Amir Khan, founder of Amir Khan Foundation, is leading a joint operation with his Foundation and humanitarian charity Penny Appeal to provide moral and practical support to those affected by the recent flooding in Cumbria.
The two-time world champion boxer will lead volunteers from both organisations to visit Carlisle and the surrounding area on Saturday 12th December. Amir will put on a different type of gloves to help where he can, following the destruction caused by Storm Desmond. Teams will also visit affected communities to show their support and distribute hot meals to those families devastated by the flooding.
Amir Khan said: “The UK community has been so supportive of me and this is just a small way I can give back. Once the flood water disappears, the hard work really starts, as families, most with children, return to severely damaged homes and destroyed possessions.
“Many are still without electricity and heating – so I’m proud to be going with Penny Appeal and our dedicated volunteers to help in every way that we can. It’s important that we come together, as British people do at times like this, and remind those affected that they’re not alone in dealing with this crisis.”
International humanitarian charity Penny Appeal, through its ‘Love Thy Neighbour’ campaign, has been providing hot meals in the UK to those in need for over a year. Amir Khan has worked with Penny Appeal previously, supplying hot meals to homeless people in Manchester.
