez (21-7, fighting out of Tijuana, Mexico) meets Sodiq Yusuff (9-1, fighting out of Bladensburg, Md. by way of Lagos, Nigeria)

Sabina Mazo (6-1, fighting out of Medellín, Colombia) takes on Shana Dobson (3-3, fighting out of Fort Worth, Tex.) in a clash of flyweight prospects

FIGHT BETWEEN DIEGO SANCHEZ AND CLAY GUIDA TO BE INDUCTED INTO UFC® HALL OF FAME

Las Vegas – UFC® today announced that the classic 2009 fight between season one winner of The Ultimate Fighter® Diego Sanchez and former Strikeforce® lightweight champion Clay Guida will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame’s ‘Fight Wing’ as a part of the class of 2019. The 2019 UFC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, presented by Toyo Tires®, will take place on Friday, July 5, at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Tickets can be purchased via Ticketmaster. The event will be streamed live and exclusively on UFC FIGHT PASS® starting at 7 p.m. PT.

“There are certain guys that when you match them up, there’s no doubt in your mind that it’s going to be a good fight, and this was one of those fights,” UFC President Dana White said. “This fight represents everything that fans around the world love about UFC and the sport of mixed martial arts. Diego and Clay are two maniacs and as soon as the fight began, they both came out blasting each other, it was crazy! This was an absolute war and both guys gave everything they had for all three rounds. This fight was so good it was named the 2009 Fight of the Year. It is one of the best displays of heart, endurance and will to win that you will ever see. Congratulations to Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida on a fight that will always be remembered as one of the best ever!”

As the main event of The Ultimate Fighter®: United States vs. United Kingdom Finale, which took place on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, both athletes entered the highly-anticipated matchup on three-fight winning streaks.

Sanchez entered the Octagon® with an impressive 22-2 record that included victories over former WEC® welterweight champions Nick Diaz and Karo Parisyan, former WEC® middleweight champion Joe Riggs and 2007 Strikeforce middleweight grand prix champion Jorge Santiago.

“The fight with Guida was really fun,” said Sanchez. “My mentality was that it was time to get street on this wrestler and that’s exactly what I did!”

Guida arrived at the Palms with a 25-6 record and wins over season five winner of The Ultimate Fighter® and current UFC welterweight Nate Diaz, season six winner of The Ultimate Fighter® Mac Danzig and former Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson.

“When you take a rampaging beast like Diego Sanchez, and a wild Tasmanian devil like me, you get a recipe for Fight of the Year, and that’s what we gave UFC fans that night,” said Guida. “The fans were the true winners and they deserved it more than anyone. Thank you for inducting this prolific battle into the UFC Hall of Fame! On behalf of my team, family, and friends that helped us prepare for that fight, we are truly honored!”

Known for their intense personalities and tenacious fighting styles, both athletes ignited the crowd with their pre-fight antics and met in the center of the Octagon following introductions for an epic staredown that would be an indicator of things to come over the next three rounds.

Sanchez quickly advanced to Guida’s side of the Octagon as the fight began and both athletes stood toe to toe exchanging punches until Diego connected on a right uppercut that almost floored Clay ten seconds into the first round. Sanchez continued his attack with a barrage of flying knees and punches as Guida covered up in an attempt to regain his footing. A third flying knee by Sanchez sent Guida’s mouthpiece out of his mouth and onto the canvas, as he moved to avoid Diego’s punches.

Sanchez continued as the aggressor, bombarding Guida with flying knees, uppercuts and jabs until Clay was able to secure his first takedown, directly into full guard, 69 seconds into the fight. Now with the advantage, Guida began landing a series of elbows while pushing Sanchez into the side of the Octagon as Diego, now bleeding, feverishly scrambled to get up off the canvas. Sanchez was able to shake Guida off as both fighters stood up at the 2:20 mark of the round.

Referee Josh Rosenthal immediately stopped the action to allow Clay to go to his corner and secure his mouthguard before fighting resumed at the center of the Octagon. Both fighters circled the center of the canvas for nine seconds until Sanchez connected on a left head kick that floored Guida, allowing Diego to resume his attack. Sanchez would take Clay down into side control with 37 seconds remaining, maintaining control for the remainder of one of the most explosive rounds in UFC history. At the conclusion of the round, both fighters combined to throw 114 significant strikes and received a standing ovation from the crowd.

The action continued in round two, with Guida taking Sanchez down 30 seconds into the round and controlling the action via ground-and-pound. Known for his jiu-jitsu, Diego attempted various submissions from his back and connected on a series of elbows from guard position. Guida maintained control throughout the round, matching Diego’s opening round success heading into the third.

Having each won one round, both athletes were exhausted entering round three, with Guida starting the action by throwing punches to try and set up a takedown. Both athletes traded punches for the majority of the round, until Guida’s takedown attempt at the 1:50 mark was countered by Sanchez, resulting in Diego taking Clay’s back and trying to submit him via arm triangle. Diego lost his arm triangle bid and Clay ended up on top in full guard with Sanchez maneuvering to attempt a kimura. Guida was able to defend Diego’s submission attempt and the fight ended with a final barrage of punches from both fighters.

Sanchez would win the bout via split decision, earning a title shot against UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn for the lightweight title in the main event of UFC®107: PENN vs. SANCHEZ. He would lose his title bid against Penn but has continued to fight the best athletes in the world inside the Octagon.

During his career, Sanchez has competed in 29 fights inside the Octagon and is one of only two fighters that have competed in UFC’s middleweight, welterweight, lightweight and featherweight divisions, joining Kenny Florian. Diego is currently on a two-fight winning streak and most recently defeated Mickey Gall via TKO at UFC® 235: JONES vs. SMITH, in Las Vegas on Saturday, March 2, 2019.

Guida has also continued to flourish inside the Octagon following this historic fight, winning 10 of his last 18 fights, including three of his last four. Clay recently earned a unanimous decision victory over Penn at UFC® 237: NAMAJUNAS vs. ANDRADE, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday, May 11, 2019.
